Mum and daughter drugs case
‘You have
to pull your
head in’
says judge
BY AL WILLIAMS
A woman who was supplying
drugs for her daughter to sell
has been told to pull her head
in by a judge.
“You and your daughter are
part of an insidious industry,
there is a real vicious cycle,
you are ambivalent about
treatment; you said you would
do it if you have to, you have
to pull your head in,” Judge
Michael Crosbie told Tina Bom.
The 58-year-old and her
34-year-old daughter Stacey
Lee Bom were both sentenced
in the district court on charges
of offering to supply Class A
drugs.
And it wasn’t just Tina Bom
who was in for a scolding.
Judge Crosbie told Stacey
Bom that drug offending is
wreaking havoc on communities
and she was naive if she
didn’t think her own children
were aware of what was going
on.
The summary of facts
showed Stacey Bom bought
and sold the drugs to multiple
people between March and
August 2024.
It started when she bought
7g of methamphetamine and
then distributed more than 20g
of the drug in the following
months.
By August, she was reaching
out to her mother for the
drugs.
“Can u sort me 2 8 balls
today, I need to know coz it’s
not for me,” she messaged
Tina.
Her mother responded, saying
she could, and asked her
daughter to pick her up.
From there, Tina Bom was
captured messaging her daughter
and others multiple times
Stacey Lee Bom (left) and Tina Louise Bom head into the district court for sentencing.
over the next five months.
She supplied them
with various quantities
ranging from .25g to 3.5g of
methamphetamine.
By early January 2025, she
Home detention sentences for meth offending
› From Page 1
When police raided her
house in mid-January 2025,
they found six cannabis plants
in a walled-off area of the
garage, inside a grow tent with
a hanging light, and $2500 cash
in a metal case next to her bed.
While Judge Crosbie had
earlier given a sentence
indication of home detention to
the women, he said he wanted
to be clear it was one step
down from imprisonment.
“You won’t be going to
prison; it is only on the
margins.
“Unlike your daughter, you
have a little bit of history as
far as drug offending goes,
the probation report says you
normalised the offending.
“I think your attitude sucks,”
he said.
Tina Bom argued the $2500
found in the metal case next
to her bed was inheritance
money, but Judge Crosbie
wasn’t willing to accept the
submission.
“It’s a bit cheeky too.”
Judge Crosbie temporarily
adjourned her sentencing and
moved on to her daughter.
He told Stacey Bom she had
been struggling in emergency
accommodation with two
children, and was in an
abusive relationship with their
father.
He said she had no offending
history and had been using
methamphetamine daily.
There was an entrenched
history of substance abuse and
a number of developmental
issues, the judge said.
“The offending occurred over
an extended period of time.
“You, being a mother,
appearing with your mother;
this offending is continuing
to wreak havoc on our
communities.
“If you think children aren’t
aware, then you might be
really naive.
“Once drugs leave your
hands, you have no control
over whose hands they end up
in; the person you supply them
to might supply them to kids.”
Judge Crosbie sentenced her
to 12 months’ home detention.
Tina Bom then returned to
the courtroom and accepted
the order for forfeiture of the
money to the Crown.
Judge Crosbie sentenced
her to nine months’ home
detention.
‘Devoted
father’ dies
in car crash
A man who died after a twovehicle
crash near Burnham last
week has been remembered as
a devoted husband, father and
great friend.
Emergency services were called
to the crash on State Highway
1 near Burnham shortly before
7.30am on Tuesday, April 14.
Keelan Breeze McCann, 30, was
killed on State
Highway 1 just
before 7.30am on
April 14. Another
person was taken
to hospital with
serious injuries,
where they remain
in a now stable
condition.
A Givealittle
page set up to support
the family of
Keegan Breeze
McCann
McCann described him as a great
friend, son, devoted husband and
a loving father to his daughters.
“He was someone who worked
hard, looked after his family, and
always had time for the people
around him,” the page read.
The page, set up by a long-time
friend, read that McCann’s young
family was “now facing life without
their husband and dad far too
soon”.
Money raised from the page
would go towards supporting
McCann’s children with school
and daycare expenses, day-today
living, funeral costs and time
away from work for his wife as
the family grieved.
Mauger rejects resident’s pong claim
BY ANNA SARGENT
Mayor Phil Mauger is rejecting
claims his council only acted
on the stench from the firedamaged
Bromley wastewater
treatment plant after it affected
the whole city.
The pong has
plagued eastern
suburbs since a
fire at the plant
in 2021, but it got
markedly worse
this year and
wafted over large
swathes of the
city.
Phil Mauger
Earlier this month city councillors
backed a $7.7 million
plan to add 16 more aerators to
the sewage ponds to tackle the
smell.
Woolston resident Rebecca
Robin said the stench had been
a persistent problem for the
eastern suburbs since the fire
damaged part of the sewage
plant. People living in the east
have long complained about the
physical and mental toll it has
taken on them.
Robin said while the city
council now has a plan, it
should have come a lot sooner.
"It does seem like solutions
only just happened when
there's heaps and heaps of pressure.
That's what it looks like
to us; that ideas came out when
finally we had enough and
when it went out of the bounds
of our areas to the greater city,"
she said.
The wastewater treatment plant’s damaged trickling filters were demolished after the November 2021 fire.
But Mauger firmly pushed
back on that.
"To say that it's only been
sorted out because it smelt over
the city, I do not agree with that
at all," he said.
Mauger said the city council
had already been trying to alleviate
the smell.
"We're doing everything we
can to keep those residents
as happy as we can. We spent
an absolute fortune moving
the organics processing plant,
we're spending a small fortune,
luckily some of it is insurance
money, on the new activated
sludge," he said.
The city council's new aerators
plan followed thousands of
odour complaints over the summer
– including from Wigram
10km away – and an abatement
notice from Environment
Canterbury.
That led to Mauger proposing
to pump about a third of the
city's sewage into the ocean.
