LiveWire

Mark Surovchak

I hope you and your students enjoy performing this piece!

PROGRAM NOTES

Anytime that I’ve been asked to write a piece for friends and their students, I’ve tried to musically capture my

friends' / colleagues' essence in the piece being written. LiveWire was commissioned by the Franklin Regional

High School Wind Ensemble, Nicholas Nutter, Director. I have known Nick since he was a student in high school at

Franklin Regional High School and our friendship has only grown since he took over teaching at his alma mater.

Nick is a versatile saxophonist and woodwind doubler, and what he gives his students in their classroom on a daily

basis as a music educator is incredible. When he told me that I can write whatever I wanted, I really wanted to

compose a groove-oriented piece with some funkiness and opportunities for solos. Nick mentioned to me that his

flute students have a quartet that explores beat-boxing literature, so including flutter-tonguing throughout added

to the fun in creating this piece. It’s always an honor when friends ask me to write for their groups, and I am

incredibly grateful to Nick for the opportunity to write a piece for his students!

LiveWire received its premiere by the Franklin Regional High School Wind Ensemble on April 14, 2026.

PERFORMANCE NOTES

Pedal markings have not been indicated in vibraphone, however, performers should pedal often enough in order

to not create any bleeding of notes or blur in sound.

In parts such as Flute, Bassoon, Clarinet 2 & 3, Alto Sax, Trumpet 2 & 3, Trombone, while I believe the divisi is

understood, it’s not always indicated as the “back and forth” of unison playing or divisi occurs pretty quickly in

places. In those moments when it returns to unison playing, players should be careful to not overplay for balance

purposes. If needed, the conductor can always lessen the amount of players in those sections.

Percussion 1, 2 and 3 parts are really that of a “deconstructed drumset” in order to provide more playing

opportunities for percussionists in a Wind Ensemble setting while still having the feel of a drumset part. While

Percussion 2 & 3 can / should be split amongst players, Percussion 1 should be one player. If at all possible, the

trashiest sounding china cymbal is preferred for this piece.

While measures 60 - 80 have a suggested written out duet amongst alto sax / flute and piccolo / flute, performers

may also choose to perform an improvised solo throughout if a duet may not be an option.

As mentioned above, my goal with this piece was to musically create a piece for Wind Ensemble with groove and

drive throughout that also explored techniques not always found in traditional wind music. The energy should

remain high throughout.
