Dollar deal floated for stables redevelopment plan
BY KEES CHALMERS
A plan to redevelop the Lyttelton
Borough Council stables into
an artistic haven will not be
impacted by an absence of city
council funding, says project
lead Paul Dietsche.
The city council has told Te
Pataka o Rakaihautu Banks
Peninsula Community Board
there is no funding available to
repair the stables.
Dietsche had put a proposal
for the future of the stables
to the community board in
December.
The cost to repair the building
was estimated to be $3.4 million
in 2024.
Dietsche wants to turn the
stables on Donald St into a
functional creative hub for
artists, musicians, designers and
community groups.
He went into the project not
expecting the city council to
fund the project and is looking
to use a similar method to the
Governors Bay Jetty rebuild.
The city council sold the
jetty to the Governors Bay Jetty
Restoration Trust for $1, which
then raised the funding.
“(We’ll) have the council sell it
to us for a dollar, we pursue the
repairs through private means,
then when it's all up and running,
we could sell it back to the council
for them to maintain it,” he said.
“We’re going to continue
to pursue it, whether the council’s
going to fund it or
not, it’s not a big deal.”
The heritage building, built in
1914, was severely damaged in
the 2011 earthquakes and became
unsafe to occupy. It has remained
empty and unused since.
Crash corner
has residents
fearing fatality
BY KEES CHALMERS
A “bad” crash at a Moncks Bay
corner is “a matter of when not
if”, says resident Sam Carroll.
Carroll, his partner Sacha
Watson and their seven-monthold
daughter Charlie have lived
on the corner of Wakatu Ave
and Main Rd since December
last year – and he has already
seen enough to raise the alarm.
There have been three
crashes at the corner, including
one on the day they were
viewing their future home at an
open house in November.
A car travelling from Sumner
towards the city missed the
corner and crashed through
the fence and garden shed,
which stopped it from hitting
the house. The crash happened
about five minutes after they
had left the viewing.
They were driving back
through Sumner when they
came across the scene.
Despite the crash, Carroll
said the opportunity to buy the
house was too good to pass up,
and he hoped it was a one-off.
All three crashes ended
with vehicles on the footpath
– an area where Carroll said
children frequently bike and
walk.
Funding row over unfinished
business on Coastal Pathway
BY KEES CHALMERS
City council staff and the Coastal
Pathway Group are at odds over
whether the 6.3km trail from
Ferrymead to Sumner Beach is
finished.
Group treasurer Tim Lindley
and chair Hanno Sander have
asked for the original $720,000
budget, set aside in the council’s
three-year capital plan for
2027/28, to be reinstated after it
was cut to $120,000 in the draft
Annual Plan 2026/27.
They also want $360,000
brought forward into this year’s
Annual Plan to allow planning to
start for two stopping platforms
with wind shelters along the
Moncks Bay causeway.
City council acting planning
delivery transport manager Matt
Goldring said the reduced budget
reflects the project’s current
stage.
“The budget was reduced to
reflect that the project is now in
the defects liability period and
funding is no longer required
to deliver the approved project
scope,” he said.
“As all scope has been completed,
the remaining budget
is proposed to be removed
through the Annual Plan change
and reprioritised in line with
the council’s overall funding
approach.”
A concept design of the stopping platforms along the Moncks Bay causeway.
HAVE YOUR SAY
Should the the city council reinstate
funding for stopping platforms on the
Coastal Pathway? Send your thoughts
to kees.chalmers@alliedmedia.co.nz
in 200 words or less.
The Annual Plan will be
finalised on June 23.
Lindley said the pathway
should not be considered
finished.
“Some people think because
the pathway is down that the
job is finished, when there are
still other needs to be met to
make it work
better.”
He said
stopping
platforms are the
most commonly
requested
addition from
pathway users,
although
feedback so
far has been
informal.
Nathaniel Herz
Jardine
Heathcote ward councillor
Nathaniel Herz Jardine said he
was initially supportive of the
proposal, but has since heard
opposition from some residents.
“ I’m going to the Coastal
Pathway (group) and asking
them ‘can you actually provide
this feedback? What does it
actually look like? What sort of
surveys have you done?’,” he
said.
“Then I can get a really clear
sense of what they’re actually
talking about when people say
they want this.
“ I just want to make sure
there’s actually support for it in
the community before I fight for
it in the Annual Plan process.”
The Coastal Pathway opened
in November 2023 at a cost of
$26.25 million.
