EDITOR RECOMMENDS
From counting pints to crafting
quality: The next chapter in
beverage dispense technology
he beverage dispense industry has
undergone a quiet revolution over the past
Tdecade. What began as a means to closely
monitor volume and secure revenue – effectively
tracking every pint poured – has evolved into
a sophisticated space focused on drink quality,
precision dosing and consistency across a broad
spectrum of beverages. At the heart of this shift
is a continual refinement of flow measurement
technology, a domain where Titan Enterprises
Ltd has been at the forefront of innovation and
working with OEMs in the food and beverage
sector.
For many years, flowmeters in bars, pubs and
production lines were valued primarily as tools
for financial accountability. Put simply, they
ensured the right amount of beer or cider was
dispensed to protect margins and cut losses.
While this monitoring is still vitally important,
today’s beverage industry demands so much
more. Customer expectations for flavour
consistency, perfect carbonation, freshly-blended
soft drinks and bespoke dispensing experiences
have intensified. This broader quality agenda has
pushed manufacturers and OEMs to enhance
technology that not only counts liquid but also
controls its quality and delivery with precision.
Central to this transition are Titan’s NSF-
Approved beverage flowmeters, engineered under
stringent food safety standards to support the
evolving needs of the beverage sector. Certified
to meet NSF/ANSI 169 for use with food
products, these flowmeters are designed with
totally non-metallic wetted components and
food-grade materials, making them ideal for beer,
wine, spirits, coffee, soft drinks and even dosing
of syrups or flavourings in freshly blended
beverages.
At the core of Titan’s beverage flowmeters lies
a precision Pelton wheel turbine, rotating freely
on robust sapphire bearings with over-moulded
magnets detected via a Hall effect sensor. The
result is a reliable output stream of electronic
pulses that can be seamlessly integrated with
liquid monitoring or control systems, giving
real-time feedback on flow rates and dispensed
volumes.
This level of technical reliability and
repeatability – with flow ranges up to 10 litres
per minute – means that modern dispense
systems can guarantee consistent pour quality
glass after glass. No longer is the sensor simply
tallying how many pints have been poured;
it’s ensuring that every beverage meets exact
specifications, minimises waste, and enhances
customer satisfaction.
Titan’s presence across the food and beverage
landscape extends beyond pubs and beer walls
into bottling and automated batching systems.
Their flowmeters are deployed in distilleries,
soft drink manufacturing lines, coffee dispensing
equipment and even mobile bar solutions,
offering OEM partners robust tools for
both production control and end-use quality
assurance.
This evolution mirrors broader industry trends.
Beverage producers today are grappling with
rising demand for personalised drinks, freshly
mixed flavours and reduced environmental
impact. Many are shifting towards adding
certain ingredients – like flavours or CO 2
– at the point of dispense rather than at the
production plant, a strategy that delivers not just
freshness but tangible cost and waste reductions.
Titan’s flow measurement solutions are built to
support these challenges by offering accurate
dosing that respects recipe integrity and product
consistency.
Innovation at Titan doesn’t stop with traditional
turbine meters. Responding to future needs
within the drinks dispense ecosystem, the
company has also developed an ultrasonic
beverage flowmeter designed for minimal
maintenance and hygienic operation. This new
class of sensor – part of the Atrato ® ultrasonic
family of flowmeters – eliminates internal
moving parts, reducing cleaning and wear
concerns, and integrates easily into existing
systems.
Behind these product advancements is a
philosophy of collaborative innovation. Titan’s
development engineers work closely with OEM
partners – most recently RWC/John Guest –
during real-world testing, refining integrated
designs in real dispense environments where
factors like fluid compatibility, mechanical
stresses and cleaning protocols are part of
everyday use.
The result? Flowmeters that do more than
measure volume – they enhance beverage quality,
support new dispensing models, and adapt
to the demanding pace of modern food and
drink production. The industry’s move from
monitoring pure financial metrics to embracing
quality measurement reflects broader shifts in
consumer expectations, and companies like Titan
are at the forefront of enabling this transition.
In an industry defined by taste, experience and
precision, advanced measurement technology is
no longer optional – it’s fundamental. And as
dispense systems evolve, Titan’s blend of reliable
engineering and forward-thinking innovation
continues to play a key role in shaping how
beverages are crafted, measured and enjoyed
around the world.

