Ferrymead Heritage Park
appears to have turned a corner
after being in financial strife just
six months ago.
Park general manager Ian
France said it had made a
small profit over the summer
months – December, January
and February – purely from
operational income.
“I can’t recall the last time that
actually happened,” he said.
He could not reveal the park’s
profit over the three-month
period due to
commercial
sensitivity.
The park’s
situation is a far
cry from last
year when its
bid to receive
$320,000 from
the city council’s
Strengthening
Communities fund
was declined.
Ian France
This left the park in a “survive,
revive and thrive” position going
forward, Ferrymead Trust chair
Jackie Sutherland said at the
time.
The park was forced to resort
to cost-cutting wherever it could,
which led to two permanent
staff losing their jobs.
Call to dob in mystery tree cutter
BY KEES CHALMERS
Trees are being cut down in
McCormacks Bay Reserve near
Redcliffs.
But it is not being done by the
city council to tidy the area up.
Nearby residents are now on the
hunt to out the culprit who they
think they know the identity of.
Mt Pleasant resident Joshua
Ryan posted images of a chopped
down tree to a community
Facebook group and asked if
anyone knew more about it.
Beth Jolly reposted Ryan’s
photos and told people to stay
vigilant and report the “nutter”
vandalising the trees to the city
council.
An anonymous commenter
said the individual is out at all
hours of the night cutting down
trees and is “aggressive and
erratic”.
Ryan was taking his brussels
griffin, Awhi, for her weekly
walk through the reserve when
he first spotted a tree that had
been cut down.
He is a tree lover and was
shocked to see branches from
one of his favourite ngaio’s
dumped in a nearby bush.
“I thought ‘what are they
cutting that one down for?’”
He was trekking through the
reserve with Awhi again last
week and found a pohutukawa
had suffered a similar fate.
It had been hacked halfway
through the trunk before being
pushed over.
"I just got a bit p****d off to
be fair, and what else do you do
when you’re p****d off? Put an
angry post up on Facebook.
“Trees are pretty helpless, they
can’t really stop these sort of
things from happening to them,
it’s pretty cowardly to be honest.”
City council head of parks
Rupert Bool said it had not been
made aware of the damaged
trees.
"We are happy to receive more
information on this and staff will
go to the reserve to investigate
this,” he said.
Tsunami sirens to
be tested for last time
The tsunami sirens will be
tested on Sunday, April 12. Forty
five sirens between Brooklands and
Taylors Mistake will sound for up
to 3min at 11am. It will be the last
time the sirens are tested following
the city council’s decision in June
last year to remove the outdated
and unreliable siren network to
reduce confusion about what to do
in an emergency. The city council
will use emergency mobile alerts
to warn people about potential
tsunamis.
Donations needed to fix
weather-damaged tracks
A fundraising initiative to restore
walking and cycling tracks on
This came off the back of missing out
on between $700,000 and $1.2 million a
year for the next three years last June, as
part of the city council’s Annual Plan.
France attributed the park’s
turnaround to its strong educational
programme and the success of recent
events, including the Nostalgia Festival
and Southern Spice.
He said the park has submitted to this
year’s Annual Plan and will be making a
presentation to city councillors on Tuesday.
It is seeking funding to refurbish a
number of buildings on site.
While it has not requested a specific
amount from the city council, France said
it would be much less than in previous
years due to the park’s improved
position.
“It’s a massive turnaround from August
last year and no funding, to where we’ve
got to now and making an operating
profit,” he said.
France said the improvement would
make the park more attractive to other
potential funders, with applications set to
begin in the coming months.
A focus of those applications will be
supporting its education programme and
enabling visits by schools that cannot
normally afford it.
“All of a sudden it’s not about needing
all this money to pay wages, there’s other
opportunities there because we’ve turned
it around so much,” he said.
Permanent staff numbers have
remained the same since the initial two
cuts, and the park now has a core group
Ferrymead Heritage Park has turned a small operational profit over the summer months.
of 12 volunteers with a range of skill sets
assisting its operations.
The park secured its first corporate
sponsorship from Isaac Construction at
the end of last year, with a plan that the
company will carry out much-needed
repairs to pavements and roads when
available this year – work the park has
wanted done since the earthquakes.