Fast & Fastidious
by R.M. Caldwell
The Fast and the Furious meets Bridgerton in
this delightfully fun regency romp from debut
New Zealand author R.M. Caldwell. Lucy Elliott,
the young neurodivergent daughter of wealthy
socialites, sneaks out every full moon to watch
the illicit Night Races, where class doesn’t
matter - only the fastest carriage does. When
she finds out that the newest suitor in town,
Captain James Dashwood, is not only a fan of
the races himself but also a competitor, she
decides to find out more about this mysterious
man. Meanwhile, a slew of carriage robberies
has been taking place in the county. Could the
culprit be a competitor from the Night Races?
Lucy and Dashwood are both determined to
find out who is involved, but they’re playing
a dangerous game - and society is always
watching.
Out of the Ashes A young woman’s survival of
White Island, and the mother’s love that saved her
by Stephanie Browitt, Marie Browitt
The story of one young woman’s survival against
the odds, and how the love of her mother saved
her. When the White Island volcano erupted in
New Zealand in 2019, it shattered the lives of
Stephanie and Marie Browitt. Stephanie, just 23
years old, suffered horrific burns to 70 per cent of
her body and lost her younger sister, Krystal Eve,
in the tragedy. Both Stephanie and her father, Paul,
were placed in an induced coma, leaving Marie to
face the unimaginable: the potential loss of her
entire family. As Marie ran from one ICU room to
another, Paul lost his battle to survive. Out of the
Ashes is the extraordinary story of how Stephanie
miraculously fought back, with her remarkable
mum beside her every step of the way, and how
mother and daughter were forced to find strength in
each other to survive the unthinkable. This deeply
moving story explores Stephanie’s fight for survival,
her gruelling recovery, and her rise as an advocate
for body positivity and resilience. Stephanie and
Marie Browitt show us the power of love, courage
and the human spirit.
Iwi ‘expects’
bigger role in
decision-making
BY KEES CHALMERS
Rāpaki iwi Te Hapū o Ngāti
Wheke is calling for a new
strategic partnership with the city
council to ensure it is involved
in key decisions about land and
waterways it acts as kaitiaki for.
Ngāti Wheke chair Joseph
Tyro and deputy chair Manwanui
Parata presented to
city councillors on Tuesday as
part of Annual Plan 2026/27
hearings.
“Our rights as Te Hapū
o Ngāti Wheke are not
assumed, they are guaranteed,
non-negotiable
and must be upheld,”
Tyro said at the hearing.
“It is our expectation to
be engaged at every level,
to be included in key
decision making and bettered
to exercise our role
as kaitiaki, mana whenua
and mana moana in our place.
“We expect a new age of
co-operation moving into the
future, promised by the Crown
and the Ngāi Tahu Claim Settlement
Act 1998 apology.”
Ngāti Wheke is seeking the
development of a shared data
system with the council to help
monitor issues and support
solutions.
Tyrone Fields
Tyro and Parata also called
for quarterly “mana to mana”
meetings with mayor Phil
Mauger, a new memorandum of
understanding on engagement,
and an annual $100,000 strategic
partnership contribution.
They want representation on
appointment panels for council
governance and board roles, as
well as involvement in infrastructure
decisions affecting
harbour settlements. The iwi
also called for sufficient funding
in this year’s Annual
Plan to address immediate
concerns.
A full review of the
council’s procurement
policy, with Ngāti Wheke
involvement, was also
requested.
The submission follows
concerns raised earlier
this year over repeated
sewage discharges into
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour
and what iwi described as a
failure to properly notify mana
whenua.
“This is not just about a submission
– this is about the health
of Whakaraupō and the health
of our people,” Parata said.
“We are dealing with failing
infrastructure, declining
water quality and increasing
pressure on the entire ecosystem.
Whakaraupō can no longer
sustain us in the way it once did.
“The expectation is simple –
zero discharge of wastewater
and contaminated stormwater
into Whakaraupō.
“We are ready to partner. We
bring capability, commitment
and a long-term view. We are
ready to work with you to make
this partnership real,” he said.
Linwood Ward councillor
Yani Johanson asked whether
the iwi management plan, last
completed in 2013, should be
reviewed. Tyro said it should.
Banks Peninsula Ward councillor
Tyrone Fields said after
the meeting the submission was
compelling.
“It was a powerful submission.
I understand the aspirations of
the rūnanga and will support
them where I can.
“The wastewater outflows
into the harbour recently were
absolutely unacceptable, so
we’ve got some work to do
there,” he said.
process in the Lower Ōpāwaho
Heathcote to Taylors Mistake
area, following a decision by
councillors at last week’s policy
and planning committee meeting.
The areas were selected based
on coastal hazard risk, the number
of public and private assets
exposed to future flooding and
erosion, and community feedback
about readiness to take part
in adaptation planning.
