The Valley Of Lakes And
Glaciers
Samina Raees Khan

Visiting Kaghan Valley offers an immersive
learning in alpine ecology, geological lake formation,
biodiversity, nature, mythology and
folklore along-with local cultural heritage. Other
interesting takeaways for a tourist include an
understanding of high-altitude eco-system of
the forests, freezing and melting glaciers, lakes,
mountain tops, peaks, and historical routes Side
by side, skillful thrilling sports like rafting, hiking,
trekking, camping and fishing on different
spots within the Valley allow adventure and
learning together. By participating in local
activities and interacting with communities,
visitors explore the history of tribes like Swati,
Awans, and nomadic Gujjars. Most residents in
the upper Valley are nomads who live in tents
and graze livestock, moving between upper
pastures and lower warmer areas seasonally.
Kaghan and its’ surrounded region are known
for the seasonal migration. . Nomadic groups in
colorful attires move with their herds to highlands
in spring and return back to lower areas
(like Balakot) in autumn.
7
A
Learning
Splendour!
Located in Mansehra District
in Pakistan’s KPK province,
the Valley is approximately
161 kilometer long. It stretches
from Balakot to the Babusar
Pass, with the Kunhar River
flowing all along. As an alpine
Valley, it is typically located
above the tree line and below
the permanent snowline.
It rises from an elevation of
roughly 650 to over 4170 meter
covering an area of 1627
square kilometer. It is characterized
by sparse vegetation,
steep terrains, and cold, windy
or dry conditions. Its surrounded
landscapes and lash green
meadows are used for summer
grazing and create a real natural
beauty to watch.
Kaghan Valley seems to exist
as a living classroom for travelers
of all ages and diverse
interests, nature enthusiasts,
photographers, birdwatchers,
herbalists, and scientists.
8
Medical experts may find a high interest in Kaghan due to its
rich but under-documented biodiversity, extensive ethnomedical
knowledge and unique ecosystems. Researchers also study
diverse flora and fauna, medicinal plants for pharmaceutical and
conservation studies. Any tourism to the Valley is highly relevant
to professionals in Botany and pharmacology, due to its’
under-studied biological resources waiting to be explored. The
local tribes and residents possess extensive knowledge of medicinal
plants which are used to cure many human ailments as
well as indigenous remedies useful to treat livestock and farm
animals.
The metaphoric description of the Valley as a ‘learning splendour’
evokes the idea of transforming tourist experience into an
awe-inspiring engagement. A traveler must also visit Kaghan
breathtaking alpine scenery,
dramatic high-altitude lakes
and glaciers including its’ legendary
Saiful Muluk, Lulusar ,
Ansu Lake and the hidden lake
Dudipat Sar. Many glaciers are
located near Naran, Battakundi,
Borawai and the Rajwal
area. Key glaciers often visited
by tourists are situated along
the route to Lake Saif-ul-Muluk
on the steep slopes of Malika
Parbat. The emerald green
Kunhar river flows throughout
the Valley and is famous for its
trout fishing while providing a
soothing landscape as a background.
Another spot, the Babusar
Top provides a panoramic
view and connects Kaghan
with Gilgit area.
9
The Valley is at its best during summers when
the high-altitude mountain routes are functional
and tourists have open access for upward mobility.
Kaghan can best be described as one long
alpine learning trajectory featuring multiple
destinations and scenic spots.
10
Any write up on Kaghan Valley will remain incomplete
without delving into its’ rich romantic,
mystical and often supernatural folklores
which are an integral tradition to the Valley
as are its’ landscapes, mountains and lakes.
One of the most famous folklores is the magical
love legend of the prince Saif-ul-Muluk
and the fairy Badi-ud-Jamal which is associated
with the lake Saif-ul-Muluk. Linked directly
with this story, the ‘Ansoo lake’ (tearshaped
lake discovered in 1993) is believed to
be formed with the sorrowful tears of the heart
broken Deov sufaid (Giant). Upon realizing
that his beloved Badi-ud-Jamal had escaped
with the prince, he cried and wept in grief. Another
folklore suggests that one of Emperor
Akbar’s blind daughter was cured after taking
a bath in the Lake Lulusar. A similar romantic
tale of social resistance often cited is that of a
worker who fell in love with a local girl Darshi
in the Paras village. The forest near the village
is named as Darshi’s forest in memory of the
tragic end of the lovers.
All these stories are deeply embedded in the
local culture of the Valley and it is important
for a visitor to relate them with his travelling
experience in the Kaghan Valley.

