world. With a value of approximately
USD 32 billion, it ranks among
the top global players in beauty
and personal care. Yet for European
brands, entering Japan requires more
than product quality—it demands
preparation, cultural understanding
and regulatory precision. We spoke
with Professor Paolo Cacciato about
what it truly takes to succeed.
How would you describe the
Japanese beauty market today?
Japan is a mature and highly
structured market with consumers
who possess strong purchasing power
and refined expectations. Growth
is moderate but stable, particularly
in the premium segment. Japanese
consumers are extremely attentive to
formulation quality, texture, safety
and packaging aesthetics. Beauty
is perceived as part of personal
wellbeing, not merely appearance.
What mistakes do European brands
most commonly make?
The rst mistake is underestimating
the sophistication of the market.
High standards are the norm. The
second is choosing distribution
partners without understanding
how hierarchical and relationshipbased
the Japanese system is.
Finally, many companies approach
distributors before ensuring full
regulatory compliance. Without
proper preparation, discussions rarely
progress.
What are the key regulatory
steps to consider?
To sell in Japan, brands must work
with a licensed local partner who
registers the product. The rocess
requires complete documentation
and can take six months or more,
depending on complexity. Planning
is essential. Regulatory preparation
should begin well before any
commercial negotiations.
How do Japanese distributors
evaluate foreign brands?
Th y look for consistency and
credibility. Product quality is
fundamental, but so is brand
positioning. A clear narrative,
coherent ingredient philosophy and
packaging that resonates with local
aesthetics are decisive factors. Trust is
built gradually and requires long-term
commitment.
How important are packaging
and communication?
In Japan, packaging is part of the
product’s value. Design tends to be
refined, often minimalist, and must
communicate precision and reliability.
Storytelling should emphasise
authenticity, ingredient integrity
and craftsmanship. Every detail
contributes to perceived quality.
Is interest in Made in Italy growing?
Yes. Japanese consumers increasingly
appreciate the combination of Italian
creativity, quality and technical
expertise. Skincare, particularly antiageing,
performs well. International
events and stronger institutional
presence have also reinforced the
visibility of Italian brands in Japan.
What advice would you give to
companies considering Japan?
First, view Japan as a complex
ecosystem rather than a simple export
destination. Second, use trade fairs
and market visits as opportunities
to observe and learn before selling.
Third, prepare thoroughly–regulatory,
logistical and marketing aspects must
be aligned from the start.

market in India?
India is at a pivotal stage. Driven by a
young population, rapid urbanisation
and rising aspirations, it is among the
fastest-growing professional markets
worldwide. The s lon segment –
especially haircare – is expanding at
high single- to low double-digit rates,
outperforming mass beauty.
In terms of maturity, India sits
between emerging and developed
markets. While the structure remains
fragmented with many independent
salons, the top tier already operates
at international standards.
Standardisation is still evolving,
but India shows strong technical
openness and appetite for global
trends.

Where do you see the biggest
opportunities for international
brands?
Haircare leads the way, particularly
professional colour, advanced treatments,
bond repair systems and scalp
solutions. Clients are increasingly educated
and expect visible, lasting results.
Premiumisation, clean formulations
and men’s grooming are also gaining
traction. Education-driven brands
have a clear advantage. Companies
positioning themselves as knowledge
partners – not just product suppliers –
build stronger credibility and longterm
loyalty.
What mistakes do brands most
often make?
Pricing is frequently miscalculated.
Import duties, margins and credit
structures can quickly erode
competitiveness. Positioning is
equally critical: being international
is no longer enough. Brands must
demonstrate clear diff rentiation and
local relevance.
Communication requires adaptation.
Hair texture, climate and consumer
expectations diff r signifi antly
from Western markets. Distributor
selection is another risk area; choosing
partners based solely on reach rather
than education capability and
strategic alignment can limit growth
early on.
What should companies know from
a regulatory standpoint?
India is regulated but manageable.
Compliance with ingredient approvals,
labelling and documentation is
essential. Incomplete fi ings often cause
delays, and import timelines typically
range from three to six months. Claims
must be substantiated. With proper
planning, the process is transparent
and predictable.
How important are local partners
and trade fairs?
Th y are fundamental. India functions
as a collection of regional ecosystems.
Strong distributors provide market
access, education and insight into
salon behaviour.
Trade fairs play a crucial role as trustbuilding
platforms. Many long-term
partnerships in India begin at these
events.
Your three key pieces of advice?

