NCCO launches
DateCodeGenie ® Mini, putting
automated labelling in the hand
of every food manufacturer
ince its launch in 2015, NCCO International’s
SDateCodeGenie ® has transformed food safety
in catering operations worldwide. Now, with
DateCodeGenie ® Mini, the same power fits in your
hand.
Food manufacturers know all food is subject to
general labelling requirements, while prepacked
food requires mandatory information. The Food
Standards Agency says: “All and any labelling
provided must be accurate and not misleading.”
NCCO helps food manufacturing specialists ensure
correct labelling, every time.
“The new DateCodeGenie ® Mini lets food
manufacturers label anywhere – back of house,
front of house, or on the move,” says David

all managed via a central portal. It supports
allergen labelling and compliance with current
and upcoming legislation. From September 2026,
Benedict’s Law, statutory guidance on allergy safety
in schools, comes into force.
Cable-free and compact, it prints clear labels
instantly. No handwriting, no ink, and no fuss, as
it is thermal. With a long-lasting battery, it works
throughout service wherever needed.
The DateCodeGenie® Mini is compatible with
NCCO’s high-performance labels that maximise roll
capacity and reduce waste, supplied in rolls of 500

at ECS 2025.
The European
Coatings Show
and Conference
took place in
Nuremberg,
Germany from 25
to 27 March.
At ECS, mixing
and dispersing technology specialist
ystral focused on the enormous
efficiency gains that are possible in
the production of lacquers, paints
and coatings with innovative process
technology. “We would like to enter
discussions with manufacturers
in these industries about how they
can significantly reduce the energy
and resource requirements of their
processes – and how we can support
them with our technologies, our
in-depth industry knowledge and
our expertise, which has grown over
decades,” says Dr Hans-Joachim
Jacob, Senior Expert Process and
Applications at ystral.
MANUFACTURING & ENGINEERING PRODUCTS & SERVICES
The company
presented two
technologies, the
powder wetting and
dispersing machine
YSTRAL Conti-TDS
and the YSTRAL
Jetstream Mixer,
which enable energy
and process time
savings of up to
90% compared to
the agitators and
dissolvers commonly
used in the production
of lacquers and paints.
In the YSTRAL Conti-
TDS, a vacuum and very high shear
forces are concentrated in a very small
volume. The vacuum separates the
particles and then disperses them at
a shear rate that is 1,000 times higher
and with a volume-specific power that
is 30,000 times higher compared to
conventional technologies. “The result is
significantly shorter process times, lower
energy consumption and temperature
rise, the highest quality and significant
savings in costs, raw materials and
space requirements,” says Jacob.

