Stolen four times
Aqua may now be
at end of the road
BY DANIEL ALVEY
When Archna Tandon got a 4am
phone call from the police to
let her know her car had been
stolen, it came as no surprise.
It was the fourth time her
2014 silver Toyota Aqua had
been taken over the past three
years from outside their home.
The Aqua was stolen after
10pm on Good Friday. It was
found abandoned in Hornby.
“They called and asked if I
had my car, and went
and checked, and it was
gone,” she said.
“It did not surprise me
that it had been stolen
again.”
While the car has
survived its previous
three joyrides, it may be
the end of the road this
time.
Her insurance company
has indicated it may be
written off due to the damage to
the front of the car, wheel, and
ignition.
Tandon said the first two
times the car was stolen it was
found abandoned, on the third
occasion police pulled it over in
Lincoln and arrested the youths
inside.
In recent years, Toyota Aquas
have been the most stolen
vehicle in New Zealand.
AMI Insurance data shows
they are disproportionately
targeted, with a theft rate nearly
four times that of the country’s
most insured vehicle, the Toyota
Corolla.
AMI Insurance said it received
more than 9000 vehicle theft and
attempted theft claims in 2025.
Aquas made up 8% of all
stolen vehicle claims, it said,
followed by Corollas at 7%
and Nissan Tiidas at 6%.
For every 1000 insured
Aquas, 54 had a theft claim,
compared with 15 per 1000
Corollas.
Tandon's husband,
Surinder, said it was
frustrating each time the
Aqua was stolen, the car’s
insurance premium had
increased, and they had to
pay the excess.
“We don’t get any kind of
compensation for that from the
people who take the car,” he
said.
Toyota Aquas with traditional
keys are often targeted by
thieves because they are quick
and easy to steal.
Models with push-button
start systems are generally less
vulnerable.
Archna Tandon’s 2014 Toyota Aqua was
left battered and bruised after its latest
joyride – the fourth in three years.
Surinder said before the car
was stolen this time, he was in
the process of getting quotes to
have the ignition switched from
a key to a push button.
“I was in the process of getting
switched over. They clearly
knew what they were doing
because my Toyota Camry,
which was parked next to it, was
not touched.”
A police spokesperson said
inquiries into the latest theft are
ongoing.
New fast-spreading ‘Super-k’ flu strain nears our shores
The health system is preparing
for a potentially difficult winter
flu season, as the H3N2 Subclade
K (Super-k) influenza virus
heads for New Zealand’s shores.
The variant spread across the
US and Europe last year, has
already arrived in Australia, and
is spreading faster than typical
seasonal influenza, according
to its national science agency
CSIRO.
University Otago Professor and
head of the department of Paediatrics
and Child Health Peter
McIntyre said Super-k did not
seem to be any more severe than
historic flu strains, but it was less
well-matched to the vaccine.
The virus had actually already
arrived in the country towards
the tail-end of the 2025 flu season,
McIntyre said.
Fortunately, those who were
formulating this years’ flu vaccine
had included a similar
strain, which would make it
much more effective than the
protections the northern hemisphere
had, he added.
The cycle of respiratory
viruses like the flu was becoming
less predictable post-Covid-19.
“The way flu strains work
during the year has changed a
bit from the predictable winter
peak with not much going on in
the rest of the year, to a lot more
unpredictability,” McIntyre said.
Although the vaccine provided
limited protection against Superk,
those most at risk should get
vaccinated early, he said.
“For those who are at higher
risk of complications from the
flu, which is anyone over the
age of 65 – particularly those
over the age of 75 or 80 – it’s a
very good idea to get in right
now with your flu vaccine,
because the season may be with
us sooner than we think.”
Another option, the Fluad vaccine,
was more effective, but it
was currently not funded in New
Zealand, McIntyre said.
“There are good arguments in
favour of it, and the immunisation
advisory centre has been
lobbying for this for a while.
“Particularly for our most frail
elderly – so people in residential
aged care who are most at risk
of severe flu, I think there’s a
very good case for funding it,
but at this stage it hasn’t got high
enough on the Pharmac wish
list.” – RNZ
across the US and Europe last year,
and has already arrived in Australia.
Trainer ‘lucky to be alive’
after Addington accident
BY DAVE DI SOMMA
Veteran trainer Bruce Negus
wants his close call to serve as a
reminder to others.
The 73-year-old is facing a
six-to eight-week recovery
after being seriously injured at
Addington Raceway on Easter
Saturday.
Negus was taking two horses
off a float when one of them
“took fright and pulled me
over”.
“I’m lucky to be alive.”
He has no recollection of the
accident, but his injuries show
his head, knee and hand took
the impact.
Although badly banged up,
he has since been cleared of
concussion, undergone surgery
on his hand, and was left with
11 fractured ribs.
Despite the injuries, Negus
said he is feeling “pretty good”
and has returned to light duties
around his farm after being
discharged from Christchurch
Hospital last Wednesday.
In hindsight, Negus said
the accident could have been
avoided if he had unloaded one
horse at a time.
“It was avoidable if I had just
slowed down a bit and asked
for some help.
“I’ve prided myself on being
the one not getting injured.”
Horse trainer Bruce Negus is on light duties after being seriously injured while unloading horses at Addington Raceway.
PHOTO: DANIEL ALVEY
He said the incident was a
reminder of the risks involved
when working with horses.
It is Negus’ second serious
accident in more than four
decades of training horses.
“I got kicked in the head 25-30
years ago.”
Negus also thanked the many
well-wishers who have been in
contact, as well as those helping
out during the enforced lay-off.
Council tells group wanting to
restore historic stables to go alone
BY KEES CHALMERS
A plan to redevelop the
Lyttelton Borough Council
stables into an artistic haven
will not be impacted by an
absence of city council funding,
says project lead Paul Dietsche.
The city council has told Te
Pataka o Rakaihautu Banks
Peninsula Community Board
there is no funding available to
repair the stables.
Dietsche had put a proposal
for the future of the stables
to the community board in
December.
The cost
to repair the
building was
estimated to be
$3.4 million in
2024.
Dietshe
wants to turn
the stables on Paul Dietsche
Donald St into
a functional creative hub for
artists, musicians, designers
and community groups.
He went into the project not
expecting city council to fund
the project and is looking to
use a similar method to the
Governors Bay Jetty rebuild.
The city council sold the jetty
to the Governors Bay Jetty
restoration Trust for $1, which
then raised the funding.
A community initiative is looking to restore the Lyttelton Borough Council stables to its former glory by turning it into a
haven for local artists.
"(We’ll) have the council sell
it to us for a dollar, we pursue
the repairs through private
means, then when it's all up
and running, we could sell it
back to the council for them to
maintain it,” he said.
