System (QMS)isfailing.
“It’samere shadow of theonce
The kahawai has been labelled
“the family fish” as it provides
recreation.
ButTonysaysthe resource is being
“hammered” bythe greed of
corporatecompany purseseiners
to thepoint of collapse.
Kahawai are schooling pelagic
fish, introduced to the QMS in
2004 in abid “toensuresustainability.”Theyare
highly prized by
recreational fishers andcommercially
bulk harvested.
“The alarming declineshows the
failureofthe QMStoensurethat
sustainability,” said Tony Orman.
Afew decades ago, surface
feeding kahawai schools were
easily identified by gulls and
ternswheelingabove thefeeding
melees.The fishwerefrequently
spotted around Marlborough’s
coastline and even just off the
Picton foreshore.
“But that is very much past
tense with afeeding school only
very occasionally seen today,”
Tony says.
The Recreational Fishers MarlboroughAssociation
hadwritten
over theyears to successive fisheriesministers
aboutthe decline.
Ministerialresponses have denied
“No doubt written bysome
the replies were insulting. The
know trends. Some bureaucrat
or minister in centrally heated
officesdoesn’t.”
The kahawai individually is a
low value fish but bulk fishing
methods bycorporate company
compensated for that in dollar
returns.
Tony says reports from around
the country indicated that commercialoperationsweretargeting
The association had reports of
attracted numerous sea birds
while underneath other fish
species like snapper, blue cod
“It becomes afour-way banquet,
Tony says. “Remove the
kahawaiand seabirds andother
fish species have their food
“Kingfish amajor prey of
Finding peace after the late shift
special offer
At 12:03am, Donna lies inbed
staringatthe ceiling. Shegot home
from her shift 18 minutes ago.
Straight into pyjamas. Lights off.
Everything signals it’stime to sleep.
Excepther mindisstillinthe staff
room,replaying conversations with
patients, wondering if shemadethe
right calls.
“My body’s home,” the 52-yearold
mental health social worker
explains. “But mybrain is still at
work.”
After25yearsinthe field,Donna
hadearnedthe right to be excellent
at her job. But after three hours of
broken sleep, she was dragging
herself through shifts. When she
wasn’t working, you’dusually find
her walking, reading, or watching
hergrandson playingsoccer.
Then thesleep problemscrept in.
Firstshe’d lie awakefor 30 minutes
after late shifts. Then an hour.
Before long, she was watching
entirehourstickpast.
“Most people finish at 5pm and
go to bed at10pm,” she explains.
“That’s five hours todecompress. I
wasgivingmyself15minutes.”
Themornings were brutal.“I’droll
out of bed still exhausted. Groping
my way around and trying towake
up. Except Ihadn’t really even been
asleep.”
Her grandson would ask her to
watchhis soccer matches. She’dnod
and then she would spend the match
fightingtokeep hereyesopen.
The moment that crystallised
everything: he scored his first goal
of the season. The other parents
were cheering. Donna jolted awake,
realisingshe’d missedit.
“Did you seeit, Nana?” he asked.
“Ofcourse,” shelied.
He lookedather.“Youwereasleep,
weren’tyou?”
He wasseven.Heshouldn’t have to
track when his grandmother was too
exhaustedtowatch himplay.
Then her sister mentioned Koru
Sleep, anatural supplement made in
NewZealand.
Donna was sceptical. “Working
in mental health, I’d seen every
miracle cure marketed toexhausted
healthcareworkers.Ithought,
‘Anotherone promisingthe earth.’”
Butshe triedit. Twocapsuleswhen
she got home, then 30 minutes to
decompress before bed.
“I expected to lie therefor twohours
like usual,” she says. “But within 20
minutes, something felt different.
Notknockedout but just settled. Like
my nervous system finally got the
message that work wasover.”
The blend of passionflower,
magnesium and valerian seemed
to work with her body rather than
againstit.
Within a week, she was falling
asleep in 20 to 30 minutes,not hours.
Always read the label and take asdirected. If symptoms persist contact your healthcare professional. Koru Nutrition, Christchurch
But the real difference was the
mornings.
“I wasn’t groping my way tothe
kettle anymore. I’d wake up feeling
likeI’d actually slept.”
Thereal test cameather grandson’s
next match. Donna watched the full
60 minutes andsaw everymomentof
histwo goals.
“You saw them both, Nana!” he
beamed.
“Every second,” she said. And she
The sense of fellowship is clear.