“It’s helping us aesthetically, but it also
makes it a better experience for people
coming in,” France said.
The ex-farmer who still bikes to the top
The hills were right there. Every
morning, Mike could see them
from his kitchen window, the
communication towers on top, 750
metres up. He’d bought this twentyacre
block specifically so he could
ride up there.
But his knees had other ideas.
Mike had spent eighteen and
a half years farming sheep on a
big farm. Crutching, drenching,
working the races. The last few
years, they’d switched to composite
sheep, crossbreeds that were faster,
more productive, and significantly
more feisty.
“You’re pinning them between
your legs all day,” he says.
“Hundreds of them. And these
composites, they don’t stand still.
They fight you.”
By the time he came off the farm,
his knees had taken the punishment
of nearly two decades of that work.
“My knees, I thought, were just
sort of worn out,” the 58-year-old
says.
Retirement was supposed to be
different. He’d done his time. Now
he had bought a place with hills
out the back door, waiting to be
explored. That was the plan. Get fit,
stay active, run a few animals, and
enjoy what he’d worked for.
Instead, those hills started to feel
less like a promise and more like a
taunt.
The dream of the bike in the hills
was slowly becoming only a dream.
He’d tried ice gel after rides.
Synthetic creams when things flared
up. They helped a bit, but nothing
made a real difference. Some of
them weren’t even recommended
for long-term use.
Then one evening, an ad popped
up. A cream called Koru FX.
Made in New Zealand. Natural
ingredients.
He ordered a bottle, not expecting
much. He’d been disappointed
before.
The next morning, he rubbed
it on and forgot about it. Later,
working the sheep on his block,
he climbed up a wooden fence and
jumped down without thinking. He
remembers grimacing. That impact
on concrete would usually cause no
end of grief.
He frowned as he straightened
up, realising he wasn’t in trouble.
“It wasn’t until later that I realised
I had done something different that
day,” he reflects.
Mike started taking the cream
with him on rides. Small bottle,
tucked under the seat of his
bike. Applied before he set off,
sometimes again when he got back.
It became part of the routine.
And then he started climbing.
The weekly ride is still hard work.
Twenty-two degrees is twentytwo
degrees. But with his knees
supported, Mike’s not just surviving
the climb, he’s mastering it.
“It’s given me more confidence to
do things I want to do,” Mike says.
“That’s everything.”
He’s up there once a week now.
Fifty, sixty times and counting.
Without Koru FX? Mike knows
exactly what that would look like.
Standing in the kitchen, coffee
in hand, staring at hills you can’t
climb. A retirement spent managing
instead of living.
These days, Mike still looks out
that kitchen window every morning.
But now he’s checking the weather,
not wondering what if.
The hills aren’t getting any
smaller. Neither is his list of reasons
to climb them.
Uncertain future for red zone native garden
BY KEES CHALMERS
Redcliffs residents have
transformed two barren
red zone properties into a
flourishing native garden.
But the future of the garden is
uncertain, with the city council
listing neighbouring properties
on Balmoral Ln for potential
disposal as part of its Annual
Plan 2026/27.
The planting project at 4 and
6 Balmoral Ln has largely been
led by Ruth Woodley, who hopes
to see the work preserved.
“We really feel
environmentally that it would
be great if this area was left
now that it’s planted,” she said.
The properties sit on a cliff
directly above a contentious
site on McCormacks Bay Rd.
Bay Harbour News reported last
week that it lies on a 600-yearold
urupā, known as the
Sumner Burial Ground.
Residents are opposing its
potential sale, which is also
included on the Annual Plan.
The burial ground was discovered
in 1873 during road
construction, when skeletons
of early Waitaha settlers –
known as the first people of the
South Island – were excavated
by explorer and Canterbury
Museum founder Julius von
Haast.
Woodley said shell middens –
ancient refuse heaps made up
largely of shellfish remains – are
also present at 4 Balmoral Ln.
Heathcote Ward city
councillor Nathaniel Herz
Jardine has asked council staff
Residents Andrew Long, Ruth Woodley and Ian Connor among the native bush they have planted over the past nine years.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
to investigate
whether the
cultural and
historical
significance of the
urupā extends to
the Balmoral Ln
properties.
Council head
of facilities Bruce Nathaniel Herz
Rendall said
Jardine
feedback would
inform decision-making.
