‘This is just appalling’
BY BARRY CLARKE AND
DANIEL ALVEY
That is the view of many in
the community after another
children’s playground was hit
by taggers.
“The free Palestine and
LGBTQ stuff is the sort of thing
you might get on government
type buildings or at a protest
– not a children’s playground.
This is simply unbelievable,”
an angry resident told Selwyn
Times.
Said another: “This is just
appalling.”
The graffiti at Lincoln’s Te
Whariki playground on the
corner of Vernon and Southfield
Dr happened overnight
on Saturday. A council spokesperson
said the graffiti was
going to be cleaned off “as
soon as possible”.
It was the second attack on a
Lincoln playground in recent
weeks.
The children’s playground
in Leinster Tce near the intersection
of James, Gerald and
Edward Sts was tagged with
bright orange paint. A penis
was drawn on the adjacent
road and also on a tree at a
nearby picnic area. A picnic
bench was also tagged.
One person, whose children
go to the Te Whariki playground,
questioned what the
police were doing to find who
was responsible.

Sharp rise
forecast
for future
water bills
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Households could be paying
more than double their current
water bill within 10 years.
Council-owned company
Selwyn Water Ltd has opened
public consultation on its Water
Services Strategy, which runs
until June 1.
The strategy outlines planned
spending and projected average
household costs.
For the 2026/27 financial year,
the average household water
bill is expected to rise by about
$280, from $1552 to $1831 – an
18% increase, down from an
earlier forecast of 24%.
However, the company’s
longer-term projections show
bills could reach about $3402 by
2036.
The charge includes water
and wastewater connection
fees, which will shift from
council rates to Selwyn Water
bills.
Households will also continue
to pay for their individual
water use, with the unit price
increasing to about $1.48/m 3 , up
from $1.25/m 3.
The $1831 figure is based on
the average household use of
257m 3 of water a year.

‘If you can’t see pull over’
BY DANIEL ALVEY
A fire chief says a spate of
serious crashes is a stark
reminder of how dangerous
sunstrike can be to motorists.
The Rolleston Volunteer
Fire Brigade has attended
six crashes over the past two
weeks, where people had to be
cut out of vehicles. Fire chief
Marty Tier said sunstrike was a
possible factor in all of them.
"Most of the calls we’re getting
are from sunstrike and
pulling out in front of people
and not seeing
them,” he said.
Tier said the
crashes happened
between 7.15-
8.30am when the
rising sun was
low in the sky.
A crash at the
intersection of
Jones and Curraghs
Rds at
Marty Tier
7.20am on Thursday left one
person critically injured. The
week before, a van driver was
seriously injured after hitting a
truck on State Highway 73 near
the intersection with Kirk Rd.
Tier said icy, dirty or fogged
up windscreens can make sunstrike
worse.
He also reminded his own
brigade members about the
risks of driving with a frozen or
foggy windscreen.
From 2021-2025, sunstrike
was deemed likely to have
played a part in 15 fatal crashes
across New Zealand, nearly
100 crashes that caused serious
injuries and 500 minor injury
crashes.
Automobile Association
Canterbury and West Coast
chair John Skevington had a
simple message for motorists.
“If you can’t see pull over.”
Skevington said you may need
to stop for five or 10 minutes
to allow the sun to rise or set
enough for it to become safe to
drive again.
"Most bosses would prefer
you turn up in one piece and a
few minutes late.”
The six crashes
over the last
fortnight all
took place in the
lead up to Road
Safety Week,
which started on
Monday.
Mayor Lydia
Gliddon is
supporting a
region‐wide Road
John
Skevington
Safety Week campaign with
a clear message: Every crash
impacts more than just the
numbers.
Last year 261 people were
killed or seriously injured on
Canterbury roads.
In the Road Safety Week
campaign video, Gliddon said:
“It breaks your heart when you
think that’s someone's mother,
daughter, father, brother or
your child. And it's the flow on
effect of that.
“Our health services,
our volunteers, our fire
brigades, they're all affected by
this when they see this trauma.
So put the phone down and pay
attention.”
In brief
Dog locks itself in car
The Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade
was called to a rural property near
Motukarara on Sunday morning
after Frankie the french bulldog
hit the lock button on the car keys
in the centre console. Station
officer Ollie Rutland-Sims said
Frankie was stuck inside the car
for about 30 minutes before the
crew arrived. The dog was freed
using a lock picking kit carried by
the brigade.
Air conditioning leak
behind fire brigade call-out
A leaking air conditioner at
the DairyNZ office on Millpond
Lane in Lincoln was the cause
of a suspected gas leak. The
building was evacuated on Friday
afternoon. The brigade was at the
scene for about four hours and
called in a hazardous material
crew from Christchurch as a
precaution.
Over-50s village planned
Freedom Group has applied for
resource consent to develop 200
to 230 housing units on 8.3ha
of the Earlsbrook subdivision in
Lincoln. The village will be for
over-50s, including those still in
the workforce. It would include
one to three-bedroom units
with full kitchens and garages,
plus shared amenities, such as
a cinema, exercise areas and
pickleball courts. Construction of
the village is planned to start in
September next year, with the first
residents due to move in by about
March 2028.

Four decades on the front
Dave Berry was always destined
to be involved in the emergency
services. Daniel Alvey talks to
the 40-year Fire Service veteran
who retired on Friday
It was about 2am on November
20, 2010.
Just over 10 hours earlier,
there had been an explosion
2.3km into the Pike River
coal mine 45km north-east of
Greymouth. Two miners got out
at 5.51pm, but 29 others were
unaccounted for. They would all
perish.
Police were controlling the
rescue operation and had given
an order: No-one was to enter
the mine due to the possible
risk of another explosion or
collapse.
Berry, the Christchurch City
Fire Station senior station
officer had been helicoptered to
the West Coast after the 3.44pm
explosion to help manage the
Fire Service response.
When specialised Delsar
listening equipment arrived
sometime after midnight, Berry,
an urban search and rescue
technician (USAR) and a fellow
firefighter, made the decision to
act, despite the police order, and
enter the mine to install it.
The high-tech equipment
is used to detect and locate
trapped live victims.
It is designed to pick up
any sound or vibration by
Dave Berry was part of a three-person team that entered the Pike River coal mine to install listening equipment in the hours
after the explosion.

transforming from what it is
attached to pick up noises made
by survivors.
Said Berry: “The Delsar stuff
arrived, so we thought we
might as well put it to use.
“They were letting nobody in,
but we thought we had to get in
there and see if there was any
noise.”
"It was a highly
calculated risk. We had
an escape plan, it was
just to run like hell.”
Dave Berry
The trio carried the equipment
from the emergency services base
to the entrance of the mine, which
was in darkness.
Berry said they did not take
breathing apparatus.
“It was a spur-of-the-moment
thing.”
Berry and the USAR technician
ran into the mine; how far,
they were not sure but it could
have been about 200m, carrying
torches, spending no more than
five minutes inside.
It was the furthest they felt safe
going into the mine.
It was about 2km from where
the explosion happened. They
attached the listening equipment
to a pipe that went deep into the
mine.
“We just ran down there, put it
on, and ran back.”
Where they went was still “reasonably
intact.” The conveyor
which carts material out of the
mine was undamaged. There was
no smell of gas.
But they were still very much in
the unknown.
“It was a highly calculated risk.
We had an escape plan, it was just
to run like hell,” he said, if anything
unexpected happened.
Listening device installed, they
exited as quickly as they could,
staying outside the mine entrance
until sunrise to listen for any sign
the 29 miners may have still been
alive.

