Running the stop sign
and risking it all
Wendy Kennard had a terrifying near miss when a driver
shot straight through a stop sign at the intersection of
Weedons Ross and Maddisons Rds, leaving her fearing
for her life. With crashes caused by drivers failing to
stop or give way at intersections on the rise in Selwyn,
safety upgrades and extra enforcement are on the
way — but the AA warns driver complacency remains a
major problem.
Below, the intersection of Tennyson St and State
Highway 1, Rolleston, is the site of the most
crashes in the district. Story, page 7
The origin of April Fool’s Day
is a bit of a mystery.
It ranges from the adoption
of the Gregorian calendar
in 16th-century France,
when those who continued
to celebrate the new year
around April 1 instead of
January 1 were mocked and
called “April Fool’s”, to the
ancient Roman festival of
Hilaria at the end of March,
where people dressed up and
played tricks on one another,
according to Google.
On page 3 today, we have
a selection of pranks in the
district, including one from
councillor Sam Wilshire on
the hotly debated signage
issue at Te Ara Ātea in
Rolleston.
It has reignited the debate,
of course. There is nothing
wrong with debate. It
reminds me of an April Fool’s
prank some years ago when
the The (Christchurch) Star’s
community papers published
an article saying major
cracks had been found in the
cathedral in the Square and it
was going to be pulled down.
The papers were published
on a Sunday, and that
particular year April 1 was a
Sunday.
The article said the
cathedral site had been
bought by Russian oligarchs
The wind up did not go
down well with the majority;
many believing it was true.
The backlash was severe,
some of it brutal. One
caller told me whoever
was responsible needed
whipping. Another said she
was going to inflict a lot
of business pain. When I
said that didn’t sound very
Christian-like, she hung up.
Wilshire’s pales in
comparison. But it will
probably secured him votes
next time around.
April Fool’s joke reignites name debate
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Has Te Ara Ātea finally got the
name change many people have
been calling for?
The new name appeared on
the building last Wednesday –
April 1. Not on the building as
such but on a digitally edited
image on Facebook, an April
Fools’ Day prank by councillor
Samuel Wilshire, one of several
staged across the district.
Wilshire said “99%” of people
understood the post was
tongue-in-cheek.
“I did not intend to offend
anyone,” he said.
“For anyone who has been
offended by it, I am sorry. It
clearly is still a contentious
issue, and perhaps I was under
the false impression it had been
put to bed.”
In the comments under
Wilshire’s post reaction was
mixed, with some hoping it
was real and others saying the
building’s name should remain
unchanged.
Whether Te Ara Ātea should
include the word “library” on
the building has been debated
since 2022, when the Rolleston
Residents Association pushed
for the addition.
The name Te Ara Ātea was
gifted by Te Taumutu rūnanga
in 2018 and translates to “the
unobstructed trail to the world
and beyond” and reflects the
centre’s role as a place for
learning, gathering, connecting,
exploring, and celebrating the
district’s heritage and people.
The name issue resurfaced
A tongue-in-cheek April Fool’s
Day name change for Te Ara
Ātea was among several
pranks across the district,
including a new doughnut for
the roof of the Springfield
Hotel and the addition of
canned air to the shelves at
Rolleston Pak‘nSave.
during last year’s local election
campaign, when it was raised at
a meet-the-candidates event in
Rolleston.
Wilshire said he did not expect
the level of reaction his lighthearted
post received.
He said those passionate
about the issue should make a
submission on the draft Annual
Plan, which is open for public
feedback until April 26.
“I like the building and the
gifted name personally, but
understand that some feel
disenfranchised without English
or any other language, for that
matter, on the building.”
“I respect and honour the
relationship we have with our
local rūnanga.”
Elsewhere across the district,
April Fools’ Day brought a range
of light-hearted stunts.
The Springfield Hotel appeared
to sport a giant doughnut on
its roof, Rolleston Pak’nSave
introduced canned “Rolleston
air”, and Selwyn Aquatic Centre
claimed it would start checking
swimmers’ speeds to ensure they
were using the correct lane.
Lincoln Volunteer Fire
Brigade also joked it had
switched to lavender-scented
foam to reduce the fire smell.
In brief
Search for new chief
executive under way
The council has started the
recruitment process for its next
permanent chief executive. Former
chief executive Sharon Mason
resigned in December to take up
the top role at the City of Onkaparinga
council in Adelaide. Steve
Gibling has been interim chief executive
since February. The council
has appointed Christchurch executive
search company, Sheffield, to
lead the recruitment. Applications
for the job close on April 29.
Land zoned for
housing on the market
Carter Group is selling 28ha of
“shovel-ready” residential-zoned
land in west Rolleston. Bayleys
agent Chris Jones said the zoning
allows for 476 homes to be built
at a density of 17 homes a hectare.
The land was part of Carter’s
Rolleston West subdivision, which
is expected to have 3500 homes on
Dunns Crossing Rd. Price estimates
for the land range from about $40-
$50 million, with a deadline for the
sale of April 15.
Bus review delayed
An Environment Canterbury review
of Rolleston’s extra bus services
operated by Bentley Coachlines has
been delayed due to the ongoing
fuel crisis caused by the Middle
East conflict. ECan told district
councillors in a briefing the review
had been delayed to not interrupt
the service while fuel prices were
high. Bentley has recently seen a
21% passenger increase.
Cancer patient
forced to head
offshore for
treatment
BY CAITLIN DUFTY
“Basically what the health
system is saying to me is, that’s
it. You’re done.”
That is the reality West Melton
resident Mike Oliver is
grappling with as he battles an
incurable blood cancer.
Oliver is calling for better
access to life-extending treatments
after being told the
option that could give him
more time is not funded in New
Zealand.
Now, Oliver and his wife
Nicky are preparing to travel
to China, where the treatment
could cost between $125,000
and $400,000.
“There’s a lot of Kiwis in the
same position – spending a
fortune to go overseas and get
treatment because it’s just not
available here,” he said.
In May last year, the 48-yearold
father-of-two was living a
normal life when persistent
back pain began to take hold.