Deputy mayor and policy and
planning committee chair Victoria
Henstock said confirming
the next adaptation areas is an
important step in maintaining
momentum following the city’s
first completed adaptation plan
last year.
“These communities face
increasing impacts from sea level
rise, coastal flooding, and land
movement, and they’ve clearly
told us they’re ready to engage in
planning for the future,” Henstock
said.
“Starting our adaptation planning
with them now gives people
time to understand the risks,
consider a range of options, and
be involved in shaping long‐term
pathways for their local area.”
Early preparation and
technical work will begin soon,
with community engagement
expected to start in late 2026.
Project to rely on
private funding
‘I would hate for someone to be
killed and I didn’t do anything’
› From Page 1
Dietsche had a walk through
of the stables last week with
the project’s technical team and
Lyttelton Harbour Business
Association chair Sabrina
Saunders.
“We came away from that
thinking the conditions certainly
need some work but
there’s nothing here that’s
insurmountable,” he said.
The city council will be
covering holes in the roof
and securing the building
next week.
Dietsche is now waiting
on formal agreements
with the project’s technical
team to be finalised.
The group will then put
together a plan to submit to
potential partners.
Dietsche has received
expressions of interest in using
Paul Dietsche
the space from 21 individuals and
groups.
The city council’s cost estimate
comes from ChristchurchNZ’s
proposed high end redevelopment
of the stables in 2024,
which included hospitality outlets,
visitor accommodation, an
entertainment venue, community
spaces and terraced housing.
The agency has not
worked on the project since.
Dietsche wants to retain
the building’s stripped back
and historic look, which he
said would bring down the
cost significantly and make
it affordable for Lyttelton
artists to use.
“I don’t think it would
be something that really local
Lyttelton artists and musicians
would want. I think it’s more of a
rough and rugged feel,” he said.
•Library restoration
approved, page 8
A community initiative is looking to restore the Lyttelton Borough Council stables
to its former glory by turning it into a haven for local artists.
› From Page 1
He says speed is the main
issue. While the limit is 40km/h,
he said many drivers do not stick
to it.
“If you’re not paying attention
and you are going faster than the
speed limit, you could have some
issues,” he said.
“It’s just inviting bad things to
happen.”
Carroll said there are constant
near misses and the sound of
tyres screeching as drivers try to
correct themselves on the sharp
corner.
“It’s becoming a pretty common
occurrence.”
He has been told by longerterm
residents the problem has
worsened since a traffic island
was installed in March 2023,
tightening the corner.
Carroll spoke to city councillors
on Tuesday as part of
Annual Plan 2026/27 hearings.
“I would hate for someone to
be killed and I didn’t do anything,”
he said.
“I just hope they (city council)
listen because it is a serious issue
and something bad will happen.
It’s not a matter of if but when.”
He is asking the city council to
review safety at the site, provide
an update on any investigations,
carry out a site inspection and
consider improvements such as
better signage, protective barriers
or changes to the traffic
island design.
on the corner of Main Rd near
alliedmedia.co.nz in 200 words or less.
Another crash last month saw
a motorist miss the corner and
hit a neighbour’s fence about
2am. In a separate incident, a
driver veered over the centre
line, collided with oncoming
traffic and crashed into a fence
next to Carroll’s property.
City council head of transport
Stephen Wright said staff are
aware of the safety concerns
and are investigating options.
“A new curve advisory signage
is being installed to improve
delineation for approaching
traffic and a tube count survey
has been ordered to measure
vehicle speeds through this
section of road,” he said.
“Residents’ concerns relating
to speeds have also been
passed on to Police and line
marking changes are also being
investigated.”
Wright said the traffic island
was installed to provide a safer
crossing point for bus users and
Moncks Bay residents.
One non-injury crash has
been reported within 50m of the
intersection since the island was
installed.
However, Wright said staff
are aware of three additional
crashes that are not recorded
in NZ Transport Agency Waka
Kotahi’s crash analysis system.
They’re Ageing Faster Than You Think
Why senior pets need more frequent check-ups - and how early detection can add years of quality life
Our pets age much faster than we do. A rough guide is
that dogs age around seven years to our one, and cats
around five to one.
That means a single year for a senior pet can represent
the equivalent of 5–7 human years—so a lot can change
in a short time.
For this reason, we recommend at least annual health
checks for senior pets, and ideally every six months.
Regular examinations give us the best chance to detect
problems early, before they become more serious.
What should you look for at home?
