Jess, who is originally from
Another elderly householder
of youths.
The latest incident involved a
group of three throwing lemons
and bottles at the woman’s
incidents in the Lincoln area.
A family member of the
woman in her 90s said the
youths, aged about 10-12, had
been taking lemons off a tree
outside to throw at her house
last week.
The family member said the
group then returned to bang
on the woman’s windows about
1.15am.
Police told the woman to
remove the lemons from her
tree, the family member said.
Two weeks ago, another
Lincoln resident pursued a
group of teenagers after three
nights of banging on his front
The resident found about six
teenagers outside. They ran and
biked off in different directions.
Campus proposal for Helpet Park
scrapped over funding uncertainty
BY DANIEL ALVEY
An emergency services campus
planned for Helpet Park in
Rolleston has been scrapped.
Councillors voted to overturn
a September 2024 decision that
had earmarked the 13ha site for
the campus, which would have
housed police, Fire and Emergency,
and St John services. A
decision on the
project had been
expected last
week.
The council
spent about
$155,000 on a feasibility
study for
the proposal.
However, with
no confirmed Peter Cooper
funding from the
emergency services, councillors
agreed it was best to release the
land.
The site, which is already
zoned for medium-density
housing, could now be used for
residential development.
Of the agencies involved, police
were the most advanced, having
sought funding in the Government’s
2027 budget.
Canterbury rural area commander
Inspector Peter Cooper
declined to say how much had
been requested.
“Any bids in Budget 27, or any
other budget round, are sensitive
unless publicly released,” he said.
What a now shelved emergency services hub for Helpet Park could have looked like.
Cooper said police would continue
working with stakeholders
on potential locations, with land
availability ultimately a matter
for the council.
He also confirmed a twostorey
expansion of the existing
Tennyson St police station
is being built off-site, with
completion expected in July.
“The new building doubles
the number of workstations and
provides additional lockers and
storage spaces along with a new
briefing room.”
Council executive director of
building, planning and regulatory
services Robert Love said the
emergency
services had
not been able
to prioritise the
development.
“That would
leave a prime
block of land in the
core of Rolleston
undeveloped Robert Love
for an unknown
period of time,” Love told
councillors.
While council staff had
recommended exploring
housing for the site, councillors
opted not to lock themselves
into that option.
Said councillor Aaron
McGlinchy: “The housing
is an option, but that’s an
option we need to give greater
consideration rather than taking
it as a result of the decision
making of the emergency
services campus.”
Despite the campus being
dropped at Helpet Park,
councillors agreed to explore
other potential sites for the
project.
Council interim chief executive
Steve Gibling said assessing an
alternative site may require a
further feasibility study, subject
to council approval.
Behaviour
blamed on
holidays
› From Page 1
The youths had been banging
on their front door.
Selwyn Community Patrol
secretary Denise Carrick said an
increasing number of similar
incidents have been reported
to the patrol over recent weeks.
She believed it was related to it
being school holidays.
Carrick encourages people
to report the incidents to
police so they can get a better
picture of where and when it is
happening.
Call prompts armed
police response
A report of a screaming and a
gunshot sparked a large police
response in West Belt, Lincoln,
on Friday afternoon. Residents
reported several police cars,
including armed officers and an
ambulance. Said a police spokesperson:
“The caller advised they
had heard screaming and a gunshot,
but it appears as though the
caller was actually having a mental
health episode and all emergency
services were stood down.”
Darfield’s population boom:
Daniel Alvey looks at how the
infrastructure, businesses
and schools will cope with
the growing number of people
moving to Darfield
As the saying goes ‘west is
best’, and that seems to be
the case for Darfield where
the accelerator is about to
be pushed on the township’s
growth.
One of the biggest indications
it is about to speed up is the
fast-track application from
Hughes Developments for an
800-home subdivision called
Bangor Village.
Construction analyst Mike
Blackburn
said Darfield’s
population
could increase
by about 6000
from its current
3600, with
about 2000 new
homes planned
across multiple
subdivisions.
The latest data
from Infometrics shows the
Mike Blackburn
township’s population has been
growing by about 100 people a
year, but the new homes being
built could cause it to increase
by about 500 a year.
Darfield looks set to follow a
similar trend to Lincoln. Over
the past decade, Lincoln has
been growing by about 700
people a year. But prior to 2015,
it was increasing by about 100
a year.
At large councillor Tracey
Macleod said there is a risk
Darfield will not keep up
with the rise in population, as
happened in Lincoln.
“I have major concerns that
Darfield is going the way of
Lincoln,” she said.
Macleod and fellow
councillors Denise Carrick
and Aaron McGlinchy ran a
community advocacy group,
Lincoln Voice, before they were
elected to the council. It aimed
to fight the 2100-lot Earlsbrook
subdivision in Lincoln, but
was ultimately unsuccessful in
stopping it.
"What we’ve seen in Lincoln
is that it becomes more of an
urban feel, rather than a small
town feel, and with that comes
a disconnect,” said Macleod.
Malvern Ward councillor
John Verry is concerned Bangor
Village’s fast-track application,
which bypasses the council,
and other planned residential
subdivisions could see the
township become fragmented.
Verry was unsure if Darfield
would turn out like Lincoln.
Mayor Lydia Gliddon said the
level of housing density being
proposed for the township “is a
real step change”.
“And I do think it’s pushing
beyond what fits comfortably
with Darfield’s rural village feel.
“For me, it’s not about
whether Darfield changes,
it will, but it’s about how it
changes. Growth can work, but
it needs to be in scale with the
town and supported properly.
If we get that wrong, we risk
losing what makes Darfield
special.”
New residential subdivisions in Darfield could add about 2000 homes over the next 10-15 years.
But Gliddon said there “is a
genuine need for more housing
across Selwyn”, so to see this
kind of development in Darfield
was not unexpected.
“Darfield is a place I know
really well. I grew up there,
went to the high school, and
later ran a local business, so I
understand why people care so
strongly about its character and
rural amenity.”
Gliddon said her focus is
on ensuring infrastructure
improvements are being
made to cater for the growing
population.
“That means making sure
development is supported by
roads, water and wastewater,
community facilities, central
government services like
health and education and
that Darfield’s town centre
continues to function well.
It also means being up-front
with the community about
what growth could look like
and when. People need to
feel informed and part of the
conversation.”
Gliddon also has concerns
with the fast-track process,
saying “communities and
councils have less influence
over how that growth is
shaped”.
“We understand the need for
housing, but the scale and level
of density proposed here is a
significant change for Darfield,
and it’s important that’s very
carefully considered,” she said.
“We’ve been engaging in
the process to make sure
Malvern’s voice is heard. If
developments of this scale
are going to proceed, it is
crucial that there is the right
investment alongside them in
roads, schools, healthcare and
community infrastructure.
Growth works best when
local communities are part of
shaping it.”
Real estate agent Chris Jones
said the cost of land is driving
the population increase. In
Darfield, a 1000sq m section
may sell for about $290,000,
while a 500sq m section in
Rolleston would go for about
$330,000, and a 400sq m pacel
of land in Lincoln
about $350,000.