Micro greywater reuse: The fastest way to
hit Part G targets and build water smart
communities
ngland is tightening the taps: Defra’s Review
of Water Efficiency Standards in the Building
ERegulations 2010 closed in December 2025. It
is consulting on Part G and proposes cutting the new
build water efficiency standard to 105 l/p/d (with a
100 l/p/d option for seriously water stressed areas).
Its consultation is actively seeking evidence on
water reuse to go further, faster.
For dense developments where supply constraints
stall planning, this is a watershed moment. At the
same time, the Future Homes Hub roadmap (‘Water
Ready’) sets out a practical, staged path that begins
with fittings first and explicitly calls out greywater
systems as a scalable next step – provided
government gives long term clarity so industry can
invest and deliver at scale. (waterrecycling.uk),
(goodhomes.org.uk) (consult.defra.gov.uk),
(futurehomes.org.uk)
Enter Aqua Gratis by Cascade Water Products: A
micro domestic greywater system that captures
bath/shower water and automatically reuses it for
toilet flushing. It fits neatly behind the WC, stores
up to ~140 litres, serves multiple toilets, and is
engineered for low energy, low maintenance and UK
standards compliance - precisely the sort of solution
policymakers want evidence about. (cascadewater.
life), (cascade-enviro.com)
There is no time to waste. The Housing situation is in
a critical state and the water crisis gets deeper.
Why micro greywater – why now?
◆ Immediate demand reduction at plot level: Toilets
account for a large share of indoor water use;
Aqua Gratis recycles the day’s shower/bath water
to cover most flushing, cutting potable demand
by ~30-45% without behaviour change. That is the
step change dense schemes need to close
the gap from 105 to 100 l/p/d and beyond.
(cordis.europa.eu),
(cascade-enviro.com)
◆ Designed for UK homes and regulations: The
unit is built to relevant British standards for non
potable reuse (including BS EN 16941 2/BS 8525),
with dual supply safeguards that align with the
regulatory direction of travel in Part G and its
supporting specifications. (cascade-enviro.com),
(cascadewater.life), (futurehomes.org.uk)
◆ Compact, quiet, serviceable: The system is
micro scale, low energy, and uses patented self
cleaning filtration with SMART monitoring – vital
attributes where plant space, resident acceptance,
and maintenance models determine viability.
(cascadewater.life),
(cascade-enviro.com)
◆ The system is affordable and depending on the
region, water companies have schemes which
discount water and wastewater connection
charges for new builds: In some instances, this
will cover the cost of the Aqua Gratis system.
◆ Proven and investable: Aqua Gratis has
secured angel investment (~£350k) to scale
manufacture and has been run continuously
in a real home for 3+ years, giving confidence
on reliability for house builders, housing
providers and lenders. (watermagazine.co.uk),
(sustainablebusinessmagazine.net)
The policy context is finally aligned
Defra’s consultation doesn’t just lower the headline
litres per person number; it invites evidence on
reuse to shape how far and how fast standards
can tighten – exactly where micro systems can
shine in flatted blocks and space constrained sites.
Meanwhile, the Future Homes Hub roadmap calls
for a clear, sequenced pathway so industry can
plan: fittings first, then innovations like greywater
to reach later rungs of ambition (2030/2035). That
gives architects and developers permission to specify
reuse confidently today, knowing it aligns with where
regulation is headed. (gov.uk) (consult.defra.gov.uk),
(futurehomes.org.uk)
Why Aqua Gratis is a strong choice for dense
housing
◆ Space smart: A behind toilet micro unit avoids
big plant rooms – valuable in apartments – and
can be paired with riser strategies or adopted
in townhouses where utility space is tight.
(cascadewater.life)
◆ Scalable across tenures: Suitable for social/
affordable, Private Rented Sector, student, and
HMOs, with features (SMART metering, leak
detection) that suit estate management models.
(cascade-enviro.com), (bip-it.com)
◆ Carbon aware: Low energy operation and circular
economy design, with third party recognition (e.g.,
Solar Impulse Efficient Solution label) supporting
ESG reporting for institutional investors. (bip-it.
com)
◆ Compliance ready: Engineered against UK
reuse standards and the dual supply safeguards
emphasised in Part G supporting material and test
code sheets (backflow, segregation, labelling).
(futurehomes.org.uk), (hodkinsonconsultancy.
com)
Call to action
◆ Architects & MEP designers: Put micro greywater
in your base spec for water stressed Local
PlanningAuthorities. Start with Aqua Gratis
in typologies where it’s easiest (townhouses,
student, HMOs), then roll into mid rise apartments
with co-ordinated risers and behind WC units.
Share monitored results with Defra’s Part G team.
(cascadewater.life), (gov.uk)
◆ Housebuilders & Modern Method of Construction
providers: Pre plumb dual WC feeds in bathroom
pods; value engineer a standard cupboard/duct
detail and lock in supply chain pricing now that
Aqua Gratis has investment to scale production.
(watermagazine.co.uk)
◆ Housing associations & Private Rental
Sector: Specify SMART enabled units with
service contracts; use the data to verify l/p/d
outcomes and to support rent/ESG reporting.
(cascadewater.life)
◆ NGOs & professional bodies: Help normalise
micro reuse with resident friendly guidance and
training for installers and building control. Point
to Future Homes Hub’s roadmap to show the
direction of travel. (futurehomes.org.uk)
◆ Local & national government: Use planning
policy and pilot funding to seed evidence
gathering deployments in water stressed areas;
feed findings straight into the Part G review to
accelerate a nationally consistent pathway for
reuse. (waterrecycling.uk)
Be ‘Water Ready’ today
The UK can’t build the homes it needs without fixing
water demand. Micro greywater reuse is the fastest,
most space efficient lever we have in dense housing
– and Aqua Gratis shows it’s practical, standards
ready and scalable now. Pair it with efficient fittings,
prove the numbers, and let’s turn Defra’s consultation
and the Future Homes Hub roadmap into real,
resilient homes that unlock planning and protect
our rivers.

