Program Note
One of my favorite pastimes during my time at Michigan State University was
walking along the Red Cedar River, just a few steps from the music buildings.
No matter the season, I found peace there—the sound of the water, the
rustling of trees, birdsong overhead, and the distant, steady toll of the
Beaumont Tower carillon became a kind of ritual for me. That place held me
together during busy or uncertain days, and I wanted to write a piece that
captured a bit of that feeling.
Red Cedar Hymn centers around the four chimes of the Beaumont Tower
bells—one for each quarter hour. I use this “bell” theme as a kind of musical
landmark, something the piece continually returns to. The second main idea
is what I call the “river” theme, which flows gently through the ensemble in
streams of eighth notes, echoing the quiet movement of the Red Cedar.
Near the end, I weave in a short quotation of MSU Shadows, our alma mater,
as a personal tribute to the musical community that helped me grow. I’m
especially grateful to the MSU band programs for their belief in this piece—
and in me. Their support made its premiere possible, and I’ll always be
thankful for that.