“Feedback about the
native planting on 4 and 6
Balmoral Ln, and the concerns
regarding the nearby urupā, is
valuable and will help ensure
decision‐makers have the fullest
possible picture.
“We are looking into all
the matters raised through
submissions, including any
potential connection between
these properties and the site at
156 McCormacks Bay Rd,” he
said.
A decision on the properties
will be made on June 23.
Woodley lives next to 6
Balmoral Ln with her husband,
Ian Connor. She began planting
in 2017 after raising concerns
about the derelict state of the
site with Land Information New
Zealand, which managed it at
the time.
“A lot of weeds, a lot of long
grass and of course they just
seep through,” she said.
After speaking with LINZ, she
was given verbal permission to
plant natives and maintain the
land, which she has done ever
since.
Together with nearby resident
Andrew Long, she has planted
more than 100 trees and shrubs.
The once-bare site is now
covered in native species
including kōuka, ngaio, karo,
pittosporum, kōwhai, karaka,
tōtara, grasses and flax.
There is now sufficient ground
cover to retain moisture,
meaning the plant life is mostly
self-sustaining.
“In a way, we’re all in this
together and even though
it wasn’t my land, it needed
maintaining,” Woodley said.
“It’s been a lot of fun, A lot of
hard work, but also enjoyment.”
Woodley said the garden has
become a source of pride for
that money was used to reduce
How Will I Ever Get Through This?
A practical guide to navigating life’s toughest times
By Lucy Hone
ALL SIGNED COPIES BY
LOCAL SUMNER AUTHOR
DR LUCY HONE
‘Dr Lucy’s unpacking of the grief that comes with living losses was a lightbulb moment for me.’ Ellidy Pullin
‘The best work I know on positive psychology and grief is Lucy Hone’s.’ Martin Seligman
‘Lucy’s insights are practical, wise, and deeply human - they stay with you long after you read them.’ Chelsea Pottenger
From bestselling author and TED speaker Dr Lucy Hone comes a timely and much-needed guide to surviving the
silent epidemic of living loss - the kind that follows divorce, illness, estrangement, redundancy, infertility or any
other life upheaval. Grief is not confined to bereavement.
Yet society rarely recognises these non-death losses, leaving many feeling isolated and unseen. In this deeply
compassionate book, Hone draws on her own experience of multiple losses, decades of resilience research, and
the voices of others navigating profound change, to offer a unique lifeline to readers. Structured around twenty
key questions, How Will I Ever Get Through This? gently assists readers to move from initial overwhelm
(Why do I feel so physically exhausted? Why do I feel so lonely? Who am I now?) to hopeful reengagement
(Who and what is still good in your world? Who and what do you want to live for?). How Will I Ever Get Through
This? will leave readers more resilient, empowered and better equipped to face the future than ever before.
NEWS Bay Harbour News, April 2, 2026 | 7
Strong season for penguins at Pōhatu
The most productive breeding
season since 2022 has given
Canterbury University students
and researchers fresh hope
for kororā (little penguins) at
Pōhatu Flea Bay.
Recent monitoring at the
site has delivered encouraging
results, with the latest breeding
season the most successful
since more intensive tracking
began in 2022.
Researchers recorded high
fledging rates and the highest
number of nests over that
period.
The outcome has made
months of hands-on fieldwork
especially rewarding for UC
students.
Working alongside university
researchers, the Helps
Pōhatu Conservation Trust and
the Pōhatu Penguins ecotourism
operation, students have
contributed directly to conservation
efforts – checking nest
boxes, scanning microchips
and tracking breeding activity
to better understand how the
birds are faring over time.
PhD candidate Lucy Howell
said the experience has been
unforgettable.
“They’re very cute and so that
appeals to a lot of people, but
they are particularly bitey,” she
said.
“I do love them, they have a
lot of character.”
The work is physically
demanding, involving regular
trips to the colony and long
hikes across steep terrain, as
well as careful searches for
nests hidden under rocks, roots
The most recent kororā breeding season was the most successful since intensive monitoring began in 2022.
and burrows.
Some penguins
build nests up to
200m above sea
level, meaning
a long climb for
parents returning
daily to feed
hungry chicks –
and an equally
challenging
journey for
Dr Rachel
Hickcox
fledglings heading to sea for the
first time. Others nest closer to
the shoreline, using any small,
dark space they can find.