line of emergency response
“We were looking for any sign
of life, like tapping on a wall, but
we could only hear the water
running,” said Berry.
Four days later a second
explosion ripped through the
mine, with two further explosions
in the following days, leading
to the mine being sealed with
a concrete wall 170m from the
entrance.
USAR area commander Steve
Barclay found out later on the
morning of November 20 about
the listening device mission. But
he did not raise it with the trio.
“I’m not sure if the police or the
mine company ever found out,”
said Berry.
Placing the listening device
inside the mine “reassured” them
they had done
what they could to
locate the miners.
“It gave us
that feeling of
if we can’t hear
anything, we have
done our best
to try and listen
and see what’s
happening.”
Alf Berry
Berry was
probably always destined to
become part of the emergency
services.
Sneaking into the back of his
dad’s police car was an early
sign he, too, would serve the
community.
“I was either going to be a
firefighter or a policeman,” Berry
said.
Berry was part of the team that rescued one of the last survivors from the collapsed
CTV building after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. He also served as a USAR
tasking officer at the Latimer Square base.
Growing up in Burnham, from
about age 12 he accompanied his
father Alf – the settlement’s sole
police officer – on ride-alongs.
Alf initially used his own vehicle
before being issued a Holden
Kingswood patrol car.
On one occasion, while driving
his personal car, Alf arrested an
escaped prisoner.
“We were going along Main
South Rd, and he was just
walking along in a prisoner
outfit, and dad jumped out and
grabbed him.”
But the emergency services
were not Berry’s first calling.
His first job out of school was
a shop hand at Para Rubber in
High St, where he moved up to
become an assistant manager.
It was followed by a job in the
hardware department of Farmers
Trading Company, Riccarton,
where he became the store’s
assistant manager, and after
that an assistant manager at its
Colombo St store.
He was then transferred by
FTC to its Matamata store to be
the manager – at the age of 23.
It was there an opportunity
arose to fulfil his boyhood dream
for the emergency services.
The Matamata Volunteer Fire
Brigade was looking for volunteers,
so Berry signed up.
Six months later, he became
a paid firefighter in Tauranga,
leaving his retail career behind.
Three years later, in 1988, he
transferred to Christchurch City
Fire Station.
He worked his way up the
ladder to senior station officer
in the mid 1990s. He was also a
training officer and a key person
in instructing crews how to
use new command unit vehicles
across New Zealand when they
were introduced in 2010.
It was also the year Berry
first took an interest in urban
search and rescue, which at the
time was still in its infancy in
New Zealand, training as one of
the first hazmat officers in the
country for USAR.
A hazmat officer’s role is to
assist with chemical incidents
and provide specialist advice to
responding crews.
When the 2011 6.3 magnitude
earthquake hit, Berry was at
home in Prebbleton, where
he then lived. He now lives in
Lincoln.
He was deployed to the
collapsed CTV building as a
hazmat officer, but quickly
deviated into a rescue role.

A career ‘full of adventure and good friendships’
› From Page 5
The building accounted for
115 of the 185 fatalities from the
earthquake.
“The team I was in rescued
about eight people,” he said.
Among those saved by
Berry’s team was one of the
last survivors pulled from
the rubble, 19-year-old Kento
Okuda, a student at King’s
Education English language
school.
To get access to Okuda, Berry
and his team had to dig down
through several metres of
rubble and concrete.
When they found Okuda
sometime after midnight, he
was pinned down by a concrete
pillar.
“It was quite smoky, so we
gave him an oxygen mask,”
Berry said.
But Okuda initially tried
to return it to rescuers, who
were not wearing masks. They
insisted he keep it.
To free him, his right leg had
to be amputated – a decision
Berry, another firefighter and a
paramedic had no choice but to
make.
“The leg was not going to be
saved, and it was the only way
we could do it.”
Surgeons were brought in to
carry out the amputation.
Berry stayed at the CTV
building until the early hours
of the morning before being
relieved by another crew.
He spent about 20 more days
running USAR’s base in Latimer
Square as a tasking officer.
Berry has been an area commander for Fire and Emergency NZ since 2012. Right: Berry
served as a USAR hazmat officer folling the 2011 Fukushima earthquake.
“My role was to delegate jobs
to each of them and make sure
it was all completed.”
The following month, Berry
was part of a USAR team called
to Fukushima in Japan to help
with the aftermath of the
9.1 earthquake and tsunami,
estimated to have killed 29,000
people.
The team was part of the
global response to the disaster.
He again served as a hazmat
officer, monitoring radiation
levels and assisting with
decontamination efforts after
the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear
Power Plant meltdown.
“We had to do radiation
checks all the time. We did
do some decontamination of
people who were caught in it.”
Berry and his team were
camped out in a baseball
stadium about 40km up the
coast from the plant.
“It was an eye-opener with
the amount of destruction.”
He was amazed at the
resilience of the Japanese
people, recalling seeing them
sitting around playing cards
amongst the rubble.
For Berry, while the big fires
and disasters “take the glory,” it
is the personal calls which are
the toughest.
“I’ve gone to three medical
incidents where colleagues
have passed away, so they’re
pretty tough.”
Berry became Canterbury
area commander in 2012. Since
2017, he has been responsible
for Selwyn, supporting 13
volunteer brigades and acting
as incident commander on
larger callouts.
His retirement follows a
prostate cancer diagnosis in
2024.
The cancer was caught early,
and he has undergone surgery
and radiation treatment.
“We’ve come through all
that and got the clearance, and
basically just on the monitoring
stage now,” he said.
The cancer caught him “by
surprise”.
“I just started losing a wee
bit of weight and just did some
tests and found it,” he said.
Specialists linked the cancer
to carcinogenic substances
like toxic gases, liquids, and
particles he was exposed to as a
firefighter.
Berry says working on the
Fukushima and Christchurch
earthquakes could have been a
factor and in the early days of
his firefighting career the safety
equipment was not like it is
today.
Retirement will bring more
golf and trips to Australia to
watch three racehorses he owns
as part of a syndicate.
It will also allow Berry and
his partner, Sharron Comber, to
spend more time with their four
grandchildren.
Asked to reflect on his 40 year
career in the fire service, Berry
is typically understated.
“It has been one full of adventure
and good friendships.”
And, he adds, he “would do it
all again”.

Consultation open
for water strategy
› From Page 1
Said Selwyn Water board chair Murray
Strong: “While investment is needed,
we’re encouraged that further analysis
has reduced the impact on customers in
the short-term. We will continue to look
for efficiencies as Selwyn Water builds
capability and matures.”
Selwyn Water chief executive Alex
Cabrera said the forecast pricing remains
indicative and will be reviewed alongside
the council’s next Long-Term Plan.
“We recognise the projected
increases are significant, and
affordability is a key consideration
as we balance infrastructure
investment needs with the impacts
on households and businesses,” he
said.
The strategy says increases
are needed to meet regulatory
requirements, maintain and
improve service reliability, and
support growth across the district.
The initial document focuses on the
first 12 months, allowing Selwyn Water
to establish strong foundations and align
future planning with the council’s 2027–
2037 Long-Term Plan.
Said Strong: “Although this strategy is
forward-looking, it is not a 10-year plan
that locks in every decision.
Murray Strong
“It’s a practical first step that gives a clear
picture of where we’re starting from and
the direction we need to head in.”
Cabrera said submissions will be made
publicly available, but the organisation will
not hold hearings for verbal presentations.
“The Selwyn Water Ltd board is
responsible for approving the final water
services strategy. This decision will be
informed by input from our shareholder
(council) and feedback received through
the community engagement process.”
In 2026/27, the company plans to
spend $15.758 million on upgrades
to the water network to keep up
with growth and $24.194m on
growth projects for the wastewater
network.
The strategy states: “In several
cases, actual development demand
is exceeding the assumptions used
in earlier infrastructure models,
creating a material gap between
existing capital budgets and the
investment now required to maintain
levels of service.
“In water and wastewater reticulation
networks, growth has created the need
for accelerated and expanded upgrades,
including new pump stations, reticulation
and storage to manage increasing peak
demands and improve resilience.”