"We’re going to continue
to pursue it, whether the
council’s going to fund it or
not, it’s not a big deal.”
The heritage building, built
in 1914, was severely damaged
in the 2011 earthquakes and
became unsafe to occupy. It has
remained empty and unused
since.
Dietsche had a walk through
of the stables last week with
the project’s technical team and
Lyttelton Harbour Business
Association chair Sabrina
Saunders.
"We came away from that
thinking the conditions
certainly need some work but
there’s nothing here that’s
insurmountable,” he said.
City council will be covering
holes in the roof and securing
the building next week.
Dietsche is now waiting on
formal agreements with the
project’s technical team to be
finalised.
The group will then put
together a plan to submit to
potential partners.
Dietsche has received
expressions of interest in using
the space from 21 individuals
and groups.
City council’s cost estimate
comes from ChristchurchNZ’s
proposed high end
redevelopment of the stables in
2024, which included hospitality
outlets, visitor accommodation,
an entertainment venue,
community spaces and terraced
housing.
The agency has not worked
on the project since.
Dietsche wants to retain
the building’s stripped back
and historic look, which he
said would bring down the
cost significantly and make it
affordable for Lyttelton artists
to use.
"I don't think it would be
something that really local
Lyttelton artists and musicians
would want. I think it's more
of a rough and rugged feel,” he
said.
Finding peace after the late shift
At 12:03am, Donna lies in bed
staring at the ceiling. She got home
from her shift 18 minutes ago.
Straight into pyjamas. Lights off.
Everything signals it’s time to sleep.
Except her mind is still in the staff
room, replaying conversations with
patients, wondering if she made the
right calls.
“My body’s home,” the 52-yearold
mental health social worker
explains. “But my brain is still at
work.”
After 25 years in the field, Donna
had earned the right to be excellent
at her job. But after three hours of
broken sleep, she was dragging
herself through shifts. When she
wasn’t working, you’d usually find
her walking, reading, or watching
her grandson playing soccer.
Then the sleep problems crept
in. First she’d lie awake for 30
minutes after late shifts. Then an
hour. Before long, she was watching
entire hours tick past.
“Most people finish at 5pm and
go to bed at 10pm,” she explains.
“That’s five hours to decompress. I
was giving myself 15 minutes.”
The mornings were brutal. “I’d
roll out of bed still exhausted.
Groping my way around and trying
to wake up. Except I hadn’t really
even been asleep.”
Her grandson would ask her to
watch his soccer matches. She’d
nod and then she would spend the
match fighting to keep her eyes
open.
The moment that crystallised
everything: he scored his first goal
of the season. The other parents
were cheering. Donna jolted awake,
realising she’d missed it.
“Did you see it, Nana?” he asked.
“Of course,” she lied.
He looked at her. “You were
asleep, weren’t you?”
He was seven. He shouldn’t have
to track when his grandmother was
too exhausted to watch him play.
Then her sister mentioned Koru
Sleep, a natural supplement made in
New Zealand.
Donna was sceptical. “Working
in mental health, I’d seen every
miracle cure marketed to exhausted
healthcare workers. I thought,
‘Another one promising the earth.’”
But she tried it. Two capsules
when she got home, then 30
minutes to decompress before bed.
“I expected to lie there for two
hours like usual,” she says. “But
within 20 minutes, something felt
different. Not knocked out but just
settled. Like my nervous system
finally got the message that work
was over.”
The blend of passionflower,
magnesium and valerian seemed
to work with her body rather than
against it.
Within a week, she was falling
asleep in 20 to 30 minutes, not
hours. But the real difference was
the mornings.
“I wasn’t groping my way to the
kettle anymore. I’d wake up feeling
like I’d actually slept.”
The real test came at her
grandson’s next match. Donna
watched the full 60 minutes and saw
every moment of his two goals.
“You saw them both, Nana!” he
beamed.
“Every second,” she said. And
she meant it.
“I can be present for my clients,
present for my grandson, present for
my own life. I am so happy to have
my life back.”
‘It 100 percent saved our lives
there’s no question about that’
BY KEES CHALMERS
That is what relieved Ōtoromiro
Hotel resident Emily Banfield
said about the establishment’s
fire alarm system, which was
put to the test after a deep frier
caught fire.
Banfield has lived on site for
the past year with her partner
in an upstairs flat of the hotel in
Governors Bay. She also serves as
the building’s fire warden.
They were woken at 12.10am
last Tuesday by the burglar
alarm, followed 30 seconds later
by the fire alarm.
The hotel’s security and emergency
system is very sensitive
and is activated at the slightest
detection of motion.
Banfield got out of bed and
headed downstairs to deactivate
the alarms, thinking it was
a false alarm. As she went down
the stairs she saw orange flames
in the kitchen through a cubby
hole.
“I quickly ran back upstairs
. . . and I said ‘the kitchen's on
fire’, then (my partner) quickly
put his contact lenses in and
came downstairs,” Banfield said.
She rang 111 before calling the
hotel’s owner, Jeremy Dyer, who
lives off-site. The fire alarm system
also automatically alerted
the Governors Bay Volunteer
The fire-damaged kitchen inside the Ōtoromiro Hotel.
Brigade. She then
stepped in to her
fire warden role
and went through
the evacuation
process.
She checked the
building for other
occupants but
found there were
Jeremy Dyer
no guests staying that night.
The fire had reached the
kitchen roof and smoke had
started to spread up stairs by the
time her partner came downstairs
with a fire extinguisher.
He blasted it once, which did
little to dull the flames.
Said Banfield: “By that point
I was starting to feel a little bit
panicked, I could tell the colour,
the bright orange of the flames,
meant that it wasn’t a joke.
“I think it would be a very different
story if they didn’t have
this incredible fire alarm system.
It was definitely pretty scary.
“It 100 percent saved our lives
there’s no question about that.”
Her partner blasted the fire
again, which managed to extinguish
the flames, leaving a long
black mark on the wall. No other
damage was caused. Volunteer
firefighters arrived soon after.
The fire was caused by a
bench-top deep fryer, which
is meant to turn itself off after
a certain amount of time, but
failed to do so.
Dyer said the issue had been
overlooked when the hotel was
closed on Monday.
He said $500,000 had been
invested into the hotel’s
type 4 fire alarm system over
the past 10 years, with heat
and smoke detectors installed
throughout the hotel.
“The impact of the fire could
have been much, much worse
had the system not worked,” said
Dyer.
Banfield said every other
time the fire alarms had been
activated they were false alarms.
Fire chief Doug Burt said the
outcome could have been far
worse had Banfield’s partner not
pro-actively extinguished the
fire.