For students, visiting the
colony provides valuable field
experience while contributing
to research with direct
conservation impact.
The monitoring builds on
a major 2020–2021 survey of
kororā nests across Banks
Peninsula, published in the New
Zealand Journal of Zoology,
which showed a mixed picture
across the region.
UC researcher Dr Rachel
Hickcox said it makes ongoing
monitoring critical.
“Knowing where the penguins
breed, how many are breeding,
and how this changes over time
is critical to protecting them,”
she said.
“Having the ability to more
frequently monitor the Pōhatu
colony and having a population
of known-age kororā there,
marked with microchips,
allows us to better understand
survival, recruitment, and
foraging behaviour.”
While the overall trend over
the past decade has shown
declining numbers in nests, this
season’s strong result at Flea
Bay is an encouraging sign for
the future.
“Everything that we do is for
a purpose, and that purpose is
always to make sure that their
population stays the same or
increases and thrives,” Hickcox
said.
She said effective dog control
is key to protecting the birds.
“Dogs are actually the
number one predator of little
penguins in New Zealand, and
they kill many, many penguins
every year. So just people
following the rules and keeping
their dogs on leashes is really
helpful.”
Stormwater
water pipe
being replaced
The stormwater pipe and
outfall structure at Corsair Bay
is being replaced because the
existing pipe has reached the
end of its service life.
The work starts on Tuesday
and is expected to take six
months to complete.
The pipe extends from south
of Park Tce, through Corsair
Bay Reserve to the shoreline.
Pedestrian access will be
maintained to and along the
beach while the pipe is being
replaced.
The two parking areas will be
closed until the end of September,
although on-street parking
will be available as usual on
Park Tce.
“We’ve scheduled this work
for the cooler months to minimise
the disruption to beach
users,” said city council head of
three waters Gavin Hutchison.
The work is expected to
have minimal impact on
Park Tce traffic, although a
reduced speed limit and traffic
management – such as stop/go
signs – may be in place at times.
Mantra helps
rescue team
win first title
BY KEES CHALMERS
One thought was repeating in
Jade Couch’s head as she sped
towards the beach finish line in
the open female single rescue
national final – “land on your
feet”.
A mantra has been drilled
into her for the past eight years
at the Sumner Surf Life Saving
Club. And it paid off as she
crossed the line first to win her
team their first national title
at the New Zealand IRB Championships
at Waikanae Beach,
Gisborne, on Sunday.
Couch and her teammates,
Leanni Browne and Matilda
Atkins, were pushing their
inflatable rescue boat to its
limit when she leapt onto the
sand and sprinted to the finish.
The national gold medal had
alluded the team at the championships
from Friday to Sunday.
Couch and Brown also competed
in the team, mass and
assembly rescue events, with
Atkins as their patient. They finished
third overall in the open
female division.
Couch is the driver and
steered the boat towards their
patient. Browne bore the brunt
of the big waves as a crew member
and hauled the patient into
the boat before they headed
back to shore. Sunset Beach
club from Port Waikato and
Kurrawa from the Gold Coast
had their noses in front as they
approached the sand. But they
turned off their engines too
early in a bid to make an easier
transition to the final sprint.
Couch kept hers going for
slightly longer, hoping to use
boat speed to get over the line.
“I knew that I'd be able to finish
quicker if I didn't have to
run as long in the water,” she
said.
"As we were coming in to the
beach, (Browne) was yelling at
me, reminding me it’s going to
be close and that I need to land
on my feet.”
But Couch’s six days a week
intense training regime paid off
as she landed on her feet for the
final dash.
The well-executed transition
gave her a slight advantage and
national gold.
"It’s something me and Leanni
have been working for and it
was pretty surreal. It was kind
of hard to believe,” she said.
Ryan Thom and Nick Hornblow
from Sumner finished
second in the assembly rescue,
third in the mass rescue and
third overall in the open men’s
division.
Sumner finished third overall
on the club leaderboard. It
comes after the club finished
in first at the South Island IRB
Championships two weeks ago
for the first time in 16 years.
Said Couch: “I feel like as a
team we go into these competitions
to race our own races and
the points kind of come second.