“I had quite a bit of back
pain for probably two or three
months… and, you know, as a
good Kiwi bloke, I just ignored
it,” he said.
When holidaying in Fiji the
pain became unbearable, so he
decided to seek help.
Within weeks, after a series of
tests, Oliver was diagnosed with
multiple myeloma – a blood
cancer affecting plasma cells in
the bone marrow.
“He sat me down and gave me
that message you never want to
hear – you’ve got cancer.
“It just felt surreal. S**t, I’m
actually sitting here being told
that I’ve got cancer… and by the
way, it’s incurable.”
He began treatment through
the public system, undergoing
months of induction therapy
– an initial form of chemotherapy.
He also privately funded an
additional drug to give himself
the best chance.
Mike Oliver is travelling to China to receive cancer treatment not available in New Zealand.
In October, he underwent a
stem cell transplant.
“It was quite an arduous sort of
process. Some have an easy ride,
some don’t,” he said.
Oliver spent three weeks
recovering in Christchurch Hospital
following the transplant
and was back at work after a few
months of recovery.
Initially, the treatment
appeared to be working.
However, earlier this year, pain
in his torso led to further scans,
which revealed a more aggressive
form of cancer known as
non-secretory myeloma – a type
that does not show up on standard
blood tests.
Now, Oliver is on what doctors
say is the final funded treatment
option available in New Zealand.
While he praises the care he
has received from specialists,
Oliver said the health system
itself is falling short.
“The options for blood cancer
are just so limited. There’s almost
no recognition of it.”
Specialists have told him
CAR T-cell therapy offers his
best chance of survival, but it
is not publicly available in New
Zealand.
Dr Alicia Didsbury, an Auckland
researcher leading efforts to
bring CAR T-cell therapy to New
Zealand, said Oliver’s situation is
becoming increasingly common.
She said patients are often
forced to raise hundreds of
thousands of dollars to access
treatment overseas – something
many simply cannot do.
“It’s terrible. We have families
contacting us every week saying
they’ve reached the end of their
treatment options.”
Didsbury’s project aims to
make these therapies more
accessible and affordable but
says significant funding and system
changes are needed.
For Oliver, the focus now is on
getting overseas as quickly as
possible.
The family has launched a
Givealittle page, supported by a
wave of community fundraising.
“It’s been totally humbling. It’s
hard to ask for help, but the support
has been overwhelming,”
Oliver said.
The support from friends,
family and even strangers has
carried him through.
“I just want time with my
family. You get told you have this
incurable disease – what keeps
me going is just wanting to see
my girls as long as I can.”
Feedback rolling in on Council’s plan for the district
More than 200 Selwyn residents and organisations have had their say on Selwyn District Council’s draft Annual
Plan 2026/27, as the consultation enters its final three weeks.
The Council has so far received 245 submissions on
its proposals for the district. Those who are yet to have
their say are being encouraged to provide their feedback
by 26 April so that it can be considered by Councillors
before final decisions are made.
Three weighted average rates increase options of 6.5%,
5.4% and 4.9% are being considered for 2026/27, which
are all lower than had been previously signaled. Cost
savings totaling at least $9.2 million are included in all
three options.
People are being asked which rates option they support
and if they agree with the Council’s proposal to scale
back spending and move towards a more ‘user-pays’
system, where appropriate.
The cost-savings initiatives would affect fees and
charges; the district’s economic development
programme; the Capital Works Programme; grant
funding; Council-run community events; the District
Park project (Rolleston); and Council operations
including opening hours on public holidays, library-run
programmes, and the delivery of Council strategies.
Everyone in Selwyn is invited to have their say. Feedback
will help the Council determine if what is proposed is the
right path for the district.
The Tennyson St/State Highway 1 intersection in Rolleston has recorded 16 crashes in the past five years. The Shands, Springston Rolleston and Weedons Rds intersection, with 12 crashes, is set to be
replaced with a roundabout in 2027, following upgrades like the Shands/Hamptons Rds intersection.
What’s going wrong at intersections
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Wendy Kennard saw her “life
flash before her eyes” when a
driver ran straight through a
stop sign in front of her.
Kennard was travelling from
Rolleston to West Melton along
Weedons Ross Rd when a car
“shot out like a rocket” from
Maddisons Rd without stopping.
“I slammed on my brakes and
just missed it,” she said.
“It was so fast I didn’t even see
the colour of the car.”
Her near miss happened at an
intersection with flashing warning
lights positioned about 100m
before the stop sign.
Kennard said she regularly
sees drivers run a stop sign at
the intersection.
While she had a lucky escape,
the latest crash figures show the
problem is growing across the
district’s intersections.
Of the 353 crashes in Selwyn
registered by NZ Transport
Agency Waka Kotahi in 2025,
drivers failing to stop or give
way contributed to 113 of 353
crashes in 2025. Two were fatal,
13 caused serious injuries, 44
minor injuries, and 54 had no
injuries.
The problem has been growing
steadily.
In 2021, 66 crashes involved
drivers failing to stop or give
way. By 2024, that number had
risen to 98. Over the past five
years, such failures accounted
for roughly 27% of 1621 crashes
– making it the leading contributing
factor.
Kennard lives in West Melton
and works at the Dandelion and
Clover cafe in the township.
Cafe owner Jenny Swift has
had her own near miss at the
same intersection while waiting
to turn onto Weedons Rd.
Swift believes driver complacency,
not the roads themselves,
is behind the increase.
“Ask anyone in Selwyn, and
they all have similar stories. People
are complacent, in a rush to
get home, they might think they
know the road,” she said.
“I just sat there, braced, put
my head back on the headrest,
thinking the worst was going to
happen,” she said.
“The guy just sailed straight
up behind me, around me, and
straight over the intersection.”
She said the extra signage
meant the stop sign was impossible
to miss.
Councillor Denise Carrick,
who campaigned before the
election on improving intersections,
said she was not surprised
crash numbers had increased
and believed the true figure was
likely higher.