Said Banfield: “He’ll hate to
admit it, he will play it down as
much as he can but he absolutely
saved the day.
“I feel grateful it wasn’t any
worse than what it was, but it’s
definitely a bit of an eye-opener.
You hear about people dying in
house fires and quite often you
scratch your head and think
how? But that gave me a firsthand
taste of how it can happen
so easily.”
Super Rugby fan zone
planned with big screen
The excitement of the first
major event at the new stadium
will overflow into a new live
fan zone area in the central city.
Fans can watch all five Super
Rugby Pacific Super Round
games to be played at One New
Zealand Stadium from April
24-26 for free at the new 'Live
Site' on The Terrace.
The fan zone on the banks
of the Avon/Ōtākaro just north
of the Bridge of Remembrance
will also host the 10 teams for
signing sessions over Anzac
weekend.
The site is being organised
by ChristchurchNZ and Super
Rugby Pacific.
“Super Round is more than
just the five matches at One
New Zealand Stadium - it is a
festival of rugby and fun that
will spill into the streets of the
central city,” says ChristchurchNZ
head of major events
Karena Finnie.
A 'Fan Trail' will run from the
Live Site to One New Zealand
Stadium at Te Kaha. The eightminute
walk is designed to give
people a taste of the festival-like
atmosphere of the matches at
One New Zealand Stadium.
Buskers, dancers and musicians
will feature along the
route, which runs from the
Bridge of Remembrance along
City Mall and Cashel St to the
stadium.
“The Live Site and Fan Trail
will help bring more people into
the city and give visitors and
locals alike more opportunities
to experience the excitement
and energy of the first major
event surrounding the city’s
new stadium,” says Finnie.
The Fan Trail will be filled
with entertainment from twoand-a-half
hours before kick-off
each day.
Finnie says the Super Round
is projected to attract about
13,500 visitors to Christchurch,
who will bring about $6 million
in visitor spending to the city
over the long weekend.
Organisers have asked people
to plan their travel into the city
ahead of time, as it is expected
to be busy.
Information about travel
options is available at
www.christchurchnz.com
The site will also be used to
show the Supercars racing at
Ruapuna from tomorrow to
Sunday.
Crusaders’ scratch
horses from stadium
Horses will no longer feature at
the Crusaders' home games.
The defending Super Rugby
champions have made the
decision to bring an end to the
pre-match ritual after moving
their home games from Apollo
Projects Stadium
to the new One
New Zealand
Stadium.
Crusaders
chief executive
Colin Mansbridge
said while
the horses have
been "muchloved
by our fans
and a symbolic
Colin
Mansbridge
part of the Crusaders matchday
for many years" they cannot
be safely accommodated at the
new stadium.
"With limited space around
the field, the six horses would
not have been able to avoid the
playing surface, compromising
their own safety, the condition
of the turf and creating potential
injury risks for players and
others in the venue.
"One New Zealand Stadium is
a $672 million, multi-use venue
built for the whole community.
This is not a venue built solely
for the Crusaders. It's designed
to bring crowds closer to the
action across sport and live
entertainment and while that
vision has been achieved, it represents
a significant shift from
previous venues used by the
Crusaders."
The six horses represented
the six provincial unions of the
top of the South Island: Tasman,
Buller, West Coast, South Canterbury,
Mid Canterbury and
Canterbury.
The horses and riders have
been part of the pre-match
entertainment at Crusaders
home games since Super Rugby
started in 1996.
Mansbridge said it was a
tough call to make.
Selling public assets to fund historic buildings
The drum is beating to sell
city-council owned broadband
company Enable to help pay
for the rebuild of Christ Church
Cathedral and other historic
buildings.
The sale could mean a
$1.2 billion windfall for
the city council.
Businessman Humphry
Rolleston has told the city
council he supports the
rebuilding and reinstatement
of the cathedral,
Canterbury Museum,
Canterbury Provincial
Chambers and the Arts
Centre.
However, he warned
against relying on rates and
instead proposed selling council-owned
Enable for about $1.2
billion to bankroll the projects
at the Annual Plan hearing last
week.
The proposal to sell Enable Networks for
$1.2 billion – using the proceeds to repay
debt and fund a heritage trust – deserves
much closer scrutiny than it is currently
receiving.
Selling Enable now would be like a
farmer selling his best breeding stock to
pay off the loan on a tractor; the debt vanishes,
but so does the future income.
Enable is a Christchurch success story.
Its financial metrics rival some of the best
tech companies globally. To understand
why we should keep it, we must look at
“Free Cash Flow” – the cash left over after
the business pays for its operations and
infrastructure. This is the money available
to pay dividends back to the council to
keep our rates down.
Humphrey
Rolleston
Ratepayers face a decision
on whether to increase rates
to help fund heritage rebuilds,
including the cathedral, which
has a funding shortfall of about
$40 million.
Rolleston told
councillors his plan
would see $500 million
used to repay council
debt, with the remaining
$700m used to establish a
Christchurch Restoration
Trust.
Rolleston said the fund
could generate about
$42m a year, with about
$35m each year directed
toward restoring the four
heritage buildings over the next
12 to 15 years.
He believed a restoration
fund could be set up and fully
operational by the end of the
year.
Why not to sell
Enable’s free cash flow has surged
from $6 million in 2020 to nearly $35 million
in 2025 – a 465% increase. Enable’s
Statement of Intent says by 2027 the
company is projected to return a $25
million dividend and repay $15.5 million
in loans. This suggests free cash flow
generation of over $45 million in just one
year's time.
Infrastructure assets have a "build"
phase and a "maintenance" phase. A
large amount of the heavy lifting of digging
trenches and laying fibre has been
HAVE YOUR SAY: Tell us in 200 words or less if publicly owned assets like
Enable should be sold to rebuild historic buildings like the cathedral. Email
“I think this is an elegant and
simple financial solution that
will enable us as council to
done. As we move into the maintenance
stage, investment costs drop, income
continues to grow, and the cash available
for the city increases. It is entirely
conceivable that Enable could generate
$60 million in free cash flow within five
years.
To put that in perspective, every $8
million in dividends equates to a 1%
reduction in rates. Retaining Enable
could eventually provide the council with
a lever to reduce rates by 7.5% annually.
Why would we trade this permanent,
restore the buildings without
calling on direct rate-paying
support,” he told councillors.
growing revenue stream for a one-off
payout?
While we all want to see our heritage
buildings restored, we must be realistic.
The insurance payouts were inadequate,
and we are now paying the price. Instead
of selling a cash generating asset to
fund expensive restorations, we should
explore other alternatives. These could
include prioritising projects, reduced
scope, deferment, and look at other
areas of council expenditures such as
expensive cycle ways and street scaping.