PHOTO: CCC
But that plan was not recommended
by staff, and it
was hoped the aerators would
substantially reduce offensive
smells 95% of the time.
The aerators were a temporary
fix, with a new $140
million sludge system due to be
operational in 2028.
Mauger said the council was
spending a lot of money on the
aerators, despite the fact they
would have to be written off in
a couple of years.
"We've said we'll do it and
we'll do it.
"God knows what we're going
to do with them after two-anda-half
years because we won't
need them.
"But we've got to do everything
we can to keep people as
happy as they can be because
I have smelt the smell down
there," he said.
Robin said Mauger’s complaints
about the cost were
crass. "That should be one of
the last things that should be
said, in my opinion, especially
because people have been suffering
for so long," she said.
Waitai Coastal-Burwood-
Linwood Community Board
member Jackie Simons said she
was aware council staff had
been working on the problem
since the fire.
But she said it was not front
of mind until recently.
"We went in every month and
told them that the wastewater
treatment plant was stinky, but
the majority of city councillors
didn't overly worry about
it because it wasn't in their
patch," she said.
"That would be standard for
most politicians. They care
about their own people, so we
did hear a lot more from councillors
when people in their
constituency started complaining
to them."
Simons said she was pleased
councillors had now stepped up
to address the problem.
The future of sleep has arrived
in Christchurch
Advertisement
If you’ve ever woken up stiff, restless,
or still tired after a full night’s sleep, it
might not be you, it might be your bed.
Thankfully, there’s a sleep revolution
coming to New Zealand and it’s making
the switch from passive comfort
to intelligent support and a truly
personalised sleep experience.
The next-generation smart Tek Ai bed
from the New Zealand Bed Company has
now officially launched, and it’s set to
completely transform your rest, using
smart technology to give you the best
sleep of your life by not just supporting
your body but learning to understand it.
Unlike your standard mattress, the
smart Tek Ai mattress responds in real
time to your body to optimise comfort,
posture, and your long-term wellbeing.
Using integrated sensors, the
AI-powered mattress is able to monitor
movement, pressure points, and sleep
patterns throughout the night, and
instead of forcing your body to adjust to
the mattress, the mattress adjusts to you.
After a long day, you can climb into
bed and use the Decompression Mode,
which will improve circulation and
combat fatigue, as your body stretches
out and the mattress uses wave style low
frequency decompression to relax your
muscles, or choose Cradle Mode and
the bed will slowly lift your back and
legs one at a time, as it gently swings you
to sleep.
The smart Tek Ai bed also features
an active health monitor, that tracks
your sleep quality, how long you slept
for, sleep stages, and overall health,
it can even make recommendations on
how much sleep you need and suggest
exercises that’ll work for you.
The smart Tek Ai mattress offers a
tailored, personalised experience and
allows you to create a profile, so the
bed ‘remembers’ you and your sleep
preferences making every night’s sleep,
a great night’s sleep.
The ground-breaking mattress was
officially unveiled at the New Zealand
Bed Company Moorhouse on Saturday
18 April and who better to introduce
the ground-breaking new mattress than
former All Black Kieran Read? A man
who knows more than most the power
of rest and recovery and is proud to
support the smart Tek Ai mattress.
The average person spends a third of
their life in bed, so it pays to invest in
the best, and that’s exactly what you’ll
get with the smart Tek Ai mattress, so
go check it out for yourself at the New
Zealand Bed Company, 250 Moorhouse
Avenue, Sydenham, 8011 or visit
www.nzbeds.co.nz to find out more.
The SmartTek AI Bed represents a
shift from passive comfort to intelligent
support, bringing personalised sleep
within reach.

Iwi ‘expects’ bigger decision-making role
BY KEES CHALMERS
Rāpaki iwi Te Hapū o Ngāti
Wheke is calling for a new
strategic partnership with
the city council to ensure it is
involved in key decisions about
land and waterways it acts as
guardian for.
Ngāti Wheke chair Joseph
Tyro and deputy chair
Manwanui Parata presented
to city councillors as part of
Annual Plan 2026/27 hearings.
“Our rights as Te Hapū o Ngāti
Wheke are not assumed, they
are guaranteed, non-negotiable
and must be upheld,” Tyro said
at the hearing.
“It is our expectation to
be engaged at every level, to
be included in key decisionmaking
and bettered to exercise
our role as kaitiaki, mana
whenua and mana moana in
our place.
“We expect a new age of
co-operation moving into the
future, promised by the Crown
and the Ngāi Tahu Claim
Settlement Act 1998 apology.”
Ngāti Wheke is seeking the
development of a shared data
system with the city council
to help monitor issues and
support solutions.
Tyro and Parata also called
for quarterly “mana to mana”
meetings with Mayor Phil
Mauger, a new memorandum
of understanding on
engagement, and an annual
$100,000 strategic partnership
contribution.
Te Hapu o Ngāti Wheke deputy chair Manawanui Parata and chair Joseph Tyro at the Annual Plan submission hearing.
They want representation
on appointment panels for city
council governance and board
roles, as well as involvement
in infrastructure decisions
affecting harbour settlements.
The iwi also called for sufficient
funding in this year’s Annual
Plan to address immediate
concerns.
Mauger did say what he
thought of Ngāti Wheke’s
submission and whether he will
attend mana to mana meetings
with Tyro when asked by The
Star, only saying: “We’re in
the hearing process and will
consider all submissions as
part of our upcoming decision
making.”
A full review of the city
council’s procurement policy,
with Ngāti Wheke involvement,
was also requested.
The submission follows
concerns raised earlier this
year over repeated sewage
discharges into Whakaraupō
Lyttelton Harbour and what
iwi described as a failure to
properly notify mana whenua.
“This is not just about a
submission – this is about the
health of Whakaraupō and the
health of our people,” Parata
said.
“We are dealing with failing
infrastructure, declining water
quality and increasing pressure
on the entire ecosystem.
Whakaraupō can no longer
sustain us in the way it once
did.
“The expectation is simple –
zero discharge of wastewater
and contaminated stormwater
into Whakaraupō.