"I think seeing those results
and seeing that we are actually
doing really well as a team is
quite cool and going to be a bit
more of a focus in the future,
it’s definitely putting a bit of
fire in the belly for people.
"Top three is still pretty
good, but I definitely think we
wouldn't mind trying to jump a
couple pegs.”
Heathcote finish two-day competition unbeaten
BY KEES CHALMERS
Heathcote’s season may
have ended on Saturday, but
player-coach Tyler Lortan is
already looking forward to the
next campaign.
"My mind doesn't ever stop
with cricket, it’s always going,”
he said.
“I’m already thinking of how
we can improve collectively as
a group, and the individuals.
How can I get the best out of
them during the winter months
so come October we hit the
ground running?”
Heathcote capped off their
season with a three wicket outright
victory over third-placed
Burnside West.
They finished the year with
an unbeaten record in the
Metro premier two-day competition
and claimed second
on table behind title winners
Sydenham.
Burnside West were bowled
out for 161 on the first day
in reply to Heathcote’s 310/7.
Burnside West started the day
on 4/0 after being sent back in
to bat. They were bowled out
for 182. Matthew Hocquard
was the standout with the ball
for Heathcote, taking 4/60 from
his 15 overs. Left arm seamer
Callum Samson took 3/22 and
leg spinner Philippe Boissevain
3/56.
Said Lortan: “We just kept it
really tight with the seamers
when they were on, built lots of
pressure.
"When Philippe and Matt
Hocquard came on it was turning
quite a bit and kept them
under pressure while taking
wickets.”
Heathcote needed just 34
to win the match, which they
chased down, but not without
a scare, losing seven wickets
in the process. Lortan said
the slow outfield and spinning
track made it difficult.
"The boys adopted a mentality
that they’re going to get it
quickly and it played into their
hands a bit,” he said.
"But we limped over the line
and got the win which is the
main thing.
"We’ve got to make small
tweaks and keep improving,
once we do that consistently
around our preparation for a
game, how we go about match
days, we’ll no doubt be in the
winner circles at some point.”
‘Don’t sell
ancient
burial site’
Readers respond to last week’s article
on a potential city council plan to sell red
zone land in McCormacks Bay which has a
Māori burial site on it dating back 600 years
LETTERS Bay Harbour News, April 2, 2026 | 13
Martin Ward in front of
the Sumner Burial Ground
on McCormacks Bay Rd.
Readers are strongly
opposed to any potential
sale of the site.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
As an ancestor of William McCormack I
fully support the preservation of the urupā.
I understand William died on his
property when his horse panicked and
bolted. He was thrown against a tree and
suffered a fatal injury, unsure where his
burial site is.
Good work has been done by Martin
Ward.
- John McCormack
We are Redcliffs residents and strongly
oppose the potential sale of the urupā on
red zone land on McCormacks Bay Rd.
We understand this was a Māori burial
ground 600 years ago.
- Jude and John Turner
Taking the opportunity to both thank
and support your stance (Martin Ward) on
stopping the sale of what I now know to be
an urupā.
With Moa Cave so close by it comes as
no surprise. We can and must respect and
conserve the history of this beautiful area
of Christchurch.
- Susan Kovacs
50 years of the best toys
I have just finished reading the article
about the McCormacks Bay urupā which
was first discovered in 1873.
I am totally opposed to this land being
sold by the city council, this is a treasure
that must be preserved. My hapū is Ngāti
Wheke and we were blessed to officially
have the urupā at Purau bay returned to
us.
I do hope that Tūāhuriri Rūnanga will
fight to keep this treasure from being sold
just like we did to keep Purau Bay urapā
- Riaana Deacon
This is an acknowledged sacred site, so
of course must be respected as such by our
council. Of course it cannot honourably be
sold!
- Annabel Flavell
This land on McCormacks Bay Rd
definitely should be withdrawn from sale.
It is of significant importance for the
history of our area for both Māori and
Pākehā and should be protected.
- Jan Simpson
I am expressing my concern about the
McCormacks Bay Rd site. This property/
sacred place should be preserved by all
means, and closed off to the public.
- Jenny Wilson
MOTORING
Diesel-powered
Tank 300 gets
the job done
If you’re after a capable midsized
SUV – and who isn’t – with
strong on- and off-road ability,
good equipment levels and solid
value for money, the Tank 300
turbo diesel convincingly ticks
those boxes.
