Business Finance Company of the Month

Building the UK’s go-to

finance partner for SMEs

In this issue of Business & Industry Today, we

are pleased to feature Moorgate Finance as

our Business Finance Company of the Month

Founded in 2014 by Tom

Roberts and his wife Amy

Roberts, Moorgate Finance was

born from a desire to do things

differently within the financial

brokerage space. Drawing

on his experience working in

established brokerages, Tom

recognised an opportunity to

create a more agile, customerfocused

business that could

better serve the evolving needs

of UK companies. Taking on

the challenge himself, he and

Amy built a firm centred on

expertise, relationships, and

bespoke financial support.

Headquartered in Towcester,

the company has recently expanded its footprint

with the opening of a second office in Cambridge in

March 2026. This growth reflects both increasing

demand for its services and its ambition to

strengthen its presence across key UK business

hubs.

At its core, Moorgate

Finance operates as

a financial brokerage,

acting as a trusted

intermediary between UK

business owners and a

wide network of lenders

and financial service

providers. Its offering

spans a comprehensive

range of products,

including business loans,

asset finance, insurance,

protection, invoice finance, mortgages, and tax

funding. By positioning itself as a ‘middle expert’,

the firm simplifies what can often be a complex

and time-consuming process, ensuring clients are

matched with solutions that genuinely meet their

needs.

Within the industry, Moorgate Finance has

established a strong reputation. As winners of Asset

and Leasing Finance Broker of the Year in 2025,

and ranked as the 6th largest firm in the Asset

Finance Connect listings, this highlights both its

scale and growing influence in the sector. However,

the company’s success is not solely defined by size,

but by its approach.

A key differentiator is its ‘one-stop shop’ model.

Clients can return to Moorgate for multiple financial

needs over time, confident in receiving consistent,

high-quality service. The firm also works closely with

a network of trusted third-party

partners, enabling it to offer

a broader and more flexible

range of options than many

competitors.

Primarily serving UK SMEs,

Moorgate Finance is focused

on supporting business owners

at every stage of their journey.

Its guiding philosophy – to be

‘The Finance Partner in the

UK’ – captures this ambition.

Rather than providing one-off

transactions, the company aims

to build lasting relationships,

positioning itself as a long-term

partner capable of supporting

businesses through growth,

change, and new opportunities.

In partnership with Readhunt Insurance, Moorgate

Finance has recently introduced a variety of

Business Insurance products. Designed to help UK

SMEs protect every aspect of their operations, from

physical assets to people and long-term financial

stability, these services

focus on creating tailored,

sector-specific insurance

solutions rather than onesize-fits-all

policies.

Acting as a broker,

Moorgate works closely

with both ‘Readhunt

Insurance’ and clients to

assess their individual

risks and match them with

suitable cover from a wide

panel of insurers. This ensures businesses are

neither under-insured nor paying for unnecessary

protection – an increasingly important consideration

as companies grow, evolve, and face new risks.

The service spans a wide range of insurance types,

covering key areas such as commercial property,

motor fleet, liability, professional indemnity, and

cyber insurance. It also includes more specialised

cover, such as construction and engineering

policies, reflecting the firm’s strong presence

in sectors like construction, manufacturing,

and logistics. Each policy is structured around

the specific needs of the business, whether

that involves protecting high-value equipment,

safeguarding against legal claims, or minimising

disruption from cyber incidents.

A key strength of Moorgate’s approach is its ability

to integrate insurance into a wider financial strategy.

Rather than treating insurance as a standalone

requirement, the company positions it as a critical

component of business resilience – helping

to protect cash flow, maintain operations after

unexpected events, and build confidence among

lenders and stakeholders.

This recent partnership echoes how far the

company has come over the last 24 months.

Reflecting on this growth, Charly Pritchard, Head

of Marketing Communications, commented, “Our

company saw growth of 52% in last financial year,

and headcount growth of nearly 40%. We opened

our Cambridge office which marked our second

premises, and we are also expanding our HQ

premises in the summer of this year.”

As Moorgate Finance continues to grow, its ambition

to be recognised as ‘The Finance Partner’ in the

UK is clearly more than just a tagline – it is a

strategic direction shaping every aspect of the

business. By combining a broad product offering

with a relationship-led approach, the company is

positioning itself as a consistent, reliable presence

in an often-complex financial landscape. Its ability

to evolve alongside clients, anticipate their needs,

and deliver tailored solutions reinforces this longterm

vision.