“We are ready to partner. We
bring capability, commitment
and a long-term view. We are
ready to work with you to make
this partnership real,” he said.
Banks Peninsula Ward
councillor Tyrone Fields
said after the meeting the
submission was compelling.
“It was a powerful
submission. I understand
the aspirations of the rūnanga
and will support them where I
can. The wastewater outflows
into the harbour recently were
absolutely unacceptable, so
we’ve got some work to do
there,” he said.
The couple who got their retirement back
Patricia’s internal alarm goes off
at 5am every morning. It has done
this for 50 years.
Her eyes open. The bedroom is
still dark. The house is quiet except
for the first birds starting their
chorus. She’s awake. But she’s not
really awake.
“I lie there feeling like I’ve been
hit by a truck,” the 73-year-old
explains. “My body clock would
wake me up right on time, but the
rest of me hasn’t caught up.”
At 73, Patricia still tends to
her garden, takes daily walks
through town, and catches local
shows when they come through.
Her husband, 75, does the same.
They’re the kind of couple who’ve
been married so long they walk in
sync without thinking about it.
Retirement was supposed to be
their reward for decades of work.
“We earned this,” Patricia
says. “We did everything right.
Retirement was supposed to be
when we finally got to enjoy it all.”
But somewhere around 60, sleep
started changing. Not dramatically
at first, just lighter, less restorative.
Then her husband began
experiencing the same thing. Now
instead of waking at 5am ready
for the day, they were both waking
feeling drained and not excited for
the day.
The morning walks became
harder first. Then the garden
became a chore. By lunchtime,
they’d both be exhausted.
“The worst part was watching
each other decline,” Patricia
admits. “He was grumpy. I was
snappy. We just weren’t ourselves.”
The crystallising moment came
on a Thursday evening. They’d
bought tickets to a local show.
At 6:30pm, Patricia found her
husband asleep in his chair.
“I looked at him and thought,
I’m just as exhausted. What’s the
point?”
They didn’t go. Thirty dollars
wasted.
Her husband suggested they
accept it. “Maybe this is just being
in our 70s.”
But Patricia wasn’t ready to
accept that.
Scrolling online one morning,
she found Koru Sleep, a natural
supplement made in New Zealand.
The blend of passionflower,
magnesium and valerian was
designed to support the body’s own
sleep chemistry.
“I thought it was probably
another one that promises the
world and delivers nothing,”
Patricia admits.
But she ordered a bottle. Both
decided to try it.
When her body clock went off at
5am the next morning, something
was different. She felt rested.
“Usually I feel like I’ve
been dragged through a hedge
backwards. But that morning I
actually felt okay.”
Her husband stirred beside her.
“How do you feel?” she asked.
“Actually... not bad.”
Within a week, both were
waking at 5am feeling fresh again.
The morning walks came back.
Instead of dragging themselves
around, they were walking briskly,
actually enjoying it again.
Week three, they went to a
local show. Not only did they stay
awake, they enjoyed it.
“We’re actually living our
retirement now,” Patricia reflects.
“Not just surviving it. We are
ourselves again. When you’re
rested, everything becomes
possible.”
To achieve this goal you n ed to
develop some awarene s around the
basic requirements of exercising for
health and fitne s. First and foremost
this has to do with 3 key principles:
1. How often do you train?
To improve your level of health and
fitne s you wi l n ed to aim for 4
se sions per w ek. 2 or 3 se sions per
w ek wi l only maintain what you have
and 1 se sion per w ek is definitely not
sufficient.
2. How long are your se sions?
The duration of your se sions wi l
genera ly build towards betw en 30
and 50 minutes with one longer se sion
of 60-80 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at?
The g od thing abou the programme
is that a l you runs wi l be done
at submaximal pace, also ca led
conversation pace. That means a pace
where you can sti l talk. If you can’t
talk you are going t o fast and you
are likely to come to a grinding halt
s oner or later.
This programme and a companying
Comfort during your training
se sion wi l greatly a d to
your enjoyment. Sma l i sues
like shoes which do not quite
fit, wrongly sized, insufficient
or t o much clothing can
a l have big consequences
like blisters, cold exposure,
heatstroke or chaffing i sues. In
a previous article I have already
mentioned the importance of
we l-fi ting shoes bu the same
ANZAC DAY
SATURDAY APRIL 25, 2026
A symbol of remembrance
and sacrifice
By Fiona Robinson
What is one of the most recognisable symbols of
remembrance leading up to Anzac Day? It is the red
poppy. Worn each April in New Zealand and Australia,
and at sites around the world commemorating
ANZAC Day, it honours the soldiers who served and
those who lost their lives in war.
After the fighting acro s Europe during WWI, bright
red poppies were among the first flowers to grow in
the mud and soil of the ba tlefields. These flowers
became a powerful symbol of remembrance after
the famous poem by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel
John McCrae, “In Flanders Fields,” which described
poppies growing among the graves of fa len soldiers.
The red poppy, or Flanders poppy, also came to
represent the sacrifice of soldiers in campaigns such
as the Ga lipoli Campaign. The red poppy became
a symbol of the bravery and sacrifice of those who
served during the Ga lipoli campaign of 1915 and is
central to the ANZAC story.
While the first official Poppy Day in New Zealand was
planned for Armistice Day in 1921, due to a delay in
the shipment of silk poppies from France, it was held
on 24 April 1922, the day before Anzac Day.
For many years, red plastic and paper poppies
were made in Christchurch by members of the
Christchurch Royal New Zealand Returned and
Services’ A sociation (RNZRSA) and were worn
throughout New Zealand. However, as of this year,
the RNZRSA wi l se l a new sustainable poppy made
from biodegradable paper, manufactured by the
Royal British Legion in Kent, England, at this year’s
Poppy Day Appeal.
Today, poppies are sold each year in the lead-up
to Anzac Day during the annual Poppy Appeal
organised by the RNZRSA. Volunteers stand in
towns and shopping areas, se ling the sma l red
poppies that people wear as a visible sign of respect.