Take the lead on LEAD
emoval and replacement of lead water
supply pipes is not only good for occupiers’
Rhealth but comes under the Landlord and
Tenant Act 1985 Section 11 to maintain the
water supply.
The industry has been aware of the potential
damage lead can do to the environment and
health, particularly in infants and children, for over
50 years. Houses built before 1970 would have
been constructed with lead water supply pipes
and in some areas of the UK up to a third of these
older properties are still receiving their water
through these original lead pipes.1 UK water
companies are actively engaged in replacement
of these old lead supplies, with many offering free
replacement of supply to the property boundary.
In any brown field development removal of a lead
water supplies should be a priority. In addition
to removal of potential contaminants, these new
pipe materials improve flow rates and reducing
pipe noise. Traditionally, any lead replacement
programme requires major excavations
outside a property and causes huge disruption
within. Resulting in mess and disturbance to
householders over several days. This disruption
has often been the cause of users’ reluctance to
have the work undertaken. However, with wider
use of modern boilers, the lower water flow of old
lead pipes can cause problems and are often the
incentive for supply replacement.
“Lead Water Supply replacement has become
a priority for water companies across the UK.
Systems such as INSUduct® can overcome user
reluctance and provide and time and cost-efficient
methods of water supply pipe reluctance.”
Steve Leigh, Managing Director, Groundbreaker
Replace lead water supply pipes in under 2
hours… no major excavations, minimal disruption.
An innovative solution to water supply pipe
replacement which significantly reduces
disturbance, time and cost is the routing of
the new supply pipe up the external face of
the building. Now recognised by some of the
UK’s largest water companies as the preferred
method of lead supply replacement, INSUduct ®
by Groundbreaker is revolutionising lead supply
replacement practice.
Traditionally, pipes needed to be within the
thermal envelope of the building or buried to
minimise the risk of frost damage and freeze
thaw bursts. “We’ve been putting pipes in
holes in the ground to protect them from frost
for decades,” Steve Leigh, Managing Director,
Groundbreaker, explained. “Although it works,
today’s new materials allow for a much better
solution. Keeping pipes on the surface reduces
the risk of leaks developing and allows for easy
repair and maintenance. It’s just a must better
method of working.”
The insulated ducting products are designed
to provide long lasting and effective thermal
protection to water pipes and fittings outside the
thermal envelope of a building. To achieve the
level of protection required by British Standard
8
PSR IS SPONSORED BY EAIS – SEE THEM ON PAGE 4
5422 and all relevant Water Regulations for
frost protection, the ducting must be carefully
fabricated to provide long lasting protection and
should be tested and approved to Water Supply
(Water Fittings) Regulations, Regulation 4 or listed
as an approved product by WRAS Approvals.
Easy installation, saving time and money.
Installation of a new supply using INSUduct ® is straight
forwards, enabling most water supply replacements
to be completed within a couple of hours, without the
traditional mess and disruption to the householders
or occupiers. The improvement in work efficiency and
reduction on the impact to occupants is a win for both
contractor and customer. There is also little impact to
the exterior appearance of the property, as the system
provides a neat, clean finish to the job.
The insulated ducting allows the new water
service to be routed up the external face of the
building and connected to the internal plumbing
above ground level, whether this is the ground
floor or upper storey.
In multi-occupancy properties INSUduct ® allows
multiple supply pipes to be installed, as it is
designed to provide frost protection for up to
three 32mm OD water pipes installed to the
exterior of the building.
The use of insulated ducting also allows
compliance with British Plumbing Employers
Council (BPEC) best practice of joint free supply
installation. In their Groundworker, Service Pipe
and Meter Housing Installation Training, the use
of joint free installation is recommended and is
recognised to minimise the risk of future joint
failure and leaks.
In addition to providing a simple solution to lead
free water provision, INSUduct ® can be used
in association with Groundbreaker’s surface
mounted meter housings, ideal for where the new
generation of smart meters are being installed.

Freudenberg Xpress ®
acquires Trygonal Group
manufacturer Freudenberg
SSealing Technologies has acquired
the Trygonal Group effective April 30,
2024, strengthening its global business
unit Freudenberg Xpress ® , an expert in
small and medium batch sizes, rapid
prototyping, and customer-specific
sealing solutions. The acquisition is
an important milestone in the current
corporate strategy to increase the
service business. The parties have
agreed not to disclose the purchase
price. The takeover is still subject to
approval by the antitrust authorities.
The Trygonal Group recently generated
annual sales of over 30 million euros.
220 employees at eight locations
in Germany, Spain, Austria and in
Switzerland produce high-quality,
customized sealing solutions in the
areas of thermoplastics, elastomers
and rubber-metal compounds using
a wide range of manufacturing
processes.
“The acquisition of the Trygonal Group
expands the current Freudenberg
Xpress® service offering,” explains
Sebastian Grünschloß, Vice President
Global Freudenberg Xpress® & Service
Platforms. “Thanks to the expanded
regional coverage and additional
manufacturing capabilities, we can
increase our service offering.” With the
acquisition, Freudenberg Xpress® is
thus further expanding the capacities
of its existing core business with
CNC-turned products. “In addition,
complementary manufacturing
processes for small and medium
production volumes will allow us to
increase our service promise in the
area of customer-specific product
solutions,” Grünschloß continues.
The acquisition also allows a significantly
expanded range of Freudenberg’s
own materials to be included in the
Freudenberg Xpress ® portfolio, explains
Grünschloß. “Freudenberg’s materials
competence and expertise are currently
more in demand than ever. It is therefore
a strategic decision for Freudenberg
Xpress ® to make even greater use of this
capability in order to offer even better
solutions tailored to the customer.”