This relative newcomer to our
crowded SUV market arrived
about 15 months ago and, in that
time, has comfortably outsold its
larger sibling, the 500.
Tank is a sub-brand of GWM
(Great Wall Motors), part of SAIC
(Shanghai Automotive Industry
Corporation), one of the four
largest state-owned automotive
manufacturers in China.
While new to our shores, the
300 has been sold in South East
Asia, including China, for more
than five years. GWM wisely
delayed its local launch until the
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
updated version was ready.
It arrived well-equipped and
with solid safety credentials.
Initially offered with a 2.0-litre
turbo petrol engine and higherspec
hybrid variants, the line-up
has since evolved.
The underwhelming turbo
petrol has been dropped,
leaving hybrid and turbo diesel
options – with the latter likely
to be the engine of choice for
buyers seeking a proper off-road
SUV.
With its distinctive, rugged,
retro boxy styling, the Tank 300
has clearly struck a chord with
local buyers.
Many will be drawn in by
the $54,990 starting price for
the Lux. The more upmarket
Ultra we tested carries a $5,000
premium, but justifies it with
Rating out of 10: Performance 6, Handling and ride comfort 6, Build Quality 7, Space 7, Styling 7, Fuel
Economy On-road test average consumption 8.5L/100km, Value for money 8
Safety: Five star 2022 ANCAP crash rating
Price: $59,990
Overall points out of 10: 7
additional standard equipment.
The Lux hybrid, at $58,990,
looks less compelling, making
the $3000 step up to the Ultra an
easy call. Adding to the appeal
is a seven-year, unlimitedkilometre
warranty – a strong
statement of confidence from
GWM in the Tank’s durability.
The diesel powertrain is
responsive enough, but no more
than that, and pulling power is
merely adequate.
It’s not a class leader for
performance, but it is a
dependable workhorse –
well suited to the Tank 300’s
demanding on- and off-road
lifestyle.
Greater smoothness and
refinement would improve its
appeal, particularly in urban
driving where the engine can
sound gruff under acceleration.
It settles down on the open
road, however, becoming quieter
and more composed, and
proves to be a capable long-distance
cruiser.
Paired with GWM’s in-house
nine-speed automatic transmission,
the drivetrain is capable
of managing up to 750Nm of
torque. The transmission generally
performs well, although the
occasional hesitant or clunky
shift detracts slightly from the
overall experience.
In terms of size, the Tank
300 measures 4600mm long,
1930mm wide and 1903mm
tall, with a generous 2750mm
wheelbase.
These dimensions compare
well with many rivals, although
the 400-litre boot capacity is disappointing
for a vehicle of this
size.
The cabin itself is more
impressive, offering ample
space front and rear, with a light
and airy feel – though some of
the darker hard plastics detract
from the ambience.
The driver monitoring system,
previously criticised for its constant
nagging, has been toned
down.
The intrusive voice alerts are
gone, replaced by less obtrusive
chimes. These can be switched
off via the touchscreen,
although frustratingly this must
be done each time the vehicle is
restarted.
The Ultra sits at the top of the
range and comes loaded with
features. Highlights include
18-inch alloy wheels and a side
step for easier access.
Inside, imitation Nappa
leather-accented seats offer
eight-way power adjustment,
along with memory and massage
functions for the front
occupants.
A 12.3-inch touchscreen
handles infotainment duties
and is straightforward to use.
Safety tech is comprehensive,
including adaptive cruise
control, a 360-degree camera,
lane departure warning and
blind-spot monitoring.
The brakes, however, can
feel slightly grabby and lack
smooth modulation.
Underneath, the Tank 300
sticks with proven mechanicals
– double wishbone suspension
up front and a multi-link
set-up at the rear. This robust
configuration supports its offroad
capability, which feels
considerable, even if it wasn’t
fully tested.
On sealed roads, both in town
and on the open highway, the
ride is competent but could be
improved.
At lower speeds over rough
urban surfaces, it can feel
bouncy and would benefit from
better cushioning.
The steering is well weighted,
making for a pleasant drive,
though greater feedback and
communication would help lift
the driving experience beyond
its current, somewhat average
level.