CORDE has started rolling out autonomous mowers in the district.
Smarter way to trim the turf
Do not be surprised if you spot a selfdriving,
ride-on mower cutting the grass
in a park.
CORDE is one of the first contractors
in New Zealand to roll out autonomous
mowing technology, bringing a high-tech
edge to grass cutting.
The council-owned contractor
estimates the mowers will deliver
up to 65% in time savings, with two
units able to be overseen by a single
technician.
While the machines do the mowing,
the operator can focus on more detailed
work such as edging and spraying.
To set up the system, the mower first
completes a guided lap of the perimeter.
A fitted seat allows the operator to ride
along and map out the area it needs to cut.
CORDE chief executive Mathew
Havill said the new mower reflects the
organisation’s focus on innovation.
“This is about doing things better.
For our people, our clients, and the
communities we serve. Autonomous
mowing is a practical step forward
that improves safety, lifts efficiency,
and positions us for the future of our
industry,” he said.
The mower’s trailer has solar panels
to charge other tools it carries for
gardening work.

Be a Road
Safety Hero
Selwyn District Council Road Safety Team
Road safety coordinators across Canterbury have joined forces
to deliver a region-wide campaign for Road Safety Week 2026.
Running from 4–10 May, this year’s campaign shines a light on
both fatalities and serious injuries, reinforcing the message that
every crash has a ripple effect across families and communities.
“By coming together as a Canterbury road safety collective with
New Zealand Police, Fire and Emergency New Zealand, Hato
Hone St John and other frontline responders, we’re showing just
how many people are impacted by serious crashes,” Canterbury
Road Safety Coordinators’ spokesperson Lucy Mehrtens says.
In 2025, 261 people were killed or seriously injured on
Canterbury roads. While fatalities often dominate headlines,
serious injury crashes can have equally devastating, lifelong
consequences.
“This year, we’ve made a deliberate effort to highlight serious
injuries, because their impact extends far beyond the
individual. Effects on mobility, mental health and employment
can significantly affect financial stability and family wellbeing.”
Ahead of the campaign, all nine Canterbury mayors came
together in February to take part in filming that captured
their reactions to seeing the region’s total number of deaths
and serious injuries for the first time.
While each mayor was familiar with statistics from their own
district, all were struck by the scale of the regional total and
what it represents.
Filming also captured a message from each mayor, to be shared
across their districts during Road Safety Week – a national
remembrance week coordinated by road safety charity
Brake, encouraging communities to lead the charge in making
sure everyone gets home safely.
You can view the film at Facebook.com/SelwynDistrictCouncil

*Serious injury definition: injuries such as fractures, concussion,
severe cuts or other harm requiring medical treatment or
hospitalisation.
Hundreds have say
on council spending
BY DANIEL ALVEY
The community has shown strong
interest in how the council plans to
spend ratepayer money.
A total of 944 submissions were
received on the 2026/27 Annual Plan –
the document outlining council spending
from July 1.
It was the highest level of
engagement ever seen for an
Annual Plan in Selwyn.
Mayor Lydia Gliddon said the
response was encouraging.
“That level of engagement is
healthy and exactly why meaningful
consultation matters,” she
said.
“The feedback I’m hearing most
often is about affordability, value
for money, and making sure council
focuses on essential services. People also
want clearer explanations about why
decisions are being made.”
The council sought feedback on three
weighted average rates increase options
of 6.5%, 5.4% and 4.9% for 2026/27.
The high number of submissions
means 99 people will be heard over two
days of hearings, with each submitter
Lydia Gliddon
allocated five minutes to speak and a
further five minutes for councillors’
questions.
Rolleston Residents Association chair
Mark Alexander called the time allowed
to speak a “sham”.
“Council is giving lip service to the
consultation process,” he said in an
email to Gliddon.
“(The council) is having the
kind of hearings you have when
you don’t want to have hearings.
“You were elected to listen to
and represent us. This process is
neither listening to or representing
us.”
Gliddon defended the format.
“Councillors will have already
read every written submission,
so the hearing is not the first
time people’s views are being seen. The
speaking time is there to highlight key
points and give councillors an opportunity
to ask questions.
“With around 90 to 100 people wanting
to speak, we need to balance fairness
with allowing everyone to be heard.”
The hearings will be held on May 14
and 15 and livestreamed on the council’s
YouTube page.

“Look, we know it’s tough and they
can’t be everywhere. But it would be
good to know if they have an idea who
these a**holes are, and if they are young
enough, are they (police) talking to the
parents.
“Our kids are young and they didn’t
take in the meaning and messaging
of the tagging here (Te
Whariki). It’s just a mess. Really
disappointing.”
Police were unable to say before
Selwyn Times deadline on Monday
afternoon if they were investigating
the tagging.
Last week, police said there had
been no rise in reports of incidents
to them in Lincoln, despite concerned
residents telling Selwyn
Times of ongoing issues with young
teenagers knocking on doors at night
as a prank, vandalism and antisocial
behaviour.
Denise Carrick
Springs Ward councillor Denise Carrick
who is also the spokesperson for Selwyn
Community Patrol said the graffiti was
“sad”.
“It lowers the standards of the town,”
she said.
When the patrol sees graffiti it sends
photos to the council’s send, snap and
resolve system.
“We cover the whole of Lincoln,
Prebbleton and Leeston, so the
chances of being somewhere when
something’s happening are quite
slim,” Carrick said.
She plans to “advocate” as a
councillor for more security cameras
in public spaces like parks and
playgrounds to deter vandalism.
Another Springs Ward councillor
Aaron McGlinchy said the Te
Whariki graffiti was “despicable”.
He is also supportive of security
cameras in public spaces, but wanted to
see evidence of how big the issue was to
see if installing them was cost effective.

RSA planning new war
memorial as town grows
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Rolleston RSA is making a bid for a war
memorial in the town centre.
In recent years, the town’s Anzac Day
service has shifted away from the Rolleston
Memorial Clock due to growing
attendance and the cost of traffic management.
It is now held behind Te Ara
Ātea – but the area has no dedicated war
memorial.
RSA vice president Bev Robinson said
the group has developed a concept and
is now working through building costs.
“We don’t have one there currently,
and we think for a town our size, we
really need one,” she said.
The RSA plans to approach the council
for a site behind Te Ara Ātea once costings
are finalised.
The concept design includes two
soldiers etched into concrete, along
with a panel of poppies and another
acknowledging local iwi.
Robinson said the memorial would be
designed to be relocatable, allowing it
to be moved as Rolleston continues to
grow.

Soldiers ‘disrespected’ by extra
Anzac Day holiday – deputy mayor
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Deputy mayor Brendan Shefford
has labelled the Mondayisation
of Anzac Day as “woke”.
This year marked the fourth
time the Monday following
Anzac Day has been observed
as a public holiday since rules
changed in 2014 to provide an
additional day off when it falls
on a weekend.
The former soldier, now a
real estate agent, took to social
media on April 27 to express his
opposition to the extra day off.
“The Mondayisation of ANZAC
day is due to the woke ideology
of the MPs who passed it into
legislation,” he said.
“The ANZACs would be
turning in their graves if
they knew this rubbish was
happening. They never gave up
their lives for their day to be
disrespected by the government
and rubbish like this to
happen.”
Rolleston RSA president Mark
Richards said he did not believe
the extra day diminished the
meaning of Anzac Day.
“I do not think it belittles
Anzac Day because you are still
focused on the day.”
In comments responding
to Shefford’s post, there were
mixed reactions.
Deputy mayor Brendan Shefford at Lincoln’s Anzac Day service. Right, Prebbleton’s
well-attended commemoration.
“Personally, I don’t see it as
woke at all. Many people still
have to work on ANZAC Day –
the Monday gives a lot of them
a chance to have the day off and
give their own respect to those
who went before us,” Steve
Collins commented.
Said Doug Francis: “As a vet,
I think that day has been given
an excuse to soften the meaning
and it will, over time, be just
another day off! Leave it as it’s
meant to be.”