HOSPITALITY ENTERTAINMENT SOLUTIONS COMPANY OF THE MONTH
Bringing zero-cost entertainment
to UK venues
In this issue of Food & Drink Matters,
we are pleased to feature VendNation as
our Hospitality Entertainment Solutions
Company of the Month
VendNation,
founded
in 2017 by
brothers Jonathon
and James Ashton,
has grown from a
photobooth hire
business into a
leading supplier of
entertainment vending
solutions across the
UK and Europe. Based in West Bromwich,
the company designs and builds its machines
in-house, with a skilled team of joiners and
technicians handcrafting photobooths and its
latest Interactive Darts systems. This hands-on
approach allows VendNation to maintain strict
quality control while tailoring each product to
suit the needs of individual venues.
The business was
born from a simple
insight: if people enjoy
photobooths at events,
why not make them
permanently available
in venues? The
brothers recognised
that the biggest
barriers were the
upfront investment
and ongoing maintenance. By removing both,
VendNation introduced a highly accessible,
revenue-share model that enables venues
to generate income from day one, without
financial risk or operational burden.
Its core offering remains high-quality, custombranded
photobooths that deliver instant,
professionalstandard
prints.
These are now
complemented
by its new
Interactive Darts
system for 2026,
which combines
traditional
gameplay with
advanced tracking
technology to
create a seamless,
competitive social
gaming experience.
Alongside this, the
company supplies
a wide range of
arcade and gaming
machines, including
basketball, pool, air
hockey and more,
all equipped with
contactless payment
options to maximise
ease of use.
VendNation installs
and maintains all UK
machines directly, while supporting European
clients through a network of trusted local
partners. With remote monitoring technology
and a team of rapid-response engineers, faults
can often be identified as soon as they occur,
ensuring machines remain fully operational
with minimal disruption. This commitment to
service underpins the company’s reputation for
reliability and low-maintenance entertainment
solutions.
Looking to build on
its innovation pipeline,
VendNation is also
preparing to launch
a new Interactive
Shuffleboard system.
“We’re currently
in the final stages
of developing our Interactive Shuffleboard
system, which will offer a similar blend of
authentic, genuine shuffleboard, enhanced with
engaging and easy-to-use software,” says David
Glenwright, Marketing Manager.
However, the biggest attraction to VendNation’s
services remains its
zero-cost model. David
explains, “Hospitality
businesses are being
told repeatedly that
success in 2026 means
offering more than
just food and drink,
it’s about delivering
a full experience.
The challenge is that
creating these experiences can cost thousands in
upfront investment, which many venues simply
don’t have. VendNation removes that barrier,
allowing venues to start benefiting straight
away.
“VendNation maintains over 500 machines
across the UK in venues ranging from bars and
clubs to soft play centres, markets and hotels,
all at zero cost to the operator. As cashless
payments become the norm, many venues
report lost revenue when customers can’t play
due to a lack of coins. Every VendNation
machine is fitted with a contactless card reader,
ensuring easy access and maximising takings.”
One of VendNation’s most notable
achievements came towards the end of summer
2025. Following its busiest season to date,
the company deployed photobooths at over
60 music festivals and events. This required
continuous design, installation, maintenance
and reconfiguration, as its weatherproof booths
toured the UK throughout a packed four month
period.
“The team really came together that summer,
everyone pitching in to make sure everything
went smoothly. The end result was thousands
of photographs of happy festivalgoers, and one
very tired (but proud) VendNation team!” adds
David.
Looking ahead,
VendNation is
focused on helping
venues unlock their
full potential by
enhancing their
spaces with engaging,
revenue-generating
entertainment. With a
clear focus on innovation and accessibility, the
team continues to explore the next big trend in
competitive socialising, and, crucially, how to
deliver it to as many venues as possible.

FRIDGE DOOR SOLUTIONS COMPANY OF THE MONTH
#DoorsOnFridges
In this issue of Food & Drink Matters, we are
pleased to feature DoubleCOOL as our Fridge
Door Solutions Company of the Month
olyplastic BV
pioneered
Pformed acrylic
technology in the
1960s, recognising
early on the material’s
advantages over glass,
it is safer, lighter
and offers superior
transparency. Over
the past six decades,
its acrylic glazing
solutions have become
a trusted standard
across motorhomes,
caravans and marine applications. Building on
this heritage, DoubleCOOL was established in
2014 with a clear objective: to bring energyefficient
refrigeration door solutions to the
retail sector. Its lightweight, double-pane acrylic
doors help retailers reduce energy consumption,
cut operational costs and lower their carbon
footprint.
