Coaches sent home from schools’ top rowing event
BY DYLAN SMITS
Three high school rowing
coaches were sent home from
the prestigious Maadi Cup after
socialising on the first day of
the regatta.
Shirley Boys High School
has confirmed the trio were
told they could not participate
further at the competition and
to return home because of their
conduct.
The Star has been told female
rowing coaches complained
about the behaviour of the trio
while they were socialising into
the night on the opening day
of competition at Lake Ruataniwha
in Twizel op Monday,
March 23.
The Maadi Cup, secondary
schools national rowing
championships, is one of New
Zealand’s most prestigious
sporting events.
In an emailed statement to
The Star, Shirley Boys' High
headmaster Tim Grocott said
the school’s “head of rowing
spoke with the coaches and
informed them that they would
need to return home and could
have no further part in the
Maadi regatta.”
Grocott said it was clear from
the concerns raised the conduct
of the coaches was not acceptable
and “did not reflect the
values and expectations of the
school.”
The three coaches are contracted
to coach rowing for the
school, but are not employees,
Grocott said.
"The school is treating this as
a serious matter, and there is
already of review of the season
underway, which will include
following up on this matter,” he
said.
Grocott would not name the
three coaches.
Rowing New Zealand chief
executive Simon Wickham
would not answer questions on
the matter, saying it was up to
the school to comment.
Twizel often hosts major rowing
events which have seen
drunk and disorderly behaviour
in the past. Last year
police were forced to call reinforcements
when wide-scale
disorder broke out on the small
town’s streets following the
New Zealand Rowing Championships.
The 2026 Maadi Cup
ran from Monday to Saturday
last week with 2280 athletes
from 127 schools participating.
Shirley Boys High crews won
a silver medal in the under 17
double sculls and the bronze in
the under 17 quad sculls.
Never
too old
to take
the plunge
June Lee has had a life-long love of the sky
and aerial adventures. So what better way to
celebrate her 90th birthday than leap 12,000ft
on a tandem parachute jump, 72 years after
becoming one of the first women to join the
Christchurch Parachuting Club
Call to dob in ‘mysterious’ tree cutter
BY KEES CHALMERS
Trees are being cut down in
McCormacks Bay Reserve near
Redcliffs.
But it is not being done by the
city council to tidy the area up.
Nearby residents are now on the
hunt to out the culprit who they
think they know the identity of.
Mt Pleasant resident Joshua
Ryan posted images of a chopped
down tree to a community
Facebook group and asked if
anyone knew anything more
about it.
Beth Jolly reposted Ryan’s
photos and told people to stay
vigilant and report the “nutter”
vandalising the community to
the city council.
An anonymous commenter
said the individual is out at all
hours of the night cutting trees
and is aggressive and erratic.
Ryan was taking his brussels
griffin, Awhi, for her weekly
walk through the reserve when
he first spotted a tree that had
been cut down.
He is a tree lover and was
shocked to see one of his
favourite ngaio’s branches
dumped in a nearby bush.
“I thought ‘what are they
cutting that one down for?’”
He was trekking through the
reserve with Awhi again last
week and found a pohutukawa
had suffered a similar fate.
It had been hacked halfway
through the trunk before being
pushed over.
"I just got a bit p****d off to
be fair, and what else do you do
when you’re p****d off? Put an
angry post up on Facebook.
“Trees are pretty helpless,they
can’t really stop these sort of
things from happening to them,
it’s pretty cowardly to be honest.”
City council head of parks
Pooches make a
splash at pool party
The Waltham Summer Pool
was transformed into a doggy
playground on Sunday.
As the pool prepared to close
for winter, it was paw-ty time
for the canine community at the
annual Pooch Pool Party.
Organised by the city
council and supported by Pet
Central, the pool was dedicated
exclusively to dogs, with their
human owners strictly banned
from entering the water.
Small breeds got the
first opportunity to have a
dip in the morning session,
followed by medium-sized dogs
at 11am then larger breeds
from 1-2.30pm. Dogs of all
shapes and sizes then jumped
in at 3pm.
City council head of
recreation, sports and events,
Nigel Cox, said the pool party
was a hit and continues to grow
in popularity.
“These events are a great way
to mark the end of summer, and
we know it’s a much-loved day
out for the whole family.”
Mad Butcher store closes
The Mad Butcher on Ferry Rd has
closed amid a dispute between
its owners and franchiser, with
legal action pending. Owners
Shane and Nicole Vickery say
they were forced to shut after
their franchise was not renewed,
while franchiser Michael Morton
alleges serious breaches of the
agreement. The owners dispute
this and had sought an injunction
to stay open. Morton said he
looked forward to his day in
court.
Major Lyttelton
development
Plans for apartments and shops
on a long-vacant Lyttelton corner
site have been approved, though
rising costs could still threaten
the project. Developer 2W Ltd has
consent to build 13 homes and
eight commercial units on the
former Collett’s Corner site off
Oxford St. Director Richard Wilkie
said the 12-month, $95,000 consent
process required multiple
design changes. He hopes to
start construction this year.
Club wins
national award
Richmond Club has won a top
hospitality title at the inaugural
out the excellence in food and
beverage award. The judges
recognised the club’s high-volume
kitchen, which serves up to 4000
meals a week, its extensive beer
offerings and seasonal, locallysourced
menu. About 300 clubs
entered the nationwide awards.
Sky’s the limit for June, ‘probably
BY DYLAN SMITS
How do you celebrate your
90th birthday? By becoming
the “coolest great-grandma
around”.
June Lee did a tandem parachute
jump from 12,000 ft near
Wānaka, crossing it off her
bucket list.
When she attended the jump
safety briefing, June said a family
asked if she was “just there
to learn”.
"The look on their faces when
I said ‘no, no I'm here to jump
too.’ They were shocked,” she
told The Star.
A resident at Ngaio Marsh
Retirement Village in Papanui,
June has always loved the sky
and aerial adventures.