Should Anzac Day be Mondayised?
Send your views in 200 words or less
to daniel.alvey@alliedmedia.co.nz
Said Alex Fletcher: “I prefer
having a consistent number
of days off per year. Before
the legislation changed, we
were defrauded one stat day,
potentially two, depending on
whether Anzac and Waitangi
Day fell on a weekend.
“Dawn services are always
observed on Anzac Day itself,
and our national day of
remembrance has never been
diminished.”
Said Nicky Lewis: “For once
I totally agree with you in
addition to the valid points
above, it’s also the financial
impact on the private sector.”
On Anzac Day, Shefford was
the guest speaker at Lincoln’s
service.
He joined the army after
high school and was based at
Waiouru and later Burnham.
While serving, he trained
as a cook and completed
deployments in Suai, East
Timor, in 2001 and Bamyan
province, Afghanistan, in 2005.
Shefford told Selwyn Times
the public holiday is intended to
allow people to attend services,
and an additional day off is
unnecessary.
Shefford is no stranger to
controversy, having run on the
Donald Trump-esque slogan
“Make Selwyn great again”
during last year’s election
campaign.
“To be fair, I’m in line with
him around the no woke
bulls**t, getting rid of the red
tape, look after the locals first
– that’s basically what I stand
for,” Shefford said at the time.
He said the extra day off also
adds costs for businesses, which
must either close or pay staff
time-and-a-half and provide a
day in lieu.
Retired, but not slowing down
Liz retired last November. She
hates that word.
“It sounds like you’re winding
down,” she says. “I’m not winding
down. I’m just doing different
things.”
At 71, her weeks are fuller than
they were when she was working.
Pickleball three times a week.
Bachata dancing. Looking after
relatives. Coffee with friends
who’ve known her for decades.
Her former colleagues joke that
she seems busier now than she ever
was at work.
“I found it frightening at first,”
she admits. “Not knowing what I
was going to do with my time. But
now I’ve got more interests than
hours.”
The only thing that needed
sorting was her sleep.
Liz has always been a night
owl. Her husband is asleep by ten,
but she’s still up at midnight, and
sometimes later. It’s just how she’s
wired, and she’s made peace
with that.
But as she got older, the sleep
she did get wasn’t giving her what
she needed. She’d wake during the
night and lie there, mind ticking
over. The hours she managed
felt thin, like they weren’t quite
reaching her. She’d get up in the
morning feeling like she hadn’t
really rested at all.
“I tried other things,” she says.
“But I just didn’t like them. You’d
feel drowsy the next day and I gave
them away.”
That groggy feeling was worse
than the tiredness. She wanted
something that worked with her
body, not something that left her
sluggish and foggy.
Then she saw an ad in the
newspaper for Koru Sleep. She
wasn’t expecting miracles, but she
was curious enough to try.
“It didn’t work straight away,”
Liz says. “But of course, it does
take time. You’ve got to give these
things a chance.”
She stuck with it, letting her
body adjust. After a few weeks,
something shifted. She was falling
back asleep more easily when she
woke during the night. The hours
started to feel like actual rest.
“The beauty of it is, having to go
to the bathroom during the night,
I can fall straight back to sleep
without even thinking about it.”
That was five years ago. She’s
been taking Koru Sleep ever since.
“You’ve got to listen to your own
body,” she says. “Give it time to
work. That’s what I did.”
Liz still doesn’t sleep eight
hours. She never has. But the four
or five hours she gets now actually
feel like sleep.
“Even though I only get four to
five hours, I still feel as if I’ve been
asleep,” she says. “I wake up fresh
and I’m good.”
Fresh enough for pickleball.
Always read the label and take as directed. If symptoms persist contact your healthcare professional. Koru Nutrition, Christchurch
Advertisement
Fresh enough for dancing. Fresh
enough for the full, busy life she’s
built since stepping away from
work.
Five years on, Koru Sleep is
part of her routine. She takes it
on holiday. She notices when she
doesn’t have it.
“This has been the best one,
really,” she says. “Brilliant.”
Some people expect retirement
to mean slowing down. Liz
expected more from herself. She
just needed her sleep to keep up.
“Sleep is my best friend,” she
says. And after five years, she
means it.

Tree-mendous planting effort
BY DANIEL ALVEY
A Canterbury University MBA
student has completed an
ambitious challenge to plant 500
trees in a day.
Tom Scott started at 5.30am
on Sunday and took six hours to
plant the trees in a paddock near
Tai Tapu.
“It was hard, properly hard.
My back is sore, I’m exhausted,
and I’ve got a whole new level of
respect for the people who do this
mahi (work) every day.”
To make it easier, the holes for
the trees were pre-dug, and Scott
had assistance putting the plant

guards around the trees once he
had planted them.
Before the planting, Scott raised
$2500 to buy the native plants.
Scott thanked landowner
Kathryn Taylor and Te Ara
Kakariki Greenway Trust for
their support.
At Coalgate Reserve, another
1000 natives were planted as
part of a day organised by the
council.
The cause of a house fire in Rolleston may never be known after a blaze
at a Lowes Rd home last Tuesday morning. One person was inside at the
time but escaped uninjured. Fire investigator Jonathan Ditmer said the
fire started at the rear of the house, but the damage was too extensive
to determine the cause. Rolleston Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Marty
Tier, who spotted smoke while driving nearby, raised a second alarm,
bringing in crews from Lincoln and Wigram. In a separate incident about
4am on Monday, crews from Rolleston, Lincoln, Wigram and West Melton
responded to a garage and sleepout fire on Newtons Rd, where the
sleepout was unoccupied but destroyed.

Christchurch School of Music
brings its music classes to Selwyn
PHOTO: DANIEL ALVEY
Laps of Foster Park
to prepare for
3800km Aussie run
hristchurch School of Music,
Te Kura Puoro (CSM) is very excited
to bring its highly regarded
children’s music classes to Selwyn.
Starting on Monday 18 May at the
Lincoln Events Centre, there will
be two classes - one for 2–4-yearolds
from 1.45pm – 2.30pm and
one for 5–8-year-olds from
3.30pm – 4.15pm in the Lincoln
Events Centre. In Term 2 there will
be 6 classes for the preschoolers
at a cost of $72 and for the school
aged children 5 sessions at a cost
of $60 (due to unavailability of
the venue after 3pm on the 29th
of June). Book your space now by
using the QR code below or
emailing musdir@csm.org.nz
These classes will be run by
Rolleston local, Rachel Davies,
who has been working under the
mentorship of Celia Stewart
MNZM (Ladbrooks local!) for two
years and is well experienced and
qualified to run these classes. In
the past two years she has
completed courses in both the
Orff Schulwerk and Kodaly
approaches to music education
and is very excited to bring
her knowledge and passion to the
Selwyn area.
The preschoolers will move, sing,
play and create with the best
resources possible and the school
age children will participate in
musicianship activities, singing
games, waiata, instrumental work,
basic music reading and rhythm
activities
There is a great deal of research
that shows how valuable music
learning is for a child’s
development. Music stimulates
multiple brain regions, enhances
cognitive, emotional, social and
motor development in children
while improving memory, language
and problem-solving skills. Music is
not a priority in many of our primary
schools so if you’re keen for
your child to get a great start in
their music learning these classes
are fun, engaging and educational.
The CSM has been offering high
quality music classes, instrumental
and vocal tuition and fantastic
ensemble opportunities for 70
years to anyone aged from 2 – 92 in
Christchurch and we are thrilled to
have the opportunity to expand into
the Selwyn District.
Any questions please email Celia

