Rodney is getting his life back on track
By JOHN COSGROVE
Three years ago, Rodney
Coyle’s life changed drastically.
Driving home from his job as
awater systems technician, on
the open road, aute suddenly
pulled out of an intersection. in
front of him
In the resulting crash, he
suffered aperforated bowel
and partial paralysis on his left
side, the result of alife
threatening brain bleed.
Today, he is still in recovery,
in rehab and on light duties.
‘‘Trying to find ajob when you
still have ongoing rehab is very
challenging, as it's certainly
challenging times out there for
everyone,’’ he says.
So rather than sitting at home
in Kaiapoi, doing nothing, the
former BMX and mountain bike
enthusiast decided to turn his
passion into abusiness —
bicycle maintenance and
repair.
‘‘My left side is asituation of
use it or lose it, so starting this
journey means light
mechanical work is the perfect
movementfor keeping my left
side going.
‘‘I can monitor myself and
rest when required.’’
Being able to turn his lifelong
passion into abusiness, and
working from home while still
being able to monitor his rehab,
is the best of both worlds as far
as he's concerned.
‘‘I do get tired, and this way I
can watch out for the signs and
remedy it,’’ he says.
Back on Track Canterbury,
which opened four months ago,
offers bicycle servicing and
repairs from Rod’s garage.
‘‘It keeps me working, keeps
me thinking and moving ahead.
‘‘I have always enjoyed
working with bikes, as over the
years being aqualified
technician, I’ve helped many
riders and adventure racers
with their machines.’’
‘HereI’m working onfixing
bikes and also conductingoneonone
training forthose riders
wanting to learnhow to
maintain their bikes.’’
He says thereare many young
ridersheknows of, who are
keen onlearning how to keep
their bikes going in top
condition.
‘It’s sad to say that bike
mechanicsare slowly becoming
adying profession, despite the
increased awarenessofcycling
due to the current fuel crisis.
‘‘I am ideally positioned to do
that oneonone training, as due
to my ongoing rehab, Ican be
selectiveabout howmuch work
Itake oneach day, based on my
health, and howIam
improving.
‘‘It’s been along road. Ispent
ayear applying for jobs but got
nothing. Basically, your life’s
onhold while your body
recovers.
‘‘But Ididn’t want to just sit
around and do nothing.’’
Rod says creating Back on
Track Canterburyishis way of
moving forward, of engaging
with the worldand ‘‘creating a
platform for me to help others,
especially young people, which
is something Iwant to do more
ofinthe future’’.
‘‘They want to learnskills
that will get them work, and this
is what Ican teach them while
they help me recover.’’
Working ahead ... Rodney
Coyle’s making the most of life,
developing his passion for fixing
bicycles into agrowing business.
It was hailed as a ‘onestop shop ’ to
make it quicker and easier to build
major projects when it pa sed into law
last December.
But none of the five North Canterbury
projects included in the Government’s
Fasttrack A provals Act have
progre sed beyond being ‘listed ’
projects in the fasttrack proce s.
They were among 149 projects listed
in the legislation.
In astatement released last w ek,
Infrastructure MinisterChris Bishop
and RegionalDevelopment Minister
Shane Jones said around 50 of the 149
projects had lodged substantive
a plications with the Environmental
Protection Authority (EPA), since the
a provals regime was established in
February.
Of those, none have b en a proved so
far, with the first eight expected to be
signed o f by the end of the year.
Proposed housing developments at
Ōhoka, W odend and west Rangiora
were listed in the legislation, along with
the W odend Bypa s and the Amuri
I rigation Company Ltd’s Balmoral
water storage facility and fish scr en.
An EPA spokesperson has confirmed
none of the five North Canterbury
projects have lodged substantivefasttrack
a plications.
Developers of alistedproject can
a ply to the EPA where an ‘expert
panel’ wi l a se s theprojectand
consult with ‘directly a fected groups ’.
Panel convenors determine the extent
of the consultation, meaning the is no
guarant elocal communities wi l have a
say.
Thereisnotimeframe for alisted
projec tolodge ana plication, the
spokesperson said.
When the project list was a nounced
in October last year, Mr Bishop pointed
the finger at councils for creating the
housing crisis.
‘Speaking in general terms, councils
have contributedtoour housing crisis
by being overly picky about where
houses can be built, ’ he said a the time.
The W odend and west Rangiora
developments have since b en included
in thenew WaimakaririDistrict Plan
adopted last month, meaningthey may
not n ed to be fasttracked.
Amuri I rigation Company
chairperson DavidCroft said the
company anticipated aresource consent
would be grantedbyEnvironment
Canterbury (ECan) in the next few
months, after it was lodged in 2023.
‘It l oks like the normalconsenting
proce s wi l be faster. In some waysit
would be the ideal situation because
everybody hashad the chancetohave
their say in asystem they are familiar
with. ’
A$20m loan from the Government’s
Regional Infrastructure Fund was
a nounced earlier this month for the
Balmoral water storageproject.
The proposed Ōhoka development
was rejected from the District Plan,
after aprivate plan change requestwas
rejected by an independent
commi sioner in November 2023.
It is sti l subjec to an Environment
Courta peal.
An Environment Courtspokesperson
said the a pe lant, Carter Group, has
b en directed to advise the court by
August 2 ‘how or whether it intends to
proc ed ’.
Waimakariri District Council
development pla ning manager Ma t
Bacon said underthe new District Plan,
the site of the proposed Ohoka
development is zoned rura lifestyle.
It mean the farmland could be subdivided
into 4ha lots, but not into an
850home development as proposed.
NC residents unhappy at postal
service cuts in their towns
By DAVIDHILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
North Canterbury residents have vented
their frustration at adecision to remove
postal services in their towns.
New Zealand Post staffbriefed the
Waimakariri District Council last month
on plans to end postal services at the
Waikuku Beach, Pegasus and Woodend
in May.
They would be replaced by anew
service in Ravenswood, north Woodend,
which NZ Postplans to open this month.
Waikuku Beach resident Janine
Rogers said residents relied on the post
office boxes provided at the general
store, due to alack of residential mail
delivery.
‘‘Having to drive to collect mail feels
counterintuitive to the purpose of amail
service.
‘‘Residents should have the option to
be included in ahome delivery service if
the boxes are to be moved.’’
Waimakariri district councillor Shona
Powell said she was concerned for
people with mobility issues in getting to
Ravenswood, because of limited public
transportinWaikuku Beach.
Pegasus residents have safety
concerns crossing State Highway 1when
walking or cycling, and the bus only goes
every hour.
Cr Powell said Pegasus had a
population of around 4500, with a
growing number of elderly and those
with mobility issues.
She has been advocated for apost box
in Pegasus, where people can post mail
outside of business hours.
‘‘People can’t just drop down and post
acard to adear friend.’’
Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon said
he was pleased to hear NZ Post was
planning to create anew Ravenswood
store.
But he was concerned at the
withdrawal of services from small, semirural
communities such as Waikuku
Beach.
‘‘I have lived in Waikuku and know the
Post services ... New Zealand Post is proposing to close postal services in Waikuku Beach,
Pegasus and Woodend, while opening anew agency in Ravenswood.
area well. Ihave extended an invitation
to NZ Post to visit the area with me to
better understand the situation on the
ground.
