ISRAEL AT 78: THE GROWING CALL TO

REBUILD THE THIRD TEMPLE

7 | P a g e

The banners waving through Jerusalem this year were not only

blue-and-white Israeli flags. During the recent Jerusalem Day

celebrations, another symbol appeared again and again among

crowds marching through the Old City: IMAGES OF A FUTURE

THIRD TEMPLE STANDING UPON THE TEMPLE MOUNT. For

some, it was political theater. For others, it was a declaration of

destiny.

8 | P a g e

The timing felt significant to many Israelis. This year marked

Israel's 78th birthday as a modern state -- a milestone many

religious Jews increasingly connect to what they see as the

gradual restoration of biblical Israel after nearly 2,000 years of

exile. To them, the rebirth of the nation in 1948 was never the

end of the story. Jerusalem's reunification in 1967 was another

step. And now, GROWING NUMBERS BELIEVE THE NEXT PHASE

MAY CENTER AROUND THE TEMPLE MOUNT ITSELF.

What was once considered a fringe religious aspiration inside

Israel is steadily moving closer to the mainstream. THE IDEA OF

REBUILDING A THIRD TEMPLE IN JERUSALEM -- ON THE VERY

SITE WHERE THE FIRST AND SECOND TEMPLES ONCE STOOD --

IS NO LONGER CONFINED TO OBSCURE ACTIVIST CIRCLES. IT IS

NOW OPENLY DISCUSSED BY RABBIS, POLITICIANS, MEMBERS

OF THE MILITARY, AND GROWING SEGMENTS OF ISRAELI

SOCIETY STILL REELING FROM THE TRAUMA OF OCTOBER 7.

And for Christians who study Bible prophecy, those

developments are impossible to ignore.

During Jerusalem Day events, ISRAELI NATIONAL SECURITY

MINISTER ITAMAR BEN-GVIR MADE HEADLINES ONCE AGAIN

AFTER ASCENDING THE TEMPLE MOUNT AND DECLARING THAT

ISRAEL HAD "RESTORED SOVEREIGNTY" OVER THE SITE. He

celebrated what he described as increased Israeli control and

9 | P a g e

praised stronger security measures that, in his words, produced

one of the quietest Ramadan periods in years.

His words were not accidental.

THE TEMPLE MOUNT REMAINS THE SINGLE MOST EXPLOSIVE

RELIGIOUS SITE ON EARTH. JEWS REGARD IT AS THE LOCATION

OF THE FIRST AND SECOND TEMPLES. MUSLIMS REVERE IT AS

THE SITE OF THE DOME OF THE ROCK AND AL-AQSA MOSQUE.

Since Israel captured the Old City during the 1967 Six-Day War, a

fragile arrangement has remained in place in which Israel

controls security while the Jordanian-backed Islamic Waqf

oversees daily administration.

But men like BEN-GVIR INCREASINGLY ARGUE THAT

ARRANGEMENT SHOULD END.

His decision to raise the Israeli flag on the mount during

Jerusalem Day celebrations sent a message not only to Israelis,

but to the entire Middle East: THERE IS A GROWING MOVEMENT

INSIDE ISRAEL THAT NO LONGER WISHES TO MERELY VISIT THE

TEMPLE MOUNT -- IT WANTS TO RECLAIM IT.

That movement has been growing for years.

Organizations like the Temple Institute have spent decades

preparing for the possibility of a future temple. Temple vessels

have been recreated. Priestly garments have been sewn. Training

for ritual practices has resumed. Even discussions surrounding

10 | P a g e

red heifers and purification rituals -- once dismissed as symbolic

religious curiosities -- are now taken seriously by many observant

Jews.

The preparations go even further. The Temple Institute has also

completed a massive golden menorah intended for a future

temple and placed it on public display overlooking the Western

Wall. The organization has also worked extensively on training

men believed to be descendants of the biblical priesthood for

future temple service and has even DEVELOPED

ARCHITECTURAL PLANS AND EDUCATIONAL MODELS

ENVISIONING HOW A THIRD TEMPLE COULD FUNCTION IN

MODERN JERUSALEM. What once sounded symbolic

increasingly appears methodical and deliberate.

The movement no longer feels theoretical.

October 7 changed Israel profoundly. The Hamas massacre

shattered assumptions about SECURITY, PEACE, AND

COEXISTENCE. In its aftermath, many secular Israelis have

reportedly begun revisiting faith, identity, and biblical history. In

moments of national trauma, nations often return to their

spiritual roots. Israel appears to be no exception.

That spiritual awakening is becoming visible inside the IDF itself.

Religious expression among soldiers has surged, particularly

among younger troops shaped by war and loss. Yet that trend has

also sparked conflict with Israel's secular establishment.

11 | P a g e

Recently, controversy erupted after AN ISRAELI SOLDIER

REPORTEDLY FACED PUNISHMENT FOR DISPLAYING A

"MOSHIACH" -- MESSIAH -- PATCH ON HIS UNIFORM. OTHERS

HAVE BEEN PHOTOGRAPHED WEARING PATCHES DEPICTING

THE FUTURE TEMPLE ALONGSIDE THE WORDS, "SOON IN OUR

DAYS."

The reaction from military leadership exposed a growing tension

within Israeli society.

The wording of the reprimand disturbed many religious Israelis.

Israel's founding vision openly referenced the "redemption of

Israel," yet soldiers expressing messianic Jewish hope can

reportedly face severe punishment, while Hamas openly frames

its war in explicitly religious terms. Hamas even uses the Dome

of the Rock -- built atop the ruins of the ancient Jewish Temple -

- as a central emblem of its movement.

To many religious Israelis, the contradiction feels glaring.

And now some rabbis are pushing for tangible action.

Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu recently called on Prime Minister Benjamin

Netanyahu and Israeli leadership to establish a synagogue

directly on the Temple Mount as a first step toward expanded

Jewish worship there. Speaking opposite the mount during

Jerusalem Day events, Eliyahu declared that the Islamic

structures currently standing there are tied to Israel's exile and

12 | P a g e

INSISTED THAT A FUTURE JEWISH TEMPLE WILL ONE DAY RISE

AGAIN.

"In the meantime, until the Temple is built, there needs to be a

synagogue here," he said. "Now the Muslims already understand

that it is not theirs; we need to take hold."

Those are extraordinary words.

FOR MANY JEWS, THE TEMPLE REPRESENTS FAR MORE THAN A

BUILDING. IT SYMBOLIZES RESTORATION, COVENANT,

NATIONAL REDEMPTION, AND ISRAEL FULFILLING ITS CALLING

TO BECOME A LIGHT TO THE NATIONS. IN JEWISH THOUGHT,

THE TEMPLE IS TIED DEEPLY TO THE SPIRITUAL DESTINY OF

ISRAEL ITSELF.

But while many Jews view these developments with hope, many

Christians view them with profound caution.

FOR GENERATIONS, PROPHECY-MINDED CHRISTIANS HAVE

BELIEVED A FUTURE JEWISH TEMPLE WOULD EVENTUALLY PLAY

A CENTRAL ROLE IN END-TIMES EVENTS FORETOLD IN

SCRIPTURE. PASSAGES IN BOOKS LIKE DANIEL, MATTHEW, AND

2 THESSALONIANS HAVE LONG BEEN INTERPRETED BY MANY

CHRISTIANS AS POINTING TOWARD A FUTURE WORLD LEADER

-- THE ANTICHRIST -- WHO WILL ENTER A REBUILT TEMPLE,

DECLARE HIMSELF DIVINE, AND DEMAND WORSHIP.

13 | P a g e

To Christians holding that view, every new discussion

surrounding Temple Mount sovereignty carries spiritual weight

far beyond politics.

That creates a strange and emotional divide between Jewish and

Christian perspectives. Many Christians deeply support Israel,

defend its right to exist, and mourn the hatred directed against

the Jewish people. Yet at the same time, they realize what a

rebuilt temple may ultimately foreshadow prophetically.

And perhaps that is what makes the current moment so

significant.

The Third Temple is no longer merely the subject of prophecy

conferences or theological speculation. IT IS INCREASINGLY

ENTERING POLITICAL DISCOURSE, MILITARY CULTURE,

NATIONAL IDENTITY, AND PUBLIC ACTIVISM WITHIN ISRAEL

ITSELF.

What once sounded impossible is now openly discussed in the

streets of Jerusalem.

The flags waving during Jerusalem Day were not just symbols of

nationalism. For many marching beneath them, they

represented a belief that history itself is moving toward

fulfillment -- and that the mountain at the center of Jerusalem

may soon stand at the center of the world once again.

DANIEL: THE END TIMES

2 MULTITUDES WHO SLEEP IN THE DUST OF THE EARTH WILL

the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to

5 Then I, Daniel, looked, and there before me stood two others,

one on this bank of the river and one on the opposite

bank. 6 One of them said to the man clothed in linen, who was

above the waters of the river, “HOW LONG WILL IT BE BEFORE

THESE ASTONISHING THINGS ARE FULFILLED?”

7 The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the

river, lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and

I heard him swear by him who lives forever, saying, “IT WILL BE

FOR A TIME, TIMES AND HALF A TIME (FINAL 3.5 YEARS, OR 42

MONTHS OF THE GREAT TRIBULATION). When the power of the

holy people has been finally broken, ALL THESE THINGS WILL BE

COMPLETED.”

8 I heard, but I did not understand. So I asked, “My lord, what

will the outcome of all this be?”

A SHOCKING NEW CHANGE ON THE

TEMPLE MOUNT IS SENDING PROPHETIC

SHOCKWAVES ACROSS THE WORLD

110 | P a g e

A growing shift on the Temple Mount is sending shockwaves

through the prophetic world as expanded Jewish prayer

permissions at the holy site accelerate the restoration of worship

in Jerusalem and move biblical prophecy closer to fulfillment.

As reported by Israel National News, THE TEMPLE MOUNT

YESHIVA ANNOUNCED THAT ISRAELI AUTHORITIES HAD

APPROVED EXPANDED PRAYER SHEETS CONTAINING “THE

SPECIAL AND DEDICATED PRAYER LITURGY FOR THE TEMPLE

MOUNT,” MARKING ANOTHER MAJOR STEP TOWARD THE

RESTORATION OF JEWISH WORSHIP AT THE SITE.

“The Temple Mount is gradually returning to being a place of

prayer and prostration,” Rabbi Elisha Wolfson said. “The ability

to pray from prayer sheets broadens the heart, inspires

reverence for the Temple, and brings great joy.”

