over population growth
BY KEILLER MACDUFF AND
DANIEL ALVEY
Darfield residents have
expressed major concerns
about the lack of forward
planning from health officials.
About 150 people attended
a public meeting organised by
Health NZ last week.
The most common concern
from residents was Health NZ
still using 2023 Census data for
its growth modelling.
For Darfield, the
Census predicted a population
of 6419 by 2054.
But with a possible 2300
homes on the cards in
the next 10-15 years, the
population could grow to
about 9000 by 2040.
The information
appeared to surprise the
Health NZ representatives
at the meeting.
Said Health NZ group manager
Aroha Metcalf at the meeting:
“That was new information
tonight, but that’s why we need
to work closely with the council.
“Traditionally, health planning
has always relied on census data
and census projections is based
on what’s happened in the past
10 years extrapolated forward
— it’s that new information that
Aroha Metcalf
we need to build into our planning
processes.
“So no, our current planning
has not taken that into account,
but our future planning will.”
Health NZ spokesperson Greg
Hamilton told Selwyn Times
between each census, projections
on population growth are
generally undertaken annually,
and are based on a range of
available information such as
housing consents.
Mayor Lydia Gliddon
said the massive growth
in the region was nothing
new, and neither was the
discussion around health.
“This conversation
around health has been
going on for years,” she
said at the meeting.
“And actually, you get a
little tired of having the
same conversation over
and over and over without any
different outcome, so it’s about
time we need to actually deliver
on this.”
There were 15,000 people in
Malvern Ward with Darfield as
its hub, Gliddon said.
“I think the data sits around
30% of people from Malvern
actually go outside of Selwyn
District for services.

To achieve this goal you n ed to
develop some awarene s around the
basic requirements of exercising for
health and fitne s. First and foremost
this has to do with 3 key principles:
1. How often do you train?
To improve your level of health and
fitne s you wi l n ed to aim for 4
se sions per w ek. 2 or 3 se sions per
w ek wi l only maintain what you have
and 1 se sion per w ek is definitely not
sufficient.
2. How long are your se sions?
The duration of your se sions wi l
genera ly build towards betw en 30
and 50 minutes with one longer se sion
of 60-80 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at?
The g od thing abou the programme
is that a l you runs wi l be done
at submaximal pace, also ca led
conversation pace. That means a pace
where you can sti l talk. If you can’t
talk you are going t o fast and you
are likely to come to a grinding halt
s oner or later.
This programme and a companying
information are wri ten as a guide only. If you
are concerned about your health at any stage
please undergo a health check with your GP.

It was quite commonly used
a long way back, both in print

But it is aptly used to

during the Lincoln Combined v

It was a bruising encounter
which culminated in three
yellow cards after a late tackle
and dust up.
Many of the players would
have played together in last
year’s combined team; Rolleston
College now going it alone,
so it was real mate against

The sides will meet in the

It reminds me of an incident

ordered off. There were no
yellow or red cards back then,
just a loud whistle and a loud
“you’re off” from the referee.
But the Brighton player,
wasn’t going to be messed with
either.
He departed the field as

ANZAC DAY
SATURDAY APRIL 25, 2026
A symbol of remembrance
and sacrifice
By Fiona Robinson
What is one of the most recognisable symbols of
remembrance leading up to Anzac Day? It is the red
poppy. Worn each April in New Zealand and Australia,
and at sites around the world commemorating
ANZAC Day, it honours the soldiers who served and
those who lost their lives in war.
After the fighting acro s Europe during WWI, bright
red poppies were among the first flowers to grow in
the mud and soil of the ba tlefields. These flowers
became a powerful symbol of remembrance after
the famous poem by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel
John McCrae, “In Flanders Fields,” which described
poppies growing among the graves of fa len soldiers.
The red poppy, or Flanders poppy, also came to
represent the sacrifice of soldiers in campaigns such
as the Ga lipoli Campaign. The red poppy became
a symbol of the bravery and sacrifice of those who
served during the Ga lipoli campaign of 1915 and is
central to the ANZAC story.
While the first official Poppy Day in New Zealand was
planned for Armistice Day in 1921, due to a delay in
the shipment of silk poppies from France, it was held
on 24 April 1922, the day before Anzac Day.
For many years, red plastic and paper poppies
were made in Christchurch by members of the
Christchurch Royal New Zealand Returned and
Services’ A sociation (RNZRSA) and were worn
throughout New Zealand. However, as of this year,
the RNZRSA wi l se l a new sustainable poppy made
from biodegradable paper, manufactured by the
Royal British Legion in Kent, England, at this year’s
Poppy Day Appeal.
Today, poppies are sold each year in the lead-up
to Anzac Day during the annual Poppy Appeal
organised by the RNZRSA. Volunteers stand in
towns and shopping areas, se ling the sma l red
poppies that people wear as a visible sign of respect.
The money raised helps support veterans and their
families, including today’s soldiers, a sisting with
welfare, housing, health services, and community
programmes. In communities acro s the country,
including those throughout Selwyn, buying
and wearing a poppy has become a simple but
meaningful way for people to show their gratitude.
The red poppy is a sma l symbol, but it is a powerful
reminder of courage, sacrifice, and remembrance,
and remains part of New Zealand’s history.

The training programme wi l stay the same this w ek as last w ek but may I su ges that you go and explore the geographical
options you have for your training. This means not only exploring your own neighbourh od but also venturing to places like
the Burw od Plantation, the beach or the Port Hi ls. Of course i takes a bit more time as you n ed transport so the w ekend
might be the bes time to do this. The best surface to run on i soft, like gra s, sand or gravel; it is easier on the leg so try and do
the majority of your se sions on these types of surfaces if po sible. If you have time, venture into the Port Hi ls. A g od place to
start is the track which runs betw en the sign of the Takahe and the sign of the Kiwi. This is a gradual incline which you can do
out and back for as far as you can comfortably go. Once you have mastered this track you can venture beyond anywhere in the
port hi ls. Jo ging on the Port Hi ls walking tracks takes a bit of concentration as the te rain underf ot can be uneven. Walking
or jo ging and ru ning uphi l wi l automatica ly increase the intensity a fraction because you use larger muscle groups. It is a
type of endurance training which wi l a celerate your strength and fitne s with incredible views of our beautiful city as an extra
bonus. Going up, take sma l steps and take your time so you stay mainly in zone 1 and 2. Remember that zone 1 is perceived as
an easy e fort which you can maintain for very long periods of time. In zone 2 you wi l get slightly pu fed but you can sti l have a
conversation. Initia ly take it easy on the downhi l. It can be hard on the legs, so go careful. A this time of the year the beach is
also an a tractive option for a workout. The soft sand wi l a d an extra dimension and help the strength development. On hot
days go for the forest or parks as the shade provided by the tr es wi l protect you from the blazing sun. Hagley Park is of course
the jewel in the crown as far as parks go with lots of variety and enough options never to have to do the same route.

Police numbers
to rise as reports
of antisocial
behaviour grow
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Lincoln could soon have an extra
police officer, with recruitment
under way to boost the town’s
frontline presence.
The move comes as
some residents say they
have noticed an increase
in antisocial behaviour,
including late-night door
knocking and vandalism,
in recent months –
although police say
there has been no rise in
incidents.
One resident, whose car
windscreen was smashed
by youths about 11pm last
Tuesday, said frustration in the
community was building.
“I’ve seen a number of issues
on the community page, yet
there seems to be nothing done
to address it,” the resident said.
“It’s definitely on the rise,
hence why you see it all over
the community page.”
The concerns follow other
recent incidents, including
youths throwing lemons at
Peter Cooper
the home of a woman in her
90s and later returning about
1.15am to bang on her windows.
A family member said
police advised removing the
lemons from the tree, and the
behaviour has since
stopped.
In another case, an
82-year-old Lincoln man
armed with a butcher’s
steel chased a group who
had woken him and his
wife at 2am.
Canterbury rural area
commander Peter Cooper
said Lincoln currently
has one community
constable, with police now
recruiting for another officer to
be based in the town.
“Lincoln’s front counter is
manned periodically. Rolleston
station is open between
8am and 4pm on weekdays.
Members of the public can
report a crime or speak directly
to a police staff member during
these hours if they have any
concerns for their safety or
need police support,” he said.
A Lincoln resident had their windscreen smashed in on Tuesday night last week.
Cooper did not respond to
questions about why police
were recruiting another officer
for the town, or if it was in
response to the large amount of
public feedback last year during
consultation on the 24/7 policing
model.
The model, introduced in May
2023, operates Public Safety
Teams (PST) out of Rolleston.
As part of the changes, officers
were moved from Lincoln and
Leeston to bolster those teams.
Lincoln, once a three-officer
station, was reduced to one,
with a focus on community
policing. Leeston dropped from
three officers to two.
During
consultation,
residents
raised concerns
about officers
being taken
from smaller
townships.
“Local police
maintain a Denise Carrick
24/7 response
capability and will respond to
jobs after these hours,” Cooper
said.
“Our Public Safety Teams
regularly patrol the wider rural
areas as part of their duties.
We have sufficient frontline
staff visible and available to
our communities 24/7, and we
deploy our staff where there is
demand.”
Selwyn Times also
understands police may be
recruiting for another officer
in Leeston, but Cooper did not
confirm this.
Selwyn Community Patrol
secretary Denise Carrick said
she had noticed reports of
antisocial behaviour increasing
on social media, but said
incidents are difficult to track if
they are not formally reported.
Carrick said an additional
officer in Lincoln could make
it easier for residents to report
crime.