‘‘I also formally requested they
reconsider their proposal forthis
community,and to look at what
additional services could be provided at
Pegasus such as areceiving post box.’’
NZ Post general manager consumer
Sarah Sandoval said NZ Post took ‘‘a
careful, evidencebased approach’’
before deciding to close the Woodend
Beach, Pegasus and Waikuku Beach
agencies.
‘‘We took adetailed look at drive time
data and engaged with our retail
partners to gain local insights to help
understand where changes made sense,
including visiting the local area as part
of this review process.’’
She said changes will begin from May,
with the PO boxes being relocated from
Waikuku Beach to the new Ravenswood
store.
‘‘We recognise that access to mail
She confirmed anew agency will open
in Ravenswood this month.
‘‘Ravenswood was chosen because it
has strong and growing foot traffic,
making it apractical and convenient
RAPID numbers now part of consent process
Pinpointing alocation at anew rural
dwelling or business in the Hurunui
District is now seamless.
Rural Address Property Identification
(RAPID) number plates are now issued as
part of the building consent process for all
new rural dwellings and businesses in the
Hurunui District.
Hurunui District Council’s RAPID
Numbering and Vehicle Crossing Officer
Liz Atkins says RAPIDnumber plates are
essential for emergency services, and
anyone wanting to locate arural address,
especially when it’s dark or in poor
visibility.
‘‘Any rural dwelling, new or old, really
does need to have aRAPID number plate,’’
she said.
Until recently, the RAPID number plate
had not been part of the building consent
process.
Ms Atkins said that since council
launched itsawareness campaign in 2023,
uptake has steadily increased acrossthe
district.
‘‘Due to changes to the building consent
process,we’re ensuring new properties
are also covered as well as existing
dwellings.’’
Since 2025 more than 1500 plates have
been bought, in addition to those issued
since the campaign began in 2023. Ms
Atkins says properties with multiple
dwellings with no RAPID number, or lack
clear directional signage, can create real
challenges for emergency services.
Keep Rangiora Beautiful group disbands
By SHELLEY TOPP
NEWS
North Canterbury News, April 9, 2026
3
Agroup formed 35 yearsago to beautify
Rangiora can no longer continue doing
volunteer work, and has disbanded,
leaving an impressive environmental
legacy for the town.
Keep Rangiora Beautiful was
established in 1989 after the
Waimakariri District Council was
approached by Keep New Zealand
Beautiful (KNZB) to establisha
Rangiora branch. Trevor Inch,
Rangiora’smayor at that time, invited
members of potential interestgroups to
attend ameeting with aKNZB
representative and Keep Rangiora
Beautiful was established soon
afterwards.
The group’s first big project was to
enhance the informal picnic area next
to the AshleyRakauri Riverbridge in
Rangiora. The plantings provided shade
and wind protection for the area which
quickly became apopular picnic site
and remains so today.
There have been many beautification
projects since then including the Adopt
AHighway Trial in 1994, Dudley Park in
1995, BNZ car park in 1996, Kaiapoi
Lakes and Taggart’s Shingle Pit in 1997,
Good Street Reserve in 1998, Rangiora
Hospital in 2000, Binn Inn and
Warehouse Rangiora in 2002, Mike Kean
Walkway in 2008, Rangiora High School
fence line and East Belt frontage in 2009
and Rangiora Health Hub in 2015, to
name afew.
The group also recognised two longserving
life members, Rangiora’s Ron
and Barbara Mackie in 2022 by planting
arow of totaras for them along the
Milton Avenue footpath, next to the
North Canterbury Riding For The
Disabled property.
Ron and Barbara contributed more
than 31 years volunteering for KRB and
estimate during that time they helped
KRB members plant more than 14,000
trees and shrubs in the Rangiora
district, which is an impressive legacy
for them and the KRB group.
KRB secretary Adrienne McGown
said other projects have included
establishing the garden by the Westpac
Bank in 2022, the streetsidegarden at
the end of Edward Street, near Goodall
Lane (with the assistance of the
RangioraHigh School Leos students),
and planting fastigate oaks and
ribbonwoods in the Rickton Reserve
towards Coldstream Road.
In 2021, KRB started work in the
Anglican cemetery on Ashley Street.
‘‘We cleared moss and lichen from the
headstones,sorelatives could find the
graves of their forebears, then followed
up with weeding the graves and edges
and mowing between the graves where
the rideon mower man couldn't go and
since June2025, we have been assisting
with the removal of ivy, honeysuckle and
other weeds at Matawai Park on Friday
mornings.’’
KRB volunteers have also
participated in the annual Keep NZ
Beautiful Clean Up day held every
September.
‘‘But in recent years we have worked
with the AshleyRakahuri Rivercare
Group, the combined fourwheeldrive
clubs and the WDC Youth Council to
clean up sections of the Ashley
Rakahuri River banks, after the
devastating flood in 2021.
‘‘We have removed skipfulls of
rubbish, including furniture, sunbeds,
car bodies and tyres as well as
household rubbish, cans and bottles,’’
Adrienne said.
‘‘We would like to record our thanks to
the Waimakariri District Council,who
has supported us in many ways over the
last 35 years," she said.
‘‘Forty years ago, there were few trees
planted in the urban landscape, but now
Waimakariri has astrong environmental
ethos and they now do what we used to
do, planting out street corners, parks
and reserves and further afieldalong
the AshleyRakahuri River,’’ she said.
New playspace in Kaiapoi to explore
By JOHN COSGROVE
Anew inexpensive playspacethat
combines discovery with learning all
about nature, has been unveiled in
Kaiapoi.
The playground equipment at
Currie Park in Ellen Place, Kaiapoi,
needed replacing so the Greenspace
team at the Waimakariri District
Council decided to come up with a
new plan for the space, one that
offered an alternative to the usual
swings and climbing frames.
Grant Stephens, the design and
planning team leader at Greenspace,
worked with landscape architect Tori
Stableford to design anew playspace
—one that invited young people to
play in and explore the nature
around them.
‘‘We moved the play equipment
over to NormanKirk andfoundacost
effective way to create anew type of
playspace in the area usingwhat was
already there andother bits and
pieces we could findinthe
neighbourhood.’’ says Grant.
‘‘This type of inexpensive
playspace encourages children to
seek out and explore their
environment.
‘‘We have created aseries of small
spaces that challenge children to
clamberofrocks andpoles, to tip over
and look under stumps to see what’s
living there, to investigate the flowers
and fauna aroundthem for bugs and
insects anddiscover who’s living in
the bug hotel.’’
He says it caters to people of all
ages in the community andshould
become atreasured space to relaxin
anddiscover more about the world
around you.
‘‘The biodiversity team have done
awonderful job namingand
signposting everythingthat is
contained in the small space which
used to be justaswing, aslide and a
box. We even paved in the seat that
was there originally, to give access to
everybody. ‘‘It’s something that’s
different and awonderful place for a
family to relax in while their other
children kick aball aroundorplay in
the wider park area.’’
Establishing Biodiversity Trust ‘rewarding’
By SHELLEY TOPP
Waimakariri Biodiversity Trusts (WBT)
inaugural chairwoman Dr Judith Roper
Lindsay has retired from the rolewhich
began in July, 2021.