Growth in scale, service lines, and geographic

reach all point towards a business that is not only

expanding, but maturing in its role as a trusted

advisor. As SMEs increasingly seek partners rather

than providers, Moorgate Finance’s integrated,

client-first model ensures it is well placed to meet

that demand – building enduring partnerships that

extend far beyond individual transactions and firmly

establishing its place within the industry.

The P & M Group recently announced

the acquisition of Bradford-based

HBCL Coldstores, marking a significant

strengthening of the company’s

presence in the North of England.

The acquisition of HBCL is part of

continued and rapid growth at the

cold chain solutions specialist P & M,

whose major constituent part is cold

store expert ISD Solutions.

Group turnover has increased

significantly from £58 million in

2024/25 to £88 million in 2025/26.

This upward trajectory is expected

to continue as the group executes

its long-term expansion strategy,

mixing organic growth with strategic

acquisitions.

The UK cold chain sector is

experiencing robust growth, with

the logistics market valued at

approximately £11.5 billion and

projected to grow rapidly in coming

years.

Growth is driven by increased

e-commerce demand, pharmaceutical

logistics and food sector requirements,

with the market shifting toward

automated, sustainable, and energyefficient

facilities.

HBCL has been in business for almost

25 years, owned and managed by

husband and wife Craig and Caroline

Lovett. Their relationship with P & M

managing director Tony Wall, combined

with shared values and reputations,

led to the agreement.

Until now operating predominantly

in the retail sector, HBCL will retain

its branding presence and its 27

staff, while offering the considerable

expertise, resources, customer base

and supplier network that P & M has

to offer.

Craig Lovett will remain with the

business continuing in his role of

managing director.

Castrol has introduced a complete

commercial vehicle (CV) fluids solution,

structured into three clearly defined tiers

– Ultimate, Enhanced, and Essential

– to simplify product selection and

support fleet performance.

Developed around real-world operating

conditions, the Castrol CV portfolio

combines engine oils, transmission

fluids, coolants, greases, and ancillary

products into one aligned system.

The tiered approach helps operators

reduce complexity, match performance

to application, and maintain uptime

across mixed fleets.

At the core is Castrol VECTON,

formulated with System Pro Technology

to manage higher engine stresses,

control oxidation, reduce deposits, and

maintain viscosity for longer oil life.

Mark Adkins, Managing Director, Kernow

Oils Ltd, said, “As Castrol’s Official

Partner, we’re proud to spearhead

the launch of this new complete fleet

solution that simplifies product selection

while helping customers streamline

maintenance, control costs, and improve

Redefining vehicle hire

in a flexible world

Vehicle Hire Company of the Month

In this issue of Business & Industry Today,

we are pleased to feature Day’s Rental as

our Vehicle Hire Company of the Month

provider with the responsiveness of a regional,

family-led company.

In an increasingly flexible and fast-paced world,

mobility has become less about ownership and

more about access. Positioned at the forefront of

this shift is Day’s Rental, a company that blends

nearly a century of heritage with a modern,

customer-first approach to vehicle hire.

Today, Day’s Rental offers one of the most

comprehensive vehicle hire solutions in the

UK. With a fleet exceeding 10,000 vehicles, the

company provides everything from compact cars

and vans to minibuses, 4x4s, motorhomes, and

specialist commercial vehicles. This breadth of

offering allows the business to cater to a diverse

customer base, from individual short-term hires

to complex corporate and fleet requirements.

Equally important is the company’s service

ethos. Day’s Rental places strong emphasis

on delivering a seamless, end-to-end customer

experience – from initial consultation through

to vehicle delivery, support, and return. This

‘cradle-to-grave’ service approach ensures that

each solution is tailored, whether that involves

specialist vehicle requirements, branding, or

additional features such as GPS, CCTV and other

ancillaries.

Operating across 14 multiple locations

throughout Wales and England, the business

continues to expand its footprint while

maintaining a local, personalised approach. This

balance between scale and service is a defining

feature –

combining

the

resources of

a large fleet

As the automotive industry continues to evolve

– particularly with the rise of electric and hybrid

vehicles – Day’s Rental remains aligned with

innovation and sustainability trends. Its growing

fleet reflects changing customer expectations,

ensuring access to more environmentally

conscious transport solutions.