A passivation service
with reliable turnaround
assivation is a chemical process
Pdesigned to improve corrosion
resistance on stainless steel parts. Its
purpose is to remove iron filings and
other contaminants left behind as a
result of machining and fabrication
processes.
Unfortunately, the process of
passivation is often beset with
difficulties concerning reliability of
service and precision of delivery.
Not so with William Hughes. The
company offers a standard 5 working
day turnaround with an express 24
hour option when necessary. William
Hughes promises that customers will
get their parts as and when they’re
needed.
The William Hughes factory at
Stalbridge, Dorset contains an 80m²
clean room and state-of-the-art
automated passivation plant. The
hi-tec passivation process, which is
Nadcap accredited and Honeywell
Aerospace approved, involves a
series of precise chemical treatments
that eliminate contaminants from
stainless steel surfaces. Its novel
functionality means that there is no
‘dunking’ of component baskets from
station-to-station, as with traditional
systems. Instead, the plant performs
‘fluid transfer’, moving chemical
solutions from holding tanks into the
main processing unit as required.
This prevents damage to the parts as
they are not required to move.
The entire process is fully automated
and PLC controlled with typical
treatments featuring nitric acid and
rinse cycles, followed by a further
rinse in deionised water. The parts are
air-dried in a clean room environment
to prevent recontamination.
This systematic approach ensures
that the stainless steel is not
only corrosion-resistant but also
maintains its mechanical properties
and surface finish, crucial for highstakes
manufacturing applications.

The future of welding
he UK is facing a crisis in its
Twelding workforce and the
numbers are alarming. WorldSkills
UK estimates a shortage of more
than 35,000 skilled professionals.
The UK’s 2025 industrial strategy
green paper specifically states, “The
UK has a lack of technical skills –
such as in electrical, mechanical,
and welding trades.”
So how does an entire
industry change
its image and its
future...
For Chris
Houston,
Managing
Director of
Tadweld, a
leading steel
fabrication
company, it feels
like not enough
is being done. “Our
welding industry is
facing a cliff-edge moment,
where skills shortages are going to
cripple our ability to manufacture
steel structures here in the UK.
We all have a role to play, with
action needed across Education,
Government and Industry.”
For the government, there needs
to be far more deliberate attention
on our nation’s manufacturing
capability. The recently published
industrial strategy is a start in
recognising that we have a problem,
but it falls way short of identifying
the solutions to skills shortages like
welding.
One immediate action could be
the incentivisation of welding
apprenticeships. While
apprenticeships
themselves are 95%
funded through
the Apprentice
Levy that began
in 2017, the
cost of an
apprenticeship
to employers
has soared
in recent
years with a
66% increase in
national minimum
wage for apprentices
between 2023 and 2025.

Reduce sound transference with CaberAcoustic
What is the best sound-reducing floorboard
range on the market?
CaberAcoustic from West Fraser is a highly versatile,
effective and economical sound-reducing flooring
solution. Reducing both impact and airborne transmitted
sounds, it can be laid over concrete and timber floors in
both new and existing buildings. CaberAcoustic comes
in 18mm and 22mm thicknesses.
Can it be laid directly over joists?
CaberAcoustic cannot be fitted directly on to flooring
joists – it is an overlay board. It should always be laid as a
floating floor directly on top of an existing flooring deck.
Does it completely reduce noise level?
CaberAcoustic reduces sound; it will not completely proof
buildings or rooms from the transference of sound.
How is the flooring fixed?
CaberAcoustic is recommended to be laid and fitted
with D3 PVA glue in the tongue and groove joints.
What is the total decibel reduction that can be
achieved?
19dB is the reduction in sound transference when
CaberAcoustic is installed on its own. Greater
reductions are reached when used within a system for
noise transference reductions. There are three flooring
systems; detailed on the West Fraser UK website.

