It’s an exciting—and still evolving—time
for women in business. Never have there
been so many pathways to success,
whether in corporate boardrooms or
through launching independent ventures and
professional practices. Here in our region,
especially, the landscape is rich with female
go-getters—women who lead, innovate,
and build on the legacy of those who broke
barriers before them.
a
A century ago, only about 20% of women
participated in the workforce, many in
domestic roles. By 1960, that number had
climbed to roughly one-third. The decades
that followed ushered in pivotal changes,
including the Equal Pay Act of 1963, aimed
at narrowing wage disparities, and a late-
1960s shift that made gender-segregated job
listings illegal. Still, it wasn’t until 1988, with the
passage of the Women’s Business Ownership
Act, that women could secure business loans
without a male co-signer—a milestone that
fundamentally reshaped entrepreneurship.
Today, women make up nearly half of the
U.S. workforce, and their presence continues
to grow in fields once largely closed to
them. Women now account for roughly
39% of physicians and about 41% of lawyers
nationwide—figures that continue to trend
upward. Entrepreneurship is also surging:
there are more than 14 million women-owned
businesses in the U.S., collectively generating
close to $3.3 trillion in annual revenue.
Progress is evident beyond the workplace
as well. The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano
Cortina, Italy, marked the most genderbalanced
Winter Games in history, with a
record 47% female participation—a striking
contrast to 1960, when women made up just
over 21% of competitors.
A key driver behind this momentum is
connection. Women have long excelled at
building networks, sharing knowledge, and
lifting one another up—an approach that
continues to fuel personal and professional
growth.
If you’re an aspiring entrepreneur—or simply
looking for inspiration, connection, and
support—these local events and resources
are worth exploring.
Hear from some of the region’s most
accomplished women leaders at the
Sacramento Women’s Conference:
Her Power, Our Progress, typically held
each spring.
Closer to home, Choose Folsom
hosts the annual HER Women’s
Conference, a full-day experience
focused on personal growth, wellness,
and meaningful connection through
workshops and speaker sessions (next
date to be announced).
The Placer Women’s Retreat,
presented by the Placer Breast Cancer
Foundation, offers interactive wellness
and lifestyle workshops, along with
community-building opportunities
(next date to be announced).
In addition, the following
organizations—along with local
chambers of commerce—provide free
or low-cost counseling, training, and
mentorship:
SBA Women’s Business Centers, sba.
gov/local-assistance/resource-partners/
womens-business-centers

California Women’s Business Centers
Network, californiawbc.org
Sacramento Valley NAWBO (National
Association of Women Business
Owners), nawbo-sac.org/about-nawbo

Together, these resources—and the
women who power them—continue
to shape a more equitable, dynamic
future for business.

Jennifer Tommasini: Building Community Through The Gift of Kids
For over 20 years, Jennifer Tommasini has called El Dorado
Hills home. As a mother of four, her journey into business wasn't
planned—it was personal.
In 1999, after struggling to find the "right" childcare for her son,
Jennifer found herself disappointed by programs that didn't meet
her expectations. Rather than settling, she made a life-changing
decision: she would create the kind of childcare environment she
wished existed. That decision became The Gift of Kids.
What began as a small in-home daycare has grown into two
thriving campuses, including The Gift of Kids Nook, serving
infants, toddlers, and two & threes. Today, Jennifer leads a
team of 50 dedicated educators committed to exceptional care
and education.
Her programs emphasize strong curriculum, nutritious homestyle
meals, and meaningful community events. She is passionate
about staying on the cutting edge of early education, including
a deep interest in neuroscience and how children learn at their
highest potential. That commitment extends to her staff through
apprenticeship programs, stipends for higher education, and coaching
focused on best practices in early childhood education. All of this is
possible through her partnership with EDCOE
She leads by example. Jennifer returned to school herself, earning
her Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and a teaching
credential while continuing to take additional classes whenever
possible.
Family has always been at the heart of Jennifer's journey. Her daughter,
a CSU Chico graduate in child development, serves as director at the
main campus. Her other children have all contributed to the centers
over the years, making The Gift of Kids a true family endeavor.
In 2025, Jennifer opened a second location, and launched a
scholarship program for high school seniors who once attended
The Gift of Kids—a reflection of her long-term investment in the
community she serves.
For Jennifer, this is more than a business. It's a legacy.

Sylvan Learning of Granite Bay
8659 Auburn Folsom Rd // Granite Bay
916-234-3314 // sylvanlearning.com
Sara Yang is the Owner and Center Director of Sylvan
Learning of Granite Bay, bringing over a decade of
experience in education and a clear vision for how students
learn and grow. Her path into education was shaped by her
experience as a parent navigating the challenge of finding
academic support that was both effective and engaging.
Recognizing that gap, Sara built her center to deliver both
structure and confidence-building.
At Sylvan, Sara has created an environment where learning
is personalized, measurable, and motivating. Each student
begins with a comprehensive assessment, followed by an
individualized plan that evolves with their progress. Her
team supports students across reading, math, writing, study
skills, and test preparation, while providing structured
homework support that keeps students on track while closing
foundational gaps.
In just two years, Sara and her team have helped students
from kindergarten through high school achieve meaningful,
often multi-grade-level growth. She focuses not only
on academic progress, but on helping students rebuild
confidence and reshape how they see themselves as learners,
because that shift drives lasting results. For Sara, success is
not just measured in grades, but in how a student begins to
approach learning with confidence and ownership.

Beyond the Chamber:
The Women Driving Folsom Forward
n many cities, economic
I development, tourism, and
business advocacy operate in silos.
In Folsom, they operate as one — and
behind that unified approach is a
team largely led by women.
What began as a traditional Chamber
of Commerce evolved into Choose
Folsom, a cohesive model bringing
together business advocacy, tourism,
and economic development under
one vision, led by CEO Joe Gagliardi.
At the center is a team shaped by
diverse backgrounds and shared
purpose. Leaders like Sally Buchanan
and Shannon Robb position Folsom
as both a destination and a place of
opportunity, while Jennifer Cliff and
Rachel Clark ensure that story gets
told. Jody Franklin, Taryn Grows,
Haley Limpach, Sara Minnehan,
Taylor Reed, and Coleen Schwietert

What makes the model work is
collaboration. Tourism supports

While the team is largely women-led,
key male leaders play an important

People often ask me what I love most about being an Interior
Designer and it is the joy of working with clients and seeing the
vision come to fruition. The beauty is hearing what clients are
wanting their space to feel like and at the same time granting the
ability to stretch them into selections that make each space feel
unique and also inviting.
Suzanne Cook's leadership at Scott's Seafood Roundhouse
in Historic Folsom, California, epitomizes dedication and
resilience. Initially balancing roles as a stay-at-home mom
and part-time restaurant manager with her husband, John
Cook, Suzanne juggled event coordination, bookkeeping, and
community involvement, including PTSA and Girl Scout
leadership. The 2019 relocation of Scott's from Greenback Lane
to Sutter Street marked a pivotal challenge, compounded by
the pandemic and the losses of General Manager Tim Hughes
and co-owner John Cook. Now fully at the helm, Suzanne
exemplifies strength and grace, ensuring Scott's remains a pillar
of culinary excellence and community spirit.
