Ant fan buzzing
ahead of global
nature challenge
Ant enthusiast Patrick Rayen
is busy preparing to take
hundreds of the tiny insects
on a nocturnal adventure as
part of this year’s City Nature
Challenge.
The challenge from April
24-27, is an annual, four-day
global “bioblitz” where cities
compete to document plant, animal,
and fungi species using the
iNaturalist app.
This is the eighth year
Christchurch has taken part
to help connect residents with
nature and gather data on local
urban biodiversity.
Patrick, 11, is taking at least
four of his ant farms to the
challenge’s evening adventures
event, where people will be able
to
The
see
Star,
them
January
being
23,
fed.
2025
Species will include parrot
ants, big headed ants, Suchier's
meat ant and the white footed
house ant.
“I first started becoming interested
in ants about five years
ago after watching some videos
on The YouTube. Star, January Then 23, I noticed 2025
them crawling around in the
garden at home and started trying
to identify them using the
iNaturalist app,” he said.
Now he wants to be an entomologist
and always carries test
tubes when he is out and about,
just in case he comes across
a species he does not already
have.
His most exciting discovery so
far was being the first person to
identify the Sydney mono ant in
the South Island, in August last
year.
“The species is now listed in
the New Zealand Arthropod Collection,
with his name as finding
it,” said Sandra, Patrick’s mum.
The public is invited to Avonside’s
Climate Action Campus
and the surrounding red zone
land to see Patrick’s ants and
find out what biodiversity they
can discover at night-time.
Scientists and experts will be
on hand to help identify what’s
found.
Other fun activities arranged
for the evening adventure
Patrick Rayen will be bringing his ant farms to the City Nature Challenge’s evening adventures event , giving starnews.co.nz
the public an
opportunity to see the insects being fed.
include rock painting, light traps
being set up to catch night flyers,
a tour of the butterfly gardens
and a scavenger hunt.
Christchurch people have
really got behind previous
challenges.
In 2024, there was a largescale
effort to put the city on the
international biodiversity map.
More than 20,000 nature
observations saw Christchurch
place 26th out of 690 cities,
beating the likes of Los Angeles,
PHOTO: CCC
Melbourne and Wellington.
Last year the number of nature
observations rose to more than
25,000, placing Christchurch 27th
out of 669 cities, with a grand total
of 3.3 million observations made
worldwide. starnews.co.nz
How scared
dogs can be
dangerous
BY JESSICA REYNOLDS
Experts say reducing a dog's
fear through positive early life
experiences and socialisation
can help prevent future fearbased
attacks.
The comments come as a
review gets under way of
dog control laws in response
to an attack in Bryndwr in
February that left a father and
his teenage son in hospital and
the fatal mauling of a
62-year-old woman in
Northland.
SPCA New Zealand
senior scientific officer,
Dr Alison Vaughan, said
one of the biggest risk
factors for fear-based
aggression in dogs is their
upbringing.
Fear is a “huge risk
factor” in dog attacks,
Vaughan said.
Dogs need to gain positive
early life experiences with
a range of different people,
animals, places and sounds
in order to learn what is
appropriate behaviour.
“To set your dog up for
success, avoid situations that
put more pressure on the dog,
or where the dog might feel
threatened, or in pain,” she
said.
Dogs have “really great
communication” when
they feel overwhelmed or
uncomfortable, including
growling, excessive barking,
and body language.
Dogs are often “misheard”
and “reprimanded” when they
try to let people know they
are uncomfortable by
growling or barking.
Instead, Vaughan
said owners should pay
attention to anything
that might cause them
to become scared, and
remove it.
This will show the
dog how to remove
itself from fearful
situations, rather than
become aggressive.
Positive life experiences
also help to “reduce a dog's
susceptibility to fear”, she said.
Mark Gall, grand master
dog trainer and behavioural
therapist at Bark Busters,
has worked with aggressive
Canterbury dogs for more than
Alison Vaughan
Mark Gall says dogs have a fight or flight response just like people. Inset – An SPCA resource to show children how a dog’s
body language can indicate it is scared.
25 years, and says about 90%
of the time when a dog exhibits
aggressive behaviour it is a
fear-based reaction.
“Dogs have a fight or flight
response,” Gall said.
“Just like people.”
He said dogs don’t want to
fight, but will if they don’t
know any other way out of
a situation. “This is why it’s
important to socialise a dog
from a young age.”
He said canines can have
many fear-based triggers, with
unfamiliar dogs, people, sounds
and places at the top of that list.
The right training can help
to desensitise dogs to these
triggers and teach them to
respond calmly in stressful
situations.
“Don’t wait for an attack to
happen,” Gall said.
Always seek professional help
if you are concerned by a dog’s
behaviour.
