Stolen four times
Aqua may now be
at end of the road
BY DANIEL ALVEY
When Archna Tandon got a 4am
phone call from the police to
let her know her car had been
stolen, it came as no surprise.
It was the fourth time her
2014 silver Toyota Aqua had
been taken over the past three
years from their Southfield Dr
property in Lincoln.
The Aqua was stolen after
10pm on Good Friday. It was
found abandoned in Hornby.
“They called and asked
if I had my car, and went
and checked, and it was
gone,” she said.
“It did not surprise me
that it had been stolen
again.”
While the car has survived
its previous three
joyrides, it may be the
end of the road this time.
Her insurance company
has indicated it may be
written off due to the damage to
the front of the car, wheel, and
ignition.
Tandon said the first two
times the car was stolen it was
found abandoned, on the third
Archna
Tandon
occasion police pulled it over in
Lincoln and arrested the youths
inside.
In recent years, Toyota Aquas
have been the most stolen vehicle
in New Zealand.
AMI Insurance data shows
they are disproportionately targeted,
with a theft rate nearly
four times that of the country’s
most insured vehicle, the Toyota
Corolla.
AMI Insurance said it
received more than 9000 vehicle
theft and attempted
theft claims in 2025.
Aquas made up 8% of
all stolen vehicle claims,
it said, followed by Corollas
at 7% and Nissan
Tiidas at 6%.
For every 1000 insured
Aquas, 54 had a theft
claim, compared with 15
per 1000 Corollas.
In Selwyn, police data
shows there were 25 vehicle
thefts in 2025 compared to 14
the previous year and 27 in 2023.
Tandon's husband, Surinder,
said it was frustrating each
time the Aqua was stolen, the
car’s insurance premium had
Archna Tandon’s 2014 Toyota Aqua was left battered and bruised after its latest joyride.
increased, and they had to pay
the excess.
“We don’t get any compensation
for that from the people who
take the car,” he said.
Toyota Aquas that use traditional
keys are often targeted by
thieves because they are quick
and easy to steal.
Models with push-button starts
are generally less vulnerable.
Surinder said before the car
was stolen this time, he was in
the process of getting quotes to
have the ignition switched from
a key to a push button.
“I was in the process of getting
switched over. They clearly
knew what they were doing
because my Toyota Camry,
which was parked next to it, was
not touched.”
A police spokesperson said
inquiries into the latest theft
are ongoing. Police did not say
if the car had been involved in
any other crimes after it was
stolen.
The spokesperson also said
inquiries are ongoing into a
report of another car being
tampered with on Southfield Dr
on the same night.

Trainer feels ‘lucky to be alive’
after Addington accident
BY DAVE DI SOMMA
Veteran Burnham trainer Bruce
Negus wants his close call to
serve as a reminder to others.
The 73-year-old is facing a
six-to eight-week recovery
after being seriously injured at
Addington Raceway on Easter
Saturday.
Negus was taking two horses
off a float when one of them
“took fright and pulled me
over”.
“I’m lucky to be alive.”
He has no recollection of the
accident, but his injuries show
his head, knee and hand took
the impact.
Although badly banged up,
he has since been cleared of
concussion, undergone surgery
on his hand, and was left with 11
fractured ribs.
Despite the injuries, Negus
said he is feeling “pretty good”
and has returned to light duties
around his farm after being
discharged from Christchurch
Hospital last Wednesday.
In hindsight, Negus said
the accident could have been
avoided if he had unloaded one
horse at a time.
“It was avoidable if I had just
slowed down a bit and asked for
some help.
“I’ve prided myself on being
the one not getting injured.”
He said the incident was a
reminder of the risks involved
when working with horses.
It is Negus’ second serious
accident in more than four
decades of training horses.
“I got kicked in the head 25-30
years ago.”
Negus also thanked the many
well-wishers who have been in
contact, as well as those helping
out during the enforced lay-off.
Councillors have
say on RMA reform
BY DANIEL ALVEY
The council has had a chance
to voice its opinions on several
key Government bills.
Councillors Sophie McInness
and Tracey Macleod spoke to
the select committee on the
council’s submission about
the Planning and
Natural Environment
Bill, which is set to
replace the Resource
Management Act.
The appearance
came after Mayor
Lydia Gliddon asked
the Government for a
please explain after the
council was initially not
invited to speak to its
submission.
Said Gliddon: “There
was a large number
of submissions and a
desire to speak to the
select committee, so
they decided to add an
extra set of hearings.”
Gliddon said Minister
for the South Island
James Meager contacted her to
offer the council a 10min slot.
“A written submission
matters, but being able to
speak to it means you can
properly explain the practical
implications of reform, answer
questions, and make sure
Selwyn’s growth pressures are
fully understood.”
Appearing by video link,
McInness and Macleod raised
concerns about the cost of
implementing the changes
and reducing the level of
input communities have over
planning decisions.
Said McInnes: “We are
starting our long-term plan
planning soon, which is
budgets, rating caps
and somehow we have
to plan for the costs of
implementing these
reforms.”
“The crown can do a
lot better than this.”
Macleod said
the proposed
Sophie McInnes changes would not
stop unplanned
development, which
often results in
the council having
to bring forward
projects funded by
increased borrowing.
The bill is set to
replace the RMA, and
the Government says
Tracey Macleod it is designed to cut
red tape and speed up
housing and infrastructure.
The changes in the proposed
bill mean there will be fewer
activities requiring consent.
The bills are part of a raft
of reforms affecting local
government, including
restructuring regional
councils and changing what
councils core responsibilities
are.
Controversial billboard near
pedestrian crossing turned on
BY DANIEL ALVEY
The district’s first large digital
billboard has been switched on
in Prebbleton.
The controversial 9m
billboard on Springs Rd has
faced community opposition
since it received resource
consent in August last year.
The biggest concern was
safety, with the billboard about
50m from the main pedestrian
crossing.
Prebbleton resident Jenny
Adams, who successfully
helped lead a campaign to get
the crossing upgraded with
traffic islands, was concerned
the billboard would distract
drivers.
“Why is the billboard there?
To attract people’s attention. So
that’s a problem,” she said.
The public did not have any
say on the billboard or where
it was placed. It was consented
by the council without
consultation, which was
allowed under the District Plan.
The sign was built by
Addington-based business Vast
Billboards. Managing director
Grant Moreton said in recent
There
are still
concerns this
9m digital
billboard on
Springs Rd
will distract
drivers at the
crossing.
PHOTO: GEOFF
SLOAN
weeks he has received several
anonymous complaints about
the billboard via the company’s
website.
Moreton said there is no
evidence billboards cause
crashes, and the impact on the
traffic was considered as part of
the resource consent.
The anonymous complaints
follow two letters sent to
Moreton’s home address in
January.
One said he would “have
blood on his hands” if there
was a crash at the pedestrian
crossing.
Rebuilding trust is
a key priority for
next council boss
BY DANIEL ALVEY
The council’s next chief executive
will be tasked with rebuilding
trust with the community.
Christchurch recruitment firm
Sheffield has been engaged for
the search, with applications
open until April 29.
Former chief executive Sharon
Mason left the council in February,
after resigning
in December to take up
the top job at The City of
Onkaparinga in South
Australia. In her place,
the council appointed
Steve Gibling as interim
chief executive.
Mason’s salary was
$374,000, but the next
chief executive will be
paid around $330,000, which is
Gibling’s salary, depending on
experience.
The job listing highlights
rebuilding and maintaining the
confidence of elected members
and the community as a key
priority.
Mayor Lydia Gliddon said last
year’s election result made it clear
public trust had been eroded.
“That’s why we have that in
there; it’s not about an individual
or something that has happened.
It’s just that we know we
have a big programme of work
Lydia Gliddon
to rebuild trust with our community,
and the chief executive
plays a big role in that too.”