The money raised helps support veterans and their
families, including today’s soldiers, a sisting with
welfare, housing, health services, and community
programmes. In communities acro s the country,
including those throughout Selwyn, buying
and wearing a poppy has become a simple but
meaningful way for people to show their gratitude.
The red poppy is a sma l symbol, but it is a powerful
reminder of courage, sacrifice, and remembrance,
and remains part of New Zealand’s history.
Please donate
to our Poppy
co lectors across
Selwyn and help
support our
15 MARCH 2026 COMMUNITY FUN RUN | 12KM OR 6KM W W W . C I T Y 2 S U R F. C O. N Z
The training programme wi l stay the same this w ek as last w ek but may I su ges that you go and explore the geographical
options you have for your training. This means not only exploring your own neighbourh od but also venturing to places like
the Burw od Plantation, the beach or the Port Hi ls. Of course i takes a bit more time as you n ed transport so the w ekend
might be the bes time to do this. The best surface to run on i soft, like gra s, sand or gravel; it is easier on the leg so try and do
the majority of your se sions on these types of surfaces if po sible. If you have time, venture into the Port Hi ls. A g od place to
start is the track which runs betw en the sign of the Takahe and the sign of the Kiwi. This is a gradual incline which you can do
out and back for as far as you can comfortably go. Once you have mastered this track you can venture beyond anywhere in the
port hi ls. Jo ging on the Port Hi ls walking tracks takes a bit of concentration as the te rain underf ot can be uneven. Walking
or jo ging and ru ning uphi l wi l automatica ly increase the intensity a fraction because you use larger muscle groups. It is a
type of endurance training which wi l a celerate your strength and fitne s with incredible views of our beautiful city as an extra
bonus. Going up, take sma l steps and take your time so you stay mainly in zone 1 and 2. Remember that zone 1 is perceived as
an easy e fort which you can maintain for very long periods of time. In zone 2 you wi l get slightly pu fed but you can sti l have a
conversation. Initia ly take it easy on the downhi l. It can be hard on the legs, so go careful. A this time of the year the beach is
also an a tractive option for a workout. The soft sand wi l a d an extra dimension and help the strength development. On hot
days go for the forest or parks as the shade provided by the tr es wi l protect you from the blazing sun. Hagley Park is of course
the jewel in the crown as far as parks go with lots of variety and enough options never to have to do the same route.
Confrontation
leads to stay
left reminders
BY KEES CHALMERS
An altercation with a
pedestrian has prompted
Scarborough Parkrun
organiser Callum Templeton
to push for markings along
the esplanade.
It comes after a man verbally
abused a teenage
Parkrun volunteer and
Templeton, claiming
the runners take up too
much of the pathway.
Templeton founded
Parkrun two years ago.
It typically attracts
about 200 participants
who meet at Scarborough
Park every
Saturday at 8am for a
5km walk or run.
Templeton spoke at the
Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere-
Heathcote Community Board
meeting last week about putting
four markings on the
esplanade to remind pedestrians
to stay on the left side.
“For us, it’s about the safety
of the community, the safety
of our participants and making
sure we can all use the
space,” he said.
Templeton said the
Callum
Templeton
community board’s reception
to the idea was positive and it
has been sent to city council
staff to investigate.
Templeton said the man
who abused them was asking
the volunteer why they were
there, why they were running
and why they could not do it
on another day.
"He was going to call
the police, he was going
to call the fire department,
he was going to
call the council, he was
going to get us shut
down, he was going to
wear a body cam, he
was going to have us on
sticks,” said Templeton.
The volunteer sent the
man, who was in his 70s, to
Templeton.
He gave Templeton an earful,
filled with superlatives
as he pushed him with his
finger.
Templeton told him they
are only there for an hour
once a week, but the man was
adamant he should be able
to walk where and when he
wants.
He also told the man they
would be happy to have him
About 200 people turn out every Saturday morning for the Scarborough
Parkrun.
as a participant or a volunteer,
the man was not
receptive to the idea.
"Some people get up in the
morning and they have those
kind of days. You just have to
work your way through it,”
he said.
Templeton posted a
reminder to runners on the
Parkrun Facebook to stay
left. He has also since been
placing cones on the pathway
to indicate where to run.
Templeton saw the man
in the village following the
incident. He told him what
the Parkrun has done to make
it more accommodating and
his plans for the esplanade
markings.
"He seemed relatively
happy the last time I spoke to
him,” he said.
LETTERS
Don‘t sell Enable to fund heritage projects
Readers respond to last week’s
articles making a case for and
against selling city-councilowned
broadband company
Enable to fund the restoration
and rebuild of Christ Church
Cathedral and other historic
buildings
Selling Enable to pour
more money into heritage
projects would be a serious
mistake. Enable is a productive
infrastructure asset that
generates income for
Christchurch.
Why sell a long-term revenue
stream just when it is finally
paying off, only to throw the
proceeds at projects with
spiralling costs, no clear
endpoint and a long history of
delay?
Christ Church Cathedral is the
clearest example. After 15 years
of funding gaps, false starts
and uncertainty, ratepayers are
entitled to ask whether this is
a realistic restoration plan or
simply an open-ended money
pit. It is not a core everyday
council service, yet it keeps
demanding more public money
and attention.
No one denies heritage has
value. But sentiment is not a
blank cheque. If some historic
buildings cannot be restored at
a reasonable cost, then stabilise
them, make them safe, preserve
what is practical and stop there.
Christchurch should reduce
debt, keep income-producing
assets, and spend public money
on infrastructure and services
residents actually use every day.
- James Andrews, Sumner
As an old conservative my
default position is governments,
local and central, should not get
involved in business. However
natural monopolies should be
publicly owned.
Chris Carswell’s succinct
and well-argued letter, (The
Star, April 16) opposing the
shallow and ill thought through
proposal, to sell Enable, a cash
cow, should be the end of the
matter.