"People look
for value, local
community, they
look for local
rural village feel.
It’s easy to build,
it’s bulletproof
dirt," Jones said. Chris Jones
"People like
heading west, closer to the
rivers and the mountains.”
But with rapid expansion
there is often growing pain.
Among them are concerns the
rural village feeling may be lost
and infrastructure may not be
able to keep up. Another big
issue for residents is whether
the key services like health and
education can cope with more
people.
Darfield Residents Association
chair Harvey Polglase said the
population increase would
stretch the healthcare system.
"We’ve got a good medical
centre there, but it’s not
keeping up with the existing
population, let alone all the new
residents,” he said.
Darfield’s population has fewer
people aged between 25 and 35
than the rest of the district and
more people over 65.
“It’s all very well to let the
place grow, but you've got to
have the facilities otherwise
you are disadvantaging all the
people here,” Polglase said.
The medical centre is owned
by Green Cross Health. Its
senior regional business
manager for the South Island,
Siobhan Kay, said the practice
has 7084 patients enrolled and
a waiting list of 190.
“As patients transfer out,
individuals from the wait list
are contacted and invited to
enrol,” Kay said.
Green Cross Health also
operates the West Melton
Medical Centre, which also has
a waiting list.
“This shared workforce
model allows resources to be
flexibly allocated between
the two communities, rather
than expanding capacity solely
within Darfield.
“Based on the current
operating model, any future
increases in capacity would
more likely involve expanding
the existing practice.”
A supermarket is also
planned for either Bangor
Village or the Darfield Estates
subdivision on the south side of
the township, but the operator
has not yet been confirmed.
Currently, there is only a Four
Square in the township.
But despite concerns about
the growing population, some
business owners see it as an
opportunity.
Said Darfield Bakery owner
Nicole Lang: “There are bonuses
for things like employment
with people who want to base
themselves locally.”
On the other hand, Lang felt
it would be “really sad” if it
caused Darfield to no longer
feel like a rural community.
She said a collaborative
approach between the council,
residents and developers is
needed to ensure the country
feeling is retained.
She also felt positive about
the possibility of getting a new
supermarket.
“The supermarket will
provide options for people
and create less reliance on us
travelling to Christchurch or
Rolleston.”
Dalethorpe House café
owner Rachel Ferguson said
the township’s growth is
good for businesses and a
new supermarket would be
“fantastic”.
Darfield Village Meats owner
Blair Wards has not yet noticed
a lift in customers due to the
rising population.
If a supermarket is built,
he would expect people to
stay loyal to the existing
businesses.
When it comes to education,
the township has one primary
school and a high school which
also includes year 7 and 8
pupils.
The Hughes Developments
application has space for
another possible school in
Bangor Village if the fast-track
application is approved.
One of the biggest challenges
for Darfield High and Darfield
Primary School is not being
able to predict what their roll
growth will be in the future.
Darfield High principal Andy
England said it is at capacity
with about 840 students
enrolled.
He said planning for the
growth will be a challenge
until people buy the sections,
as he does not know how many
children they may have.
“We are keeping an eye
on things with regard to timing,

About 120 modern family homes are being built in the Ryelands subdivision.
and we have also started some
work with the Ministry of
Education on a longer-term
property planning process.
"We are not panicking, but
we are aware we need to be
building new spaces in the next
couple of years.”
England said while the
school is at capacity, it will
still accept new students from
families living within the school
zone.
Primary School principal
Meredith Devonald did not have
an opinion on whether Darfield
needs a another school.
“I know the ministry
network team is carefully
monitoring the situation and,
if two (primary) schools are
required, I believe the ministry
will recognise that.”
The school has a roll of almost
300 and received two new
classrooms last year to cater for
the growth.
Ministry director of
education for Canterbury,
Coralanne Child, said it is
monitoring the township’s
growth.
PHOTO: DANIEL ALVEY
“At this stage, there are no
further expansion projects
approved for either school.
However, if and when it is
required, we would seek
funding for additional teaching
space through future budget
processes.”
Where the homes will be built
Buttle (Kimberly Rd) 200 homes.
Frew (Greendale Rd) 450 homes.
Darfield Estates and Gilander 450 homes and a planned supermarket.
Bangor Village (Bangor Rd) 800 homes, a possible supermarket, and a
school.
Kersey Park (Creyke Rd) 140 homes.
Ryelands (Kimberly Rd) 120 homes.
Torlesse Estate (Creyke Rd) 140 homes.
Darfield ethnicity
As of the 2023 Census, Darfield’s population was made up of people
who identified as European (93.8%), while 7.6% identified as Māori.
‘We fully appreciate
we are the people
causing the growth’
› From Page 1

The township has a
population of about 3600 but it
could grow to about 9500 in the
next 10-15 years, with 2000 new
homes planned across several
subdivisions.
The family is yet to find a
local GP as the Darfield Medical
Centre is not taking new
patients.
Said Jess: “That’s one thing
that still is quite hard. We
are still not enrolled in a GP.
Especially with young kids, that
has been quite tricky.”
The family timed their move
for Harry to start school.
“That was the big push for
us. If we are going to do it,
we've got to do it before school
starts.”
A big reason for choosing
Darfield was getting value for
money when it came to a new
home. The couple sold their
1950s house in Te Awamutu for
just under what they bought
their near-new Darfield home
for.
“We just couldn't get over it.
In Darfield, the bang for your
buck was just crazy,” said Jess.
“We're probably hypocrites
in that we have moved, and we
don't want it to grow anymore.
We fully appreciate we are the
people moving that are causing
the growth.
“We love the fact we can take
the kids for a bike ride, and the
streets are quiet. We love the
fact that there is no McDonald’s
or anything like that, and the
supermarket closes at 7pm.”
If you haven’t yet provided feedback, now is your last chance to have your say on Selwyn District Council’s draft
Annual Plan 2026/27. Submissions will close on Sunday night (26 April).
All Selwyn residents are invited to share their thoughts on
what the Council is proposing for the district next financial
year. Councillors will use the feedback to help determine
what goes in the final plan.
The Council is proposing to focus on rates affordability
and core services by scaling back spending and moving
towards a more ‘user-pays’ system, where appropriate.
Three weighted average rates increase options are being
considered, 6.5%, 5.4% and 4.9% which are all lower than
previously signaled. Each option includes cost-savings of
at least $9.2 million.
The cost savings initiatives are:
1. Increase user pays charges
2. Scale back the Council’s Economic
Development Programme
3. Change the Capital Works Programme
4. Reduce grant funding
5. Reduce event funding
6. Review the District Park project
7. Reduce operating costs.
Campground changes for low-use period
We are changing which camping areas are open for the lower-use months, with
our two commercial campgrounds and Chamberlains Ford Reserve remaining
opening from May to October.
The Council has four reserves where free short-term camping is allowed, alongside
managing two commercial campgrounds at Glentunnel and
Rakaia Huts.