However, the Ashley ecologist will
continue working with the trustees,
community and contractors to build
relationships while her replacement,
Sandra Stewart, KaiapoiTuahiwi
Community Board member andformer
Waimakariri District Council councillor,
settles into her new role as chairwoman.
Ms Stewart has been atrustee since
August 2023.
Judith says the opportunity to become
the inaugural WBT chairwoman and see
in its establishment phase has been a
rewarding challenge.
‘‘For most of my career as an ecologist
Ilived in Ashley, but travelled into
Christchurchand around the South
Island for work.
‘‘Once Iretired in 2018 Icould focuson
biodiversity values of Waimakariri
District in avoluntary capacity,'' she says.
Judith was on the Waimakariri Water
Zone Committee (WWZC) for nine years,
and in 202021 chaired the WWZCs
Biodiversity Working Group which set up
the trust.
It was establishedtoimprove
environmental awareness and help
create vibrant, healthy, indigenous
ecosystems by providing free
information, education and resources to
enable the community to protect, restore,
create and sustainably manage
indigenous biodiversity in the
Waimakariri District.
Being environmentallyaware is more
important than ever, Judith says.
‘‘We are in crisis mode for many
environmental features and systems.
grown, and urban lives have become
chairwoman of the Waimakariri Biodiversity Trust.
separated from the natural environment,
peoplehave lost touch with the impacts
and effects of their activities on it. At the
same time the demand to use natural
resources has started to outstrip the
ability for the environment to renew
them,'' she says.
‘‘This has ledtodamage to natural
systems such as waterways and soils,
underminingthe health of the plants and
animalsdepending on them and
affectingcommunities valuing them
intrinsically, and enjoying them for
recreation andwellbeing.
‘‘It is important now that those people
who do see and understand these
adverse effects onthe environment take
allthe positive steps they can, no matter
how small, to minimise their impacts.
This way they set examples for others to
see,’’ she says.
Judith also believes starting that
journey in our local surroundings is
crucial.
‘‘Locally, land and water are important
for our diverse biodiversity, for cultural
values, for ahealthy economy, and for
our sense of place and wellbeing.
‘‘It is important for us all to do what we
can to sustain them.''
Judiths decision to retire as WBT
chairwoman was ``essentially for health
reasons'', as she can no longer make site
visits.
However, she also recognises that the
trust is ``moving fromits establishment
phase'' into consolidating its position as
``the voice of indigenous biodiversity''in
Waimakariri. For this ``it will be great to
have new energy, experience and
perspectives'' from new trustees who
joined the WBT last month, anew coordinator/field
officer and anew
chairwoman.
Judith began her 49year career in
ecology in Scotland assessing upland
habitats and conservation values in
urban and rural, derelict land during
1977 after graduating from Durham
University in England with aPhD
studying the plant communities of the
Shetland Isles.
Thework nurtured her interest in
protection and enhancement of
biodiversity alongside development and
community activities.
She came to New Zealand in 1981 and
became thefirst landscape ecologist in
the Ministry of Works and Development
(MWD) working alongside engineers,
landscape architects and planners.
Since then she has had abusy career
working on many environmental
projects.
In 2024 her work as an environmental
champion was recognised with an
individual award at the Waimakariri
Environmental Awards.
Judith says it is difficult to choose her
favourite environmental space in
Waimakariri, but the AshleyRakahuri
River catchment area is one of them,
because of its diversity of habitats and
species.
‘‘There are native forests, shrub lands
and wetlands in theLees Valley, foothills
and (Ashley) Gorge.
‘‘The rare braided river system across
the plains, fed by dozens of springs and
with its unique bird populations, and Te
Aka Aka, the AshleyRakahuri Estuary,
where you find dunes and coastal
wetlands is overlain by its cultural value,
taonga, making it avaluable asset to our
district.’’
Changingofthe guard at Culverden
ByDAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Tania McDonald hopes she can inspire
more women to step up into leadership
roles.
Ms McDonald became the first
woman chief fire officer of the
Culverden Volunteer Fire Brigade last
month, replacing Craig Ritchie, who
stepped down after 11 years in the role.
‘‘It gives something for women to
think about going for. Hopefully it will
encourage others to step up.
‘‘I’m quite excited about taking over
from avery good chief and I’ve got a
good brigade behind me,’’ shesaid.
Culverden has asmall brigade, with
16 volunteers, including four women.
‘‘We are asmall brigade, so we are
always happy for people to come and
have alook.
‘‘It’s not as scary as people think.’’
Ms McDonald works for Farmlands
in Culverden and runs her own
business.
She said Farmlands had been
supportive of her firefighting role, in
allowingher to ‘‘drop tools and go’’.
She has previously served as the
brigade’s training officer and as a
station officer for 14 years.
Hurunui Mayor Marie Black said Mr
Ritchie has given valuable service to
the Culverden community.
‘‘He’s just one of those people in the
community who put their hand up and
get stuff done.’’
Mr Ritchie first moved to Culverden
as asharemilker in 1994, before
joining the brigade in 2000.
He later took over the 118hafarm in
2007, which is now leased to his
daughter and soninlaw.
He became deputy chief in 2008,
before stepping up as the chief 11 years
Jenny chose work that asks everything
of her.
As aMāori arts and crafts tutor at an urban
creative space for mental health support, her
days are spent face-to-face with people who
need patienceand calm.
But it also means standing on concrete
floors, demonstrating techniques, and most
importantly beingpresent.
It’s thekindofjob youdobecause it matters,
not because it’seasy.
Butit’shardtobepresent when your knees
won’tlet you forget they exist.
Her knees just wouldn’t stop. All day. All
night.Likeastrandthatwouldn’t stay woven,
always pulling loose, always pulling ather
patience.
“You’re just kind of like,whenisthisgoing
to stop?” Jenny recalls. “But itdoesn’t. Itjust
kept on going.”
Both knees had been making themselves
more disruptive asthe years went on. First,
standing becamedifficult. Then thecoldstarted
creepingupthrough theconcrete floor.Before
long, thenightshad become thereal problem.
Sleep hadturnedintoaguessing game.Two
hourswas normal. Threeifshe waslucky.Then
she’d lie there, wide awake, knees buzzing,
knowing she had tobe on her feet again in a
few hours.
“It would make me so grumpy,” Jenny
admits. “When you’re in constant discomfort
and you haven’t slept, you’re not always nice
to be around. Youtell people todothings,
instead of asking them.”
For someone whose job is guiding others
withpatienceand care, that wasthe real cost.
She’d tried what was available. Nothing
made areal difference. Jenny was starting to
acceptthatthiswas just howthings were going
to be.
ago.
Thechief fire officer role has lead to
Mr Ritchie providingservice to the
wider community, with the brigade
hosting Anzac Day services for several
years.
Mr Ritchie was checking smoke
alarms in the area eight years ago
when herealised local farmers were at
risk, as it was difficult to accurately
locate rural properties.
There were issues with incorrect
numbering, with multiple houses on
the same property using the same
Rural Address Property Identification
(rapid) number andthe numbers not
being placed at the entrance gate.