Other priorities for the role
include shifting from reactive
decision-making to more
planned, disciplined growth
management, and strengthening
financial oversight and value
for money within a rates-constrained
environment.
The chief executive is
the only position directly
employed by the mayor
and councillors.
Gibling declined to say
whether he would apply
for the role, telling Selwyn
Times it would be “inappropriate
to comment at
this stage”.
Gliddon said she could
not disclose the cost of the
recruitment process due to commercial
sensitivity.
“We’ve negotiated a sharp,
cost-effective arrangement for
this work to ensure good value
for our ratepayers.”
She said recruitment costs
covered key steps to attract and
assess the right candidates, such
as advertising, screening, shortlisting,
reference checks and
interview support.
Gliddon said there may be extra
cost for travel for the recruitment
and psychometric testing.
Contractor connection revealed
in yellow line removal mystery
BY DANIEL ALVEY
The mystery of who arranged to
have no-parking lines painted
over in Rolleston has now been
solved.
A Local Government Official
Information and Meetings Act
(LGOIMA) response published
on the council’s website revealed
the former owner of a Shillingford
Blvd property, Almero Du
Pisani, arranged for the lines to
be removed while the home was
up for sale last year.
The yellow lines went for about
7m, running over the entrance to
the home’s driveway and along
the grass verge to the neighbouring
driveway.
Du Pisani is a contract manager
for HEB Construction, the council’s
roading contractor.
The LGOIMA response included
an email from HEB South Island
regional manager Lee Haulter
to the council’s head of operational
delivery, Gareth Morgan,
dated March 20, saying Du Pisani
arranged for the lines to be
removed on November 16, 2025.
“Almero had asked (name
redacted) for permission to do
so in a conversation,” Haulter’s
email said.
The email also said when Du
Pisani later realised the lines
should not have been painted
over, he arranged for them to be
reinstated at no cost to the council
or HEB.
However, it remains unclear
who carried out the work, with
HEB saying it has no record of the
job or any work order issued to
its suppliers.
The only account of the work
being done comes from new
homeowner Joshika Khan,
who purchased the property
in December. She said when
she attended an open home in
November, she saw “a white van
and five or six men” appearing to
repaint the lines.
Du Pisani did not respond to
calls from Selwyn Times.
An HEB spokesperson also
declined to answer questions
from Selwyn Times about
whether Du Pisani was still
employed by the company or facing
any disciplinary action.
“We are currently investigating
this matter internally. As a process
is under way, we are unable
to provide any further comment
at this time,” the spokesperson
said.
The yellow lines have since
been reinstated across Khan’s
driveway, but not over the section
where she parks her car.
“I can still park my car there, so
I’m happy with that,” she said.
Plan to charge huts for water, waste
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Years of fighting to be treated
like other ratepayers in the
district may hit Upper Selwyn
Huts residents in the pocket.
The settlement has about 150
residents across 94 huts. They
got a major win last September
when the council agreed to
extend their leases to occupy
the reserve land for at least
another 30 years.
But now the residents are
concerned they may not be able
to afford their water and rates
bills after new council charges
were proposed. Each hut currently
pays a $1350 licence fee,
which includes their water
charges, and about $1700 in
rates. But under a new council
proposal their bills could rise
by $1000 to $1500 from July 1.
The council plans to reduce the
licence fee to $575, but may
charge the huts for being connected
to the district’s water
and wastewater system.
The proposed charge would
be $498 a year to connect to
the water supply and $952 for
wastewater, plus about $1.48 for
each cubic metre of water used.
The council is also proposing
to shift the settlement from a
communal rubbish and recycling
bin system to each hut
having its own kerbside bins at
a cost of $172 to $485 for a rubbish
bin and $94 for a recycling
bin.
Altogether, it could see residents
pay about $4000 to $4500
a year. The community has
pushed for years to be included
in the district-wide rate for
water and sewage. Despite the
cost increases, Selwyn Huts
Owners’ Association member
Kirrily Fea still
believes it is the
right direction.
Fea said the
increases would
be less than the
council’s initial
proposal to force
residents to pay
for 30% of the
$4.4m sewage
Kirrily Fea
pipeline that was completed last
year to connect the settlement.
"I see the data and facts, and
I see that it is reasonable and
better than what we could have
had.”
Fea said the increase is still
going to be “huge” for residents.
Association chair Graham
Evans also argues there will
be no need for the licence fee
from July 1, given the majority
of it paid for their water and
sewage.
He said the increased water
and wastewater costs would
be “very difficult” for a lot of
people to pay.
Resident Graeme Young is
hoping the council will reduce
the proposed increases.
"I have faith in the councillors
that they will make sure that
sort of increase does not
happen,” Young said.
Ellesmere councillor
Elizabeth Mundt said she has
already had residents approach
her with concerns.
Mundt was still waiting for a
breakdown of what the reduced
$575 licence fee will cover.
"I think we have the
opportunity to hear from the
community and have a good
debate around that figure,” she
said.
Selwyn Water said no
decision has been made yet on
bringing the settlement under
the district-wide charges for
water or sewage.
Said a Selwyn Water
spokesperson: "We spoke to
several of the Upper Selwyn
Huts residents . . . about this
and what has come through
very strongly, both through
previous council consultations
and our recent engagement,
is that the residents at Upper
Selwyn Huts wish to be treated
like everyone else in the
district, and we are listening.
"We are engaging on our
water services strategy before
any final decisions are made, so
we are not in a position to preempt
any decision, but we are
committed to fair, accurate and
equitable costs.”
•A community meeting for
Upper Selwyn Huts residents
to discuss the rates increases
will be held on Sunday from
1-2pm at Springston South
10-year lease
extension for
settlement
BY DANIEL ALVEY
An end date has been put on the
Lower Selwyn Huts.
The settlement, about 3km
from the Upper Selwyn Huts,
is prone to flooding from Te
Waihora/Lake Ellesmere and
leaseholders will now have to
vacate the land in 10 years.
The leaseholders made
submissions about the
settlement’s future to the
Department of Conservation 18
months ago in a bid to stay for
as long as possible.
Upper Selwyn Huts residents
successfully campaigned to the
council for a 30-year extension
to their leases last year. DOC has
now granted 44 Lower Selwyn
Huts leaseholders a final
10-year extension to continue to
occupy the land.
DOC director of regulatory
authorisations Pip Fox said
the huts were originally built
for recreational activities,
such a fishing and hunting,
and were never intended to be
permanent dwellings.
"The huts have flooded
eight times since 2013. Longterm
occupation of this site
is not viable due to sea and
corresponding lake level rise,”
she said.
“The concession period of 10
years gives the leaseholders
time to plan the removal
of their dwellings and the
remediation of the land, which
we are committed to.”
Leaseholders will pay a bond,
which will be held in a trust
to help achieve the long-term
regeneration and remediation
of the area.
"When considering the term
of the lease, we also wanted
to give the hut owners an
appropriate amount of time to
demolish or move their huts,”
said Fox.
She said DOC’s operations
team will work with the
leaseholders on the next phase.
"We have been open and
transparent about our process
and have signalled for a
long time what direction the
department needed to take on
this matter.”
Three lease renewal
applications were declined due
to the financial risk and debt
owed.
DOC will work with these
leaseholders over the next
six months to remove the
dwellings.

Four sets of traffic lights on
Lincoln’s main street will
have smart technology to
monitor traffic flows to avoid
The lights are part of the $46
million upgrade along Gerald
St.
"These are modern traffic
lights that use smart technology
to respond to traffic
volumes as they happen.
Instead of running on set
timers, the signals adjust to
changing traffic conditions,
helping traffic move through
the intersection more smoothly
and reducing unnecessary
waiting,” the council says.
The first new traffic signals
will be installed at the intersection
of Gerald St and West Belt
in the coming months as part
of stage one.