111 | P a g e

The yeshiva also thanked Itamar Ben Gvir and Israeli officials “for

their many efforts, and for the privilege of taking part in the

process of restoring the Divine Presence to Zion.”

Scripture reveals a consistent pattern throughout Israel’s history:

REPENTANCE, PRAYER AND RESTORED WORSHIP LEAD TO

NATIONAL RESTORATION AND MAJOR PROPHETIC EVENTS.

Under Hezekiah, temple worship returned, and the nation was

revived. Under Josiah, the rediscovery of God’s law brought

repentance and renewal. After the Babylonian exile, Ezra and

Nehemiah led Israel back to God before Jerusalem and the

Temple were restored.

THAT SAME PATTERN IS UNFOLDING AGAIN.

The rebirth of Israel in 1948 restored the nation. The

reunification of Jerusalem in 1967 restored Jewish control of the

holy city. EXPANDING JEWISH PRAYER RIGHTS ON THE TEMPLE

MOUNT NOW CONTINUES THE RESTORATION

PROCESS SCRIPTURE PROPHESIED THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO.

Jesus warned in Matthew 24 about THE COMING

“ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION” SPOKEN OF BY DANIEL, A

PROPHECY REQUIRING A FUNCTIONING TEMPLE IN JERUSALEM

DURING THE LAST DAYS. The apostle Paul wrote in 2

Thessalonians that THE MAN OF SIN WILL SIT IN THE TEMPLE OF

GOD, DECLARING HIMSELF TO BE GOD. THOSE PROPHECIES

112 | P a g e

POINT DIRECTLY TO A RESTORED TEMPLE SYSTEM IN

JERUSALEM.

Every movement surrounding the Temple Mount carries

prophetic significance because Jerusalem stands at the center of

God’s prophetic timeline.

The Bible also reveals that restoration comes alongside shaking.

Zechariah prophesied that Jerusalem would become “a

burdensome stone for all people.” Ezekiel foresaw massive

conflict surrounding Israel in the last days. Revelation describes

a world moving toward unprecedented upheaval before the

return of Jesus Christ.

The restoration of worship on the Temple Mount points directly

toward earth-shattering events ahead. The nations are moving

toward confrontation over Jerusalem exactly as Scripture says

they will.

What began as approval for expanded prayer sheets is part of

something far larger. The prophetic stage is being set in real time.

ISRAEL ADVANCES PLAN TO SEIZE

PALESTINIAN PROPERTY NEAR AL-AQSA

MOSQUE

New committee to implement historic confiscation orders in

Jerusalem’s Old City as Palestinians warn of efforts to ‘Judaise’

the area

115 | P a g e

The Israeli government has advanced plans to confiscate

Palestinian-owned property near Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s

Old City, in a move Palestinians say is aimed at “Judaising” the

city.

On Sunday, ministers approved the creation of an interministerial

team to examine the implementation of historic

expropriation orders in the area around Chain Gate (Bab al-Silsila

in Arabic), a main route leading directly to Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Israeli officials and Hebrew media described the move as part of

efforts to strengthen Israeli sovereignty in the Old City and secure

routes linking Jaffa Gate, the Jewish Quarter and the Western

Wall.

According to Israeli reports, officials also presented the decision

as completing state ownership over properties confiscated after

Israel’s 1967 occupation of East Jerusalem.

Government documents repeatedly refer to the

“implementation” of historic confiscation orders in the Old City,

saying the new committee will examine the legal and planning

obstacles that delayed the process for decades.

The orders could affect between 15 and 20 Palestinian-owned

homes and shops, according to the Jerusalem municipality.

The Chain Gate road cuts through one of the most crowded and

sensitive areas of the Old City.

116 | P a g e

The narrow stone route leads to the western gates of Al-Aqsa

Mosque and is lined with historic Islamic schools, centuries-old

buildings from the Mamluk and Ottoman eras, shops and small

restaurants, according to Sheikh Ekrima Sabri, imam of Al-Aqsa

Mosque.

Sabri said many of the targeted buildings are linked to Islamic

waqf properties and historic institutions surrounding the

mosque complex.

“Every measure carried out by the occupation serves the project

of changing Jerusalem’s identity,” he told Middle East Eye,

describing the move as “another attempt to Judaise the city”.

The decision comes amid growing tensions in occupied East

Jerusalem and mounting Palestinian fears of accelerated Israeli

measures in the Old City during the genocide in Gaza and wider

regional escalation.

Palestinian officials and activists say international attention

elsewhere has reduced scrutiny of developments in Jerusalem.

‘RESHAPING THE AREA’

According to Jerusalem affairs expert Khalil Tawfikji, many of the

targeted properties were first confiscated shortly after Israel

occupied East Jerusalem in 1967 under laws relating to “public

benefit”.

117 | P a g e

He said the legal mechanism, typically used for schools, hospitals

and public infrastructure, was instead employed to transfer large

parts of the Old City into state ownership.

“These properties were confiscated in the name of public

benefit, but the public they meant was the Israeli public,” Tawfikji

told MEE.

“Not the Palestinian, Muslim, or Christian public.”

Many Palestinian families in the area were gradually displaced in

the decades following the occupation, leaving only a small

number of Palestinian residents in parts of the Bab al-Silsila area

today.

For Tawfikji, the key question is timing.

118 | P a g e

He argues Israel is exploiting the current regional and

international climate to consolidate control over one of the Old

City’s most strategic areas.

The upper floors of some buildings are already occupied by

Israeli settlers, he said, while Palestinian-owned shops continue

operating below.

“This is about reshaping the area,” Tawfikji said. “Whoever

controls the Old City controls the narrative presented to the

world.”

He added that Bab al-Silsila is significant not only because it leads

to the Western Wall and Al-Aqsa Mosque, but also because of its

proximity to the Christian pilgrimage route known as the Via

Dolorosa, or Darb al-Alam in Arabic.

“THE OLD CITY IS WHERE THE THREE RELIGIONS MEET,” HE

SAID. “FOR CHRISTIANS, THERE IS THE WAY OF SORROWS; FOR

MUSLIMS, AL-AQSA MOSQUE; AND FOR JEWS, THE WESTERN

WALL. CONTROLLING THIS SPACE MEANS CONTROLLING THE

IMAGE OF JERUSALEM BEFORE THE WORLD.”

The government proposal also calls for what it describes as “a

continuous urban space”, linking different parts of the Jewish

Quarter and routes leading to the Western Wall.

119 | P a g e

Sabri said ISLAMIC OFFICIALS AND PALESTINIAN INSTITUTIONS

ARE TRYING TO BLOCK THE MOVE THROUGH LEGAL AND

DIPLOMATIC CHANNELS.

HE SAID THEY ARE IN CONTACT WITH SEVERAL PARTIES,

INCLUDING JORDANIAN OFFICIALS LINKED TO THE ISLAMIC

WAQF IN JERUSALEM.

“THERE ARE POLITICAL AND DIPLOMATIC EFFORTS TAKING

PLACE,” SABRI TOLD MEE.

BUT FOR MANY PALESTINIANS IN JERUSALEM, THE CONCERN

EXTENDS BEYOND THE BUILDINGS THEMSELVES TO THE

CONTINUED EROSION OF THE PALESTINIAN PRESENCE AROUND

AL-AQSA AND WITHIN THE OLD CITY.

THE INTER-MINISTERIAL TEAM IS EXPECTED TO SUBMIT

RECOMMENDATIONS IN THE COMING MONTHS ON HOW TO

IMPLEMENT THE HISTORIC CONFISCATION ORDERS.

ISRAELI MP CALLS FOR AL-AQSA’S

DESTRUCTION TO BUILD JEWISH TEMPLE

DURING MASS RAID

Ministers and lawmakers lead large settler incursions into the

Jerusalem site ahead of the provocative Flag March, as Israeli

forces restrict Palestinians access

Gvir (C) as he holds an Israeli flag during a raid into Al-Aqsa

Gvir's Office/Handout via Reuters)

122 | P a g e

Israeli ministers and MPs led mass incursions into Al-Aqsa

Mosque on Thursday, as one lawmaker declared it was time to

demolish the site and build a Jewish temple in its place.

The raids came as Israeli forces violently

blocked Palestinian worshippers from accessing the Jerusalem

holy site while facilitating large-scale settler raids ahead of the

annual “Flag March” through the Old City.

The Old City, in occupied East Jerusalem, was placed under neartotal

lockdown to accommodate the marches and incursions,

with Palestinian-owned shops forced to shut and residents

ordered indoors.

“Security barriers and restrictions are tighter than ever before,”

an employee of the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf, which administers

Al-Aqsa Mosque, told Middle East Eye on condition of anonymity.

Since dawn prayers, Israeli authorities have imposed strict

measures at the gates of Al-Aqsa Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest

sites.

Israeli forces searched worshippers attempting to reach the site,

confiscated ID cards, and barred men under 60 and women

under 50 from entering.

Local sources told MEE that worshippers were assaulted, shoved

and beaten at several mosque gates.

123 | P a g e

Shortly after dawn prayers ended, the mosque was largely

emptied of Palestinians, except for a small number of Waqf staff.

Large groups of ultranationalist Israelis then raided the site under

heavy police protection.

At least 800 Israelis entered the site during the morning, with

further groups expected later in the day.

During the incursions, participants performed religious rituals

and prayers and raised Israeli flags inside the mosque compound,

including National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and other

lawmakers.

“We restored governance on the Temple Mount thanks to

determination and deterrence," Ben Gvir said. "The Temple

Mount is in our hands."

Yitzhak Kroizer, am MP from the same party, stood alongside Ben

Gvir as they danced and sang next to the Dome of the Rock.

“THE TIME HAS COME TO GET RID OF ALL THE MOSQUES AND

WORK TO CONSTRUCT THE TEMPLE!” Kroizer later wrote on

Facebook.

Yitzhak Wasserlauf, another minister, said "Jews no longer walk

around the Temple Mount like thieves and no longer need to

hide" during the raid.

124 | P a g e

Among those taking part in the raids was Ariel Kallner, a

lawmaker from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud

party.

AL-AQSA MOSQUE IS ONE OF ISLAM’S HOLIEST SITES AND SITS

ON A PLATEAU THAT ISRAELIS REFER TO AS THE TEMPLE

MOUNT, WHICH, IN JEWISH TRADITION, IS BELIEVED TO HAVE

BEEN THE SITE OF THE FIRST AND SECOND TEMPLES.

A centuries-old status quo, recognised internationally,

designates Al-Aqsa as an exclusively Muslim place of worship

under the administration of the Islamic Waqf, which has

authority over access, prayer and maintenance.