She had been reminiscing
about her brief interest in skydiving
many years ago ahead
of her milestone birthday when
she decided to give it another
go.
At 18, June was one of the first
women to join the Christchurch
Parachuting Club in 1954 and
did two jumps.
This time around, June hoped
to tandem with a “good-looking
man” and was in luck to have
instructor Niels Bloemendal
guiding her through the jump.
“I was absolutely elated. It
was very exciting, the whole
thing,” she said.
June said the jump went very
smoothly and the weather was
perfect.
“There was just beautiful
An 18-year-old June Lee during her days
in the Christchurch Parachuting Club in
1954.
scenery and I felt fantastic. The
landing was quite gentle as
well.”
Although she was not nervous,
June said she felt more
aware of the potential danger
than when she was young.
“Back then it was just an
exciting thing to do. I didn’t
much think about any risks.”
The parachuting club in the
1950s was based out of Harewood
Airport, near June’s
family farm, which is now part
of The Groynes.
The difference in safety
“The next thing I want
to do is a helicopter ride
and that will complete
the list.”
June Lee
standards from 1954 to today
stuck out to June.
“Back then it was in the little
tiger moth (plane) and the pilot
sat in the in the rear cockpit
and I sat on the edge with my
feet out on the wing. I was just
hanging out and holding onto
the struts,” she said.
“I had sort of done my dash
after those two jumps and satisfied
my interest.”
However, trying another skydive
again remained on her
bucket list, so June told her
three sons of the plan.
“When she told us what she
wanted to do for her 90th, we
were a bit taken aback,” said
son Philip Lee.
“But when we understood
the connection to her previous
jumps, we got on board. I
think it’s made her probably the
coolest great-grandma around.
We’re just so proud of her.”
June completed the jump with
Skydive Wānaka on January 31,
but she and her sons kept it a
secret from friends and wider
family until revealing a video at
her birthday party on Sunday.
Lee said everyone at the party
the coolest great-grandma around’
was “very surprised” to see the
footage.
“There were quite a few gasps
of shock when they saw mum
jump out of the plane. It went
over really well and was exactly
what we wanted with surprising
everyone,” Philip said.
About 70 family and friends
attended the celebration.
From her three sons, she has
seven grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
Although Skydive Wānaka
checked she was in good
health, June said they were
very excited by her interest in
parachuting.
“I felt very looked after and
they talked me through it
nicely.”
A teacher during her working
life, June has occasionally
embraced opportunities to try
something daring.
From a ride in a glider to hot
air ballooning, she has long
loved sky-based activities and
has now ticked off most of her
bucket list.
“The next thing I want to do
is a helicopter ride and that will
complete the list,” she said.
June would recommend a
parachute jump to older people
keen to try it.
“You certainly have to be reasonably
fit, but go for it. If you
want to do something, go for it.”
After her 90th birthday parachute jump, June caught up with her tandem instructor Niels Blomendal and her three sons Philip, Christopher, and Robert Lee.
Financial comeback for heritage park
BY KEES CHALMERS
Ferrymead Heritage Park
appears to have turned a corner
after being in financial strife
just six months ago.
Park general manager Ian
France said it had made a
small profit over the summer
months – December, January
and February – purely from
operational income.
“I can’t recall the last time
that actually happened,” he
said.
He could not
reveal the park’s
profit over the
three-month
period due to
commercial
sensitivity.
The park’s
situation is a far
cry from last Ian France
year when its bid
to receive $320,000 from the
city council’s Strengthening
Communities fund was
declined.
This left the park in a
“survive, revive and thrive”
position going forward,
Ferrymead Trust chair Jackie
Sutherland said at the time.
The park was forced to
resort to cost-cutting wherever
it could, which led to two
permanent staff losing their
jobs.
This came off the back
of missing out on between
$700,000 and $1.2 million a year
for the next three years last
June, as part of the city council’s
Annual Plan.
Ferrymead Heritage Park has turned a small operational profit over the summer months.
France attributed the park’s
turnaround to its strong
educational programme and
the success of recent events,
including the Nostalgia Festival
and Southern Spice.
He said the park has submitted
to this year’s Annual Plan
and will be making a presentation
to city councillors on
Tuesday.
It is seeking funding to refurbish
a number of buildings on
site.
While it has not requested a
specific amount from the city
council, France said it would
be much less than in previous
years due to the park’s
improved position.
“It’s a massive turnaround
from August last year and no
funding, to where we’ve got to
now and making an operating
profit,” he said.
France said the improvement
would make the park more
attractive to other potential
funders, with applications set to
begin in the coming months.
A focus of those applications
will be supporting its education
programme and enabling visits
by schools that cannot normally
afford it.
“All of a sudden it’s not about
needing all this money to pay
wages, there’s other opportunities
there because we’ve turned it
around so much,” he said.
Permanent staff numbers
have remained the same since
the initial two cuts, and the
park now has a core group of 12
volunteers with a range of skill
sets assisting its operations.
The park secured its first
corporate sponsorship from
Isaac Construction at the
end of last year, with a plan
that the company will carry
out much-needed repairs to
pavements and roads when
available this year – work the
park has wanted done since the
earthquakes.
“It’s helping us aesthetically,
but it also makes it a better
experience for people coming
in,” France said.
Stormwater
water pipe
being replaced
The stormwater pipe and
outfall structure at Corsair Bay
is being replaced because the
existing pipe has reached the
end of its service life.
The work starts on Tuesday
and is expected to take six
months to complete.
The pipe extends from south
of Park Tce, through Corsair
Bay Reserve to the shoreline.
Pedestrian access will be
maintained to and along the
beach while the pipe is being
replaced.
The two parking areas will be
closed until the end of September,
although on-street parking
will be available as usual on
Park Tce.
“We’ve scheduled this work
for the cooler months to minimise
the disruption to beach
users,” said city council head of
three waters Gavin Hutchison.