“The actual reality is worse
Wendy Kennard had to slam on her brakes to avoid a crash at the Weedons Ross Rd/Maddisons Rd intersection.
MORE CRASHES
BUT LESS SEVERE
• From 2014-2019 there were 478
crashes, about 79.7 a year.
• From 2020-2025 there were 516
crashes, about 103.2 a year.
• When comparing 2014-2019 to
2020-2025, fatalities fell from 11 to
four, serious casualties remained
almost the same at 82 to 83, minor
injury crashes almost doubledfrom
108 to 199 and non‐injury crashes
rose from 300 to 353.
than the stats.
There will be
some that don’t
get recorded,
and the near
misses don’t get
recorded,” she
said.
Carrick said she
does not have a Denise Carrick
specific plan for
upgrades but continues to relay
community concerns to council
staff.
The council uses software
to prioritise intersections and
has 24 upgrades planned for
2025/26, ranging from extra
signage and road markings to
improved lighting and intersection
realignment.
Carrick said infrastructure
is not keeping pace with population
growth was another
possible factor.
“Many of the roads used to be
just rural roads, but now they
are main commuter roads.”
She said improving safety at
one intersection often highlights
problems at another.
While crash numbers have
been rising, the number of tickets
issued by police at stop signs
has been decreasing.
There were 945 tickets issued
in 2021, 478 in 2022, 385 in 2023,
514 in 2024, and 417 in 2025.
In response to the statistics,
acting Canterbury rural
area commander Inspector
Paul Reeves said police
adjust their deployment to
reflect any increases at specific
intersections.
“Our message to road users
remains simple: Speed limits and
road signage are in place for a
reason, to ensure the safety of all
road users,” he said.
“We continue to make no apology
for taking action against
drivers who are breaking the
law, driving dangerously and
putting all road users at risk.”
Automobile Association Canterbury
West Coast District
Council chair John Skevington
said more enforcement is
needed but acknowledged police
cannot be everywhere.
He said AA Research Foundation
findings from 2024 showed
about a third of drivers failed to
notice an intersection
was ahead.
“A lot of crashes
happen at these
intersections
because many
rural roads are
high-speed areas
with long straight
approaches and
light traffic. Visibility
of upcoming
John
Skevington
intersections and bisecting roads
is often poor, and signage and
markings can be minimal,” he
said.
The research found simple
changes, such as advanced signage
and extra road markings,
helped drivers spot intersections
up to 160m earlier — about six
seconds sooner when travelling
at 100km/h.
Skevington said even with
upgrades on many rural roads,
drivers either not paying attention
or being too comfortable on
their regular route continued to
be a major factor in crashes.
Upgrades on the way
All five of the top intersections
for crashes in the last five years
have either been upgraded or
have upgrades scheduled.
• The Tennyson St, State Highway
1 intersection, which saw
the most crashes in the last five
years (16), will be changed to
left-turn only as part of stage
NOT STOPPING
Crashes where failing to stop or
give way was a contributing factor:
2021: 66 out of 282 crashes
2022: 78 out of 320 crashes
2023: 88 out of 333 crashes
2024: 98 out of 333 crashes
2025: 113 out of 353 crashes
two of the Rolleston highway
upgrades, with construction due
to start later this year.
• The SH1, Dunns Crossing
and Walkers Rds intersection,
which saw 15 crashes, is currently
being replaced with a
roundabout.
• The Shands and Hampton
Rds intersection which also saw
15 crashes, was replaced with a
roundabout last year.
• Shands, Springston Rolleston,
Weedons Rds intersection,
which has seen 12 crashes in the
last five years, is due be replaced
with a roundabout in 2027. The
upgrade was due to be completed
by the council this year,
but was pushed back because it
did not get co-funding from NZ
Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.
The council is now funding the
full $1.2m project itself.
• The SH1, Burnham and
Aylesbury Rds intersection is due
to have a roundabout installed
following the completion of the
Dunns Crossing work.

Lighting small fires
to prevent big ones
What is the best way to
understand how bushfires start?
By starting one, of course.
Lincoln University PhD
student Georgia Stevenson
has spent hours setting alight
the forest floor of Craigieburn
Forest Park to understand how
fires spread in native beech
forests.
With her research, she could
help develop a new, far more
accurate fire warning system
for New Zealand’s native
forests and potentially prevent
devastating forest fires in the
future.
At present, New Zealand uses
a fire warning system based on
a Canadian model, which was
designed for pine forests.
“Nobody’s looked at our
native forests before. We don’t
actually know if these old
models actually relate to our
native forests in a useful way,”
Stevenson said.
“New Zealand’s most
extensive native forest species is
beech. We know it can be quite
susceptible to fires, but we don’t
know how different conditions,
such as moisture, affect it.”
Stevenson graduated from
Lincoln with a Bachelor of
Science in Conservation and
Ecology in 2015, and her latest
research began about two years
ago.
At the time, the Burnham
resident was studying to
become a legal executive.
“I actually saw one of the crazy
wildfires in Aussie on the news
that night. I thought, ‘maybe I
should do something about that’.
“I was always into plants
and ecology. I did my honours
research at Lincoln on frost.
Then I went away for about ten
years.”
Her honours research supervisor,
Tim Curran, was a
specialist in fire research, so
Stevenson got in touch and was
soon working on her PhD.
“I’m happy to be doing something
meaningful,” she said.
Over the past summer, Stevenson
has been lighting small,
contained fires in the field and
measuring how long it takes for
the burn to spread.
Stevenson is always accompanied
by at least four firefighters,
who have volunteered their
time to help with the research.
“They’ve got all the equipment,
so it’s super safe. We only
allow the fire to spread 30cm
before extinguishing it. We’re
really cautious.”
The main variable at play is
moisture content, so Stevenson
collects material from the forest
floor and weighs it. She then
dries the litter and reweighs it,
allowing her to calculate the
moisture content.
By conducting these experiments,
Stevenson can determine
the thresholds at which fires
in beech forests can ignite and
spread. Her research will help
Lincoln University PhD student Georgia
Stevenson has been lighting contained
30cm fires in Craigieburn Forest
Park to better model bushfires and
understand how they spread.
predict and manage any future
wildfires in beech forests.