Israel has increasingly eroded the arrangement by allowing neardaily

settler incursions and public Jewish prayers at the site, while

sidelining the Waqf’s authority and heavily restricting Muslim

access to the mosque.

Friday raids

The large-scale raids come as Israel marks “Jerusalem Day”,

which commemorates the occupation of East Jerusalem in 1967

and its subsequent “unification” with West Jerusalem, seized by

Zionist militia during the 1948 Nakba.

Alongside the incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque, Jerusalem Day

celebrations include the controversial “Flag March”, which

125 | P a g e

passes through the Old City, including Palestinian-majority

neighbourhoods.

The march has frequently been marked by racist and

Islamophobic chants, assaults on Palestinian residents, and

attacks on Palestinian property.

This year’s Jerusalem Day events begin at sunset on Thursday

and end at nightfall on Friday, coinciding with Nakba Day, which

commemorates the ethnic cleansing of more than 750,000

Palestinians by Zionist militia during the creation of the state of

Israel in 1948.

The overlap also falls on a Friday, when Israeli incursions into Al-

Aqsa are typically suspended because of Muslim Friday prayers.

However, several ministers and MPs from Israel’s governing

coalition have appealed to the police commissioner to allow

Israeli groups to enter the mosque’s yards on Friday.

“It is unacceptable that on the day marking the liberation of

Jerusalem and the Temple Mount, Jews will be completely

denied access to the holiest site for the Jewish people,” they

wrote in a letter signed by senior ministers, including Justice

Minister Yariv Levin, Defense Minister Israel Katz and Energy

Minister Eli Cohen.

126 | P a g e

A Jerusalem resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, said

there were genuine fears the raids would proceed on Friday,

further entrenching Israeli control over the site.

Ir Amim, an Israeli rights group focused on

Jerusalem, condemned what it described as growing official

backing for the Temple movement among organisers and

participants in the Flag March.

THE TEMPLE MOVEMENT INCLUDES GROUPS ORGANISING

DAILY INCURSIONS INTO AL-AQSA, WHICH ALSO CALL OPENLY

FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF THE MOSQUE AND THE

CONSTRUCTION OF A THIRD TEMPLE IN ITS PLACE.

“Against the backdrop of the sweeping government support they

now enjoy, Temple activists may in the coming days attempt to

forcibly enter the complex, damage Muslim holy sites, or carry

out attacks against Palestinians in and around the area,” Ir Amim

warned on Wednesday.

“When the police – who are meant to uphold public order –

openly declare their support for the Temple movement, there is

little left to restrain those groups from acting in such a manner.”

WITH AL-AQSA MOSQUE EFFECTIVELY DIVIDED BETWEEN

MUSLIMS AND JEWS, PALESTINIANS FEAR ISRAEL'S NEXT MOVE

Jewish prayers recited loudly in groups. Singing and dancing.

Men prostrating themselves, faces pressed to the

ground. Israeli flags held aloft.

THAT WAS THE SCENE INSIDE AL-AQSA MOSQUE, ONE OF

ISLAM’S HOLIEST SITES, DURING AN ISRAELI RAID EARLIER THIS

MONTH.

A few years ago, such a display would have been

unimaginable. But since 7 October 2023, everything has

changed, say Palestinians.

"There were terrifying numbers of people [Israeli settlers]

present and some were important figures," Aouni Bazbaz, the

director of international affairs at the Islamic Waqf, the

organisation that administers Al-Aqsa Mosque, told Middle East

Eye at the time.

"WHAT HAPPENED… REPRESENTS A PIVOTAL STAGE AIMED AT

FORCIBLY IMPOSING JEWISH SOVEREIGNTY OVER AL-AQSA

MOSQUE AND DIVIDING IT SPATIALLY BETWEEN MUSLIMS AND

SETTLERS,” he added.

AL-AQSA MOSQUE, LOCATED IN THE OLD CITY OF JERUSALEM,

HAS STOOD AT THE CENTRE OF ISRAEL’S DECADES-

LONG OCCUPATION OF PALESTINE.

130 | P a g e

FOR PALESTINIANS AND MUSLIMS WORLDWIDE, THE MOSQUE

SYMBOLISES THE STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM, IDENTITY AND

INDEPENDENCE.

FOR MANY ISRAELIS, IT IS THE SITE WHERE THE THIRD JEWISH

TEMPLE IS SOON TO RISE.

FOR DECADES, IT HAS BEEN GOVERNED BY AN INTERNATIONAL

ARRANGEMENT UPHOLDING ITS RELIGIOUS STATUS AS AN

EXCLUSIVELY ISLAMIC SHRINE.

BUT SINCE THE OCCUPATION OF EAST JERUSALEM IN 1967,

ISRAELIS HAVE BEEN GRADUALLY ERODING THAT STATUS

THROUGH INCREASING RESTRICTIONS ON PALESTINIAN AND

MUSLIM ACCESS, WHILE EXPANDING JEWISH PRESENCE AND

CONTROL.

131 | P a g e

SINCE 7 OCTOBER, THESE EFFORTS HAVE INTENSIFIED

DRAMATICALLY.

Today, as global attention remains fixed on Israel’s genocide in

Gaza and broader regional tensions, AL-AQSA STANDS AT A

TURNING POINT.

MANY PALESTINIANS FEAR IT IS ON THE BRINK OF LOSING ITS

IDENTITY AS A MOSQUE AND BEING TURNED INTO WHAT THEY

HAVE LONG DREADED: A THIRD JEWISH TEMPLE.

Erosion of the status quo

In the late 19th century, the Ottoman Empire, which ruled over

Palestine at the time, established an arrangement governing the

management of religious sites in Jerusalem.

This agreement became known as the status quo, a set of rules

and regulations now considered a binding international norm,

which has long been accepted by world powers.

The arrangement stipulated that the entire 144,000-squaremetre

Al-Aqsa Mosque complex - including the Dome of the

Rock, the silver-domed Qibli Mosque, and other buildings and

gates - fall under Muslim administration.

For decades, this administration has been known as the Islamic

Waqf, or religious endowment, which falls under the Jordanian

custodianship of the site.

132 | P a g e

The rules are simple: only Muslims are allowed to pray inside the

mosque, while non-Muslims may visit, but the Waqf decides

when and how.

Control over the mosque, including its maintenance, security and

excavations, remains the sole responsibility of the Waqf.

This authority, and by extension that of Amman, was formally

recognised by Israel in the peace treaty signed with Jordan in

1994.

During Israel's occupation of Jerusalem, up until 2000, breaches

of the status quo were few and far between, as Israeli authorities

feared global Muslim backlash in the event of any assault on the

mosque.

However, a raid by then-opposition leader Ariel Sharon on the

mosque in 2000, accompanied by hundreds of armed guards,

dramatically shifted the situation.

The raid sparked the Second Intifada, a Palestinian uprising, and

from that point, Israeli authorities began to violate the status quo

on a much larger scale.

First, Israeli forces started regularly deploying inside the mosque

courtyards and at its gates, instituting restrictions on who was

allowed to enter, such as banning men under 40 and Palestinians

from Gaza and the West Bank.

133 | P a g e

At the same time, Israeli authorities stripped the Waqf of its

authority to control visits, opening the door for what Palestinians

describe as raids by ultranationalist Israelis, often carried out

under the protection of heavily armed guards.

THESE RAIDS ARE ORGANISED BY GROUPS KNOWN AS TEMPLE

MOUNT ACTIVISTS, WHICH CONSIST OF ISRAELI

ORGANISATIONS CALLING FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF AL-AQSA

MOSQUE AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF A THIRD TEMPLE IN ITS

PLACE.

Additionally, since 2000, Israel has openly conducted excavations

under Al-Aqsa Mosque, another significant violation of the status

quo.

New normal

For the next two decades, Israel entrenched these new

violations, transforming them into a new reality.

Initially, Israeli settler raids were limited in both number and

duration. However, over the years, they grew steadily in scale and

frequency.

In 2009, more than 5,000 settlers participated in these raids. By

2019, that number had risen to 30,000.

By 2017, the raids became a daily occurrence, excluding Fridays

and Saturdays, following a strict schedule akin to THE FIVE DAILY

MUSLIM PRAYERS.

One shift takes place in the morning, after the Muslim dawn

(Fajr) prayer, with another in the afternoon, following the Muslim

noon (Dhuhr) prayer.

THIS GRADUAL BUT FIRM CONTROL OVER VISITATION TIMES

AND ACCESS IS WHAT PALESTINIANS HAVE LONG WARNED WAS

THE ULTIMATE GOAL.

THEY ARGUE THAT ISRAELI AUTHORITIES ARE CREATING A NEW

REALITY, TURNING THE MOSQUE - A SITE CONSIDERED SOLELY

ISLAMIC - INTO A SHARED SPACE FOR BOTH MUSLIM AND

JEWISH PRAYER.

AS A RESULT, THESE NUMEROUS VIOLATIONS HAVE SPARKED

REGULAR PALESTINIAN POPULAR AND ARMED RESISTANCE

WITHIN JERUSALEM AND BEYOND.

In May 2021, Israeli incursions into the mosque during the

Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which disrupted special Islamic

rituals, were a major catalyst for the 11-day uprising that spread

across historic Palestine, including a war with Hamas in Gaza.

Two years later, the Palestinian movement cited these violations

as one of the primary reasons behind its 7 October attack, which

it called the "Flood of Al-Aqsa". During the assault, Palestinian

fighters killed nearly 1,200 Israelis and took 251 more captive.

141 | P a g e

This led to the ongoing Israeli genocide in Gaza, in which Israeli

forces have killed more than 62,000 Palestinians and left the

besieged enclave in ruins and on the verge of famine.

The escalation has had a domino effect, leading to devastating

Israeli assaults in the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria and Iran.

Under the guise of these increasing regional tensions, the

violations at Al-Aqsa have continued unabated.

They have only worsened, with diminishing international

attention or response.

Escalation

On 13 October 2023, the first Friday after the Hamas-led attack,

Israel banned anyone under the age of 60 from entering Al-Aqsa

Mosque.

Hundreds of Israeli officers were deployed throughout the Old

City and at the mosque’s entrances.

Outside, Israeli forces violently cracked down on anyone

attempting to approach the mosque, forcing thousands to pray

in the surrounding streets.

The Beyadenu Temple Mount Movement, a leading Temple

Mount group, threatened to prevent Muslims from reaching the

site.

