ESP intelligent fire detection – Smart, flexible and
reliable
The ESP (Enhanced System Protocol) range
represents Hochiki’s intelligent addressable
fire detection technology, designed to deliver
high-integrity detection performance alongside
simplified installation and diagnostic capabilities.
By utilising an open digital protocol, the ESP range
provides system designers with flexibility when
specifying fire detection components. The range
includes intelligent detectors, sounders, visual
alarm devices, manual call points and a selection
of input and output interface modules. Each device
communicates directly with the control panel
through an addressable loop, enabling engineers
to configure the system to match the risk profile of
the building.
This flexibility is particularly valuable in
complex environments where occupancy types,
environmental conditions and operational
requirements vary. Offices, manufacturing
facilities, educational campuses and healthcare
environments all present different fire detection
challenges. The ESP platform allows specifiers

advanced cause-and-effect programming and
robust networking capabilities. These features

Latitude’s networking capabilities also allow
multiple control panels to be connected, creating

GFulbright has advised Wolseley
Plumb and Parts (Wolseley) on its
continued operation and trade in
relation to health and safety, and
planning permissions, in the Channel
Island of Jersey.
Wolseley is one of the UK’s leading
merchants in plumbing, heating,

supporting a variety of trades for

The merchant has been trading
from its unit in La Collette for
several years and before taking
occupancy had received assurance
from the Regulation Directorate in
Jersey that they could trade from

Directorate that it was obliged to
apply for planning permission, with
the Health and Safety Inspectorate
advising against this being granted
due to La Collette being a dockland
area with a fuel terminal which they
considered posed a danger to the
public.

health and safety report to the Health
and Safety Inspectorate, as well as
securing the planning permission,
for its trade counter at its La Collette
branch in St Hellier, Jersey.

PFKG & GIRI join forces
The Passive Fire Knowledge
Group (PFKG) and The Get
It Right Initiative (GIRI) have
announced their intention to
work together to improve safety
and construction practices by
sharing knowledge, exchanging
ideas, and promoting each
other’s aims and objectives.
This collaboration brings together
the specialised focus of the PFKG
on passive fire protection with
GIRI’s broader based approach
to improving construction
practices and eliminating
errors. PFKG, established in
2022, is a unique non-for-profit
collaboration comprising
contractors, consultants, and
relevant trade associations. Its
mission is to improve the delivery
of well designed, specified and
installed passive fire protection
by focusing on three key areas:

Formed in 2015, GIRI is a group of
over 100 leading UK construction
industry experts, organisations
and businesses actively
improving productivity, quality,
sustainability and safety in the
construction sector by eliminating
error.
Passive fire protection (PFP),
also sometimes referred to as
‘built-in’ fire protection, are those
components, materials or systems
that integrate with the fabric of
the building.
PFP comprises many different
product and system categories
including structural steel fire
protection, compartment walls
and floors, fire doors, fire resisting
dampers and ductwork, and
fire-stopping (service penetration
seals, linear joint seals, and
cavity barriers). It is a critical fire
element of fire safety in buildings

he capability to safely evacuate
Tpeople from a building in the
event of an interruption to mains
power supply can be a matter of
life or death, so the importance of
emergency lighting should not be
underestimated.
Facilities Managers need to be aware
of legal requirements imposed by
the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety)
Order 2005 and British Standard
BS 5266. It is easy to get bogged
down with the unenvious task of
manually testing emergency lighting,
knowing that if they fail to achieve
the minimum testing requirements of
a monthly functional test and annual
duration test, profound consequences
including fines and potentially
imprisonment, are just around the
corner. Rest assured however, that

Workplace death reduction “no cause for celebration”
The number of people killed in workplace
accidents in the UK’s construction
industry was reduced by nearly
a third last year – but the
Institution of Occupational
Safety and Health (IOSH)
says this “is no cause for
celebration”.
Figures published by the
Health and Safety Executive
(HSE) have revealed that
work-related construction
accidents caused 35 deaths in
2024-25, 16 fewer than the previous
year. The industry still has more deaths
than any others, though its rate of 1.65 fatal
injuries per 100,000 workers is far
lower than the 8.01 in agriculture,
forestry and fishing.
The reduction in deaths
mirrors an overall decline
in workplace fatalities in
the UK, with the number
reducing from 138 to 124, but
IOSH is keen for more to be
done to make people safer at
work.

