What makes a forever home in 2026?

You might be familiar with the adage

‘location, location, location’ when it

comes to building or buying a home,

but in 2026 smart homeowners in

Canterbury are looking for a lot more

than simply where to buy.

In fact, what we consider to be a

‘forever home’ has shifted significantly

in recent years and it’s no longer defined

simply by size, architectural style, or

location alone. Instead, the ‘forever

home’ now needs to reflect how well

your living spaces can support real

living both now and long into the future.

Designed for life

Flexibility is key when it comes to

finding, or building, your forever home.

These days, families are less static: your

kids may grow up and fly the nest only

to return again years later, you might

have older relatives move in, or you

could find that working-from-home has

become the norm.

So, homes that are adaptable and

flexible to meet changing needs are in

high demand. In real terms, this could

look like guest rooms that have been

carefully converted into a home office,

multi-purpose spaces that can be opened

up and closed off depending on how

they’re being used, or even a ‘granny

flat’ or tiny home in the garden.

Built with resilience in mind

Canterbury homeowners are more

aware than most about the importance

of resilience when it comes to their

property, with the region placing a

strong emphasis on strong foundations,

both literally and structurally.

In 2026, this means a forever home

will be robust, well-consented, and

designed with long-term durability at

the forefront.

Thankfully, there’s a wealth of

fantastic local businesses who can help

create a home that’s truly built to last,

whether you’re starting out with a clean

slate or hoping to improve what you

already have.

Indoor-outdoor living

Kiwis have always loved the great

outdoors, and this is no different when it

comes to our homes, but in recent years

expectations for indoor-outdoor living

have matured.

Homeowners are no longer content

with simply having a lot of outdoor

space, they need it to be useable yearround

and a true extension of their

home, this means awnings, pergolas,

canopies, and even full-on outdoor

kitchens and living spaces are more

popular than ever.

There’s also been a stronger focus on

well-planned transitions between indoor

and outdoor spaces, to make them look

more intentional and connected.

Smart tech for smart living

Smart home systems are becoming

increasingly common throughout

Canterbury homes, but with one key

goal: technology must make life easier,

not more complicated.

In forever homes, the use of smart

tech is subtle and practical, think handy

home security systems, energy-saving

lighting, and heating that can work

reliably in the background without

much thought. Savvy homeowners are

shying away from novelty, in favour of

convenience and efficiency that’ll stand

the test of time.

Go green, save money

In the year 2026, sustainability and

efficiency are no longer a niche

consideration and is now central to

creating a true forever home.

Solar panels, cost-saving heat pumps,

double glazing, and systems that offer

better water efficiency are all becoming

common features, alongside more

traditional energy-boosting options, such

as investing in decent window coverings

and swapping to cheaper-to-run LED

bulbs. Homes that can maintain comfort

without incurring excessive running

costs are truly future-proof investments.

A home that grows

Ultimately, the key to a forever home in

Canterbury is one that is functional and

will remain so in years to come.

A home that adapts to growing

families and life changes, as well as

withstanding environmental and

economic pressures, while remaining

comfortable and relevant as the years

and decades pass.

When you’re planning a home makeover project, no

matter how big or small, it’s important to have a clear idea

of what you want to achieve.

For many people, that includes being clear about

whether they are making over their home to suit their own

lifestyle and taste or whether they are improving things to

make their home more appealing and valuable to potential

buyers.

The variables

Where you put your focus will largely depend on how long

you expect to be in your current home.

If it’s your first home, you might be expecting to outgrow

or upgrade your house within a year or two, or you might

have bought a do-up with the goal of selling it on.

In these cases, your focus should be more skewed to

potential buyers.

If you’ve bought a home you intend to live in for

many years, your makeover is obviously going to

be much more focused on what you like and how

you and your family live in it.

Good foundations

Whether you’re designing for yourself or for

others, a backdrop in Resene whites and neutrals

can be your best friend. It allows you to create

a versatile, adaptable canvas, or spark the

imagination of potential buyers.

Resene Colour Consultant Jackie Nicholls suggests

exploring some of Resene’s complex mid-tone neutrals

rather than sticking to a minimalist white-on-white

approach.