Over the colder months when the reserves have lower use, we give three of these
reserves a rest to allow maintenance and reduce wear and tear. The fourth reserve
and our commercial campgrounds remain open for those who do wish to camp.
From 29 April to 21 October, overnight camping will be available at Chamberlains
Ford Reserve, Glentunnel Campground and Rakaia Huts Campground. Whitecliffs
Domain, Coes Ford and Lakeside Domain will be closed during this period.
In a change from previous winters, Chamberlains Ford Reserve will remain open
while Lakeside Domain will close. This winter adjustment is being made to reduce
fuel use as well as operating costs. Concentrating camping activity at fewer sites
significantly reduces travel and servicing requirements for the reserves team, while
still providing overnight camping options across the district.
9/11 rekindles childhood dream
Proud To Be Me is a series
telling the stories of Selwyn
people. To mark Anzac Day,
Coen Lammers speaks to
Burnham-based Corporal
Charles Cornhill about his
journey to become a soldier
and life in the army
While most service men and
women join the armed forces
at an early age, you could call
Charles Cornhill a late-bloomer.
The communications
operator at Burnham Military
Camp joined the New Zealand
Army just before hitting the
big three-O to fulfil a lifelong
ambition to become a soldier
and follow in the footsteps of
his great-grandfather.
“I was just like any other kid
running around with a stick
pretending to have a gun, but
the real pull to join the army
was 9/11 when I watched those
planes hit the World Trade
Centre. I hate people suffering,
and joining the army felt like a
way to do something about it,”
he says.
Cornhill may have taken his
time to enlist but is still with the
army at 41.
“I just never got around to
it. I was a musician in Wānaka
and worked as an audio-visual
technician to make ends-meet.
I was drummer in one band,
drummer and singer in another
Charles Cornhill preparing for a mission in Iraq in 2017.
and played guitar with another
guy, so did gigs all the time,”
said Cornhill who mistakenly
thought his 30th birthday would
be the cut-off date to enlist.
“Later I found out that you
can join whenever you want,
but my wife said that I had been
talking about it long enough
and just had to get on with it.”
Cornhill found himself in
basic training with new recruits
10-12 years younger than him.
“Most of them were 18, 19 and
some even 17, but it helped that
during my time as a musician
my friend group was much
younger, so I found it easy to get
along with the young fellas.”
He admits he had some
concerns about the physical
aspects of the job, but as a
former lifeguard and national
waterpolo player, he was fit
enough to keep up.
“I am quite fit compared to
most of my friends, but training
with 18-year-olds I do tend to
be at the back most times,” said
Cornhill.
But he says the daily training
regime can be hard on a
41-year-old body.
“Some of them call me
grandpa, because I get injured
quite a lot. We do physical
training every day on the job
and I get absolutely hammered
physically. So I'm in a
permanent state of either being
injured in a way or like sore
muscle soreness.”
Cornhill says escaping to a
full-time desk job in the military
as he gets older is no longer an
option as most modern soldiers
now combine exercise with a
certain amount of desk work.
He often finds himself fending
off emails, writing policies,
training programmes or doing
other paperwork.
About two decades after he
watched Al-Qaeda, the Islamic
extremist group founded by
Osama bin Laden, destroy
the World Trade Centre on
September 11, 2001, Cornhill got
the opportunity to take a stand
against extremism. He was
deployed to Iraq for Operation
Manawa, when more than 100
New Zealand troops trained and
supported local Iraqi soldiers in
their fight against ISIS.
“It was a six-month
deployment, but more like 12
months with the PDT, the predeployment
training. We did
a lot of self-protection stuff
and medical drills. We weren't
expecting to be in combat, but
the realities of how ISIS was
operating meant (it) could
be thrust upon you in five
seconds.”
Cornhill said he was
motivated by his memories
of 9/11 and the atrocities ISIS
committed on their own people.
“It was just horrific. I have
Muslim family members and
what I saw there had nothing
to do with religion. Those guys
were just evil,” says Cornhill.
He is proud of New Zealand’s
contribution to defeating ISIS
and bringing stability to Iraq
after decades of war.
On Saturday, Cornhill will
be proudly wearing his own
service medals, as well as
DANIEL ALVEY
Teen motorsport fan and artist
Sean McCall got an up close
experience at the inaugural
Supercars round in Ruapuna.
The 15-year-old Rolleston
College student’s winning
design was displayed on the
bonnet of the Supercars’ Toyota
Supra promotional vehicle,
which was on display at the
Christchurch Super 440 from
Friday to Saturday.
Sean, who describes himself
as a “hardcore race fan”, said
he was “blown away” when
he found out his design had
been chosen as the competition
winner.
His prize – an opportunity to
meet Walkinshaw TWG Racing
team members Chaz Mostert
and Ryan Wood.
Sean said Wood was his
favourite driver.
Sean’s design featured a
range of landmarks, including
One New Zealand Stadium,
Cathedral Square and the
Bridge of Remembrance.
His favourite part of the
artwork was the Avon River.
"It just ties it all together.”
On top of the six three-day
race passes he won, Sean also
took home six Supercars’
merchandise packs and went
on a team garage tour and two
grid walks.
The couple who got their retirement back
Patricia’s internal alarm goes off
at 5am every morning. It has done
this for 50 years.
Her eyes open. The bedroom is
still dark. The house is quiet except
for the first birds starting their
chorus. She’s awake. But she’s not
really awake.
“I lie there feeling like I’ve been
hit by a truck,” the 73-year-old
explains. “My body clock would
wake me up right on time, but the
rest of me hasn’t caught up.”
At 73, Patricia still tends to
her garden, takes daily walks
through town, and catches local
shows when they come through.
Her husband, 75, does the same.
They’re the kind of couple who’ve
been married so long they walk in
sync without thinking about it.
Retirement was supposed to be
their reward for decades of work.
“We earned this,” Patricia
says. “We did everything right.
Retirement was supposed to be
when we finally got to enjoy it all.”
But somewhere around 60, sleep
started changing. Not dramatically
at first, just lighter, less restorative.
Then her husband began
experiencing the same thing. Now
instead of waking at 5am ready
for the day, they were both waking
feeling drained and not excited for
the day.
The morning walks became
harder first. Then the garden
became a chore. By lunchtime,
they’d both be exhausted.
“The worst part was watching
each other decline,” Patricia
admits. “He was grumpy. I was
snappy. We just weren’t ourselves.”
The crystallising moment came
on a Thursday evening. They’d
bought tickets to a local show.
At 6:30pm, Patricia found her
husband asleep in his chair.
“I looked at him and thought,
I’m just as exhausted. What’s the
point?”
They didn’t go. Thirty dollars
wasted.
Her husband suggested they
accept it. “Maybe this is just being
in our 70s.”
But Patricia wasn’t ready to
accept that.
Scrolling online one morning,
she found Koru Sleep, a natural
supplement made in New Zealand.
The blend of passionflower,
magnesium and valerian was
designed to support the body’s own
sleep chemistry.