premium floors is
announcing the launch of
its new lacquer, Bona Mega
EVO . This next generation
lacquer offers a new stateof-the-art
crosslinking technology that activates
when applied.
The unique, non-yellowing formula delivers faster
curing with excellent resistance to scratches,
wear, and chemicals. With VOC levels below
3%, the lacquer contributes to healthier working
conditions with a lower impact on indoor air
quality.
Bona Mega EVO is the next evolution of Bona
Mega, which was first introduced in 1996 and
offered an industry-first oxygen crosslinking
technology and, at the time, was considered a
top choice among flooring contractors for use
as a one-component topcoat for wood floors
in environments requiring medium to light
commercial wear resistance.
Bona Mega EVO is the next generation that
incorporates a completely new and significantly
faster technology that is unique to Bona. The self
crosslinking occurs entirely within the lacquer
without the use of any external components,
making it a next generation coating

Why is felt used rather than foam?
The felt that is bonded to the underside of the chipboard is
environmentally friendly as it is made from recycled fibres.
Which way up is it laid?
CaberAcoustic is laid with the felt side down. The
transference of sound through air or impact is reduced
when the flooring has been laid using the correct system.

Trading update & notice of results
ames Halstead plc, the
Jcommercial flooring
manufacturer and international
distributor, is providing the
following trading update ahead
of its interim results for the half
year to 31 December 2024.
The Company sells, for the most part, commercial
flooring across the world and has seen increased
confidence in the segment of resilient sheet flooring
that is sold into the healthcare, education and other
institutional sectors. Regional sales into the Middle
East and the Americas have been particularly buoyant.
Overall sales are slightly below last year with profit
before tax comparable to the level in H1 2024.
In the UK, the core home market, the Company has
experienced more caution following the incoming
government’s first budget and the subsequent
changes to living wage and national insurance. Our
UK sales in the first six months are in line with the
comparative but have been constrained, in part, as
The collection is offered in a versatile
palette of warm and cool shades with
Ivory Mist, Moonstone Beige, Greylink,
Swallow Tail and Marble White
among its 14 colour options.
Enchantment Twist is fully certified
for quality and safety, with Class
22 General Domestic and Class 31
Light Commercial classification,
Luxury Class 3, and compliance
with BS EN 1307:2014. It is CE
compliant, manufactured to ISO 9001, 14001, and
45001 standards, and comes with a seven year wear
warranty, reinforcing Furlong Flooring’s commitment
to providing durable, reliable, and environmentally
responsible flooring solutions.

a result of lower confidence
leading to customers revising
their capital spend and deferring
renewal. Additionally, the six
month period has also seen a
degree of destocking in our UK
distributor customers. Despite
this, and given the level of
backlog of repairs and renewals in the health sector
and education, we can only be confident of prospects
in the UK.
In overseas markets there are many positives
in our broad reach of sales. While Australia and
New Zealand sales have declined, turnover in the
Americas, the Middle East and Mediterranean is
progressing. The Company remains ungeared with
cash levels broadly similar to the comparative (2023:
£62.4m) notwithstanding increased dividends and
higher UK corporation tax.

Barometer has highlighted
trust as a defining challenge for
businesses, EC-PR commissioned
research in collaboration with 3Gem
specifically focused on mid-sized technology
companies to better understand what influences their
clients’ buyers.
EC-PR’s report clearly signposts the specific actions
tech vendors can take to secure the Trust Advantage
– from how they communicate pricing to how they
demonstrate expertise during the discovery phase.
The Trust Advantage reports on a survey of
200 senior technology buyers from mid-sized
companies across five sectors: Defence, IT & Tech,
Manufacturing and Science & Engineering, revealing
that 50% prioritise trust above all other considerations
when selecting vendors.
The research highlights a fundamental shift in
procurement priorities, particularly as economic
pressures mount. Nearly half (49%) of buyers report
that trust becomes “much more important” during
economic downturns, directly influencing decisions
worth millions of pounds.
A critical finding reveals that 28% of buyers struggle
most to trust vendors during the research & discovery
stage – before any sales engagement takes place.
This period, when potential clients evaluate websites,
content and credentials independently, represents
the biggest trust hurdle in the buying journey. The
findings suggest that PR, thought leadership and
brand visibility are no longer optional marketing
activities, but essential trust-building mechanisms
that influence procurement outcomes.