Her research is based not far
from the site of the 2024 Bridge
Hill fire, which burnt more than
1000ha of high-country land
across multiple days. Stevenson
wants to help prevent a disaster
like that from happening again.
Her research is supported by
the Bioeconomy Science Institute
Maiangi Taiao and funded by a
Ministry of Business, Innovation
and Employment project
aimed at better understanding
ignition conditions in native
forests. The Brian Mason
Scientific and Technical Trust
has also contributed funding to
Stevenson’s work.
Engagement starts on
future of rural hospitals
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Health officials have started targeted
engagement on the future of Darfield
and Ellesmere hospitals.
Health New Zealand spokesman Greg
Hamilton said insights from the engagement,
alongside analysis of existing
services and national strategies, will
help inform a local health services plan
for the communities.
Concerns about Darfield
Hospital were raised after
the new owners of Darfield
Medical Centre did
not continue providing
doctor services to the hospital,
as it was not part of
the sale agreement.
Hamilton said Darfield
currently has one patient,
while Ellesmere has six.
Greg Hamilton
“We are in discussion with primary care
services who are interested in providing
the medical cover for Darfield, which will
enable the return of respite and end-oflife
care for this community," he said.
“No decisions have been made regarding
future investment at this stage.”
There are no indications of a similar
issue at Ellesmere Hospital, which is
staffed by doctors from Leeston Medical
Centre.
Friends of Ellesmere Hospital
chair Murray Lemon welcomed the
engagement.
He said as Leeston grows, a key consideration
is ensuring services are available
locally to reduce the need for people to
travel to Christchurch for medical care.
Health NZ is also developing a national
Discussions between Health NZ and primary care
services interested in providing medical cover for
Darfield Hospital are ongoing, with no decisions
yet made on the facility’s future.
rural health services framework to
provide clearer and more consistent guidance
on the services rural communities
can expect to access locally.
Said Hamilton: “The framework is
intended to set minimum expectations
for access to care, rather than limit
what services may be available, and will
support long-term planning and decisionmaking
across rural communities. Once
approved, expected later in 2026, it will
be implemented incrementally over a
number of years.
“As a national planning tool, the
framework will guide decisions based on
factors such as population size, distance
to larger services, and local health needs.
It is not designed to prescribe services for
individual communities.”
Seven children, one hip
Janet always dreamed of retiring
to the Hawke’s Bay.
She and her husband had talked
about it for years. The wineries. The
orchards. Long walks through the
countryside that people travelled
from all over the world to see.
And after raising seven children,
surely she’d earned the right to
enjoy what came after.
“I carried all seven of my kids on
that hip,” she says. “It’s just what
you do as a mum. You don’t think
about what it might mean later.”
What it meant later was that her
hip remembered every single one
of them. Seven children, decades
of carrying them, and now her body
was asking for something back.
Janet found herself counting
benches. Not because she collected
them, but because every walk
started with a calculation of how
far to the next one, how long before
Koru FX
she’d need to stop, and whether it
was worth starting at all.
Cold mornings were the worst.
Her hip would stiffen overnight and
take half the day to loosen. By the
time it eased, the motivation had
gone.
“You adjust,” she says. “You tell
yourself this is just how it is now.”
She’d tried what was available.
Creams that promised so much but
nothing quite did the job for her.
Janet had made her peace with a life
smaller than what she had hoped
for.
Then her grandson came to visit.
He’d heard about Koru FX
through his work. Customers had
been talking about how this natural
cream had supported their joints
and muscles. He thought about his
grandmother, about her hip, and
about all those walks she couldn’t
take anymore.
He brought a few bottles and then
went to see her.
Janet was willing to try. But she
wasn’t expecting much. “Hope was
something I’d learned to ration,”
she admits.
Morning and night, she rubbed it
into her hip. It became part of her
routine, sitting right there on her
bedside table next to her reading
glasses.
The first cold morning surprised
her. Janet swung her legs out of bed
the way she always did, bracing for
the familiar stiffness. But something
was different.
Her hip moved.
Not perfectly, not like she was
twenty again. But it moved without
the usual fight.
Within weeks, she was moving
differently. Not having to think so
much. Not planning every step.
Walking became walking again.
The next time her grandson visited,
Janet made sure to tell him. The
wineries and orchards she’d dreamed
about were back within reach.
Always read the label and take as directed. If symptoms persist contact your healthcare professional. Koru Nutrition, Christchurch
“He was so chuffed,” she says.
“He’d wanted to help his nan, and
he had.”
These days, Janet keeps her Koru
FX close. Morning and night, and
more when the weather turns.
“I just love being able to get
out and about now,” she says. “To
walk around the wineries without
worrying about how far the next
seat is.”
Seven children. Decades of
carrying them. And now, finally, her
hip is letting her walk free.
“My grandson just wanted to help
his nan,” she says. “And he did.”
SPORT
Three more Lincoln life members
BY SAM COUGHLAN
“We do it for the love of
the game.” That is how the
Lincoln Cricket Club’s newest
life members felt as they
were celebrated at the club’s
prize-giving.
Bruce Tweedy, Richard Clark
and Adrian Paterson were
awarded the honour for their
services to the club.
Clark and Tweedy have been
members for more than 40
years and Paterson 25.
Clark’s involvement with
Lincoln started in 1984 as part
of the club’s first-ever junior
team, which was established by
his father Wayne.
"It's been a long association,”
he said.
He made his senior debut at
just 12 in 1988, and still turns
out for the club’s top team in
the Canterbury Country senior
grade who narrowly missed out
on the semi-finals this year.
Clark has played 434 senior
matches for the club and scored
more than 8800 runs.
"All of my contemporaries I
used to play with back in the
day, they've all either retired,
broken down or have moved on
to a bit more gentler T20 social
cricket," he said.
"But I still really enjoy playing
in that senior grade. I think I
can still contribute to the club.
We've got a young group of lads,
so I'd like to think that I can
pass on some knowledge and
experience.”