The work is expected to
have minimal impact on
Park Tce traffic, although a
reduced speed limit and traffic
management – such as stop/go
signs – may be in place at times.
Always read the label and take as directed. If symptoms persist contact your healthcare professional. Koru Nutrition, Christchurch
The ex-farmer who still bikes to the top
The hills were right there. Every
morning, Mike could see them
from his kitchen window, the
communication towers on top, 750
metres up. He’d bought this twentyacre
block specifically so he could
ride up there.
But his knees had other ideas.
Mike had spent eighteen and
a half years farming sheep on a
big farm. Crutching, drenching,
working the races. The last few
years, they’d switched to composite
sheep, crossbreeds that were faster,
more productive, and significantly
more feisty.
“You’re pinning them between
your legs all day,” he says.
“Hundreds of them. And these
composites, they don’t stand still.
They fight you.”
By the time he came off the farm,
his knees had taken the punishment
of nearly two decades of that work.
“My knees, I thought, were just
sort of worn out,” the 58-year-old
says.
Retirement was supposed to be
different. He’d done his time. Now
he had bought a place with hills
out the back door, waiting to be
explored. That was the plan. Get fit,
stay active, run a few animals, and
enjoy what he’d worked for.
Instead, those hills started to feel
less like a promise and more like a
taunt.
The dream of the bike in the hills
was slowly becoming only a dream.
He’d tried ice gel after rides.
Synthetic creams when things flared
up. They helped a bit, but nothing
made a real difference. Some of
them weren’t even recommended
for long-term use.
Then one evening, an ad popped
up. A cream called Koru FX.
Made in New Zealand. Natural
ingredients.
He ordered a bottle, not expecting
much. He’d been disappointed
before.
The next morning, he rubbed
it on and forgot about it. Later,
working the sheep on his block,
he climbed up a wooden fence and
jumped down without thinking. He
remembers grimacing. That impact
on concrete would usually cause no
end of grief.
He frowned as he straightened
up, realising he wasn’t in trouble.
“It wasn’t until later that I realised
I had done something different that
day,” he reflects.
Mike started taking the cream
with him on rides. Small bottle,
tucked under the seat of his
bike. Applied before he set off,
sometimes again when he got back.
It became part of the routine.
And then he started climbing.
The weekly ride is still hard work.
Twenty-two degrees is twentytwo
degrees. But with his knees
supported, Mike’s not just surviving
the climb, he’s mastering it.
“It’s given me more confidence to
do things I want to do,” Mike says.
“That’s everything.”
He’s up there once a week now.
Fifty, sixty times and counting.
Without Koru FX? Mike knows
exactly what that would look like.
Standing in the kitchen, coffee
in hand, staring at hills you can’t
climb. A retirement spent managing
instead of living.
These days, Mike still looks out
that kitchen window every morning.
But now he’s checking the weather,
not wondering what if.
The hills aren’t getting any
smaller. Neither is his list of reasons
to climb them.
Coffee Culture’s
newly refurbished
‘birthplace store’
set to reopen
BY KEES CHALMERS
The final touches are being put
on Coffee Culture Sumner’s
refurbished site ahead of its
reopening later this month, 30
years after it first opened.
The café will reopen on April
15, following a VIP preview of
the newly renovated space on
April 12.
Said Coffee Culture director
and chief operating officer
Sacha Coburn: “We feel
very excited to be back in
the Sumner community,
it’s been hard for us to be
closed the last few years.
“We’ve got some new
features in there, but all
of the things we hope the
Sumner community will
remember.”
The Sumner café – the
first in what is now a national
chain – closed in March 2023
while the adjoining Hollywood
Cinema underwent a major
redevelopment.
The cinema was closed in
October 2022 by its owners,
Sumner locals Hamish and
Karen Doig, who bought it from
long-time owner Lang Masters.
It reopened in June last year
as a branch of luxury cinema
chain Silky Otter.
Coffee Culture now operates
20 stores nationwide – 16 of
them in Christchurch.
The cafe’s renovations on
Marriner St started about five
weeks ago although the design
planning has been
ongoing for the past six
months.
The refurbishment has
been overseen by the
chain’s founder Chris
Houston.
Said Coburn: “It’s
really special to have our
birthplace store back
open.”
An all weather outdoor
area and an expanded seating
area are some of the new
features of the cafe.
Coffee Culture has hired 10
staff for the store, including
new manager Amber Ayrton, a
Sumner local.
Sacha Coburn
NEWS The Star, April 2, 2026 | 9
Coffee Culture Sumner is reopening
later this month, 30 years after it first
opened in 1996.
It will be open from
6.30am-6pm, Monday to Friday
and 7am-6pm on weekends. It
will be open later during the
summer months.
Police staffer
prosecuted for
overtime claims
BY SAM SHERWOOD
A police staff member claimed
nearly $30,000 for overtime
hours they did not work, the
police watchdog has revealed.
The Independent Police
Conduct Authority released a
summary of the investigation
into the staffer on Tuesday.
The IPCA said it oversaw the
police investigation into an
allegation that an authorised
officer had "submitted
timesheets for extra hours
and shifts they had not
worked".
"The sergeant in charge
of checking the timesheets
was unaware the dates had
not been worked, until they
became suspicious of the
volume of overtime claimed.
Police investigated and found
sufficient evidence that the
authorised officer had not
worked the hours claimed in
approximately 40 submitted
timesheets."
The staffer was prosecuted
for obtaining by deception and
is awaiting sentence. The staffer
resigned before police started
an employment process. Police
also investigated the process
for approving timesheets and
identified general process issues
with how timesheets were
reviewed and approved, and
have now made adjustments to
procedures and staffing levels.