BY SAM COUGHLAN
Todd Andrews ran nine marathons in
three days around Foster Park from
Friday to Sunday – but that is barely a
10th of his ultimate goal.
Andrews, 43, completed 378km across
three days in 5km loops of the Foster
Park parkrun course, training for what
he calls “the dream run”, in which
he will attempt to run from Perth to
Sydney across the Australian desert in
July.
The Leeston resident will have to
complete 126km every day, equal to
three marathons, on the 3800km run
from Cottesloe Beach to Bondi Beach in
his goal of 30 days.
"A lot of people do these types of
activities to chase the high, almost like
a drug hit to try and get that endorphin
rush. It does feel good when you're on
that wave, but for me it's driven out of
purpose,” said Andrews.
“My purpose is to inspire people to
dream crazy dreams. I feel as though
the journey I've been on has kind of
been building to this whole run.”
His run at Foster Park was a simulation
for the real thing, completing
126km each day for three days straight.
He will need to do that for 27 more
days consecutively in the harsh heat of
the Nullabor Desert.
Andrews said the idea to run across
Australia came from a documentary
he watched on ultra-marathon runner
Nedd Brockmann, who completed the
journey in 47 days in 2022.
"I was really inspired by his story,
what he stood for and how he went
about chasing a few different things.
The messages that he was sharing in
that space was really quite cool.”
It was not until watching another documentary,
on British runner William
Goodge who completed the course in a
record 35 days last year, that Andrews
started planning for how to break that
record.
"I watched over his footage to see
how he went about executing the task
at hand,” said Andrews.
"As I started to do the maths and
work out his pacing strategy and his
timings around his feeding and bits and
pieces, I started to do those calculations
and I worked out in my head, there
were a few gaps in the way he went
about it.”
Andrews thought taking the record
down to 30 days would be possible.
With a sports science background and
then working as a personal trainer for
soldiers at Burnham Military Camp, he
was running more than 100km weekly
in commuting from his Rolleston home
to work every day.
"My mindset, my preparation and
everything really became quite laser
focused around that, and then I
anchored everything off my purpose.
"If someone can go out there and do
something as crazy as this, and maybe
inspire someone to chase their crazy
dream, then for me that's the anchor
and the driver that is really pushing me
towards getting over there and doing
it.”
He will not be alone in Australia.
Andrews will be joined by friend
Murray Thomas, who will bike
alongside him while he runs, while
former New Zealand track cyclist René
Heyde, Andrews’ girlfriend Annie
Hamilton and daughter Grace will track
data and provide other assistance.
Heyde, now 72, who won a bronze
medal at the 1974 Commonwealth
Games and biked across Australia in
2024, will be able to provide a wealth of
knowledge.
Andrews said he wanted to prove
there was no limit to what anyone
could do by completing the run.
"We as human beings often get
restricted by the limits we put on
ourselves. If you can set yourself a big
crazy dream, something in you deep
down that you're wanting to pursue in
your life, there's, actually nothing that
can stop you from achieving that.”

New quake sensor installed at stadium
Earthquake sensing tech to allow
fast, accurate safety assessments,
has been installed inside One
New Zealand Stadium.
The sensor, called SenseiQ,
measures inter-storey drift – the
relative movement between
floor and ceiling – during an
earthquake. It then provides
information that speeds up the
process of clearing a building for
safe reoccupation.
SenseiQ was developed by
Canterbury University civil and
environmental engineering Professor
Daniel Nilsson, Emeritus
Professor Roger Nokes and Dr
Gabriele Granello, a structural
engineer and former UC post
doctoral researcher now based
in Italy.
Said Nilsson: “The sensor
measures the damage, not just
the shake, telling us straight
away how much a building has
moved – the ‘inter-storey drift’ –
allowing the building’s condition
to be assessed more quickly and
accurately.
“Traditional safety inspections
are slow and costly leading to
prolonged downtime, unnecessary
disruptions and financial
costs. We’re delighted that the
new stadium – a symbol of
Christchurch’s post-quake recovery
– is now equipped with our
device.”
Nilsson said unlike conventional
sensors that measure
only acceleration, SenseiQ captures
both inter-storey drift and
acceleration – two factors that
directly correlate to the damage
a building sustains during an
earthquake.
Daniel Nilsson, right, and Andrew Logie are part of the team that developed
SenseiQ sensors which have been installed at One New Zealand Stadium.
PHOTO: CANTERBURY UNIVERSITY
The data is available within
minutes of a seismic event. The
sensor has already measured
one very small earthquake on
April 6, of 2.4 magnitude, at the
stadium.
Block out the wind, keep out
the flies, keep security safe
SenseiQ is made up of two
components, a sensor and a
target. The sensor is mounted
to the floor of a building and
the target is attached to the
corresponding ceiling.
Nilsson said by providing
precise, real-time data on a
building’s response to seismic
activity, SenseiQ enables structural
engineers to make fast and
informed estimates of building
damage. This helps building
managers make quick decisions
about reoccupation.
He predicts there will be
strong demand for the device
from businesses around
New Zealand, particularly in
Wellington.
“The idea behind this technology
came from what was seen in
the aftermath of the Canterbury
earthquakes when it took a long
time for buildings to be assessed
and cleared for people to come
back to work,” said Nilsson.
UC alumni, lawyer and independent
director Andrew Logie
has also joined the Sensei Solutions
Ltd team.
In another UC connection
to the stadium, the university
has just signed an agreement
with Venues Ōtautahi, which
manages the stadium, to gain
naming rights for the East
Stand.
From now until the end
of 2027, it will be called the
University of Canterbury Stand.
Whiplash plays
role in big jolts
Research into large earthquakes
shows they stop fast, with a
sharp backwards movement.
Scientists studied 12 major
earthquakes that moved along
the ground (rather than up
and down), using shaking data
recorded near the faults.
They found that the whiplashtype
stop was a common feature
of the earthquakes, which
included the 2010 Darfield and
2016 Kaikōura quakes, and say
it should be included in hazard
assessments.
Said lead author Dr Jesse
Kearse of Victoria University:
“Right at the end of the quakes,
the ground jolts strongly,
creating a kind of extra shake.
It’s a bit like when you’re in a
car and the driver brakes hard;
your body jerks forward and
then snaps back as the car stops.
“This means that big
earthquakes stop suddenly,
rather than slowly dying out.
This sudden stop can cause a
whiplash effect for buildings.
“As the ground quickly
changes direction, buildings
sway one way and then snap
back the other way. That sharp
backwards motion can be large,
up to one metre in the case of
the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake.
Such big movements can be
difficult for tall buildings to
withstand.
“We found that they are most
likely to occur where there are
bends or gaps in the fault lines,
which helps us plan for these
strong whiplash motions that
happen in large earthquakes.”

Unbeaten Waihora
put shield on line
during club day
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Waihora’s unbeaten start to
the season will be put to the
test with combined country
and Coleman Shield points up
for grabs against Darfield on
Saturday.
The Magpies will celebrate
their club day, and put the
Murray Cooper Shield – Ellesmere’s
challenge shield – and
Miller Cup – played for between
Waihora and Darfield – up for
grabs.
Head coach Derek Smith said
the team have been looking
ahead to this weekend since
their 46-22 win over Southern
in Hinds on Saturday.
“Coming back from Southern,
pretty much by eight o'clock at
night, all the boys' attention and
focus has shifted to Darfield.
We're expecting a big one."
Darfield sit second in pool A,
three points behind Waihora
after beating Oxford 33-27 on
Thursday.
Smith said he will be relying
on Waihora’s experienced
players to lead the way after
injuries to No 8 Matt Getz, wing
Brendon Maitland and openside
flanker Clark Pithie.
"I’ll be looking for our team
leaders. The two Liam Robinsons
in our team, the hooker,
and the lock, who had his 50th
games down at Southern,” he
said.
“And then, you know, it'd be
Will Gualter, Harry Kirk, those
guys who have had all that
experience up against their vast
experience.”
Waihora may also be able
to call on flanker Bailey Clark,
who played for the New Zealand
under 85kg side in Sri
Lanka on Monday morning and
was due back in the country
this week.
Clark, who has played more
than 100 division 1 games for
Waihora, is a handy player to
have, said Smith.
"Looking forward to him coming
back, hopefully he's not too
exhausted from such a luxurious
trip.
"It’s a really good opportunity
for someone like Bailey to
be able to get that higher-level,
national-level coaching. I'm
looking forward to him coming
back with some new ideas, and
I think he's already seen a lift
in his confidence this year just
from being involved.”
Waihora fullback Harrison Kirk takes on the Southern defence in the 46-22 win. Below – Wing Josh Brown scores.