“I thought it was probably
another one that promises the
world and delivers nothing,”
Patricia admits.
But she ordered a bottle. Both
decided to try it.
When her body clock went off at
5am the next morning, something
was different. She felt rested.
“Usually I feel like I’ve
been dragged through a hedge
backwards. But that morning I
actually felt okay.”
Her husband stirred beside her.
“How do you feel?” she asked.
“Actually... not bad.”
Within a week, both were
waking at 5am feeling fresh again.
The morning walks came back.
Instead of dragging themselves
around, they were walking briskly,
actually enjoying it again.
Week three, they went to a
local show. Not only did they stay
awake, they enjoyed it.
“We’re actually living our
retirement now,” Patricia reflects.
“Not just surviving it. We are
ourselves again. When you’re
rested, everything becomes
possible.”
Deal over concert ground issue
BY GEOFF SLOAN
The promoter of Selwyn Sounds
and Lincoln Rugby Club have
done a deal over a $9000 bill to
help get the No 1 field playable
because of damage caused by the
concert.
Selwyn Times revealed three
weeks ago the rugby club’s frustration
over damage to the No
1 and No 2 grounds and apparent
delay by the council to start
repairs, which has impacted the
start of the season.
Damage means the No 1 field
needs to be realigned for it to be
played on. There will also be new
goalposts.
Work is scheduled to be finished
for the Lincoln Stags colts
match with the
Waihora Longhorns
at 3pm on
Saturday.
Rugby club
president Kym
Townsend said
the goalposts cost
$18,000. The club
and council are
paying $9000 each,
and the council
David Parlane
will pay for the realignment. That
cost has not been determined.
About 8000 people packed Lincoln
Domain’s main two fields
for the sold out Ronan Keatingheadlined
March 6 concert. Wet
weather leading up to and after
the concert meant heavy vehicles
setting up and packing down the
event damaged the fields, rendering
them unplayable.
Spectators will be able to watch the match on the No 1 ground, complete with new goalposts, from the clubrooms on Saturday. The
‘main stand’ on the back ground which has been used for matches in recent weeks.
Townsend said on Monday
afternoon he and Selwyn Sounds
co-promoter David Parlane of 3
Coins Gentlemen had come to an
agreement. It came after Selwyn
Times questioned both parties
over the issue.
On Monday morning Parlane
told Selwyn Times the realignment
of the ground was “news
to me”.
Said Townsend: “(We) got a little
bit, so that’s good. It is going
to assist with costs incurred,” he
said.
The agreement appears
to come outside the $15,000
already paid by 3 Coins Gentlemen
to repair Lincoln Domain.
Council executive director
community services and
facilities Denise Kidd said
repair work for the damage
from Selwyn Sounds had been
completed and the hirer (3
Coins Gentlemen) “fully covered
the costs of around $15,000”.
Townsend said it had been
“a hectic last three weeks with
council meetings, trying to
figure out what we’re going to
do,” to get the ground back for
rugby.
The damage forced the club to
shift its games to the No 3 and 4
grounds, a distance away from
the clubrooms, behind a large
hedge and with a separate car
park to the main one.
“The big impact is the loss of
our bar takings, and our sponsors
signage is not really being
seen properly.
“We’re effectively shifting the
entire field. But it’s costing us
a fair chunk of change. We’re
getting a better set of posts out
of it, but it wasn’t really in the
budget,” Townsend said.
Parlane said part of the agreement
with council was to get the
fields back to the same condition
as they found them.
“That has been done,” he said.
Townsend said the No 2 ground
will still be unusable “for at least
another month” after work to
repair and resow the grass.
Last week, council cut the
hedge by the tennis courts to give
better vehicle access for events at
Lincoln Domain.
Couple’s wedding a good
chance to put down roots
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Brass band bring the trophies
home from national champs
Rolleston Brass picked
up a national title at the
New Zealand Brass Band
Championships in Wellington.
The group won the C grade
at the event, which saw 40
bands compete across five
grades, making it the largest
competition in 45 years.
Rolleston Brass came home
with several trophies after
winning the sacred item, C
grade test piece, own choice
selection, champion C grade
band, and champion C grade
conductor categories.
Musical director Raynor
Martin said he felt a lot of
pressure in the lead up to the
championships. When they
won, he “exhaled in relief”.
“I guess we had an
expectation on us to do well
and, not only that, I had that
from people within the band
who wanted to win,” he said.
Rolleston Brass compete
in national and regional
competitions, and feature at
local concerts and community
events throughout the year.
They earned an aggregate
score of 241 points, in front of
the Rangiora RSA Club Band in
second with 231.
The national championships
were held in April, rather than
July, this year, which Martin
said was a challenge due to the
player’s fitness levels.
“I had to rethink the way I
approached rehearsals.”
But once they were on stage,
he felt “pretty confident”.
“It was a mixture of
excitement and nervousness. I
felt like we had done that work,
but there’s always a part of me
that’s nervous about screwing
up,” he said.
Martin wants the band to
keep working towards next
year’s national championships
at Invercargill.
“There is a high chance
we’re going up to a different
grade, which does come with
challenges,” he said.
“So I guess I’m going to just
keep doing what I’m doing and
keep encouraging people to
want to be there and want to
work hard.”
Tom Maxwell and Camilla
Gardiner’s wedding guests
swapped suits and dresses for
boots and spades, helping create
a lasting legacy before the couple
tied the knot.
On the day before their
wedding, the couple and about
40 guests planted close to 300
trees in Lincoln’s wetlands.
“It actually turned out really
well because now we have an
area we can walk by whenever
we want, and we know that was
planted by all our family and
friends that came,” Maxwell said.
The planting was supported by
Te Ara Aki Greenway Trust and
Lincoln Envirotown Trust, which
supplied plants, tools and advice
on the day.
Maxwell said they were
“amazed” at how good the trusts
were to work with.
The couple have lived near
the wetlands since 2021 after
meeting at Lincoln University in
2015.
“Camilla came to New Zealand
to study at Lincoln, and I was a
postdoc, and we actually met at
the Lincoln University gym.
“I was one of the fitness
instructors, and she came to the
class, so that’s how we first met.”
Tom Maxwell and Camilla Gardiner decided they wanted to include a planting day
at Lincoln Wetlands before their wedding.
West Melton chasing first win
under Thursday night lights
BY SAM COUGHLAN
West Melton coach Michael
James believes tomorrow
night’s combined country clash
with Saracens is the perfect
chance for his side to break
their duck and secure their first
win of the season.
After three narrow losses
– including Saturday’s 48-38
defeat to Ohoka – James said
the Saracens game provided a
good opportunity to get on the
board.
“We need to get our season
under way – it’s definitely a
target.
“We need to really put it to
them this weekend, get that
first win and then get some
momentum going
forward,” he said.
Despite a
hat-trick to
fullback Jackson
Youngman, a
young West
Melton side were
unable to keep
up with Ohoka,
who are third in Michael James
Pool B.
Still, James said there were
encouraging signs in defeats by
just two points to Lincoln, eight
to Ashburton Celtic and 10 on
Saturday.