Pets are very good at hiding illness, so changes are
often subtle. Keep an eye out for:
Increased thirst or urination
Changes in appetite or weight
Stiffness or slowing down
Reluctance to jump, run, or climb stairs
Behaviour changes (anxiety, withdrawal, irritability)
Confusion or altered sleep patterns
Hearing or vision decline
Bad breath or difficulty eating
Changes in coat quality and grooming habits
Even small changes can be early warning signs of
underlying disease.
Why early detection matters
Preventative care isn’t just about treating illness—it’s
about finding it early and slowing it down.
Senior health checks include a thorough physical exam,
and we often recommend routine blood and urine
testing. These tests can detect early signs of conditions
such as kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, and
thyroid disorders—often before your pet shows obvious
symptoms.
When we detect disease early, we have far more options
to manage it effectively and maintain a better quality of
life for longer.
Ageing doesn’t have to mean slowing down
It’s easy to assume that changes like slowing down are
“just old age,” but pain and disease are often involved.
With the right support—whether that’s medication,
nutrition, or lifestyle adjustments—we can make
a significant difference to your pet’s comfort and
wellbeing.
time to be proactive. Throughout April, we’re offering
a baseline and pick up early changes.
Early detection can make a profound difference —
both to how long your pet lives, and how well they live.
Community wins
approval for historic
library’s restoration
BY KEES CHALMERS
Four years of work by a
community advocacy group has
paid off, with the restoration
of the earthquake-damaged
Little River Coronation Library
approved on Monday.
The project was signed off at
a Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks
Peninsula Community Board
meeting, following a recommendation
from city council
staff.
Little River Wairewa Community
Trust chair Tori Peden said
the decision was a long time
coming.
“ It’s been a long
time waiting for the
community.
“The trust has put a lot
of time and effort into
what it could look like.
It’s unfortunate we got
delayed by many factors,
but I'm pleased to see
that it's finally getting
over the line.”
The trust has worked in the
background since the library
closed, but serious discussions
about restoration have taken
place over the past four years.
“There’s been a lot of work
around the flood-proneness
of the area, the heritage of the
building and we’ve had to go
Tori Peden
backwards and forwards with
the council a few times to make
sure it is fit for purpose,” she
said.
Peden said the project was
nearly dropped twice by the
city council due to funding
constraints, with the trust
forced to justify both the
building’s historical significance
and the community’s need for
it.
“A lot of work went in around
making sure we could continue
to use the building, I know that
involved many, many hours
and many conversations with
different departments
within council. Then
you’ve got to get the
elected members on
board as well.
“Since then we’ve
had to look at getting
equipment, getting tables
and chairs sorted out
and making sure we’ve
got equipment to use the
space.
“I would honestly hate
to guess (time spent on the
project).”
The trust believed approval
was close two years ago, but
a flood assessment required
a new approach, city council
head of parks Rupert Bool said.
“That was rough on all of us,
The Little River Coronation Library restoration plan was approved on Monday.
having to do all that work to get
it to that point a couple of years
ago and then go back to square
one,” Peden said.
“We’re just pleased to get it
where it is now.”
The trust will hold the
lease and use the building for
meetings, with Peden saying
there is strong interest from
other community groups.
“ The community want the
space because we need it for so
many other projects we’re all
keen to get into,” she said.
The approved restoration will
involve a full rebuild.
Key historic elements will
be carefully deconstructed,
stored and reinstated once new
foundations are complete, Bool
said.
After three major weather
events in the past year, the
building will be raised by 1.1m
to reduce future flood risk.
It will be restored to its
original form, with the addition
of a bathroom and kitchenette.
The project will now move
into procurement. Bool said
costs and timelines will be
confirmed once a contractor is
appointed.
Construction is expected
to start in spring and the
city council has budgeted
$1,426,759 towards the required
restoration work.
Built in 1913 to commemorate
the coronation of King George
V, the library remained in use
as a toy library and community
space until the February 22,
2011 earthquake.
Subsequent engineering
assessments found the building
was at risk of collapse, and it
has been closed to the public
ever since, sitting behind safety
fencing.
Scholarship takes
off after engineer
leaves gift in will
A recently launched scholarship
to provide advanced training
to helicopter medical crews
has been named after a late
Lyttelton marine engineer.
The Jerry Charters
Scholarship for Aeromedical
Advancement is the first of its
kind offered by the Canterbury
West Coast Air Rescue Trust.
It will provide clinicians
working on the Westpac rescue
helicopters opportunities to
get specialist training and
professional development.
Jerry (right) died on April 1
last year aged 80 and left a gift
in his will to the trust.
Said trust fundraising
and development director
Kathryn Marshall: “By
choosing to leave a gift in his
will to the Canterbury West
Coast Air Rescue Trust, Jerry
demonstrated remarkable
generosity.