Coaches embrace new-era first XV rivalry
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Head coaching at a high level
was never something Jade
Britain was particularly keen on.
He had coached his sons’ junior
teams at Prebbleton and
worked as an assistant with
Ellesmere age-group and Canterbury
Metro sides, but it took him
two attempts to apply for the
Lincoln Combined head coaching
role he now holds.
“I saw the ad go up, and I
didn’t really want to be a head
coach,” he said.
“I really just enjoyed the specialty
stuff – attack or defence or
scrums or whatever. Then they
re-advertised, and I just threw
my name in the hat.”
Britain was named as Lincoln
Combined’s head coach in
December. The side will play in
this year’s Miles Toyota Championship
after being relegated
following Rolleston College’s
decision to enter a standalone
first XV.
“There’s a clear direction on
what they want to achieve, and
my sons (aged eight and 11) are in
the zone for Lincoln High School,
so there’s a high possibility
they’re going there,” Britain said.
“I’d love to help implement a
rugby programme that means
kids can stay in the country and
don’t have to go into the big
schools to play good rugby.”
Rolleston College head coach
Ethan Harrison had already
spent three years involved in
the school’s rugby programme
before taking charge of its inaugural
first XV
Lincoln Combined head coach Jade Britain says a spot in the final is the ultimate goal for him ahead of his first season in
charge of the team.
PHOTO: ANDREW HALLIGAN
He had previously coached the
school’s under 14.5 and under 16
teams.
His sons Hunter, 17, and Jacob,
15, are part of Rolleston’s first
XV.
“It’s awesome – I can help them
develop and watch them enjoy
their footy with their mates and
achieve their goals, which is
really cool,” Harrison said.
Harrison stepped away from
playing, where he most recently
turned out for Rolleston in division
2, to focus on coaching.
He said Rolleston’s decision
to go it alone after being part of
the combined team since 2017
came down to growing player
numbers.
“It’s been the goal of the college
for a while now to build
towards this point, and I think
they feel like the player numbers
at the college warrant
stepping into that space now,
rather than waiting for perfect
timing.
“We’re not expecting a perfect
season or anything like that, but
we think this is a really good

couple of years, some of them
longer, and build a good trajectory
for what the next few
seasons are going to look like.”
Both coaches pointed to the
Selwyn derby on June 20 at
Rolleston College as the match
they were most looking forward
to.
“You can’t stop the boys from

Lincoln claimed a 35-13 win in
pre-season two weeks ago.
Harrison said plenty of players
on both sides already knew each
other through years of playing
together or against one another.
“A lot of these guys in our
team this year have played
against a lot of the boys in the
Lincoln Combined team for a
number of years, so there’s been
a bit of a rivalry between Rolleston
College and Lincoln over
the last couple of years, which is
always great.
“Those same guys are moving
up into the first XV space this
year, so that’s probably one we’ll
enjoy.”
Lincoln open their season

Rolleston have a first-round

Britain said his personal
benchmark for the season was
making the final.

Colts take centre stage under
new Rhodes Park floodlights
BY SAM COUGHLAN
When Rhodes Park plays
host to the Ellesmere colts
competition’s own Super Round
tonight, it will be illuminated
by new floodlights unveiled last
month.
Eight of the 10 teams in the
competition will be in action at
the Tai Tapu ground, home of
the Waihora Rugby Club. The
lights were installed earlier this
year and were first used in a
competitive match on April 17,
when Waihora’s division 3 side
played Hornby.
Longtime Waihora member
Brendon Friel cut the ribbon
ahead of that match and said
the project had been a long time
coming.
“It’s sort of been an (eight
to 10 year) process of actually
going, ‘right, this is what we
need’,” Friel said.
“We got our new community
centre built (in 2020) and then
the next thing for us was to try
and get some new lights. We
had lights, but they were pretty
substandard, especially on our
training fields.”
Friel said the cost for the project
was around $760,000, of
which $700,000 was funded by
the Selwyn District Council. The
contract was awarded to Arnold
Jensen Electrical in September
last year.
The new lights have already
been used for several division
Waihora’s Brendon Friel cuts the ribbon to officially unveil the new lights at
Rhodes Park prior to the club’s division 3 side’s clash with Hornby.
3, colts and schoolboy games,
as well as weekly training sessions,
and the club will host
four colts matches tonight
across the No 1 and No 2 fields.
Waihora Longhorns play
Lincoln Bales at 6pm on No 1,
while Lincoln Stags face Banks
Peninsula on No 2. At 7.35pm,
Waihora Humpbacks take on
Springston on No 1, alongside
Darfield’s clash with Lincoln
University on No 2.
Prebbleton and West Melton
are the only teams not in action.
“We’ve got a great setting,
there’s nothing better,” Friel
said.
“Last (week) we had a colts
game, we probably had 200 students
up on the embankment
– great thrill, great hum, it was
just a real good atmosphere.”
Rhodes Park will also host
Waihora’s division 3 side under
lights against Kirwee on Friday.
The team, which plays every
Friday night, has three more
scheduled home games later
this season.

Stallions aim to end losing streak,
progress to second round of cup
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Selwyn United’s women’s team
will meet Cashmere Technical
in their Reta Fitzpatrick Cup
quarter-final on Tuesday in
a rematch of last season’s
semi-final.
The side, who play in
the second-tier Mainland
Premiership, will meet the
top-flight Women’s South
Island League side, Cashmere,
at English Park, with the
winner set to progress to the
semi-finals.
Selwyn went down
5-0 to Cashmere in their
semi-final last year after
going into the game as huge
underdogs.
They currently sit
second in the premiership
with three wins and two
draws, including a 3-0 win
over NW United on Saturday,
when midfielder Tsuzumi
Huguchi scored all three
goals.
Cashmere are second in the
WSIL after two rounds, having
won both their games.
They trail Dunedin City
Royals on goal difference.

QUARTER-FINAL
Selwyn United v Cashmere Technical,
English Park, 7.30pm Tuesday
Selwyn United will be hoping
a change in competition leads
to a change in fortunes when
they kick off their Chatham Cup
campaign against Christchurch
United on Saturday.
The Stallions have lost their
last three Southern League
matches, with a 3-0 defeat to
second-placed Ferrymead Bays
on Saturday, and sit bottom of
the league below Dunedin City
Royals on goal difference.
Their only victory came four
weeks ago against the Royals.
They will face Christchurch
United in the first round of the
cup. The club has never progressed
past the second round
of the nationwide knockout
competition.
Since they first appeared in
the cup competition in 2013,
Selwyn have reached the second
round on six occasions.
Last year they beat Western
5-0 before bowing out in a 4-1
defeat to Ferrymead Bays.
Selwyn have shown promise
this season. They drew 1-1 with
United and had a narrow 2-1
defeat to defending champions
Coastal Spirit last month before
their win over Dunedin.