He collaborated with the Hurunui
“She hadbeen usingthiscream forher back
Jenny wasn’t convinced.But shetrusted her
The natural cream wascalled Koru FXand
Jenny remembers the night she applied the
cream for the first time. What happened next,
she almost didn’t trust.
Shewoke up hourslater.Not twohours. Not
three. She lay there, waiting for her knees to
wake upand make themselves known. But
theywerequieter.Not gone,but quieter.
“I canget four hoursofsleep now,”she says.
“Sometimes five. Forme, that’s amazing.”
Four hours doesn’t sound like much. But
to make it easier for emergency
services to find properties.
Mr Ritchie is alsopresidentofthe
Glenmark Tennis Club andserves on
the Culverden CommunityCommittee.
The community committee spent
several years fundraising for awar
memorial for the town,unveiling asixmetre
high Corten steel lasercut
soldier on Anzac Day last year.
The project was backed by the
Hurunui District Council.
Mr Ritchie is not completely lost to
the brigade, as he will stay on to
mentor other volunteers.
‘‘I am extremely proud of what the
brigade has achieved over the years
andgrateful for all the support the
community has always shown us.’’
LDR is local body journalism cofunded
by RNZ andNZOnAir.
when you’ve been waking every two, four
feels like luxury.
The grumpiness started to lift. And Jenny
noticed somethinghad shiftedinhow shewas
around people.
“I’m alot nicer to be around,” she says. “I
askpeopletodothingsinstead of tellingthem.
The little things matter when you’re face-tofacewithpeopleall
day.”
“Koru FXhas been astop button for me,”
Jenny says. “That’s what I call it. Astop
button.”
Herknees still pullfor attentionattimes, but
she’slearnednow to sleepthrough.
“I can sleep. Ican work. I’m nicer to the
peoplearound me.”
“For me,that’severything.”
under the spotlight
Ihopeeveryonehad achance to enjoy
the Easter break, spend time with
family and friends, and perhaps indulge
in afew well earned treats along the
way.
I’m pleased that apublic meeting has
been organised by Te Whatu Ora for
7pm on April 28 at the Oxford Working
Men’s Club, which Ihave agreed to
chair.
This will give residents the
opportunity to hear directly about the
future of healthcare services in Oxford,
including the hospital, and to ask
questionsabout what lies ahead.
Last week Ialso had the opportunity
to catch up with American TikTok
creator JMango, who is on amission to
visit every town in New Zealand.
It was great to share with him what
makes our district such aspecial place.
We stopped in Rangiora for agelato
and achat, and Ipointed himtowards a
few of my favourite local spots before he
continued on to explore Woodend,
Pegasus and Kaiapoi.
It’s always fantastic to see people
showcasing our communities to awider
audience.
Iwas particularly impressed by the
way he isusing his platform to support
young people through mental health
challenges andtohighlight issues that
matter.
Iwas also joined by Councillor Shona
Powell to view progress on the North
Canterbury Urgent Care and extended
hours medical centre last week.
It’s really taking shape, with the roof
now on and interior work underway.
The project remains on track and on
budget, and it’s exciting to see this
importantfacility coming closer to
completion.
Finally, our Annual Plan is now out
forconsultation.
We’ve taken aprudent approach to
thisyear’s budget, and there will be
several opportunities to engage,
including adropin session at the
Oxford A&P Show on Saturday, April 11.
Iencourage everyone to take the time to
have their say —your feedbackplays an
Stadium amilestone
As aborn and bred Crusaders fan, Iwas
very excited to attend the official
opening of the One New Zealand
stadium alongside the Prime Minister
and several of my Greater Christchurch
colleagues.
As Cantabrians we all know how long
the journey has been to rebuild the city
since the earthquakes 15 yearsago and
the opening of the stadium marks areal
milestone in its transformation.
Ispent Saturday morning with
Clarkville residents from Baynons and
Heywards Roads to hear their concerns
about recent council decisions to allow
high volume gravel truck haulage
through their community.
It is concerning to hear of the lack of
communication and consultation with
residents on such an importantissue to
them, especially when there is aviable
alternative route of an established
gravel haul road along the river.
Iamhearing from many constituents
that the costofliving crisis, coupled
with the conflict in the Middle East
leading to higher fuel prices, is creating
increased stress and pressure on
household budgets.
That’s why, from this month, more
than amillion New Zealanders will see
extra support in their pockets.
Superannuitants will see increased
payments –for example, NZ
Superannuation for amarried couple
who both qualify willlift more than $50
to $1708 afortnight. Lowtomiddleincome
working parents get an extra $50
aweek, for up to ayear, from the inwork
tax credit –helping 143,000 families,
with 14,000 more now eligible.
Working for Families changes give
about $14 extra afortnight, on average,
to 142,000 families. The family tax credit,
benefits and student allowances will
also rise on April 1.
Iloved talking with UC Political
Science students in Kaiapoi about the
roles of electorate MPs and Ministers.
This is the seventh year I've been
involved in these sessions and it's always
great to answer their questions and
engage in insightful debate with
potentiallyafuture generation of
politicians and political pundits.
Lastly, it was areal honour to speak at
the Kaiapoi Fire Station's special event
to celebrate the milestone Gold Star
achievement of 25 years’ service for
Chief Fire Officer Matt McPhee and
Station Officer Tim Reynolds.
As local MP Iamincredibly grateful to
Matt and Tim for their dedication to our
communities, and also to their families
for allowing them to drop everything and
run every time the siren sounds.
Well done Matt and Tim, what atruly
fantastic effort!
Progressontarget at newhealth-care centre
Local Democracy Reporter
Waimakariri’s mayor says he is
‘‘thrilled’’ at the progress of anew afterhours
medical centre in Rangiora.
The new Rangiora Medical facility will
have doctors, nurses and afull radiology
service on site so patients don't have to
travel all the way to Christchurch for
broken bones or urgent care.
It is consented to operate from 8am to
10pm, seven days aweek, with plans to
increasethe hours if there is demand.
Dan Gordon checked the progress of
the site, next to the Rangiora Health Hub
in Ashley Street, recently.
The council entered into apartnership
with the South Link Education Trust last
year, with the council agreeingtoloan
fund the project.
‘‘It’s amazing. Iamthrilled to see it
comingalong. It is exactly what our
community has been waiting for, for a
very long time,’’ Mr Gordon said.
‘‘We just want to see good health
provision in ourcommunity and we
couldn’t do it without you,’’ he said to
representativesofSouth Link Health.
South Link Health chief executive
Karl Andrews said the support from the
council had been ‘‘amazing’’.
The build is on track to be completed
in November, with the new facility
expected to open in January.
The new facility will bring the Victoria
Street and Good Street medical practices
together on the one site and offer urgent
and after hours care.
Mr Andrews said anew business
manager has been appointed and will
start work at the end ofthe month.
Work will begin soontorecruit
specialist urgent care and after hours
medical teams.
‘‘We’ve had experience in Auckland of
setting up an urgent care team, so we
know what we want,’’ Mr Andrews said.
‘‘We are working out the patient needs
in this area and talking with Health NZ to
see what it is able to fund, before
determining howmany people we will
need.’’
The main 700 square metre building
will have 10 consulting rooms, including
seven for doctors and three for nurses.