A RARE CASE OF
ENDOCARDITIS IN A DOG
I first met Lacey, a 9 year old Staffy late
one Friday afternoon, for a chronic
longstanding history of inappetence,
a shifting leg lameness that was
progressively getting worse, foreleg
swelling and a fever. She was such
a sweet wee thing, who just looked
tired, exhausted and sore. She had
recently been treated at another clinic,
having had dental work performed,
lump removals and radiographs that
demonstrated elbow arthritis. She
had been scripted anti inflammatory
medications for her lameness and
suspected osteoarthritis, but was
clinically deteriorating. Lacey was
normally a fit and active dog with
a voracious appetite, so the owner
couldn’t understand the rapid decline.
When I first met Lacey she was actually
unable to walk or stand up. She would
only eat if food was taken to her, and she
was becoming incontinent, due to her
inability to stand up and toilet herself. It
was all very frightening for both owner
and patient.
On examination Lacey had a fever, high
blood pressure and a very fast heart
rate. She was thin and musculoskeletally
weak. She also weirdly had many
craterous ulcers on her tongue and
gums. Her front legs had pitting
oedema. She had no gastrointestinal
signs, mentation was normal and she
wasn’t neurological.
I immediately pulled bloods from Lacey,
popped her on IV fluids and tried to get
my head around what was going on. Her
blood tests were all over the show, with
many abnormalities, the most significant
being extremely elevated WBCs ( white
blood cells) indicating possible sepsis.
The origin of sepsis unclear. She was
also anemic, had low platelets and an
elevated CRP (marker of inflammation).
Surprisingly her abdominal organs were
pretty normal.
Dr Richard Lucy came in on a Saturday
to perform ultrasonography and echo
cardiology. This was so appreciated as
Lacey was fast deteriorating. Richard
found a very thickened mitral valve
with vegetative lesions throughout. Her
spleen had numerous 2-3cm masses
dotted throughout. A tentative diagnosis
of Bacterial Endocarditis with splenic
bacterial embolism and splenitis was
thought, which fitted with her clinical
picture. An FNA sample of the spleen
was taken for cytology to rule out splenic
lymphoma. The cytology supported
the above diagnosis, which basically
translates to an infection on her heart
valves, a rare disease that in 36 years of
being a veterinarian, Ive only witnessed
once before.
Lacey was immediately started on
high doses of triple antibiotic therapy
(intravenously at first, moving onto
oral medications) anti inflammatory/
pain medications and gut support
supplements. I’m so pleased to add we
are now 8 weeks into treatment and
slowly but surely Lacey is getting back
to her old self. She is walking normally,
attempting to play and resume normal
behaviours, her appetite is back, the
fevers are gone and her abnormal blood
tests are returning to normal reference
ranges. What a relief for us all.
Bacterial Endocarditis is uncommon
but a serious disease, where bacteria
colonise on damaged heart valves
(commonly the mitral or aortic valves).
The likely bacteria involved are
Staplococci, Streptococci or E Coli. Risk
factors can be recent dental procedures,
skin disease, urinary tract infections, IV
catheter placement, immunosuppression
and others. Common clinical signs are
lethargy, fevers, inappetence and weight
loss. You may also see lameness and a
newly diagnosed heart murmur. Blood
cultures diagnose the disease along with
ECHO findings. Because I saw Lacey with
a weekend looming, I elected to start
antibiotics without performing blood
cultures. Lacey is looking at 8-12 weeks
of antibiotic therapy. She has another
ECHO exam in a few weeks to see how
her heart and mitral valves lesions are
doing. So far so good though.
This case wasn’t easy but highlights the
beauty of having a range of diagnostic
tools at your fingertips which can help
yield a diagnosis. It also emphasises solid
team work and collegial support and
despite a weekend approaching, the vets
at MMH were willing to stay late, come
in on weekends, in order to help get a
diagnosis and treatment plan in place for
Lacey.
$329,000 to unsecured
creditors.
The Official Assignee
said the company under
sole shareholder and
director Jesse Dale went
into liquidation from a
failure to account for
taxation.
The building company,
registered in 2009, had
stopped trading before it
went into liquidation.
Knox Builders Ltd owes
just over $500,000 in
mainly unpaid tax bills.
Lawyers Cavell Leitch
was the other unsecured
creditor identified at this
stage, owed just over
$17,000.
The company was
found to have failed to
account for taxation
in a first report by the
Official Assignee after it
was appointed liquidator
by the High Court in
Christchurch last month.
Inland Revenue
made the application
to wind up the house
construction, renovation
and repair business
owned by sole director
and shareholder Jordan
Knox.
The Official Assignee
said the IRD was owed
nearly $485,000 as well as
$1800 in applicant costs,
of the total estimated
shortfall.
‘‘In the meantime,
the liquidator is
conducting searches and
investigations through
various databases and
other avenues to locate
any assets of interest
that are of benefit
for creditors in this
liquidation.’’
An estimate of potential
assets had yet to be
drawn up and returning
funds to creditors was
considered unlikely.
Knox Builders has been
operating since 2021.
The Official Assignee
also found a total
estimated shortfall
of $820,000 in its first
liquidators report
on March 12 for AP
Projects Ltd, a repair and
maintenance business
owned by Petershane
Jeremy Allen.
IRD is owed $404,000
in unsecured claims and
$319,000 as a preferred
creditor.
Another 17 creditors
identified so far include
Toyota Finance New
Zealand owed nearly
$80,000.
Building consultancy
company Three60degrees
has gone into liquidation
owing creditors and staff
$570,000.
Former staff are so far
claiming owed wages and
holiday pay estimated at
$10,000, while unsecured
creditors are understood
to be down $500,000
and secured creditors
$60,000. The company is
owned by JD Stevenson
Investments Ltd and
Joshua Stevenson, named
as the sole director.
Appointed liquidator
Brenton Hunt, from
Insolvency Matters, said
in the first liquidators
report released on March
24 the director had so
far been unable to be
contacted for details
of the insolvency or its
trading history.
Bank accounts were
closed and company
vehicles were believed to
have been sold before the
liquidation began.
Only a modest amount
of office equipment is
understood to have been
owned.