Further signals are planned
at Vernon Dr near New World
two and three of the project,
helping manage future growth
Helpet Park housing possible after
emergency campus plan falters
Residents enlist
Grigg in bid to
cut Arthur’s Pass
speed limit
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Housing is shaping as the likely
next step for a block of land
in Rolleston after a proposed
emergency services campus
failed to get off the ground.
Council will vote today on
whether to investigate turning
most of the 13ha Helpet Park site
into housing.
Selwyn Times understands the
land could be sold for about $17
million and developed for housing,
as it is already zoned for
medium density.
While council staff have recommended
using all of the land for
housing, an alternative option
would retain part of the site for
a new police station on Lincoln
Rolleston Rd.
The existing police station is
at capacity, with plans to add a
temporary building on the site for
extra space if needed.
The council report said police
have applied for funding to purchase
land in Rolleston in 2027/28.
Police were unable to respond
to Selwyn Times questions about
how much funding had been
requested or what other sites
were being considered if Helpet
Park is not used.
The site was set aside by the
council in September 2024 for
a proposed emergency services
campus, which would
have housed police, Fire and
A concept plan for the Helpet Park emergency services campus, which is now unlikely to go ahead.
Emergency New Zealand, Hato
Hone St John and Civil Defence.
However, a report to councillors
said funding constraints and
development timeframes have
stalled the proposal.
“Council may be better suited
to repurpose the land in order
to meet the immediate needs of
Selwyn,” the report said.
Newly released details show in
2024 the council agreed in principle,
behind closed doors, to sell
part of the land to council-owned
contractor CORDE at 15% below
market value.
That decision also noted
CORDE was in discussions about
entering a joint venture with
Taumutu, Paenga Kupenga Ltd,
and Ngāi Tahu Properties – the
economic arms of local iwi – to
develop the site as an emergency
services campus.
The council also agreed in principle
to buy the existing police
station on Tennyson St, the fire
station on Brookside Rd, and the
ambulance station on Kidman St.
Mayor Lydia Gliddon said no
formal decision to progress the
campus was ever made.
As part of today’s meeting,
councillors will vote on whether
to revoke the 2024 decision and
repurpose the surplus land for
housing.
While the campus proposal
is unlikely to proceed at Helpet
Park, council staff are seeking
approval to continue investigating
other council-owned land for the
project.
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Arthur’s Pass residents have
taken their push for a lower speed
limit to Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg.
They want the current 50km/h
limit reduced to 30km/h through
the township. However, the
proposal does not meet current
Government rules.
The stretch of State Highway
73 is classified as a rural road,
meaning 50km/h is the lowest permitted
speed.
The request was not included
in the latest round of NZ Transport
Agency Waka Kotahi
consultations.
Malvern Community Board
member and Arthur’s Pass resident
Barry Mackenzie, along with
Arthur’s Pass Association chair
Neil Smart, met with Grigg to continue
advocating for change.
Mackenzie said a case could
still be made for a 40km/h limit if
30km/h is not possible, given the
volume of tourists and pedestrian
traffic in the settlement.
Grigg has drafted a letter to
NZTA asking the agency to reconsider
the speed limit, which
pleased Mackenzie.
Grigg said she was impressed
by the work residents had done.
“We have seen success in the
past when escalating community
concerns over road safety, and I
hope to see this again reflected for
the residents of Arthur's Pass.”
Finding peace after the late shift
At 12:03am, Donna lies in bed
staring at the ceiling. She got home
from her shift 18 minutes ago.
Straight into pyjamas. Lights off.
Everything signals it’s time to sleep.
Except her mind is still in the staff
room, replaying conversations with
patients, wondering if she made the
right calls.
“My body’s home,” the 52-yearold
mental health social worker
explains. “But my brain is still at
work.”
After 25 years in the field, Donna
had earned the right to be excellent
at her job. But after three hours of
broken sleep, she was dragging
herself through shifts. When she
wasn’t working, you’d usually find
her walking, reading, or watching
her grandson playing soccer.
Then the sleep problems crept
Advertisement
SAVE $40
Koru Sleep
in. First she’d lie awake for 30
minutes after late shifts. Then an
hour. Before long, she was watching
entire hours tick past.
“Most people finish at 5pm and
go to bed at 10pm,” she explains.
“That’s five hours to decompress. I
was giving myself 15 minutes.”
The mornings were brutal. “I’d
roll out of bed still exhausted.
Groping my way around and trying
to wake up. Except I hadn’t really
even been asleep.”
Her grandson would ask her to
watch his soccer matches. She’d
nod and then she would spend the
match fighting to keep her eyes
open.
The moment that crystallised
everything: he scored his first goal
of the season. The other parents
were cheering. Donna jolted awake,
realising she’d missed it.
“Did you see it, Nana?” he asked.
“Of course,” she lied.
He looked at her. “You were
asleep, weren’t you?”
He was seven. He shouldn’t have
to track when his grandmother was
too exhausted to watch him play.
Then her sister mentioned Koru
Sleep, a natural supplement made in
New Zealand.
Donna was sceptical. “Working
in mental health, I’d seen every
miracle cure marketed to exhausted
healthcare workers. I thought,
‘Another one promising the earth.’”
But she tried it. Two capsules
when she got home, then 30
minutes to decompress before bed.
“I expected to lie there for two
hours like usual,” she says. “But
within 20 minutes, something felt
different. Not knocked out but just
settled. Like my nervous system
finally got the message that work
was over.”
The blend of passionflower,
magnesium and valerian seemed
to work with her body rather than
against it.
Within a week, she was falling
asleep in 20 to 30 minutes, not
hours. But the real difference was
the mornings.
“I wasn’t groping my way to the
kettle anymore. I’d wake up feeling
like I’d actually slept.”
The real test came at her
grandson’s next match. Donna
watched the full 60 minutes and saw
every moment of his two goals.
“You saw them both, Nana!” he
beamed.
“Every second,” she said. And
she meant it.
“I can be present for my clients,
present for my grandson, present for
my own life. I am so happy to have
my life back.”
starnews.co.nz
Following the snow in
a life without seasons
Proud To Be Me is a series telling the stories of Selwyn people. This week, Coen Lammers speaks to
Castle Hill mountain guide Anna Keeling about a life shaped by alpine adventures
Anna Keeling is deeply connected
to the mountains and ski-fields
around her home in Castle Hill,
but her career has taken her all
over the world.
Keeling’s busy schedule sees
her taking clients back-country
skiing across North America,
Europe and New Zealand, while
also guiding mountaineering
expeditions in the Himalayas
and Africa, and training
new guides at home and in the
United States.
The 56-year-old says her life
can be hectic, but said it is a
privilege – and she makes sure
to carve out time to recharge.
“Right now I am on a twoweek
break in Utah, but saying
that I just got a call to work on a
film-shoot, so we are currently
dashing through a storm to get
to Salt Lake City,” she said.
Keeling has just returned to
Utah after training guides in
Alaska and is soon off to Norway
to guide a group of regulars,
before attending technical
meetings for the International
Federation of Mountain Guides
in Austria as president of the
New Zealand Mountain Guiding
Association.
“It’s a pretty exciting lifestyle,”
she said.
At one point in her life, Anna Keeling
clocked up 33 consecutive winters by
travelling between the northern and
southern hemispheres.
Keeling shares the nomadic
life with her husband Scott,
a documentary maker, with
the family splitting their time
between Castle Hill and a second
base in Utah – a routine
long shaped by their son Obie’s
schooling.
“When Obie was at primary
school in New Zealand, we spent
half of the year there, and when
he attended high school in the
US, we spent most of the time in
Utah,” she said.
“Now he has started studying
at Canterbury University, we
will probably spend a lot more
time in Castle Hill.”
Keeling grew up in an outdoor-focused
family, where life
revolved around yachting and
skiing.
“We had pretty inspiring
outdoor education teachers at
Linwood High School and my
family was heavily involved in
Porter Heights, so my brother
and I grew up ski racing and then
adventure racing.”