Nurses ‘hobbled’ over appointment issues
› From Page 1
“That’s a concern I can talk
about – my husband (Matt) is
enrolled in the Waimakariri
district, because he can’t enrol
here.”
Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg was
absent from the meeting due
to “long-standing commitment
elsewhere”.
Independent Selwyn
electorate candidate Zoran
Rakovic said Darfield deserves
better services.
“If we can put a man on the
moon, surely we can put a
doctor in Darfield,” he said at
the meeting.
Grigg said she
has organised
Health Minister
Simeon Brown
and Mental
Health Minister
Matt Doocey
to come to the
district to discuss
rural health.
“The meeting
is open to the
public and will be held on 7
Nicola Grigg
May at 2pm at the West Melton
Community Centre, she said.
Grigg said she also met with
officials before the meeting to
raise residents’ concerns and
seek clarity on the current
provision of health services in
the Malvern area.
“In that meeting, I made it
clear to Health NZ that the
services in our district must
be future proofed to support
growth.”

Another major concern was
the future of Darfield Hospital.
The 10-bed hospital, which
offers respite and palliative
care, suspended admissions
late last year because the new
owners of Darfield Medical
Centre, Green Cross Health, did
not continue supplying doctors
to the hospital.
The medical centre has 7084
patients enrolled and a waiting
list of 190. Distrct nurse Mary
Roberts said they are currently
“hobbled” by not being able
to get the same doctors’
appointments for their patients.
Health NZ’s general manager
of rural health Berni Marra
told the audience she wanted a
solution as quickly as possible.
“We are actively looking for
contracts in general practice
cover. The moment we can
do that, we will go back to
admitting respite and end-of-life
care straight away,” she said.
“If we can put a man on
the moon, surely we can
put a doctor in Darfield.”
Independent Selwyn electorate
candidate Zoran Rakovic
Pam Aldersley, who
co-ordinated the six part-time
district nurses in the area, said
she was aware of more than
two dozen patients in need of
palliative or respite care since
the hospital stopped admitting
patients who had to go to
Christchurch, or go without.
“It’s put immense pressure
on their families to try and
cope, or those patients are sent
into Christchurch where they
don’t have the support of their
families,” she said.
While assurances were
given, the review of the health
services in Darfield would
be completed by the end of
the year, Malvern Health and
Community Welfare Trust chair
Raewyn Feast was sceptical.
“Years ago we had another
meeting with Te Whatu Ora
(Health NZ), at that stage they
had big plans for the hospital –
they were going to stop it being
a hospital and turn it into an
outpatient day centre, and all
these services were going to be
coming out to the hospital like
stroke, dietary and physio . . .
nothing happened,” she said.

School to escalate fight over
‘ridiculous’ speed limit change
BY DANIEL ALVEY
A rural school is planning to take
its case for a lower speed limit to
Parliament.
The speed limit outside Windwhistle
School, on State Highway
77, is currently 100km/h. It is due
to drop to 60km/h during pickup
and drop-off times, but the
school wants it reduced further.
Principal Bronwen Seaward
said she welcomed the change,
but was “disappointed” it would
only be 60km/h.
The school currently
has 40km/h
advisory signs,
but they are not
legally enforceable,
and Seaward
said many drivers
ignore them.
Seaward said
most people do Bronwen
not adhere to the Seaward
advisory signs.
“I've had people drive past
when we have been outside the
school with students still going
100km/h.”
She said the school had
requested a 30km/h limit from
NZ Transport Agency Waka
Kotahi.
A group of year six pupils now
plan to ask Selwyn MP Nicola
Grigg how to make a submission
to Parliament about the speed
limit.
Windwhistle School year 6 pupils from left, Fred Reveley, Dorothy Lang and Dudley King
are part of group planning to make a submission to Parliament about the speed limit
“It was disappointing that we
are not getting the same treatment
as other schools in the
area,” she said.
“It does seem a bit ridiculous
we are twice the speed of the
school in a village.
“We’ve got a 35km/h corner
right before the school and quite
a dangerous intersection and dip,
so there is limited visibility of the
school from both directions.”
Since 2020, NZTA has recorded
seven crashes at the intersection
of SH77 and Leaches Rd, about
500m from the school – one fatal
and four serious.
“It would be good, full stop, for
people to slow down in this area,”
Seaward said.
She said none of the school’s 31
pupils walk or bike, with all either
taking the bus or being driven.
NZTA director of regional relationships
James Caygill said the
school is classified as category
two under Government rules
because students do not walk or
cycle. That means a 60km/h variable
speed limit (VSL) applies.
“The application of 60km/h
VSLs across category two schools
is considered appropriate for the
level of risk, and to ensure consistency
for road users across the
wider roading network,” he said.
Over time, the school has
removed trees and adjusted fencing
to improve visibility.
Seaward said she would like
NZTA to at least
trial a lower speed
limit.
About 20km
along SH77, Glentunnel
School will
have digital signs
installed to reduce
the limit from
60km/h to 30km/h
during pick-up and
drop-off times.
Ed Trotter
Because some of its 101 pupils
walk or bike, it qualifies for the
lower limit.
Glentunnel principal Ed Trotter
said he had been advocating for
the change since arriving at the
school.
“Perseverance has paid off.
This is a tremendous outcome
after four years of discussing this
concern with NZTA,” he said.
The new signs at both schools
are due to be installed in the
coming weeks.
In brief
Stolen Aqua written off
Archna Tandon’s Toyota Aqua – stolen
for a fourth time in about three years
over Easter — has been written off
by her insurance company due to
the damage
caused by
the thieves.
The car was
taken from her
Southfield Dr
property and
later found abandoned in Hornby,
with police unable to identify those
responsible. “It appears there is
currently no evidence to enable us
to identify the offenders,” a police
spokesperson said. Tandon said her
next car will not be another Aqua,
and she plans to make space in her
garage to store it.
William St to be closed
William St in Lincoln will be closed at
the intersection with Gerald St for the
next four weeks as part of the town
centre upgrades. The council will be
constructing a paved threshold and
carrying out road reconstruction.
People are advised to use Kildare
Tce as a detour. Car parks will still be
accessible via William and Lyttelton
Sts.
24-hour planting mission
Canterbury University MBA student
Tom Scott will attempt to plant 500
native trees in 24 hours on Sunday
near Tai Tapu, after raising the $2500
needed to fund the challenge. Scott
said he had received “unreal” support.
“What started as a slightly wild idea
for MBA has turned into something
way bigger than I expected.”