Today, Polyplastic BV and DoubleCOOL
operate under the ownership of Lippart, a
European group with operations across the
continent. Manufacturing is based in Rotterdam,
supported by a UK headquarters and warehouse
in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, enabling efficient
nationwide service. Since launching in the UK in
2022, DoubleCOOL has seen rapid adoption,
with tens of thousands of doors installed across
hundreds of retail locations. Working with major
supermarket chains, symbol groups, independent
convenience stores and refrigeration partners,
the company delivers practical, energy-saving
solutions for chiller cabinets, driven by a simple
mission: to put doors on fridges.
The range includes two main types of doublepane
acrylic hinged doors designed to suit
most multideck chiller cabinets. The Swing 1
range is the most widely adopted option for
retrofitting open-fronted cabinets, particularly
in the convenience
sector, helping to
significantly reduce
energy consumption,
lower electricity
costs, cut carbon
emissions and extend
equipment lifespan.
As part of a broader
efficiency upgrade,
DoubleCOOL can
also enhance cabinet
performance with
LED lighting.
The Swing 2 range offers the same energysaving
benefits with a more contemporary
aesthetic, featuring semi-integrated hinges and
a choice of handles, including a bonded option
that opens to 170 degrees and incorporates
a 90-degree self-closing
function for ease of use and
replenishment. Suitable for
both OEM installation and
retrofit projects, it combines
performance with sleek
design. Both Swing 1 and
Swing 2 offer a full cabinet
solution for chiller and
Roll-In Milk Doors.
DoubleCool has recently
secured a second-term
contract with a leading UK
Supermarket as the sole
supplier of both chiller and
roll-in milk doors, further
strengthening its position
as a trusted long-term
partner with the manufacturing capacity and
supply resilience to meet the demands of new
store openings and extensive refit programmes.
Engineered for the heavy-duty requirements of
large-format stores, DoubleCool doors combine
robust yet lightweight construction with
soft-close safety hinges and a range of options
including screen printing, bumpers and floordeflector
systems.
Sharon Harrison, Managing Director
of DoubleCOOL, highlights upcoming
developments and recent progress, “We
are preparing to launch a new sliding door
solution designed specifically for smaller format
stores and environments with narrow aisle
widths, where traditional hinged doors are
not always practical. The system maximises
space, improves customer flow and supports
efficient replenishment, while still delivering the
durability, clarity and energy-saving performance
that DoubleCOOL is known for. It will open up
significant opportunities within convenience and
compact supermarket formats.
“Alongside this, we have introduced a fully
integrated door replacement service, which
has been operationally transformative for our
customers. One of the key industry challenges
has been long lead times for replacement doors,
often 12–16 weeks, leaving stores exposed both
aesthetically and from an energy efficiency
standpoint.
“To address this, we
launched a service arm
offering a 5-day SLA from
job logging through to
first-time fix. This ensures
that any broken or missing
doors are replaced quickly,
maintaining store standards
and, critically, protecting
the energy savings that
chiller doors deliver. This
combination of product
supply and rapid-response
service is a key differentiator
for DoubleCOOL and a
model we are now looking to
expand.”
From post offices and supermarkets to farm
shops, garden centres, holiday park stores and
universities, DoubleCOOL has built strong
partnerships across a wide range of sectors,
supporting buying, operational and sustainability
functions. The company also works closely with
major symbol groups and independent retailers.
In addition, DoubleCOOL is an active member
of the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS),
the Federation of Independent Retailers (the
Fed) and the Farm Retail Association, and has
recently exhibited at EuroShop and the National
Convenience Show.
Please join DoubleCOOL in their mission to put
doors on fridges. If you’re operating open chillers
we’d urge you to get in touch and discover for
yourself just how effective, affordable and simple
DoubleCOOL’s acrylic door solution is.

GIN MATTERS
The Home of
“Reyt Good Gins”
Hawkins Distillery is one of those feelgood
success stories where passion,
curiosity and a bit of “why not?” turned into
something seriously delicious. Born right in
the heart of Sheffield’s industrial heritage, this
independent craft distillery has been whipping
up unforgettable smallbatch spirits since 2019 –
and with a whole lot of personality to spare.