Clark has also been club
Richard Clark (left), Bruce Tweedy and Adrian Paterson (far right) were made life members of the Lincoln Cricket Club.
They were joined by fellow life member and club patron Wal Scott (second from right).
PHOTO: TERESA HANCOCK
secretary since 2015
and was president from
1996-2002.
His team play on pitches
prepared by Paterson who has
been the groundsman since
2017.
Paterson coached various
youth teams with Lincoln and
Ellesmere. His sons started
playing for Lincoln in 2001. Of
his three boys, two (Hugh and
Edgar) play for Lincoln’s top
team.
Said Paterson: “We used to
play on (the pitch) occasionally
with the high school teams at
Lincoln Domain.
“I got interested in that
because, up to that point, you
don't really think too much
about it. It's there on a Saturday
and they play on it, but I could
appreciate just how much time
and effort was going into it.”
Pitch preparation is
Paterson’s happy place,
away from his day job as a
zoology professor at Lincoln
University.
"It’s my kind of stress relaxing
kind of thing. You're just out
there all the time on a roller or
you're on a mower or you're
measuring up the pitches,
putting the water on and all
that sort of stuff. It's quite a
soothing thing for about half a
year.”
Tweedy is the second in
his family to receive a life
membership after his late
father Errol who served as
president from 1964-1995.
Tweedy’s involvement with
Lincoln started in the 1980s
after previous spells playing
for Springston as a junior
and Belfast while living in
Christchurch.
He ran Lincoln’s junior Kiwi
cricket programme in the 90s
and coached his sons from the
juniors up to senior B. He also
had a stint with the Ellesmere
under 15s.
These days at 72, he helps
Paterson look after the pitches
and is still on the club’s board.
"My enjoyment I get out of it
is giving something back to the
game I love, and I wish I could
still play, but I'm a bit old,” he
said.
Tweedy said the club was
in a good space heading into
next season."Volunteer-wise
it’s amazing, Lincoln's grown
so much and the junior section
is huge. We don't have enough
wickets on our domain to cater
for all our junior teams.
"We have a senior team who
performed very well this year
and we're hoping they stick
with the club and we can get
back into premiers if not next
year, the year after.”
ANTIQUES COLLECTABLES RETRO AND
VINTAGE FOR SALE AND DISPLAY
The world of Antiques and Collectables has moved on from those fine delicate ornate and
ostentatious pieces of china you saw on museum visits with granny, to things that resonate with
ordinary people things that all ages can relate to, things from our work places, modern pieces
of studio pottery by local artists people that lived down the road, to items we’ve rescued from
old buildings and residences.
These items fit into our homes don’t look out
of place enhance our décor, are able to be used
and enjoyed. For the man cave or blokes shed it
says something about the bloke you are giving a
boldness and colour to the dimly lit escape haven.
The Fair is not only one theme, it covers things
that are iconically Kiwi, from arts & crafts, pottery,
bottles, tins, toys, automobilia, kitchenalia, Crown
Lynn, jewellery, retro and mid-century, milk,
soft drink, medicine & beer bottles that once
contained all the manner of lotions, potions,
and cure all’s, from the tiniest of pocket knifes to
massive copper cauldrons to name but a few.
Antique Shops that were once in every town have all but gone being replaced by internet,
market place, hospice and charity shops.
The weekend of the 18th & 19th April, collectors from all over NZ are meeting to sell and
display at the Lincoln Events Centre there will be numerous displays passionately collected
everything from historical bottles, tobacco tins, uranium glass, whisky memorabilia,
automobilia, coins and bank notes, insulators, old toys, china, advertising signs, packaging, art
glass, household to name just few.
Be prepared to spend more time than you think to wander the sales booths and view the
impressive displays including one from Christchurch Archaeology with items unearthed
during some of their many digs around the district.
The collecting landscape is constantly evolving, but the enthusiasm never wanes. Items are not
only interesting but affordable and looking for new owners. You will surely return home with
a bag of goodies and with a desire to find that box with stuff mum dad or grannie had. Bring
Cash as not all vendors have Eftpos.
Amidst the modern chaos why not take the time to step back in time and discover a world we
left behind, a world that shaped where we are now, a world where recycling was the norm until
it was over taken by the plastic and throw away society.
This is a family orientated event and won’t disappoint.
The show is well worth a visit entry is Adults $2 school children free, all door proceeds go to
Dementia Canterbury.
There is an onsite café to recharge and rest between the sales area and viewing the displays.
There is a prize for the collector of the best display judged by public vote.
SPORT Selwyn Times, April 8, 2026 | 19
History-making life membership honours
decades of dedication to Canterbury Rugby
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Julie Patterson did not play
rugby as a child.
Growing up in Southbridge
in the 1970s, the sport was not
seen as one for girls. Although
she enjoyed watching games,
she instead played netball and
cricket.
Grandfather William was
patron at Southbridge RFC in
the 1960s while her father John
and his brothers all played for
the division 1 team.
“Southbridge is that kind of
small rural community where
everyone's supporting the local
rugby team,” she said.
“I guess that’s where my passion
for the sport grew.”
Now 60, Patterson is Canterbury
Rugby’s newest life
member – and the first woman
to receive the honour, which is
only bestowed to 10 people at
any given time.
“It’s pretty humbling, it's a
huge honour,” she said.
“Of course, the sport is male
dominated, but it doesn’t mean
women can’t contribute in
many ways, and they always
have done. You just have to go
to any club and see the contribution
that people are making.
“It’s a whole community that
you need to make these things
thrive.”
After moving to Christchurch
for university in 1985,
she started playing fullback for
Canterbury Rugby’s newest life member Julie Patterson, involved in governance
since the 1980s, pictured after serving on the citing panel for the 2025 Super
Rugby final. She previously made more than 100 appearances for University.
the University club and never
looked back, making more than
100 appearances while also representing
Canterbury for three
seasons in the early 1990s.
Off the field, she joined the
first Canterbury women’s advisory
board in 1989.