Which Latin American countries
are showing the strongest growth
in professional beauty today, and
which remain more unstable?
LATAM – spanning Central
America, the Caribbean and South
America – is a diverse but generally
dynamic region with strong
demographic potential and growing
demand for professional beauty.
Among the best-performing markets
are Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala,
Mexico, Colombia, Chile and
Argentina. Venezuela remains a
potential opportunity should political
conditions stabilize. While each
country has distinct economic and
political dynamics, overall growth
often surpasses that of mature
European markets, though always
influenced by currency stability
against the US dollar.
If you were a beauty company
today, which LATAM markets
would you consider “ready” for
entry – and why?
These arkets can be divided into
two main groups.
The rst – including Colombia,
Mexico and Argentina – features
strong local manufacturing. In these
countries, competing on price alone is
extremely diffi lt; brand awareness
and positioning are essential.
The s cond group is more importdriven,
with limited domestic
production. Here, brands can leverage
both price and image, and there is
signifi ant potential for customized
private label projects tailored to
distributors’ needs.
Understanding which category a
country falls into is key to defining the
right entry strategy.
In professional haircare, which
categories are performing best?
Hair color remains the core driver,
deeply rooted in salon culture and
generating recurring demand.
Strong “wet lines” – shampoos,
conditioners and styling products –
also perform well, especially when
supported by distinctive packaging
and fragrances. Visually appealing
brands resonate strongly with Gen Z
consumers, who are highly responsive
to image and identity.
How central is the local distributor?
Local distributors are indispensable in
LATAM. Effic nt logistics, structured
sales teams and deep territorial
coverage are essential to achieve
meaningful market penetration.
In larger markets such as Mexico,
master distributors often work
through regional partners. For
European brands, selecting a
distributor with solid infrastructure
and genuine local connections is
critical to sustainable growth.
What are the main barriers to entry
for European beauty companies?
In most cases, the biggest barrier is the
company itself.
Entering a market without visiting
it personally – or without relying on
experienced local professionals – is the
most common mistake. Regulatory
and operational challenges can be
managed, but only with proper
market knowledge.
Understanding local dynamics, key
players, demographics and consumer
specifics is undamental to building a
realistic and eff ctive business plan.
What role do trade fairs in São
Paulo and Mexico City play?
Trade fairs are important, but they
should not be the starting point.
Before investing in large booths and
travel budgets, brands should first
establish a direct presence on the
ground.
A gradual approach is advisable: visit
the market, work with local specialists,
build relationships and only then
consider exhibiting at major shows.
Looking ahead to 2026, where
should brands focus?
Latin America continues to off r
stronger growth prospects than many
European markets, albeit with higher
currency risks in some countries.
At present, Central America –
particularly Mexico, Panama,
Guatemala and Costa Rica – appears
relatively less exposed to severe
monetary fluctuations and off rs a
compelling balance between stability
and expansion potential. For brands
willing to invest strategically, LATAM
remains one of the most promising

How do physical retail and digital
channels coexist in your strategy?
It’s not about choosing one over the
other – it’s about integration. Our
200+ retail outlets are more than
shops: they are education centres and
experience hubs. E-commerce and
digital tools provide convenience and
deeper customer insight, personalising
the journey and strengthening
engagement. Physical and digital
channels together shape a seamless
brand experience.
What do you see as the biggest
challenges and opportunities for
the beauty industry ahead?
The ndustry faces rising costs,
regulatory complexity and
misinformation spread through
social media. Yet innovation –
from personalised solutions to
AI-driven insights – is accelerating.
Sustainability will no longer be
optional; brands must show real
commitment to ethical sourcing,
safer formulations and measurable
environmental impact. Those ho
balance innovation with credibility,