She went on to become an
adventure racing pioneer, winning
the world’s first modern
event, Raid Gauloises, in 1989
alongside Steve Gurney, Sandy
Sandblom, John Howard and
Russell Prince. She also became
one of the first women to win
the Coast-to-Coast Longest Day
in 1990.
“I loved that. I liked competing,
but it was more about the adventure
– doing things you weren’t
sure you could do, pushing
yourself and exploring beautiful
places.”
Prize money from those events
allowed the then Lincoln University
student to travel, eventually
joining a ski mountaineering
expedition in the Himalayas.
There, she met mountain
guides who inspired the career
path that would define her life.
Keeling went on to build a
Keeling has established a successful mountain-guiding business which takes her
to alpine environments all over the world.
successful global guiding business,
at one stage clocking up 33
consecutive winters by moving
between the northern and southern
hemispheres.
Even for a snow lover, though,
there can be too much of it.
“We have a cabin in the Utah
desert and it’s a great antidote.
And we just spent a summer
in New Zealand pack rafting,
which was a nice change.”
Despite her global lifestyle,
Keeling says Castle Hill – and the
wider Selwyn district – remains
close to her heart.
She makes the most of the
region’s variety, from climbing
and rafting to skiing and enjoying
the social aspects of the
district’s many ski-fields.
“Stu (Waddel) from Chill
Explore and I created a product
where we take clients over
the top from Craigieburn to
Mt Olympus and we call it the
Haute Route, which is a really
famous ski touring route in
Europe from Chamonix to
Zermatt.
“We thought it would be fun to
create our own Haute Route in
Selwyn.
“I’m a big fan of Selwyn and
take full advantage of all it has
to offer.”
Action urged
on intersections
Readers share their experiences of near
misses at intersections, with calls for
stronger safety measures
Your April 8 article was very timely.
I walk my dog every night
down Waterholes Rd, and without
exaggerating, I would see a near miss at
the corner of Waterholes and Weedons
Rds once a week.
Cars are not stopping at the stop sign,
coming from Rolleston towards Lincoln
on Weedons Rd. There have been many
crashes on this corner, but there are
many more near misses that are going
unrecorded.
I was wondering why there are no
red stop signs painted on the road like
at other high-crash zone areas, which I
believe have made a difference to other
sights in Selwyn.
Thanks for the coverage, as I was
coming home to report to the council,
you have saved me a job.
- Julia Nehoff
We have lived on Selwyn Rd for 21
years and have witnessed a massive
change in both traffic numbers and
driver behaviour.
Both my wife and I recently had an
identical experience within three weeks
at the same intersection on the corner of
Waterholes and Robinsons Rds.
We missed a car running a stop sign
through Waterholes Rd at speed by
literally less than a metre. We ended
up sliding sideways on the grass berm,
narrowly avoiding a T-bone collision – it
gives you a hell of a fright.
We both now purposely slow right
down when approaching this spot. I
know for a fact others have been less
fortunate at this notorious intersection.
I have attached a photo of a loan
vehicle that was hit by someone
running a stop sign at this same
intersection mid-June last year.
The driver was critically injured and
faced a lengthy recovery.
We regularly see drivers failing to stop
at these intersections and running the
gauntlet in front of oncoming traffic.
Correspondence from myself to both
the council and Land Transport, voicing
our concerns about the Waterholes Rd-
Robinsons Rd intersection has been
largely ignored.
Sadly, it is only a matter of time before
someone is killed. We hope this will not
be the case.
- Mike Wakefield
In response to the recent ‘running
the stop sign’ article, personally there
have been no crashes yet, but there have
certainly been plenty of ‘wow, that was a
near miss’ moments.
Thinking about better solutions –
transverse rumble strips should be one
of the first safety tools considered for
Selwyn’s high‐risk intersections.
These strips run across the road
and create vibration and noise as
LETTERS Selwyn Times, April 15, 2026 | 13
drivers approach, with international
studies showing a 20-40% reduction in
failure‐to‐stop crashes.
From my own experience in the UK,
the sound and physical jolt from these
strips makes you instantly aware an
intersection is coming up, especially in
fog or low visibility.
Waka Kotahi NZTA can also expand
safety‐camera use to stop signs. Rumble
strips are funded through the National
Land Transport Fund and councils, but
I believe stop sign fines should directly
pay for installing and maintaining
intersection‐safety measures, including
a wider rollout across Selwyn and the
country. This is not currently allowed
under New Zealand law and would
require a law change which I would
support.
- Chris Saunders, Lincoln
Darfield development
The council has known about the
proposed Darfield development (Selwyn
Times, April 1) for some time.
We certainly don’t need more
development, for a while. It would be
great to have Mayor Lydia’s opinion.
The current ratepayers will pick up
the tab on this development, developers
do their job and roll the council over on
to the next development. The Selwyn
District can’t sustain this behaviour.
Mr Polglase’s comments make good
sense. Darfield has a reasonable balance
of services, and a community feel – the
village we know and love will be gone.
One of the main reasons to hold off
is incurring more debt and then the
council will have an excuse to increase
the rate burden.
Come on council push back or
otherwise the ratepayers will be picking
up the tab once again.
Submission time is here, let your
opinion be known, here is the council’s
opportunity to put the first stake in the
ground.
Kahikatea Kirkwood
Intermediate School
Celebrating Kahikatea Kirkwood
House Captains for 2026
Year 7 Camp
Our Year 7 students have
recently attended a camp at
Ōnuku Marae. This is a great way
for the children to get to know
each other and is part of
our NZ Histories
programme.
We learnt how to sail
a sailing boat. We also
visited the museum and
learnt about the Te Tiriti
o Waitangi – Treaty of
Waitangi.
“Ōnuku Marae is home to the hapū (sub-tribe) of Ngāi Tārewa
and Ngāti Īrakehu. Our home has been the setting for some of
the most significant and historic events seeded in the founding
of our nation including the signing of the Tiriti o Waitangi
(Treaty of Waitangi) by our Tīpuna (ancestors).”
Ōnuku Marae website: www.onuku.nz
At camp, I learnt
more about Māori
history and culture, both at
Takapūneke and the marae.
I also learnt quite a
few new games which
was such fun.
House Captains for Mansfield/Hillary
Brenna - Ex Wigram Primary School – Te Piki Kahu
I love Kahikatea Kirkwood Intermediate School because of all the
opportunities and activities/events that we have available at school. There
is such a variety of roles, and various sports opportunities you can join or
belong to. This year I would like to improve my skills in netball and encourage
others to experience a variety of activities. The reason why I wanted to be
a House Captain was because I love the idea of helping others, not just
students. I would like to develop my skills as a leader, it will be a good
experience for me.
Jun Beom - Ex Ilam School
I like the opportunities Kahikatea Kirkwood Intermediate school offers and
I like how we are very multi-cultural. I would like to ensure our school keeps
its good reputation, so the community will see how good our school is by the
experiences of our students. Being a House Captain was important for me as
I wanted to be a good leader and be a positive influence on other students.
House Captains for Sheppard/Freyberg
Grace - Ex Lincoln Primary
I love how there are so many opportunities culturally, academically and
sports orientated. There is something for everyone in and out of school
hours. I want to help Kahikatea Kirkwood thrive in sports this year, including
CAIMS and athletics. The reason I wanted to be a House Captain is because
I love cheering and encouraging other students in any and every way.
I believe I have a lot of potential to be a great leader for the school.
Alfie - Ex Ararira Springs Primary
I like the number of opportunities there are in winter sports and leadership
roles. This year I would like to ensure everyone works together. I wanted to
be a House Captain so I can make my house better and it will give me more
responsibility to become a better leader.