"This scholarship is a
meaningful way to honour that
generosity and ensure his legacy
continues to make a difference
for generations to come."
Born in England, Jerry loved
his adopted community. He met
his good friend, Paul Tebbutt,
about 35 years ago in a Lyttelton
pub.
Tebbutt described Jerry as
a “real character” who took
friendship seriously and
generously supported the
causes he believed in.
“Jerry would give you the
shirt off his back if he thought
you deserved it,” Tebbutt said.
“He used to talk about the
charities he supported – the
Red Cross, Salvation Army, St
John, and the Westpac rescue
helicopters.”
The scholarship will be
funded for the next three
years after which it is hoped
donations will replenish it.
Said Marshall: “We hope
Jerry’s generosity inspires
others to donate to the fund, so
this scholarship can continue
supporting future generations
of aeromedical professionals
to deliver exceptional care to
those who need it most.”
Oli Aikawa next to his mural at the Sumner Sports Pavilion.
Mural project draws community
into sports pavilion rebuild
A new mural is marking an
important step in the journey
to rebuild the Sumner Sports
Pavilion.
Created by Sumner artist
Oli Aikawa, the large-scale
artwork has been developed
using a 7000-square grid system,
inviting members of the public
to take part in its creation.
“This project is community
action at its finest – every square
tells a story, and together they
make something truly special,”
Aikawa said.
The design draws on Sumner’s
deep connection to the outdoors,
while also reflecting the rugby
and cricket codes that call
the pavilion home. It weaves
together themes of place, people
and participation in a way that
feels distinctly local.
Although currently installed
at the pavilion site, the
artwork is temporary and
will be carefully removed and
incorporated into the new
building once construction is
complete, ensuring it remains
a lasting part of the pavilion’s
future.
The mural can be viewed up
close at the site, with its full
effect best appreciated from
midway down Whitfield St.
Our Lady Star of the Sea School pupils
Saffron Thiele, Ana Sheild, Lucia Immler
and Char Winter working on the mural.
Finding peace after the late shift
At 12:03am, Donna lies in bed
staring at the ceiling. She got home
from her shift 18 minutes ago.
Straight into pyjamas. Lights off.
Everything signals it’s time to sleep.
Except her mind is still in the staff
room, replaying conversations with
patients, wondering if she made the
right calls.
“My body’s home,” the 52-yearold
mental health social worker
explains. “But my brain is still at
work.”
After 25 years in the field, Donna
had earned the right to be excellent
at her job. But after three hours of
broken sleep, she was dragging
herself through shifts. When she
wasn’t working, you’d usually find
her walking, reading, or watching
her grandson playing soccer.
Then the sleep problems crept
in. First she’d lie awake for 30
minutes after late shifts. Then an
hour. Before long, she was watching
entire hours tick past.
“Most people finish at 5pm and
go to bed at 10pm,” she explains.
“That’s five hours to decompress. I
was giving myself 15 minutes.”
The mornings were brutal. “I’d
roll out of bed still exhausted.
Groping my way around and trying
to wake up. Except I hadn’t really
even been asleep.”
Her grandson would ask her to
watch his soccer matches. She’d
nod and then she would spend the
match fighting to keep her eyes
open.
The moment that crystallised
everything: he scored his first goal
of the season. The other parents
were cheering. Donna jolted awake,
realising she’d missed it.
“Did you see it, Nana?” he asked.
“Of course,” she lied.
He looked at her. “You were
asleep, weren’t you?”
He was seven. He shouldn’t have
to track when his grandmother was
too exhausted to watch him play.
Then her sister mentioned Koru
Sleep, a natural supplement made in
New Zealand.
Donna was sceptical. “Working
in mental health, I’d seen every
miracle cure marketed to exhausted
healthcare workers. I thought,
‘Another one promising the earth.’”
But she tried it. Two capsules
when she got home, then 30
minutes to decompress before bed.
“I expected to lie there for two
hours like usual,” she says. “But
within 20 minutes, something felt
different. Not knocked out but just
settled. Like my nervous system
finally got the message that work
was over.”
The blend of passionflower,
magnesium and valerian seemed
to work with her body rather than
against it.
Within a week, she was falling
asleep in 20 to 30 minutes, not
hours. But the real difference was
the mornings.
“I wasn’t groping my way to the
kettle anymore. I’d wake up feeling
like I’d actually slept.”
The real test came at her
grandson’s next match. Donna
watched the full 60 minutes and saw
every moment of his two goals.
“You saw them both, Nana!” he
beamed.
“Every second,” she said. And
she meant it.