142 | P a g e

Other far-right groups put the mosque’s imam on a Telegram hit

list. That day set the tone for what was to come.

An Israeli soldier watches Palestinians perform Friday prayers in

occupied East Jerusalem after they were banned from reaching

Al-Aqsa Mosque

SINCE THEN, ISRAELI AUTHORITIES AND TEMPLE MOUNT

GROUPS HAVE INTENSIFIED EFFORTS TO TIGHTEN CONTROL

OVER AL-AQSA MOSQUE. A key element of this strategy has

been restricting Palestinian access. These restrictions include

ongoing bans and limitations on Palestinians from the West Bank

and the Gaza Strip.

143 | P a g e

In many cases, men under the age of 50 are also denied entry.

In addition, Israeli forces issue dozens of individual bans each

year targeting Palestinians from Jerusalem or within Israel itself.

These bans affect a wide range of people, including imams,

journalists, activists and ordinary worshippers.

The mosque, which once accommodated hundreds of thousands

of worshippers and regularly welcomed tens of thousands for

Friday prayers, now sees only a few thousand on Fridays and

merely hundreds on daily prayers.

Public prayers

Meanwhile, Israeli raids have grown in scale, attracting over

57,000 people in 2024, nearly double the number from five years

earlier. The goal, according to Beyadenu, is to reach 100,000

annual participants.

The duration of each raid has also increased in recent months,

allowing a large number of settlers to participate.

However, one of the most concerning developments in recent

months has been the open and public performance of Jewish

prayers during these raids.

While such prayers - another violation of the status quo - were

previously performed silently and individually by some

ultranationalists, any loud displays were typically met with a

144 | P a g e

strict police response, out of concern for Palestinian and Muslim

backlash.

But in April 2024, it was revealed that Itamar Ben Gvir, the

national security minister who oversees Israeli police in

Jerusalem, had implemented a policy to change the Status Quo

by allowing Jewish prayers inside the mosque without

interruption.

In June, Temple Mount activists said that Ben Gvir told them that

"from now on, his policy is to allow singing and dancing

throughout the Temple Mount".

A Ynet article said that police are changing the status quo by

enforcing a "more Jewish worshippers, less enforcement" policy

there.

BEN GVIR HIMSELF LED HUNDREDS OF SETTLERS IN STORMING

AL-AQSA MOSQUE COMPLEX EARLIER THIS MONTH, WHERE

THEY LOUDLY PERFORMED JEWISH PRAYERS.

The raids now regularly feature scenes of Israelis performing

Jewish prayers, including prostration, reading from the Torah,

singing loudly and raising the Israeli flag.

"I remember times when anyone who moved his lips would be

arrested," Yehudah Glick, a leading Temple Mount activist and a

former Likud MP, told MEE.

145 | P a g e

"I remember the days when we were just a few, today we have

grown," he added.

More recently, a troubling new trend has emerged, according to

a senior source within the Waqf, who spoke on condition of

anonymity.

THIS TREND INVOLVES GROUP PRAYERS AND SERMONS LED BY

RABBI SHIMSHON ELBAUM, HEAD OF THE SO-CALLED TEMPLE

MOUNT ADMINISTRATION.

Sovereignty

Then, in June, Israel took an unprecedented step: Al-Aqsa

Mosque was completely shut down for several days.

The reason cited was Israel’s war on Iran.

However, Israel had never taken such a measure even during

more volatile periods in the past, suggesting there was more

behind the move.

According to Palestinians, the real aim was to assert Israeli

“sovereignty” over the mosque, demonstrating that it can open

and close it at will.

This effort has also been reflected in smaller but consistent

actions designed to erode the Waqf’s role and authority.

146 | P a g e

The senior Waqf official who spoke to MEE said Israel does not

allow the Waqf to hire staff or carry out any maintenance inside

the mosque without prior approval.

On one occasion, he said, a pipe burst in his office, but he was

not permitted to bring in a technician to fix it for two months. As

a result, he received a water bill for 50,000 shekels (roughly

$14,700) for a problem that could have been fixed with a $3 part.

Even bringing in soap or toilet valves requires prior authorisation,

he added.

"I can’t fix the windows or address any issues in the offices. I can’t

even clean the drains before winter. Everything requires a

permit, and all they say is: submit a request.

147 | P a g e

"No one is allowed to carry out any maintenance work inside Al-

Aqsa Mosque compound without risking arrest."

Even more striking, he said, was Israel’s decision in 2022 to block

the entry of new carpets donated by Jordanian King Abdullah II,

the official custodian of Al-Aqsa.

The carpets, which cover an area of around 7,000 square metres

and cost $600,000, were paid for from the king’s personal funds,

the source said.

"After the carpets were produced according to the required

specifications and were ready for shipping, Israel halted

everything. They blocked their entry at the border. We tried to

obtain approvals, all in vain."

This push for control is part of a longstanding agenda

championed by figures such as Ben Gvir and Temple Mount

activists, including both current and former members of the

Israeli parliament.

By taking steps such as delaying maintenance, blocking

shipments of essential items, and opening or closing the mosque

gates at will, Israel aims to strip the Waqf of the limited authority

it still retains, placing the site firmly under its control.

According to the source, this has become the de facto reality,

where the Waqf’s administration exists only on paper, while in

practice, Israel controls everything within the mosque complex.

148 | P a g e

"Our authority over Al-Aqsa is zero," he said.

"TALK OF ‘SHARED SOVEREIGNTY’ IS NO LONGER A DISTANT

ASPIRATION FOR THESE TEMPLE GROUPS. IT HAS BECOME A

PRACTICAL PROJECT, IMPLEMENTED STEP BY STEP.”

THE THIRD TEMPLE

149 | P a g e

With Israel now in near-full control of Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the

Status Quo "long dead", as some observers put it, the question

that looms is: WHAT COMES NEXT?

150 | P a g e

151 | P a g e

152 | P a g e

153 | P a g e

In mid-2023, just a few months before the Hamas-led attack,

Amit Halevi, an Israeli MP from the governing Likud

party, PROPOSED A PLAN TO DIVIDE AL-AQSA MOSQUE

BETWEEN JEWS AND MUSLIMS.

HALEVI SUGGESTED ALLOCATING AROUND 30 PERCENT OF THE

SOUTHERN SECTION OF THE COMPLEX TO MUSLIMS, WHILE

RESERVING THE REMAINDER, INCLUDING THE AREA WHERE

THE DOME OF THE ROCK STANDS, FOR JEWS.

He also proposed revoking Jordan’s custodianship of the

mosque, echoing longstanding demands from Temple Mount

activist groups.

A year later, Ben Gvir expressed support for the idea. Although

he did not explicitly call for physically dividing the mosque, he

stated his backing for the construction of a synagogue within the

complex.

CALLS TO DESTROY AL-AQSA MOSQUE AND REPLACE IT WITH A

THIRD JEWISH TEMPLE HAVE LONG BEEN PART OF THE

RHETORIC OF TEMPLE MOUNT ACTIVIST GROUPS.

But in recent years, many of those groups have gained significant

influence, with supporters and members now holding seats in

Israel’s parliament and cabinet, including Ben Gvir himself.

154 | P a g e

In May, FINANCE MINISTER BEZALEL SMOTRICH SAID THAT

THEY WOULD "EXPAND ISRAEL’S BORDERS, BRING ABOUT

COMPLETE REDEMPTION, AND REBUILD THE TEMPLE HERE"

DURING A SPEECH AT A "JERUSALEM DAY" RALLY.

Yitzhak Wasserlauf, a member of Ben Gvir's Otzma Yehudit party

and minister for the Negev, Galilee and national resilience,

echoed the same call during a raid on Al-Aqsa earlier this month.

"WE PRAY FOR THE BUILDING OF THE TEMPLE AND COMPLETE

REDEMPTION," HE SAID IN A VIDEO FILMED FROM INSIDE THE

MOSQUE COMPLEX.

155 | P a g e

Palestinians fear that after successfully imposing a de facto

temporal division in Al-Aqsa - by allocating specific times for

Muslims and Jews to access or pray at the site - THE NEXT MOVE

IS A PHYSICAL DIVISION.

And just like the temporal division, THIS WILL COME IN STAGES,

THE FIRST OF WHICH WILL BE BUILDING A SYNAGOGUE INSIDE

THE MOSQUE COMPLEX BEFORE EXPANDING.

It mirrors the gradual takeover of the Ibrahimi Mosque in

Hebron, which was first divided temporally, then spatially.

NOW, ISRAELI AUTHORITIES ARE REPORTEDLY PLANNING TO

OFFICIALLY STRIP THE WAQF OF ITS ADMINISTRATIVE ROLE

THERE AS WELL.

During Ramadan 2025, Israeli forces barred Muslims from

entering the Ibrahimi Mosque on Fridays in an unprecedented

move.

"What is happening at Al-Aqsa Mosque is not just a series of

passing violations," said the Waqf source who spoke to MEE.

"IT’S A COMPREHENSIVE JUDAISATION PROJECT AIMED AT

IMPOSING FULL ISRAELI SOVEREIGNTY OVER THE MOSQUE.

"PALESTINIANS AND THE MUSLIM WORLD MUST REALISE THE

MAGNITUDE OF THE CHALLENGE AND PREPARE TO CONFRONT

A PLAN THAT IS RACING AGAINST TIME, BEFORE THE IMPOSED

REALITY BECOMES IRREVERSIBLE."

Malachi 3

3 “I WILL SEND MY MESSENGER, who will prepare the way

before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to

his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you

desire, will come,” says THE LORD ALMIGHTY.

2 But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can

stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a

launderer’s soap. 3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of

silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and

silver. Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in

righteousness, 4 AND THE OFFERINGS OF JUDAH AND

JERUSALEM WILL BE ACCEPTABLE TO THE LORD, AS IN DAYS

GONE BY, AS IN FORMER YEARS.

5 “So, I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify

against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who

defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and

the fatherless, and deprive the foreigners among you of justice,

but do not fear me,” says THE LORD ALMIGHTY.

THE FAITHFUL REMNANT

16 Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and

THE LORD LISTENED and heard. A SCROLL OF REMEMBRANCE

WAS WRITTEN IN HIS PRESENCE CONCERNING THOSE WHO

FEARED THE LORD AND HONORED HIS NAME.

158 | P a g e

17 “ON THE DAY WHEN I ACT,” SAYS THE LORD ALMIGHTY,

“THEY WILL BE MY TREASURED POSSESSION. I WILL

SPARE THEM, JUST AS A FATHER HAS COMPASSION AND SPARES

HIS SON WHO SERVES HIM. 18 AND YOU WILL AGAIN SEE THE

DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE RIGHTEOUS AND THE WICKED,

BETWEEN THOSE WHO SERVE GOD AND THOSE WHO DO NOT.