Within the Resene Whites and Neutrals range there are

many off-whites and creamy tones that look quite different

in different light conditions or when placed next to other

colours, appearing warmer or cooler, she says.

Some good examples are Half Tea, Spanish White, and

Fossil. You can then build up the personalisation of your

space, adding accent notes in your favourite colours.

Try a dramatic contrast with a single chair or shelf

painted in a bold shade like Moroccan Spice, against walls

in Half Tea, or layer in richer neutrals like Lemon Grass or

Eternity for earthier contrast.

A light touch of colour

If part of your renovation is giving your walls a refresh,

you can work with subtle pastel and muted colours that

will give a widely appealing neutral look, with a little extra

colour. Some subtle shades to try are grey-blues like Nebula,

pastel greens like Paris White, peach tones like Cashmere or

pale yellows like Egg Sour.

Tips for outdoors

A key thing for your outdoor space is to make it look both

intentional and adaptable. That means creating at least one

space that feels sheltered and well-used, ideally connected

to your interior for an indoor-outdoor flow.

Take a similar approach to your indoor living area

by using a combination of neutrals in wood stains like

Colorwood Natural or Colorwood Driftwood and outdoor

paint shades like Merino and White Pointer. Add some

personality to your furniture and planters with bold

sunshine shades like Meteor, Mai Tai, and Hero.

If you need help finding the right colours to bring out

the best in your home, visit your local Resene ColorShop,

ask a Resene Colour Expert free online, www.resene.com/

colourexpert, or book a Resene Colour Consultation free

instore or virtually or a paid home visit in selected areas,

www.resene.com/colourconsult.

Top Tip

A darker fence stain like Waterborne Woodsman

Charred Black can actually make your outdoor area

feel larger as black tends to recede from the eye so

your property borders aren’t so firmly defined. This

is particularly true when it’s used on fences behind

trees and shrubs, as it starts to disappear into the

shadows.

10 | BUILD BUY RENOVATE

From toys to teens

How to redecorate

as they grow

Painful as it may be, you have to admit

the room that worked beautifully for a

toddler is of little use to a teenager.

If you let the children steer the

changes, they are more likely to be

willing participants and take pride in the

outcome.

The bedroom needs to be a multifunctional

space. The bed is obviously

the main item, providing a comfortable

place for the young body to regenerate

nightly.

Is your child’s bed big enough

nowadays? If you can’t tell, ask.

Once the size is sorted, check the

sheets and blankets or duvet are up to

scratch. Bedding is one area where being

frugal is not recommended. Sheets made

from natural fibres and coverings made

from wool are worthwhile investments

in your child’s wellbeing.

Now, on to the room’s other uses.

Young children appreciate having a

play space of their own. A toy box keeps

everything contained and tidy, and a

shelf or dresser allows favourite items to

be displayed.

A toy box can be made from a simple

cardboard box. Depending on the

children’s ages and abilities, they could

be allowed to decorate it by painting or

drawing on it or covering it in a collage

of their artwork. An adult could help out

by covering it in the same wallpaper as

the room, or one that contrasts nicely.

Older children will benefit from

having a desk in their room — a place to

do homework, away from family noise

and distractions. You don’t have to buy

an expensive desk. Look around secondhand

shops for a funky retro Formica

table, for instance, or sand down the

top of an old wooden table. Coat it in

artwork or photos produced by the child

and cover with several coats of lacquer

to achieve a smooth surface. Or if the

budget permits, a glass top will allow

the material underneath to be changed

whenever the child is prepared to do it.

Good lighting is important for eyesight,

so get a desk lamp for homework. If the

child wants a particular type, it could

become a birthday or Christmas present.

Shelves to hold books and collectibles

are very handy. They can be made by the

child from bricks and planks.

Decorative elements can be updated

as the children get older. The mobile

that helped to keep babies amused can

be replaced with one made from items

they love, such as sea shells, pebbles,

or trinkets. Anything that cannot be

punctured for hanging can be wrapped

in thin copper wire or some other

thread.

Early-childhood bunting can be

substituted for a string of fairy lights,

and scatter cushions can have new

covers made. It’s as easy as copying the

design of an envelope, with a tucked-in

overlap at the back — no need to mess

around sewing in a zip. Children can

also be encouraged to sew or crochet

their own bedcover, and possibly to

paint their bedroom walls if you’re

confident they can manage it.