There will be three triage bays using
the ‘‘race track design to move people
around quickly’’, with ambulances out
back, Feldspar director David Booth
said.
Feldspar is managing the project.
The facility will have apharmacy and
an attached 500 square metre building
which will be leased to Pacific Radiology
from July, to complete thebuild and fit
out.
Afull radiology service will be offered,
including CT scans, MRI, ultra sound and
xray.
It means the new facility will be able to
treat broken bones, including xray and
putting on and removing plaster casts.
‘‘Instead of going all the way into
Christchurch, it can be done here for the
less complicated cases,’’ South Link
Education Trust chairperson Professor
Murray Tilyard said.
The facility will also be equipped with
agenerator plug so it can operate as a
Civil Defence emergency centre, if
required.
It includes apublishing contractwith
the story arrived almost fully formed
about adecade ago.
‘‘But Ialways felt it was missing
something.
‘‘Collaborating with Regan has meant
the story has evolved into amuch richer
offering, with te reo Māori and English
both contributing to the kōrero,rather
than one being adirect translationofthe
other.’’
For Wilson, the award also carries
strong personal significance.
‘‘Joy Cowley was one of the first
authors Iremember reading
independently, curled up in the reading
School rugby changes
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Acombined North Canterburyfirst 15
rugby team has been mooted, as South
Island all boys’ schools establish their
own competition.
Rangiora High School has pulled out
of the Crusaders region’s Miles Toyota
First 15 Premiership this season, after
the boys’ schools announced last year
they were proposing to form a
breakaway competition.
Principal Bruce Kearney spoke out
against the proposal and said the
school’s move down to the championship
grade is an opportunity to workwith
other North Canterbury schools.
‘‘I don’t think playing in thatgrade is
in the best interests for our boys and it’s
not just because of the size and ability of
the players, but also the attitude.
‘‘There’s no reason why we couldn’t
form aNorth Canterbury team to play in
the championship against other coed
schools.’’
Several North Canterburyplayers
have gone on to play professional rugby,
including former Rangiora student, and
All Black Fletcher Newell.
‘‘For many, playing in their first team
at school is the greatest opportunity in
sport they will ever have because ofthe
pressures of work and other pressures in
their lives,’’ Mr Kearney said.
The school’s board of trustees
presiding member Simon Green said
promotingacompetition for boys’
schools could have long term
implications.
‘‘As acoed school, we’re concerned
that restricting toplevel rugby to boys’
schools limits inclusivity and risks
drawing talented players away from the
school communities where many first
developed their love of the game.’’
Smaller area schools do not have
9
numbers to field rugby teams at
secondary school level, with students
playing forlocal clubs.
‘‘We are always open to discussion
around supporting young players to have
further opportunities,’’ Oxford Area
School acting principal Lesley Inch said.
RangioraNew Life School principal
Stephen Walters said his students
already combined with other schools for
sports and cultural activities, including
Polyfestand CASAFest (Canterbury area
schools).
Kaiapoi High School has no first 15
rugby tradition, but the school roll has
grown significantly in the last 15 years.
‘‘There’s astrong desire for rugby at
Kaiapoi,’’ principal Jason Reid said.
‘‘Everyyear we have some family
members who say ‘let’s make it happen’,
but it’s achallenge getting the
collaboration with the clubs.’’
Kaiapoi and Rangiora high schools
have produced acombined girls first 15
and Mr Reid would be keen to discuss
something similar for the boys.
In May last year, South Island boys
schools announced aproposal to set up a
competition comprising boys schools
across the Crusaders’ and Highlanders’
regions.
Around 45 principals from Canterbury
and West Coast coeducational
secondary schools came together to
speak out against the move.
Schools behind the initiative said they
aimed to ‘‘foster connection, belonging
and pride among our young men’’.
New Zealand Rugby later stepped in
to mediate, with the boys schools opting
to continue playing in the Crusaders
first15premiership.
They will also play in acrossover
South Island competition against teams
from the Highlanders region.
Radiographerretires after lifetime career
By JOHN COSGROVE
This month, Chris Lamb retires aftera
lifetime career as aradiographer.
She has spent the last 26 years working
at North Canterbury XRay, and before
that, she trained and worked as a
radiographer at Christchurch Hospital.
She learned how to operate the
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
scanner there and was aclinical Tutor in
the hospital’s Radiology Department.
However, Radiography wasn’t Chris’s
first choice for acareer.
After leaving Papanui High School,
Chris had originally intended to study for
an agricultural degree at Lincoln College
or serve in the Navy as her father had.
Sadly, in both cases, she was advised
that the roles were not suitable for women.
‘‘It’s what it was like in the early ’70s,
women’s roles were not as accessible as
they are now, so one day Iamvisiting the
hospital, and Isaw all the women there
and thought Icould do this. Iwanted to
work there, and somehow Iended up
talking to themabout working in the
radiography department.
‘‘Theysaid Iwas too young, and to come
back in ayear, which Idid.’’
She filled in her gap year working first
as aland girl on apropertyinHynds,
which she says was not anice experience,
and thenatMtLowry Station.
‘‘I had afantastic time there. Ilearned to
break in ponies and how to drive tractors
and trucks there.’’
She remembers that one day, the Lord
Chief Justice of England, Lord Widgery,
arrived at the station driving in abig Rolls
Royce with alarge entourage, to
undertake some hunting and fishing there.
Chris began her radiography training in
1972, studying for two years at Princess
Margaret Hospital.
It was mostly onthejobtraining with set
lecture times where she and several
others had to catch the interhospital
transportvan between PMH and
Christchurch Public to attend.
She says it was easy in those days in the
XRay department, as while you learned
your trade, you also learned how to occupy
the time between assignments.
‘‘Many people knitted while others
sewed sheets and other things in the main
XRay rooms. We weren’t as busy as they
are today, and there was alot of
downtime.’’
The work she undertook was very
skilled. She had to shoot XRay film in
cassettes, make all the preparations and
adjustments to the bulky machines to
guarantee success, then carefully but
quickly process the film for the doctors to
review.
‘‘Ittook awhile to process, so Itook up
knitting, waiting for it all to happen. You
never really knew if it had been exposed
properly. In the operating theatres, you
had to work quickly, butyou couldn’t
always see what youwere doing due to the
sheetscovering patients and the sterile
nature of the theatre, so it was alwaysa
very stressful time. You would be praying
the film turned out as you were worried
you got everything the surgeon wanted to
see.’’
Then therewere the processing
chemicals, which sadly poisoned Chris,
forcing her to spendabitoftime on sick
leave.
When the Christchurch Hospital
installed aMagnetic Resonance Imaging
(MRI) scanner that revolutionised the
field of medical imaging, Chris had to
study physics for six months to enable her
to work on it.
It was the first one in the South Island,
and the move to digital imaging marked a
major shift in the role of radiographers.
She says they were always very careful
about doses of radiation. When they went
digital, they used alot less radiation to
make an image.
‘‘There were many smarter ways to
intensifythe image to show more for the
doctors.’’
She says the 26 years spent in North
Canterbury XRay in Rangiora have been
aprivilege, and she will miss the
interactions with patients and the ‘‘hugs’’.