Get ready for winter – keep our drains flowing
Flooding is our most common natural hazard in Selwyn. As we head into the wetter months, now’s the time to take
a few simple steps to help protect your home, your street, and our wider community. Flooding can happen quickly,
but being prepared makes a real difference.
Start with a simple prep talk with your whānau about
what you would do if flooding or another emergency
affected your home. Make sure you have an evacuation
plan, know where you would go, and that everyone
understands what to do if you’re not together.
Having a grab bag ready can also help you act quickly.
It should include essentials like warm clothes, walking
shoes, water, snacks, medications, a torch, radio,
batteries, and copies of important documents. At
home, aim to have enough supplies to last at least three
days, including water, food that doesn’t need cooking,
and supplies for pets or babies.
What Council is doing
The Council works across the entire drainage
network. This includes:
ŧ
ŧ
ŧ
Monitoring and cleaning ponds, pipes and
open drains
Clearing roadsides and on-street gutters in
high leaf-fall areas
Removing obstructions that reduce drainage
capacity, so water can flow effectively during
heavy rain
If you spot a blocked street drain, let us
know through Snap Send Solve or call 0800
SELWYN (735 996).
Working together helps keep Selwyn’s drainage
network operating at its best.
How you can help
ŧ
ŧ
ŧ
ŧ
ŧ
On your property the same simple steps can
make a big difference - keeping drainage
clear is a shared responsibility.
Clear your gutters
Scoop out those autumn leaves so rain can
flow freely.
Check drains
Ensure your outdoor drains aren’t buried
under garden debris.
Flush your downpipes
Run a hose through your downpipes to
check for hidden clogs.
Let water flow
Raking up leaves and clearing dead wood
helps remove blockages for water to flow
away from your house or soak up into
the ground.
Check the flood maps on the Council website. If your
property has an overland flow path, make sure it’s clear of
obstructions and that any fences have gaps beneath to
let water flow through.
You can find more tips on preparing for flooding and other
emergencies in the ‘Are You Ready?’ guide, available at
Selwyn libraries, service centres, the Rolleston Council
Office, or online at selwyn.govt.nz/areyouready.
Guide to the
Council
If you’ve ever wondered what the
Council does, a new guide is available to
help answer any questions.
Every three years councils are required to
publish a Local Government Statement.
This guide explains how the Council is run,
what the Council does for the community,
who is responsible for making decisions,
how those decisions are made and how
the community can have their say in
those decisions.
It helps you understand the role of elected
representatives and staff, how decisions
are made openly and fairly, and how the
Council is expected to act when serving
the public.
The guide covers everything from the
principles of how the Council works,
including our different committees and
areas of work, down to the laws and
bylaws that govern how the Council works
and how they affect you.
It also explains the different ways you can
be involved through access to Councillors,
consultation, LGOIMAs, and our electoral
system and representation arrangements.

Mosquito gets a boost
The 26-year-long restoration
of a rare World War 2 fighterbomber
has received a huge
boost.
The Air Force Museum of
New Zealand has allowed the
restoration team access to the
aircraft parts they have in
storage.
Dag Guest and his team of four
volunteers have been painstakingly
rebuilding a de Havilland
Mk VI Mosquito at Ferrymead
Heritage Park. It is one of only
30 remaining worldwide, four
of which are still capable of flying.
Progress on the twin-engine
fighter-bomber’s restoration
had been hampered by a global
shortage of parts.
Guest said getting access to the
museum’s stored parts will "significantly"
speed up the historic
aircraft's restoration.
“It’s an absolute game-changer
for us. There are many parts
that we were missing, which
we can use or copy. Within a
few seconds of being here I’d
seen a flap shroud that will save
60 hours of work for me. It is
fantastic.’’
A majority of the Mosquito
parts were stored at RNZAF’s
Weedons base until 2017 when
the station closed.
The ambitious restoration
project has combined the fuselage
of a Mosquito NZ2328 with
the wings of a Mosquito HR339
into a single aircraft for static
display.
The HR339 flew 31 combat
operations between December
1944 and May 1945.
“It saw action over Germany,
and it was severely damaged by
flak while attacking a train during
operation Clarion, forcing it
to belly-land at an emergency
airfield” said Guest.
After extensive repairs, HR339
returned to 487 Squadron in
April 1945 where it continued its
service.
“It's a very historically significant
aircraft” said Guest.

Mosquito aircraft had been
saved and stored since the
museum opened.
“We do not have the time or
resources to put into a Mosquito
build from the parts we have,
and Dag is 26 years into his
restoration. It makes absolute
sense to help with whatever we
can, so that collectively we can
save this incredibly rare and
significant aircraft, which will
remain in public ownership
in New Zealand as part of this
country’s military aviation.’’

Billboard consent breach
was a ‘genuine mistake’
BY DANIEL ALVEY
A controversial digital billboard
has been switched off after it
was found to be non-compliant.
The billboard on Springs Rd,
Prebbleton, is about 50m from a
pedestrian crossing.
The 9m high sign was turned
on earlier this month, but the
companu behind it was hit with
an abatement notice from the
council. Its consent stated the
billboard screens were to be
perpendicular to the road, but
they were installed at an angle.
The sign was built by
Addington-based business Vast
Billboards.
Managing director Grant
Moreton said it made a
“genuine mistake”.
He said most billboards built
by the company match the same
shape as the one installed in
Prebbleton.
Moreton said his engineer
is working on new brackets to
make the billboard comply with
its consent.
Council head of planning
Emma Larsen said it is
watching to ensure the
billboard only operates under
the conditions of its consent.
“As this is an ongoing
investigation, we will not
be releasing documents or
making any further comment,”
she said.
25 years: bed by six, up at one
Most people have never set an
alarm for one in the morning. Helen
has been doing this for decades.
She works airport security, which
means shift work. Early starts and the
kind of schedule that flips your body
clock upside down and expects it to
keep ticking.
“On an early shift, you’re going to
bed at half past five in the afternoon,”
she says. “You sleep for a couple of
hours, then you’re awake at seven.
And you know you’ve got to be up
again at one.”
That’s the reality of shift work.
While the rest of the world is having
dinner, you’re trying to sleep. While
they’re watching television, you’re
lying in the dark, willing your body
to cooperate.
Helen has done this for 25 years.
She knows the rhythm. She knows
the cost.
“I go to sleep fine,” she says. “But
I don’t stay asleep.”
She wakes five or six times a sleep
period. And every time she surfaces,
the same thought arrives.
“You start getting angry. Or
panicking. Because you know you’re
going to be awake for the next few
hours, and then you’ve got to get up
and function.”
The dread. The frustration. The
quiet rage at your own body.
“Oh, here we go again,” she’d
think. Night after night.
What people don’t always
understand about broken sleep is
how it bleeds into everything else.
The fog the next day. The shorter
temper. The way decisions feel
harder than they should.
Helen had tried herbal teas. A
herbalist had recommended the right
ingredients. But she wasn’t really a
tea enthusiast.
She didn’t want sleeping tablets.
But she wanted something natural
that could work with her body and
not override it.
That search led her to Koru Sleep.
When she saw the ingredients,
something clicked. Passionflower,
magnesium, valerian. The same
things her herbalist had been
recommending, just in a form she
could actually take that wasn’t tea.
She wasn’t expecting much. When
you’ve been battling sleep for years,
you stop believing anything will shift
the needle. The exhaustion wears
you down. The doubt settles in.
But she tried it anyway.
“That first night, I felt it relax my
nervous system,” Helen says. “It was
a good surprise.”
She still wakes up. That hasn’t
changed. But what has changed is
what happens next.
“I’m not panicking. I’m not getting
angry. It’s like, oh yeah, I’m awake.
And that’s it.”
The shift is subtle but real. Instead
of fighting the wake-up, she accepts it.
Instead of the spiral, there’s stillness.
“It’s just more relaxed,” she says.
“Even though I’m awake, being

relaxed means it’s easier to drift off
again.”
And that relaxation carries
through. The days feel easier. The
fog lifts.
Helen still works her shifts. Still
gets up at one in the morning when
the roster demands it.
But the dread has loosened its grip.
“It’s the best thing I’ve found,” she
says. “When you’re not panicking
every time you wake up, everything
else gets a little easier too.”
Clearer. Calmer. Making decisions
from a steadier place. That’s what
Koru Sleep has given her.
Not a miracle. Just a bit of ground
back under her feet.

struggles see
association’s
future in doubt
BY DANIEL ALVEY
A residents’ group in Lincoln is
struggling to stay afloat due to a
lack of members.
The Lincoln Community and
Residents Association failed to
reach a quorum at its meeting
this month and is now calling for
more people to get involved.
Chair Lindsay Wilson said
attracting volunteers had been a
challenge.
“We have only been sitting on
a committee of seven members,
and it is too slim. It’s a bit sad we
can’t interest people in getting
involved in the community,” he
said.
The association was formed
in 2024 after the Lincoln Community
Committee – previously
run by the council – was disestablished,
along with community
committees across the district.
“Going it alone is proving to be
difficult,” Wilson said
With Lincoln continuing to
grow, Wilson said community
input and representation was
more important than ever.
“We need to keep going and
still need to have a vibrant community
group.”
The association meets at 7pm
on the second Monday of each
month (except January and
December) at the Community
Care office on Lyttelton St.
Lions, community take pride in project
A community-led effort is under
way to restore the Waitātari
Harts Creek boardwalk and
bird hide, a popular recreation
spot closed after reaching the
end of its life.
The boardwalk and bird hide,
located within the Department of
Conservation’s Harts Creek Wildlife
Management Reserve, were
originally built by the Lions Club
of Ellesmere in 1993.
The structures have long
attracted locals, birdwatchers,
school groups and visitors, but
were recently closed by DOC,
with the bird hide removed.
In response, a working group
made up of Lions members,
community representatives,
environmental groups and volunteers
has formed to rebuild
the site.
Project chair Dennis Carter
said the group’s aim is to
improve on what was there
before, not simply replace it.
“We’re working towards a
high-quality, future-proofed
structure that reconnects people
with this incredibly important
wetland,” he said.
Plans include an extended
boardwalk designed to accommodate
mobility scooters and a
new bird hide in a different location
to improve viewing of the
wetland.
The project will also include
planting, weed control and predator
trapping to support native
wildlife.
The wetland is a biodiversity
hotspot, supporting more than
150 bird species and 43 species of
fish, including native eel. It is also

as the Australasian bittern and
the Australasian crested grebe.
Te Taumutu Rūnanga has
given its support in principle,
recognising the cultural importance
of wetlands as mahinga

area).
Carter said progress had
already been made, including
upgrading part of the track
to mobility scooter standard
and securing legal access
arrangements.
Work is also underway with
DOC to finalise the boardwalk
route and bird hide location.
The group is now working
towards a formal agreement
with DOC, while fundraising
and planning for construction.
Interpretive signage is also
being developed to highlight
the site’s ecological and cultural
significance.
“This is a Lions project for
and with the community. We
want people to feel a sense
of ownership and pride in
restoring access to a place that
means so much to so many,”
Carter said.