the professional segment. We spoke
with Ewa Cesarz, Editor of Estetica
Magazine Polska, for a strategic
overview of opportunities, risks and
future developments.
How would you describe the current
state of the professional beauty
market in Poland?
The olish professional cosmetics
and hairdressing market is one
of the fastest-growing in Europe,
with growth above the EU average.
Professional cosmetics have expanded
signifi antly, with nearly 20% more
salons between 2021 and 2025.
Hairdressing, however, saw a slight
decline in salon numbers in recent
years.
The arket is highly fragmented and
dominated by small and mediumsized
businesses. Independent salons
prevail, supported by franchise chains.
Distributors play a crucial role in
building brand communities, while
e-commerce continues to grow.
Professionalisation has increased
substantially: technical education,
certifi ation programmes and business
training are expanding. EU-funded
training initiatives have strengthened
the educational segment, now one
of the most profi able areas of the
professional market. While Poland is
still less mature than France, Germany
or the UK, it shows higher growth
potential, particularly in the premium
segment.
What opportunities exist for
international brands?
Poland combines rising consumption
with strong openness to new brands.
The mo t promising segments include
natural and clean beauty, premium and
dermocosmetics, men’s grooming and
barbering, trichology, and microbiomefocused
products. Education remains a
key driver of brand development.
Professional distributors and
wholesalers are the primary channels,
although drugstores and e-commerce
also play a growing role.
What mistakes do foreign companies
commonly make?
The mo t frequent mistake is choosing
the wrong partner without adequate
market knowledge. Some brands
perceive Poland as a “cheap” market
and copy Western pricing strategies
without adapting to local realities.
Overpricing without clear value
justifi ation often leads to low turnover
and rapid exit.
Another common error is weak
positioning–being “premium for
everyone” without clear diff rentiation.
Communication mistakes include
literal translations of global materials
and underestimating the importance
of local ambassadors and technical
education. Trust must be built locally.
What regulatory aspects should
exporters understand?
All products must comply with EU
Regulation 1223/2009, including
CPSR, PIF documentation, CPNP
notifi ation and designation of a
Responsible Person. Labelling must be
fully compliant and available in Polish.
Import from EU countries does not
require customs clearance, while
non-EU imports involve duties and
VAT. Preparation time for a new
brand is typically three to six months,
including documentation, translations
and logistics. Inspections often
focus on labelling accuracy and PIF
documentation.
What role do distributors and trade
fairs play?
Local distributors are essential. Th y
provide logistics, access to salon
networks and educational support.
In Poland, personal relationships still
matter greatly. A competent sales
agent can signifi antly accelerate
development.
Trade fairs rarely generate immediate
sales but are crucial for visibility,
networking and benchmarking. Success
depends less on the number of partners
and more on selecting financially solid,
strategically aligned collaborators
with strong educational teams and
good market reputation.
Three practical pieces of advice for
brands entering Poland?
First, choose a reliable and experienced
partner who understands your
segment.
Second, invest in professional market
research and a dedicated local strategy.
Third, continuously monitor

AIMING FOR PERFECTION:
QUALITY AND INNOVATION
Back in 1958, Gilles le Bret, an enlightened
chemist and botanist from Aix-en-Provence in
southern France, the home of natural beauty
known for landscapes burgeoning with flowers
and grass, set up a technical laboratory
for the purpose of researching the benefits
that botanic extracts may offer the human
body and, more specifically, hair cells. Then
in 1965, with a view to applying the results of
his research to the products themselves, Gilles
le Bret formally found Dancoly Cosmetique,
specialised in manufacturing a series of
cosmetics formulated with botanical extracts.
Four years later, the Dancoly Spa series was
initially launched as the first brand formulated
with botanical extracts and oils able to
meet the specific needs of different hair types,
contributing to the success of these products
with end users.

was born in 1964, in a small three-room laboratory