In a sweeping sermon on Jerusalem and end-time prophecy, #1

New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Cahn drew a straight

line from ancient Scripture to today’s news cycle, arguing that

THE CITY ONCE DISMISSED AS A RELIC OF A DEAD RELIGION IS

NOW THE MOST CONSEQUENTIAL PIECE OF REAL ESTATE ON

THE PLANET.

162 | P a g e

163 | P a g e

THE CITY GOD WOULD NOT LET DIE

Jerusalem appears more than 800 times in Scripture—142 in the

New Testament alone—and Cahn wastes no time establishing

why. “THE LORD HAS CHOSEN ZION,” he quoted from Psalm 132.

“THIS IS MY RESTING PLACE FOREVER. HERE I WILL DWELL, FOR

I HAVE DESIRED IT.”

164 | P a g e

From that foundation, he argued that JERUSALEM IS NOT

MERELY A HISTORICAL BACKDROP, BUT THE LITERAL ADDRESS

OF GOD’S PURPOSES ON EARTH.

165 | P a g e

By all laws of history, Cahn noted, the city should have vanished

centuries ago alongside Troy, Nineveh and Babylon. The fact that

it has not—and that it now commands the attention of every

major world power—is itself a fulfillment of prophecy.

“JERUSALEM IS THE PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHICAL KEY TO END-

TIME PROPHECY,” Cahn said.

TWO THOUSAND YEARS UNDER FOREIGN FEET

Citing Luke 21:24, Cahn traced the long arc of what Jesus called

“THE TIMES OF THE GENTILES”—THE ERA WHEN JERUSALEM

WOULD BE “TRAMPLED UNDERFOOT BY THE NATIONS.”

From the Roman destruction of 70 AD through successive waves

of Byzantine, Arab and Ottoman rule, the holy city spent nearly

two millennia under foreign sovereignty. That season, Cahn

argued, formally cracked on June 7, 1967, when Israeli

paratroopers reached the Western Wall.

“JERUSALEM WILL BE TRAMPLED DOWN UNTIL THAT TIME IS

OVER,” Cahn said—though he was quick to add that end-time

prophecy indicates at least ONE MORE DESOLATION IS STILL TO

COME, TIED TO THE ANTICHRIST AND THE FINAL TRIBULATION.

166 | P a g e

167 | P a g e

168 | P a g e

169 | P a g e

Turning to Daniel 9, Cahn laid out the architecture of the

TRIBULATION: A SEVEN-YEAR COVENANT, A DESECRATED

TEMPLE AND AN ANTICHRIST FIGURE WHOSE PROFILE TRACES

BACK TO THE ROMAN EMPIRE.

170 | P a g e

“HE WILL CAUSE THE SACRIFICE AND THE OFFERING TO CEASE,”

CAHN SAID OF THE PROPHESIED ANTICHRIST. “THAT MEANS

THERE WILL BE A TEMPLE—AND HE WILL DESECRATE IT.” THE

IMPLICATION IS SOBERING: A REBUILT TEMPLE IN JERUSALEM

IS NOT OPTIONAL FOR END-TIME PROPHECY TO RUN ITS

COURSE.

“YOU CAN’T HAVE A TEMPLE UNLESS YOU HAVE JEWISH PEOPLE

WHO ARE BACK IN JERUSALEM TO REBUILD THE TEMPLE. SO

ALL OF END-TIME PROPHECY IS HANGING ON JERUSALEM.”

The Nations Rage—Right on Schedule

ZECHARIAH 12 DESCRIBES JERUSALEM BECOMING “AN

IMMOVABLE STONE” THAT INJURES EVERY NATION

ATTEMPTING TO MOVE IT. “THE BIBLE SAYS THOSE NATIONS

THAT TRY TO MOVE JERUSALEM ARE GOING TO INJURE

THEMSELVES,” HE SAID, NOTING THE UN HAS ISSUED MORE

RESOLUTIONS AGAINST ISRAEL THAN AGAINST ALL OTHER

NATIONS COMBINED.

A REVIVAL BORN THE SAME MONTH AS A WAR

Perhaps the sermon’s most striking observation: the modern

Messianic Jewish movement was born not years or decades after

Jerusalem’s restoration, but in the same month. The Jesus

Movement that swept California in June 1967 produced Jews for

171 | P a g e

172 | P a g e

173 | P a g e

Jesus in San Francisco—”the end of the earth” from Jerusalem,

Cahn noted—directly fulfilling Paul’s words in Romans 11 that

Israel’s hardening would lift as “the fullness of the Gentiles

comes in.”

That convergence, Cahn said, was no coincidence. “As the Jewish

people returned to Jerusalem, it set in motion the return of the

Jewish people to Messiah.”

174 | P a g e

175 | P a g e

HIS FEET ON THE MOUNT OF OLIVES

Cahn closed with Zechariah 14’s climactic scene: all nations

converging on Jerusalem, the city partially taken—and then the

Lord himself intervening. “His feet will stand on that day on the

Mount of Olives,” Cahn read. He then traced the echo back to

Acts 1, where angels promised the disciples that Jesus would

return “the same way” He had left—from that very same hill

overlooking the city.

The sermon’s final word was less a warning than an invitation:

Jerusalem is not a political problem to be solved. It is a prophetic

promise being kept. “Whatever happens to Jerusalem,” Cahn

said, “goes out to the whole earth.”

JERUSALEM AND END TIME PROPHECY |

JONATHAN CAHN SERMON

58 years ago today, events in the Middle East were setting the

world on fire, which has already happened in every one of our

lifetimes.

That has happened where the whole world was focusing on

what's happening in the Middle East, particularly leading to

Israel. And it would all lead to the fulfillment of biblical prophecy,

the restoration of Jerusalem. Without that, the end cannot

Prophecy, Messiah cannot come. Jerusalem, the holy city.

Tonight I want to open up the realm of Jerusalem of end time

prophecy. Jerusalem and linking to the book of Revelation on the

end of the age. Of Jerusalem it is written in Psalm 87, the Lord

loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.

That's Jerusalem.

Psalm 132 it says, for the Lord has chosen Zion. Zion is Jerusalem.

It became the name of the whole land, but it's first Jerusalem,

Mount Zion.

Zion, he chose it, he desired it for his dwelling place. This is my

resting place forever. Here I will dwell for I have desired it.

So it was mentioned early on in the Bible, my name, when he

said to Moses, the place where I will put my name. That's

Jerusalem. It is the holy city, the place of God's dwelling, called

the Beit Mikdash, or the holy house, the temple.

Jerusalem, if you're born again, you were born again wherever

you received the Lord, but you're also born again in Jerusalem

because that's where you were saved. You were saved there, and

then when you received it. Resurrection, Jerusalem.

Holy Spirit, Pentecost, Jerusalem. Jerusalem is mentioned more

than any other city in scripture, over 800 times in the Bible. In

the New Testament, 142 times.

201 | P a g e

In the Hebrew scriptures, for some reason, 666, whatever that is.

Half of the books of the New Testament contain Jerusalem in it.

Two-thirds of the Hebrew scriptures contain Jerusalem.

202 | P a g e

Zion, it's called the city of God. The city they called Salem,

Shalem. It's called Ariel, or the lion.

203 | P a g e

It's about lions. What about prophecy? Jerusalem is the, is the

physical, geographical key to end time prophecy. That's what

we're going to open up tonight.

204 | P a g e

205 | P a g e

206 | P a g e

Luke 21, 24, he said they will fall by the edge of the sword, and

the Lord is talking about the Jewish people. They'll be led captive

into all the nations, and Jerusalem, when they're captive in the

nations, Jerusalem will be trampled down underfoot until the

time of the Gentiles is fulfilled. All right, what does that mean?

What is the time of the Gentiles? It's undoubtedly speaking of

the days, or the ages, when the Gentile world powers rule the

world, which is basically much, or pretty much all of history so

far.

So here is the age of the Gentiles, and it's an amazing thing,

because it's saying that the age of the Gentiles, or the nations, is

all linked to a single city, Jerusalem. On Jerusalem hangs the

entire age, the age of the Gentiles, and the age of the kingdom.

Now Messiah is giving a prophecy of the destruction of

Jerusalem, and the leading captive of the Jewish people into all

nations.

That happened dramatically in 70 AD, when the armies of Rome

came in and destroyed Jerusalem and Israel, and took the Jewish

people captive into the nations, beginning the, the most massive

dispersion of the Jewish people there. They'd already been

dispersed, but this was the most, up to this day. That's why

Jewish people are in America, because of what happened.

Rome came in and trampled Jerusalem underfoot, and as far as

the Jewish people were concerned, their holy city, Jerusalem,

207 | P a g e

was trampled underfoot by one power of the nations after the

next, after the next, after the next, for nearly 2,000 years. First

the Romans, then the Eastern Romans, called Byzantines, then

THE MUSLIM ARABS, then the Muslim Turks, until the First World

War, when the British entered the land under General Allenby, a

Christian, and came into the land, and the Turks fled. And so

Jerusalem was still trampled down by the nations, up until what

happened 58 years ago, June 7th, 1967.

Messiah Himself prophesied, Jerusalem was set free, given to

see that as the ending of the times of the Gentiles. Jerusalem will

be trampled down until that time is over.

Well, it can't ultimately be so, since according to end time

prophecy, JERUSALEM IS GOING TO BE TRAMPLED DOWN AT

LEAST ONE MORE TIME. AS BY THE ANTICHRIST. JERUSALEM IS

THE CAPITAL, IT'S THE HOLY CITY.

Daniel 9:27

27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the

middle of the ‘seven’, he will put an end to sacrifice and offering.

And at the temple, he will set up an abomination that causes

desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”

The people of the ruler who will come, will destroy the city and

the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue

until the end, and desolations have been decreed.

Israel is more connected to that city than any nation is connected

to any city. AND YET THE WORLD REFUSES, IT'S THE ONLY

CAPITAL THE WORLD REFUSES TO RECOGNIZE. THEY ARE

PROPHESIED TO COME BACK TO ZION.

ZION AGAIN, LAND OF ISRAEL, BUT ALSO IS FIRST JERUSALEM.

IN THE PROPHECIES OF MESSIAH HIMSELF, CONCERNING THE

219 | P a g e

END OF THE AGE, HE SPEAKS OF JEWISH DISCIPLES BEING IN

JERUSALEM. HE GIVES THEM ADVICE.