Ultimately, Day’s Rental represents more

than just vehicle hire. It is a business built on

heritage, strengthened by scale, and driven by

a clear commitment to customer needs. In a

sector defined by convenience and reliability,

it continues to demonstrate that long-standing

values and modern mobility can work hand in

hand.

Pharmaceuticals

Five-year data of AGAMREE ®

in patients with DMD show

improved safety profile

Santhera Pharmaceuticals recently

reported positive topline results from

an analysis of long-term data, including

first assessments from the ongoing,

open-label, multicentre GUARDIAN study

evaluating AGAMREE ® (vamorolone)

in patients with Duchenne muscular

dystrophy (DMD).

The long-term analysis included

corticosteroid-naïve patients who began

AGAMREE treatment between four and

seven years of age in clinical studies and

continued

through

various

access

programs,

including the

GUARDIAN

study. Data

from up to 110 patients were analysed,

with patient numbers varying by analysis

depending on data availability. In this

long-term analysis, patients had received

AGAMREE for up to eight years, with a

median follow-up of about five years.

Most patients remained on higher doses

(4-6mg/kg/day) in real-world clinical

settings over the observation period.

Patients treated with AGAMREE

maintained motor function over

extended follow-up, demonstrating

durable efficacy as measured by time

to loss of ambulation comparable

to standard of care corticosteroids

(p=0.91). In pre-specified subgroup

analyses, no differences were observed

compared with either daily deflazacort or

prednisone.

Importantly, the data continue to support

a differentiated safety and tolerability

profile versus traditional corticosteroids.

Patients treated with AGAMREE

experienced a significantly lower rate

of vertebral

fractures

(p=0.0061),

maintained

normal

growth

without the

stunting seen

with standard of care corticosteroids

(p<0.0001), and showed fewer cases

of cataracts than those treated with

glucocorticoids, including a notably

lower incidence versus deflazacort

(p<0.015). Additionally, to date, no cases

of glaucoma were observed. On average,

changes in BMI or weight, when matched

for height, did not differ, and no new

safety signals were observed.

Revolutionising franchise

parcel shipping

Franchise Parcel Shipping Company of the Month

In this issue of Business and Industry Today we

have featured Speedy Parcels as our Franchise

Parcel Shipping Company of the Month

Speedy Parcels is a multi-carrier shipping

solutions company that is changing the

landscape of franchise shipping in the UK. Its

people-led offering is backed by the latest tech

and is providing businesses of all sizes with

the most efficient and flexible parcel delivery

solutions as an all-in-one delivery partner.

Initially offered as a service

addition within the incredibly

successful logistics company

Speedy Freight, Speedy

Parcels has been a concept

since May 2023. The

current owners of Speedy

Freight, Mike Smith and

John Munnelly, developed

the parcel offering for the

well-known franchise and

gained enough momentum for Speedy Parcels to

be incorporated in 2025, bringing this franchise

offering to the market as a standalone parcel

business.

From its headquarters and centre of training

excellence in Knutsford, Cheshire, Speedy

Parcels has rapidly expanded to 12 trading

territories in the last year, and since September

the company has welcomed franchisees across

Liverpool, Warrington, Manchester, Cheshire,

Crewe and Reading, along with three territories

in Glasgow.

Central to the success of Speedy Parcels, is

its tech-enabled, multi-carrier business model.

The company has curated access to most of

the major UK parcel carriers at aggregated

preferential rates, allowing franchise owners to

access those companies through one central

portal.

This technology allows customers to pull in

their order information from multiple different

marketplaces, including Amazon, eBay, Tik

Tok shop and allows smaller retailers, without

the immediate cashflow to support a full WMS

system, to generate orders at a much quicker

pace.

This software links to all the major carriers, but

the company’s network of franchisees are the

key deciding factor in its implementation. These

franchisees look for businesses in their local area

who would benefit from the streamline aggregate

solution and Speedy Parcels gives franchisees

the opportunity to act as consultants to these

businesses, guiding them to the right solution

based on price point, speed and service.

“Our strength and USP is that we are local.” says

Sales Director Peter Board, “The franchisees

own an exclusive territory, so they are focussed

on speaking to people in their local area,

understanding that area, and then getting them

the right fit for their business.”