Devoted father, loyal friend remembered after fatal crash
A former soldier who died in a
crash near his old army base has
been remembered as a “cheeky,
funny and great mate”.
Keelan Breeze McCann, 30,
died in a two-vehicle crash on
State Highway 1 near Burnham
Military Camp just before 7.30am
on Tuesday, April 14. Another
person was seriously injured.
A friend who served with
McCann in the Defence Force told
the New Zealand Herald he was
a devoted husband, loving father
and loyal friend.
“If you ever needed help, Keelan
would have your back,” he said.
McCann joined the New Zealand
Army in 2014 as a heavy
diesel mechanic, giving 10 years
of service before continuing in a
civilian role alongside the army.
He had a passion for working
with his hands, something his
family believed began in the shed
with his grandfather, the friend,
who declined to be named, said.
“No matter where he lived,
there were always a couple of
project cars on the go.
“Sadly, he never got to finish
his prized project, the Toyota
Crown. The boys might have to
do a bit of tinkering ourselves
yet,” he told NZ Herald.
McCann married his childhood
sweetheart, Awhina, in 2021. The
couple had two young daughters.
“Awhi was Keelan’s anchor,
keeping him grounded and helping
him grow into the man many
of us looked up to,” his friend
said.
“Keelan absolutely adored his
children and would have done
anything for them.
“While there has been deep
grief, there has also been an
incredible outpouring of love
and support, not just from those
who knew him, but from the
wider community.’’
A Givealittle page has been
set up to support McCann’s
family. Funds raised will go
towards school and daycare
costs for his children, day-today
living expenses, funeral
costs and time off work for the
family to grieve.
Keelan McCann died after a crash on SH1
near Burnham on Tuesday, April 14.
Libraries top list
for staff abuse
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Library staff in the district
have been subjected to physical
and verbal abuse, as well as
threatening behaviour.
Of all council departments,
the highest
number of reported
incidents came from the
district’s four libraries.
Information released
to Selwyn Times under
the Local Government
Official Information
and Meetings Act shows
library staff were
subjected to 44 of the 160
reported incidents of abuse
Michael Aitken
over the past 12 months.
The incidents included verbal
abuse, threatening behaviour,
aggressive or confrontational
behaviour, and physical abuse
or serious threatening
behaviour.
Council strategy,
engagement and capability
interim executive
director Michael Aitken
said abuse towards staff
would not be tolerated.
“Our position is unequivocal:
Our staff are
members of this community,
and they deserve to
feel safe and respected in their
workplace,” he said.
Library staff made up more than a quarter of the abuse reported by council staff
in the last 12 months.
New Zealand Library
Association chief executive
Laura Marshall said incidents
of abuse and threatening
behaviour are not isolated
situations in libraries across the
country.
“It’s a situation other libraries
have raised, and one that makes
library and information work
more demanding,” she said.
“Library and information
staff are at the frontline of their
communities and work with
all people, including the most
vulnerable.”
Marshall said the association
had developed a toolkit to
help libraries manage these
challenges, along with a register
to track incidents.
“The toolkit provides practical
guidance and supports policy
and protocol development for
libraries facing challenges.”
The parking
team recorded
the secondhighest
number
of incidents, with

Legal Matters
Working From Home -
Is It Working?
While many employers promote the idea that outcomes matter
more than hours, most employment systems still rely heavily on
traditional measures such as time, presence, and availability. In the
legal profession especially, time remains the foundation of how
value is recognised.
Many managers commonly claim that location and hours no
longer matter if work is delivered. But employment agreements
continue to specify rostered hours, availability expectations, and
break requirements signalling that organisations still pay for
input rather than output. Experts note that while output works
as a performance measure for simple or short cycle tasks, it
becomes less reliable in complex, collaborative, or long term work.
Deliverables show what was produced, but not the judgment,
capability development, or trade offs behind the work.
While some view the return to office push as an issue of
supervision, many managers say proximity helps them understand
how work is being done. Being physically present allows managers
to see who asks good questions, who supports colleagues, and
who is struggling which are insights that rarely surface in digital
updates. These behaviours feed into capability assessments,
promotions, and succession planning. Without visibility, high
performers risk becoming less noticeable in remote environments.
Some commentators argue that genuinely shifting to an output
focused model requires more than allowing remote work. Perhaps
businesses need clearer definitions of work, more capable
managers, better ways to measure capability, and development
pathways that make learning visible even from afar.
Employees increasingly want flexibility, and most employers
genuinely want to provide it. Finding a way forward is not easy.
The real future of work isn’t about choosing between the office
and home. It’s about aligning intentions with systems. If employers
want to reward outcomes, build capability, and support flexibility,
they need structures that make those things visible and valued.
Otherwise, hybrid work will remain suspended between aspiration
and reality: outcome driven in theory, input driven in practice
– which is something not quite palatable for anyone. Let’s build
frameworks that reward outcomes.

Rivalry ignites early as
Lincoln come out on top
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Lincoln Combined have claimed early
bragging rights over Rolleston College
in a pre-season match that was friendly
in name only ahead of the start of next
month’s Miles Toyota Championship.
The side, made up of players
from Lincoln High, Darfield High
and Ellesmere College, beat Rolleston
35-13 at Rhodes Park in Tai
Tapu on Thursday night.
Several players lined up against
friends and former teammates,
Rolleston entering a standalone
team this year after previously
being part of Selwyn Combined.
Despite being a pre-season
match, there was no shortage of
intensity, with big hits throughout and
a biffo following a late tackle that saw
three players sin-binned.
“There’s definitely some extra fizz –
they were a bit sharper at training last
Tuesday,” Britain said.

“It was definitely in the calendar for a
while for the boys.”
Lincoln’s final pre-season game is
against Mid Canterbury under 18 on May
9, before opening their campaign against
Roncalli Aoraki Combined on May 16.
Head coach Jade Britain said the team
was building nicely.
“Each week we’re stepping up in
a different areas, and not letting
the others drop,” he said.
“The boys are just really starting
to fizz in the right moments.
We’re getting some good leadership
coming through from senior
players, and some younger players
who you can see are going to track
nicely in the coming seasons.”
Rolleston will face St Thomas’
second XV in pre-season on May 9.
The season begins on May 16, with
Lincoln hosting Roncalli, while Rolleston
have the bye in the opening round.
Their first game is on May 23, away to
Cashmere High School.

Young racing driver on a fast
Emerging racing talent Chris
White is aiming to climb the
motorsport ladder. Reporter
Daniel Alvey finds out what
comes next
When Chris White started
racing karts, he never thought
it would put him on a path
towards driving fast as a career.
The 19-year-old from
Prebbleton won the GR86 Championship
this month and is now
preparing to get behind the
wheel of a GR Supra GT4 EVO2
in Australia – part of the prize
for taking out the title.
White’s introduction to motorsport
came through his father,
also named Chris, who raced as
a hobby and remains a keen fan.
He also had an early connection
to the sport through
Andy Neale, former owner of
the Canterbury Racing School
and a Prebbleton local who
has worked with drivers such
as Earl Bamber and Andre
Heimgartner.
White and Neale’s son, Will,
went to the same preschool
and have been close ever since,
still catching up several times a
week.
Said dad Chris: “The boys
have been hanging out at tracks
since they were old enough to
crawl.”
White began karting at nine
and won the South Island championship
in 2020.
Chris White’s
victory in the GR86
Championship earlier
this month is his latest
step towards a full-time
career as a racing
driver.
“We were just doing it for fun;
nothing really was supposed to
come out of it,” White said.
“Now I’m trying to build a
career out of motorsport.”
His move into cars came
through the Mazda Racing
Series. He finished second in his
debut season and won the title
the following year.
That success was followed
by winning the Tony Quinn
Foundation Scholarship, which
provided $54,000 to support his
racing.
The GR86 series is regarded
as one of the most competitive
one-make categories in New
Zealand, and White was immediately
on the pace.
In his first season, he finished
fifth and was named rookie of
the year.
Last year, he joined Neale

ability to be very fast,
but sometimes he just
pushed a little too much,
and he’s learnt how to
contain that.”

