Program Notes
The Volcano Awakens is a grade 0.5 band composition intended for developing bands. The marcato articulations
capture the intensity of a volcano, and the low melodies throughout the piece represent the low, rumbling sounds of
the beginnings of a volcanic eruption. Perfect for young performers, this piece encourages students to explore
dynamics and articulation while bringing to life the thrilling visions of a volcano.
Performance Notes
There are many percussion parts for a grade 0.5 selection, but I wanted to write a piece with several percussion
parts to ensure percussionists in larger programs have something to do. The timpani part is optional, since I
understand timpani are not accessible for all beginning band programs. Percussion IV, High Tom and Low Tom,
double the timpani part. The percussion IV part is not necessarily a substitute for timpani but can be if you do not
have timpani. If you do not have two separate toms but you own a drum set, you can use a floor tom and the mid
tom. The Mallet part is intended for glockenspiel/bells but can be doubled or replaced with any mallet instrument
for educational purposes or inventory availability.
All parts only utilize the first six notes of the concert Bb scale. The piece is in C Minor. There are no concert B
naturals throughout the piece, so no need to worry about your trombones hitting 7 th position.

wonderful performance!