“I can be present for my clients,
present for my grandson, present for
my own life. I am so happy to have
my life back.”
SPORT
Sumner look to bounce back after heavy loss
BY KEES CHALMERS
Execution of their set piece and
minimising errors are the key
focuses for Sumner ahead of
Saturday’s clash with Linwood
after a tough start to the season.
New Brighton retained the
Falton Shield on Saturday after
beating Sumner 55-12 in the
annual ‘Battle of the Beaches’
match up.
Sumner coach Gareth
D’Almeida said his side was
disappointed with its season-opening
performance
but is motivated to bounce
back.
“They’re encouraged,
they look back at the footage
and review the game
and realise the areas
they can improve and the
things they can fix,” he
said.
Sumner were left to
rue handling errors and
missed opportunities, with New
Brighton frequently capitalising
and turning them into points.
D’Almeida said they failed
to execute attacking lineouts,
missed kicks for the corner, and
were stripped of the ball in contact
on a number of occasions.
New Brighton scored five
tries in the first half to lead
31-0 at the break, before adding
Gareth
D’Almeida
another four after halftime.
Sumner responded with two
late consolation tries through
loosehead prop Regan Jones
and replacement lock Tuterangi
Stone-Williams in the final 20
minutes.
Despite the heavy defeat,
D’Almeida said he was pleased
with his side’s effort to stay in the
contest.
“It’s a very new team, they’re
only going to get more cohesive
and better as the weeks go on,”
he said.
“There’s certainly no
lack of excitement and
positivity in the group.”
He said there was a clear
experience gap between
the sides, with Sumner
debuting 10 players in
their starting 15.
“It’s very much a new
makeup of a team and
it just takes time to get
to know how each other
plays,” he said.
“When we look across the
fence at the New Brighton side,
it’s a team that’s been together for
quite a while.
“I’m not in any way making
excuses, but I’m being real about
the challenge we faced.”
Defending champs look to build
momentum after opening win
Lyttelton celebrating winning the Metro premier reserve title last year.
BY KEES CHALMERS
Lyttelton will be looking to
continue their strong start to
the season when they host
Canterbury University in their
first home game of the campaign.
The match against UC kicks off
at 1pm at the Lyttelton Recreation
Grounds.
Lyttelton opened
their season with
a 38–17 win over
Ōtautahi on Saturday,
beginning
their bid for backto-back
Metro
premier reserve
titles in positive
fashion.
Head coach Anthony Horan
Anthony Horan
said his side took time to settle.
“Still dusting off the cobwebs
somewhat – we went into halftime
up 19-17. We hadn’t gotten
into our groove and Ōtautahi
played some really good footy.
“Once we got into our shape
and our processes we put them to
bed in the second half.”
He said the win was important
for building early-season confidence
and momentum.
Lyttelton ended a 12-year
title drought last year, defeating
Shirley 32-5 in the final to claim
the premier reserve title.
“We want to have the same
philosophy as last year, where we
don’t really speak about winning
the comp, we just focus on each
week,” Horan said.
“But it’s definitely the goal in
our management and coaching
staff’s mind.”
Horan is aiming to become the
first Lyttelton side to win back-toback
titles.
He said integrating 10 new players
into the squad has been the
biggest challenge so far, particularly
adjusting them to the team’s
systems and structure.
“We’re not just picking up
where we left off, guys are coming
in and are learning the shape
and learning the system, so we’re
starting at square one,” he said.
Horan is looking forward to the
upcoming challenge against UC.
“It’s going to be interesting
to see how we go against a
team that’s well drilled and a lot
younger and have probably more
in the legs.
“We’ll have to be a bit better
with our ball security and be on
our game from the very start.”
Trash or treasure?
As the proverb says, “One man’s trash
be evident at the Redcliffs inaugural
According to the event’s organiser,
sustainability within the community.
“Having lived in Northern New South
Wales some years back we visited the ‘all
town garage sale event’ of quiet rivermouth
town Brunswick Heads,” explains
Wendy. “The community bands together
and puts an ad in the local paper with the
locations of the garage sales, which are
all held concurrently on the same day.
There are buskers and markets held at
the same time and many local businesses
join in with special events themselves.
Twenty-two years on, they’re still doing
this each year and last year they had over
100 households participating. As well as
finding treasure in other people’s trash,
we had a great day out, like so many
others. I came away thinking, “one day,
we’ll do this somewhere” and right now
we just need a good garage sale. Perfect.”
ADVERTISING FEATURE
Designed by architect Tobin Smith (former
Director of CoLab Architecture & now Principal
at Warren & Mahoney) in collaboration with the
current owners, this remarkable four-bedroom
family home was completed in 2015 and
occupies an elevated hillside site with expansive
views over Lyttelton Harbour and the Port Hills.