From classroom to canvas and competition green
National champion’s busy life
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Mandy Boyd juggles three vastly
different lives.
On weekends, the 34-yearold
mother of two is a national
champion bowler, with 10 New
Zealand titles to her name,
including her first singles victory
in January.
Off the green, she works as a
pre-school teacher three days a
week and is also a professional
artist – one of New Zealand’s few
live event painters.
Boyd said she paints at any
event but is most often asked to
do weddings.
She captures a moment chosen
by the bride and groom during
the ceremony, while the rest of
the party continues around her.
“I get there two or three hours
early and I start painting the
background, whatever the bride
and groom have chosen,” she
said.
“And then the moment will
happen, that’s often the first kiss
or the walk down the aisle or
something like that, and I take a
photograph.
“Then I move with the wedding,
maybe to the reception, set up
there, bring the photograph up
on my iPad, and paint the bride
and groom into the background
I’ve created earlier. I’m there for
seven or eight hours, usually just
painting the whole time.”
Boyd began live painting
weddings in 2021 after
discovering the concept online.
She felt prepared, having studied
for a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
“I always thought that would be
the most amazing way to make a
career. After seeing those videos,
I saw a bride in Auckland on
a wedding group saying, ‘Does
anyone know of anyone that does
this in New Zealand?’
“I just private messaged
her and I said, ‘Hey, I'm really
As a live event painter, Boyd captures important moments on canvas at weddings and other events while the party circles around her.
interested in doing this, and I’ve
been thinking about doing it, but
I haven’t done it before.
“That was a really amazing
opportunity just to be able to go
and put it all into practice.”
Boyd estimates she has painted
about 40 weddings, as far away
as Auckland and Wānaka, and
has plans to head to Queenstown
soon.
She balances painting
commitments with her day
job at Ravenswood Primary
near Pegasus, where she works
Monday to Wednesday, and with
bowls, playing for Elmwood Park.
“I’ve always been a person who
has got a million things on my
plate at one time, so I'm just used
to it, I think,” she said.
“Nowadays, I just play in events
I really enjoy and want to play in.
I’ve been fortunate enough that
in those events, I’ve happened to
do well this year.”
Boyd won the national pairs
with Kirsten Edwards in January
and followed it with the singles
title – her 10th national title, but
her first singles crown.
“I’ve never classed myself as a
singles player.
"I've always been a
person who's got a
million things on my
plate at one time, so I'm
just used to it, I think. ”
Mandy Boyd
“Because I usually play skip of a
team and I enjoy the team aspect
of things like getting the best out
of your players and all that kind
of stuff.
“I wasn’t even going to enter
the singles, but at the last minute,
I was like, ‘oh, it's in Christchurch,
I should just give it a crack’, so I
was very shocked to have won.”
Her normal style of play
makes competing in the singles
challenging.
“Singles players have to be
quite patient and have some good
self-control, and I can be a little
bit adventurous with my shot
selection.
“That’s why I particularly enjoy
playing with people who know
me well, like Kirsten has a really
amazing understanding of the
way I play and the way my mind
works as well.”
Bowls has taken up less of her
life since her daughters, now nine
and seven, were born.
“I’ve never stopped playing
with the same level of intensity.
In my teens, my mum would
take me down to practise every
day, and I think doing that back
then has laid a really good
foundation.”
“I don’t practice like I should
because I don’t have the time,
but I think the effort and hard
work we put in back then has
locked everything in for me going
forward.”
Boyd sees both bowls and
painting as lifelong pursuits.
“Bowls is one of those sports
that I could play until I’m 90. Who
knows? I haven’t really thought
much about ever stopping. And
I’m pretty sure I’ll keep painting
for a long time, I really enjoy it.”
Boyd is part of the Elmwood
Park team in the New Zealand
interclub playoff in Wellington
from April 9-12, after winning the
Canterbury competition.
Te Kura Tuarua o Horomaka |
Hillmorton High School continues
to grow. Not only in size, but also in
mana, and I am incredibly proud to
write as the sixth Principal leading this
amazing school.
There is much to celebrate. As our roll
increases, so too does the strength
of our identity, connections, and
opportunities for our students. This
growth is visible across our site with
a new Science block well underway.
The steel structure is rising quickly,
signalling exciting progress. When
completed in November, this block
will include four general learning
spaces and eight specialist science
laboratories.
Our students continue to excel
across a wide range of areas. In sport,
Hillmorton teams are competing
at the national level in volleyball,
basketball and futsal; we also recently
competed in our first Maadi Cup
rowing event. Our Polyfest group
continues to grow in both size and
reputation, earning recognition
for the outstanding quality of their
performances.
Academically, our improved results
reflect the hard work of students
and staff. Our Senior Robotics team
has again achieved national success
and will represent New Zealand at
the World Championships in the
United States. This is an amazing
achievement and we wish them well.
These successes reflect who we
are as a collective. Our new logo,
inspired by raranga (weaving),
represents the strong connections
between our students, staff, whānau
and community, strengthening our
shared sense of belonging. Our
We are proud of where we are and
excited about where we are going.
Dramatality, Performing Arts
OPEN DAY 2026
Thursday 14 May, 3:30pm – 5:30pm
Enrolments Now Open
Robotics
The Performing Arts have been in full production mode in
Term One at Hillmorton High School, with their annual
performance event, Dramatality. This is a combination of Drama,
Dance, Music and Hospitality courses combining for two evenings
of performances, while the audience enjoys food prepared by the
hospitality department. Years 9 - 13 Drama and Dance performed
short items as part of their NCEA and course assessments to friends
and whānau. Music was performed by Year 13 Music students, who
performed as the audience arrived.
The event is an
exciting way to start
the year and showcase
the talents of the
students at Hillmorton
High School. We
are extremely proud
of the students’
relentless efforts and
the extraordinary
manner in which they
support each other and
conduct themselves.
Hillmorton’s “Team Bruh” Secures a Spot at World Robotics Championships.