Motorsport and, while not winning
every race, his consistency
was almost unmatched.
“It was just about managing
the lead, because everyone in
the series knows how quickly it
can all fall apart just from a little
mistake or a crash.”
Across the season, his worst
results were ninth and seventh,
with all other finishes inside the
top five.
“It was a pretty strong and
consistent season, which is what
I was working on.”
Neale said White’s development
had been steady.
“He’s matured as well; he’s a
bit more measured in his driving
and understanding how to
put together a run of results that
end up with a good point score,”
he said.
“He’s always had the ability
to be very fast, but sometimes
he just pushed a little too much,
and he’s learnt how to contain
that.”

track to the big time
gained backing from brands
such as Pak’n Save after building
relationships with Papanui
store owner Bryan Walker and
Westgate store owner Lance
Gerlach through the Mazda
series.
“They’ve been a big help along
with other business owners who
race in the Mazda,” White said.
His father said they approach
each step methodically.
“When he won in the Mazda
that was a step, and the next
step after that was the 86s.
White got a taste of the top
level at last weekend’s Supercars
Christchurch 440, where
he worked as the number three
mechanic for reigning champion
Walkinshaw Andretti
United driver Chaz Mostert.
“It was the best weekend of
my life.”
“I thought I was just cleaning
a car, and the next minute they
were handing me rattle guns
and spanners.
He also experienced the emotional
highs and lows of the
sport up close.
Mostert’s teammate Ryan
Wood secured pole position and
a podium but suffered an engine
failure late in the race, ending
his shot at the Jason Richards
Memorial Trophy.
“You could see the disappointment
on everyone’s faces
because of how hard they work.
It was quite sad, but really interesting
to see how they process
all the emotions.”
White won the GR86 Championship earlier this month and spent a weekend working in the Walkinshaw TWG Racing garage
during the Christchurch Super 440.
White’s long-term goal is clear.
“After working with Walkinshaw,
it has made me want to be
a Supercars driver a whole lot
more.”
When he’s not racing,
he works for his father’s
contracting company, operating
diggers.
“I basically work full-time,
and if I’m not there, it’s because
I’m away racing.”
Balancing racing and work
isn’t easy.
“At the start of the year, I was
basically away for three weeks
out of a month.”
White’s next step is racing in
round two of the Monochrome
GT4 Australia series at The Bend
in South Australia from May 8-10.

Sky’s the
limit for June
‘Probably the coolest
great-grandma around’
BY DYLAN SMITS
Most people celebrate their 90th
birthday with family and cake.
June Lee chose something a little
different – a tandem skydive
from 12,000ft over Wānaka.
When she attended the jump
safety briefing, June said a family
asked if she was “just there to
learn”.
"The look on their faces when
I said ‘no, no I’m here to jump
too.’ They were shocked,” she
told Selwyn Times.
June has always loved the sky
and aerial adventures.
She had been reminiscing
about her brief interest in skydiving
many years ago ahead
of her milestone birthday when
she decided to give it another go.
At 18, June was one of the first
women to join the Christchurch
Parachuting Club in 1954 and
did two jumps.
This time around, June hoped
to tandem with a “good-looking
man” and was in luck to have
instructor Niels Bloemendal
guiding her through the jump.
“I was absolutely elated. It was
very exciting, the whole thing,”
she said.
June said the jump went very
smoothly and the weather was
perfect.
“There was just beautiful
scenery and I felt fantastic. The
landing was quite gentle as
well.”
Although she was not nervous,
June said she felt more aware of
the potential danger than when
she was young.
“Back then it was just an exciting
thing to do. I didn’t much
think about any risks.”
The parachuting club in
the 1950s was based out of
Harewood Airport, near June’s
family farm.
“The next thing I want
to do is a helicopter ride
and that will complete
the list.”
June Lee
The difference in safety
standards from 1954 to today
stuck out to June.
“Back then it was in the little
tiger moth (plane) and the pilot
sat in the in the rear cockpit
and I sat on the edge with my
feet out on the wing. I was just
hanging out and holding onto
the struts,” she said.
“I had sort of done my dash
after those two jumps and
satisfied my interest.”
However, trying another
skydive again remained on her
bucket list, so June told her
three sons of the plan.

were a bit taken aback,” said
son Philip Lee.
“But when we understood
the connection to her previous
jumps, we got on board. I think
it’s made her probably the
coolest great-grandma around.
We’re just so proud of her.”
June completed the jump
with Skydive Wānaka in late
January, but she and her
sons kept it a secret from
friends and wider family until
revealing a video at her recent
birthday party.
Lee said everyone at the
party was “very surprised” to
see the footage.
“There were quite a few

gasps of shock when they saw
mum jump out of the plane. It
went over really well and was
exactly what we wanted with
surprising everyone,” Philip
said.
About 70 family and friends
attended the celebration.
From her three sons, she has
seven grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
Although Skydive Wānaka
made sure she was in good
health, June said they were
very excited by her interest in
parachuting.
“I felt very looked after and
they talked me through it
nicely.”
A teacher during her working
life, June has occasionally
embraced opportunities to try
something daring.
From a ride in a glider to hot
air ballooning, she has long
loved sky-based activities and
has now ticked off most of her
bucket list.
“The next thing I want to do
is a helicopter ride and that will
complete the list,” she said.
June would recommend a
parachute jump to older people
keen to try it.
“You certainly have to be
reasonably fit, but go for it. If
you want to do something, go
for it.”
After her 90th birthday parachute jump, June caught up with her tandem instructor Niels Blomendal and her three sons Philip, Christopher, and Robert Lee.

Seasonal tips as first signs of winter appear
Expert advice on what to do for
your garden this week
VEGETABLES
As winter comes closer, the
opportunities for growing vegetables
are reduced, but garlic and
shallots should go in from now
until early spring.
Plant small sections of bulbs,
pushing them down to half their
depth in rich, well-cultivated soil.
Keep an eye on them as growth
starts, checking bulbs to make
sure they have not been pushed
out of the ground by developing
roots. If they have, push them
back in.
This is also a good time to look
at a herb patch.
Thyme is easily propagated
from seed or by dividing mature
plants. Plants are best broken up
and replanted every two to three
years.
Mint, which grows well in sun
or shade, should be planted in a
sunken tin or bucket to prevent it
spreading.
Sage can be increased from
seed, propagated from cuttings
of young growth in December
or by dividing the roots in early
autumn. Cut old plants back to
encourage fresh growth.
Parsley is easily grown from
seed sown in spring or in February.
Fresh seed is important for
a good strike. Encourage plants
with a sprinkling of blood and
bone if growth is slow.
Plant cabbage and cauliflower
now for early-summer harvest.
Choose a warm, well-sheltered
place and plant on raised ridges if
the drainage is poor.
Earth up celery and leeks.
Celery plants will have nearly
finished growing, but leeks will
continue until the first hard frost.
Both plants will make further
growth in spring before going to
seed. If celery does show signs
of forming seed heads (bolting),
dig up the plants, wash and dry
stems, cut into 2cm pieces and
freeze.
Carrots, parsnips, beetroot and
turnips can be lifted now and
the ground dug over to gain the
benefits of weathering. Store the
Rambling roses can be pruned now. Remove all old, flowering wood and tie back
long, new growth (canes) made last summer.
Shallots should go in from now until early spring. Plant small sections of bulbs,
pushing them down to half their depth in rich, well-cultivated soil. Keep an eye on them
as growth starts, checking bulbs to make sure they have not been pushed out of the
ground by developing roots. If they have, push them back in.