House Captains for Britten/Te Kanawa
Alexandra - Ex Ilam School
I like the opportunities Kahikatea Kirkwood Intermediate provides, in
particular, the Technology areas (Food, Metal, Wood, Plastics etc). I also like
the diversity of the school because we get to celebrate many cultures. During
my time at Kahikatea Kirkwood Intermediate I would like everyone to feel like
the school is a safe environment, both physically and mentally. I wanted to be
a House Captain because I want to lead the school with pride and make it a
better place. I would like to be a good role model.
Malcolm - Ex Wairarapa Cobham Intermediate and Prebbleton School:
Te Kura o Taumata Kuri
Kahikatea Kirkwood Intermediate School offers great leadership
opportunities and extra extension classes. I would like to try to make others
feel accepted into the community and feel a sense of belonging. Sharing the
workload to help make students feel a sense of purpose. I would like to keep
making Kahikatea Kirkwood Intermediate School a fun place to belong to
and I would like to be a good role model for others.
House Captains for Rutherford/Batten
Tatiana - Ex Wigram Primary School – Te Piki Kahu
I like the wide range of opportunities that Kahikatea Kirkwood Intermediate
School provides in extra-curricular activities. This year, I would like to see
more events/activities being held during breaktimes to bring more people
together, not just in sport. The reason I wanted to be a House Captain was
because I would like to inspire everyone across the school and help them to
feel they belong.
Malaefou - Ex Gilberthorpes School
What I like about Kahikatea Kirkwood Intermediate is that it is a really friendly
and welcoming school. I want to make sure when there are events happening
at school that everyone who gets involved enjoys it. I wanted to be a House
Captain so I could help people and be a good role model for the school.
I enjoyed learning
about the pōwhiri
where we sang to each
other and then we read
out speeches.
We also learnt how to
play traditional Māori
games.
I loved the Cansail
and Black Cat cruise
because we learnt how to
put the sails up and down.
We also saw a lot of
dolphins and seals
while on the boat.
OPEN
DAY
We learnt about
the history of the
area, it was a great
way to get to know
each other.
My favourite part
was getting to play
outside and enjoy the
culture of the marae.
I really enjoyed learning
about the history of
Aotearoa.
We are holding an Open Day
TERM ONE HIGHLIGHTS
It has been a vibrant and energising first term at Rolleston College Horoeka
Haemata, with a range of events that highlight the strength of our school
community and the spirit of our young people.
Our recent Whānau Sports Day and Spirit Day brought our four whānau
– Hōtoke, Raumati, Ngahuru and Kōanga – together in a celebration
of connection, pride and participation. These days are about much
more than competition; they reflect our commitment to E Tū Tāngata –
recognising that you have value, we succeed together, and others matter.
Our year 9 camp provided an important foundation for our newest
learners, building relationships, confidence and a sense of belonging as
they begin their journey with us. At the other end of the school, our year 13
camp created space for our senior learners to reflect on their final year,
strengthen connections, and look ahead to life beyond school.
We were also incredibly proud to see our learners represent us at Polyfest,
celebrating the richness of Pasifika culture through performance, identity
and community. Events like this are a powerful reminder of the diversity
that strengthens our kura.
These experiences are intentional. They are about growing young people
who are connected, confident and grounded in who they are.
As we often say at Horoeka Haemata: He kākano i ruia mai i Rangiātea – the
seed will not be lost. Our role is to nurture that seed, and it is a privilege to
see it flourishing in so many ways.
TE KURA TUARUA
There is a real buzz around Te Kura Tuarua (our senior campus) as learners and staff make the most of our new learning spaces. The science labs and
technology facilities quickly became standout areas, supporting active, hands-on learning. The gym floor has been put to good use in term one with
many trainings especially volleyball as our learners prepared for nationals.
Planning is already underway for the next phase, with detailed design for Stage Two now complete, and construction due to begin this term.
This will include teaching spaces for Visual Arts, Digital Technology, Fabric, English and Media studies as well as administration areas.

READY TO ACHIEVE: ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS
What a spectacular start to the year! Term one has been defined by a sense of brilliant
energy and fantastic engagement across all year levels, setting a vibrant tone for the
months ahead. We are especially thrilled to celebrate our school’s outstanding 2025 NCEA
results, which saw our learners achieve well above the national average across Levels 1,
2, and 3. A true highlight of the term was our recent endorsement event, where we took a
moment to honour the incredible dedication of the record number of students who earned
Merit and Excellence endorsements. This special occasion also served to recognise our
prestigious NZ Scholarship recipients, whose academic grit and curiosity continue to
inspire our entire school community.
TE KURA TUATAHI
At Te Kura Tuatahi, our junior campus, there has been a strong
focus on building foundations. Our year 9 learners have made
an outstanding start, supported by experiences such as
camp and whānau-based events that prioritise connection
and belonging. Alongside this, our year 10 and 11 students
are continuing to grow in confidence and independence,
supported by a learning environment that emphasises strong
relationships, clear expectations, and the development of the
skills they will carry into the senior years.
Three brothers, two shields and
BY SAM COUGHLAN
It was a great Saturday for
Waihora full-back Adam
Gualter.
Not only did he score a hattrick
of tries against rivals
Prebbleton en route to a 38-22
win, but Waihora also brought
back the Murray Cooper and
Hoff shields thanks to their
victory.
Gualter was playing alongside
brothers, Wil and George, for
the first time.
George joined
from Lincoln
University this
season and made
his debut in their
round 1 win over
Methven, a game
Wil missed with
Wil Gualter
George Gualter
injury.
“It was a good
day out,” Gualter
said.
"Always good to
beat Prebbleton,
especially at
Prebbleton. It's a
real good result
for us, and we
took the Murray
Cooper and the
Hoff Shield back
as well.”
The Hoff Shield is played
for between Waihora and
Prebbleton. The Murray Cooper
Shield is Ellesmere Rugby’s
equivalent of the Ranfurly
Shield, and is put on the line
against other sides in the subunion.
Both shields were held
by Prebbleton before Saturday.
Gualter said he enjoyed
having his brothers, who both
came off the bench in the
second half, playing alongside
him on the field.
"For those two to join me
was pretty cool. (George) is
only in his second game but
he's definitely handy to have in
the team, he played his junior
rugby at Waihora so he's always
wanted to come back at some
stage.”
Waihora travel to take
on Oxford on Saturday in
a truncated round in the
combined country competition,
with the Mid Canterbury teams
enjoying a weekend off.
Gualter said the side will be
“up for it” against Oxford who
beat Waihora 36-35 last season
definitely a good side, good boys
that play hard.”
Waihora were the only
Ellesmere club to taste victory
on Saturday, with West Melton
Magic moment for Thornley
Hurunui in Culverden.
West Melton take on Ohoka,
Lincoln visit Kaiapoi, while
Southbridge have a bye. All
games start at 3pm.
Southbridge assistant coach
Doug Maginness said the
weekend off comes at the
right time for the side, who
celebrated the club’s 150th
jubilee over Easter.
"We tried our best to put a
line through that and have a
bit of a reset for this weekend.
(We) spoke about it a lot,” he
said.
“Whether the guys weren't
quite there or not, that's up
to them. But we still gave it
our best shot. A little reset
probably won't do us any harm
at the moment.”
Waihora sit second in pool A
having won both their games
with a bonus point. They are
one point behind Southern
who have played a game extra.
Darfield and Prebbleton are
in fifth and sixth respectively,
with one win apiece.
In pool B, Southbidge are in
third on seven points, ahead
of Lincoln in sixth and West
Melton in eighth. West Melton
are the only winless Ellesmere
side.
There was both relief and
elation for Gemma Thornley
when she chalked up her 100th
driving success at Motukarara
on Easter Monday.
Her win with Franco Tim in
the Crate and Barrel/Alpine
Inn Hanmer/Mark Tweedy
Mobile Pace was her fifth
with the seven-year-old son of
Sportswriter.
She has driven him in all those
wins and the fact that Franco
Tim’s trainer, Chris Thornley, is
Gemma’s father added that extra
magic to the moment.