Hillmorton High School’s “Team Bruh” has punched its ticket to the World
Robotics Championships after a stellar performance at the New Zealand
Vex Robotics V5 Nationals last month.
Competing against 76 top-tier teams, members Joshua Bergin, Holly Brown,
Dominic Bunn, Micah Langford, and Zachariah Nicholson earned the
prestigious Amaze Award. This honor recognises the “total package”.
A high-scoring robot defined by robust construction, consistent
programming, and a meticulously documented engineering notebook.
The achievement is a testament to nine months of grueling design and
refinement. While the competition is fierce—with only 800 spots available
for 20,000 teams globally—Team Bruh are seasoned veterans. Four members
are returning to the world stage for the third time, having previously won the
“Create Award” for the Science Division at the 2025 World Championships.
The team now prepares to represent New Zealand in St. Louis, Missouri,
this April.
Polyfest
Hillmorton’s 2026 Polyfest group was the
biggest yet, with 72 students participating
in this amazing two-day event. Our
students spent over 12 hours each week
practising, training and perfecting an
amazing routine put together by our
tutors Lynnette, Corey, Sader and Mia.
They worked incredibly hard and gave
an outstanding performance. Next year is
going to be even bigger and better!
Thank you to our student leaders and the
staff who helped to support and make this
event possible.
Maadi Rowing Regatta
The mist over Lake Ruataniwha is famously cold, but for
Hillmorton High School, the atmosphere over Summer
Tournament week has been nothing short of electric.
While Summer Tournament is a staple of the Term 1
calendar, the 2026 week has officially entered our
school’s history books. For the first time since its
founding, the Hillmorton colors are cutting through
the glacial waters of The Maadi Rowing Regatta.
This is a huge milestone for Hillmorton High School
and a special congratulations to Jaimee Seddon
and Rubybelle Ferguson (pictured) for making the
B Final in a very close U18 Double semi final and
Peter Nieuwenhuijsen, making the A Final in the U16
single after an amazing race where he placed second.
Whatever the result, our community is incredibly proud
of what these students have achieved and we look
forward to returning next year.
Our Principal, Sam Ainsworth will be presenting
at both 3:30pm and 4:30pm. Organised tours
will follow each presentation.
‘Don’t sell
ancient
burial site’
Readers respond to last week’s article
on a potential city council plan to sell red
zone land in McCormacks Bay which has a
Māori burial site on it dating back 600 years
LETTERS The Star, April 2, 2026 | 15
Martin Ward in front of
the Sumner Burial Ground
on McCormacks Bay Rd.
Readers are strongly
opposed to any potential
sale of the site.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
As an ancestor of William McCormack
I fully support the preservation of the
urupā.
I understand William died on his
property when his horse panicked and
bolted. He was thrown against a tree and
suffered a fatal injury, unsure where his
burial site is.
Good work has been done by Martin
Ward.
- John McCormack
We are Redcliffs residents and strongly
oppose the potential sale of the urupā on
red zone land on McCormacks Bay Rd.
We understand this was a Māori burial
ground 600 years ago.
- Jude and John Turner
Taking the opportunity to both thank
and support your stance (Martin Ward)
on stopping the sale of what I now know
to be an urupā.
With Moa Cave so close by it comes as
no surprise. We can and must respect
and conserve the history of this beautiful
area of Christchurch.
- Susan Kovacs
50 years of the best toys
I have just finished reading the article
about the McCormacks Bay urupā which
was first discovered in 1873.
I am totally opposed to this land being
sold by the city council, this is a treasure
that must be preserved. My hapū is Ngāti
Wheke and we were blessed to officially
have the urupā at Purau bay returned to
us.
I do hope that Tūāhuriri Rūnanga will
fight to keep this treasure from being
sold just like we did to keep Purau Bay
urapā
- Riaana Deacon
This is an acknowledged sacred site,
so of course must be respected as such
by our council. Of course it cannot
honourably be sold!
- Annabel Flavell
This land on McCormacks Bay Rd
definitely should be withdrawn from
sale.
It is of significant importance for the
history of our area for both Māori and
Pākehā and should be protected.
SENIORS’ LIVING LIFE
Wills and estate disputes: How proper
advice can prevent costly conflict (part two)
Disputes over wills and estates are
increasingly common. As family
dynamics become more complex,
disagreements about how an estate
should be handled arise more
frequently. Many families are surprised
to learn that, even when a person has
made a will, their estate can still become
tied up in legal claims for months or
even years.
In many cases, these disputes could
have been avoided with clearer
planning and proper legal advice. While
Part One outlined common disputes and
their causes, Part Two focuses on how to
prevent them.
Practical steps to avoid disputes
1. Obtain proper legal advice
Estate planning should go beyond just
drafting a will. A lawyer can advise on
how relationships affect your estate,
potential Family Protection Act claims,
the role of executors, the benefits
of trusts, and how to structure gifts.
Crucially, this advice should be reviewed
regularly as both the law and your
personal circumstances change.
2. Keep your will up to date
Many people leave behind decades-old
wills that no longer reflect their current
wishes. To ensure your intentions are
met, your will should be reviewed
following the entering or exiting of a
relationship, the birth of children or
grandchildren, or significant changes in
your assets and financial circumstances.
3. Be clear and specific
Clear instructions which are well
Protecting you
through all stages
of life
documented about who receives what,
and when that should be made available
to them, can significantly reduce the
ability for another party to make claim
to an asset. While precise documents
are essential, clear communication with
family is equally important. Explaining
what loved ones can realistically expect
helps manage expectations and reduces
misunderstandings.
4. Formally record arrangements
If you have someone in your life
significantly involved with your care, or
with your assets, and you have reached
an agreement with them, it is important
to document this. This could include
where someone is providing you with
care, working in a family business or
residing in a property in which you have
an interest.
5. Understand what you own
If assets are held by trusts or
companies, you should seek legal
advice around these arrangements to
understand how these structures will
interact with your will.