vegetables in a heap in a welldrained
part of the garden under
loose soil, or in damp sand in a
cellar or shed.
Parsnips freeze very well - peel
and cut into chunks before freezing
on a tray, then bag up when
frozen.
In districts where severe frosts
are uncommon, root vegetables
may be left in the soil until early
spring, when signs of regrowth
will signal the time to lift and use
the tail end of the crop.
FLOWERS
Rose bushes, if they are showing
signs of old age, should be
dug up and their roots trimmed
before replanting, either in fresh
soil on a new site or in the old
position with plenty of compost,
garden lime and bone dust added.
Protect the small fibrous, feeding
roots while out of the ground
by sitting the bush in water and
do not waste time getting the rose
back into the ground.
The shift is best made when
the soil is fairly dry, to prevent
muddy soil caking to the roots
when replanting.
Some top growth on rose
bushes can be removed now but
wait until August before more
severe pruning.
Rambling roses, however, can
be pruned now. Remove all old,
flowering wood and tie back long,
new growth (canes) made last
summer. Shortening them can
be advantageous, as wood at the
ends which fails to ripen will not
produce flowers.
Flower beds and borders
should be cleared of dead leaves
and foliage, while changes to perennial
beds may still be made, as
long as the soil is not too wet.
Pansies, violas, wallflower
(Cheiranthus) and the Primula
group, including polyanthus and
primroses, can go in now for
spring bedding displays.
Plants that flower in early
summer, including Sweet
William, antirrhinums and Canterbury
bells, can also be planted
now, as can Iceland poppies, scabious
and stock.
Favourite carnations, if layered
earlier in the autumn, will
be ready for planting now in
beds of well-drained soil, free of
excessive organic material.
Carnations respond to dressings
of lime and bone dust.
Crocuses, snowdrops, tulips,
hyacinths and almost all other
spring-flowering bulbs should
all be in by now, but a last-ditch
effort can be made with anemones
and Ranunculus, unless
the soil is heavy and sunshine
limited.
Ranunculus give excellent
results when well-rotted cow
manure is dug into a bed in a
well-drained area. Any bulbs left
in the ground from last season
will be actively growing and
soon showing through the soil.
Place no fresh manure near the
roots of any bulbs and be sparing
with lime.
FRUIT
Strawberries are available
in garden centres now and
should be planted before the soil
becomes too wet for cultivation.
Fresh soil and fresh plantings
are advisable every two or three
years.
Pajaro and the old favourite
Red Gauntlet are reliable choices
for the home garden.
March is a better time for
planting strawberries, so try not
to allow plants put in now to
bear fruit in the coming summer.
Instead, let grow strong and
sturdy for the following two
fruiting seasons.
Apples, pears, plums and
cherry trees can be planted now,
but have the soil in good order
first.
Dig it deeply and remove all
perennial weeds, such as docks,
dandelions and couch grass.
Dressings of rich manure are
unnecessary but fruit cannot be
expected from trees planted in
ill-nourished, barren soil.
Stable manure can be stacked
on heavy soils as a mulch around
the young trees in early summer,
when it will help retain moisture
and be in better condition to
apply to delicate root systems.
Dig a circular space for each
tree, about 1.5m across, and
60cm to 70cm deep.
Put topsoil to one side then
mix some lime and bone dust
into the subsoil, along with a little
garden compost or old, rotted
turf.
Firm, then cover with half
the topsoil, leaving a hole deep
enough to plant the tree.
Have the hole slightly higher
in the centre to help drain heavy
rain away from the stem.
Staking is often necessary so
put one in now, to avoid damaging
the roots once the tree is in.
Root pruning can be a solution
if vigorous tree growth has not
been matched by spring blossom
quantity.
Strawberries are available in garden
centres now and should be planted before
the soil becomes too wet for cultivation.

PETS & PAWS
The Benefits of Adopting a Rescue Pet
Across New Zealand, thousands
of animals are cared for by rescue
organisations and shelters as they wait
for a second chance at a loving home.
Adopting a rescue pet can change the life
of an animal in need, but it can also
be incredibly rewarding for those who
welcome them into their families.
One of the main advantages of
adopting a rescue pet is the chance
to give an animal a new beginning.
Many rescue animals have experienced
difficult circumstances before arriving
at a shelter. They may have been strays,
neglected, abused, or no longer wanted
by their owners. Once they find a caring
home and learn to trust again, they often
form strong bonds with their new owners
and thrive in a stable environment.
Rescue pets can be as well-suited
to family life as animals purchased
from breeders. Shelters and rescue
organisations rescue, rehabilitate, and
rehome animals that have been
abandoned, surrendered, or found as
strays. They provide immediate medical
care and attention, and then often assess
each animal’s personality, behaviour and
needs, helping match them with the right
household and have the animals desexed.
The SPCA states, “We are committed
to reducing the number of unwanted
animals in New Zealand. All animals
rehomed from SPCA Centres are desexed,
unless it is inappropriate for the species/
sex of the animal concerned, or if it is
deemed inappropriate by a veterinarian
for the particular individual (e.g.
for specific health reasons).” By adopting
from a shelter, more space opens up for
another animal that needs help.
Adopting a rescue pet can also be
more affordable. Adoption fees typically
cover essential veterinary care such
as vaccinations, microchipping, and
desexing, which can save new owners
considerable costs.
Within Selwyn and wider Canterbury,
there are many rescue organisations,
including:
• Half Way to Home Kittens
• Kitty Haven
• PUSSN BOOTS KITTY Rescue
• Cat Care
• Cat Rescue Christchurch
• SPCA Canterbury
• Kitty Kingdom
• Cats Protection League
• HUHA (Helping you help animals)
• Dogwatch Sanctuary Trust
• Pound Paws Rescue
• Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue
• Specific dog breed rescues
• Selwyn and Christchurch District
Councils
• Canterbury Tails Animal Rescue
Adopting a pet not only offers a fresh
start for an animal but also brings a new
family member to love and care for. Will
you consider adopting your next furry
friend from a rescue organisation?

MOTORCARE
Former grass kart champion takes the
FIONA ROBINSON
From being the 2025 National Grass
Kart champion to a motorsport event
convenor and primary organiser,
Kyle Robertson has seen action from
both sides of the paddock. He gave up
the chance to defend his title at the
National Grass Karting Championships
in Ashburton over the Easter weekend.
Instead, he took responsibility, along
with his committee, for ensuring the
event, with over 200 competitors, was
a success.
Kyle comes from a passionate
motorsport family and joined the
Ashburton Car Club at the age of 12. He
has been a committee member of the
Ashburton Family Go Kart Club for 16
years and is now the club’s President.
Kyle has been a rally car driver, but
over the last 12 years, because of the
financial costs involved, he began
racing grass karts to stay motivated.
He competed in the NZ Grass Kart
Championships for ten consecutive
years and expressed, “I would always
say I would have a break after 10 in a
row; fortunately, I won after my 10th
attempt”. In 2025, at 29, he became the
National Grass Kart Champion. True
to his word, he did not compete in this
year’s championship.
Kyle races grass karts, primarily
because of the cost. He explains, “The
sport is only as expensive as you
want to make it.” Kyle built his kart
from the ground up, and in his super
kart class, modifications are more
unlimited. His superkart is a heavily
modified 2018 Madcroc Shifter Kart
chassis, powered by a 2018 Honda
CRF450R engine. The maximum engine
size is 500 cc, with most competitors
using 450 cc motocross engines. His
kart, which he had invested money in,
was unfortunately damaged just four
months before the 2025 championship.
Despite having to construct a new kart
on a tight budget, he still managed to
win the championship.
Kyle developed mechanical
knowledge, confirming, “It’s the nature
of bouncing around a paddock, and
things shake loose or break.” He has
also gained mechanical sympathy, the
ability to drive without intentionally
damaging the car, and the judgment to
know when to put in 110%.
Other skills include reaction speed,
fitness, and some muscle strength.
Races are often held in farmers’
paddocks, which are not as smooth as
a “bowling green”. With a heavy load
on your back and neck, safety gear
such as a helmet, neck brace, overalls,
and gloves is required. Kyle also opts
for a rib protector to help protect
against impacts from bumps. Weather
affects track conditions: with rain,
paddocks can get churned up, making
for a mud fest; in dry conditions, it’s
hot and dusty. However, no matter
the challenging conditions, for Kyle,
the thrill is the competitive nature of
racing and his ambition to be the

Grass karting is a sport for the whole
family. The Ashburton Family Go
Kart Club focuses on promoting kids’
racing, with some members as young
as four competing. At the New Zealand
Championships, the minimum age was
five. Kyle suggests it’s a controlled, lowrisk
environment where they can learn
basic control.
The Ashburton Family Go Kart Club’s
regular May event coincides with the
GDC Wheels Week Plus, so take the
chance to check out the sport. Keep an
eye out for Kyle Robertson, who may