The house is cleverly positioned at the top of
the site to elevate the building and maximise
both views and sun. The mono pitch roof
follows the slope of the hill and focusses the
southern views whilst drawing sunlight in
through high-level windows to the north.
The long, linear floor plan itself follows a
practical layout. Two bedrooms downstairs,
and two up, with a bathroom on both levels.
The main living areas are on the upper floor,
opening to east and west-facing balconies. A
northern deck retains views through the
transparent living space, offering a yearround
sunny outdoor living option sheltered
from the wind - a rarity in Lyttelton.
The overall design is minimal & contemporary,
with carefully selected materials and fixtures.
The dark-stained cedar exterior recedes into
the hillside and belies the light-filled, open
spaces within. Flooring is wide plank engineered
European oak boards with extensive birch
veneer joinery throughout. Black steel elements
provide contrast to the pale timbers and walls.
An open plan kitchen features integrated
appliances from Fisher & Paykel. Lighting is
from ECC, and heating provided by a heat
pump and Warmington Studio wood fire. All
windows are double-glazed.
Situated on a quiet, neighbourhood lane, the home
feels private and removed. An established garden
wraps the building, and on approach, the house
appears to float above the native plantings.
Just a short stroll to Lyttelton village and its
weekend market, cafés, and vibrant community,
this is a special home on the market for the very
first time.’
MOTORING
Kia’s Tasman making a
big splash in ute market
Kia is backing its new ute, the
Tasman, to successfully enter
uncharted waters and make a
big enough impact to establish
itself as a genuine alternative
to the dominant players in the
market.
It’s a segment the company
has long wanted to crack.
Now, with a strong line-up of
successful models behind it,
Kia’s credibility and sales are at
an all-time high – making this
the ideal time to take that leap.
That leap is helped by a
willingness to be inventive
and bold, stepping away from
traditional ute formulas to offer
something genuinely different.
It achieves this through
purposeful exterior and
interior design, along with
leading technology.
It also hits a home run with
what Kia claims is a best-inclass
1173-litre cargo capacity,
underlining the Tasman’s
practicality and versatility.
Advanced chassis and
suspension technology make it
a far better drive, both on and
off-road, than I was expecting.
So how has Kia managed to
produce such an impressive
first attempt seemingly out of
nowhere?
The short answer is more
than five decades of experience
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
developing special-purpose
vehicles, including off-roaders.
That background has
provided the foundation for
the Tasman to handle the dual
roles of workhorse and leisure
vehicle.
Its bold, and at times
contentious, blocky design
shows Kia has chosen to forge
its own path rather than play it
safe by mimicking rivals.
For now, there is just one
body style – a double cab
wellside – but double and single
cab chassis variants are set to
follow in the coming months.
The current range starts
with the keenly priced $52,690
TX and climbs to $79,690 for
the range-topping X-Pro – a
significant ask for a newcomer
with no track record in this
segment.
In its defence, the X-Pro
delivers superior off-road
performance thanks to 28mm
more ground clearance and
a high level of equipment,
including 18-inch gloss black
alloy wheels fitted with allterrain
tyres.
The model tested here was
the mid-spec TXS, priced at
$62,690.
There is a single engine
option for our market: Kia’s
proven 154kW 2.2-litre turbo
diesel paired with an eightspeed
automatic. It produces
441Nm of torque – less than
many rivals – and doesn’t offer
a huge amount of low-speed
pulling power for a vehicle of
this size and weight.
With many competitors now
pushing 500Nm or more, the
Tasman is slightly off the pace
on paper, reflected in a leisurely
0-100km/h time of 10.4 seconds.
That said, from behind the
wheel it feels quicker than those
figures suggest.
Throttle response and lowspeed
acceleration are adequate,
if not outstanding, while the
smooth-shifting eight-speed
transmission performs well.
Kia has also thought through
the practical details, including
waterproofing key engine
components for water crossings.
The air intake, for example,
is positioned inside the front
fender, allowing the Tasman
to wade through water up to
800mm deep at speeds of up to
7km/h.
Inside, there is generous
space, with ample head and
shoulder room and a classleading
940mm of rear-seat
legroom.
Dual wireless charging pads
and hidden storage bins beneath
the rear seats add a further 33
litres of storage.
Taking centre stage in the
huge cabin is a state-of-the-art
12.3-inch + 5-inch + 12.3-
inch panoramic widescreen
technology that gives the
driver and passenger access to
vehicle controls and advanced
infotainment options.