Free online training to prevent fatal disease among
kitchen worktop workers

LOccupational Hygiene Society, has released a
free online training tool to help anyone working
in the kitchen worktop industry understand and
control the deadly disease which is killing UK
workers.
The resource was developed and co-funded by
the specialist health and safety company www.

input from the Health and Safety Executive’s expert
team.
Over recent months the rapid onset of incurable
lung disease amongst kitchen surface workers has
hit the headlines, with the unusual step of a London
Coroner writing to the UK’s safety regulator, to
demand action and widespread calls for a repeat of
the Australian ban on engineered stone and quartz
worktops.
BOHS, the leading scientific body in the UK for the
prevention of diseases like cancer from the working
environment, provided practical guidance on
controlling the lethal dust caused when cutting and
finishing artificial stone worktops earlier this year.

As part of a company-wide
initiative to reduce chemicals
that could pose a risk to health,
FSi Promat has modified the
formula of its PyroPro HPE fire
stopping sealant to help protect
contractors and installers –
critically, whilst maintaining its
fire performance so the new
formula can be used in the same
applications as before.
A key product in the FSi Promat
range of fire stopping solutions,
PyroPro HPE is a high performing
sealant that is used to reinstate
fire resistance for service
penetrations and is approved
for use around CPVC pipes
(as typically used in sprinkler
systems), plastic pipes, cables &
non-combustible insulated pipes.
In the reformulated sealant,
FSi Promat has successfully
removed a raw material, which
had recently been reclassified as
potentially carcinogenic, whilst
retaining the same level of fire
performance which has been
verified in third-party testing;
so all of its existing certification
remains unchanged.
As a high-pressure expansion
sealant, PyroPro HPE is an
intumescent sealant that can
expand up to 20 times and is
used to reinstate fire resistant
compartments where breaches
have been made to allow for
service penetrations, such as
pipework and cables.
Packaged in cartridges made
from up to 50 percent recycled
plastic, and also in foil packs,
the move to reformulate the
sealant is in line with FSi Promat’s
commitment to make changes
where possible that make their
products less impactful on
the environment and support
improved standards in health
and safety.

London on 22nd November 2024. Each year, the
awards recognise and celebrate the outstanding

dangers of viral cleaning hacks on TikTok that could
lead to toxic gas exposure, explosions, and severe
acid burns.
The latest wave of social media cleaning trends
sees users mixing common household chemicals to
achieve sparkling results, but the reality is far more
sinister. Unknowingly, many are creating highly
volatile reactions that could send them straight to
A&E.
“Some of these so-called ‘cleaning hacks’ are
nothing short of chemical warfare in your own
home,” says Derek Bruce. “Mixing the wrong products
can create lethal gases or even trigger explosions. It’s
a serious risk, and people need to be aware before
blindly following a trend.”
Cleaning products are designed to work effectively
on their own, but when mixed, they can create toxic
chemical reactions. Some of the most dangerous
TikTok trends involve:
s Bleach and Vinegar – Creates chlorine gas,
leading to breathing difficulties, chest pain, and
lung damage.
s Bleach and Ammonia – Produces deadly
chloramine vapours that can cause severe
respiratory issues.
s Baking Soda and Vinegar – While often thought
of as a harmless fizzing reaction, when stored in
a closed container, it can build up pressure and
explode.
s Hydrogen Peroxide and Vinegar – Creates
peracetic acid, which can cause skin burns, eye
damage, and respiratory problems.
The rise of DIY cleaning influencers and viral home
hacks has fuelled dangerous misinformation, with
users unintentionally putting themselves and their
families at risk. Many videos fail to mention the
chemical dangers, instead promoting them as “safe,
budget-friendly solutions”.