The council’s idea of
wasting more money on an
“investigation,” by Macquarrie
Bank is another waste. Cancel it.
Mr Rolleston’s comments
(The Star, April 16) about not
only “relying on rates to fund
rebuilding assets,” surely
reinforces the idea of Enable
contributing to that revenue. As
for some of the rebuilds, what a
disaster that pile of stones in the
Square is.
Talk about waste, over $200
million so far and counting. The
other heritage buildings would
really have liked this.
Carswell’s idea of “living
ruins,” is also sound. In any sale
of Enable, who would benefit,
only the new owners and who
would they be? The proposers?
Certainly, not the people of
Christchurch.
- Paul Grainger, St Albans
Your correspondent C.
Carswell is right on the mark
with his analysis of the merits
of the proposal being floated
for the council to sell Enable to
help pay for the rebuild of the
cathedral and other historic
buildings.
The proponents of that course
seem to ignore the reality that
Enable is expected to generate
free cash flow of about $45m in
the next year, and up to $60m
within three years.
Deprived of that income,
the council will have to either
reduce expenditure by those
amounts, increase rates, or borrow
to balance the books.
Enable is a rare council investment
success, and should be the
last asset to be sold. It produces
a yield comparable to the best
of the tech businesses, and has
a strong future in a sector that
has the potential to continue
to provide a great return on
investment.
A concept design of the stopping platforms along the Moncks Bay causeway.
Businessman Humphry Rolleston told the city council to sell Enable for about $1.2 billion to bankroll projects like the
cathedral, Canterbury Museum, Canterbury Provincial Chambers and the Arts Centre.
As for the cathedral, Bishop
Matthews was right in her
assessment at the time that it
should have been demolished
after the quakes, but I accept the
city is faced with the reality that
we currently have to do something
with the eyesore that now
dominates the Square.
The suggestion that the ruins
be made safe and stabilised as
gardens, markets and entertainment
space is worthy of further
investigation.
I suspect it would be a much
cheaper, and more attractive
option than seemingly endless
fundraising and increasing
expense in undertaking a full
restoration.
- K J Jones, Merivale
We think selling Enable to
fund the cathedral repairs
would be a daft, stupid, crazy
idea.
- Pauline and William Cooper
I believe the Anglican Church
has more than enough assets of
their own to sell to pay for their
cathedral.
No one paid for my earthquake
repairs other than my
insurance.
- Philippa Lemon
There’s been much debate
lately concerning the built iconography
of the city, namely the
contentious issue of the Anglican
cathedral and the excitement of
the new stadium opening this
weekend.
These structures represent
how Christchurch sees
itself. The cathedral marks our
pre-earthquake past and has
become mired in disputatious
wrangling since its ruin.
A religious structure that
evolved into a secular touchstone,
it now sits sad and
neglected, neither one thing nor
the other.
A victim of nostalgia that
can never be reconstituted, the
cathedral has become emblematic
of something that can never
be fully grasped in the present
– memory.
Even restored it will never be
as it was, at best a facsimile of
an idealised past that can never
be regained, at worst a financial
civic folly future citizens will
shake their heads at.
Like it, loath it, or be indifferent
to it, the stadium represents
something more tangible
– progress.
- Elliott Campbell
Coastal Pathway
I object to the proposal to build
stopping platforms and wind
shelters on the Coastal Pathway.
They would be ugly obtrusions
on the elegant design of the
pathway.
The view is exhilarating in
all weather and it is easy to use
binoculars to view bird life from
the edge of the pathway.
There are far more important
things to spend our rates on.
- Helen Peate
A big no to the frivolous desire
of the Coastal Pathway Group to
have viewing platforms added to
the path at ratepayers’ expense.
I’ve never had a problem
stopping along the path to enjoy
the view and ratepayers across
the city have basic cost of living
concerns and cannot afford to
fund this extravagance.
- Dianne Downward
The Coastal Pathway has been
a great asset for the region. It’s
good to see so many people out
running, cycling and walking
on the pathway each week. It
has been a real boost for local
businesses.
Enough has already been
spent on the path though. The
platforms could be better spent
elsewhere, especially with
the current global economic
uncertainty.
While the platforms in the
concept designs look great and
would be nice to have, we need
sound economic management
from the council – spending this
money on viewing platforms
doesn’t add up to me.
There are already plenty of
places and cafes along the path
that people can access if they
want to get off the path to stop
and take a look at the amazing
scenery.
- Banks Peninsula MP Vanessa
Weenink
What a stupid idea and what a
waste of ratepayers’ rates.
The proposed platforms will
most probably be taken over by
fishermen leaving behind smelly
bait and potentially the odd hook
not to mention rubbish.
There is already plenty of room
on the pathway for people to stop
and view – what extra benefit
will people get to see by being a
few metres out into the estuary.
Perhaps some additional
seating along the pathway would
be a good compromise.
- David Burt
Crusaders horses
Maybe the ‘tough call’ cited by
the Crusaders chief executive
Colin Mansbridge can be
avoided?
Why not, instead, parade
the horses and riders through
the city before the game and
then tether them outside the
stadium? That way there’s no
need to scrap a 30-year-old
feature of Crusaders matches.
- Chris Watkins, St Albans
A sad day with the horses
not featuring as part of the
Crusaders pre-game build up at
the new stadium.
The reasoning I completely
understand, but still a blow.
Crusaders fans, young and old
and in between loved them.
The restored and rededicated bridge was reopened on April 25, 2016, and continues to be a focal point for Anzac Day
commemorations.
THIS WEEK IN HISTORY
April 20-27
Foundation stone laid for the Bridge of Remembrance
On Anzac Day, April 25, 1923, the foundation stone for the Bridge of Remembrance
was laid at a public ceremony.
The bridge traces its origins to the years immediately after World War I, when
Christchurch grappled with how best to honour its fallen. Among a range of proposals
— from a museum to a hospital ward — one idea stood out. On July 24, 1919, Lilian
May Wyn Irwin wrote to The Press suggesting a memorial arch be built on the existing
Cashel St bridge. The idea quickly gained support, particularly because of the site’s
symbolism: Canterbury soldiers had crossed the bridge as they marched from King
Edward Barracks to the railway station on their way to war.