Aspray London South
announces exciting expansion
n a significant development
Ifor the Aspray network, Jack
Parkhouse, a leading loss
assessor, has announced the
expansion of his successful
operation into Basingstoke. This
move comes after four years of
remarkable growth and service
delivery across South London,
where Jack and his team
have managed an increasing
number of claims, showcasing their commitment to
excellence and outstanding customer care.
The decision to expand into Basingstoke was
driven by Jack’s personal connection to the area,
where he resides with his family. This new territory
offers an unparalleled opportunity to focus on
local engagement, supporting the community, and
fostering relationships with local suppliers and
contractors.
Jack expressed his enthusiasm for the expansion,
stating, “I am thrilled to have taken on the

phishing attacks last year
he latest Egress Email Threat Landscape 2024
Treport has uncovered a concerning surge in
phishing attacks, with 94% of companies falling
victim to these malicious tactics in the past year.
The report, which sheds light on organisations’
evolving cybersecurity challenges, has sparked
widespread concern among industry experts and
cybersecurity leaders.
AJ Thompson, Chief Commercial Officer at
Northdoor plc, commented on the findings, stating,
“We have all learned over the past couple of years
that phishing is one of the most effective ways
for cybercriminals to gain access to a company’s
data and infrastructure. The extent of the attacks is
perhaps less well-recognised, which makes Egress’
report all the more shocking.”
The report showcases the pervasive nature of
phishing attacks, revealing that 96% of the affected
companies experienced negative repercussions.
The main phishing attacks identified in the report
Basingstoke territory. We have
found ourselves more engaged
with our local community as
our children have grown and
become tied to local schools
and sports teams and we
feel now more than ever that
working locally and being part
of the community has great
significance and value. If we can
develop the same reputation
for service and helping policyholders across the
Basingstoke area that we have in South London, then
I will be very pleased.”
A key factor in the decision to expand was
the development of a robust team capable of
maintaining the high level of service Aspray is known
for. Over the past year, preparing for this growth
has been a priority for Jack, culminating in positive
feedback and outstanding reviews from customers.

attachments, and compromised account infiltrations.
The escalating sophistication of cybercriminal
tactics poses a significant challenge for
organisations and their employees in identifying and
combatting these attacks, leading to an increase in
successful breaches and their associated damages.
Furthermore, the report highlights the substantial
long-term impact of successful phishing attacks, with
96% of companies facing negative consequences,
up from 86% in the previous year. The repercussions
extend beyond financial losses, significantly
impacting individuals within organisations.
Shockingly, 74% of employees involved in attacks
faced disciplinary actions, dismissals, or voluntary
departures, underscoring the severity of the issue
and the heightened vigilance among companies in
addressing the phishing threat.

FANUC calls for wider
automation uptake
ANUC UK’s Managing Director,
FTom Bouchier, has highlighted
the importance of automation in
ensuring the UK fully realises the
value that the manufacturing sector
can bring to our economy. Speaking
at the first day of FANUC UK’s
Open House event in Coventry, he
stated, “Despite our heritage as a
leading manufacturing nation, we’ve
slipped to 12th place in the global
manufacturing league table. This
is in part due to our reluctance to
automate, which is in turn impacting
productivity levels. Manufacturing
already contributes so much to the
UK – it directly accounts for 8%
of our GDP, with its wider impact
when looking down the supply
chain driving up this figure to an
impressive 23%.
“Yet we are well below the global
average for automation uptake of
162 robots per 10,000 workers, at
just 119 robots per 10,000 workers.
Increasing automation levels will
not only help manufacturers combat
labour challenges and sustainability
concerns, it will also increase our
productivity levels and enable us
to compete globally as a leading
manufacturing nation, benefiting
not only the sector but the country
as a whole.”
MACHINERY & MANUFACTURING PRODUCTS & SERVICES
Fast establishing itself as the
highlight of the automation calendar,
FANUC UK’s annual Open House
event showcases the full spectrum
of industrial automation. Combining
expert presentations, panel debates
and end-user case studies with
hands-on robot demonstrations, a
packed exhibition area, and the live
finals of the WorldSkills UK Industrial
Robotics competition, it perfectly
highlights the benefits of automation
to UK manufacturers and other key
stakeholders.