“That’s probably where my
first bit of beyond-club contribution
came,” she said.
She was also involved in
administration at University
and served on the first Metro
committee in 1995.
In 1996, she became part
of the Canterbury disciplinary
panel and has remained
involved ever since. She is also
part of the match-day citing
process for NPC and Super
Rugby games in Christchurch.
In 2019, she was appointed
Canterbury Rugby’s first-ever
female president.
“I don’t want to be the last in
these roles. I want to be one of
many,” she said.
“If you’re the first, it’s sometimes
a little bit challenging to
change people’s mindset. Anyone
that’s known me for the last
40 years knows my passion and
commitment to the sport has
been significant.
“There’s certainly more and
more female faces contributing
and providing that diversity of
thought, which will always help
get better outcomes.”
face off with
Hoff Shield
on the line
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Prebbleton and Waihora will
renew their rivalry on Saturday
when the sides meet for Hoff
Shield bragging rights.
The shield is currently held
by Prebbleton after their 32–31
victory last season.
The shield dates back to 1952,
when it was donated by the Hoff
family, who had ties to both clubs.
The match kicks off at 3pm,
alongside the other fixtures in
round three of the combined
country competition.
Southbridge, which hosted its
150th jubilee celebrations over
the weekend, will face Kaiapoi at
home, while Lincoln also plays at
home to Ohoka.
West Melton and Darfield
both travel south, to take on
Ashburton Celtic and Methven
respectively.
FOOD
Little bundles
of joy
The sweetness of carrots will
lift spirits at the autumn table,
writes Nigel Slater
CARROTS WITH CARDAMOM,
CREAM AND CASHEWS
Carrots respond to mild, sweet
spicing – the sort of softness
similar to that of a korma.
When it comes time to finish
the dish, you can successfully
add the cream while the stew
is simmering, but it is crucial to
remove it from the heat before
stirring in the yoghurt. To do so
while the dish is bubbling, even
slightly, risks the sauce curdling.
You could use small, new
parsnips, too, if you wish,
substituting them for half the
carrots.
Ingredients
Serves 4 as a main dish
2 medium onions
3 Tbsp vegetable oil or melted
butter
40g ginger
2 cloves garlic
1kg carrots
75g cashews, roasted and salted
12 green cardamom pods
2 tsp cumin seeds
2 tsp coriander seeds
1 tsp ground turmeric
½ tsp ground mild chilli powder
¼ tsp black pepper
750ml vegetable stock
1 stick cinnamon
15g coriander leaves
3 Tbsp cream
3 Tbsp natural yoghurt
Rice, steamed, to serve
Method
• Peel and roughly chop the
onions. Warm the oil or butter
in a large, deep pan over a
moderate heat – I use a heavy,
enamelled pan, 24cm in diameter
– then add the onions.
• Peel and grate the ginger on
the coarse side of a grater, then
add to the pan. Peel and finely
slice the garlic, then add to the
onions and continue cooking,
stirring regularly for 10-12
minutes, until the onions have
softened to a translucent, pale
gold.
• While the onions cook, open
the cardamom pods and scrape
out the seeds, then, using a spice
mill or pestle and mortar, grind
them to a gritty powder with the
cumin and coriander seeds. Stir
into the golden onions, then add
the ground turmeric, chilli and
black pepper.
• Let the spices toast fragrantly
for a minute or two, stirring
occasionally and taking care they
don’t burn, then finely chop and
add half of the salted, roasted
cashews. Reserve the other half.
• Halve the carrots lengthways,
then chop into 4-5cm lengths.
Once the onion, spice and nut
mixture is nicely toasted, stir in
the carrots and let them cook for
a minute or two before pouring
in the stock.
• Add the cinnamon stick, a
generous seasoning of salt and
bring to the boil. Lower the heat,
partially cover with a lid, then
simmer for 25 minutes or until
the carrots are just tender.
• Roughly chop the coriander.
Stir in the cream and when the
sauce is back up to temperature
remove from the heat then stir
in the yoghurt, reserved cashews
and chopped coriander. Serve
with rice.
CARROTS WITH BASIL CREAM
A favourite of mine, for the
way the mild tartness of the
creme fraiche contrasts with the
sweetness of the roasted carrots.
The whole dish tastes of
summer. A good side dish, this
way with carrots is also inviting
as a main dish, alongside
steamed brown rice flecked
with parsley and black pepper.
Ingredients
Serves 4 as a side dish
650g carrots
2 Tbsp olive oil
For the basil cream:
15g mixed parsley, basil and
dill
1 Tbsp lemon juice
3 Tbsp olive oil
100ml creme fraiche
Method
• Get out a roasting tin or
baking dish large enough to
hold the carrots and set the
oven at 200degC.
• Scrub the carrots – I only
peel them if their skins are
thick, which is unlikely at this
time of year – then slice them
in half lengthways.
• Put them into the roasting
tin, pour over the olive oil,
grind over a little salt and black
pepper, then tumble them
together so the carrots are well
coated with oil and seasonings.
• Roast in the preheated oven
for 45-50 minutes, turning them
over halfway through. They are
done when they are tender and
their edges have caramelised a
little.
• While the carrots are
roasting, make the basil cream.
Using a food processor, reduce
the parsley and basil leaves,
dill fronds and olive oil to a
thin, bright green paste. Scrape
into a bowl with a rubber
spatula then stir in the creme
fraiche.
• Remove the carrots from
the oven and transfer to a
serving dish, then trickle the
herb sauce over them and
serve.
Family fun made easy
The school holidays are here and while
it’s nice to have some free time, keeping
the kids occupied can be a struggle, and
if a trip into Christchurch, or further
afield, isn’t for you, then you’re in luck,
because there are some great options
right on your doorstep.
Keeping the whānau entertained,
especially when the weather isn’t great,
can be a challenge, particularly if you’re
trying to cater to little ones and older
kids but you’ll find something to suit
everyone without having to travel too far.
Younger kids will love a trip to
Chipmunks Indoor Playground
in Rolleston, located at 86 Iport Drive.