As parents, you can ensure the

possibilities stay practical and low-cost.

Once children know their limitations,

they can be endlessly inventive. Siblings

can inspire each other if they sit round

and have a brainstorming session. A

little leeway can be a powerful force.

They will love that you have trusted

them to take charge of their own room

and allowed them to follow their own

creative path.

And in a few years’ time, you can do it

all again!

Enviro Master helping Cantabrians get comfort right

For more than two decades, Enviro Master has been

helping Cantabrians strike the perfect balance when

it comes to heating and cooling their homes and

workplaces.

Since 2002, the Christchurch-based team has built

a reputation for delivering tailored solutions that

prioritise comfort, energy efficiency, and long-term

performance. Backed by a highly experienced team of

sales consultants, qualified electricians, and heating

and refrigeration engineers, Enviro Master offers one

of the region’s most comprehensive ranges of heat

pumps and air conditioning systems.

Working with leading brands including Panasonic,

Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Fujitsu, the company

is not aligned to any single manufacturer. That

independence means customers receive genuinely

unbiased advice — focused solely on finding the most

effective and cost-efficient solution for their specific

needs.

Whether it’s a single room or an entire property,

Enviro Master takes a customised approach.

Increasingly, homeowners are looking for wholehome

comfort solutions that maintain consistent

temperatures year-round. This is where ducted and

multi-room systems come into their own — and where

Enviro Master’s design, installation and commissioning

expertise makes a real difference.

Importantly, every project

begins with a no-obligation,

on-site consultation. One of the

team’s specialists will assess the

property, discuss requirements,

and recommend a system designed

to deliver optimal performance —

ensuring clients can make informed

decisions with confidence.

For eligible homeowners, financial

support may also be available

through the Warmer Kiwi Homes

initiative. This programme can cover

up to 90 percent of the cost of a new

heat pump (up to $3,450 including

GST), helping make healthier,

more energy-efficient homes more

accessible.

Eligibility typically applies to

owner-occupiers with a Community Services Card or

SuperGold Combo Card, or those living in qualifying

areas, with additional criteria around insulation and

existing heating. Enviro Master can guide customers

through both eligibility and the application process,

making it straightforward from start to finish.

With a strong focus on quality workmanship, trusted

advice, and tailored solutions, Enviro Master continues

to help Cantabrians create warmer, healthier, and more

comfortable spaces — in every season.

Delivering smarter

hot water solutions

Hot water is one of the biggest contributors to

household energy use, yet it’s often overlooked

when homeowners think about improving comfort

and efficiency. That’s where Enviro Master is helping

Cantabrians make smarter choices.

Known for its expertise in heating, ventilation,

and air conditioning, Enviro Master is increasingly

working with customers to deliver integrated

home energy solutions — including modern,

energy-efficient hot water systems. With rising

electricity and gas costs, alongside a growing focus

on sustainability, many households are reassessing

older electric and gas hot water systems.

Enviro Master works with homeowners and

businesses to recommend solutions that can

reduce running costs by up to 80 percent while still

delivering reliable performance.

The company says it’s important for customers to

understand that not all hot water heat pumps are

designed to perform effectively during Canterbury’s

colder winter conditions.

“People need to be aware that many hot water

heat pumps on the market don’t operate efficiently

on cold, frosty mornings because of their size and

performance limitations,” Enviro Master says.

Drawing on years of experience in system design

and installation, the team ensures each solution is

matched to the property, household usage demands,

and the customer’s long-term goals.

One of the key advantages of working with

Enviro Master is its independent approach. Much

like its philosophy around heat pumps and air

conditioning systems, the company is not tied to a

single supplier. That means recommendations are

based on performance, efficiency, and overall value

rather than brand loyalty.

Enviro Master’s qualified technicians manage

the entire process — from the initial assessment

through to installation and commissioning —

ensuring every system is set up to operate at peak

efficiency from day one.

With a strong track record in delivering practical,

energy-smart solutions, Enviro Master continues

to support homeowners and businesses in making

informed decisions — not just about heating and

cooling, but about how energy is used throughout

the entire home.