OPEN MIND releases hyperMILL ® 2025
Ease of use for CAM models and powerful CAD functions
OPEN MIND presents
the 2025 release of its
hyperMILL ® CAD/CAM
suite. The highlight of the new
version is the easy-to-use,
automatic deburring function.
The 2025 release includes a
new tessellation algorithm
and a simplified element
display for CAD models,
which help further accelerate
the CAD part of the software.
Deburred edges and holes
are not only crucial from a
functional point of view, but
also contribute significantly
to the quality and value of
the end product. hyperMILL ®
2025 offers a package with three new
strategies for deburring directly on the machine.
Users can deburr a wide variety of component
geometries quickly and reliably. 5-axis
Deburring is an
effective solution
for breaking the
sharp edges of a
component. Once
the edges have
been selected,
the strategy
calculates
all toolpaths
automatically. The
strategy supports
both a 3-axis and
a 5-axis mode, in
which machining
is indexed where
possible. The
same applies
to the strategy
for deburring edges on holes and intersecting
holes. Another strategy in this context is hole
brushing, in which a special brushing tool
deburrs cross holes, threads, or other features
or improves the surface quality. The machining
process is divided into different phases, and
the machining parameters such as spindle,
feedrate, speed, coolant, and dwell time can
be defined for each phase.
5-axis machining of ISO
surfaces with increased surface
quality and programming
support through intelligent
algorithms
The improved version of 5-axis profile
finishing incorporates many familiar
and innovative functions from 3D profile
finishing
hyperMILL ® 2025 offers a
package with comprehensive
strategies for deburring
directly on the machine
5-axis automatic mode
The new 5-axis algorithm
in hyperMILL ® calculates
an optimum machining
sequence of simultaneous
and indexed tool
movements, thanks to the
pre-analysis of the entire
toolpath. Indexed processing
(which is preferred, as it runs
faster) and simultaneous
processing phases are
selected automatically. The
new 5-axis ISO Machining
strategy allows surfaces to
be machined according to
the course of the ISO lines
(U and V). A new highprecision
surface mode
with a homogeneous point distribution can be
used here, in addition
to feed adjustment for
curvatures and 3D radius
correction. This is also
available in 5-axis profile
finishing for surface
and cavity machining.
Both strategies are
adaptations of proven
3D techniques.
Milling and turning
The pocket milling
algorithm has been
redeveloped for
3D-optimised roughing
in order to achieve
greater efficiency during
roughing, especially when machining large
lateral infeeds. You can better control toolpath
rounding by defining the contour radius and
the path radius separately. This is important
for the new ‘Axis Parallel mode’
machining strategy when
machining flat surfaces. There
are also new functions for
turning. It is now possible to
use the 3D model to create a
V-sketch for turning contours
very quickly and easily. You can
use the V-sketch to define the
dimensions and tolerances.
Based on these values, the
turning contour can be moved to
the centre of the tolerance.
The new automatic stock chain
provides security, especially
when switching between
turning and milling operations
or other projects with a large
number of process steps.
hyperMILL ® creates all stock automatically
and in the correct sequence, even if the job
sequence has been changed.
hyperMILL ® VIRTUAL Machining
Lathes with a turret and a main spindle are
mapped as a digital twin for hyperMILL ®
Job calculation with a virtual machine:
More precise and optimised toolpaths,
especially in tight spaces or when the
machine head is working close to the
component or at the machine’s limits
hyperMILL ® VIRTUAL
Machining technology
now provides support
for lathes with a turret
and a main spindle in
conjunction with FANUC
and Mitsubishi controls
New handling of stock: hyperMILL ® creates
all stock automatically and in the correct
sequence across all processing modes
VIRTUAL Machining. Turning in hyperMILL ®
now supports FANUC and Mitsubishi controls
as well as Siemens controls. Another new
feature is job calculation
with the virtual machine.
This means that the
machine model is
available to hyperMILL ®
during toolpath
calculation. Collision
control and avoidance
are carried out taking
machine geometry and
limits into account. It
results in more precise,
optimised toolpaths,
especially in tight
spaces.
hyperMILL ® and
Hummingbird-MES:
Improved tool management
The integration between hyperMILL ® and
Hummingbird-MES is also progressing, for
example, in the area of tool management. The
release of the new version means
that users can benefit from an
even deeper integration of both
systems. Tool data from the
hyperMILL ® tool database can
now be managed consistently
and conveniently across systems.
Tools can be exported directly
from hyperMILL ® , including all
relevant technology parameters.
These tools are automatically
locked in hyperMILL ® as soon
as they are transferred to
Hummingbird in order to avoid
inconsistent tool data. This
creates a consistent, reliable,
and efficient process for tool
management – from the CAM
system to Hummingbird and other
systems such as a tool presetter.