This locality is a key

differentiator for

Speedy Parcels and

offers a personalised

service to meet the

rising frustration of

automated customer

service processes.

End-users have a

dedicated customer

service representative through franchise owners

who know them by name and understand their

business intimately.

Speedy Parcels’ excellent training system

designed specifically for franchise owners also

sets it apart. New franchisees benefit from a

two week intensive training course from expert

leaders in the business, with an additional

three to twelve week launch and accelerate

programme, which focuses on building skills as a

parcel sales consultant.

The company has been developed over three

years under the auspices of the well-established

franchise operator Speedy Freight. This means

the training and support provided has been

market proven and, as a sister company to

Speedy Parcels, the two businesses share

resources, expertise and insights.

For Peter, this combination of tech, people

and solid market foundation offers an exciting

proposition for potential franchisees, “It’s the

opportunity to get into something very early on

that’s growing fast and to secure a territory while

there’s still good territory available,” he explains.

“That is the exciting part of our entry into the

market, we are offering an exclusive territory

where you own the postcodes and you really

build that to become your own Speedy Parcels

empire.”

This exclusivity is unique in the market and

it gives franchisees an additional layer of

protection, as well as scalability. The initial

investment for franchisee owners is also

much lower too, at around £30,000, meaning

franchises can run on an owner-operator model

which give franchisees freedom to grow, as well

as a compound recurring income.

After the company’s rapid expansion in 2025

the future looks bright for Speedy Parcels. Over

the next 12 months the company has ambition

to take another 20-30 franchisees on and scale

across the UK. It also has immediate plans to

offer locker box functionality to meet the growing

demand for this solution from various sectors

and further develop the core product offering for

new markets further afield.

Speedy Parcels are not just another delivery

service. Its combination of people-first service,

with the latest technology provides reliable,

flexible and cost-effective parcel delivery

solutions. With backing from its large sister

company, Speedy Parcels is building a reputation

for commitment to its franchisees and this

dedication is creating opportunities that are

redefining the shipping sector and elevating the

market as a whole.

Digital Agency of the Year

From clicks to customers: A

In this issue of Business & Industry Today, we are pleased

to feature Netdesignr as our Digital Agency of the Year

diagnostic tool, helping businesses identify and

fix conversion gaps. We also exhibited at The

Business Show London, where we connected with

over 80 businesses, and we were honoured to

be named Company of the Month by Business &

Industry Today in January 2026.

Many small and medium-sized businesses

approach digital transformation by investing in

quick fixes, often overlooking the foundations that

enable lasting growth. Netdesignr takes a different

view and instead focuses on building strong

digital ecosystems that convert visitors into loyal

customers, a philosophy embedded in every client

partnership.

Founded in 2016 by Mihai Diaconita, Netdesignr’s

story began years earlier. In 2008, Mihai

started freelancing as a graphic designer from

his mother’s apartment in Romania under the

name ‘Netdesignr’, laying the groundwork for a

business driven by creativity and problem-solving.

After relocating to the UK in 2010, he identified

widespread gaps in how businesses approached

their online presence. Soon after, co-founder

Madalina joined, leading administration and

business development.

Today, with offices in London and Dubai and a

global remote team, Netdesignr helps businesses

strengthen their digital foundations, turning growth

into a measurable, sustainable outcome.

We sat down with Mihai to discuss how the last

12 months have been for

the company and how sales

have fared in comparison to

forecast, “The past 12 months

have been transformative for

Netdesignr. We’ve evolved from

a creative digital agency into

a growth-focused business,

taking a 360-degree view of

our clients to understand the

real challenges and respond

with strategic, measurable

solutions. By developing our

own internal tools, we’re now

able to support clients endto-end,

from building strong

digital foundations with highperforming

websites through

to ongoing optimisation, SEO,

and PPC.

“Three milestones defined the

year. We launched NetPulse,

our AI-powered website

“Behind the scenes, we strengthened our

operations, introducing documented SOPs across

delivery and aligning the team around clear SMART

goals, supported by ongoing coaching to maintain

high standards as we scale.