A version of the compact
Honda Jazz that marches to a
different beat from its hybridonly
siblings is the Cross Star,
with its pseudo-SUV styling.
It’s the only Jazz sold here
powered purely by petrol,
and it’s considerably more
affordable than the rest of the
range.
The line-up has slimmed
down to three models, two
of which are hybrids priced
from $36,000 for the sporty
RS, with another $2000
securing the more lavishly
appointed Luxe Sport with
leather trim.
Holding the value-formoney
high ground is the
Cross Star ICE (internal
combustion engine),
retailing at $30,700. At a time
when new car budgets are
under pressure, it makes a
compelling case.
Its well-proven 1.5L
i-VTEC DOHC engine, free
of any hybrid assistance, is
something of a rarity today.
For the money, it’s a wellappointed
vehicle built to the
high standards expected of
Honda. You still get features
often reserved for pricier
models, including alloy
wheels, daytime running
lights and fog lamps for
improved visibility in poor
conditions.
It’s a smart move from
Honda to offer such a wellrounded
and affordable entry
point into the Jazz family.
Like many brands, however,
Honda is feeling the squeeze
from a growing wave of
Chinese rivals. A case in
point is the larger MG ZS
Vibe, now upgraded with a
punchy 125kW 1.5-litre turbo
engine, priced from $27,995
and backed by a sevenyear
unlimited kilometre
warranty.
The Cross Star has its own
distinct character. It rides
30mm higher than the rest of
the range and features unique
suspension and steering
tuning, along with bespoke

front and rear bumpers,
body cladding and waterresistant
front seats. All of
this helps it stand out in an
increasingly crowded small
hatch segment.
Outputs of 89kW and
145Nm from the naturally
aspirated 1.5-litre engine are
respectable enough, though
slightly down on the 96kW
produced by the previousgeneration
Jazz.
With peak power and
torque arriving high in the
rev range – at 6600rpm and
4300rpm respectively – lowspeed
throttle response can
feel muted under load or on
longer climbs.
By comparison, the hybrid
Jazz delivers 90kW and a
much stronger 253Nm of
torque, making for a more
effortless driving experience
for those willing to spend the
extra $6000 to $8000.
Around town, the Cross
Star is in its element. It’s easy
and undemanding to drive,
and cruises comfortably
at highway speeds. It runs
happily on 91-octane petrol,
which helps keep running
costs in check.
An electronically controlled
CVT (continuously variable
transmission) handles shifting
duties. It lacks the selectable
drive modes found in the
hybrid models, but performs
its role with consistent
smoothness and contributes
to solid fuel economy.
Inside, the Jazz’s famously
roomy cabin shines again,
enhanced by Honda’s clever
Magic Seats system. These
can fold flat or flip up
depending on your cargo
needs, offering up to 18
different configurations. It’s
a genuinely practical piece of
design.
Slim A-pillars improve allround
visibility and add to
the sense of space, making the
cabin feel larger than you’d
expect from a car of this size.
Technology is centred
around an infotainment
system paired with a
7-inch driver display. The
touchscreen uses a familiar
smartphone-style interface
with swipe functionality,
while Android Auto and
Apple CarPlay provide
seamless connectivity. A
reversing camera delivers
clear imagery for stress-free
parking.
Ease of access is another
strength, both for passengers
and the rear luggage area.
Boot space is an impressive
350 litres, a figure that stacks
up strongly against rivals in
this segment.
Safety is covered by
Honda’s Safety Sense suite,
which includes adaptive
cruise control, lane keep
assist and lane departure
warning.
It’s a comprehensive
package that reinforces
Honda’s commitment to
equipping even its most
affordable models with
strong safety credentials.
While it lacks the sharper
handling of the sportier RS,
the Cross Star’s ride and road
holding are well suited to
its higher-riding, lifestylefocused
brief.
The added height does
introduce a bit more body
lean when pushed harder on
twisty roads, but it remains
composed and enjoyable,
provided you adjust your
driving style accordingly.
Ride quality is supple,
with good bump absorption
around town. However, its
taller, lighter build does
make it more susceptible
to crosswinds at highway
speeds.

Lifestyle with infrastructure
Set on approximately 1.2477 hectares, this wellrounded
lifestyle property offers space, functionality,
and a setup that is becoming harder to find.
The home is well maintained and designed for easy
living, featuring open plan kitchen, dining, and living
at its heart. A sliding door off the lounge opens to the
patio, creating easy indoor-outdoor flow, while the
master bedroom also enjoys direct access outside.
The kitchen is generous and practical, complete with
a double oven and a large corner pantry. A separate
laundry adds further convenience. All four bedrooms
include wardrobes, and the bathroom has been
tastefully renovated. Comfort is well covered with
double glazing, a log burner, heat pump, and heat
transfer system, along with the added convenience of
an attached carport.
Outside is where this property really delivers. The land
is well set up with two paddocks, a large yard area, and
well-maintained gardens, offering space for animals,
storage, or simply room to move.
What really sets this property apart is the range of
outbuildings. Having been subdivided off a larger
farm, it retains an exceptional array of sheds and
infrastructure, including the original shearing shed,
127 Cryers Road, Southbridge
sheep yards, a four-bay shed, a smaller two-bay shed,
and two additional sheds with concrete floors and
sides. A grain silo further adds to the versatility on
offer.
• Please note some partner websites currently show
the rateable valuation for the larger farm, as the
property is still valued as one unit. A separate valuation
for this individual title has not yet been determined.

Taking a smart approach to building
Being organised, aids a smooth build whether engaging a building company
or overseeing the project yourself.
Start by finding a building site. Its
orientation to sun and prevailing winds
should determine your house design so
the sun’s free energy is capitalised on
and you have sunny sheltered spots for
outdoor living.
Choosing your design and building
company may go hand in hand, where
the latter’s consultant works with
you to determine the best plan for your
section, lifestyle and family needs.
Alternatively, you might employ an
architect or architectural draughtsman.
While it may cost a little more for house
plans drawn up for building consent
and maybe lodged by your professional,
it allows you freedom to work with
a smaller builder or oversee your
own project. Ensure all tradespeople
are licensed building practitioners (a
building consent requirement).
Before building starts, determine all
building materials and fixtures (some
will be required to be stated for building
consent). Many housing companies take
their clients through these decisions
before commencing building. Changes
made once building is underway
are likely to incur extra charges and
even budget overruns, especially if
tradespeople return to the job.
If working with a smaller builder, you
may have more time to choose
the kitchen design, kitchen appliances
and paint colours. Working through
these decisions early on however
ensures time to weigh-up options rather
than a rushed choice.
Try making a list of the fixtures and
fittings to be decided on, such as the
type and colour of the exterior cladding,
roof, aluminium joinery, front door
and garage door. List the bathroom
and toilet products required then visit
plumbing suppliers to get ideas for
vanities, bath, showers, taps, bath spout
and the like. If having a walk-in shower,
consider whether you want a glass door
and the number of shower heads. Write
down the brands and product numbers
you like and obtain prices to allow
differentiation between the options.
Meeting your plumber on site is also a
good idea so placement of taps and the
like can be discussed.
Most electricians do a walk-through
with clients to determine where power
points, lights and electronic fittings
will be positioned. Think about how
each room will be used and furniture
might be placed, remembering it is
more affordable to include these while
the house is under construction than
retrofit later. Mark your ideas on a copy
of the plan ahead of time.
Collect paint charts and purchase test
pots of colours you like then paint large
pieces of cardboard to get an idea of
their effect. Visit showhomes too, asking
about their colour schemes.
Planning ahead will help take stress
out of the building process.

Get your
home noticed
It takes more than good photography to help sell a home. You’ll want your
home to look attractive and appealing for a potential home buyer
so check out these following tips to get your home ready for real estate
photography and open homes...
• First impressions count: Clear away
shoes, coats and other items to
make your front entrance look clean
and welcoming.
• Create natural light: Open all
curtains and/or blinds; turn on lights
for open home days.
• Keep it clean: A clean house and
well cared for section will be far
more appealing to a buyer; get rid of
cobwebs; shine the taps; polish the
windows and doorknobs; wash and
vacuum the floors.
• Stay fresh: Don’t allow stale cooking
and living smells to linger – open
windows daily, display a vase of
sweet smelling flowers, and if need be
an occasional spray with a can of air
freshener. Don’t burn incense
as the buyer may wonder what you
are trying to cover up.
• De-clutter every room: This is the
most important. Clean counters,
tables, coffee tables and wall units.
Clutter really attracts the eye
and takes away from the beauty
of the home.
• Kitchen/Dining: Remove all
unnecessary items; keep the benches
clean and clear; remove all used
tea towels and dishcloths; use flowers
to brighten up the dining table.
• Bathroom: We all have clutter in
the bathroom – toothbrushes,
creams, toothpaste etc. Before the
photographer arrives (or potential
buyers) put all the clutter into a
small box, which can easily be stored
out of sight. Place clean colour
co-ordinated towels, neatly folded,
onto the towel rail.
• Bedroom: Use colour coordinated
bedcovers and linen; plump up your
pillows; straighten the valance; put all
clothing and person items out of sight.
• Office: It’s often hard to keep this
room perfectly tidy but try to keep it
as orderly as possible.
• Keep corners free of clutter: This
helps make a room look bigger and
therefore more spacious.
• Make your room look bigger:
rearrange furniture to create more
floor space.
• Add colour: If your house is neutral in
colour, try adding small touches
of colour with fresh flowers. Another
quick color fix is to use cushions
but don’t go overboard. Red works
well against neutral backgrounds
as do bright blues and greens. Just
remember to keep it minimal, pick one
colour per room, and it will work.
• Move toys out of living areas:
Keep them in the rumpus room or
the children’s bedrooms.
• Boxes or small storage units: Stack
them in one area or the spare
bedroom. Better not to take a picture
of the spare bedroom than have boxes
or storage boxes in each room. Better
yet – stack them against one wall and
this way the photographer can avoid
that wall when taking the picture.
• Check your cords, cables and wires:
Tuck and hide those cords away or
simply unplug them.
• Keep pets out of sight: Prospective
buyers don’t want pets leaping
at them or they may be even allergic
to pet hair, so keep them out of
sight or away for photography and
open home days.
• Clean up your section and garage:
Keep lawns mowed, gardens weeded,
hoses and wheelbarrow stored out
of sight; take excess rubbish to the tip;
and arrange your garage to look as
spacious and orderly as possible.