This indoor playground is a fantastic
choice during the colder months
and is designed to entertain children
aged 0-11 years. They offer birthday
party packages, making it an excellent
venue for celebrations, along with an
on-site café that serves delicious snacks
and meal options.
Just a few steps away, you’ll find the
recently opened Full Monty’s at 89
Iport Drive, which is packed with fun
activities for the whole family, and is a
great place to spend the day, particularly
if the weather isn’t on your side. The
new venue features 14 full bowling
lanes, two mini bowling lanes, state-ofthe-art
virtual golf, a couple of karaoke
rooms, and an arcade, as well as a
restaurant and fully licensed sports
bar, meaning there really is something
for everyone. If you’re planning a
big event, you can also book one of the
party rooms.
If the kids are feeling peckish, there’s
several places to choose from locally,
including the popular Gayle’s Food Bar
at 848 Jones Road, which is a great spot
to grab a bite, with a menu that includes
toasties, muffins, jumbo sausages, and
coffee, or The Butcher’s Pie Bakehouse
at Unit 3/855 Jones Road where you can,
of course, pick up a delicious pie as
well as sandwiches, rolls, homemade
sweet slices, donuts, scones, fries, and
mac ‘n’ cheese,
Or if you’re hoping for some childfree
time this Easter, then why not
make a day of it and head to Robbie’s
Rolleston Sport Bar & Restaurant,
located at 871 Jones Road? The venue
boasts 24 screens for sports viewing
and offers a range of activities,
including pool and darts. Guests can
also enjoy a diverse menu of food
options whether you’re looking for
a quick snack, a full meal, or a tasty
platter to share.
Preparing the soil for sowing success
Expert advice on what to do for
your garden this week
VEGETABLES
Depending on their position
and soil types, not all gardens
can be cultivated intensively
from now on. If this is the case in
your vegetable garden, consider
raised beds to give better
drainage and increased soil
warmth.
Rubbish should be cleaned
up and taken to a green waste
recycling depot or added to the
compost bin.
In colder months, compost
heaps rarely heat up enough
to destroy infective spores of
fungoid diseases or the eggs of
insect pests, so add only healthy
material.
Dig over areas that will not
have winter crops and apply lime
(100g per sq m). Fresh manure
can be added and will decompose
over winter. Alternatively,
sow lupin, oats or barley for digging
in during October as green
manure.
Plant out cabbages to mature
in spring. Sow broad beans about
2cm deep and in a double row,
with 20cm between the rows.
Beans transfer nitrogen to
the soil, a valuable side-effect of
growing the vegetable.
All crops should be kept weedfree
by hoeing around them.
Dig over areas of the vegetable garden that will not have winter crops and apply
lime. Fresh manure can be added and will decompose over winter. PHOTOS: GETTY
Hoeing lets excess moisture
evaporate and oxygen from the
air penetrate the upper layers of
soil for organisms that convert
organic material into plant food.
Hedges trimmed now will
remain tidy for the next six
months.
If severe trimming is needed to
reduce an overgrown hedge, cut
one side only and wait until new
growth is visible before doing the
second.
FLOWERS
Ground can be prepared over
the next month for planting roses
in winter and early spring.
Add plenty of manure, digging
deeply so it gets into the
lower levels of the soil. For light,
sandy soils, use fairly fresh cow
manure to retain moisture. Keep
manure at low depths and put
lime on top.
On heavy clays, straw, stable
manure or a rich garden compost
is preferable. Gypsum is invaluable
in helping break down clay.
Herbaceous plants such as
delphiniums and red hot pokers
(Kniphofia) will give better displays
if divided every few years.
Lift and divide using a sharp
spade. Replant pieces of strong
young growth.
Herbaceous plants such as red hot
pokers (Kniphofia) will give better
displays if divided every few years. Lift
and divide using a sharp spade. Replant
pieces of strong young growth.
Lupins and hollyhocks can be
divided in this way but are better
grown from seed unless a particular
colour is being retained.
Sweet pea seed can be sown
now for flowers in late spring.
Bijou, Cupid, Pixie Princess and
the Fantasy Dwarf series are lowgrowing
and need no staking.
In recent years, New Zealand
breeder Keith Hammett has
produced sweet peas such as
Renaissance, Pink Reflections
and Blue Reflections, with the
emphasis on bringing back more
intense perfume.
Old varieties still available
include Cupani, found by a monk
in Italy in 1695. Its flowers are
a deep blue with a purple wing.
Tuberous begonias can be dried
and stored away for the winter in
a dry frost-free place.
Gladioli can be lifted when the
foliage yellows. Shake off any soil
over a sack or sheet of plastic so
small corms can be retrieved,
then place in paper bags -never
use plastic or corms will rot –
with colour or variety name
written on them. Tie the neck of
the bag and hang gladioli to dry
completely, when foliage can be
removed and corms stored in
shallow boxes for replanting in
spring.
FRUIT
In the glasshouse, tomatoes
still with fruit to ripen can be
helped along by having most of
their leaves removed so plant
foods are diverted from the roots
into the fruit. If only a few fruit
are left, cut them off, attached to
a portion of stem, and hang in a
warm spot to ripen.
When harvesting is over, pull
the plants out immediately to let
the soil rest.
Tomatoes grown in pots or
bags should be removed and the
soil put on the garden, where it
will weather into rich soil.
Replace soil in greenhouses at
least every other year.
Similarly, Nature Journaling for
Beginners will encourage you to slow
down and connect with nature through
thoughtful and guided observation
exercises. Journaling helps train your
attention and deepens your sensory
awareness to build mindfulness.
This course is for the curious and
incorporates visits to nature sites
around the garden city.
Risingholme is also offering a range
of courses geared towards finding
your flow through gentle exercise
and mindful movement. Try a Tai Chi
Yang Style course that blends slow,
flowing movements with mindful
breathing to help you build strength,
improve balance, and cultivate inner
stillness. For those who have reduced
mobility or who want to incorporate
a little bit of movement whilst sitting
down at work, Easy Stretching and
Chair Yoga is an adaptable Yoga course
that takes you through stretches and
positions which can be completed
from the comfort of your seat. Finally,
The Ronnie Gardiner Method is a fun,
music‐driven, and accessible exercise
course that blends rhythm, movement,
and cognitive challenges to help boost
your coordination, focus, and energy.