What makes Hawkins stand out isn’t just the
flavours, it’s the philosophy. Everything’s made
with real, natural ingredients – no artificial bells,
whistles or flavour factories – just thoughtfully
chosen botanicals, fruits, roots and more, many
of which come from local suppliers or even the
distiller’s own garden.
This isn’t your average ‘standard issue’ spirits
operation – it’s a place where craft meets
curiosity. Founder Bryn Hawkins didn’t set out
to launch a distillery; the journey began with a
hobby, a shed, and a kitchen table. Fast-forward
a few years, and the operation has outgrown
its humble beginnings, now taking residence in
a Grade II listed building on Sheffield’s Baltic
Works – the first distillery to ever grace the
historic site.
Their range is as playful as it is flavourful: from
their punchy 4Ships Navy Strength Gin and
fruity Blood Orange Gin, to whimsical hits like
Chuckleberry Vodka and seasonal delights like
Chrimbo Gin, every bottle has a story and a
smile behind it.
Customers rave about the smoothness, the
creativity and the way Hawkins spirits bring
people together – whether that’s in a cocktail, a
G&T on a sunny afternoon, or around a festival
stand where someone first says “Oooh!” after
a taste. In the world of craft drinks, Hawkins
Distillery feels like the friend you want at your
party – friendly, bold, and always up for a good
time.

HALAL MATTERS
The global significance of Halal certification
alal certification has emerged as a crucial element within the modern
Hfood industry, providing assurance, transparency, and accountability
in an increasingly globalised marketplace. As halal products extend
beyond traditional Muslim-majority regions and penetrate mainstream
retail channels, certification functions not only as a religious requirement
but also as a universal indicator of quality, safety, and ethical practices.
It assures consumers that products adhere to Islamic dietary laws while
simultaneously meeting high standards of hygiene, traceability, and
responsible sourcing, values that resonate with individuals from diverse
backgrounds. In this context, the Halal Food Authority (HFA) has
established itself as a reputable and pioneering organisation recognised
for its rigorous, science-based methodology in halal compliance.
The credibility of the HFA is founded on decades of consistently following
accreditation global Halal standards. In line with recognised accreditation
standards, the HFA has also developed its own comprehensive compliance
manuals, providing structured guidance for both auditors and
auditees. These manuals ensure consistency, technical accuracy, and
a shared understanding of expectations across the entire certification
process, reinforcing HFA’s commitment to integrity and excellence.
For consumers, the HFA logo signifies a reliable assurance that each
stage of production has undergone thorough examination with both
technical expertise and cultural sensitivity. For businesses, collaboration
with the HFA denotes alignment with an organisation that prioritises
integrity, innovation, and continuous improvement. In an environment
where food fraud, mislabelling, and supply chain vulnerabilities present
significant risks, the stringent oversight of the HFA enhances brand
trust and fosters consumer loyalty. Ultimately, halal certification is vital
as it cultivates confidence, creating a bridge between faith and industry,
tradition and contemporary standards, as well as local expectations
and global market demands. The Halal Food Authority plays an
indispensable leadership role in this mission, ensuring that halal
consistently reflects its core meaning with reliability, consistency,
and respect for the communities it serves.

COMMERCIAL BRAND DEVELOPMENT COMPANY OF THE MONTH
Redefining careers in the
drinks industry
In this issue of Food & Drink Matters, we
are pleased to feature The Brand Ambassador
Academy (BAA) as our Commercial Brand
Development Company of the Month
Founded in early 2026
by Nate Sorby, BAA
was created to bridge a
major gap within the global
drinks industry: the absence
of a structured commercial
career pathway for hospitality
professionals. Built on the
belief that talent behind the
bar can evolve into influential
leadership roles within brand
advocacy, marketing, and
sales, the Academy delivers
modern, accessible, and commercially focused
education designed specifically for the drinks
sector.
Operating from the UK through a fully digital
learning platform developed in partnership
with Expert LMS, BAA provides global access
to industry-leading training through a flexible
hybrid model. Students can engage with selfpaced
modules alongside live tutor-led sessions,
making the programme highly accessible for
hospitality workers and field-based teams.
The Academy’s guiding philosophy,
‘Empowering The Drinks Industry’, reflects
its mission to cultivate the next generation
of commercially trained drinks professionals.
BAA combines advocacy, sales, marketing,
and strategic business development into
a comprehensive three-tier qualification
framework. Courses range from entry-level
foundations to advanced leadership diplomas
designed for future industry executives.