“When things are going
wrong, the guys are figuring it
out and sorting it. We’re making
the improvements we need, but
just not quite closing out games
Hooker Sam Hemmingson-White takes on the Ohoka defence on Saturday.
West Melton fullback Jackson Youngman crosses for one of his three tries against Ohoka.
which is costing us.
“We’re playing some good
rugby at times, we’ve just got to
play it for 80 minutes.”
Saracens are also searching
for their first win after a 69-12
loss to Ashley at the weekend.
“I know they've been
struggling a little bit but they
generally still have a pretty
good forward pack, based on
previous seasons,” James said.
Only three Ellesmere teams
will be in action this week, with
a truncated round due to Anzac
weekend.
All matches will be played
on Thursday night, with West
Melton hosting Saracens,
Lincoln travelling to Rakaia
and Southbridge taking on
Ashburton Celtic.
“In previous years we’ve gone
pretty good in night games,”
James said.
“The big thing would be the
Foster Park fortress key for Selwyn
in pursuit of Southern League points
“We need to really
put it to them this
weekend, get that first
win and then get some
momentum going
forward.”
Michael James
preparation for the guys getting
there from work at different
times and making sure they’re
eating properly.
“But it’s not too bad – they
train at night anyway so it’s no
different than that.”
James is also looking
forward to a return home, with
West Melton playing at the
domainfor the first time since
run at Foster Park against
Nomads.
The Stallions have yet to lose
at home this year, drawing with
Christchurch United and beating
Dunedin City Royals.
Away from home, they’ve lost
all three matches, including a 6-0
loss to Nelson Suburbs on Sunday.
The result leaves Selwyn in
ninth, just one point above lastplaced
Wānaka.
Captain Liam Coleman is also
Selwyn’s two Miles Toyota
Championship teams will face
off in pre-season for the first
time tomorrow night.
Rolleston College and Lincoln
Combined – made up of Lincoln
High, Ellesmere College and
Darfield High players – are
ramping up preparations for the
schoolboy rugby season.
They meet at 7pm at Rhodes
Park, Tai Tapu, less than a
month out from the May 16
season opener.
Rolleston enter the first XV
competition as a standalone side
for the first time after breaking
away from the former Selwyn
Combined team.
That combined side, which
featured all four schools,
competed in the top-tier
Premiership and finished ninth
last year before the split.
Now rebranded as Lincoln
Combined, the team were
relegated following Rolleston’s
departure.
Both sides begin their
campaigns on May 16, with
Lincoln hosting Roncalli Aoraki
Combined while Rolleston have
the bye.
They will meet for the first
time in competition in round six
on June 20 at Rolleston College.
Prebbleton FC are now a
standalone club after securing
official affiliation with Mainland
Football.
Since entering Mainland competitions
in 2019, the club had
operated in partnership with
Christchurch United and High
School Old Boys, with players registering
through
those clubs while
forming Prebbleton
teams within
them.
Founded in 2004,
Prebbleton previously
competed
in the Canterbury
Sunday Soccer
League before Hayden Smith
making the step
into the Mainland system.
President Hayden Smith said
becoming a standalone club was
a massive boost.
“It’s hugely positive. We can
just grow and grow now from
strength to strength.”
Smith said only in recent
years had the club considered
affiliating in its own right, as
its numbers and ambitions
increased.
“We can be part of more competitions
now, we can enter
Prebbleton has enjoyed major growth in recent years and now fields teams in nearly every junior and youth age group.
different teams, look at even
setting up our own academy
eventually.
“It just means more opportunities
for us now going forward.”
The club has expanded rapidly,
relocating to Kakaha Park when
it opened in 2023.
It now fields six senior social
teams – the top side playing in
division 5 – and junior teams
across almost every age group,
including girls’ sides at under 13
and under 16 level.
“You know what Prebbleton’s
like – how many more people
there are and kids and families.
We’ve got so many teams running
this year,” Smith said.
“And as we’ve grown, we’ve
needed more volunteers. The
community has stepped up and
helped with coaching, refereeing,
managing, marking fields and
everything, it has been great.”
In 2024, the club debuted in the
Chatham Cup, New Zealand’s premier
knockout competition.
Playing under the High School
Old Boys banner, a side made up
entirely of Prebbleton players lost
2-0 to Halswell United in the preliminary
round at Kakaha Park.
Smith said the club would “100
percent” be returning to the cup
next year, under their own name.
“We just wanted to leave it this
year, but next year that is definitely
something we’ll do.
“And we’ll be entering more
tournaments with our younger
age groups as well.”
Lions tournament
raises $25,000
for charity
The Malvern Lions Annual Golf
Tournament was held on Friday
at the Greendale golf course.
The day dawned with a light
frost and the wind got up about
lunchtime but as the afternoon
went on the breeze dropped
and it was perfect for golf.
Thanks to the Greendale club
for presenting the course in
such a great order, and for the
hospitality shown to our players
and the Lions helpers.
There were 150 players in the
Ambrose competition.
The organisers would like to
thank everyone for their efforts
to make the day a great success.
The recipient of the money
raised this year was the Sheffield
Memorial Pool, which is
operated by the Tawera Community
Trust.
The funds will go towards
the replacement of the pool's
covers and assisting with the
maintenance and operation of
the pool. The pool committee
put on a superb morning and
afternoon tea with a great variety
and plenty to go around.
The raffle table was impressive
with 190 names called out
and still prizes left for the freefor-all
at the end. Few people
would have gone home empty
handed. A huge thank you must
go out to our sponsors as we
could not have achieved what
we did without them.
We were able to do a presentation
to the Sheffield
Swimming Pool Committee for
$25,000 on the day.
Thanks from the trust
The Sheffield Memorial Pool
was honoured to be the chosen
local community charity for the
Malvern Lions Club fundraising
golf tournament at Greendale
Golf Course - and what an
incredibly successful day it was.
An outstanding $25,000 was
raised, and we are sincerely
grateful to the Malvern Lions
Club, along with all the players,
sponsors and supporters
who contributed to this fantastic
result. The funds will go
towards the pool’s operating
costs and, most importantly,
replacing our disintegrating
pool covers, a vital investment
in keeping the pool running for
the community.
A special thank you to Hamish,
Lynda and Murray, who
made the preparation process
seamless and were supportive
every step of the way.
Their efforts were greatly
Malvern Lions member Richard Hindle shows how it’s done on the course. Right –
The players gathering before the tournament and afterwards at the prize-giving.
appreciated. We strongly
encourage other local charitable
and community organisations
to put their name forward for
future Malvern Lions events.
The stunning conditions at the
Greendale Golf Club and the
great spirit of community meant
it was truly a day to remember.
Take back control: Invest in solar power
Crazy times. With so much happening
on the global scale that negatively
affects us here in little ole New Zealand,
there is also one key way you can take
back control of your spending and
environmental impact, and even benefit
from recent incentives as you do so!