Make the most of

your outdoor space

Do you have outdoor space at home that

barely gets used?

In Canterbury, the weather can change

quickly, brilliant sunshine one minute,

cool winds the next - but that doesn’t

mean your deck, patio, or backyard

should sit unused for much of the year.

At Shades Direct Canterbury, we help

homeowners transform outdoor areas

into stylish, functional extensions of the

home, creating spaces you can enjoy

year-round. It’s like adding another

room to your house, while still enjoying

the outdoors.

Whether you want shade from harsh

UV, protection from the wind, or a

comfortable entertaining area for family

and friends, our custom canopies,

awnings, and outdoor screens are

designed to suit both your home and the

Canterbury climate.

As a proudly local, family-run

business, we understand Christchurch

conditions and offer premium outdoor

systems engineered for both style

and durability. From covering sunny

decks to enclosing patios for all-season

living, every project is tailored to blend

seamlessly with your home.

Summer will be here before you know

it - now is the perfect time to plan your

dream outdoor space.

Top 10

tricks

for

wardrobe

organising

A well-organised wardrobe can do more

than just keep your clothes neat and tidy;

it can also make your daily routine run

more smoothy, save time, and get the

most out of your space.

Whether you’re working with a

compact closet or a walk-in wardrobe,

the key to organisation is the same. So

read on for some top tips to organise and

declutter your wardrobes.

Editing/Decluttering

First and foremost, the ‘editing process’.

It can be hard to organise and store

clothes (or any other items in your

house) when there is too much of them.

Our tastes change, clothes become out

of shape or worn out. Some items can be

given to charity or sold on a peer-to-peer

platform.

Sorting

Second comes the sorting, here there is

no magic trick you just need to start at

one end of your wardrobe and work in a

sequence. Create piles Keep, Store, Give/

Sell, Repair or Rubbish.

Categorise

This is an obvious one but once you have

sorted everything and decided what

type of container/solution works best for

you, categorise the items, i.e. store all

your sport shorts, tops, specialised layer

together, this will make it so much easier

when you head out for an early walk/run

or Pilates class.

Pick a solution that works for you

If you have a small space, I recommend

using containers such as baskets or

specially designed stackable trays, fabric

storage boxes with dividers. It needs to

be a solution that you will be happy to

use and maintain, if you are not the type

to fold your clothes like an origami place

than don’t go with a fancy solution as

this will be hard to upkeep.

Go simply with a few baskets that

can be stored in wardrobes/drawers to

contain smaller items, hang the more

delicate pieces, and roll the t-shirts/

jerseys before storing them in drawers.

It needs to be practical; it doesn’t need to

look like an Insta shoot.

Clothes hangers

Get rid of mix and match hangers and

only have one type, make sure to also

have some with clips for storing skirts

and other shorter items.

Check the quality of the hangers before

you buy them as some of them break

easily so it’s worth paying a little bit

more and have some that will last you

longer.

Take before and after photos

Take a before and after photo of the

space, it’s always a great motivator to

look at it once you are finished.

If you love it, put it where you can

see it

Keep the items you love where you

can see them a daily basis. If there is a

special dress or jersey that you love and

wear on occasions make sure you put

it in a place where you can see it when

you open the wardrobe or drawer, it will

make you happy.

Clothing memento

We all have a special t-shirt, cap or dress

that we keep for sentimental reason,

store it in a special memento box or

vacuum sealed bag so it leaves more

space for items you use often.

Roll those t-shirts

If you have drawers roll your t-shirt,

sporting clothes, jerseys and display

them by category tightly in rows beside

each other. It makes it more appealing

when you open the drawer and easier to

choose in the morning, instead of having

to sort through a pile and having them

all falling out.

Store seasonal items

At the start of the summer just take all

the winter weight clothing out of your

wardrobe (yes that also includes base

layers and ski socks, etc.).

Place the items in a vacuum seal bag

and put the bag away under a bed or

in a storage area in the house. It will

create some space in your wardrobe and

will feel like a refresh. I also put in a

perfumed tumble dryer sheet (they are

available at the supermarket with the

laundry items) in the bag before sealing

so it’s nice and fresh when I open it a few

months later.