220 | P a g e

When you hear this, when you see this, flee here, pray it's not on

the Sabbath. The Jewish people, according to Bible prophecy,

have to be in Jerusalem before Messiah can come, or come again.

So that happened June 7th. So this is talking about redemption.

He's going to come to die for sins in Jerusalem. The folks on

Jerusalem.

But He's going to die for our sins there. Make an end of sin. Then

it talks about prophecy. All prophecy to be fulfilled. Focus on

Jerusalem. Salvation came from Jerusalem. It will go back to

Jerusalem. Again, the death, the resurrection, the Holy Spirit, all

came from Jerusalem to your life. You are linked to Jerusalem.

And that brings us to the next verse. Verse 27. Daniel.

221 | P a g e

HE SHALL CONFIRM THE COVENANT WITH MANY FOR ONE

SEVEN, ONE WEEK, ONE SEVEN. IN THE MIDST OF THAT SEVEN,

SEVEN YEARS, HE WILL CAUSE THE SACRIFICE AND THE

OFFERING TO CEASE, AND FOR THE OVERSPREADING OF

ABOMINATIONS, HE SHALL MAKE IT DESOLATE UNTIL THE

CONSUMMATION THAT DETERMINES. HE SHALL POUR OUT ON

DESOLATION.

So, it's talking about He. WHO'S HE? HE IS THE ONE WHO WAS

JUST MENTIONED BEFORE. IT SAID THE PEOPLE OF THE PRINCE

WHO WILL COME WILL DESTROY THE CITY. WELL, WHO

DESTROYED THE CITY? THE ROMANS. SO THE PEOPLE OF THE

PRINCE WHO WILL COME. THE PRINCE WHO WILL COME WILL

IN SOME WAY BE ROMAN.

222 | P a g e

223 | P a g e

224 | P a g e

IT'S TALKING ABOUT THE ANTICHRIST, THE MOST-EVIL PRINCE

TO COME. FIRST CLEAR MENTION OF THE ANTICHRIST. IT SAYS

HE WILL MAKE NOW A COVENANT WITH ISRAEL IN THE MIDST

OF THAT SEVEN, THAT LAST MISSING SEVEN OR WEEK OF

DANIEL. THAT'S SEVEN YEARS. THAT IS THEREFORE THE

TRIBULATION. THAT'S ONE THAT, YOU KNOW, IT FILLED UP TO

JESUS.

Then there's one missing week. That's the tribulation. That's the

book of Revelation. And then it says IN THE MIDST OF THAT

SEVEN, DIVIDE SEVEN BY HALF, AND YOU GET THREE AND A

HALF YEARS, 42 MONTHS OR 1,260 DAYS. That goes throughout

the book of Revelation. THE ANTICHRIST, OR PRINCE, WILL STOP

THE SACRIFICE OF THE TEMPLE. THAT MEANS THERE WILL BE A

TEMPLE, AND HE WILL DESECRATE IT. HE WILL, IT SAYS

ABOMINATION, DESOLATION. THE WHOLE PROPHECY OF THE

ANTICHRIST AND REVELATION IS CENTERED ON JERUSALEM.

225 | P a g e

226 | P a g e

227 | P a g e

228 | P a g e

229 | P a g e

230 | P a g e

231 | P a g e

What he's going to do in Jerusalem, and you have to have Jewish

people there, or this doesn't work. There's going to be a temple

in Jerusalem. It's yet to come. THE HOLY CITY WILL BE

TRAMPLED DOWN. JERUSALEM, HOLY CITY. Again, that goes

with what Messiah said.

232 | P a g e

233 | P a g e

IT WILL BE TRAMPLED DOWN UNTIL THE END. FORTY-TWO

MONTHS, THREE AND A HALF YEARS, OR 1,260 DAYS.

234 | P a g e

235 | P a g e

236 | P a g e

237 | P a g e

238 | P a g e

239 | P a g e

240 | P a g e

241 | P a g e

242 | P a g e

243 | P a g e

244 | P a g e

245 | P a g e

246 | P a g e

247 | P a g e

248 | P a g e

249 | P a g e

250 | P a g e

251 | P a g e

252 | P a g e

253 | P a g e

254 | P a g e

255 | P a g e

It says during that time period, you will have two witnesses.

Where? In Jerusalem. And THEY WILL PROPHESY UNTIL THE

END, AND IT SAYS THEIR BODIES WILL BE KILLED BY THE

ANTICHRIST. THEIR BODIES WILL LIE IN THE GREAT CITY. WHICH

ONE? THAT IS, IT SAYS, WHERE THE LORD WAS CRUCIFIED.

NEOM BABYLON. THE GREAT CITY.

256 | P a g e

And in order again for this to happen, REMEMBER WHAT

MESSIAH SAID, WHEN YOU SEE WHAT DANIEL SPOKE ABOUT,

THE ABOMINATION, DESOLATION. TALKING ABOUT THE

DESOLATION OF THE TEMPLE. DESECRATION. WHERE'S THE

TEMPLE? JERUSALEM. PAUL SAID THE MAN OF SIN WILL BE

REVEALED, AND WHAT WILL HE DO? IT SAYS HE WILL DECLARE

HIMSELF GOD IN THE TEMPLE, OR HOLY PLACE OF GOD.

JERUSALEM.

257 | P a g e

You gotta have Jerusalem. And in Jerusalem you gotta have a

temple. You can't, you're not gonna have a temple unless you

have Jewish people, who are back in Jerusalem to rebuild the

temple.

So, all of end time prophecy is hanging on Jerusalem, and THE

JEWISH PEOPLE RETURNING THERE AGAIN. THE ANTICHRIST IS

LINKED TO THAT. The persecution, the abomination, the two

witnesses, the great tribulation.

258 | P a g e

259 | P a g e

260 | P a g e

261 | P a g e

AND THAT BRINGS US TO THE CENTER OF THE BATTLE, THE

TEMPLE MOUNT IN JERUSALEM. BECAUSE THE TEMPLE MOUNT

IS CENTRAL IN END TIME PROPHECY. THE ENEMY WARS OVER

THAT MOUNT. BECAUSE HE KNOWS THAT ALL THE PURPOSES

ARE GOING TO FOCUS ON THAT MOUNT, THE TEMPLE. MESSIAH

IS GOING TO REIGN FROM THERE. HE'S FINISHED WHEN THAT

HAPPENS. THAT'S WHY EVEN TO THIS DAY THERE'S A WAR OVER

THAT TEMPLE MOUNT. THAT'S WHY THE TEMPLE MOUNT

RIGHT NOW IS IN THE HANDS OF ISRAEL'S ENEMIES. EVEN

THOUGH ISRAEL HAS SOVEREIGNTY, THEY STILL ALLOWED IT.

262 | P a g e

263 | P a g e

264 | P a g e

And that's why Jewish people are not allowed to this day to

observe anything of God on that mount. That's where all,

everything was to be observed, they're not allowed to. That's

why even the rumor that Jewish people may go up there to pray

or observe something of God can send the whole region, the

land, and the world into an uproar, even a world war.

Why? Because the enemy is going to go crazy to stop anything

happening on that mount that has to do with God, because that's

his end. Next key of end time prophecy with Jerusalem. If you

have your Bible, Zechariah 12.

Very important. Verse 1, the burden of the Lord, the word of the

Lord for Israel. Thus says the Lord, who stretches out the heavens

and lays the foundation of the earth, forms the spirit of man

inside of him.

265 | P a g e

266 | P a g e

267 | P a g e

268 | P a g e

Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling to all the

nations round about. And when they lay siege against Judah

and Jerusalem, I'll make it a cup of trembling. In that day I will

make Jerusalem an immovable stone, a burdensome stone for

all the nations, and all who try to move it, all who burden

themselves with it, will be cut, will be injured, they will injure

themselves.

Even though all the nations of the earth will be gathered

together against it. What's it saying? In the last days, all the

nations, what the Bible says, all the nations will be focused on

Jerusalem. Israel, but Jerusalem.

The nations will try to move Jerusalem. And those who do so, try,

will be injured by it. Again, Jerusalem, center of end-time

prophecy. The whole world is going to focus on it. But the Bible

says in the last days, the whole world's going to be focused on

Jerusalem. And the thing is, as long as the Jewish people weren't

there, the world pretty much didn't care about it for most of the

time.

As soon as the Jewish people started coming back to it, the world

all of a sudden started going crazy about Jerusalem. Why?

Because it's the enemy behind it. The enemy knows. The enemy

knows that when the Jewish people return to Jerusalem, it

means somebody else is also going to return to Jerusalem. That

is why. Zechariah says the nations will try to move Jerusalem.

269 | P a g e

How do you move a city? You can't move a city. What it means is,

you change the borders, you change the sovereignty. We say this

is not yours anymore.

270 | P a g e

And that's exactly what this present world is trying to do. This is

total, the world falling in line with biblical prophecy. Less than a

year ago, the United Nations, speaking of the nations, the Bible

speaks about it, passed a resolution declaring that much of the

land that Israel rests on is illegal, and specifically cited Jerusalem.

So the United Nations says Israel has no right to Jerusalem. It's

illegal. And they pass this resolution declaring Jerusalem illegal

and otherwise, but the vote was something like 124 nations for

it. And how many said no? 14. 124 versus 14. The Bible says the

nations of the world. The UN then was giving Israel 12 months to

get out of Jerusalem. The Bible says the nations rage and the Lord

laughs. The UN.

It's amazing because the Bible says those nations that try to

move Jerusalem are going to injure themselves. The UN in the

last period of time has issued more resolutions condemning little

tiny Israel more than any other nation in the world. It has passed

more resolutions condemning Israel than all the nations on

planet earth combined times two.

It makes no sense. Except end time prophecy says it's going to

happen. And because there's a spiritual war there and that is

what began. It all began 58 years ago when the Israel entered

Jerusalem. But the prophecy goes further than that. It's not only

that the nations of the world are going to seek to move

Jerusalem, but they're going to come against Jerusalem, Israel.

271 | P a g e

272 | P a g e

273 | P a g e

274 | P a g e

275 | P a g e

276 | P a g e

They'll converge to destroy it. The whole world against Israel. The

whole world against Jerusalem. Why? Because Jerusalem is the

city of God. It doesn't make any sense any other way. And in

America, for the first time across our college campuses, it was

the young who were leading this.