“What stands out most is that clients are choosing

to grow with us. Many who initially came for a

website redesign are now investing in ongoing

optimisation, SEO, and PPC. This year has

validated our core belief: fix the gaps to unlock

growth. SMEs don’t just want services. They

want clarity, accountability, transparency, and

measurable results, and that’s exactly what we’ve

focused on delivering.

“We’ve had a great year, with sales performing

better than expected. Growth came from a healthy

mix of channels rather than any single source.

“Referrals and existing clients remained our largest

driver, reflecting the kind of long-term partnerships

we focus on building. NetPulse opened a new

inbound channel, attracting businesses that had

already identified gaps and were ready to act. Our

presence at The Business Show London generated

warm leads that continued into 2026.

“What’s been most encouraging isn’t just the

number of sales, but their quality. More clients are

choosing ongoing partnerships rather than one-off

projects, and engagements

are lasting longer. We’ve also

started gaining traction outside

the UK, with our Dubai entity

bringing in new opportunities

and opening up a second

market.

“Overall, we’re going into 2026

with a healthier, more balanced

pipeline, a broader client base,

and more confidence in our

growth.”

Over the past year, there has

been several key developments

across product, team, and

geography that have enabled

Netdesignr to grow. On the

product side, NetPulse, their

AI-powered website diagnostic

tool, continues to evolve with

the goal being to test and

diagnose 100,000 websites by

the end of 2026, targeting local businesses as well

as larger industries such as fintech.

From a team perspective, the company has grown

in capability through continuous learning, ensuring

they deliver at consistently high standards. They

have also built an internal client portal, giving

clients full visibility of every stage of their project.

This reflects a commitment to transparency, one of

the values that defines how Netdesignr work.

Geographically, the company’s Dubai-based entity,

Netdesignr Consulting DWC-LLC, has moved from

setup into active delivery, now serving clients

beyond the UK and building momentum as a

strengthened their presence in specific sectors,

particularly the relocation industry, where they

expand their footprint within fintech and education.

NetPulse, our AI-powered website diagnostic tool,

and our proudest achievement this year.

“Most SMEs invest heavily in driving traffic, through

ads, SEO, and social, without fully understanding

why their website isn’t converting. NetPulse

addresses that gap. Users can simply paste their

URL and, in under five minutes, receive a clear,

smarter digital strategy

actionable report covering trust signals, messaging

clarity, value proposition strength, navigation, AI

search readiness, and key conversion barriers.

It’s designed as a quick and accessible first step,

helping businesses understand their current

position before investing further in ads, SEO, or

PPC. Try it at netdesignr.com/diagnose

“It effectively gives businesses access to the kind

of analysis agencies often charge thousands for.

Internally, it has also transformed how we engage

with clients. Our conversations now begin with data

and insight, rather than a sales pitch.

“Crucially, our responsible use of AI across tools

and processes has allowed us to identify issues

significantly faster and streamline delivery.

Overall, our timelines have reduced by 50%. As

an example, a full website redesign focused on

conversion, which previously took around six

months, can now be delivered in half the time,

without compromising on quality.

“Beyond NetPulse, there are two additional areas

worth noting.

“First, our AI search

visibility service

responds to a major

shift in how people

discover businesses,

as more buyers

turn to AI tools for

recommendations

before traditional search

engines.

“Second, our full endto-end

service. From

research, brand design,

and messaging, through to website development,

and into ongoing optimisation via SEO, PPC, and

maintenance. We support businesses at every

stage of their growth journey. Together, these

services reflect our guiding philosophy: fill the

gaps, unlock digital growth.”

But what benefits do these products and services

deliver to the client? Clients gain a long-term

growth partner, not just a supplier. Some of

Netdesignr’s relationships go back over 15 years,

but more tellingly, the majority of their clients have

stayed with them through the last three years, a

period that has reshaped digital faster than the

previous decade combined. They stayed because

Netdesignr has stayed ahead of the curve.

As AI search, privacy changes, and new buyer

behaviours have shifted the landscape, Netdesignr

has continued to adapt, helping clients move

with it rather than fall behind. SMEs increasingly

want one team delivering end-to-end, reducing

cost, complexity, and delays, and Netdesignr has

listened to this.

Mihai explains further, “Clients also benefit from a

research-led approach. Every decision is grounded

in user behaviour, competitor insight, and real

data. This removes guesswork and ensures what

we build is designed to perform, not just look good.

