The first year behind the wheel is the most dangerous:

Data shows teen drivers 3 times more likely to be in a

fatal crash

The driver’s license photo may be

slightly awkward, but the milestone

is unforgettable. For families, a newly

licensed teen means independence

and busy schedules — and a new set

of responsibilities.

Motor vehicle crashes remain one

of the leading causes of death for

U.S. teens, according to the Centers

for Disease Control and Prevention

(CDC). Data from the National Highway

Traffic Safety Administration

shows drivers aged 16-19 are nearly

three times more likely to be involved

in a fatal crash than drivers 20 and

older, per mile driven.

The statistics are serious, but they

‘re also manageable.

“With the right preparation, teen

driving doesn’t have to feel overwhelming,”

said Susan Irace, manager,

divisional claims at Mercury Insurance.

“Experience is what young

drivers are building. Parents can

help shorten that learning curve with

structure, technology and smart coverage

decisions.”

Why the first year matters

Federal safety data shows crash

risk is highest in a teen’s first year of

independent driving. Night driving,

teen passengers and distracted driving

increase that risk — while seat

belts, graduated licensing laws and

supervised practice significantly reduce

it.

In 2023, more than 2,800 teens

aged 13-19 were killed in motor vehicle

crashes nationwide, according to

the CDC. However, teen crash rates

have declined over time thanks to

safer vehicles, graduated driver licensing

programs and greater awareness

of distracted driving.

Ways to reduce teen driving risk

The experts at Mercury Insurance

encourage families to focus on preparation

rather than panic.

1. Coach early and often.

• Log supervised driving time in

different conditions (highways, rain,

nighttime).

• Create a simple written driving

agreement outlining expectations.

• Limit teen passengers during the

first year.

• Make seatbelts non-negotiable.

2. Let technology help.

• Choose vehicles with safety features

like automatic emergency braking

and blind-spot monitoring.

• Use telematics or safe-driving feedback

tools to reinforce good habits.

• Activate smartphone “Do Not Disturb

While Driving” settings.

• Add teens to your insurance policy

promptly,

• Revisit liability limits to protect

family assets.

• Ask about good student and driver

Traveling to Mexico this year? Here’s what

to know about current advisories

For some travelers counting down to vacation, headlines about violence in parts

of Mexico have sparked a new question: Should I cancel my trip? Travel advisors say

they are seeing a surge in calls and emails from clients trying to determine whether

developments in one region affect major resort areas elsewhere.

The questions were spurred by several days of unrest in parts of Mexico after security

operations targeting organized crime leaders prompted temporary flight disruptions

and shelter-in-place guidance for U.S. government personnel in areas including

Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. In this article, ALG Vacations explains what current

travel advisories mean for travelers heading to Mexico.

The U.S. State Department evaluates Mexico state by state, not as a single destination,

and advisory levels vary by region; visit travel.state.gov for current information.

Many major beach destinations, including Cancun, Riviera Maya, Tulum

and Los Cabos, are currently under a Level 2 advisory, which encourages travelers to

exercise increased caution.

This does not discourage travel.

Part of the confusion stems from geography. Puerto Vallarta, on the Pacific coast, is

roughly 1,300 miles from Cancun and the Riviera Maya on the Caribbean side; that’s

about the distance between New York and Miami. Because advisories are assigned

state by state, developments in one region do not automatically alter another.

Some travel clients are asking about alternatives, advisors say, but many are continuing

with their plans after reviewing official updates. Travel patterns often shift

in response to breaking headlines, they add, before stabilizing as clearer information

becomes available.

The State Department assigns travel advisories on a four-tier scale ranging from

Level 1 (exercise normal precautions) to Level 4 (do not travel). While Level 2 encourages

increased awareness, Level 3 and Level 4 carry stronger language discouraging

or restricting travel.

Advisories are reviewed regularly and can be updated as conditions evolve. The

State Department’s Mexico advisory page breaks down conditions by state, reflecting

the country’s federal structure rather than issuing a single national designation.

Travelers can also enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program,

which provides real-time security updates and allows U.S. officials to contact

citizens in an emergency.

Embassy notices state that airports, hotels and tourism services in Quintana Roo

are operating normally. Security conditions across Mexico vary widely by state, with

some regions carrying higher advisories and others designated Level 1. Most destinations

popular with U.S. travelers are currently classified as Level 2.

As vacation season approaches, advisors say informed decision-making depends

on reviewing the advisories assigned to a specific destination and monitoring official

updates, rather than reacting to national headlines alone. Travel decisions ultimately

depend on individual comfort levels, they add, but advisory levels are assigned regionally

and should be evaluated accordingly.

Tajin Clásico Seasoning

2 slices fresh jalapeño

1 ounce fresh lime juice

2 ounces blanco tequila

1 ounce orange liqueur

1/2 ounce agave syrup

Ice

Lime wedge and jalapeño slice, for garnish

To rim glass, brush Tajin Chile Lime

Sauce on side of glass; then dip into Tajin

Clásico Seasoning to coat. Set aside.

In a cocktail shaker, muddle jalapeño

slices with lime juice to release the pepper’s

heat and flavor.

Add tequila, orange liqueur and agave

syrup to shaker. Fill with ice and shake vigorously

for 10-15 seconds.

Fill prepared glass with ice and strain

margarita into glass. Garnish with lime

wedge and jalapeño slice.