Thinking about
entering the
rental market?
Buying a home to rent out to tenants is a big step and a significant
investment on your part. As a landlord you will want your tenants to love
and care for your property as much as you do.
Renting out your property does not need
to be stressful – if you plan carefully,
renting can be a great opportunity for
both you and your tenant.
Check out these great tips to create
a healthy landlord-tenant relationship
1. Treat your rental property and
tenants in a professional businesslike
manner. Think of your tenants
as your clients, and be prepared to
give them excellent customer service.
Remember they are paying for a
service – they need a home to live in
and you are providing it for them.
2. Prepare the property for
occupancy. Undertake all repairs and
maintenance before the tenant moves
in. Make sure the house is in a clean
and tidy condition; lawns are mowed,
rubbish removed, and that everything
is in full working order.
3. Decide on your expectations.
Before you advertise on the rental
market, decide on things such as
who will maintain the gardens, mow
the lawns, and whether you allow
pets, subletting, etc.
4. Set your fee. Research rental fees
for properties similar to yours in your
area. Base your fees on the current
rental market value along with your
own financial expectations.
5. Inspect the property together. Walk
around the property with your new
tenant before they move in and make
a note of any existing damages or
issues. Give your tenant a copy of the
inspection document.
6. Make sure the tenant can move in
on the first day the rental contract
begins. Once the tenant has signed
the contract and paid their bond
and advanced rent, make sure the
property is available for them to
move into from the first day as per
the contract.
7. Make it easy to communicate.
Avoid miscommunication. Make sure
your tenants know they can contact
you quickly with more than one
option such as a phone number and
an email address. Reply promptly
to your tenants calls or emails to
avoid any mounting frustrations or
misconceptions that you don’t care.
Always make or keep a written copy
of any issues or repair requests and
send the tenant a copy too. This
will show that you have listened and
are prepared to act.
8. Welcome your new tenant to their
new home. If you are not able
to personally welcome your tenants
on the move-in day, you could
leave them a card and flowers.
Show tenants that you not only value
and trust them with the care of
your property but that you are also
looking forward to having them as
your tenants.
For more information about your
obligations as a landlord, check out
the Ready to Rent guide at
www.tenancy.govt.nz.

Winter’s here... clear the
gutters and keep them clean
Before clearing the gutter of any debris,
it’s best to securely block off the tops of
any downpipes with a large rag or old
towel. This prevents any of the collected
sludge being washed down and potential
causing a blocking. Beginning at one
end, carefully scoop out any leaves and
sludge (either with a purpose made
gutter scoop or small plastic trowel)
and deposit the debris in a bucket. Work
your way along the length of each
section of guttering, emptying the bucket
as necessary. Once the guttering is
clear of mess, remove the rag or towel
and sluice the gutter with clean
water, scrubbing (if necessary) with a
stiff-bristled brush.
Once you’re satisfied the inside
of the gutter is clear and clean, use
a preparatory house or paint wash
(diluted with warm water to the
recommended ratio) to carefully scrub
the guttering and downpipes with a
brush, rinsing off any soapy residue with
clean water. For any really stubborn
or unsightly areas of mould, consider
using a preparatory moss and mould
killer. While up the ladder, do a routine
check on the condition of the guttering,
ensuring that water runs away freely
and there are no splits, gaps in the joints
or broken brackets along each section.
Check also along the edge of the roof for
any potential maintenance issues as now
is the time to address any signs of rust or
other damage.
BLOCKED DRAINPIPES
Should the water not flow freely along
the guttering and exit via the downpipe,
it may be there’s a blockage in the
downpipe that will need clearing. Begin
by carefully feeding a garden hose down
the top of the drainpipe until it stops;
then turn it on full. This may be enough
to dislodge the blockage. Failing that,
consider using a length of strong wire or
a thin rod to shift the compacted debris.
For truly stubborn blockages, it may
be necessary to remove the downpipe
completely. Beginning at the bottom
of the pipe, unscrew each bracket and
carefully remove the downpipe (or
each section, as necessary) and free the
inside of any blockage with a piece of
garden stake (or strong bamboo). sluice
the pipe out with running water. In
extreme cases it may be necessary to use
a water blaster. Once unblocked, replace
the pipe, screwing back the brackets in
reverse order.
PREVENTION
Prevention is better than cure so
consider placing plastic netting or
mesh over guttering to act as a filter
and stop leaves and other large debris
causing a problem. There are also a
number of other custom-made gutter
products on the market including
brush-like ‘whiskers’ and other ‘gutter
guards’. Remember, however, that even
with these gutter protectors you’ll still
need to check your guttering system
annually to ensure run-off flows freely.
Small particles of dust and dirt can
still accumulate underneath any gutter
protector causing a build-up of sludge,
and inhibiting water flow, both of which
can lead to potential damage. If in
doubt, seek advice from your building
professional.
TOP TIPS
Instead of blocking downpipes with
a rag or towel, consider installing a
water diverter on each. This purpose
made device is simple to fit and readily
diverts debris from the downpipe by
way of a plastic flap. When not being
used, the flap is clicked the other way,
and water will flow normally through
the pipe and into the drain.
Selling your home?
Potential buyers are likely to be
living in your neighbourhood, it’s
an area that they already love
and are actively seeking to stay
in. That’s why it makes sense to
advertise your property in the
Selwyn Property Guide.
For cost effective, highly targeted advertising
that delivers results, contact a local
Real Estate Company that advertises in
the Selwyn Property Guide.

Budget DIY ideas
that make a
big impact
With the cost of living rising and the
price of just about everything going up,
you might be considering putting off
any DIY plans or renovation projects,
but you don’t need to spend a fortune
to spruce up your home. In fact, you
can make some big changes to your
living spaces without breaking the
bank, so if your home needs a little bit
of TLC or could do with an update, then
read on for some high impact low-cost
renovation ideas.
The power of paint
One of the easiest, and most cost
effective, ways to revive your interiors is
with a fresh coat of paint. But how you
use it is important if you want to make
an impact. Instead of playing safe with
pared back neutrals, consider painting
one feature wall in a deep or warm
tone; paint your interiors in contrasting
colours; update your skirting boards
and windowsills in crisp white; or paint
your kitchen and bathroom cabinetry.
By being selective with where and
what you paint, you’ll not only make a
bold statement but also spend less on
paint than if you were painting a whole
room.
Upgrade your hardware
Another super simple update is to
upgrade your home’s hardware.
For a fresh modern look, kit out your
cabinets with matte black, brushed
brass, or stainless-steel handles; replace
your old tapware in your kitchen
and bathroom; or get some new door
handles for throughout the house.
When it comes to making small
changes that have a big impact, it all
comes down to the details, and by
swapping out hardware you can create
a polished and cohesive look throughout
your home.
Love your lighting
Lighting is more than just functional,
it also shapes how your home feels.
Replace old, dated light fittings and
fixtures with simple modern designs;
add some layers to your lighting with
floor lamps and table lamps; and
invest in some warm-toned bulbs to
make your rooms feel cosier and more
welcoming.
It’s also a good idea to check for any
broken spotlights or burnt-out bulbs in
your cooker hood or other fittings, to
make things feel new again.
Bathroom update on a budget
Small changes can make a big impact
in your bathroom, and make the room
feel cleaner and more modern.
If a full reno is out of the equation,
then consider regrouting your tiles
to make them look new; replace or
reframing your mirrors; updating
your shower curtain or screen; and
replacing your tapware and towel rails.