RURAL LIFE
From idyllic to hogwash:
the rural origins of everyday phrases
Pet on the limit
ISABELLE TERESA
Many words we use today originate
from rural living, either the actual
experience of it or a romanticised
ideal. Here are some linguistic gems
from rural life – from the joyous to the
practical to the mundane – that have
soaked into our language, changed
meaning along the way, and are now
common across town and country alike.
Romanticised beauty
We use idyllic for any blissful setting,
feeling or relationship, but the origin
was far more specific. “Idyll” in Greek
meant “little picture”, and became
firmly linked with rural settings by a set
of short 3rd-century BC poems called the
Idylls, which depicted rustic love scenes.
Similarly, Arcadia, which we now use
for any place we perceive as paradise,
was real; a remote mountainous
province of ancient Greece celebrated
by Virgil as the epitome of rural
contentment.
Good fences make good neighbours
Limit comes from Latin, and once
only meant the boundary or pathway
between fields. It proved such a handy
word that, since the 1500s, we’ve
broadened its usage to apply in all
contexts.
Of course… sheep
The job title Pastor meant “shepherd”
in Latin, which is why the Church
adopted it for ministers exhibiting
pastoral care to their flock.
Muster comes from the Latin
word “to show”, with the
concept of assembling and
inspecting – once used mainly
for sheep, it now commonly
refers to gatherings of people
as well. A trendsetter may be
dubbed a bellwether, little suspecting
its Old English origins as the ram that
led out the flock and yes, wore a bell.
And surprisingly pets have on-farm
origins, with our domestic companions
all now grouped under a 15th-century
Scottish variant of a French phrase, the
“petit” tame lamb raised by hand.
Down to earth
Not a fan of this whimsical article?
You could criticise it as hogwash – the
Middle English phrase for watery slops
fed to pigs.
You’re probably down-to-earth –
used in 1920s advertising to signal fair
prices, but by now, one of our highest
compliments for someone who is
practical, honest and direct. But if you
call a spade a spade, you’re echoing
Plutarch – we inherited that phrase, too,
from the ancient Greeks.

Garden smarter over winter for spring success
Expert advice on what to do for
your garden this week
VEGETABLES
Start preparing soil now for
early potato plantings in August
by adding plenty of compost,
but no lime, to an area of garden
facing north or northeast.
Ideally, it will be a sheltered
site along the western side
by a hedge, fence or artificial
windbreak.
Compost heaps and topless
bins need to be protected from
heavy winter rains. Heavy
plastic fertiliser bags are ideal,
as they help keep the bin warm,
but sheets of corrugated iron are
satisfactory.
Keep coverings in place with
rocks or bricks.
Compost heaps take longer
to rot down at this time of the
year and should be turned over
regularly, a messy job but one
well worth the effort.
A rotating barrel composter
makes this job easy and a
simple version can be made by a
competent home handyman.
A rotating barrel composter makes the slightly unpleasant job of regularly
turning your compost much easier. A simple version can be made by a competent
home handyman.
PHOTOS: GETTY
If fowl manure is available,
added to the compost bin, its
strong nitrogen content will
speed up the decomposition
process.
Wear a mask or tie a scarf
around the nose and mouth if
gathering dry manure from a
henhouse.
Green manure crops that
have reached 15cm or higher
should be dug in from now on,
so the ground can be used for
sowing early crops in August or
September.
Left too long, the raw material
will not have decomposed
sufficiently for seeds to
germinate.
The most active soil microorganisms
are in the top 15cm,
so, for rapid decomposition,
chop the green crops with
a spade and turn under the
surface only.
Adding garden lime at the
same time will aid the process
and keep the soil sweet and
easier to work later.
Leave the soil surface as
rough as possible for frosts
and weather to break it up into
better condition.
FLOWERS

plants with flowers in shades of
red, pink and purple, as well as
white.
Purple Passion is a good, deep
colour, while lavender Alice
Hindley and pink Susan are
ideal for corner where softer
colours are wanted.
Ericas provide a touch of
purple, red, pink or white
winter colour.
Slow growth in the colder
months extends the time
flowers stay on the plants.
Erica carnea varieties make
up the main winter-flowering
group and will tolerate some
lime in the soil.
Erica darleyensis flowers
for the longest period,
bearing masses of small, coralpink
flowers from mid-June
onwards.
FRUIT
This is the time to buy
raspberries, blackberries,
boysenberries, loganberries,
youngberries and tayberries, as
they are planted when dormant.
Tayberries are popular as they
make excellent jam, as well as
being a good dessert fruit.
One plant would be sufficient
for a small family, as established
plants crop heavily.
Black Satin and Navaho are
thornless blackberries that fruit
on the previous season’s wood,
while Mapua, Tasman and
McNichol's Choice are almostspineless
boysenberries.
Like raspberries, these
brambles all give better crops
if grown in moist soil to which
plenty of manure or compost has
been added.

Ford’s Puma a capable but
overlooked compact SUV
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
It’s something of a head-scratcher why the
Ford Puma hasn’t climbed the sales charts
after six years on the market, given its
likeability, clean modern styling, punchy
performance and well-sorted road holding.
Replicating its success in the UK and
Europe was always going to be a tough ask.
That challenge was compounded by starting
life here as a relative unknown and
going up against a raft of well-established
competitors. Its modest 1.0-litre turbocharged
three-cylinder engine has also
been a hurdle. There remains some buyer
resistance locally to smaller engines, unlike
in Europe and the UK where they are more
widely accepted.
Even so, the Puma still looks fresh – no
small feat this far into its model cycle –
thanks to its curvaceous styling and subtle
sloping roofline. Together, these elements
give it a clear point of difference over several
rivals.
There are two Puma variants available
here, both front-wheel drive, starting with
the $42,990 ST-Line and topped by the ST at
$48,990. The ST-Line tested here looks the
part, riding on eye-catching 17-inch alloy
wheels, with side skirts, a neatly integrated
rear spoiler and distinctive eye-shaped
LED headlights.
Power comes from Ford’s energetic and
acclaimed mild-hybrid 1.0-litre turbocharged
EcoBoost three-cylinder engine,
paired with a seven-speed automatic
transmission. With 92kW and 170Nm, it
punches above its weight.
The engine packs in clever tech, including
high-pressure direct fuel injection,
twin-independent variable cam timing and
cylinder deactivation to save fuel.
Performance is lively, with sharp acceleration,
strong mid-range pull and a
surprisingly sporty exhaust note that gives
the Puma real character.
My only gripe is a touch of turbo lag
under full throttle from a standing start – a
brief pause between planting the accelerator
and the power arriving. Once it does,
the Puma quickly hits its stride.
For those wanting more, the range-topping
ST offers a harder-charging version of
the same engine, lifting outputs to 125kW
and 210Nm. It’s a noticeable step up,
though the $6000 jump may be a stretch

for some buyers.
For such a compact SUV, Ford has done
well to carve out a spacious cabin and
a large, practical boot. The latter is easy
to load, while a relatively long 2588mm
wheelbase helps deliver generous legroom
front and rear.
Inside, the cabin is smartly designed,
with tactile materials and a driver-focused
layout. The steering wheel carries controls
for voice-activated sat-nav and Apple
CarPlay/Android Auto. Wireless charging
is included for compatible devices, along
with two USB ports and a 12V outlet.
A seven-speaker audio system with
Bluetooth streaming keeps occupants
entertained, while satellite navigation
is accessed via an 8.0-inch full-colour
touchscreen that also doubles as a
180-degree reversing camera, making
parking easy.
FordPass Connect adds another layer
of convenience via a built-in modem,
allowing owners to access roadside
assistance, schedule servicing and check
service history through their smartphone.
Safety is well covered with a
comprehensive suite of driver assistance
features. Highlights include autonomous
emergency braking with pedestrian
detection, lane keep aid with lane
departure warning, traffic sign recognition
and tyre pressure monitoring.
The Puma is also the first Ford SUV to
feature selectable drive modes: Normal,
Sport, Eco, Slippery and Trail. The latter
two improve traction on more challenging
surfaces such as wet roads or gravel. While
it’s not all-wheel drive, it offers useful extra
confidence in tricky conditions.
Where the Puma really shines is
on the road. Its ride and handling are
among the best in the compact SUV class.
The handling is sharp, yet Ford hasn’t
sacrificed comfort, with a suspension setup
that delivers a smooth, composed ride.
Combine that with the lively EcoBoost
engine and distinctive styling, and the
Puma stands out as a compact SUV that not
only looks good, but drives even better.