“Transparency is built into how we work. Through

our internal client portal, clients can see the exact

stage of their project at every step, giving them full

visibility rather than waiting for status updates. It’s

a small but deliberate difference, one that removes

the anxiety most clients feel when working with an

agency.

“We focus on what matters most, revenue.

Rather than producing activity reports, we track

the signals that drive it, website performance,

campaign results, and enquiry volume. Clients

can clearly see the impact of their investment,

whether that’s stronger brand recognition, a highperforming

website, or campaigns that generate

enquiries and sales.

“As the founder and CEO, I bring another layer to

every client engagement. Clients work directly with

me on strategy, drawing on 17 years of industry

experience across sectors such as education,

fintech, removals, and

hospitality. That depth

of pattern recognition

helps clients avoid

common pitfalls and

make sharper decisions.

In-house tools like

NetPulse strengthen this

further, giving clients

immediate clarity on

where their website is

underperforming before

they commit.

“Lastly, we go beyond

the traditional agency role. We partner with clients

long term, bringing together strategic direction and

execution in one place. This allows businesses to

access leadership-level digital expertise without

the overhead of building an in-house team.”

In the immediate future, Netdesignr has two clear

priorities. Firstly, to continue scaling NetPulse

where the next phase

will introduce deeper

technical diagnostics,

multi-page analysis,

and competitor

benchmarking. “Our

goal is for NetPulse to

become the default

starting point for any

SME serious about

improving their digital

performance,” adds

Mihai.

Secondly, Netdesignr

will focus on completing

their UAE expansion,

growing their Dubai

client base and strengthening delivery for clients

across the Middle East.

Longer term, Netdesignr’s direction is clear, to

become the go-to diagnostic and growth partner

for SMEs across both the UK and UAE. A key part

of that is developing NetPulse into a standalone

platform, available directly to SMEs and through

white-label options for other agencies.

“We’re also exploring adjacent AI-powered

solutions where smaller businesses currently lack

affordable options, such as automated customer

response systems. Underlying all of this is a

principle we’ve followed for the past 10 years: fix

the foundations first, then scale. It’s a model that

continues to deliver results for both us and our

clients, and it will remain central to how we grow,”

adds Mihai.

In closing, we asked Mihai how he felt receiving the

award, “When my wife, Madalina, and I founded

Netdesignr in 2016, we never set out with the goal

of being publicly recognised. We built the business

steadily and quietly. At the same time, our son was

born, and in many ways the business was growing

alongside our family. It started with one client at a

time, no team, and very little noise. Over the years,

we’ve gradually evolved, from a small web design

agency into a growth-focused digital business.

“Being named Digital Agency of the Year, especially

in the same year we celebrated 10 years of

Netdesignr, is a milestone that carries real weight

for us. It reflects the consistency, resilience, and

continuous learning

that’s gone into the

business, as well as

our focus on finding

solutions that genuinely

help SMEs succeed

online.

“This recognition feels

less like a finish line and

more like a reminder

that we’re on the right

path, and that there’s

still much more to build.”

Forestry

National Forest reaches

10 million trees

Forestry and woodland

restoration

The National Forest has reached the

landmark milestone of planting ten

million trees, marking thirty years of

transforming the industrial heartland

of England into one of the most

ambitious and successful regeneration

stories in the country.

Spanning 200 square miles

across Derbyshire, Leicestershire

and Staffordshire, the Forest has

transformed one of the least wooded

parts of England from a scarred postindustrial

landscape of coal mines and

clay pits into a thriving, productive and

accessible forest landscape.

To mark the milestone, presenters

John Craven & Charlotte Smith planted

a commemorative oak during a special

BBC Countryfile visit to the Forest.

Since the early 1990s, forest cover

across the area has increased from

just 6% to more than 25%, creating a

model for how long-term investment

in trees can deliver environmental,

social and economic transformation,

and helping to inspire the future of

woodland creation across England.

Led by the National Forest charity,

and made possible through

sustained government support and

the commitment of landowners,

businesses, communities and

partners, the Forest’s transformation

is delivering measurable benefits at

every level.

For nature, woodland bird populations

have risen by 48% against a national

decline of 7%, while species once lost

from the area have returned, including

the purple emperor butterfly, recorded

locally for the first time in nearly 200

years, and dormice, reintroduced after

more than a century of absence.