Kahikatea Kirkwood
Intermediate School
Celebrating Kahikatea Kirkwood
House Captains for 2026
Year 7 Camp
Our Year 7 students have
recently attended a camp at
Ōnuku Marae. This is a great way
for the children to get to know
each other and is part of
our NZ Histories
programme.
We learnt how to sail
a sailing boat. We also
visited the museum and
learnt about the Te Tiriti
o Waitangi – Treaty of
Waitangi.
“Ōnuku Marae is home to the hapū (sub-tribe) of Ngāi Tārewa
and Ngāti Īrakehu. Our home has been the setting for some of
the most significant and historic events seeded in the founding
of our nation including the signing of the Tiriti o Waitangi
(Treaty of Waitangi) by our Tīpuna (ancestors).”
Ōnuku Marae website: www.onuku.nz
At camp, I learnt
more about Māori
history and culture, both at
Takapūneke and the marae.
I also learnt quite a
few new games which
was such fun.
House Captains for Mansfield/Hillary
Brenna - Ex Wigram Primary School – Te Piki Kahu
I love Kahikatea Kirkwood Intermediate School because of all the
opportunities and activities/events that we have available at school. There
is such a variety of roles, and various sports opportunities you can join or
belong to. This year I would like to improve my skills in netball and encourage
others to experience a variety of activities. The reason why I wanted to be
a House Captain was because I love the idea of helping others, not just
students. I would like to develop my skills as a leader, it will be a good
experience for me.
Jun Beom - Ex Ilam School
I like the opportunities Kahikatea Kirkwood Intermediate school offers and
I like how we are very multi-cultural. I would like to ensure our school keeps
its good reputation, so the community will see how good our school is by the
experiences of our students. Being a House Captain was important for me as
I wanted to be a good leader and be a positive influence on other students.
House Captains for Sheppard/Freyberg
Grace - Ex Lincoln Primary
I love how there are so many opportunities culturally, academically and
sports orientated. There is something for everyone in and out of school
hours. I want to help Kahikatea Kirkwood thrive in sports this year, including
CAIMS and athletics. The reason I wanted to be a House Captain is because
I love cheering and encouraging other students in any and every way.
I believe I have a lot of potential to be a great leader for the school.
Alfie - Ex Ararira Springs Primary
I like the number of opportunities there are in winter sports and leadership
roles. This year I would like to ensure everyone works together. I wanted to
be a House Captain so I can make my house better and it will give me more
responsibility to become a better leader.
House Captains for Britten/Te Kanawa
Alexandra - Ex Ilam School
I like the opportunities Kahikatea Kirkwood Intermediate provides, in
particular, the Technology areas (Food, Metal, Wood, Plastics etc). I also like
the diversity of the school because we get to celebrate many cultures. During
my time at Kahikatea Kirkwood Intermediate I would like everyone to feel like
the school is a safe environment, both physically and mentally. I wanted to be
a House Captain because I want to lead the school with pride and make it a
better place. I would like to be a good role model.
Malcolm - Ex Wairarapa Cobham Intermediate and Prebbleton School:
Te Kura o Taumata Kuri
Kahikatea Kirkwood Intermediate School offers great leadership
opportunities and extra extension classes. I would like to try to make others
feel accepted into the community and feel a sense of belonging. Sharing the
workload to help make students feel a sense of purpose. I would like to keep
making Kahikatea Kirkwood Intermediate School a fun place to belong to
and I would like to be a good role model for others.
House Captains for Rutherford/Batten
Tatiana - Ex Wigram Primary School – Te Piki Kahu
I like the wide range of opportunities that Kahikatea Kirkwood Intermediate
School provides in extra-curricular activities. This year, I would like to see
more events/activities being held during breaktimes to bring more people
together, not just in sport. The reason I wanted to be a House Captain was
because I would like to inspire everyone across the school and help them to
feel they belong.
Malaefou - Ex Gilberthorpes School
What I like about Kahikatea Kirkwood Intermediate is that it is a really friendly
and welcoming school. I want to make sure when there are events happening
at school that everyone who gets involved enjoys it. I wanted to be a House
Captain so I could help people and be a good role model for the school.
I enjoyed learning
about the pōwhiri
where we sang to each
other and then we read
out speeches.
We also learnt how to
play traditional Māori
games.
I loved the Cansail
and Black Cat cruise
because we learnt how to
put the sails up and down.
We also saw a lot of
dolphins and seals
while on the boat.
OPEN
DAY
We learnt about
the history of the
area, it was a great
way to get to know
each other.
My favourite part
was getting to play
outside and enjoy the
culture of the marae.
I really enjoyed learning
about the history of
Aotearoa.