‘‘I have enjoyed working with the staff
here, and the challenge of working as a
team, making it all happen.’’
The AshleyRakahuri Gorge Holiday
JeanPierre Derveaux, who owns the
says the idea for an information centre
‘‘took root within the Ashley Gorge
Advisory Group (AGAG) about 18 months
ago''.
``The committee recognisedthathaving
adedicated information centre would be
invaluable for visitors,’’ he says.
‘‘A place to share the rich history of the
provide practical tips on local attractions
and activities.’’
Abuilding that would blend
‘‘seamlessly’’ into the existing landscape,
was wanted.
The highly acclaimed New Zealand String
Quartet (NZSQ) will perform in Rangiora’s
Chamber Gallery as part of anationwide
Storytellers tour.
The series of concerts are designed to
broaden New Zealanders' understanding of
chamber and classicalmusic and break
down barriers to entry, the NZSQ Trust
General Manager, Aislinn Ryan, says
The Rangiora concert Origins will
showcase aprogramme of classical
masterpieces and contemporary New
Zealand works.
‘‘It will explore the way composerstell
stories through music and will reflect arich
crosssection of our society and celebrate
the art of storytelling through music,’’ she
says.
‘‘We are inviting everyone, including
those who have never been to achamber
evening of creativity, connectionand
unforgettable musical storytelling.
‘‘You don’t need any musicalbackground
to enjoy it, just curiosity and awillingness
The Rangiora concert will also be the
South Island premiere of an ‘‘incredibly
special’’ piece of music, Universal Veil,
written for the NZSQ by ayoung New
was born in Auckland. but now livesin
Melbourne.
Universal Veil takes the listenerona
‘‘And thanks to the collective efforts of
our community, that vision has now
become areality.’’ The project was lead
and managed by AGAG chairman Robert
Judson and JeanPierre, who is also a
member of the group.
TheRobson family, who were pivotal in
making the shelter areality, JeanPierre
says.
‘‘Aftertheir key role in the specialneeds
especially young builder Jack Robson, who
led theconstruction (of the information
mushroom growth, spores, scattered
returning to mycelium, the intricateweb of
underground networks. The presence of
fungi gently drapes over the earth like a
universal veil, blurring the lines of
individual and collective,’’ Mika says.
The Rangiora concert will be performed
by the NZSQ musicians, violinist Peter
Clark and violist Gillian Ansell, who has
been with the ensemble since its beginning
in 1987, with two special guests, violinist
‘‘It is incredibly exciting to have these
You can be the fittest person in New
Zealand, but if you don’t look after your
team mates, you won’t succeed.
That’s why adventure racing is an
awesome team sport, according to The
Dog Show, ateam of Hurunui locals who
will be lining up this weekend with more
than 800 fellow adventure racing
enthusiasts representing 275 teams, at
the Kaikoura Adventure Race (KAR).
This year KAR, which started in 2019, is
offering three, six, 12 and 24 hour
category options, in teams of two, three or
four, mixed, male orfemale teams, a
range ofages from young tots.
Last year there was a48hour option
which race organisers said may feature
again due to its popularity.
What started off as alocal fundraiser
for Kaikoura High School and Kaikoura
community groups is now home of the
South Island Secondary School
Adventure Racing Championships.
The DogShow will be represented by
Craig Ginders (captain), Ben O’Carroll
(navigator), Simon Frances and Sarah
ONeill, who will compete in the 24 hour
race.
Between them they have competed in
more than adozen KARs, over anumber
of distances.
‘‘You can get some pretty dire
moments, so the people you’re with is
everything. One of my favourite parts is
helping each other out. You can all be at
your wits end at some point,’’ said
O’Carroll.
This event has become afirm fixture
for the adventure racing community,
where teams will mountain bike, paddle
and packraft, traversing Kaikoura’s
grand terrain. All with the aid of a
compass, hitting anumber of compulsory
geographical checkpoints.
For The Dog Show, the pull factor for
KAR is the chance to get off farm, get into
the hills with mates and challenge
themselves.
‘‘For me with adventure racing, its the
navigation that Ilove because its quite
challenging,’’ said O’Carroll, asheep
scanner and shearer from Amberley.
‘‘Dad was always into showing us maps
when we were kids, pointing out hills and
mountains. It was ingrained from the
start and its good to put some of that skill
to use.’’
Theteam agrees the landscape around
the Kaikoura area is pretty hard to beat
—mountains, farmland, ocean and
rivers.
When its mid race, they are in the thick
of this landscape with very little or no
sleep and down to the wire —good banter
and abit of humour is everything.
Ginders and O’Neill, dairy farmers
from Medbury and Culverden
respectively, love agood excuse to get off
the farm from time to time.
‘‘The biggest highlight is the people you
are out there with, the banter and the
team work, it all makes it worthwhile,’’
said Ginders.
‘‘Its all about doing something fun as a
team,’’ said ONeill.
Teams entered for the Secondary
School Championships make up half the
entries for this years event, the category
showing strong growth.
Race directors Tim Farrant and Tane
Cambridge are excited about this years
course. ‘‘Without giving too much away,
its afantastically wild and remote area
on the doorstep of Kaikoura,’’ Farrant
said. They say without the support of all
the local businesses, volunteers,
community groups and landowners, the
race would not happen.
Flood protectionwork
By DAVID HILL,
Local DemocracyReporter
Canterbury’s regional council is keen to
hear from residents as it looks to
strengthen flood protection on the
Ashley Rakahuri River.
Environment Canterbury is in the
early stages of planning to strengthen
flood resilience along a22km stretch of
the river upstream from Rangiora.
The council’s chief river engineer
Shaun McCracken said the existing
stopbank and flood protection
infrastructure protects the community
from aonein100 year event.
He said the proposed works is based
on modelling for aonein500 year event
and takes climate change into account.
‘‘Our modelling shows thereisarisk of
flooding at several points along the
river, so we’re exploring arange of
options to reduce that risk,’’ Mr
McCracken said.
‘‘These include strengthening the
existing stopbanks, creating secondary
stopbanks, widening the river, adjusting
riverbed levels through gravel
extraction, and changing vegetation
management within the river corridor.’’
The proposed work is upstream from
the Cones Road bridge at Rangiora,
which opened in 2015 and was designed
to be more resilient in flood events.
Asecondary stopbank was installed to
protect Rangiora around the same time.
ECan staff have been meeting with
affected landowners and the Rangiora
Airfield since February to discuss six
possible options, including replacing the
Mr McCracken said staff plan to
continue engaging with iwi, landowners,
the Waimakariri District Council and
the wider community as the council
begins workonnext year’s 2027/37 Long
TermPlan (LTP).
‘‘Once the preferred option becomes
clearer, property acquisition and
compensation will be considered.
‘‘Residents have already been
providing us with some imagery from
their properties which will help us as we
preparefor the Long Term Plan.’’
The Ashley Rakahuri flood resilience
project was signalled in the 2024/34 LTP,
with an estimated budget of $15m.
Work is not expected to begin until
2028.
It would be funded from amix of
targeted rates, regional general rates
and cofunding from Government.
Last year, the Government announced
cofunding of $1.5m to support upgrades
Career change .. DairyNZ North and Central Otago area manager James Burrows, of
Family leave dairying
By SHAWN MCAVINUE
Life is busyfor James Burrows.