Another alternative may be “living
ruins” — a concept used successfully in
Europe after WWII where damaged sites
were stabilised as gardens, markets
and entertainment spaces. This creates
Christchurch Central Business
Association’s Annabel Turley
said the council needed to draw
a clear line between essential
spending and “nice to have”
projects and apply stronger
financial discipline on councilfunded
organisations and
projects that did not show clear
economic returns.
While they had concerns with
the museum and arts centre
project, she believed council
needed to act urgently around
the cathedral.
She suggested a tax collected
in airports to help fund it.
A resident, Matthew Clayton,
spoke in opposition to the
cathedral restoration, saying it
was time for the council to say
“enough is enough”, arguing
public money should not
continue flowing into a private
organisation.
vibrant social hubs without the astronomical
price tag of full reconstruction.
With 186,000 ratepayers already struggling
under a 63% rate increase since
2020, we must "cut our cloth" accordingly.
We have already spent millions
on the stadium, recreation centre, town
hall, convention centre, and other lesser
projects.
In the infrastructure world, the
greatest returns are not made while
you’re digging the trenches; they’re
made when the digging stops and
the connections stay active. Selling
Enable now is not just premature — it’s
a mistake Christchurch may regret for
decades.
Clearwater’s
changing
of the guard
A property described as one of
Clearwater’s best goes up for
auction today.
The grand five-bedroom,
five-bathroom home has a
$4.83 million RV and sweeping
views across the lake to the golf
course.
The house at 17 Mayfly Lane,
on the market for the first time,
was designed by Mason & Wales
Architects and built by Clive
Barrington for the vendors in
2004. The brief was to create a
home that could accommodate
three generations (it comes
with a wing for the vendors’
grandmother).
Ray White listing agent Chris
Nielsen told OneRoof: “It’s done
its job and done what it was
designed for. They (clients)
love Clearwater, so I sold them
another section in Clearwater so
they’re building a smaller home.
“It’s actually a problem we
have in Clearwater. We’ve got
all these people who want to
stay here, but all the smaller
(housing) options are all three
levels.
“Two-bedroom villas are
over three levels, and 80-yearolds
aren’t going to move into
a three-level if they don’t have
to.”
Clearwater began in the
mid-1990s when the land was
bought by Japanese interests.
It was later developed by golf
course designer John Darby
and philanthropist Lady Diana
Isaac. The spring-fed lakes were
dug out and sections built up in
between. Around 215 properties
were built, including the hotel
villas and apartments, with
111 residential entitlements
for larger homes on generous
sections.
Sir Bob Charles designed the
golf course. He also lives in
Mayfly Lane.
While Clearwater is
synonymous with golf, Nielsen
said only 30% of residents were
members of the Clearwater Golf
Club.
“Not everyone goes there
for the golf. I think people just
love it because all of the homes
face towards the reserves or
the water, so you’ve always got
lakes in front of you and lots of
bird life,” he told One Roof.
Buyers often come from
Merivale and Fendalton, or
from farming backgrounds.
The five-bedroom house at Clearwater has sweeping views across the lake to the golf course.
“I’ve found a number
of farmers have moved to
Clearwater over the years,”
Nielsen said.
“They don’t want to look
after a farm anymore, but they
still want that outlook – they
don’t want to be hemmed in by
six-foot fences.”
With many of the original
homes built by people in their
50s and 60s, a “changing of
the guard” is underway, said
Nielsen. He was targeting
buyers from Auckland and
Queenstown. People from
Queenstown might like the
golfing lifestyle, he said, while
buyers from Auckland could get
a lot more for their money.
There had also been online
interest from overseas, with
potential for the property to
be sold to “golden visa” buyers
who can now buy properties
worth over $5m.
Nielsen has been speaking
with private bankers and
immigration agents, and said
a New Zealand agent based in
Dubai had also been through
the property, One Roof reported.
“From the sound of it, there
are plenty of conversations
going on with her and her
clients. You know, what are the
possibilities, because if Dubai no
longer feels safe, then where’s
the next best place?”
Passenger
numbers
flying high
BY TIM CRONSHAW
Funding row over unfinished
business on Coastal Pathway
Overseas passenger traffic
has picked up at Christchurch
Airport this summer to generate
$860 million to the South Island
economy.
International visitors were up
22% on last year at the airport,
with 287,000 overseas arrivals
among 3.1 million passengers
landing at the airport between
November and March.
Australian travellers led the
way with 112,600 arrivals, followed
by China with 38,400.
Chinese visitors more
than doubled from last
season, driven by increased
China Southern flights from
Guangzhou and changes to
visa settings allowing them
to visit New Zealand using an
Australian visa.
Visitor numbers from Japan,
Canada, Hong Kong, Malaysia,
Singapore, Australia and the
United Kingdom had double
figure increases.
The airport calculated their
overall economy injection
based on ministry figures and
an average spend of $3000 per
visitor.
Passenger growth is being
credited to strong global
demand for Christchurch and
the South Island, combined
with a lift in airline capacity for
more flights, larger aircraft, and
extended seasonal services.
City council staff and the Coastal
Pathway Group are at odds over
whether the 6.3km trail from
Ferrymead to Sumner Beach is
finished.
Group treasurer Tim Lindley
and chair Hanno Sander have
asked for the original $720,000
budget, set aside in the council’s
three-year capital plan for
2027/28, to be reinstated after it
was cut to $120,000 in the draft
Annual Plan 2026/27.
They also want $360,000
brought forward into this year’s
Annual Plan to allow planning to
start for two stopping platforms
with wind shelters along the
Moncks Bay causeway.
City council acting planning
delivery transport manager Matt
Goldring said the reduced budget
reflects the project’s current
stage.
“The budget was reduced to
reflect that the project is now in
the defects liability period and
funding is no longer required
to deliver the approved project
scope,” he said.
“As all scope has been completed,
the remaining budget
is proposed to be removed
through the Annual Plan change
and reprioritised in line with
the council’s overall funding
approach.”
the pathway is down that the
job is finished, when there are
still other needs to be met to
make it work
better.”
He said
stopping
platforms are the
most commonly
requested
addition from
pathway users,
although
feedback so
far has been
informal.
Nathaniel Herz
Jardine
Heathcote ward councillor
Nathaniel Herz Jardine said he
was initially supportive of the
proposal, but has since heard
opposition from some residents.
“ I’m going to the Coastal
Pathway (group) and asking
them ‘can you actually provide
this feedback? What does it
actually look like? What sort of
surveys have you done?’,” he
said.
“Then I can get a really clear
sense of what they’re actually
talking about when people say
they want this.
“ I just want to make sure
there’s actually support for it in
the community before I fight for
it in the Annual Plan process.”