Which says that if they don't get saved, or there's not revival,

that's the future. Even of America. It says the nations will come

against Israel. But more than that will happen. Because the

Jewish people, they pray for Messiah to come. But Messiah is

only going to come to save his people. So he will come in the day

when Israel needs to be saved. And the world needs to be saved.

He came the first time to save us from sin.

That could be any time. But he's coming the second time to save

from destruction. And so he will come in that day. But they're just

going to be surprised who it turns out to be. It's going to be a big

surprise when they realize it's Jesus is their long-awaited Jewish

Messiah.

Zechariah 12 10. And I will pour out, Lord speaking, I will pour

out on the house of David and the those who indwell Jerusalem

the spirit of grace and supplication, so that they will look upon

me whom they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as for

an only son. They will weep bitterly over him like the bitter

weeping of a firstborn.

277 | P a g e

They, what's that? I will pour out my spirit on them in Jerusalem

and the house of David, so that they will look upon me whom

they have pierced. Wow. The people of Israel are going to turn to

their Messiah when they realize who their Messiah is. They will

look upon me whom they have pierced. Who is the one talking?

THE LORD IS TALKING. HE'S ALREADY IDENTIFIED. THE LORD

YAHWEH, THE I AM IS TALKING. AND HE SAYS, AMAZING I HAVE

BEEN PIERCED BY THEM. AMAZING. THE LORD IN HEBREW,

YAHWEH, PIERCED. THE ETERNAL GOD CREATOR, PIERCED.

THEY'RE MOURNING FOR THE ONE THEY PIERCED.

278 | P a g e

279 | P a g e

280 | P a g e

281 | P a g e

282 | P a g e

283 | P a g e

284 | P a g e

285 | P a g e

286 | P a g e

287 | P a g e

288 | P a g e

289 | P a g e

290 | P a g e

291 | P a g e

What does that mean? If you mourn for the one you pierced, it

means a total change of heart. So now the Jewish people, the

one that they saw as an enemy, they're going to embrace as a

loved one, their family. Jesus to them of the Gentiles is the God

where they were persecuted in his name.

But they're going to realize it's Yeshua, their own Messiah, their

brother, their Redeemer that they've been waiting for. From the

books of Moses onward, it says that in the last days the Jewish

people are going to return to the Lord, turn to the Lord, but

nothing could be so dramatic as this picture when they're going

to actually mourn for the one that they pierced. Total turning.

Total revolutionary turning. The modern messianic revival of

Jewish people coming to the Lord was born out of the moving of

the spirit and the gospel in the Jesus movement, particularly on

the west coast. The Jesus movement was born out of what was

called the Summer of Love. And many people, they started

getting saved who came there. Much of that was centered on San

Francisco. You know that Jews for Jesus was born in San Francisco

around that time.

It's striking because the Bible says the Jewish people will be

scattered to the ends of the earth and then they will return to

the Lord. Interesting because we're San Francisco, California.

That from Jerusalem, it's the end of the earth. It's, you keep

going, it's the farthest part you can go west. If you're scattered

292 | P a g e

west, the other side goes to Russia. So here from the ends of the

earth, they began, this movement began Jewish people.

The modern messianic revival was born out of the Jesus

movement. When was the Jesus movement born? In the late

1960s. When more specifically? The year 1967. Same year that

Jerusalem was restored. So as the Jewish people returned to

Jerusalem, it set in motion the return of the Jewish people to

Messiah. When exactly did the Jesus movement begin? In June

1967. The same month. First came the Six-Day War at the birth

of the Jesus movement. The very same year and month.

So the return of the Jewish people is central in the Bible end-time

prophecy. And that may open up another realm of the times of

the Gentiles. It's written in Romans 11. Paul said, I don't want you

to be unaware of this brothers and sisters. I don't want you to be

uninformed about this mystery. So you don't become conceited

in your own estimation. But a partial hardening has come over

Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all

Israel will be saved as it is written. The Redeemer will come.

The beginning of the age, you had Jewish believers, Jewish

apostles, Jewish disciples of the church leading. Where were

they? Jerusalem. That's where it all started. That's where it's all

going to end. The Jewish believers were in Jerusalem. But when

Jerusalem was destroyed, the Jewish people were scattered and

the Jewish believers started disappearing from the church.

293 | P a g e

So now you have Jerusalem coming back and you have Jewish

people reappearing in the church. And Jew and Gentile together

as one in the church. And the church coming back to its roots at

the same moment.

See if everything else is returning, then there's got to be another

return. Zechariah 12 continuing says, in that day the Lord will

defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Verse 9, it will come into

pass in that day I will seek to destroy the nations that come

against Jerusalem. The final war, final showdown is going to

center where? On Jerusalem in the end. All nations, that's when

God shows up. When Hitler rose up, God used America and the

allies to defeat him.

But on the end, at the end, there's not going to be any nation to

defend Israel. That's when God will show up. That's when he'll

come on the stage. When the author comes on the stage here,

you know the play is over. He's going to come on the stage. He

will fight for his people. It says in Zechariah 14 now, verse 2, I will

gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle. All nations. It

doesn't even say against Israel. It says Jerusalem. And the city will

be taken. Women ravished, half the city go into captivity and the

remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

But then it says, then the Lord shall go forth and fight against

those nations as when he fought on the day of battle. And then

it says this, listen next verse, and his feet will stand on that day

294 | P a g e

on the Mount of Olives. The Mount of Olives will split in half and

his feet will stand.

Whose feet? It says the Lord's feet will stand on the Mount of

Olives. That's kind of reminiscent of something. How did Messiah

end his time on earth, his mission? Acts 1 when they came

together, he asked, Lord, is it at this time you're going to restore

the kingdom to Israel? He didn't say, no, no, God's finished with

Israel.

It's not replacement theology, everybody. No, he said, it's not for

you to know when. And he spoke and he said, but you go forth

by the Spirit and you spread the gospel to the end. And when he

spoke these things, while they were looking at him, he was taken

up. And a cloud received him out of their sight. And they were

staring into heaven, as we would, staring into the sky.

Two men were standing by, had white garments on. They said,

men of Galilee, why are you gazing, why do you stand gazing up

into the sky? This same Yeshua, Jesus, who was taken from you

into heaven, he's coming back the same way. Then he will come,

then he will reign, from where? From Yerushalayim. That is, he is

the king of Jerusalem. And he's your king. Whatever happens to

Jerusalem goes out to the whole earth.

Whatever happens to Israel affects the whole world. WHEN THEY

FIND PEACE WITH MESSIAH, THE WHOLE WORLD WILL FIND

PEACE WITH MESSIAH. THAT'S WHEN THE TIMES OF THE

295 | P a g e

NATIONS OR THE GENTILE KINGDOMS WILL COME TO AN END,

WHEN MESSIAH WILL REIGN.

Now listen from what we have seen tonight now. Listen to what

Daniel saw. Listen to it. One like the Son of Man coming on the

clouds. And coming where? To the Mount of Olives. And there he

was given dominion forever. Who would do that? Only the Lord

could have dominion forever. Only the Lord could have a kingdom

that is forever. But it says this is one like the Son of Man, Messiah.

And that kingdom will rule the earth from Yerushalayim,

Jerusalem. That is why the world is raging against the coming

back of Jerusalem. Because the enemy knows what's coming.

The enemy knows that this is the beginning of the kingdom. And

the old doesn't want the new. The kingdom of darkness brought

to the end. That'll bring this home. If we had heard all these

things years ago, by the laws of history, Jerusalem should be gone

with the city of Troy and Thebes and Nineveh and Babylon should

be dust. But God said it.

And that's why Jerusalem is back in the modern world. That's

why it's actually a city that all the nations of the earth have to

deal with. Not only that, but the focus of the world is on it, as

God said it would be. The Jewish people are back. Jewish

believers are there. Worshiping God. Worshiping Messiah. You

can go there today and see the words of the prophets alive. It's a

miracle.

331 | P a g e

332 | P a g e

It's a double miracle that you got Israel and Jerusalem. And it

happened at a time when young people were heading to San

Francisco for the Summer of Love. There was a war raging in

Vietnam. Johnson was president. People were protesting. The

Beatles were coming out with Sergeant Pepper, I believe that

same month. With all that going on, God, the God of the Bible,

was fulfilling His ancient scripture in the midst of the world.

Because nothing stops the purposes of God for Messiah to come

again. Hey, this is Jonathan Cahn.

AL-AQSA MOSQUE: THE SIGNIFICANCE

OF (5) ONE OF ISLAM'S HOLIEST SITES

We take a look at the history, significance and tensions

surrounding al-Aqsa and answer key questions (5) ABOUT WHY

IT IS REVERED.

A woman walks towards (5) THE DOME OF THE ROCK, a (5)

HIGHLY REVERED SITE IN ISLAM (Reuters)

335 | P a g e

336 | P a g e

JERUSALEM'S AL-AQSA MOSQUE IS THE THIRD-HOLIEST SITE IN

ISLAM, DRAWING TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PILGRIMS FROM

ACROSS PALESTINE AND THE WIDER MUSLIM WORLD EACH

YEAR.

THE MOSQUE ALSO SERVES AS A SYMBOL

OF PALESTINIAN RESISTANCE AND HAS OFTEN BEEN TARGETED

BY ISRAELI FORCES IN RAIDS AND BY HARDLINE GROUPS

WISHING TO REBUILD A TEMPLE IN ITS PLACE.

Spanning 14 hectares, THE MOSQUE INCLUDES THE GOLDEN-

DOMED DOME OF THE ROCK, ARGUABLY ONE OF JERUSALEM'S

MOST RECOGNISABLE LANDMARKS, AS WELL AS THE ANCIENT

AL-QIBLI MOSQUE, BOTH OF WHICH ARE CONSIDERED SACRED.

The huge site, also known as Haram al-Sharif, or "noble

sanctuary," in Arabic, traditonally had 15 gates, which allowed

worshippers to pour into its grounds from the surrounding Old

City of Jerusalem.

However, only 10 of these are still in use and are controlled by

heavily armed Israeli soldiers and police officers.

Here, Middle East Eye provides a comprehensive guide to the

holy site and answers key questions about its religious and

cultural significance:

Where is it and what is the meaning behind the name?

337 | P a g e

338 | P a g e

Located in the southeast corner of the Old City of Jerusalem, al-

Aqsa's Dome of the Rock is visible from across the city.

The entire complex contained within the outer walls includes an

area of 144,000 square metres, and has mosques, prayer rooms,

courtyards and religious landmarks.