Construction began in January
1923, and just months later the project
was firmly tied to the nation’s
day of remembrance. On Anzac Day,
April 25, 1923, the foundation stone
was laid by Governor-General John
Jellicoe at a formal public ceremony.
From that moment, the bridge was
closely linked with Anzac Day and its
role in commemorating sacrifice.
The memorial was officially
unveiled on November 11, 1924 —
Armistice Day — again by Jellicoe.
It honoured about 4500 Christchurch
servicemen who died in World
War I and was later extended to
recognise those who served and
died in World War II and subsequent
conflicts in Korea, Malaya, Borneo and
Vietnam. Despite its Armistice Day
unveiling, April 25 remained central to
Governor-General Lord Jellicoe during the
foundation stone ceremony on Anzac Day, 1923.
the bridge’s identity, marking the day its foundations were laid and anchoring its place
in annual commemorations.
That connection was reinforced decades later. On April 25, 1977, the bridge was
pedestrianised, transforming it from a working roadway into a dedicated place of
reflection. The change prioritised its commemorative purpose and strengthened its
role as a civic space for Anzac Day ceremonies.
The bridge continued to serve as a focal point for remembrance into the 21st century,
until it was badly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake. A lengthy restoration
followed, including engineering work that saw the bridge’s piles extended from 4m
deep to 27m, anchoring them to better withstand future earthquakes.
Fittingly, its modern chapter also started on April 25. After years of delays, the
restored bridge was reopened and rededicated on Anzac Day 2016, reasserting its
place at the heart of Christchurch’s commemorations. More than a century after its
foundation stone was laid, the Bridge of Remembrance remains a place to gather each
year to honour sacrifice, service and memory.
Rowing trio to
New signings spark strong
start, shield success for Bays
Three Christchurch rowers
will represent New Zealand
at the World U19 Rowing
Championships in Bulgaria in
August.
Cashmere High School’s
Eleri Clare, St Bede’s College’s
Alex Walters, and Rangi Ruru’s
Charlotte Gorman were selected
after being invited to trial for
the team following last month’s
Maadi Cup.
The trio each enjoyed strong
performances at the national
secondary schools regatta,
with Gorman winning two gold
medals and a silver, while Clare
and Walters both collected two
golds and a bronze apiece.
Walters will be competing in
the men’s four alongside George
Langley, Charlie Field and Sam
Bird, all from Auckland.
Gorman will compete in
the women’s coxless four
with Aucklanders Jessica
Walkenshaw and Charlotte
Mawston, as well as Hamilton’s
Georgia Kendrick.
Clare will line up in the
women’s double sculls with
Auckland’s Zara Blackie.
This will be Clare’s second
appearance at the world
championships, having
competed at the event in
Lithuania last year.
Ferrymead Bays coach Alan
Walker believes a couple of smart
additions have lifted his side this
season – and helped deliver their
first Hurley Challenge Shield win
since 2018.
Bays’ 2-1 win away over Coastal
Spirit pushed them into the top
two of the Southern League after
five rounds and saw them take
the shield off the holders.
Walker credited new signings
Nicolas Falco, from UWA
Nedlands in Perth, and former
Christchurch United player Mac
Prathumphithak – returning
from a stint in Sydney – with
raising the overall quality of the
squad. Bays finished fifth or sixth
in each of the past four seasons.
“The core group hasn’t
changed, but what has changed is
we’ve just added to it with one or
two players of quality.”
Prathumphithak made an
immediate impact, scoring the
equaliser on debut before Daniel
Thoms netted a late winner.
Only frontrunners Cashmere
Technical have won more games
than Bays this season, but Walker
is keeping expectations in check
and not looking too far ahead to
National League qualification.
“I always say to the players
that five games in the league is
the start of the season, so don’t
Ferrymead Bays wing Mac Prathumphithak marked his debut with a goal in the
2-1 win over Coastal Spirit on Sunday. PHOTO: BELINDA MARSON PHOTOGRAPHY
think that just because you beat
Christchurch United once, you’re
a decent team.
“We’ve gone through five
games and found ourselves in
second. Now for the next five
games we’re going to be playing a
lot of the teams generally around
us – the likes of Nomads and
Nelson and Dunedin City Royals.
“You go into a different phase
and say, ‘right, don't mess up
against these guys’.”
Bays face another tough
assignment on Monday,
travelling to Dunedin – a trip
they have not won since a 3-2
victory in 2022.
Their hosts have struggled
since opening the season with a
win and now sit eighth.
“Any time you’re travelling and
getting up at half past five in the
morning is never easy,” Walker
said.
“I’m surprised (at their results),
I thought they would have been a
little bit better after the first one
or two games.”
Elsewhere, Cashmere Technical
continued their dominant start
with a 6-0 win over Northern
AFC, highlighted by a hat-trick
from captain Tom Schwarz –
including a remarkable lob from
behind halfway for his first goal.
matches, scoring 29 goals and
Suburbs on Monday.
Christchurch United will aim to
build on back-to-back wins when
they host Northern, after a 4-2
victory over Wānaka.
Coastal Spirit face Wānaka
as they look to bounce back
from their loss to Bays and the
surrender of the Hurley Shield.
Nomads head to Selwyn United
on the back of consecutive wins,
including a 2-0 away victory
over Dunedin, while Selwyn are
Tigers make winning return to top grade
Welcome back, Papanui Tigers.
In their first CRL Premiership
match since 2022, the Tigers
edged Eastern Eagles 26-24 at
home to open their season with
a win.
Trailing 20-12 at halftime,
Papanui hit back through tries
to Chris Bamford and Antonio
Lemalu, along with a penalty
goal from Bradley White, to
take the lead with eight minutes
remaining – an advantage they
did not relinquish.