Introducing Scalibur TM : Nextlevel
potato slicing with Dual
Rotation Technology
AM STUMABO introduces
Fthe Scalibur TM , a
revolutionary potato
slicer designed to deliver
unmatched gentleness and
efficiency. This innovative
machine features a patented
rotation technology where
both the cutting head and the
impeller rotate for a controlled
and gentle cutting process.
Whereas potatoes were
previously pushed against
a static knife, the Scalibur TM
features a rotating blade that
slices through the potato at a lower
speed. This, combined with the
independent centrifugal force of the
impeller, minimises impact damage
to the potato’s cell structure. This
results in less starch and scrap loss
and thus less fryer contamination.
The slicer is equipped with powerful
dual stainless-steel motors and
the patented Smart Slicing system
allows differential speed adjustments
with varying gravities. The reduced
impact on blades and segments from
foreign objects results in lower parts
consumption and repair costs.
The slicer is widely used in potato
chip production, but also delivers
perfect results in the production
of vegetable chips from carrots,
beetroot, sweet potatoes, taro,
parsnip, etc. Supplied with a
full range of interchangeable
cutting heads, Scalibur TM allows
for different types of cuts to
be produced: flat, crinkle or
V-cut slices or sticks in many
dimensions.

Treinforced its commitment to positioning the UK
metals industry as a key driver of economic growth,
innovation, and national resilience following a pivotal
meeting with Chris McDonald MP.
With growing political backing, BBM is playing a
leading role in ensuring that metals, a sector omitted
as a growth sector from the UK Government’s
Industrial Strategy, are recognised as an industry of
opportunity that underpins national infrastructure,
defence, advanced manufacturing, and sustainability.
At the latest BBM strategy meeting, industry leaders
and key stakeholders gathered to outline priorities
for the sector in the short, medium and long term.
The discussions focused on the sector’s global
competitiveness, investment potential and its place
in the UK’s industrial strategy. The meeting reaffirmed
the need to present metals as a vital part of the UK’s
future economic strategy and to demonstrate the
value of the sector across multiple industries.
BBM represents the entire metals ecosystem,
covering all alloys and supply chains from primary
production to recycling and re-use. With the support
of a broad coalition of trade associations and industry
leaders, the initiative is committed to securing the
future of the UK metals sector and advocating for its
recognition as a vital part of the economy.
A key focus of the initiative is achieving greater
policy recognition for the UK metals sector. The
government’s recent Industrial Strategy did not
include metals as an individual growth sector, which
risks overlooking an industry that is essential to
national infrastructure, defence, and advanced
manufacturing. BBM is working to ensure that metals
are recognised within government policy and that the
industry receives the support and investment it needs
to remain competitive.

Pushing the boundaries of
electric vehicle cable testing
or EV owners, reliability is essential — and
Fadvances in cable testing are improving
performance and sustainability. Marcus Schneck,
CEO of norelem, highlights the company’s role in
supporting this crucial aspect of e-mobility.
EV cables must be reliably insulated. EMBE’s solution
tests this by applying a voltage to one wire and
moving it closer to another until the insulation fails.
This required precise mechanics with repeatability
of ±0.02mm.
CAD-integrated webshop. The free CAD models also
helped streamline design.
Cost-efficiency was key – some components couldn’t
be made in-house for less than €400.
A great example is EMBE Machining, a precision
engineering company in Markgröningen, Germany.
EMBE used norelem’s standardised components to
develop a high-precision measurement device to test
cable insulation in EVs.
To ensure safe operation under extreme temperatures,
Around two-thirds of the device was built with

By collaborating with BPI Asset Disposal

Choosing asset disposal specialists

European corporate
distress continues to rise,
weighing heavily on retail
and industrials sectors
he latest Weil
TEuropean
Distress Index
(WEDI) indicates
a rise in corporate
distress across
Europe as of
February 2025,
reaching its highest
level in six months.
Germany and the
UK have experienced particularly sharp
increases, contributing to the upward
trend. Distress levels have now risen in
four of the past five months, driven by
declining confidence and heightened
volatility. Whilst the markets
component has provided some relief,
its impact has been outweighed by
other factors.
Regional spotlight
Germany: German corporate distress
has surged to its highest level since
July 2020, the height of the pandemic,
driven by weak investment, poor
profitability and falling valuations. This
rise is compounded by a steep decline
in exports and manufacturing output,
economic contractions, weakening
domestic consumption and pressures
on trade, adding
further uncertainty.
United Kingdom:
Distress levels in
the UK have also
risen, with levels at
their highest since
September 2023.
Growing fears of
a deteriorating
economic outlook have shaken
investor and consumer confidence,
contributing to tighter liquidity.
Concerns around investment have
also likely heightened following
changes in Employee National
Insurance Contributions and the
National Living Wage.
France: Corporate distress has
reached its highest level since August
2020, mirroring broader trends across
Europe. Economic stagnation and
declining consumer confidence
have tightened liquidity and slowed
investment.