‘‘She’sfull noise.’’
He left the family dairy farmin
Culverden, North Canterbury, midlast
yearand moved to Alexandra.
He started as the DairyNZ North and
CentralOtago area manager about four
months later.
Mr Burrowswent to school in
Christchurch, studied agricultural
science at Massey University, in
Palmerston North, got ajob with
DairyNZ,doing asimilarrole to his
current one in South Waikato, went on
an OE and returned to work on the
family dairy farm for nine years.
His parents and sister remain on the
family farm.
His wife Alyse Burrows,who was
raisedinCentralOtago, had started a
restaurant, The Finery, in Alexandra.
‘‘We had agodairy farming, doing
what Iwanted to do and it was time to
do what she wanted to do.’’
She was aformer school teacher and
was operating an eatery for the first
time.
‘‘She’sloving it.’’
The couple have two young children
He applied for the DairyNZ role
because he wanted to stay involved
with the dairy farming industry and
rural community.
As part of his role, he helps run field
days covering topics such as
benchmarking, farm efficiencies,
genetic gains, homegrown feed and
wearable technology.
The dairy farm systems in hisnew
patch were similar to those in North
Canterbury which made the transition
easier.
Dairy farmers and contractors in his
new patch had been telling him the
weather had been good for growing
feed this season.
However, consistent rainfall during
harvest had made it tricky to have
enough time to cut and carry silage,
baleage and hay.
Winter crops were looking good and
weed burden was low.
The conflict in the Middle East was
increasing costs including fertiliser
and fuel, which was increasing stress
for farmers and rural contractors.
‘‘Everyone is feeling the cost of the
shambles overseas.’’
School attendance
CHECK IT OUT
NEWS
North Canterbury News, April 9, 2026
19
By DAVIDHILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
‘‘Do we want kids at school if they are
unwell?’’ asks aNorth Canterbury
principal, as school attendance
continues to hit the headlines.
Rangiora High School principal
Bruce Kearney said most schools will
need to boost attendance by at least
five percent ayear to meet a
Government target of 80% of students
attending school 90% of the time
(regular attendance) by 2030.
The biggest barrier to attendance
was illness and schools were bracing
themselves for the winter ills in terms
two and three, he said.
‘‘The Government has set some
pretty aspirational targets, but what
people don’t realise is threequarters
of nonattendance is medical.
‘‘It’s not about being truant or
bunking, which is often the narrative
being presented.’’
Student attendance is set to be
debated in the lead up to the
November 7general election.
Rangiora High School board of
trustees presiding member Simon
Green, who is also Rangiora Borough
School principal, said while
attendance matters, it is ‘‘onlyone
piece of the puzzle’’.
‘‘Schools are dealing with awide
range of needs, and while attendance
is important, it’s not the most
important priority sitting in front of us
each day.
‘‘In terms of the national figures,
principalsunderstand how these
numbers can be framed.
‘‘Many of us tend to just quietly get
on with the job, focusing on teaching,
supporting our students, and working
alongside communities, rather than
getting caught up in the political
noise.’’
While term one figures are not yet
available, Mr Kearney said
attendance was similar to the 60% of
students attending 90% of the time
achieved in term one last year.
He said just over 80% of students
were at school 80% of the time. ‘‘A lot
of students do still keep up with their
school work while at home sick and
our NCEA achievements reflect that.’’
The school’s pass rates were well
above the national averages at all
three year levels in last year’s NCEA
results.
Mr Kearney said the school is
recruiting for an attendance officer to
work with families of students with
attendance of less than 70%.
Other North Canterbury schools are
working with Tuahiwi Education,
which has the school attendance
contract for the region.
Kaiapoi High School principal
Jason Reid said Tuahiwi Education
hadthe ‘‘energy and they are proactive
and Ilike it’’.
Kaiapoi High School had just 51%
of students meeting the 90% target
last year, with the highest levels of
sickness recorded in term three.
Around 73% of studentswere at
school 80% of the time.
Oxford Area School acting
principal Lesley Inch said student
attendance was continuing to
improve. ‘‘It’s only asmall shift, but it
is positive shift in the right direction.’’
Rangiora New Life School
principal Stephen Walters said
attendance continued to be afocus. ‘‘I
don’t have the stats for termone yet,
but it’s not aconcern at the moment.
‘‘We’ve done all the things the
Ministry wants us to do, butatthe end
of the day it’s about the relationship
betweenschool and families.’’
The North Canterbury News, April 9, 2026
Eco-friendlypaintoptions now available
Remember the bad old days when
once aroom was painted, it was shut
off, locked for days as the lingering
smell of the paint was too strong and
its effectsdamaging.
Remediesincluded plates of water
with vinegar, baking soda, coffee
grounds or lemon in them scattered
around the room and the windows
staying open day and night to get rid of
the nasty paint fumes.
Today, painters and decorators,are
on the lookout for ways to renovate
that are ecological and sustainable at
the same time.
Ecofriendlyoptions suchaslow
VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds)
paints, helping reduce the
environmental impact while
enhancing durability.
Low VOC paints and no added VOC
paints are the way to stop the effects
felt from excessive paint fumes in a
recently painted room, especially
when children are involved.
Staff at the Resene ColorShop in
Rangiora are happy to talk about the
benefitsofusing low VOC and no
added VOC paints from their
extensive range.
They say before 1996 paint usedto
be predominantly oil based, and there
were many harmful effects from the
solvents containedinthem, but today,
high quality indoor and outdoor paints
are mostly water based with low orno
added VOC paints available.
In the past, manufacturers used
VOCs to givethe paint alonger wet
edge, giving users more time to paint
before the paint dries.
But theresidual effects of the fumes
were seen as ahealth hazard, and the
market demanded VOCs reduced or
removed.
Indoor air quality is important and
lowering the VOCs helps improve air
quality while paint is being applied
and curing.
Not only do decorators want to
minimise the fumes while painting,
but they also want the paint odour to
disappear quickly sothey can start
using the areafaster without putting
the occupants at risk.
The paint manufacturers needed to
formulate anew way to ensure users
still haveenough time to applythe
paint before it dries.
Waterborne paints dry much faster
thansolvent borne paints, because
they havelower VOCs.
This means in very hot weather, they
advise decorators to, where possible,
paint out of the sun and avoid painting
in the hottest part of the day outside.
Today, innovations with waterborne
enamelsnow means it is possibleto
make agreat job of the painting
indoors and outdoors and notsuffer
the undue effects of paint fumes.
The paints available today have an
attractive low sheen finish, emit low
odours thanks to no added VOCs and
they are easy to wash up later with
water.
They are both durable, washable
and ideal for awide range of
decorating projects.
Makingwalls afeature of the home is
such as leafy patterns and forests, flora
and fauna, plus landscapes, is proving
very attractivetodecorators.
The desire to make one ofthe more
boring areas of ahome into onethat is
visually excitingisstrong with ahigh
demand for inspiration.
They say dressing up walls with their
latest wallpaper collections, including
the latest fashion designs from stripes,
classic andtraditional imagery, wall
murals andtextures, appeals to
children andisagreat way to start a
conversation with guests.