Monitoring continues to show

increasing diversity among birds, bats,

amphibians and insects, supported by

larger and better-connected habitats.

Rhizocore Technologies, a biotechnology

company which uses fungi to improve

tree growth and survival rates, has

secured £4.5 million in investment to

scale its innovative approach to forestry

and woodland restoration.

The company is based within the UK

Agri-Tech Centre’s Northern Innovation

Hub in Roslin, just outside Edinburgh,

and specialises in the production of

locally-adapted mycorrhizal fungi to

support woodland regeneration and tree

planting success.

The funding round was led by The

First Thirty, a specialist investor in

technologies to improve soil health.

The round also includes participation

from Scottish Enterprise, as well as

from existing customer The Grosvenor

Estate, one of the UK’s largest

landowners. Additional investors in the

round are Sand River, Generation-Re

(Regenerative Agriculture Syndicate),

Kibo Invest, John Thomson, and

Old College Capital, the University

of Edinburgh’s in-house venture

investment fund.

The technology works by providing

saplings with specific Ectomycorrhizal

(ECM) fungi. Drawing on one of the

world’s largest living fungal libraries,

Rhizocore selects the precise, highperformance

species for a given

site. These fungi form a symbiotic

network with the roots, helping trees

absorb more nutrients and water.

This is especially important in the

vulnerable early stages of a tree’s life,

underpinning survival, resilience and

growth to deliver financial returns on

forest assets.

The investment responds to

overwhelming market validation for

Rhizocore’s technology. The investment

will allow the company to increase

supply to meet future demand with

existing customers already having

purchased 100% of planned 2025/26

capacity. Plantings using RhizoPellets

across numerous sites and involving

major industry partners have delivered

unprecedented results.

International Franchise Show London Review

Highlights from an incredible weekend in

franchising | International Franchise Show 2026

What a weekend. Thank you to everyone who stepped

into it with us this year, whether you were a guest,

exhibited with us, or one of our valued partners or

sponsors. Across the globe, the franchise landscape

is shifting with striking momentum and confidence,

redefining what is possible. The energy on the show

floor captured that story better than anything else...

Franchise sectors have never been broader

One of the most notable aspects of the weekend was

the breadth of opportunity on display. The traditional

view of franchising as being limited to a small number

of sectors no longer holds true. Our visitors had the

chance to explore everything from health and wellness

concepts to property services, childcare, hospitality,

and a growing number of tech-enabled models.

This range reflects a much broader shift in the

market. Franchising is becoming more accessible

and adaptable, offering routes that can better match

individual skills, interests, and lifestyle goals. For many

of our visitors, they weren’t just browsing businesses;

they were encountering options that could align with

their skills, their values, even the rhythm of their daily

lives.

That alignment is powerful. It’s drawing in a more

diverse, discerning audience, people who may never

have seen themselves in franchising before, but are

now beginning to recognise a place for themselves

within it.

Stand creativity set the tone

One thing we saw was our brands arriving with

clear intent and creativity! Stands were thoughtfully

designed, visually striking, and created to invite

interaction rather than just observation. We saw full

brand activations that encouraged visitors to step

in and take part, while mascots moved through the

aisles, naturally drawing attention and opening up

conversations...

Some exhibitors even brought in holograms and digital

displays that presented their concepts in a way that

felt modern and forward looking. Others focused on

live demonstrations and hands-on experiences, which

equally drew in highly engaged crowds and kept them!

From our

perspective, the

show floor felt

alive throughout.

We watched

people gather,

engage, ask

questions, and

spend more time at stands. That energy created the

right conditions for more meaningful conversations,

which is exactly where franchising decisions begin.

A new generation of brands

Alongside the established names, we saw a clear rise

in newer brands stepping confidently into the market.

These emerging concepts feel distinctly of the moment,

shaped around a more modern consumer who expects

digital fluency, strong storytelling, and flexibility in how

a business shows up and operates.

What stood out was how intentional these brands are

in their build. They are not just entering franchising,

they are reimagining it, with models that feel agile,

brand-led, and designed to move with shifting

behaviours rather than resist them.

For the industry, this signals real momentum.