Estate disputes place a significant
emotional and financial burden on
families, in what can already be a
difficult time. They also reduce the value
of the estate through legal costs and
fees. With careful planning and proper
advice, many of these disputes can be
avoided.
will or estate planning, please contact
SENIORS’ LIVING LIFE
Natural support for healthy
joint function
Joint issues will affect most of us at some point.
They can appear in any joint, such as the neck, back,
shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, hips, knees, ankles,
and feet.
Cartilage is the protective surface between moving
bones that allows them to move freely. It is constantly
worn away and needs to be rebuilt. This repair
process slows down for most of us as we age. The
result is that some joints lack sufficient cartilage,
leading to less smooth joint function. This is the most
common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis, leading
to inflammation, pain, stiffness, and reduced joint
mobility. Joint pain can also contribute to falls.
Generally, joints that are most used or under the most
stress show problems first.
Many people seek pain relief from their doctor. The
usual prescription is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
drugs, or NSAIDs, which offer pain relief but do
nothing to stop the progression of arthritis.
According to the British Journal of General Practice,
NSAIDs are not recommended for long-term use and
are responsible for 30% of hospital admissions, mainly
due to internal bleeding, heart attack, stroke and
renal damage. Research shows that all NSAIDs double
the risk of hospitalisation due to heart failure.
Providing the body with the proper supplementary
nutrients can benefit joint health for many people.
A local Christchurch company, Kiwi Natural Health
(KNH), has developed an advanced, high-potency
formula called “Joint Care Plus” to support healthy
joint function.
Inflammation of joints can cause pain and slows the
healing process. Joint Care Plus contains turmeric,
ginger, and black pepper to help reduce inflammation
and pain and enhance digestion, and improve nutrient
absorption. The formula also contains nutrients
that have been researched to support joint health,
including boron, selenium, zinc, manganese, proline
and MSM, and the highly researched glucosamine
sulfate-potassium chloride complex, as well as
chondroitin sulfate.
This comprehensive formula is in an easy-toswallow
capsule. Due to the formula’s nutrient
content, taking 2 or 3 capsules once daily is
recommended to achieve the required amounts of
each nutrient. A loading dose of three capsules twice
daily may be used in severe cases.
KNH Joint Care and further information is
available from the natural health advisers,
naturopaths and medical herbalists at
SPORT
Cashmere’s
golden girl
eyeing spot
at worlds
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Cashmere High’s Eleri Clare
is setting her sights on
representing New Zealand for a
second time.
After a dominant victory in the
single sculls at the Maadi Cup on
Saturday and a history-making
medal in the four, Clare is one of
two Cashmere rowers invited to
trial for the national under 19
team for August’s world championships
in Bulgaria, alongside
Zoe Clarke.
The pair were part of the Cashmere
crew that finished third in
the under 18 girls’ four on Friday
at Lake Ruataniwha – with Cashmere
the first co-ed school since
records began in 2003 to finish
on the podium in that event.
They also won the under 18
quad, while Clare also claimed
the single sculls title, finishing
nine boat lengths and 19 seconds
clear of second place.
Those were Cashmere’s only
two gold medals of the regatta,
while their seven medals overall
set a new school record.
“I’m stoked, it was a really
good race,” Clare said of her single
sculls triumph.
“The support was amazing,
the Cashmere community is just
great and we had all the coaches
on the bank screaming and
shouting for us, it really made it
all so much better.”
She said their bronze in the
under 18 four, racing for the
Dawn Cup, was almost a better
result. While Cashmere has
been strong in sculling events
in recent years, sweep rowing
is traditionally dominated by
single-sex schools.
Cashmere finished third in the Dawn Cup under 18 girls’ four, the first time since
records began that a co-ed school medalled in the event. Rangi Ruru won the race.
Eleri Clare was invited to trial for the New Zealand under 19 team for this year’s junior world championships in Bulgaria in August.
The crew of Clare, Clarke,
coxed by Ivy O’Meagher,
was won by Rangi Ruru.
“We’ve never really had much
success with sweeping,” Clare
said.
“It came down to a pretty tight
race at the end, we really pushed
forwards for that bronze medal.”
Clare is one of eight
Cantabrians in contention to
represent New Zealand at the
junior world championships
later this year, with trials taking
place next weekend.
She also raced in last year’s
“If I do make the under 19
Two-day title for Sydenham
BY SAM COUGHLAN
By the time they walked out
to bowl against St Albans on
Saturday’s final day of the
two-day cricket competition,
Sydenham already knew they
were champions.
They had secured enough batting
bonus points – thanks to
Dylan McArdle’s unbeaten 92 off
62 balls – to build an insurmountable
lead over second-placed
Heathcote. Even if St Albans
had overturned a 162-run deficit
to win, the title was already
Sydenham’s.
They did not – Sydenham
claimed an innings win, bowling
St Albans out for 149 to spark
celebrations.
“We had a bit of fun and were
able to enjoy ourselves,” said captain
Mitch Gardner.
“It was our last week together
as a team as well. We were able to
give a few batters a bowl, and let
everyone chip in.
Sydenham secured the Metro two-day competition with victory over St Albans on
Saturday.
PHOTO: KEVIN CONGDON
“That’s kind-of been the story of
the two-day campaign for us, everyone’s
chipped in with bat or ball
or in the field. It’s been awesome
to have everyone contribute to a
trophy,” Gardner said.
At the other end of the table,
Riccarton survived in the grade
despite finishing last, thanks to
their second-tier championship
side batting all day for a draw
to deny Halswell the points they
needed for promotion.
“They had a game plan, and
myself and the club are really
proud of them for being able to
do it,” said outgoing head coach
Darrin Entwistle.
Southern League leaders
Cashmere Technical and
Ferrymead Bays will square
Last year’s top two, Coastal
Cannon Alpha takes
aim at hybrid ute rivals
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
Chinese brands have surged
ahead of their rivals in the
race to launch plug-in hybrid
utes in New Zealand, with
BYD and GWM (Great Wall
Motors) leading the charge.