The Coastal Pathway opened
in November 2023 at a cost of
$26.25 million.
Why ANZAC still matters
ANZAC Day in 2026 arrives in a world that feels
less certain than it has for decades. For most
New Zealanders, war has been something studied
in classrooms or remembered through family
stories rather than lived experience. We are
generations removed from the mud of Gallipoli
and the battlefields of Europe and the Pacific. Yet
recent events including the escalating conflict in
the Middle East are a stark reminder that peace is
never guaranteed.
That war, unfolding far from our shores, is already
being felt here at home. Disruptions to global oil
supply have pushed up fuel prices and the cost of
living, while supply chains and trade routes have
come under pressure. Around a fifth of the world’s
oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz, making
instability there a direct economic risk to New
Zealand households and businesses.
This shifting reality sharpens the relevance of
ANZAC Day. It is no longer only a commemoration
of the past; it is a moment to reflect on the
fragility of the present. The freedoms we enjoy
were secured at immense cost by ordinary
New Zealanders placed in extraordinary
circumstances. Their service was not abstract. It
was immediate, personal, and often devastating.
For younger Kiwis especially, ANZAC Day has
evolved. Attendance at dawn services is no
longer driven solely by direct family connections.
• Advocate
Instead, it reflects a broader sense of national
identity and shared responsibility.
As the generation with living memory fades, it is
up to us to carry those stories forward.
Recent commemorations have greater recognition
of the contributions of Māori servicemen, of
nurses, of those who served in conflicts beyond
the World Wars, and of the lasting impact on
returned servicemen and women.
ANZAC Day now speaks not only to courage in
battle, but also to resilience and service.
In a time of renewed global tension, ANZAC Day
carries a quiet warning. It reminds us what
happens when diplomacy fails, when conflict
escalates, and when the burden ultimately falls on
ordinary people, whether on distant battlefields
or here at home through rising costs and
uncertainty.
I look forward to being at Cathedral Square for
the Dawn Service. We do not gather on ANZAC Day
to glorify war. We gather to remember its cost,
to honour those who bore it, and to recommit
ourselves to peace.
Lest we forget.
Bus lanes and
those towies
Starnews Facebook readers respond to last week’s article on cars
being towed away for parking in bus lanes
Do the crime pay the fine. It isn’t
rocket science. The signage is
clear.
- Mark Alexander
I remember when I worked on
Lincoln Road, this was my afternoon
entertainment. They've
been doing this for years. You
would think people would learn
lol.
- Aidan Mcintyre-brill
Riccarton Rd and Lincoln Rd
are the best money makers.
- Chris Mckeown
It’s great to see the cars are
being towed. However, I’m
not sure why the same isn’t
being enforced on Riccarton
Rd especially outside the dairy,
vape shop, liquor store, and
gym.
- Roya Tuinukuafe
There are literally nearly 30
signs along each side of Lincoln
Rd stating when the bus lane is
operational! If you're an idiot who
doesn't read the signs, then you
deserve to be ticketed and towed!
- Sue Wright
People need to be more aware.
There are far too many entitled
drivers who think the rules don't
apply to them. Bus lanes are there
to keep traffic moving, yet everyone
seems to act like they’re the
one being hard done by.
- Kim Stewart
It’s clearly signposted. Honestly,
some need to learn the road rules.
They have changed somewhat
since some people sat their
licence.
- Wendy Martin
Just a money making racket.
- Thelma Campbell
Stupid place for bus lanes.
Has done nothing but cause
more congestion and with the
new bus lanes down Halswell
Rd, will have the same effect
especially on the side streets at
peak school time traffic.
How stupid was it to take
away right turning into and out
of Tankerville Rd. These street
designers are really missing
some serious screws.
- Andre Green
They need to do it more often!
- Selina McLeod
Bus lanes are about the only
places left to park these days.
- Brent Howard
Years ago we had tow away
zones in many streets in the city.
They were designed to allow peak
hour traffic to flow efficiently,
safely and economically. They
worked well – well sign posted
and very few tows.
Now, we have reduced speed
limits, narrowed streets, light
phasing issues and raised
platforms, all to slow traffic
down.
So towing vehicles to remove
the obstacle to free flowing traffic
seems a contradiction ? Just my
thoughts.
- Lindsay Winchester
10 mins to tow a car. Not very
efficient are they. Repo guys in
the US swipe a car in 10 seconds
and drive away.
- Vanessa Penelope
They sit down the road, and
even just stopping to answer a
call within seconds they are right
there banging on the windows.
Surely there’s a rule they can’t
dog a road the way the do.
- Brock Toomey
The most stupid idea was to not
four lane it through to Halswell
instead of a stupid bus lane.
How best to choke a road by
not using it fully. If you’re going to
take a bus you’re on the bus not in
a car. Ban bus lanes.
The Way
Charles Blondin photographed by Dr AC Barker in Christchurch in 1876, alongside an earlier image of Blondin performing on
THIS WEEK IN HISTORY
April 12-19
City visited by Blondin
On April 13, 1876, one of the 19th century’s most daring showmen. Charles
Blondin — world famous for crossing Niagara Falls on a tightrope — brought his
extraordinary act to Christchurch, captivating local audiences with a spectacle
unlike anything they had seen before.
To accommodate the crowds, a massive big top known as the Mammoth Arena
was erected on a paddock at the edge of town on Cashel St. Built using around
500 wooden poles, each about 16 metres long, the structure was an engineering
feat in itself.
Suspended on a tightrope about 15m above the audience, Blondin demonstrated
remarkable skill and composure. He crossed the wire in a suit of armour,
blindfolded, inside a sack, on his hands, and even on a bicycle. In one of his most
memorable feats, he paused mid-air to cook an omelette and drink a glass of
champagne, all while balancing on the high wire. While Blondin remained calm and
controlled, the crowd below was gripped by a mix of excitement and terror.
Born Jean-François Gravelet and nicknamed “Blondin” for his fair hair and
beard, he had shown exceptional talent as an acrobat from a young age. His
Christchurch performances reflected the same daring precision that had made
him a global sensation.
First meeting of the National Council of Women
On April 13, 1896, the National Council of Women of New Zealand (Te
Kaunihera Wāhine o Aotearoa) was established in Christchurch, just three
years after New Zealand women won the right to vote. Its founding conference
brought together 25 women representing 11 different societies, who met at the
Provincial Council Buildings to create a unified voice for women
nationwide. Representing the Canterbury Women’s Institute,
Kate Sheppard, pictured, was elected as the council’s first
president.
Often referred to as the “Women’s Parliament,” the
organisation quickly became a powerful advocate for reform.