Green loans
Many NZ banks now offer a “green
loan”, which can be used to finance solar
power and electric vehicles. Green loans
help ordinary kiwis spend money now, to
save even more later. They’re often 0–1%
interest, attached to your mortgage, and
with a shorter loan time of 3 to 5 years.
Increased export limits for residential
set-ups
The Electricity Authority is leading,
and local lines companies across NZ are
following. In early April, The Authority
announced that lines companies must
increase their default export to 10kW for
straightforward, small-scale distributed
generation, such as household solar and
battery systems. In other words, if your
household solar generation and storage
is connected to local networks, you can
export more power and benefit from
cheaper prices.
And the bad news….
Well, that keeps coming. Electricity
prices have climbed steadily since 2023,
and Consumer NZ is warning of doubledigit
electricity increases this year, well
ahead of general inflation. Add in the
effects of the current fuel crisis, which is
increasing retail prices across the board,
let alone the import costs to get goods
shipped here, if that’s even possible at
any given point in time. With no end
to the bad news in sight, securing your
solar install now is the smart way to take
back control.
Why choose Solar Alps
Based in Christchurch and working
across Selwyn, we are a locally-founded
solar company with over 15 years of
combined industry experience. Solar
isn’t an add-on to our services, it’s the
total focus of our work. And here’s the
really important thing… unlike many
companies, we handle every installation
ourselves – no contractors involved! You
will know who you’re dealing with at all
times, throughout the design, installation
and sign-off.
We hold a select group of products in
stock, from various suppliers, that we
trust for quality and longevity. Order
now, and your kit is right here already.
HOME PROFESSIONALS
Clear views, clear benefits:
professional window cleaners
Having clean windows makes such a
difference to how your home feels. This
is especially so in the cooler months
when we’re looking outside more than
going out and enjoying it, and need to
make the most of all the light we can
get. But no matter how uplifting the
Before
result, somehow window cleaning stays
firmly at the bottom of the to-do list. So
if you’re in a position to be able to hire a
professional window cleaner, you’ll soon
find that the benefits go beyond simply
having sparkling glass.
First of all, they’ll do a much better
After
job than you can. Professional window
cleaners have better tools, and know
how to use them properly. They
understand the quantities of water
and solutions to suit each context and
use specialised techniques to achieve
a streak-free finish. They know how to
tackle stubborn grime, mineral deposits
and hard-to-reach corners, and will
leave your windows looking clearer and
brighter than you had imagined possible.
The best professionals will also go the
extra mile and offer to clean all glass
surfaces within your home – mirrors,
glass panes in internal doors, even
shower doors if you’re lucky – ticking
more jobs off your to-do list.
There are also some important
practical reasons to hire the
professionals. Safety might be a factor. If
you’re not comfortable reaching above
your head, climbing and balancing on
ladders, carrying heavy buckets of water,
waving a long-handled pole around or
reaching into awkward angles, then
hand the job over. If you have guests
arriving, or are putting your house
on the market, clean windows give an
instant lift to people’s impressions of the
property. And taking a longterm view,
dirt, salt and environmental pollutants
can build up on glass surfaces and
frames over time, so regular professional
cleaning can extend the lifespan of your
windows.
Most of all though, hiring a
professional window cleaner is a way to
treat yourself and save valuable time.
Professionals are strong, experienced
and fast – they’ll get the job done before
you know it! Instead of spending hours
scrubbing and polishing, or trying to
wrangle your family and housemates
into pitching in, you and the household
can get on with other priorities or simply
relax.
ANZAC DAY
SATURDAY APRIL 25, 2026
A symbol of remembrance
and sacrifice
By Fiona Robinson
What is one of the most recognisable symbols of
remembrance leading up to Anzac Day? It is the red
poppy. Worn each April in New Zealand and Australia,
and at sites around the world commemorating
ANZAC Day, it honours the soldiers who served and
those who lost their lives in war.
After the fighting across Europe during WWI, bright
red poppies were among the first flowers to grow in
the mud and soil of the battlefields. These flowers
became a powerful symbol of remembrance after
the famous poem by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel
John McCrae, “In Flanders Fields,” which described
poppies growing among the graves of fallen soldiers.
The red poppy, or Flanders poppy, also came to
represent the sacrifice of soldiers in campaigns such
as the Gallipoli Campaign. The red poppy became
a symbol of the bravery and sacrifice of those who
served during the Gallipoli campaign of 1915 and is
central to the ANZAC story.
While the first official Poppy Day in New Zealand was
planned for Armistice Day in 1921, due to a delay in
the shipment of silk poppies from France, it was held
on 24 April 1922, the day before Anzac Day.
For many years, red plastic and paper poppies
were made in Christchurch by members of the
Christchurch Royal New Zealand Returned and
Services’ Association (RNZRSA) and were worn
throughout New Zealand. However, as of this year,
the RNZRSA will sell a new sustainable poppy made
from biodegradable paper, manufactured by the
Royal British Legion in Kent, England, at this year’s
Poppy Day Appeal.
Today, poppies are sold each year in the lead-up
to Anzac Day during the annual Poppy Appeal
organised by the RNZRSA. Volunteers stand in
towns and shopping areas, selling the small red
poppies that people wear as a visible sign of respect.
The money raised helps support veterans and their
families, including today’s soldiers, assisting with
welfare, housing, health services, and community
programmes. In communities across the country,
including those throughout Selwyn, buying
and wearing a poppy has become a simple but
meaningful way for people to show their gratitude.
The red poppy is a small symbol, but it is a powerful
reminder of courage, sacrifice, and remembrance,
and remains part of New Zealand’s history.
Lest we forget.
Please donate
to our Poppy
collectors across
Selwyn and help
support our
veterans
Plenty to do as
winter’s chill
approaches
Expert advice on what to do in your garden this week
VEGETABLES
Lettuces are thought of as a
summer vegetable, but the seed
of some hardy types, such as
the old French variety Merveille
des Quatre Saisons, can be sown
under cloches or under glass to
make slow growth until longer
days and more sunshine return.
The soil must be well drained
and supplied with plenty of
organic material, because
lettuces are gross feeders.
Jerusalem artichoke tubers
are now ready to harvest. A
new crop can be planted at
any time from now until early
spring.
If you want to try them, look
in the supermarket or farmers
market for large, light-coloured
ones without deep eyes in the
tubers.
Artichokes respond well to
liberal manuring and their top
growth, which can reach 3m,
provides a useful shelter for
tender crops.
The drawback with this
member of the sunflower
family is it can spread rapidly
and become invasive, but
growing it in a stack of old tyres
can overcome the problem.
For the best tubers, grow it in
rich, cool soil. One plant should
yield about 1.5kg of tubers.
FLOWERS
Organic material accessible to
urban gardeners is limited.
Sawdust is a source of plant
food, especially on heavy clay
soils, and can be used as a
mulch between rhododendrons,
azaleas and camellias.
Alpine bulbs can be used more widely in the garden. Hoop petticoat daffodils
(Narcissus bulbicodium) look best when grouped and will gradually spread out if
well-spaced at planting time.