Members are proud tobelong tothe
Whale Trail’s ‘incredible’ southern
section nears completion
By DavidHill
LocalDemocracy Reporter
The community is getting inbehind the
Kaikōura sectionofthe WhaleTrail.
The 200km cycle and walking trail is
continuing to weaveits waybetween Picton
and Kaikōura, with the southern leg well
underway.
The 13km section from Harnetts Creek,
north ofKaikōura, to Hāpuku is largely
complete.
The Marlborough Kaikōura Trail Trust is
close tosecuring funding for three cycle /
foot bridges toensure the section iscompletelyoff-road.
Kaikōura District Councilchief executive
Will Doughtysaidthe southern sectionwill
‘‘be arealgamechanger when it’s complete’’.
‘‘Anumberoflocalshavealmoststumbled
across it andwhentheyrealise it is definitely
happening, the feedback is‘wow, this is
goingtobeincredible’.’’
The Kaikōura Cycling Club has played a
major role inhelping the trail link up with
existing cycletrailsaroundthe township.
Mr Doughty said the trail will provide
opportunities for ‘‘low cost’’ tourism,
recreation, exercise, wellbeing and even
commutingtoworkand school,for residents
in thegrowing Hāpuku community.
Thereare also opportunitiestoset up small
businesses,hesaid.
‘‘There’s opportunities all the way along
the Whale Trail for boutique businesses
andother supportbusinesses, whichcan be
trail sections, while Robinson
Construction is working on
the bridges and Abseil Access
is working onthe Tirohanga
It will leave some gaps including
the Hāpuku to Clarence
section, but the trust
will continue with scoping
work,funding arrangements,
cultural considerations and
The Whale Trail was first
conceived following the 7.8
For many rental property owners, the
biggest challenges are clear: choosing the
right tenants, stayingahead of maintenance,
ensuring rent is managed properly, and
finding the time tokeep ontop of it all.
Good property management helps bring
those moving parts together, with the
right systems, oversight, and experience
to protectboththe property andthe return
it delivers.
That mattersevenmoreasrentalproperty
requirements continue to evolve. From
there ismore for owners to stay on top of
than ever before. Professional property
Grassgrub time: By WallyRichards
gardening this week
NewZealand hasits ownnativerooteating
grub that we call grassgrubs, and itsofficial
name is Costelytra zealandica.
Before European settlement grass grubs
were feeding onthe roots ofnative grasses
andother nice tastingroots.
OurnativeKiwiwhich used to be in good
numberswould consumelotsofgrass grubs
each night and keep the grub population
undercontrol.
Settlers upset the apple cart byclearing
native bush and planting grass to feed the
stockthatwas introduced into NZ.
The populations of Kiwi declined and ifI
remember correctlywhenIwasaboy70odd
yearsago that some people thoughtthatthe
Kiwi were extinct. Gone theway of theMoa.
This is an excellent example of mankind,
changing the goal posts and changing the
balancethatnaturestrives for.
Thousands ofacres of grasses meant that
grassgrubs hadsomuchfood andnoKiwito
eatthemupsotheir population grew rapidly.
The damage done topasture and lawns
became acurse for both farmer and homeowner,
so an equaliserhad to be found.
Along came DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane);acolorless
contact insecticide,
toxic to humans and animals when
swallowed orabsorbed through the skin,
whichwas banned overseas (USA in 1972).
In NZ DDT was used extensively for
agricultural use inthe 1950s and 1960s to
control grass grub and porina moth. It was
also used on lawnsand formarketgardens.
Some 500tonswerebeing appliedannually
by 1959.Bythe 1970sits usewas restricted
anditwas finally banned in 1989.
That was 17years after USA banned it,
the reason being that farmers had no other
chemical as effective forgrass grubs.
Interestingly other chemicals have since
been used to controlgrass grubsinlawns and
paddocks, and each one has gone the same
wayasDDT andhas been banned.
Youcan find grass grubs inthe lawn and
gardensatany time of theyear, butthe main
lot are currently working towards the soil
surfaceeatingthe rootsofyourgrasses.
AFemale grass grub beetle lays between
20 to 40 eggs in clusters about70to200mm
belowthe soil surfacelatespringtomid-summerdependent
whereyou areand what the
season is like.
Larvae hatch in16-21 days dependent on
soil temperature. They immediately start
feeding onthe roots atthis depth for about
3monthsbeforemovingupwards to feed in
thetop 60mm of soil for5-10weeks.