She had been stuck on 99 since
Cinderella Franco won at Cromwell
in early January.
“It’s been a relief to get it,” she
said.
“He means a lot to me that
horse. Mum and dad were both
there, and it was on my home
track, so it couldn’t have worked
out better.”
Thornley allowed Franco Tim
to use his customary gate speed
to lead early, before securing the
trail behind Evidently.
Once Blair Orange and Magical
Max took the lead at the
1200m, Franco Tim and Thornley
were locked up three-back
the fence. Thornley then executed
a gap perfectly to breeze
by through the middle, scoring
by one length from Magical Max
and Happy Harriet.
“He was travelling nicely. The
gaps opened up and he hit them
really well.”
Thornley, who currently
works for Greg and Ben Hope at
Woodend Beach, acknowledges
the support she has had from
family and previous employers.
“I’ve been lucky to have such
a good support network. Mark
Jones and Steven McRae, who I
worked for, have both helped my
career immensely."
Thornley drove her first winner
Nemera Franco for McRae at
Banks Peninsula in 2020.
With Thornley’s win she now
joins her aunt Olivia Thornley
and uncle Sam Thornley, recent
ex-juniors, into the open driving
ranks.
“Hopefully I’ve proved myself
enough to keep getting drives
and moving forward.”
Thornley said her driving
highlight so far has been winning
the Group 3 Bulk Liquid
Solutions Gallagher Gold Cup at
Omakau in January.
“I am getting a great
opportunity driving horses like
Midnight Dash, in that company.
Winning the Group 3 race at
Omakau, and also driving him
in the Dominion have definitely
been big highlights.”
SPORT
White holds his nerve to secure GR86 crown
BY SAM COUGHLAN
A poor qualifying session and
a near spin in the final race
of the season could not stop
Prebbleton driver Chris White
from clinching the NZ GR86
Championship title in Taupō on
Saturday.
White finished seventh and
second in his two races, and
with Sunday’s third race called
off due to Cyclone Vaianu, the
results were enough to secure
the championship when he
crossed the line in race two.
“We knew we could do it, but
it’s just a relief,” he said.
“The boys thought I was going
to have a bit more of a happy
reaction, but for me it was just
a big sigh of relief the second
I saw that chequered flag,
knowing it’s all over and I can
keep moving on in my career.”
White’s title bid was nearly
derailed on lap two of the
second race when his back
wheel was clipped while
running in second place, almost
sending him into a spin and
down the order.
Chris White clinched the NZ Toyota
GR86 championship title on Saturday
after a second-place finish in Taupō.
“It was pretty hectic, got the
heart rate up,” he said.
He went into the race with a
healthy championship lead and
only needed to finish inside the
top 12.
Nearest rival Zach Blincoe
finished fifth, but White kept
control and held on for second
– more than enough to seal the
title.
The championship win
earns White a fully-funded
spot in three rounds of the
Australian Monochrome GT4
Series, courtesy of Toyota Gazoo
Racing NZ. The series starts at
The Bend, near Adelaide, on
May 8.
White competed in two rounds
last season and hopes to contest
the full GT4 championship next
year.
“I think that’s going to be really
cool. We’re heading towards
doing that championship (in the
future) so it’s going to be really
good progress to get a few more
rounds in there,” he said.
White said his long-term goal is
to reach Supercars level.
“Every young Kiwi wants to get
to Supercars and I’m definitely
on that bandwagon, so we’ll keep
pushing forward towards that.”
Coleman relishing
return after long
layoff with injury
Nearly 21 months after rupturing his ACL during a 2024 match,
Selwyn United captain Liam Coleman is back on the pitch and
making an impression in a young side. Sam Coughlan caught
up with him
First and foremost, how good is it to
be back on the park now?
It’s pretty great, I’ve played
football my whole life and that
was easily the longest break I’ve
ever had. It was nice to get a
little bit of time off, but you don’t
really realise how much you
miss it until you don’t have the
opportunity any more.
What did you do to yourself?
I tore my ACL in an unlucky
challenge in a game against
University the year before last. I
actually didn’t come off straight
away – I went down and the
physio had a look, I was like,
‘I'll try and play through it’. I
probably played for another two
minutes then just said ‘I can’t
move my leg’.
The next day I went to the
doctor, had it checked out, had
some X-rays and an MRI and
they said the ACL was torn, and
prepped me for the next stages
after that.
What is the rehab like for an injury
like that?
I had to rehab my knee first
– get the swelling down and get
a bit of strength back. Then went
into surgery and had to redo the
whole process all over again.
At first it was just two weeks of
Name: Liam Coleman
Age: 23
Position: Midfielder
Favourite teams: Wellington
Phoenix, Manchester United
Matchday meal: Marmite on toast
Pre-game routine: Arrive to the
ground and talk to teammates, then
get ready. Always right shin pad
then left, right sock then left, right
boot then left
Best football memory: Captaining
Selwyn this season, interschool
games in Wellington
nothing – you can’t stand, can’t
walk, all that stuff. Then it’s just
slowly relearning how to walk,
regaining the strength in the
knee, starting to jog and getting
back to the gym.
The hardest part is keeping
the balance. If you focus too
much on the injured leg, you can
neglect the other one. A lot of ACL
re-injuries are to the other leg for
that reason. It can take anywhere
from nine to 12 months.
When did you get back on the pitch?
I jumped into a couple of
trainings last year – just noncontact
stuff with passing drills
and jogging. My first actual fullcontact
training would have been
February.
Selwyn United captain Liam Coleman is back playing as his side looks to cement its Southern League spot.
PHOTOS: DUTCH VAN BARNEVELD
It was awesome to be back,
the guys at Selwyn were real
supportive while I was out – it’s
a real good community amongst
the team.
How long have you played at
Selwyn?
Since 2022. I’m from
Wellington originally, spent
some time in the Phoenix
academy up there. I came
down to Christchurch (in 2020)
and started at Coastal Spirit.
Lee Padmore, who was my
coach at the Phoenix and was
now at Selwyn, said, ‘If you
want to come over, there’s an
opportunity for you’.
I haven’t looked back since.
Outside of football, what do you do?
I work for a data analytics
company in Christchurch. It’s
just a bunch of spreadsheets and
stuff, providing analysis on the
market, which is a bit tedious,
but it’s good fun. I enjoy it.
Did you expect to be given the
captain’s armband?
No, not really, it was a bit of a
shock when it happened. We’ve
got quite a young team, so I
definitely expected to be part
of the leadership group, but
not captain. I just want to take
advantage of that and help the
team, I guess.
How has the knee felt so far this
season?
It feels good – I’m not really
thinking about it anymore.
I’ve done all the work to
rehab it, so I’m still taking care
of it and keeping an eye on it,
but no problems.
Was it hard being on the sidelines?
It was really hard watching
the guys, seeing the games and
thinking, ‘if I was fully healthy,
I could be contributing’. But the
guys were really supportive –
they kept me around the team
and made sure I kept my head
up.
What’s the goal for the season?
For every team, the goal is
always to get as many points as
possible, but I think for us it’s
more of a mentality thing.
We didn’t win a single game
last year, so we want to turn
Foster Park into a place where
people come and think, ‘If I play
against Selwyn this week, that’s
going to be tough’.
It’s about looking up, not
down – not worrying about
relegation, pushing for midtable,
top of the table spots, and
just doing as well as we can.
Coleman has scored three goals after returning from injury this season, including
this last-minute penalty to draw with Christchurch United in round 2.
How would you describe the start to
the season for Selwyn United?
We had three really tough
games to start, all against
the top three from last year.
We managed one point from
those, with a 1-1 draw against
Christchurch United, but there
were definitely some positives.
Personally, I’m just grateful
to be back out there. The team’s
really fizzing and rearing to go.
I’ve had the opportunity to
captain a few of the games and
score a couple of goals, which is
always nice.