Head coach Ray Hubbard
was pleased with
the result but
stressed the need
for consistency
ahead of Saturday’s
away clash
with defending
champions Linwood
Keas, who
come off a bye. Ray Hubbard
“If we’re all
aligned and on the same page,
we’ll accomplish good things
and be consistent. That’s
probably the biggest battle
in this competition – staying
consistent,” Hubbard said.
“It’s a challenge to come up
against Linwood and back it
up, but I’m sure the boys will
have a greater understanding
of how much they need to work
together to achieve successful
outcomes.”
Forty-five years after Steve
Sumner and the All Whites
travelled to Spain for the 1982
Fifa World Cup, his grandson
Beckett is set to follow in his
footsteps – in his own way.
Beckett Sumner, 11, has been
selected for the Barcelona
Academy Clinic next March
after impressing at a camp in
Christchurch.
The Christchurch United player
is one of two locals chosen for the
programme, alongside Nomads
junior Casey Pinion, 13, who will
attend a clinic in December.
Beckett’s father, Carlos Sumner
– Steve’s son – said his son
was already making a strong
impression at United, and the
family was excited to see how he
performs in Spain.
“All the academy coaches at
Christchurch United haven’t
ever seen anything like it, they’re
saying. He’s playing up a grade
or two sometimes, then when
he goes and plays his own age
group, it’s like he’s playing with
his little brothers.
“We’ll see what he can do there
and if he can be effective. I’m
not sure if anything will happen
from it, but it’ll give people an
eye of him.
Tour cap takes the long way home
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Fifty-three years after giving it
away, Vic Pollard’s final tour cap
has been returned to him.
Pollard, now 80, swapped the
cap with former England wicketkeeper
Alan Knott following
New Zealand’s 1973 tour of England
– the last time he played test
cricket.
It has now found its way back
to him, meaning he holds two
caps from his playing days – the
one he exchanged with Knott, and
another from an earlier tour.
The 1973 tour proved the highlight
of Pollard’s career as a Black
Cap. He scored two centuries in
five innings in a 2-0 series loss,
with New Zealand falling just 38
runs short of a first-ever win on
English soil in the opening test
before drawing the second and
losing the third by an innings.
“I don’t know why I gave it to
him, he might have asked me,”
said Pollard.
He does not know what became
of Knott’s cap, which is not among
his own memorabilia.
Pollard’s cap remained with
Knott for 30 years before being
gifted to close friend Ian Thacker.
Thacker, a first-class wicketkeeping
coach now based in
Perth, held onto it as a treasured
keepsake before deciding it
should be returned.
“The cap has lived its life carefully
stored in a bedroom drawer
and was brought out for interested
guests or taken to special
cricket events,” he said.
“I have never worn this cap
in a match situation, it has been
a precious memento of my
friendship with Knotty which I
have treasured over the years.
Later I felt the cap should be
Reunion clash revives London NZ club’s legacy
BY GEORGIA LEWIS
A reunion decades in the
making will bring former
teammates back together when
New Brighton Golden Lions
take on London NZ Old Boys in
a special over 35s match.
London NZ Old Boys is made
up of New Zealanders who
represented the now-defunct
London NZ club during their
OE.
While the club itself is no
longer active, ex-player Lance
returned to the Pollard family, its
rightful home.”
In February, Thacker travelled
to New Zealand on holiday but
did not visit Christchurch.
Instead, he left the cap with
family friend Ian Budd, who lives
in Waikato, to arrange its return.
Budd contacted Pollard and
handed it over last month.
“I went to see Vic and met him,
we had a cup of tea and a talk,”
Budd said.
played 32 matches, scoring more than 1200 runs and taking 40 wickets. PHOTO: GETTY
Vic Pollard’s cap from the 1973 tour of England was returned to him last month, 53 years after it was given to England
wicketkeeper Alan Knott following the third test. Pollard was presented with the cap by Ian Budd.
Cheesman has kept its spirit
alive by organising reunion
matches over the years in
Gisborne, Christchurch,
Melbourne, Tauranga and
Kaitaia.
The idea for the latest match
was sparked by Super Rugby
Pacific’s Super Round being
held in Christchurch, with
about 40 London NZ players set
to pull on the boots again.
The game will also mark what
would have been the club’s
100th year.
“I presented the hat to him as
best I could and shook hands
with him.”
Pollard was surprised to be
contacted about the cap’s return.
“I didn’t want it back, of
course. I’m not one that really
stores and puts a lot of emphasis
on memorabilia.
“That’s not to take away from
the kindness of these people – it
was lovely to send it back.”
An aggressive batter and
handy off-spin bowler, Pollard
played 32 tests for New Zealand
between 1965 and 1973, along
with three ODIs in 1973-74. He
retired at 27 for religious reasons
– as a devout Christian, he
did not want to play on Sundays.
“I was surprised they took me
on my third tour, because there
was one or two Sunday games in
‘73, but they allowed me to have
those off,” he said.
He stepped away at the peak of
his powers, scoring two centuries
in five innings on that 1973
tour – 116 in the fourth innings
at Nottingham and an unbeaten
105 at Lord’s to help secure a
draw.
The New Zealand side at the
time featured players such as Sir
Richard Hadlee, Bevan Congdon
and Glenn Turner.
Pollard finished his eight-year
test career with more than 1200
runs and 40 wickets, averaging
London NZ was founded in
1926 and brought together Kiwi
players who were living in, or
even just travelling through,
London.
The club was based at Aorangi
Park in Wimbledon and are the
only rugby team except national
representative sides allowed
to wear the silver fern as their
crest after being granted the
special privilege by NZ Rugby.
Current New Brighton player
and former London NZ representative
Brent Ash said the
“I didn’t want it back,
of course. I’m not one
that really stores and
puts a lot of emphasis
on memorabilia. That’s
not to take away from
the kindness of these
people – it was lovely to
send it back.”
Vic Pollard
more than 100 with the bat in his
final series.
“I could have played until 35,
40. I looked after my body, and I
was extremely fit,” Pollard said.