339 | P a g e

IN ARABIC, AL-AQSA HAS TWO MEANINGS: "THE FURTHEST,"

WHICH REFERS TO ITS DISTANCE FROM MECCA, AS MENTIONED

IN ISLAM'S HOLY BOOK, THE QURAN, AND ALSO "THE

SUPREME," REFERRING TO ITS STATUS AMONG MUSLIMS.

MUSLIMS ALSO BELIEVE THE SITE IS WHERE THE PROPHET

MUHAMMAD LED HIS FELLOW PROPHETS IN PRAYER DURING A

MIRACULOUS NIGHT JOURNEY, KNOWN AS THE MIRAJ.

340 | P a g e

Why is the site so important?

Besides its religious importance, al-Aqsa is a symbol of the

culture and nationhood of the Palestinian people.

THE GLISTENING GOLDEN DOME OF THE ROCK IS

RECOGNISABLE TO MUSLIMS FROM AROUND THE WORLD, AND

TO PRAY AT THE SITE IS CONSIDERED TO BE A GREAT PRIVILEGE.

341 | P a g e

In the years before modern borders, PILGRIMAGES TO THE

MUSLIM HOLY CITIES OF MECCA AND MEDINA WOULD INCLUDE

A STOPOVER IN JERUSALEM. The vast courtyards of al-Aqsa still

draw tens of thousands of worshippers who gather every Friday

for congregational prayers. DURING THE HOLY MONTH

OF RAMADAN, THE AREA IS ESPECIALLY BUSY WITH

WORSHIPPERS, WHO GO TO THE MOSQUE FOR THE SPECIAL

NIGHTLY TARAWEEH PRAYERS.

342 | P a g e

On EID AL-FITR, WHICH MARKS THE END OF THE HOLY MONTH

OF RAMADAN, the mood of the area becomes more celebratory

and includes singing, processions and the gifting of sweets to

passers-by.

For Jews, the site is known as the Temple Mount, where many

believe two ancient Jewish temples once stood - the temple built

by King Solomon (Suleiman in Arabic), which was destroyed by

the Babylonians, and the second temple, destroyed by the

Romans.

The site is home to the "Foundation Stone," where observant

Jews believe the creation of the world began.

Since the Israeli occupation of East Jerusalem began in 1967, the

site has been the subject of contention between Muslim

worshippers and those groups that want to restore full Jewish

control over the area.

What are some of the main landmarks at al-Aqsa?

Al-Aqsa is home to several landmarks associated with the city of

Jerusalem and features some of the best-preserved historic

architecture from the early Islamic period.

Besides the religious buildings and structures, there are 32 water

sources on the site, including wells used for ablutions.

Several mimbars, or pulpits, and historic schools can also be

found inside al-Aqsa's walls, some dating back to the Mamluk

and Ayyubid eras.

362 | P a g e

THE DOME OF THE ROCK

ACCORDING TO ISLAMIC BELIEF, (5) THE DOME OF THE ROCK

CONTAINED THE FIRST QIBLA, OR DIRECTION TOWARDS WHICH

MUSLIMS PRAYED.

ACCORDING TO ISLAM, AL-AQSA WAS ONE OF THE EARLIEST

MOSQUES, FOLLOWING THE KAABA, THE BLACK CUBOID

STRUCTURE IN MECCA, WHERE MUSLIMS PERFORM THE HAJ

AND UMRAH PILGRIMAGES AND DIRECT THEIR PRAYERS.

THE MOSQUE PLAYS A KEY PART IN THE PROPHET

MUHAMMAD'S MIRACULOUS NIGHT JOURNEY TO THE

HEAVENS, KNOWN IN ARABIC AS AL-ISRA WA AL-MI’RAJ.

MUSLIMS BELIEVE THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD MET THE

124,000 PROPHETS WHO PRECEDED HIM AND LED THEM IN

PRAYER AT THE AL-AQSA MOSQUE.

IN ARABIC, THE DOME OF THE ROCK IS REFERRED TO

AS QUBBAT AL-SAKHRA, AND HOLDS A RELIGIOUS AND

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE.

The structure was commissioned by the Umayyad Caliph Abdul

Malik ibn Marwan between 691-692CE, OVER A ROCK FROM

WHICH THE PROPHET WAS BELIEVED TO HAVE ASCENDED TO

HEAVEN.

ISLAMIC BELIEF STATES THAT A DIVINE LADDER DESCENDED

FROM THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF PARADISE TO THE ROCK OF

ASCENSION. THE ROCK STANDS AROUND ONE-AND-A-HALF

METRES ABOVE THE FLOOR, IN A LOCATION CALLED "THE

PROPHET'S CHAPEL". THE DOME OF THE ROCK IS ONE OF THE

EARLIEST EXAMPLES OF ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE AND FORMS

THE ARCHETYPAL STRUCTURE OF LATER MOSQUES AND

ISLAMIC STRUCTURES. ITS OCTAGONAL STRUCTURE HAS FOUR

ENTRYWAYS, AND ITS INTERIOR IS DECORATED WITH VERSES

FROM SURAH AL-ISRA IN THE QURAN. THESE INSCRIPTIONS

ARE ALSO SOME OF THE EARLIEST SURVIVING EXAMPLES OF

THE TEXT OF THE QURAN.

Inside the mosque, worshippers are met by grand stained glass

windows, intricately decorated with Islamic motifs and

typography. The mosque is also home to one of the oldest

surviving mihrabs, a niche in the mosque's wall showing the

direction of prayer towards MECCA. One of the most important

sites at al-Aqsa is the Western Wall, also known as the al-

Buraq wall, on the southwest fringe of the mosque.

The wall is between the Gate of the Prophet and the Moroccan

Gate, and the area also has a small mosque, which was

constructed between 1307 and 1336CE.

Standing around 20 metres tall and 50 metres in length, the wall

is believed to be where the Prophet Mohammed tied a winged

horse-like creature, known as al-Buraq, before he ascended to

heaven.

The Western Wall is sacred for Jews, who believe that it is the last

remaining structure of the Herodian temple, which was

destroyed by the Romans in 70CE.

Each year, tens of thousands of Jews gather and pray at the site,

posting prayers between niches in the wall.

Al-Qibli Mosque

The silver-domed structure is towards the southern wall of al-

Aqsa and is the first building constructed by Muslims at the site.

It is considered one of the most significant structures on the site

and is where the imam stands to lead worshippers in prayer.

When Muslims entered Jerusalem in 638CE, Islam's second

caliph, Omar bin al-Khattab, and his companions ordered the

construction of the mosque, in what was at the time a barren and

neglected area.

Originally, the mosque was a simple building that sat on wooden

trusses, but the structure that is seen today was first built by the

Umayyad Caliph Walid bin Abdul Malek bin Marwan at the start

of the eighth century.

Throughout history, the mosque has experienced numerous

earthquakes and attacks, which have left a mark on the original

structure.

Its last major refurbishment was during the Ottoman period,

during which the sultan Suleiman the Magnificent restored a

number of sites within the mosque area, installing plush carpets

and lanterns.

Today, al-Qibli Mosque has nine entrances. The main entrance is

in the middle of the building's northern facade. Inside, stone and

marble columns tower high, supporting the structure.

The stone columns are ancient, while the marble ones were part

of renovations in the early 20th century.

With enough (5) ROOM TO HOST AROUND 5,500

WORSHIPPERS, the mosque has a length of 80 metres and width

of 55 metres.

Inside, the mosque's dome is wooden and the columns are

decorated with glass mosaics, which feature illustrations of

plants, geometric patterns and verses from the Quran.

How has the site become a symbol of Palestinian resistance?

For Palestinians, al-Aqsa serves more than a religious function

and is the centre of the cultural life, where they go to celebrate,

congregate and mourn. Many Palestinians who frequent the

mosque have been visiting since they were young, and, for them,

al-Aqsa is the most widely recognised symbol of their country.

Many also break their fasts at the mosque during Ramadan and

go to pray there on Fridays, depending on the restrictions Israeli

occupation forces have in place.

often a gathering point for rallies, protests and celebrations (AFP)

393 | P a g e

ANOTHER REASON FOR THE PALESTINIAN ATTACHMENT TO THE

MOSQUE IS THE THREAT TO ITS EXISTENCE POSED BY HARDLINE

GROUPS WHO WANT THE AREA TO BE THE HOME OF A REBUILT

TEMPLE.

DESPITE OPPOSITION TO THE IDEA BY MAINSTREAM JEWISH

RELIGIOUS LEADERS, CALLS TO REBUILD THE TEMPLE HAVE

BEEN GETTING LOUDER IN RECENT DECADES AND HAVE DRAWN

RELIGIOUS AND POLITICAL SUPPORT.

The site is home to what is believed to be Palestine's first

museum, the Islamic Museum, which was established in 1923

and contains rare archaeological and artistic collections, as well

as manuscripts of the Quran.

History of tensions at al-Aqsa

The al-Aqsa mosque, along with the rest of East Jerusalem and

the West Bank, was captured by the Israelis during the 1967 war.

After the conquest and subsequent occupation, Israeli

authorities allowed Jews to perform prayers at the Western Wall

but not inside al-Aqsa.

As a result of those restrictions, Jews and foreign tourists can

enter the site only through the Maghribi Gate.

Nevertheless, there have been countless attacks on al-Aqsa,

mostly by Zionist groups, but Israeli authorities have also been

criticised for carrying out excavations and demolitions in the

area.

During the first Palestinian Intifida in 1988, Israeli forces attacked

Muslim worshippers who were in the courtyard outside the

Dome of the Rock, using teargas and rubber-coated steel bullets,

and injuring many.

One of the most notable recent incidents happened in

September 2000, when then Israeli opposition leader Ariel

Sharon toured al-Aqsa, surrounded by heavily armed Israeli

soldiers.

The act was seen as a major provocation and inflamed tensions,

with many attributing the start of the Second Intifada to the

incident.

In 2015, nationalists entered the site to mark the anniversary of

Israel's occupation of East Jerusalem, provoking Palestinian

protests and Israeli military suppression of any dissent. Known as

"Jerusalem Day," 17 May is a date that usually sees an uptick in

aggression.

Muslims frequently face difficulties when entering al-Aqsa due to

Israeli security measures with young men, especially, blocked

from entering during periods of heightened tensions.

steel bullets and teargas at worshippers (AFP)

Muslims in the West Bank can only enter the site with a permit:

restrictions vary, including a total bar on certain days.

The atmosphere is particularly tense during Ramadan, when

Israeli authorities can place bans on Palestinian worshippers who

want to pray at the site, or when members of the Knesset tour

the area.