Thelaststage,theyare feedingat20-30mm
of soil and that isthe time they are most
vulnerable.
They are present in this area from about
ApriltoJunedependent on wheretheyare
in NZ andthe soil beingmoist.
Inadrysummerthe grubshibernate deep
in thesoiland it’s theautumnrains that bring
them near soil surface.
By cutting asquare with aspade in your
lawn youcan lift theturftodetermine their
numbers.
If only afew then not too much damage
will occurbut if agoodnumberthentheyare
goingtogreatly harm your grasses.
In areaswhere thereare lights at nightsuch
as street lighting, security lighting ornear
windowsemitting light, that iswhere your
worstinfestationswillbeseen.
Once you find that you have grass grubs
near thesurface,you cantreat them.
The safe way is to sprinkle Neem Tree
Powder over thelawnat100 gramsper sqM
where there are heavy infestations and 50
gramsper sqMonlighter infestation.
The lawn should have recently been mown
andthe soil moist.
Afterspreading theNeempowder, lightly
watertowashthe powder down onto thesoil
at thebaseofthe grass.
If you have aroller then roll the lawn to
pressthe powder into thesoil.
Next time you mow, ifyou have arotary
mower, then lift the cutting height up a
couple of notches soyou don’tsuck upthe
powder.
The Neem Powder will stop the grubs
feedingand they will dieofstarvation.
Oneofthe interestingaspects of this is at
thesametimeyou arelikelytocontrol root
nematodesinthe grassaswell.
Most gardeners donot realise they have
nematodes intheir lawn and it’s only after
they treatanareaand notice thetreated area
hasbetterlooking grassthanprevious, then
they know.
This is because the nematodes have been
controlled.
If youwanttode-thatch thelawn, then add
Wallys Thatch Bustatothe Neem Oil.
If you wish touse alawn herbicide for
weedsthatcan be addedasall threeproducts
arecompatible.
Do thespade test of liftingsometurfand
have your Neem Powder readytouse.
While you are about it, sprinkle some
powder under your citrus trees as it will
cleanupany pestsinthe tree.
Firminguploose skin
By George Elder
If youwatched “The Biggest
Loser” afew years
back,you mayhavenoticed
that as the contestants lost
weight they were left with
lots of loosesaggy skin. Asyou thinkabout
yourown weight loss journey, youmay be
concerned about the prospect ofsimilar
loosesaggy skin.Ifso, Iamnot surprised,
butyou maybesurprised to learnthatthere
is away to preventthisproblem.
In 2016, Japanese scientist, Yoshinori
Ohsumi, wonaNobelPrize forhis work on
understanding autophagy. This isalittle
known word that means literally “eating
yourself”. While there had been some
researchonthis, he identifiedand explained
the mechanism. Here is howitworks:
As your body works and ages, various
elementsbreak down andbecomedamaged
and degraded. In the same way that we
have to take the trash out regularly, these
damaged proteins,and dead cellsmustbe
removed, orrepurposed, to keep things
operating cleanlyand efficiently.
When your gut isbusy dealing with
digestion, there is little time forthe housekeeping,
however when itgets aquieter
time, it will up-ratethe levelofautophagy.
Whathappens to thedamaged andbroken
elements? Your bodybreaksthemdownso
that the components can bere-assembled
into newelements. Arefurbishment process.
Thiscontinuouslyreplaceswornout
and damageditems with freshnew material
ready to work foryou.
aredamaged and“unnecessary” proteins.
Your body is very efficient. If it thinks
you no longer need somethingthenitwill
remove, orrepurpose it for other uses.
When Iwas in hospital with abrokenleg,
my body begantorepurpose themuscles of
that legquite quickly. Ihad to work hard to
rebuildmypreviouslevel of legstrength.
Your body is undertakingthisautophagy,
or housekeeping, continuously but ifwe
are notsupportingthis, then abuild up of
trashmay compromise your health. While
it mightnot be directly related, abuild up
of plaque andAmyloid proteins in thebrain
is one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s
disease.
The excess skin left from losing fat, are
proteins that the body can repurpose. At
Dr JasonFung’sobesity clinic in Canada,
hundreds ofpatients have lost large
amounts of weight and hesays, he hasn’t
seen acase where surgery was needed to
remove saggyskin. Howisthispossible?
He teachespatientsaKetogeniclifestyle