Coleman joined Selwyn in 2022 after stints in the Wellington Phoenix academy
and with Coastal Spirit.

Jubilee joy as Southbridge RFC turns 150
Southbridge Rugby Football Club
celebrated its 150th jubilee over
Easter weekend, marking a major
milestone for one of Canterbury’s
oldest clubs.
Festivities began on Good
Friday with a Q+A session
featuring guest speakers Andy
Ellis, Wayne Smith and Waisale
Serevi.
On Saturday, a full day of rugby
saw junior teams take the field in
the morning before Southbridge’s
division 1 and 2 sides faced
Darfield in the afternoon.
Darfield spoiled the party in
the division 2 clash with a 36-30
win, but Southbridge responded
by taking out the division 1 main
event 48-29.
Celebrations wrapped up on
Easter Sunday with golden oldies
and women’s matches. Seven
members of the Carter family –
including former All Black Dan
and his father Neville – took part
in the golden oldies game.
Said Neville: “It was absolutely
brilliant, everything went really,
really well. The organising
committee did a marvellous job
with everything and, of course,
we had a reasonably good
weekend weather-wise too.”
Former All Black Dan Carter suited up for the golden oldies match, playing alongside his cousin and four uncles. Father
Neville (behind) refereed the game.
RURAL LIFE
Fertiliser crisis: a cautionary tale
ISABELLE TERESA
Around 30% of manufactured fertiliser
travels through the Strait of Hormuz
– except, more precisely – currently it
doesn’t. Which is a problem for New
Zealand, since we import two-thirds
of our fertiliser from the Middle East.
While kiwi agri-suppliers reassure that
autumn’s stocks are already here, prices
are rising and there seems no realistic
resolution to the conflict in sight.
This crisis is bleak for farmers, but
we’ve been here before. NZ previously
suddenly lost access to a cheap source
of urea fertiliser on which we utterly
relied, in a bizarre and salutary tale still
affecting us today.
You may not have heard of the central
Pacific island, Nauru. After all, it’s tiny;
at 21sq.km it’s the third-smallest country
in the world, bigger only than Monaco
and Vatican City. Yet, last century, our
agriculture utterly depended on Nauru
because of one single commodity…
bird poo. Politely called “guano” and
romantically called “white gold”,
Nauru was literally covered in the stuff.
Millenia of accumulated droppings
transformed the coral limestone to
high-grade, phosphorus-rich rock, and
phosphate is excellent fertiliser for
pasture grasses.
Germany was the first coloniser of
Nauru, so the island’s first phosphate
mining sent exports to the northern
hemisphere. Post WW1, the League of
Nations handed joint administration of
the island to the UK, NZ and Australia,
sending the cheap exports our way just
as we were wrestling our landscape into
intensive pastureland.
Nauru achieved independence in
1968 and continued exploiting this
commodity, becoming briefly, in 1975,
the world’s second-highest per capita
GDP country after Saudi Arabia. But
as the finite resource approached
depletion, the island hit social,
economic, cultural and environmental
freefall. After Nauru took legal
proceedings to the International Court
of Justice, we, Australia and Britain
committed to settlement payments for
our roles in its decline. These payments
continue to this day – when Winston
Peters visited in 2024, it was to pledge
continued funds to boost resilience.
Now, the whole central plateau –
80% of the island – remains a barren,
jagged wasteland, and the surrounding
marine ecosystems damaged. Residents
live on a coastline strip, importing
most of their food, and Nauru is in the
history books as a textbook example
of “resource curse”. So now that we’re
facing our current fertiliser crisis, it’s an
opportunity to reflect. Are there ways to
achieve agricultural success differently?
And if we again need to diversify our
source/s of fertiliser, can we do so more
sustainably?
RURAL LIFE
Solar on your farm: risk- and investment-free!
PX Solar understands the needs and
conditions of New Zealand farming. Our
associate companies currently operate
10 farms in Canterbury and 14 in the
North Island. This deep connection
to the land and rural economy drives
our interest in solutions that enhance
both farm productivity and national
sustainability.
The irrigated farm area in Canterbury
accounts for 60% of New Zealand’s
total, with electricity being one of the
largest and fastest-growing operational
costs. To address this, PX Solar has
successfully installed solar systems
on two of our Canterbury farms,
demonstrating clear benefits:
• Cost reduction: Solar-generated
power directly reduces grid
electricity draw during the irrigation
season, lowering farmer expenses.
• Emissions reduction: Each megawatt
of solar capacity reduces CO₂
emissions by approximately
146 metric tons annually.
Our unique solar offering for farmers
• We will cover all capital expenditure
and maintenance costs of the solar
installation for 25 years.
• Savings on power bills will be shared
between the farmers and us.
• We will be responsible for the
maintenance and insurance of the
solar system throughout those
25 years.
• As the solar system has an expected
lifespan of more than 30 years,
ownership will be transferred to the
farmer at no cost at the end of Year
25.
• Any carbon credits generated will be
passed on to the farmer, should they
become available.
What this means for you
We handle the investment and the
risk! PX Solar will pay for everything up
front and you share the savings from
your lower power bill with us. You get
immediate savings with no upfront cost,
no maintenance worries, and a valuable
asset at the end.
After 25 years, you own the system
outright – for free. It will keep
generating power for another 5+ years,
meaning all the savings from then on
are 100% yours. You can also choose to
buy the system earlier if you wish.
Expert advice on what to do for your garden this week
VEGETABLES
As temperatures drop, weeds
speed up their growth cycle,
producing a crop of seeds in a
surprisingly short time.
Remember the old saying ‘one
year’s seeding, 10 years’ weeding’
and keep the garden weeded. At
the very least, cut flower heads
off weeds and compost them.
Do not leave flower heads on
the ground as they will produce
seeds in a last-ditch effort to take
revenge on the gardener.
Onion seed can be sown now
in shallow drill, 30cm apart.
The small plants can stand over
winter and mature next summer.
Prepare the bed by digging in
manure.
Garlic and shallots should be
lifted on a dry day and stored. Tie
the stems together and hang in a
warm, dry spot.
‘Waste not, want not’, is another
old saying, so thin turnips and
spinach when the thinnings are
big enough to cook.
Main crop potatoes should be
dug.
Lift them on a fine day, leave
the tubers exposed for a few
hours to dry, then store in a single
layer in shallow boxes lined with
newspaper. Cover with paper and
store in a dark, dry place.
In contrast, seed potatoes are
stored exposed to light. Place
in shallow trays with their eyes
(embryo shoots) looking up. If
you are saving your own potatoes
to use as seed, choose eggsized
tubers from plants which
produced heavy crops.
All members of the Primula family, including primroses, can be planted now and
many will flower sporadically throughout a mild winter before coming into full
bloom in spring.
Remember the old saying ‘one year’s seeding, 10 years’ weeding’ and keep the garden weeded. At the very least, cut flower
heads off weeds and compost them. Do not leave flower heads on the ground as they will produce seeds in a last-ditch
effort to take revenge on the gardener.
Cabbages, swedes, turnips,
curly kale, Chinese cabbage,
broccoli and Brussels sprouts
can be sprinkled with derris
dust to protect them from white
butterflies and other pests.
Produced from a climbing plant
from Asia, whose roots contain
the poison rotenone, derris has
low toxicity to humans and
bees but should not be applied
within two to three days of
harvest.

FLOWERS
Continue to plant springflowering
bulbs. Tulips need
well-limed soil, while other
bulbs should have it applied
sparingly. Blood and bone and
bonemeal are ideal fertilisers.
The Primula is a genus which
includes polyanthus, primroses,
cowslip (P. veris) and sweetscented
auriculas. Most of this
group need constantly moist soil
and some sun, although the fairy
primrose (P. malacoides) needs
part-shade and well-drained,
gritty soil.