Carrying GWM’s hopes is
the Cannon Alpha, a ute that
makes a big statement in
every sense. At 1991mm wide
and weighing in at 2.8 tonnes,
it’s a substantial vehicle,
backed up by a competitive
3500kg braked towing
capacity.
It also brings some clever
features, including a 60/40
split tailgate on the premium
Ultra model for easier deck
access. Not everything is as
tidy, however – the spare
wheel is mounted upright in
the tray, protruding above the
deck due to space taken up by
the battery.
It looks a little unfinished
and could complicate fitting a
tonneau cover or hard lid.
The Cannon is among the
most aggressively priced
PHEV utes in our market
along with the BYD Shark6,
that’s been tearing up the
market with strong sales
since its launch last year.
The pair almost go toe-totoe
on price with the Shark
6 priced at $69,990.The two
model Cannon Alpha range
opens with the $64,990 Lux,
and is rounded out by the
$71,990 Ultra provided for
this road test.
Pricing is aggressive,
putting the Cannon Alpha
alongside the BYD Shark 6,
which has enjoyed strong
sales since its launch.
The two-model range starts
at $64,990 for the Lux and
tops out at $71,990 for the
Ultra tested here, while the
Shark 6 sits at $69,990.
The Alpha offers a useful
all-electric range of up
to 115km and benefits from
GWM’s seven-year unlimited
kilometre warranty,
edging out BYD’s six-year or
160,000km cover.
While the Cannon Alpha
hasn’t yet matched GWM’s
sales expectations, the PHEV
version could provide a
much-needed boost, especially
given the clear demand
in this segment.
Under the bonnet is a
potent PHEV setup producing
300kW and 700Nm from
a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine
paired with a 37kWh battery.
The Shark 6 counters with
321kW and 650Nm from a
1.5-litre turbo hybrid system,
and is quicker to 100km/h by
about a second.
Rating out of 10: Performance
8, Handling and ride comfort 7,
Build Quality 7, Space 7, Value for
money 8, Safety: 2024 five star
ANCAP crash rating
Fuel Economy: On-road test average
consumption 9.8L/100km
Price: $71,990
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
Despite its size and weight,
the Cannon Alpha feels
smooth and eager on the
road, with strong acceleration
– provided the battery is
well charged. Let it run low
and both performance and
fuel efficiency take a hit.
Power is managed by a
nine-speed automatic transmission
shared with other
Cannon Alpha variants.
It generally does the job
well, though occasional mistimed
shifts and awkward
ratio choices take the edge off
refinement.
Some fine-tuning would
improve the driving experience,
particularly in a vehicle
priced above $70,000 where
buyers expect a higher level
of polish.
Inside, the cabin is spacious
and comfortable, with seating
for five and good all-round
visibility.
Controls for key functions
are clearly laid out and
easy to use. A large 14.6-inch
touchscreen anchors the interior,
offering wireless Apple
CarPlay and wired Android
Auto, along with a 12-speaker
Infinity audio system and climate
control.
Safety is also well covered,
with features such as
adaptive cruise control, lane
departure warning and blind
spot monitoring.
The driver assistance
alerts, once intrusive, have
been toned down to chimes –
though they can still become
tiresome and reset each time
the vehicle is restarted.
The Cannon Alpha rides
on a front double wishbone
setup with a multi-link rear,
delivering a soft, composed
ride. The question remains
whether it has the toughness
for demanding, day-to-day
work on rough terrain.
It feels more at home as an
urban or lifestyle ute, with a
plush interior and relatively
modest ground clearance
– 210mm in the Ultra, or
224mm in the entry-level
Lux.
Traditional ute buyers
may find the softer ride less
appealing, but others will
appreciate the planted feel
provided by its weight, along
with accurate, responsive
steering.

THE FAB FOUR
James Hay Theatre | Sunday March 29 @ 7.30pm
A Ticket To Ride...
A packed house at e James Hay
eatre last night stepped into an
audio visual time machine & found
themselves rmly captured in a wave
of brilliantly executed Beatlemania
courtesy of e Fab Four.
Dubbed " e greatest Beatles
show in the world " by the L A
Times, the Fab Four most certainly
lived up to & probably surpassed
that plaudit. Authentic right down to
accents, period specic guitars & costumes,
e Fab Four took us a musical joyride
through the back catalogue of surely one of
the most loved & inuential musical acts of
the modern period.
With images & soundbites from the
1960's playing behind, the hits & memories
from the Beatles musical evolution just kept
coming. "A Hard Day's Night, "She Loves
You", " I Wanna Hold Your Hand ", " Ticket
To Ride", "Twist & Shout", "I saw Her
Standing ere", right through to
"Yesterday" & a glorious "Penny Lane while
resplendent in Sgt. Pepper costumes, 1967
came roaring back to life " With A Little
Help From My Friends". Great sound (no
doubt far superior to what the actual group
had to endure while playing live at the time)
& humorous stage banter kept the audience
involved, dancing, singing & lost in a happy
wave of nostalgia for the entire show.
A moving & powerful "Imagine" & a
"George Harrison" cameo of "Here Comes
e Sun" (wonderfully proceeded by a
snippet of Crowded House) were warmly
received by an audience that simply could
just not get enough.
Amongst the many gems a brilliant
"Revolution" & "Get Back" kept the audience
swaying & it was perhaps tting that the
closing number (with the audience in full
voice) was "Hey Jude". When the band
nally le the stage to rapturous applause a
very satised crowd ltered out of the exits
with the soundtrack to many of their lives
still playing in their heads. For moments
during the show I felt that wonderful
indenable thing that was in the air in the
1960's & very early 1970's. at sense that
all things were possible & that with peace &
love the world could really be a better place.
Last night courtesy of e Fab Four it was.