Badshahi Mosque:
Lahore’s Enduring Mughal
Legacy
Hadia Sherazi
13
The Badshahi Mosque epitomizes Mughal
architectural supremacy within Lahore’s historic
Walled City. Erected between 1671 and 1673
under Emperor Aurangzeb’s directive—overseen
by Crown Prince Muazzam—this colossal
edifice spans 275,000 square feet, accommodating
100,000 devotees. Its dimensions—560
feet by 328 feet—with eight 200-foot minarets
and triple onion domes, rival the Jama Masjid
of Delhi. As a tentative UNESCO World Heritage
site, it embodies spiritual profundity and
artistic virtuosity. This pilgrimage revealed its
multifaceted splendor.
14
How To Reach:
•Airport Route (13 km):
Lahore → Multan Road → GT Road → circular
Walled City entrance
•City Center (7 km): Liberty Market → Mall
Road → Mochi Gate → mosque.
•Minar-e-Pakistan ( 2 km): walking along
walls to Delhi Gate.
The elevated courtyard, accessed via marble
staircases, unveils pristine ablution pools reflecting
minaret silhouettes. Intricate tile mosaics—floral
arabesques in lapis lazuli and verdigris—adorn
the prayer hall, where Aurangzeb’s
mihrab bears faint prayer imprints.
The Ranjit Singh Museum (adjacent) chronicles
Sikh interregnum, displaying gem-encrusted
arms restored post-1849.
15
16
Seasonal Festivals: Vibrant Cultural Immersions
Badshahi Mosque pulses with festivals, amplifying visitor experiences. Illuminated
minarets at dusk ; courtyard picnics featuring local cuisines sheer kharma and samosas
amid spritual enviornment. Eid festivals bring colorful activities including
with spectular fireworks. Basant Kite Festival (February) fills skies with yellow
kites flown from rooftops. Mawlid-un-Nabi (Rabi’ al-Awwal) hosts Qawwali nights
are the main features of celebrations on Mawlid-un-Nabi (Rabi’ al-Awwal) and Independence
Day drawing global pilgrims. Independence Day (August 14) also features
laser shows on domes. Other major attractions are family gatherings, children’s
calligraphy stalls, kite-making workshops, and heritage quizzes with prizes enhance
engagement. Walled City’s alleys yield gastronomic delights at Food Street while
Lahore Fort and Shalimar Gardens form a triumvirate itinerary.
Sustained by Aga Khan initiatives, Badshahi Mosque defies entropy. Visit during October-March
for clement climes.
In Badshahi’s shadows, Lahore’s soul endures—eternal, unyielding.

Lal Suhanra Park
Pakistan’s Timeless Natural Treasury
A journey to Lal Suhanra National Park
is more than just a trip to a forest; it is a transition
from the bustling, arid landscapes of South
Punjab into a sprawling oasis of biodiversity.
Located about 35 km east of Bahawalpur, this
park is one of the largest in South Asia and
holds the prestigious status of being a UNES-
CO Biosphere Reserve.
Spanning over 170,000 acres, it is a rare hybrid
of three distinct ecosystems: desert, wetland,
and forest.
Anum Shakir
The Gateway to the
Wilderness
The drive from Bahawalpur toward Lal Suhanra
is a scenic prelude. As the urban sprawl
fades, the roadside is lined with tall shisham
and acacia trees. Upon reaching the park, the
air shifts—becoming cooler and carrying the
earthy scent of pine and damp soil. The entrance
marks the beginning of a territory where
nature is the primary architect.
19
The Forest and
the Safari
The park is divided into several
sections, but the Lion Safari is often
the first stop for visitors. Driving
through the enclosure in a protected
vehicle, you get a sense of
the wild’s raw power. Seeing these
apex predators lounging under the
shade of massive trees, just a few
meters away, is a heart-pounding
experience. Beyond the lions, the
forest itself is a marvel. It was
originally a plantation started in
the late 1930s, designed to stabilize
the sand dunes of the Cholistan
Desert. Today, it stands as
a dense canopy that provides a
sanctuary for:
• Wild Boars
• Jackals
• Desert Cats
• Monitor Lizards
The Crown Jewel: The Blackbuck Enclosure
• The most significant achievement of Lal Suhanra is the conservation of the Blackbuck (Antilope
cervicapra). Once nearly extinct in the region, a dedicated breeding program—bolstered
by a gift of animals from the USA in the late 1960s—has brought the population back to healthy
numbers.
• Watching the Blackbucks is a lesson in grace. Their spiraled horns and striking black-andwhite
coats make them perhaps the most photogenic residents of the park. They are shy creatures,
usually seen grazing in the early morning or late afternoon when the desert sun loses its bite.
Patisar Lake: A Birdwatcher’s Paradise
Deep within the park lies Patisar Lake, a massive body of water that serves as a vital stopover for
migratory birds traveling the “Indus Flyway.” During the winter months (November to February),
the lake becomes a mosaic of colors. Thousands of birds from Siberia and Central Asia descend
upon the waters. If you bring a pair of binoculars, you can spot:
20
• Common Teal (A kind of wild duck)
• Mallards (A kind of wild duck)
• Great Crested Grebes (a kind of water bird)
• Cormorants (Aquatic bird)
The sight of a sunset over Patisar Lake is arguably the highlight of the trip. The sky turns a deep
violet and orange, reflected perfectly in the still water, while the sounds of whistling ducks provide
a natural soundtrack.
A Note for Travelers: Planning Your Visit
To make the most of Lal Suhanra, timing and preparation is the key.
Best Time to Visit: October to March (Avoid the scorching summer heat).
Accommodation: TDCP (Tourism Developm ent Corporation Punjab) offers rest houses and
huts for overnight stays.
Activities: Bird watching, trekking, boating on the lake, and wildlife photography.
Essential Gear: Sunscreen, comfortable hiking shoes, and plenty of water.
21
The Children Park and Picnic Points
For families, the park offers well-maintained picnic spots near the entrance. There is a small children’s
play area and a mini-zoo featuring peacocks and local deer species. It is a popular spot for
Bahawalpur locals on weekends, where the smell of outdoor BBQs often fills the air.
The Ecological Significance
Lal Suhanra is more than a tourist destination; it is a “green lung” for the region. In an era of rapid
climate change, this park serves as a critical carbon sink and a barrier against desertification. The
management works tirelessly to balance the needs of the local community with the preservation
of the wildlife. However, like many natural reserves, it faces challenges such as water scarcity
for the lake and the constant battle against illegal poaching. A visit here is a reminder of why
conservation matters—to ensure that future generations can still see a Blackbuck sprint across
the horizon.