It campaigned for women’s right to stand for Parliament, equal
pay for work of equal value, economic independence, and legal
equality in areas such as marriage, divorce, and employment.
It also pushed for better protections for low-paid workers, reflecting its broader
commitment to social justice.
The council’s founding aims were ambitious: To unite women’s organisations
for co-operation and mutual support, to encourage the formation of groups across
trades, professions, and public life, and to connect with international councils
to promote global collaboration. Its first office holders included several leading
figures of the suffrage movement. Alongside Sheppard, vice-presidents included
Marion Hatton, Annie Schnackenberg, Margaret Sievwright, and Anna Stout. Ada
Wells served as secretary, while Wilhelmina Sherriff Bain was treasurer.
More than a century later, the National Council of Women continues to
advocate for gender equality, maintaining its role as a leading voice for women’s
rights in New Zealand.
‘Bam Bam’ boost for Tigers in top grade return
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Papanui Tigers will be boosted
by veteran front-rower Chris
Bamford as they return to the
top flight for the first time since
2022.
“I always liked the underdogs,
and passing on what I’ve
learned, my knowledge of the
game,” Bamford said.
“The team’s definitely got a lot
of growth in it, and the boys are
willing to learn, they’re keen, so
I’m looking forward to the year.”
Bamford, now 42, said he felt
he would add a lot to a Papanui
team that will be up against
it facing the more established
teams in the competition.
“I suppose I bring that knowledge,
that experience, probably
that old school mentality, mental
toughness. I bring a lot of stuff
that some people probably don’t
have. Young ones don’t have
that mental toughness, you can’t
teach it,” he said.
Tigers head coach Ray
Hubbard said Bamford, a former
New Zealand Residents and
Canterbury Bulls player, would
bring both experience and
impact to a Papanui side eager
to make its mark.
“Chris is a formidable player.
He stands about 6’3, 6’4, and
is very powerful, very fast.
And what he’s got between the
ears in terms of his football
experience and knowledge is
really valuable for us.”
Bamford is under an injury
cloud for Saturday’s opener
against Eastern Eagles after
tweaking his hamstring in a
Tech running
hot ahead
of key clash
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Southern League frontrunners
Cashmere Technical head into
Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash
with Dunedin’s Northern AFC in
red-hot form after four straight
wins.
Tech stayed unbeaten with a 9-0
away win over Wānaka AFC on
Saturday, powered by four goals
from Garbhan Coughlan and a
hat-trick from Zander Edwards.
Northern also impressed, edging
Nelson Suburbs 2-1.
Christchurch United will look
to bounce back from a shaky start
to the season when they host
Wānaka, following a 1-0 loss to
Ferrymead Bays on Friday.
Bays sit level on points with
Northern after four rounds, with
their only defeat coming against
Tech two weeks ago. They travel
to face Coastal Spirit on Sunday,
with Spirit’s title defence off to
a difficult start after a 3-2 loss to
Nomads head to Dunedin to
Selwyn United picked up their
pre-season trial. He will put
himself through a fitness test at
training tonight to see if he can
play.
“I don't want to be held back
by injury, but I don’t want to
disappoint the boys. If I can’t
play, I’ll probably run water
and lay the law down, spread
the messages.”
Hubbard said he had enjoyed
the challenge of rebuilding
the club’s premier side after
joining from Halswell Hornets
in December.
Christchurch head coach
Riki Tahere wants his side to
use their opening-round win
over High School Old Boys as
a platform for the rest of the
season.
Christchurch began their
campaign on a high with a 21-10
victory – a significant result
for a team that had managed
just three regular-season wins
across the past three years.
“It’s super pleasing. The boys
enjoyed the celebrations and
just seeing their
faces at the end
of the game was
a pretty special
moment as a
coach,” Tahere
said.
“Now it’s
around trying
to keep them
grounded, but
also keep them
believing in themselves and giving
them confidence that they
can carry on for the rest of the
season.”
Christchurch host Sydenham
this weekend in their first home
game of the year, coinciding
with club day. Tahere is hoping
for a strong turnout at Christchurch
Park.
“All our games in pre-season
have all been away, so it’s going
to be the first time we run out
of the tunnel onto the number
one field.
“We’ll have a lot of our life
members and all those stalwarts
coming to the game, so
“The general consensus across
the club and the player group
would be that, we’re not satisfied
– we’re not here to just make up
the numbers. For me personally,
I’ve always got a burning desire
to be the best.
“Round one at Papanui Domain
is going to be as big as a club
game has ever been here. The
anticipation and support around
our return to premier grade is
really exciting.”
Papanui’s squad also includes
former Halswell players Ken
the boys are going to be really
pumped to show them the hard
work that they’ve put in.”
Tahere credited the win to a
game plan focused on unsettling
Old Boys by doing things
out of the ordinary.
Christchurch’s opening try
– scored by Sam Hainsworth-
Fa’aofo just four minutes in
– came from an intentionally
Tofilau and Antonio Lemalu, who
followed Hubbard.
Meanwhile, new Riccarton
Knights head coach Sean
Spooner is looking to build on
last year’s progress after the side
reached its first final in 21 years.
Spooner, who served as assistant
under Brent Ringdahl last
season, will also coach the Canterbury
Bulls.
He said injuries could impact
From a coaching point of view, it
Bye: Linwood Keas
match against Hornby Panthers
short of game time after recent
niggles, while 41-year-old Kyle
Leka’s minutes will be managed.
“In terms of what we did last
year, we can definitely build off
that. Hopefully we can get some
wins together, then get some
of our cattle back to build into
the last couple rounds of the
season.”
At Halswell, Kevin Te Hau has
taken over from Hubbard after
two years as assistant coach.
The Hornets have lost Tofilau
and Lemalu to Papanui, while Te
Hau’s son Cooper has moved to
Alexandra for work. New additions
include union converts
Tom Moriarty from Shirley,
and Sydenham pair Tyler Tapa-
Wither and Roman Keno.
Te Hau said his side needed to
lift after falling short in recent
seasons – knocked out in last
year’s semi-finals after losing
the grand final the year before.
“It’s just getting the guys to go
and find another gear.”
Thornley brings up 100 with emotional home track win
Gemma Thornley marked her 100th win
on her home track at Motukarara.
PHOTO: HARNESS RACING NZ
BY MIKE LOVE
There was both relief and
elation for Gemma Thornley
when she chalked up her 100th
driving success at Motukarara
on Easter Monday.
Her win with Franco Tim in
the Crate and Barrel/Alpine
Inn Hanmer/Mark Tweedy
Mobile Pace was her fifth
with the seven-year-old son of
Sportswriter.
She has driven him in all those
wins and the fact that Franco
Tim’s trainer, Chris Thornley, is
Gemma’s father added that extra
magic to the moment.