They are right behind the growing
appeal of wallpaper andhave created a
retail eveningonwallpaper to be held
on Tuesday, April 21, in their shop in
Rangiora from 5.30pm to 8pm. Staff say
they will talk anddemonstrate the
latest colours,patterns andimagery
used on wallpapers anddiscuss the
trends and how to maximise the
potential of wallpaper in making a
statement about your home. They are
alsotalkingabout the increased use of
photo realistic imagery to make awall
somethingspecial as it brings nature
into the home.
Another area of design renovators
are closely looking at is recycling of old
building products.
Ben O'Reilly, manager at Graceworks
in Flaxton, says they can’t keep up with
the demand for used kitchens, while
demand for roofing iron, double glazed
windows anddoors is steady. ‘‘Demand
has always been steady for recycled
timber. It’s high on the list to create
unique flooring solutions,but we have
been surprised by the demand for
kitchens.
‘‘As quick as we can get them from
builders renovating old homes, they
have goneout the door to people
seeking affordable solutions to
redecorating their existingolder style
kitchens.’’
Fun walls. .. Walltastic wall murals are a
unique alternative to traditional wallpaper
decorating bedrooms and children’s play
areas..
ATV Kids Fun Day popular with young riders
By JOHN COSGROVE
The Canterbury ATV
Association held aATV Kids
Fun Day on aproperty near
Woodend recently saw many
eager young riders take to the
tracks to try their hands at ATV
racing.
Many like sevenyearold
Addison Milse had just started
in the sport and were keen to
see how to corner properly and
even change gears on their four
wheeled machines.
Others like fouryearold
Blake Hardy listened
attentively as his dad gave
advice on handling the
Clean up timeinthe garden ahead ofwinter
Depending on their position and soil
types, not all gardens can be cultivated
intensively from now on.
If this is the case in your vegetable
garden, consider raised beds to give
better drainage and increased soil
warmth.
Rubbish should be cleaned up and
taken to agreen waste recycling depot
or added to the compost bin.
In colder months, compostheaps
rarely heat up enough to destroy
infective spores of fungoid diseases or
the eggs of insect pests, so add only
healthy material.
Dig over areas that will not have
winter crops and apply lime (100g per sq
m). Fresh manure can be added and will
decompose over winter.
Alternatively, sow lupin, oats or
barley for digging in during October as
green manure.
Plant out cabbages to mature in
spring.
Sow broad beans about 2cm deep and
in adouble row, with 20cm between the
rows.
Beans transfer nitrogen to the soil, a
valuable sideeffect of growing the
vegetable.
All crops should be kept weedfree by
hoeing around them. Hoeing lets excess
moisture evaporate and oxygen from the
air penetrate the upper layersofsoil for
organisms that convert organic material
into plant food.
Hedges trimmed now will remain tidy
for the next six months.
If severetrimming is needed to reduce
an overgrown hedge, cut one side only
and wait until new growth is visible
before doing the second.
Flowers
Ground can be prepared over the next
month for planting rose bushes in winter
and early spring.
Add plenty of manure, digging deeply
soitgets into the lower levels of the soil.
For light, sandy soils, use fairly fresh
cow manure to retain moisture. Keep
manure at low depths and put lime on
top.
On heavy clays, straw, stable manure
or arichgarden compost is preferable.
Gypsum is invaluable in helping break
down clay.
Herbaceous plants such as
delphiniums and red hot pokers
(Kniphofia) will give better displays if
divided every few years. Lift and divide
using asharp spade. Replant pieces of
strong young growth.
Lupins and hollyhocks can be divided
in this way but are better grown from
seed unless aparticular colour is being
retained.
Sweet pea seed can be sown now for
flowers in late spring. Bijou, Cupid,
Pixie Princess and the Fantasy Dwarf
series are lowgrowing and need no
In recent years, New Zealand breeder
Keith Hammett has produced sweet
peas such as Renaissance, Pink
Reflections and Blue Reflections, with
the emphasis on bringing back amore
intense perfume.
Old varieties still available include
Cupani, found by amonk in Italy in 1695.
Colourful Garden
Its flowers are adeep blue with apurple
wing. Roseandwhite bicolour Painted
Lady dates back to 1737.
Tuberous begonias can be dried and
stored away for the winter in adry frostfree
place.
Gladioli can be lifted when the foliage
yellows.
Shake off any soil over asack or sheet
of plastic so small corms can be
retrieved, then place in paper bags
never use plastic or corms will rot with
colour or variety name written on them.
Tie the neck of the bag and hang
gladioli to dry completely, when foliage
can be removed and corms stored in
shallow boxes for replanting in spring.
Glasshouse
In the glasshouse, tomatoes still with
fruit to ripen can be helped along by
having most of their leaves removed so
plant foods are diverted from the roots
into the fruit.
If only afew fruit are left, cut them off,
attached to aportion of stem, and hang
in awarm spot to ripen.
When harvesting is over, pull the
plants out immediately to let the soil
rest.
Tomatoes grown in pots or bags should
be removed and the soil put on the
garden, where it will weather into rich
garden soil.
Replace soil in greenhouses at least
every other year.

As aprecautionary measure, we have changed the
primary water source bore for properties onthe Oxford
Rural 1drinking water supply.
The Oxford Rural 1drinking water supply has two
main sources, McPhedrons Bores 1and 2.Due to an
upward trend observed inthe nitrate levels inBore 1
since January 2026, ithas now been turned off and
is no longer used to supply the community drinking
water supply.
Speaking to areport tothe Oxford-Ohoka Community
Board onTuesday, General Manager –Utilities and
Roading, Gerard Cleary, says the water supplied by
Bore 1still fully complies with the New Zealand Drinking
Water Standards and the bore has only been turned off
“Council is undertaking investigations tounderstand the
elevated nitrate level trends observed in Bore 1and will
be looking atpotential options for managing the issue in
the short to long term,” says Gerard.
The maximum allowable limit (MAV) for nitrate inpublic
drinking water is(NO3-N) 11.3 mg/L based on the
New Zealnd drinking water standards. Since January
2026 there has been achange observed inthe nitrate
levels in Bore 1with levels atorover half ofthe MAV
of 5.65 mg/L observed through routine sampling and
testing. Bore 1has reached amaximum nitrate level
of 6.3mg/L based on tests taken since January 2026
compared to the historic median of4.9 mg/L over
the previous 12months. The nitrate level ofBore 2is
much lower bycomparison, at amaximum of 3.9mg/L
and amedian of 3.5mg/L.
Nitrate testing is undertaken monthly asrequired by
the Drinking Water Quality Assurance Rules (DWQAR)
under the Water Services Act.
“Changing the primary supply bore isasensible
precautionary measure. While water from this bore
continues tobesafe todrink, weacknowledge there
is concern about nitrates and have made this decision
to ensure that the community continues toreceive the
best quality drinking water possible.”
All Waimakariri District Council drinking water supplies,
including Oxford Rural 1, provide drinking water that
is compliant with the New Zealand Drinking Water
Standards and are safe todrink.
Over the last 20years Council has invested over
$100m inhigh quality water infrastructure and we
have a100-year strategy tofund these assets. As
part of the long term plan, afurther $41m went
towards drinking water safety upgrades.