Enrol in a Term 2 course now, term
starts on Monday 4 May.
thinking and spark good conversations.
Our top 5
autumn tips.
Autumn is a great planting time,
here are our top tips for the season.
1: Watch your watering.
As Canterbury heads into autumn, it’s time to wind back the watering. It might seem
counterintuitive, but overwatering is one of the most common causes of plant loss in
Selwyn, and the cooler months are when this catches most gardeners out.
As temperatures drop, plants need far less moisture. Shift to deep, thorough
waterings at longer intervals rather than frequent light sprinkles, getting water down
to that critical 30-40cm root zone. Then apply a generous layer of organic mulch
after a good soak, and you can almost turn the hose off until mid-spring.
2: Dig a $50 hole for a $15 tree.
This old saying is spot-on. When planting trees and shrubs, your preparation matters
more than the price tag. Dig wide, improve the soil, check your drainage, and stake
properly. Yes, it’s tough, messy work - but it’s what separates a struggling plant from
one that flourishes for decades.
3: Ditch the weed mat.
Synthetic weed mat can be harmful to plant and soil health over time. It adds
unnecessary cost, introduces plastic into the environment, and is difficult to install.
For sloped or challenging sites, choose biodegradable wool alternatives like the
locally made Terra Lana DagMat, but for most plantings, we recommend a 100mm
layer of organic mulch. See our mates at Intelligro just round the corner.
4: Species selection is key.
Just because you saw that lush banana tree on Pinterest, doesn’t mean it’s going
to love the Selwyn climate! Talk to our expert team to ensure plants are suitable for
your site before you put them in the ground.
5: Don’t let grass grow right up to your new plants.
Keep grass at least 50cm away from newly planted trees and shrubs if you can.
Grass competes aggressively for water and nutrients, often beating out young plants
still establishing roots.
A clear, mulched area eliminates the competition and ensures your watering
actually reaches the plant. It’s a simple change with massive impact, and it works for
established trees that aren’t thriving too.
A spa retreat at home
There are few experiences more
relaxing than sitting in your own spa
pool, with a beverage of choice, and
staring up at the stars on a still, clear,
Canterbury night.
Stress relief, eased tension from sore
muscles and the aches and pains of
busy lives, quality time with loved ones
and fun with the children, or just a few
moments of quiet time alone. These and
more are the benefits hot tub owners
acknowledge.
New technologies and innovations in
design have made a wide variety of spa
pools available to suit every home and
landscape, and most budgets. Compact
two to four person pools fit into tight
corners, and much larger swim spas
allow you to exercise – swim, walk,
or jog – using powerful jets of water
to keep you moving on the spot. They
provide low impact workouts, plus all
the therapeutic benefits of the smaller
spas.
In the age of personalised everything
– smartphones, computers, cars, and
space travel – spa pools, too, can be
fully customisable. For example, you
can now buy spas with interchangeable
massage seats which you can
personalise to best suit your needs.
These days, many spas include
integrated lighting displays, fountain
and waterfall features, remote
control, and wireless and Bluetooth
technologies.
When it comes to landscaping for a
spa pool, imagination, and budget, are
the only limitations. From a simple spa
on the deck with perhaps a shade sail
to a more elaborate design integrated
into the entire yard with flat screen
television to watch, it is advisable to get
direction from an expert. Landscape
professionals ask the questions you
may not think to ask, and offer an
experienced perspective. Some people
want their spa to be part of an
entertainment area, others want
it close to the master bedroom.
Landscaping depends on how you want
to use your spa.
Keep your outdoor furniture
happy this winter
The clocks went back last Sunday, meaning autumn
has officially arrived and it’s the ideal time to start
thinking about protecting your outdoor furniture
before the colder weather really hits.
Typically, outdoor furniture is designed to be robust
and able to withstand the elements, but it can still face
a tough time when we’re hit with heavy rain, harsh
winds, and even the odd bout of snowfall, so it’s a good
idea to spend a bit of time protecting it and making
sure it’s not going to be too badly hit.
Most of us will be using our outdoor furniture a lot
less now that the colder months are here, and one
extremely simple way to keep it safe and sound is by
storing it away.
Of course, you’ll need somewhere to store it. Ideally,
you’ll want somewhere dry that you can lock, such as
shed, garage, or a conservatory, if there’s room. You
may also need to rope in a friend or relative to help
you shift heavier items.
If there isn’t a suitable storage available at your
home, then there are plenty of storage units and
facilities out there, and while they do come at an
additional cost, they could work out better value in the
long-term if it helps to prolong the life of your garden
furniture.
Before you put it into storage, make sure you
give everything a thorough clean and avoid placing
furniture right up against a wall or crowded together
as you want air to be able to flow freely to stop mould
and mildew from forming.
Wooden garden furniture can be given a fresh coat
of oil or stain, and now is also a great time to check
everything over for signs of damage or to make any
repairs: tackle any rust spots, tighten up loose screws,
and fill any cracks or holes before they get worse.
If storing it away for months really isn’t an option,
then you might want to get yourself a shade cover.
Shade covers are actually an excellent option
year-round, offering protection from the harsh
sunlight during the summer, as well as ice, rain, and
snow in the winter. When choosing a cover go for
something that is waterproof and durable, and make
sure it is a good fit, as you’ll want it to be nice and
snug. Once its in place, keep an eye on it and regularly
sweep off any build-up of ice, snow or dead leaves and
debris throughout the winter.
Alternatively, get yourself some heavy duty tarpaulin
to cover your outdoor items; look for the kind with
grommet holes so that you can securely tie it in place,
keeping your furniture protected no matter how wild
the weather gets.
On the subject of wild weather, if you are keeping
your outdoor furniture outdoors it might be a good
idea to secure it so that it doesn’t blow around during
strong winds.