Jerusalem artichoke tubers are now ready to harvest. A new crop can be planted at any time from now until early spring. If you want
to try them, look in the supermarket or farmers market for large, light-coloured ones without deep eyes in the tubers. PHOTOS: GETTY
Sawdust is not well-balanced,
though, and putting it on the
flower border can do more
harm than good, as it locks up
large quantities of nitrogen as it
decomposes.
The best way to use sawdust
for general garden purposes is
putting layers in the compost
heap, watering it well then
sprinkling a layer of poultry
manure, sulphate of ammonia
or dried blood on top.
Mixed with other ingredients
in the compost heap, sawdust
does make a useful addition to
the humus supply of the garden.
Autumn leaves, straw,
haystack bottom and pine
needles are other useful forms
of organic material which
should be broken down in the
compost heap.
Although once considered
only for rockery use, alpine
bulbs can be used more widely
in the garden.
Hoop petticoat daffodils
(Narcissus bulbicodium) look
best when grouped and will
gradually spread out if wellspaced
at planting time.
Anemone fulgens produces
rich, scarlet flowers in late
spring; Chionodoxa, or glory of
the snow, flowers in late August
and September .
Eranthis, or winter aconite,
is the earliest of all, with bright
yellow flowers set in a circle of
shiny green leaves.
Although cream is most
common, dog’s tooth violets
come in a range of colours and
prefer shaded positions with
plenty of leaf mould through
the soil.
Miniature bulbous irises are
attractive spring flowers.
Iris reticulata, flowering in
late winter, grows about 15cm
tall, with flowers in blue shades
from the pale Cantab to violetcoloured
JS Dijt.
FRUIT
If you have not ordered new
fruit trees and prepared the
ground for them, do not delay.
As well as trees, soft-fruit
shrubs, plants and canes are
also available now.
Older gooseberry varieties,
susceptible to an American
mildew inadvertently
introduced in 1984, have almost
disappeared but two English
bred gooseberries, Invicta and
Pax, are resistant to the disease.
Like gooseberries, red,
black and white currants
belong to the Ribes genus and
although American mildew
(Sphaerotheca morsuvae) has
been found on these fruits, it
is not as devastating as it is on
gooseberries.
Kia’s Tasman making a
big splash in ute market
Kia is backing its new ute, the
Tasman, to successfully enter
uncharted waters and make a
big enough impact to establish
itself as a genuine alternative
to the dominant players in the
market.
It’s a segment the company
has long wanted to crack.
Now, with a strong line-up of
successful models behind it,
Kia’s credibility and sales are at
an all-time high – making this
the ideal time to take that leap.
That leap is helped by a
willingness to be inventive
and bold, stepping away from
traditional ute formulas to offer
something genuinely different.
It achieves this through
purposeful exterior and
interior design, along with
leading technology.
It also hits a home run with
what Kia claims is a best-inclass
1173-litre cargo capacity,
underlining the Tasman’s
practicality and versatility.
Advanced chassis and
suspension technology make it
a far better drive, both on and
off-road, than I was expecting.
So how has Kia managed to
produce such an impressive
first attempt seemingly out of
nowhere?
The short answer is more
than five decades of experience
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
developing special-purpose
vehicles, including off-roaders.
That background has
provided the foundation for
the Tasman to handle the dual
roles of workhorse and leisure
vehicle.
Its bold, and at times
contentious, blocky design
shows Kia has chosen to forge
its own path rather than play it
safe by mimicking rivals.
For now, there is just one
body style – a double cab
wellside – but double and single
cab chassis variants are set to
follow in the coming months.
The current range starts
with the keenly priced $52,690
TX and climbs to $79,690 for
the range-topping X-Pro – a
significant ask for a newcomer
with no track record in this
segment.
In its defence, the X-Pro
delivers superior off-road
performance thanks to 28mm
more ground clearance and
a high level of equipment,
including 18-inch gloss black
alloy wheels fitted with allterrain
tyres.
The model tested here was
the mid-spec TXS, priced at
$62,690.
There is a single engine
option for our market: Kia’s
proven 154kW 2.2-litre turbo
diesel paired with an eightspeed
automatic. It produces
441Nm of torque – less than
many rivals – and doesn’t offer
a huge amount of low-speed
pulling power for a vehicle of
this size and weight.
With many competitors now
pushing 500Nm or more, the
Tasman is slightly off the pace
on paper, reflected in a leisurely
0-100km/h time of 10.4 seconds.
That said, from behind the
wheel it feels quicker than those
figures suggest.
Throttle response and lowspeed
acceleration are adequate,
if not outstanding, while the
smooth-shifting eight-speed
transmission performs well.
Kia has also thought through
the practical details, including
waterproofing key engine
components for water crossings.
The air intake, for example,
is positioned inside the front
fender, allowing the Tasman
to wade through water up to
800mm deep at speeds of up to
7km/h.
Inside, there is generous
space, with ample head and
shoulder room and a classleading
940mm of rear-seat
legroom.
Dual wireless charging pads
and hidden storage bins beneath
the rear seats add a further 33
litres of storage.
Taking centre stage in the
huge cabin is a state-of-the-art
12.3-inch + 5-inch + 12.3-
inch panoramic widescreen
technology that gives the
driver and passenger access to
vehicle controls and advanced
infotainment options.
Rating out of 10: Performance 7, Handling 8, Build Quality 7, Comfort 8, Space
8, Styling 6, Fuel Economy; on road test average consumption 9.8L /100km,
Value for money 7
Safety: ANCAP crash rating, 5 Star, June 2025 testing
Price $62,690.
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
As with other Kia models,
the Tasman incorporates
the brand’s sustainability
initiatives, including bioplastics
in the crash pad, seats
made from recycled PET fabric
and bio-based synthetic leather,
and carpets produced from
recycled materials.
Safety is another strong suit,
with Kia’s latest Advanced
Driver Assistance Systems
(ADAS) on board. Features
include lane keep assist, blind
spot collision warning and
Highway Driving Assist 2
(HDA 2), which also integrates
trailer profile functionality to
improve towing stability and
performance.
A body-on-frame chassis
provides rigidity, stability
and durability, while double
wishbone front suspension
improves ride and handling. At
the rear, a rigid axle with leaf
springs ensures the strength
needed for heavy loads.
The suspension has been
tuned to handle harsh off-road
terrain, but it also performs
impressively on the road.
Long-distance driving is
made more comfortable by
improved sound insulation
and additional wind-sealing,
resulting in a quieter, more
refined cabin with fewer
vibrations.
Despite its size and weight,
the Tasman keeps body roll
well in check. Even when
pushed through tight, twisty
roads or dealing with uneven
surfaces, it remains composed
and predictable.
In fact, it’s one of the bestriding
and best-handling
utes I’ve driven in the past 12
months.
It feels stable and confident
through corners, with
responsive steering that keeps
driver and road well connected.
A brief off-road test hinted at
strong capability, leaving the
impression there is still much
more to explore.
Flushing in the 21st century
Pop Quiz: When was the first flush toilet used?
