Everyone around me seems to be doing big spring

cleaning and getting super organized. Meanwhile, I

keep making “junk drawers” that multiply like rabbits.

How do I get motivated to declutter without getting

overwhelmed?

– Buried in Stuff in Lisbon

Dear Buried in Stuff,

First, let me assure you that as a professional collector

of very important treasures (tennis balls, mystery socks,

sticks shaped like other sticks), I am highly qualified to

help. Here is my foolproof system for decluttering:

Step 1: Start with a nap.

Big projects require big energy. Whenever I feel overwhelmed,

I lie down dramatically and recharge. You call it

procrastinating. I call it strategic power restoration.

Step 2: Use the “Sniff Test.”

When I clean my toy basket, I ask myself: Do I love this?

Does this bring me joy? Is this secretly a snack?

If the answer is no, it can probably go.

Step 3: Tiny piles, not giant mountains.

Humans get overwhelmed when they try to clean the

whole house. That’s like trying to chase all the squirrels

at once. Impossible. Pick one drawer. One shelf. One tiny

victory. Then celebrate like you just won Best in Show.

Step 4: Reward system is CRITICAL. After every small

success, reward yourself. Personally, I recommend treats,

praise, and telling everyone what a good job you did. This

step is non-negotiable.

Remember: Decluttering isn’t about getting rid of everything.

It’s about making room for naps, snacks, and the

things you love most. Cozy beats perfect every time.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I must go reorganize my blanket

pile by fluffiness.

It's funny, when I walk into a spider web I demolish his home and misplace his dinner

yet I still feel like the victim.

I went to a job interview

this week. The

interviewer said to

me that I had put on

my CV that I was

very quick at mental

arithmetic.

"What's nineteen multiplied

by seventeen?"

he asked. Quick as a

flash I replied,

"Thirty-four."

"That's wrong," he

said."But it was very

quick," I pointed out.