Rating out of 10: Performance 7, Handling 8, Build Quality 7, Comfort 8, Space
8, Styling 6, Fuel Economy; on road test average consumption 9.8L /100km,
Value for money 7
Safety: ANCAP crash rating, 5 Star, June 2025 testing
Price $62,690.
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
As with other Kia models,
the Tasman incorporates
the brand’s sustainability
initiatives, including bioplastics
in the crash pad, seats
made from recycled PET fabric
and bio-based synthetic leather,
and carpets produced from
recycled materials.
Safety is another strong suit,
with Kia’s latest Advanced
Driver Assistance Systems
(ADAS) on board. Features
include lane keep assist, blind
spot collision warning and
Highway Driving Assist 2
(HDA 2), which also integrates
trailer profile functionality to
improve towing stability and
performance.
A body-on-frame chassis
provides rigidity, stability
and durability, while double
wishbone front suspension
improves ride and handling. At
the rear, a rigid axle with leaf
springs ensures the strength
needed for heavy loads.
The suspension has been
tuned to handle harsh off-road
terrain, but it also performs
impressively on the road.
Long-distance driving is
made more comfortable by
improved sound insulation
and additional wind-sealing,
resulting in a quieter, more
refined cabin with fewer
vibrations.
Despite its size and weight,
the Tasman keeps body roll
well in check. Even when
pushed through tight, twisty
roads or dealing with uneven
surfaces, it remains composed
and predictable.
In fact, it’s one of the bestriding
and best-handling
utes I’ve driven in the past 12
months.
It feels stable and confident
through corners, with
responsive steering that keeps
driver and road well connected.
A brief off-road test hinted at
strong capability, leaving the
impression there is still much
more to explore.
SUPER LONG WEEKENDS.
DHL Super Rugby Pacific – Super Round
One New Zealand Stadium
24-26 April 2026
What is DHL Super Rugby Pacific - Super Round?
Super Round in Christchurch is a three-day festival of rugby over Anzac
weekend at the brand-new One New Zealand Stadium.
The event brings ten DHL Super Rugby Pacific teams together for five
high-stakes matches in one venue, creating a blockbuster long weekend
filled with world-class rugby, live entertainment, and family-friendly
activities. Fans from across New Zealand, Australia, Fiji and the Pacific
converge on Ōtautahi Christchurch to experience the action under the
stadium’s fixed roof, making it a major celebration of sport and the city’s
vibrant atmosphere.
How to get amongst the fun if I don’t have a ticket?
ChristchurchNZ is producing a Live Site on The Terrace next to the Bridge
of Remembrance where all the games will be shown live on a big screen.
There are also signing sessions and other fun activities at the Bridge of
Remembrance.
A Fan Trail along Cashel Street will connect the Live Site with the
Stadium, and you’ll be sure to mix and mingle with fans on the Trail.
The central city will be buzzing with activity over the busy weekend, so
come into the city to be part of the festive atmosphere surrounding the
first major event at the new One New Zealand Stadium.
GETTING THERE
The best way to get to One New Zealand Stadium is on foot from the
central city. Traffic congestion can be heavy, especially during peak
times so plan your trip ahead and allow plenty of time to get to and
from the venue – aiming to arrive at least 45 minutes before kick off.
ON FOOT
The stadium is just 400 metres from the public Bus Interchange and
about an 8-minute walk from The Terrace following a Fan Trail along
Cashel Street. There are pedestrian walkways throughout the Stadium
precinct linking to all streets.
BY BUS
Event Direct by Metro is Christchurch’s new pre-booked shuttle
bus service designed specifically for major events at the stadium. It
provides a reliable, direct transport option for fans attending large
events such as Super Round.
There are 11 well-known, accessible pickup points across Christchurch.
The buses will go directly to Latimer Square (and Ara on Ferry Road for
Sumner/Ferrymead services), with the return journey departing from the
same locations. These locations are both about a 4-minute walk from
the stadium.
BIKE/E‐SCOOTER
Bike racks are available in the stadium precinct. E-scooters from
Flamingo and Lime are available in the city for short commutes to and
from the stadium.
TAXI & RIDESHARE
Taxis and rideshare vehicles will drop off and pick up at designated
zones on Lichfield St just east of the stadium.
BY CAR
During Super Round, the streets immediately surrounding the stadium
will be closed.
There is no onsite parking at the stadium however there are several
public car parks nearby.
Using public transport, bikes and scooters or taxi and
ride-share options will be the most efficient options.
MORE INFO
AND TICKETS
Event Direct by Metro bookings are essential.
Scan the code to plan your trip.
Metro will also run all standard bus routes on normal timetables
throughout Super Round weekend.