We don’t often think too much about them. We
like to make up neat names for them. The Privy
Council; The Supersitty; The Study. In Maori it is
the wharepaku. If you are old school it’s the WC.
Perhaps it is being a little squeamish about such
things, but often the toilets are overlooked when
buying a house, or simply considered mundane
necessities when renovating. But as with everything
else, toilets have evolved, and should be given
dutiful consideration. After all, they are heavily
used in every house.
The concept of the toilet has been around a long
time, and in some respects has not changed. Waste
goes in and is flushed away, to be forgotten by
most. Innovations, however, roll on and the humble
lavatory has adapted to human advances and needs.
Simple adaptations such as comfort height toilets
make life easier. These are toilets up to several
centimetres higher than conventional ones. Even
such a small height increase greatly increases the
ease and comfort of use for the elderly, pregnant
women, and anybody with back or leg/knee
problems.
Whether an S-trap or a P-trap toilet (you must
check which you have if you are renovating as each
is plumbed differently), the general design and
shape of the bowl has improved sitting comfort.
Softclose lids are quiet and convenient.
If you are not connected to a septic tank or
sewerage main, waterless toilets are an option. They
save on water and turn waste into compost. They
require a lot of maintenance, but are the longdrop
of the 21st Century. See www.smarterhomes.org.nz
With everything from phones to cars getting
smarter, smart toilets were bound to happen. They
include features such as touchless flushing. The
toilet either senses when you have moved away, or
incorporate a hand wave sensor. Some use a remote
control that can be operated by smart phone. Most
are self-cleaning. Integrated bidets with air drying
sensors are common, as are sensors to warn of
potential problems such as tank leaks. Heated
seating, nightlights, and even Bluetooth sound
systems are also common.
Smart toilets require installation by qualified
professionals, plumbers and electricians.
You may not require a Hundertwasser style
toilet in your home (but wouldn’t that be fun?),
but you will want something
efficient, functional,
and aesthetically
matched to the décor.
From transparent seats
complete with goldfish
to wall hung machines
more technically
advanced than any
other appliance in the
house, toilets have come
a long way.
And the first flush toilet? Primitive versions,
using a drainage system rivers, date back 5000
years! Modern toilets similar to ours were used
by Queen Elizabeth I (16th Century) and were in
common use after that.
Home heating
– electricity, gas or wood?
How you heat your home depends on a
number of factors. Figuring out the best
way to heat your home continues to be a
matter for debate.
Several things are undisputed.
A warm, dry home is essential
for comfort and good health,
good insulation dramatically
increases the efficiency
of any heating system
and ventilation is an
important consideration.
Most homes are
heated by electricity, gas,
or wood. The World Health
Organisation recommends a
temperature of 18 deg C for indoor
living areas, and slightly less for
bedrooms. It recommends slightly
higher temperatures for vulnerable
people – the elderly and small children.
Studies have shown that indoor
temperatures below 12 degrees can
disrupt sleep.
Among all these considerations,
how you heat your home is a matter
of personal choice, with many options
available.
Heat pumps are generally the most
common and cost-effective form of
home heating in New Zealand. Used
properly, they heat quickly and are
convenient. However, you need to have
the right sized unit for the area and
they don’t work when electricity is not
available. They tend to be room-specific
but ducted heat pumps are becoming
more popular and are cost-effective,
especially in new builds, but can also be
installed into established homes.
Modern wood burners may be the
closest you can get to an open-fire feel,
but are much more efficient. Wood is
generally a renewable fuel, and if you
have a cheap or free supply, a wood
burner may be the least expensive
heating option. They heat large areas
and are not dependent on electricity but
there is the chopping and stacking to be
done, flues need to be cleaned regularly
and older models can contribute to
air pollution and may violate strict air
quality regulations – www.mfe.govt.nz
has detailed information regarding this.
Pellet fires are typically more efficient
than wood burners but can have a
smaller output. They require electricity
but some have a battery backup and
they are thermostatically controlled
with timers. These must comply with
regulations which are also detailed
on the Ministry for the Environment
website.
Gas heating is common and
convenient. Central heating systems can
be zone controlled and provide warm
air circulation. Flued gas heaters are
best, as unflued and portable gas heaters
produce lots of moisture and emit
pollutants that can be unsafe. Flued gas
heating systems can be installed in most
homes. They are fast heating and are
relatively inexpensive to run. However
gas is not a renewable resource and
prices can vary widely.
The greatest source of energy is
actually free. Harnessing the sun can
dramatically reduce heating costs and
is the most environmentally friendly
way to heat your home. Passive heating
combines insulation with good design,
accomplished more effectively in new
builds but also able to be incorporated
into existing homes.
Getting the sun’s warmth into your
home is a function of the design; keeping
it in is a function of the insulation. There
is a wealth of information online as
passive heating becomes normative in
the design and building industry.
Websites such as energywise.govt.
nz and smarterhomes.org.nz have
comprehensive information on and
tips for, heating your home in the
colder months.
in one that’s going to serve you well.
These days there are more options
than ever when it comes to beds, from
traditional divans to super smart
AI-powered beds, so choosing the right
one can become a little daunting, but
understanding the range of bed styles
and features can help you make the
right choice.
Keep it classic
Traditional bed frames have stood the
test of time for good reason. Wooden
frames in warm oak, walnut, or even a
painted finish bring a natural texture
and laid back charm, while
metal frames can add a
vintage feel to the room.
Traditional styles are also
super versatile, meaning
you’re free to inject some
personality with bedding,
pillows, throws, and
accessories.
If you want a softer and
dreamier vibe to your sleep
space, then upholstered
bed frames could be a great
choice. Bedrooms are a
great place to experiment in colour,
so don’t shy away from bold prints, or
sumptuous velvet to really make an
impact, or keep things neutral for a
calming and serene space.
Divine divans
Divan beds are perfect for a sleek,
minimalist look as they usually
eliminate the need for a box spring.
A divan is the ideal choice if you’re
short on space, as they often come with
handy storage underneath or a lift up
base where you can stash away linens,
clothing, or seasonal items, without
compromising on style.
Have it your way
Adjustable beds have grown in
popularity in recent years and it’s not
hard to see why. These beds allow
you to elevate the head, feet, or both,
offering customised comfort for
sleeping, reading, or watching TV. Some
models even allow the two sides of the
bed to be adjusted independently, so
you and your partner can get the best
night’s sleep without compromise.
Modern designs are much more
attractive than their predecessors, and
often look just like any other bed frame,
meaning you’re free to style however
you want.
There are even AI-powered beds, that
adjust themselves while you’re in bed
and can monitor your health and track
your sleep.
Double duty daybeds
For rooms where space is at a
premium, daybeds and sofa beds offer
a great multifunctional solution. Sofa
beds provide a seamless switch up
between living space to sleeping area,
making them great for spare rooms or
smaller apartments.
Daybeds offer a similar dual-purpose
function but usually come with a more
relaxed look and can be styled with
cushions and throws to provide both
sitting and sleeping.