She had been stuck on 99
since Cinderella Franco won at
Cromwell in early January.
“It’s been a relief to get it,” she
said.
“He means a lot to me that
horse. Mum and dad were both
there, and it was on my home
track, so it couldn’t have worked
out better.”
Thornley allowed Franco Tim
to use his customary gate speed
to lead early, before securing the
trail behind Evidently.
Once Blair Orange and
Magical Max took the lead at
the 1200m, Franco Tim and
Thornley were locked up threeback
the fence. Thornley then
executed a gap perfectly to
breeze by through the middle,
scoring by one length from
Magical Max and Happy Harriet.
“He was travelling nicely. The
gaps opened up and he hit them
really well.”
Thornley, who currently
works for Greg and Ben Hope at
Woodend Beach, acknowledges
the support she has had from
family and previous employers.
“I’ve been lucky to have such
a good support network. Mark
Jones and Steven McRae, who I
worked for, have both helped my
career immensely."
Thornley drove her first
winner Nemera Franco for
McRae at Banks Peninsula in
2020.
With Thornley’s win she now
joins her aunt Olivia Thornley
and uncle Sam Thornley,
recent ex-juniors, into the open
driving ranks.
“Hopefully I’ve proved myself
enough to keep getting drives
and moving forward.”
Thornley said her driving
highlight so far has been
winning the Group 3 Bulk
Liquid Solutions Gallagher Gold
Cup at Omakau in January.
“I am getting a great
opportunity driving horses
like Midnight Dash, in that
company. Winning the Group
3 race at Omakau, and also
driving him in the Dominion
have definitely been big
highlights.”
Shower shock for teammates as
Mustchin swaps pitch for plumbing
BY SAM COUGHLAN
When former Crusader Matt
Mustchin told his old teammates
about the shower setup at One
New Zealand Stadium, he was
met with disbelief.
Mustchin, who made a single
appearance for the Crusaders in
2002, is now a plumber and part
of the team that installed the stadium’s
showers, toilets and hot
water systems.
“When we were building it, I’d
be sending videos to our (Crusaders)
alumni group and showing
them what was going on inside
the stadium,” he said.
So what did his former teammates
make of it?
“I got a lot of commentary
around the showers. Times have
changed – an old shower block
used to be just open and everyone
would be able to stand
around and have a beer and
have a yarn and all that sort of
stuff, but they’ve all changed
now to individual cubicles.
“I remember sending that to
the group one time and I know
Mehrts (Andrew Mehrtens) came
back straight away and was like,
‘what the heck is that’.”
Each team changing room
features 12 individual shower
cubicles, while there are 533 toilets
across the stadium.
Working on the new stadium
has been a source of pride for
Mustchin, who played at Lancaster
Park – then known as Jade
Stadium – for Canterbury in the
late 1990s and early 2000s.
He moved to the United Kingdom
in 2003, qualifying for
Scotland on residency and playing
Former Crusader Matt Mustchin, now a plumber, was part of the team that helped build
One New Zealand Stadium. Inset right, Mustchin (left) celebrates with Reuben Thorne,
12 final win over the Brumbies at Jade Stadium in 2002. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
five tests in 2008-09, before
returning to Christchurch after
retiring from professional rugby.
“I pushed hard with our
company wanting to win (the
contract) and be part of that,
after playing at Jade Stadium
those years ago,” Mustchin said.
“As a former Crusader, I just
love being part of it. It’s great to
see a massive stadium like that
back in Christchurch again.”
These days, Mustchin competes
in adventure racing. He
completed a 24-hour event in
Kaikōura at the weekend, featuring
mountain biking, trekking,
navigation and packrafting.
He has done the Coast to
Coast six times and is also
planning several trail running
and kayaking events over
winter.
“I just found a really good
group of mates that do this
sort of stuff and want to keep
challenging themselves,” he
said.
“Over the last seven or eight
years, I’ve really got into it. It’s
changed my lifestyle a bit, but I
really enjoy it.”
Mustchin is looking forward
to being part of the crowd
for the stadium’s opening
game next Friday, when the
Crusaders take on the Waratahs
as part of Super Round which
features all five matches in
round 11 of Super Rugby Pacific
taking place in one location.
After the Crusaders game
on Friday, the Hurricanes and
Brumbies will meet on Saturday
followed by the Blues and Reds.
On Sunday, the Highlanders will
play Moana Pasifika before the
Chiefs play Fijian Drua.
“We’ve got a full crew on that
whole weekend to make sure
the place is running smoothly
and there are no issues – and
if there are, we can fix them
straight away.
“I’m really looking forward
to seeing how it handles 25,000
people each day across Friday,
Saturday and Sunday. It’ll be
pretty massive.”
Mustchin and his coworkers installed 533 toilets in the new stadium, while each changing room boasts 12 individual shower cubicles – a big change from the open
shower rooms of the past.
Chris White clinched the NZ Toyota
GR86 championship title on Saturday.
White holds his
nerve to claim
GR86 crown
BY SAM COUGHLAN
A poor qualifying session and a
near spin in the final race of the
season could not stop Prebbleton
driver Chris White from clinching
the NZ GR86 Championship title
in Taupō on Saturday.
White finished seventh and
second in his two races, and with
Sunday’s third race called off due
to Cyclone Vaianu, the results
were enough to secure the championship
after race two.
“The boys thought I was going
to have a bit more of a happy
reaction, but for me it was just a
big sigh of relief the second I saw
that chequered flag,” he said.
White’s title bid was nearly
derailed on lap two of the second
race when his back wheel was
clipped while running in second
place, almost sending him into a
spin and down the order.
“It was pretty hectic, got the
heart rate up,” he said.
He went into the race with a
healthy championship lead and
only needed to finish inside the
top 12.
Nearest rival Zach Blincoe
finished fifth, but White kept
control and held on for second –
more than enough to seal the title.
The championship win earns
White a fully-funded spot in
three rounds of the Australian
Monochrome GT4 Series, courtesy
of Toyota Gazoo Racing NZ. The
series starts at The Bend, near
Adelaide, on May 8.
White competed in two rounds
last season and hopes to contest
the full GT4 series in 2027.
“I think that’s going to be really
cool. We’re heading towards
doing that championship (in the
future) so it’s going to be really
good progress to get a few more
rounds in there,” he said.
White said his long-term goal is
to reach Supercars level.
“Every young Kiwi wants to get
to Supercars and I’m definitely
on that bandwagon, so we’ll keep
pushing forward towards that.”

SCHOOL OPEN DAYS
Standing and
Working Together:
The Christian Education
Network of Schools
The Christian Education Network
(CEN) of schools in Greater
Christchurch offers high-quality
education founded on Biblical
truth, within a Christ-centred
supportive community that
emphasises character, creativity, and
responsibility.
