interzum forum italy ahead of its

opening: the furniture and design

supply chain meets in Bergamo

More than 230 exhibitors and international industry leaders will gather at

interzum forum italy on 4–5 June 2026 to discuss the future of furniture

production, sourcing and design technologies.

O

n 4 and 5 June,

companies, designers,

industrial partners,

News

Foam technologies shaping the

future of sleep products

Advanced foam technologies are transforming the global bedding industry with

smarter comfort, cooling performance and sustainable material solutions for

next-generation sleep products.

T

he global bedding

industry is entering

a new era driven by

advanced foam technologies.

From pressure-relieving

memory foams to sustainable

bio-based materials, foam

producers are redefining

comfort, durability and sleep

performance for consumers

worldwide. As mattress

manufacturers compete to

deliver healthier and more

personalized sleep experiences,

foam innovation continues to

stand at the center of product

development strategies.

The demand for highperformance

sleep products

has accelerated investments

in foam engineering during

the past few years. Consumers

are no longer looking only for

soft surfaces; they also expect

cooling performance, body

support, motion isolation and

long-lasting comfort. This

transformation is pushing

manufacturers toward nextgeneration

foam systems

that combine technology,

sustainability and ergonomic

design.

Memory foam continues to

evolve

Memory foam remains one of

the most influential materials in

the bedding sector. Originally

developed for pressure

relief applications, memory

foam technologies now

offer significantly improved

breathability and response

times compared to earlier

generations.

Manufacturers are introducing

open-cell structures that

improve airflow and reduce

heat retention, one of the

most discussed challenges

in traditional memory foam

mattresses. New formulations

also allow foam layers to

recover faster, improving

movement comfort during sleep.

The growing popularity of

hybrid mattresses is also

increasing the use of advanced

foam layers combined with

pocket spring systems. In these

products, foam technologies

help provide contouring comfort

while springs improve airflow

and support balance.

High-density foams continue

to attract premium mattress

manufacturers due to their

durability and long product

life. At the same time, softer

adaptive foams are gaining

popularity in hospitality projects

where luxury comfort has

become a key competitive factor.

Cooling technologies gain

importance

Temperature regulation has

become one of the most

important topics in mattress

development. Consumers

increasingly associate

sleep quality with cooling

performance, especially in

warmer climates and luxury

bedding segments.

Foam manufacturers are

responding with gel-infused

foams, graphite technologies

and phase change materials

designed to dissipate heat

more effectively. Cooling

particles integrated into foam

structures help regulate surface

temperature and improve

sleeping comfort throughout

the night.

Some producers are also

developing ventilated foam

structures with specially

engineered air channels. These

systems improve airflow

inside the mattress and

reduce moisture accumulation,

contributing to healthier

28 / SleepTech • May - June

sleeping environments.

The cooling foam segment is

expected to continue growing

as wellness-focused consumers

prioritize comfort technologies

that support uninterrupted

sleep.

Sustainability reshapes

foam production

Environmental concerns are

reshaping material sourcing

strategies across the global

bedding industry. Foam

manufacturers are increasingly

investing in sustainable

production systems and

renewable raw materials

to meet both regulatory

requirements and consumer

expectations.

Bio-based foams derived from

plant oils are gaining attention

as alternatives to petroleumbased

materials. Although

traditional polyurethane foams

still dominate the market, biocontent

solutions are becoming

more common in premium and

environmentally conscious

product collections.

Recycling technologies are

also improving rapidly. Some

manufacturers are introducing

foam recovery systems

that allow production waste

to be reused in secondary

applications. Circular economy

practices are becoming

more important, especially

in European markets where

sustainability regulations

continue to tighten.

Certifications related to

emissions and material safety

are also influencing purchasing

decisions. Mattress producers

increasingly highlight

environmentally friendly

foam solutions as part of

their branding and marketing

strategies.

Smart manufacturing

improves foam quality

Automation and digital

monitoring systems are

transforming foam production

facilities worldwide. Advanced

cutting technologies, robotic

handling systems and AIsupported

quality control

solutions help manufacturers

improve precision and

production efficiency.

Modern foam plants now use

digital monitoring systems to

analyze density consistency,

structural integrity and material

performance in real time. These

technologies reduce production

errors while improving overall

product quality.

Computer-controlled cutting

systems also allow mattress

manufacturers to create

more complex comfort zones

and customized designs. As

personalization becomes more

important in the bedding sector,

foam processing technologies

are expected to become even

more sophisticated.

Global demand supports

future investments

The global mattress industry

continues to grow steadily,

supporting new investments

in foam technologies. Rising

consumer awareness regarding

sleep health, increasing

urbanization and the expansion

of premium bedding markets

are creating new business

opportunities for foam

suppliers worldwide.

Hospitality, healthcare and

smart bedding applications

are also generating additional

demand for specialized foam

solutions. Pressure-relieving

foams for medical mattresses

and ergonomic comfort

systems for adjustable beds

are among the fastest-growing

segments.

Industry experts expect

future developments to focus

on sustainability, cooling

performance and sensorintegrated

foam structures

compatible with smart sleep

technologies. As the market

evolves, foam innovation will

remain one of the key drivers

shaping the future of sleep

products industry worldwide.