All members of the Primula
family can be planted now and
many will flower sporadically
throughout a mild winter before
coming into full bloom in spring.
Divide existing clumps and
enrich the ground where they
are to go with plenty of manure,
a moderate application of lime
and some blood and bone.
Plant lilies before the soil
becomes too wet and cold for
them to make their unseen
but important growth through
winter. Because they need welldrained
soil, bulbs can be placed
on gravel mixed with compost.
Do not add lime.
In milder areas, fuchsias,
geraniums and pelargoniums
can be propagated outdoors from
cuttings taken when pruning,
but for most of the region this is
better done in a greenhouse.
As the flowering season ends
for tuberous begonias and the
leaves turn yellow, gradually stop
watering to help the corms ripen
before winter. Keep them dry
during the winter months, either
in or out of their pots.
Indoor cyclamens showing
flower buds can have a regular
watering of liquid manure to
encourage good-sized blooms.
Water from the bottom and keep
pots near light.
As the danger of frosts
increases, chrysanthemums
planted in pots can be brought
indoors. Provide plenty of
ventilation, water on warm days
and apply liquid manure until
the flowers appear.
FRUIT
Strawberries can still be
planted in a sunny spot. Apply
superphosphate or bone dust to
aid healthy growth.
New strawberries do best in
moist soils with plenty of organic
material and well-decayed leaf
mould added.
Strawberries can still be planted in a
sunny spot. Apply superphosphate or
bone dust to aid healthy growth.
MOTORING Selwyn Times, April 15, 2026 | 29
MG takes aim
at rivals with
big, bold QS
Among the latest in a seemingly
continuous conveyor belt of
new models from MG is the
QS – a large, affordable sevenseat
SUV aimed at making a big
impression with buyers here.
The company is matching its
ambitions with equally large
models, including the QS. It has
also entered the ute market
with the extra-large U9, based
on the LDV Terron.
Both brands sit under Chinese
automotive giant Shanghai
Automotive, aggressive marketers
determined to establish
themselves as credible players
in this segment.
MG has a lot riding on the success
of both the U9 and QS, with
the latter likely to have broader
appeal. It offers strong value for
money, smart modern styling, a
generous features list, and the
reassurance of a seven-year,
unlimited-kilometre warranty.
The QS is also considerably
cheaper than many of its main
rivals, notably the Kia Sorento
and Toyota Highlander. Those
competitors benefit from fuelefficient,
low-emission hybrid
powertrains, while the QS relies
on a conventional petrol engine.
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
However, MG has access to
hybrid technology that seems
certain to find its way into the
QS before long.
The more time I spent with
the QS, the more it felt like a
longer, wider version of the MG
HS mid-sized SUV.
Its sharp, sleek profile has
caught some motoring pundits
by surprise and highlights
MG’s growing confidence in
producing visually striking vehicles
– with varying degrees of
success.
That presence helped the QS
earn a place among the finalists
in this year’s New Zealand
Motor Writers Guild Car of the
Year awards.
MG has tasted success here
before, with the MG4 EV taking
the title in 2022, and the
QS is good enough to mount a
credible challenge, although
this year’s field is particularly
strong.
Key highlights on the QS
résumé include contemporary
styling – not all of it original,
and at times a little generic
– and a strong suite of new technology
that will appeal to many
buyers.
Rating out of 10: Performance 6, Handling 7, Build Quality 7, Comfort 7, Space 8, Styling 7, Fuel Economy, on
road test average consumption, 9.4L/100km, Value for money 8
Five Star 2024 ANCAP crash rating
Price: $55,990
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
The standout is the pricing:
from $49,990 for the entry-level
front-wheel-drive Excite, rising
by $6000 for the flagship
Essence AWD. That undercuts
its main large seven-seat AWD
rivals, including the Sorento
and Highlander.
While those models offer
petrol-hybrid powertrains, the
QS sticks with a conventional
2.0-litre turbo petrol engine — a
choice that undoubtedly helps
keep pricing highly competitive.
The test vehicle here was
the AWD Essence, which suits
outdoor lifestyles, although
its 180mm ground clearance
limits more serious off-road
excursions if you value the
underbody.
The 2.0-litre turbo isn’t a barnstorming
performer, producing
153kW and 360Nm of torque
– enough for solid low-speed
pulling power. However, it’s
working hard to move a vehicle
of this size, with the QS tipping
the scales at around 2000kg.
Initial acceleration is reasonably
brisk, but performance
fades through the mid-range.
The engine’s enthusiasm
tapers off noticeably, particularly
over hilly terrain or when
fully loaded with passengers and
luggage.
On the open road, the QS is
smooth and generally refined,
with minimal intrusion from
engine, wind, and road noise.
Overall, though, the powertrain
lacks the all-round punch
needed to move such a large SUV
with real authority.
A hybrid – ideally a plug-in
– would be a welcome addition,
bringing the performance
this otherwise capable SUV
deserves. The nine-speed automatic
delivers clean, efficient
shifts, although not always with
the same level of smoothness as
some competitors.
Reinforcing its value-formoney
credentials is a strong list
of standard features, including
automatic LED headlights, eyecatching
21-inch alloy wheels,
and a 12.3-inch dual-screen infotainment
system with Android
Auto.
A 360-degree camera provides
excellent all-round visibility,
while the central display offers
seamless smartphone integration
via Apple CarPlay and
Android Auto, along with builtin
navigation and wireless
charging.
Safety is comprehensive,
with features such as adaptive
cruise control, lane departure
warning, and autonomous emergency
braking included under
MG’s Pilot Safety suite. This has
helped the QS achieve a five-star
ANCAP safety rating under the
organisation’s latest, more stringent
testing protocols.
The QS ticks most of the ride
and handling boxes, feeling controlled
and confident in a wide
range of conditions, and generally
at ease on demanding roads.
At the extremes, however,
the ride can lose composure,
struggling with high-frequency
bumps and corrugations on
rural gravel surfaces.
Body roll under pressure is
present but acceptable, aided
by an effective and responsive
AWD system that is well suited
to New Zealand’s varied driving
conditions.
Your guide to all things Real Estate
in the Selwyn District
Be ready for the cooler
months ahead
15
As temperatures start to drop, you
might find yourself using your heat pump
more often. Autumn is an ideal time to
ensure your heat pump is prepared for
the colder months. A bit of maintenance
now can help keep your home warm and
comfy during winter, while also keeping
your power bills under control.
Your heat pump works the hardest
during winter, so getting it serviced in
autumn helps prevent problems when
you need it most. Stay warm on freezing
winter mornings by being proactive and
booking maintenance ahead of the cold
weather. This also means you’re less
likely to face long waits, as heat pump
technicians tend to be busiest once winter
begins.
However, as a homeowner, you can
also help with maintenance. One of the
simplest tasks you can do is to clean the
filters. Over time, dust and dirt build up
in the indoor unit, restricting airflow and
causing the system to work harder. Most
filters can be easily removed and rinsed
with warm water. Once dry, they can be
replaced in just a few minutes. Cleaning
filters every few months helps maintain
efficiency and improve indoor air quality.
It’s also a good idea to check the
outdoor unit. Keep the fallen autumn
leaves, along with any twigs and debris,
clear to avoid blocking airflow. Make sure
there is plenty of clear space around the
unit so it can operate efficiently.
How do you know when to get your
heat pump professionally serviced?
Do a quick check of the airflow in your
home by turning the heat pump on, and
make sure warm air is circulating freely
from the vents. If the airflow seems
weak, it may be a sign that the filters
need cleaning or that it’s time for a
professional service.
It’s smart to save money by handling
basic maintenance at home. However,
you might save more in the long run by
paying for an annual professional service
to keep your heat pump working at its
best. Technicians are trained to check
refrigerant levels, examine components,
and ensure everything operates safely
and efficiently.
Be prepared and take a few simple steps
now so your heat pump delivers reliable
warmth throughout the winter months.