At its heart, the CEN is a
collaboration of State Integrated
Christian schools working together
to strengthen Christian education.
Established in the early 2000s,
the network builds on a 60-year
history of Christian education in
Christchurch. Initially comprising
four city schools—Middleton Grange,
Hillview, Emmanuel, and Aidanfield
Christian Schools—the network has
since expanded to the wider region
and includes Rangiora New Life and
Rolleston Christian Schools.
Our network offers communitybased
primary education with
pathways to secondary schools
on both sides of the Waimakariri
River. This provides opportunity for
children to continue their Christian
education through to graduation, no
matter where they live in Greater
Christchurch.
The CEN’s successful development
has been supported by a collaborative
relationship with the Ministry of
Education, who have worked with
us to provide coordinated enrolment
schemes and the best possible
education while staying true to our
Christian values.
As enrolment season approaches,
we invite you to explore the
opportunities within the CEN
network. Together, we can provide
your child with an education that
equips them for using their Godgiven
gifts and skills in serving
others, making a positive impact, and
fulfilling their purpose in life.
providing the warm, pastoral care
necessary for a smooth transition from
primary or intermediate school.
Our Open Evening is a fabulous
Te Aratai College
Inspiring Diverse Learners
Te Aratai College has a clear focus –
to meet the individual needs of every
learner in a safe, caring environment.
Te Aratai College is a place where every
learner is known and valued as an
individual and where whānau-school
relationships matter. From 1954 and the
opening of Linwood High School, through
to 2024 and our first year as Te Aratai
College, our kura continues its proud
history of serving its diverse community.
We remain a truly community school,
in the community and of the community.
Our large and diverse catchment
contributes to a richness that reflects
Aotearoa-New Zealand’s current identity
and prepares our learners to be active,
global citizens.
We have a vibrant, bi-cultural context
where our rangatahi from all cultures
and backgrounds can learn and grow,
safe in Ngā Uara o Te Aratai - our
values - of Manaakitanga (showing
respect, generosity and care for others),
Whanaungatanga (working together for a
sense of belonging), Rangatiratanga (selfdetermination
and self-responsibility),
and Tūrangawaewae (our place to feel
safe and connected - a place we belong)
to reach personalised excellence.
Individuals learn best when who they
are - language, culture and identity - is
affirmed. Acknowledging the mauri and
dignity of the individual is at the heart of
Te Aratai College, inspiring our diverse
learners to be their best selves. We
focus on personalised success through a
pathwayed curriculum, whereby learners
progressively self-manage and direct
their learning pathway - university,
polytechnics, the workforce, and a good
life reflecting our name gifted to us
by Ngāi Tūāhuriri: Te Aratai College,
Pathway to the Sea.
We would love you to be part of this
SCHOOL OPEN DAYS
Hillmorton High School
I am proud to be the new Tumuaki
| Principal of Te Kura Tuarua o
Horomaka, Hillmorton High School.
At Hillmorton we are passionate
about our students reaching their
best. The student body along with
our international students reflects
the wider social fabric of Aotearoa.
Inclusion and belonging are at the
heart of our school, and we are proud
of the strong values and relationships
that underpin all we do.
Over the past decade Hillmorton
has undergone a remarkable
transformation. Once a mid-sized
school of around 700 we now serve
more than 1400 ākonga, a reflection
of the trust and confidence our
community places in us. When young
people step through the doors of
Hillmorton, they are met by more
than just educators. Our teachers
are dedicated to nurturing wellrounded,
accomplished individuals
within a vibrant, supportive learning
community.
We pride ourselves on offering a
wealth of opportunities both inside
and outside the classroom. Our
co-curricular programme encourages
participation, leadership and success
across academic, arts, sports and
cultural areas. Our Ākonga compete
at a National Level in many different
sports while our Robotics team has for
the third year in a row been invited to
compete in the World Championships.
We are continuing to invest in high
quality learning spaces with our new
Science block scheduled for completion
in October this year and plans are
currently underway for the building of
a new Arts block to follow shortly.
I am excited for what lies ahead as we
continue to develop our school where
excellence, identity, and belonging
are at the forefront of what we do. We
challenge our ākonga to strive for their
utmost and aim high in their academic
achievements. Just as importantly, we
want our students to feel a deep sense
of belonging, standing strong in their
identity and the unique perspective
they bring. They will leave our school
proud of who they are, grounded in a
vibrant community with friends who
will continue to inspire and support
them long after they leave.
Super Round in Christchurch is a three-day festival of rugby over Anzac
activities. Fans from across New Zealand, Australia, Fiji and the Pacific
converge on Ōtautahi Christchurch to experience the action under the
stadium’s fixed roof, making it a major celebration of sport and the city’s
vibrant atmosphere.
How to get amongst the fun if I don’t have a ticket?
ChristchurchNZ is producing a Live Site on The Terrace next to the Bridge
of Remembrance where all the games will be shown live on a big screen.
There are also signing sessions and other fun activities at the Bridge of
Remembrance.
A Fan Trail along Cashel Street will connect the Live Site with the
Stadium, and you’ll be sure to mix and mingle with fans on the Trail.
GETTING THERE
The best way to get to One New Zealand Stadium is on foot from the
central city. Traffic congestion can be heavy, especially during peak
times so plan your trip ahead and allow plenty of time to get to and
from the venue – aiming to arrive at least 45 minutes before kick off.
ON FOOT
The stadium is just 400 metres from the public Bus Interchange and
about an 8-minute walk from The Terrace following a Fan Trail along
Cashel Street. There are pedestrian walkways throughout the Stadium
precinct linking to all streets.
BY BUS
Event Direct by Metro is Christchurch’s new pre-booked shuttle
bus service designed specifically for major events at the stadium. It
provides a reliable, direct transport option for fans attending large
events such as Super Round.
There are 11 well-known, accessible pickup points across Christchurch.
The buses will go directly to Latimer Square (and Ara on Ferry Road for
Sumner/Ferrymead services), with the return journey departing from the
same locations. These locations are both about a 4-minute walk from
the stadium.
BIKE/E‐SCOOTER
Bike racks are available in the stadium precinct. E-scooters from
Flamingo and Lime are available in the city for short commutes to and
from the stadium.
TAXI & RIDESHARE
Taxis and rideshare vehicles will drop off and pick up at designated
zones on Lichfield St just east of the stadium.
BY CAR
During Super Round, the streets immediately surrounding the stadium
will be closed.
There is no onsite parking at the stadium however there are several
public car parks nearby.
Using public transport, bikes and scooters or taxi and
ride-share options will be the most efficient options.