To achieve this goal you n ed to
develop some awarene s around the
basic requirements of exercising for
health and fitne s. First and foremost
this has to do with 3 key principles:
1. How often do you train?
To improve your level of health and
fitne s you wi l n ed to aim for 4
se sions per w ek. 2 or 3 se sions per
w ek wi l only maintain what you have
and 1 se sion per w ek is definitely not
sufficient.
2. How long are your se sions?
The duration of your se sions wi l
genera ly build towards betw en 30
and 50 minutes with one longer se sion
of 60-80 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at?
The g od thing abou the programme
is that a l you runs wi l be done
at submaximal pace, also ca led
conversation pace. That means a pace
where you can sti l talk. If you can’t
talk you are going t o fast and you
are likely to come to a grinding halt
s oner or later.
This programme and a companying
information are wri ten as a guide only. If you
are concerned about your health at any stage
please undergo a health check with your GP.

ANZAC DAY
SATURDAY APRIL 25, 2026
A symbol of remembrance
and sacrifice
By Fiona Robinson
What is one of the most recognisable symbols of
remembrance leading up to Anzac Day? It is the red
poppy. Worn each April in New Zealand and Australia,
and at sites around the world commemorating
ANZAC Day, it honours the soldiers who served and
those who lost their lives in war.
After the fighting acro s Europe during WWI, bright
red poppies were among the first flowers to grow in
the mud and soil of the ba tlefields. These flowers
became a powerful symbol of remembrance after
the famous poem by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel
John McCrae, “In Flanders Fields,” which described
poppies growing among the graves of fa len soldiers.
The red poppy, or Flanders poppy, also came to
represent the sacrifice of soldiers in campaigns such
as the Ga lipoli Campaign. The red poppy became
a symbol of the bravery and sacrifice of those who
served during the Ga lipoli campaign of 1915 and is
central to the ANZAC story.
While the first official Poppy Day in New Zealand was
planned for Armistice Day in 1921, due to a delay in
the shipment of silk poppies from France, it was held
on 24 April 1922, the day before Anzac Day.
For many years, red plastic and paper poppies
were made in Christchurch by members of the
Christchurch Royal New Zealand Returned and
Services’ A sociation (RNZRSA) and were worn
throughout New Zealand. However, as of this year,
the RNZRSA wi l se l a new sustainable poppy made
from biodegradable paper, manufactured by the
Royal British Legion in Kent, England, at this year’s
Poppy Day Appeal.
Today, poppies are sold each year in the lead-up
to Anzac Day during the annual Poppy Appeal
organised by the RNZRSA. Volunteers stand in
towns and shopping areas, se ling the sma l red
poppies that people wear as a visible sign of respect.
The money raised helps support veterans and their
families, including today’s soldiers, a sisting with
welfare, housing, health services, and community
programmes. In communities acro s the country,
including those throughout Selwyn, buying
and wearing a poppy has become a simple but
meaningful way for people to show their gratitude.
The red poppy is a sma l symbol, but it is a powerful
reminder of courage, sacrifice, and remembrance,
and remains part of New Zealand’s history.

15 MARCH 2026 COMMUNITY FUN RUN | 12KM OR 6KM W W W . C I T Y 2 S U R F. C O. N Z
The training programme wi l stay the same this w ek as last w ek but may I su ges that you go and explore the geographical
options you have for your training. This means not only exploring your own neighbourh od but also venturing to places like
the Burw od Plantation, the beach or the Port Hi ls. Of course i takes a bit more time as you n ed transport so the w ekend
might be the bes time to do this. The best surface to run on i soft, like gra s, sand or gravel; it is easier on the leg so try and do
the majority of your se sions on these types of surfaces if po sible. If you have time, venture into the Port Hi ls. A g od place to
start is the track which runs betw en the sign of the Takahe and the sign of the Kiwi. This is a gradual incline which you can do
out and back for as far as you can comfortably go. Once you have mastered this track you can venture beyond anywhere in the
port hi ls. Jo ging on the Port Hi ls walking tracks takes a bit of concentration as the te rain underf ot can be uneven. Walking
or jo ging and ru ning uphi l wi l automatica ly increase the intensity a fraction because you use larger muscle groups. It is a
type of endurance training which wi l a celerate your strength and fitne s with incredible views of our beautiful city as an extra
bonus. Going up, take sma l steps and take your time so you stay mainly in zone 1 and 2. Remember that zone 1 is perceived as
an easy e fort which you can maintain for very long periods of time. In zone 2 you wi l get slightly pu fed but you can sti l have a
conversation. Initia ly take it easy on the downhi l. It can be hard on the legs, so go careful. A this time of the year the beach is
also an a tractive option for a workout. The soft sand wi l a d an extra dimension and help the strength development. On hot
days go for the forest or parks as the shade provided by the tr es wi l protect you from the blazing sun. Hagley Park is of course
the jewel in the crown as far as parks go with lots of variety and enough options never to have to do the same route.

Your guide to all things Real Estate
in the Selwyn District
Thinking of renovating?
Start by asking yourself these questions
11
Renovating your home should be an
exciting project that offers better living,
more space, and added value, but while
that can all be true, the reality is a
little more complicated with stretched
budgets, timeline shifts, and big
decisions to make.
The difference between a renovation
that works and one that doesn’t often
comes down to what happens before
any work is carried out.
If you’re thinking of renovating, ask
yourself these five simple questions, to
save yourself time, money, and a whole
lot of hassle.
Why are you really renovating?
OK, so this one sounds obvious but it
can be where many projects go off-track.
Are you renovating to improve your
day-to-day living? To make room for
a growing family? To increase resale
value? Knowing what you want and
expect from your renovation will help
guide your decisions.
Be specific with why you’re
renovating, define what doesn’t
currently work in your home, and then
how a renovation could remedy that.
The clearer your end goal, the easier
it becomes to make decisions further
down the line.
What is your real budget?
Your reno budget will rarely be the
number you start with. As well as
materials and labour costs, there can
be other expenses you might not have
thought about, such as design fees,
council consent, or even temporary
accommodation. You might also unearth
some issues you weren’t aware of until
building work began.
To help combat some of these
potential pitfalls, add in a contingency
buffer of around 10-20%.
It’s also worth considering what areas
you’re happy to splurge on and where
you’d rather be frugal.
Is this reno for now or later?
Designing for now compared for
the future can result in very different
outcomes when it comes to your
renovation plans.
If you’re planning on staying in your
home long-term, it makes sense to tailor
your living spaces to you and your
family, even if this means making some
very personalised choices.
However, if you’re thinking of selling
in the next few years, then you might
want to avoid overly niche design
choices, that could limit its appeal to
potential buyers.
Can your home support what you want?
Designing an open-plan living space,
introducing more windows, or adding
on an extra room might all sound
straight forward enough, but you could
find your home is limited due to things
like structural walls, site constraints,
and even local regulations.
The best way to navigate this and
find out if your plans are achievable
is to work with a builder, designer, or
architect early on who will be able to
tell you what is feasible before you rush
too far ahead of yourself.
Are you ready for the disruption?
Noise, dust, limited access, and a
stream of tradies are all part of the
process of getting your dream home,
but you need to be realistic about how
your family will live around these
disruptions.
Even smaller home renovation
projects can have a big impact on
your life, particularly if it involves the
kitchen or bathroom. Meanwhile, if it’s
a larger project, you might be better off
moving out temporarily while the work
is ongoing.