“I just didn’t wish to play on
Sunday. It hurt that I had to finish
cricket at that age.”
At the same time, he also
ended his football career.
A dual international, Pollard
played seven matches for
New Zealand and represented
Christchurch United in the inaugural
National League from 1970
to 1972.
“I have fond memories of football,
I loved it,” he said.
“The first three years of the
National League was something
tremendous for New Zealand
reunion was about more than
just rugby.
“This game will bring all the
people you don’t ever get to see
together, like people from the
North Island and some coming
from Aussie. It’s also going to
get all the different years of old
boys together.”
The over 35s game will be held
at Rawhiti Domain on Sunday
with kick-off set for 2pm.
- Georgia Lewis is a year 11
student at Avonside Girls High
School
soccer when rugby’s our number
one, but we got on TV – they
actually broadcast it.
“We were amateurs so we
didn’t get paid, but it was
fabulous.”
He also recalls meeting Queen
Elizabeth II during the 1965 tour
of England – although his time at
the crease delayed the moment.
“She would come to Lord’s,
and you’d line up at afternoon
tea. She would come round with
the Duke of Windsor at the time,
and they would shake your
hand, watch the game for probably
an hour, and then go back.
“I actually held the Queen up,
because the ruling in cricket is, if
you’re nine down and it’s afternoon
tea, they’ll postpone the tea
for about half an hour, expecting
that number 11 will get out soon
to save a bit of time.
“She’d come to meet us at
afternoon tea, and I was batting
with a guy, Frank Cameron,
who was our number 11. I batted
about 5 or 6, and I was still
in on about 50. We didn’t get
out, so she had to wait half an
hour, rather than coming out
at 3.40pm, she had to wait until
4.10pm.”
Outside of sport, Pollard began
teaching in his early 20s and
retired from full-time work 14
years ago, continuing as a relief
teacher until he was 78.
These days, he remains active
with Grace Baptist Church,
which he helped found 30 years
ago, and spends much of his time
travelling.
“We haven’t booked yet, but
I avoid the Christchurch winters
now and tend to go over to
the Gold Coast for three months
– we’ve got a unit over there. I
love that, I swim and walk on the
beach.
“Between helping the family
out, seeing the grandchildren,
church involvement, my life is
very blessed.”
Pollard plans to store the
cap alongside other keepsakes,
including his previous tour cap
and his Canterbury cap.
“I won’t be looking at it for
a while. It’ll sit there, I know
where it is, but I don’t put things
on display for people around my
home.”
London NZ players are given a plaque
when they leave the club.

Kia’s Tasman making a
big splash in ute market
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
Kia is backing its new ute,
the Tasman, to make a strong
entrance into uncharted
waters and generate enough
impact to establish itself as
a genuine alternative to the
established players in the
market.
It’s a segment the company
has long wanted to enter, and
it’s doing so with a ute that
combines purposeful exterior
and interior design with leading
technology. It also claims
a best-in-class 1173-litre cargo
capacity.
For now, the Tasman is
offered in a single body style
– a double cab wellside – with
double and single cab chassis
variants set to follow in the
coming months.
The current range starts
with the keenly priced
$52,690 TX, climbing to
$79,690 for the flagship X-Pro
– a significant outlay for a
newcomer without a track
record in this segment. This
test features the mid-spec
TXS, priced at $62,690.
There is a single engine
option for the New Zealand
market: Kia’s proven 154kW
2.2-litre turbo diesel paired
with an eight-speed automatic
transmission. It produces
441Nm of torque, which is
less than many rivals and
leaves it short on low-speed
pulling power for a vehicle of
this size and weight.
With ute buyers increasingly
expecting around
500Nm, the Tasman is off
the pace on paper, reflected
in a 0-100km/h time of 10.4
seconds.
Interestingly, from behind
the wheel the test vehicle
feels quicker than those figures
suggest.
Throttle response and
low-speed acceleration are
adequate, if not standout,
while the smooth-shifting
eight-speed automatic performs
well and offers an
appropriate spread of ratios.
Inside, the cabin offers
generous space, with ample
head and shoulder room
and 940mm of rear-seat legroom,
creating a comfortable
environment for passengers.
Practicality is enhanced
with dual wireless charging
pads and hidden storage
bins beneath the rear seats,
Rating out of 10: Performance
7, Handling 8, Build Quality 7,
Comfort 8, Space 8, Styling
6, Fuel Economy; on road test
average consumption 9.8L
/100km, Value for money 7
Safety: ANCAP crash rating, 5
Star, June 2025 testing
Price $62,690.
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
providing an additional 33
litres of storage.
Dominating the interior is
a state-of-the-art panoramic
display, combining 12.3-inch,
5-inch, and 12.3-inch screens
to give both driver and passenger
access to vehicle
controls and infotainment.
As with other Kia models,
the Tasman includes the
brand’s 10 sustainabilityfocused
features, such as a
crash pad made from bioplastics,
seats trimmed in
recycled PET fabric and biobased
synthetic leather, and
carpeting made from recycled
materials.
Kia has equipped the Tasman
with its latest Advanced
Driver Assistance Systems
(ADAS), including lane keep
assist, blind-spot collision
warning, and remote parking
assist, as part of Highway
Driving Assist 2.
The chassis and suspension
have been engineered
to handle harsh off-road
terrain, while also delivering
a composed on-road
driving experience. Longdistance
travel is improved
by extensive sound-deadening
measures and enhanced
sealing, resulting in a quieter,
more refined cabin with
fewer vibrations.
Given the Tasman’s size
and weight, the suspension
does a commendable job of
controlling body roll. Even
when pushed through twisty
roads or when making sudden
steering adjustments
– such as over uneven or
poorly cambered surfaces
– it remains composed and
predictable.
It stands out as one of the
better-handling utes in its
class, with the ability to track
confidently through both tight
bends and sweeping corners.
Responsive steering helps
maintain a strong connection
between driver, vehicle and
road, adding to its overall
appeal.