Franchising is not fixed in form or tradition. It continues

to evolve, absorbing fresh thinking and adapting across

sectors like fitness, food, education, home services,

and technology-led businesses, all while widening what

the model can look like in practice.

households is a welcome step

toward strengthening the UK’s industrial

and engineering landscape.

New technologies like robotics,

AI, and IoT enhancing operations

are resulting in improved safety,

quality, and productivity. Yet,

according to Make UK, there are

currently 55,000 unfilled long-term

vacancies in the UK manufacturing

sector. To secure Britain’s place as a

leading industrial nation, organisations

must attract tech-savvy and sustainabilityminded

people, Gen Z and Gen Alpha included,

into its workforce via both graduate schemes and

apprenticeship programmes.

The Prime Minister’s new ambition, that two-thirds

of young people should go either to university or

take on a gold standard apprenticeship aims to

change the way we think about education, affording

apprenticeships the level of aspiration we believe

they have always deserved. At Schneider Electric,

we recognise that addressing the skills gap requires

more than financial support. That is why we have

Hillhead to implement ISO sustainability standard

● Encouraging the use of refillable water bottles

on-site by providing free access to chilled and

filtered water, saving the equivalent of 16,000

bottles at Hillhead 2024

● Promoting a car sharing scheme to reduce the

number of journeys to and from the site

● Working closely with the contractors to ensure

they are delivering more sustainable solutions

for the exhibitors and visitors

The event organisers take their environmental

responsibilities seriously. They continually review

their operational impact in order to reduce

their carbon footprint and make the event more

sustainable.

In recent years this has included among other

measures:

● Removing all single use plastic from site since

2022

● Transitioning from diesel to HVO to power

all the site structures, including the 2 large

exhibitor pavilions

● Re-using or recycling all the interior show

graphics and carpets, giving them a second

life

● Using solar powered generators for lighting

towers, security cameras and other

functionality

● Increasing the scope and volume of the

implementing British Standard ISO 20121:2024

which is a framework that has been developed to

‘enable sustainability to be considered at every

decision point during the planning and delivery

of an event’.

The standard allows organisations to show first

party conformity through self-declaration by:

engaging with stakeholders, collaborating with

the supply chain, creating policies and action

plans and regularly communicating and reviewing

progress. Through implementing this standard,

the organisers aim to establish a way of working

and a culture where sustainability is considered

at every decision point.

The UK’s leading quarrying and construction

equipment show is already ahead of its 2024

trajectory with Hillhead 2026 set to surpass 600

exhibitors.

Event Director, Richard Bradbury, explains,

“We are delighted to have all the major OEMs

confirmed for the show, and we are seeing

that momentum spread across all areas of the

showground as the appetite for both indoor and

outdoor space continues to build.”

Hillhead 2026 takes place from 23-25 June at

Pumps & Valves

Energy efficiency success

At the recent EEMODS (Energy

Efficiency in Motor Driven Systems)

conference in Lucerne, Switzerland,

Europump President Luboš Michlík

delivered a compelling presentation

on the achievements of the

European pump sector in driving

energy savings through the adoption

of the Extended Product Approach

(EPA). This landmark strategy has

played a pivotal role in advancing

energy efficiency across

Europe’s industrial and

commercial pumping

systems.

During his

address, Michlik

emphasised

the importance

of the pump

sector in Europe’s

overall energysaving

efforts and

outlined how the

Extended Product Approach

has led to significant reductions in

energy consumption across various

industries. He noted that pumps,

which account for a substantial

portion of energy use in industrial

applications, offer enormous

potential for efficiency gains when

viewed holistically as part of a

broader system rather than in

isolation.

“The Extended Product Approach

has revolutionised how we view and

optimise energy efficiency within the

pump sector,” said Luboš Michlik.

“Rather than focusing solely on

individual pump performance, we

now evaluate the entire system,

including motors, drives, and control

systems. This holistic view allows us

to achieve far greater energy savings

and system efficiency.”

The EPA methodology,

developed and

championed by

Europump, shifts

the focus from

individual pump

components to

the performance

of the entire

pumping system.

By assessing how

all elements – pumps,

motors, drives, and

controls – interact, the EPA

enables more precise and impactful

energy-saving opportunities. This

shift in approach has already led

to significant improvements across

Europe, helping companies reduce

operational costs while contributing

to the EU’s energy and sustainability

goals.