BAA serves a broad and diverse audience,
including bartenders seeking career progression,
active brand ambassadors, sales representatives,
trade marketers, drinks
brands, distributors, and
marketing agencies. Its
corporate training solutions
also help businesses
standardise onboarding
and long-term professional
development across teams.
What distinguishes BAA from
competitors is its real-world
commercial foundation.
As a specialist department
born from Elementary Trade
Marketing, the Academy
draws upon more than 20
years of hands-on industry
experience. Through practical
assessments, sales pitching,
and strategic brand-building
exercises, students graduate
with skills immediately
applicable across beer, wine,
spirits, and non-alcoholic
beverage sectors.
Since its official launch in 2026, BAA has
quickly established itself as an innovative force
in professional drinks industry education. One
of the Academy’s most significant milestones
has been the successful launch of Levels 1 and
2 of its commercially focused qualification
framework, now open for registration to
professionals looking to
accelerate their careers in
advocacy, sales, marketing,
and brand development.
“A major focus for the
Academy is showcasing the
scale, depth, and commercial
rigor of its curriculum,” says
Nate. “Unlike traditional
drinks training programmes,
BAA delivers practical,
industry-specific learning
designed around real-world trade environments
and measurable business impact. The Academy
is also actively pursuing endorsements and
accreditation from respected professional
organisations including the Institute of Sales
Professionals (ISP), the Chartered Institute
of Marketing (CIM), and CPD accreditation
bodies, reinforcing its
ambition to become the
leading global qualification for
drinks brand representation.”
Another major development
has been BAA’s strategic
partnership with Expert LMS,
enabling the creation of a
cutting-edge digital learning
ecosystem. Additionally, the
launch of tailored corporate
enterprise packages now
allows drinks brands and agencies to build
private, co-branded learning environments
customised to their operational goals. Looking
ahead, Autumn 2026 will see the introduction
of specialist advanced pathways for roles such
as Sales Manager, Brand Ambassador, Brand
Manager, and Trade Marketeer.
With its sights set on becoming the universally
recognised global education standard for the
commercial drinks sector, alongside the rollout
of its advanced specialist career pathways later
this year, the company will also launch BAA
Community, a global networking hub and talent
platform designed to connect the Academy’s
qualified students directly with top-tier
drinks brands and employment opportunities
worldwide.
In closing, Nate shares, “We want readers to
know that you don't need
to already have a corporate
background or be backed
by a major brand to step
into this world. Whether
you are a career-changer, a
passionate bartender looking
for your next step, or an
industry veteran looking to
validate your skills, the Brand
Ambassador Academy is open
to you. Passion for the trade
is an amazing foundation, but
combining that passion with our commercial
toolkit is what will make you a sought-after,
elite expert in the global market.”

HOSPITALITY MATTERS
Mitigate fire risk through TR19 ®
Grease compliance
Professional kitchen extract ductwork
cleaning is essential for both hygiene
and fire safety, as highlighted by
Gary Nicholls, MD of Swiftclean, a
specialist in ductwork risk management.
In any kitchen, the cooking process produces
fine airborne droplets of fat, oils, and grease,
collectively known as FOGs. As this greaseladen
air passes through the extract system, it
cools, leaving behind deposits that accumulate
into a greasy layer on the interior surfaces of
the canopy and ductwork.
To align with the TR19 ® Grease specification
established by the Building Engineering Services
Association (BESA), the grease layer must not
exceed an average thickness of 200 microns –
approximately half the thickness of a standard
business card. Compliance with TR19 ® Grease
serves as a crucial fire safety measure, offering
protection to staff, patrons, and residents
in both your premises and neighbouring
establishments.
In the unfortunate event of a fire, adherence to
the TR19 ® Grease specification may be a crucial
requirement for your
building’s insurance
policy to cover
damages effectively.
This compliance is
increasingly expected
by insurers to ensure
that appropriate
measures are in
place to protect their
interests and mitigate
risks associated with
grease accumulation in
commercial kitchens.
To verify that your establishment meets
these compliance requirements, it is highly
advisable to engage
a qualified member
of the Vent Hygiene
Register (VHR) for
your specialised
cleaning needs. VHR
members are trained
professionals who have
demonstrated expertise
in ventilation hygiene,
and they can conduct
thorough cleaning
services that adhere to
industry standards.
Upon completion of their services, VHR
members can issue post-cleaning certification,
serving as tangible evidence that your
establishment has met all relevant legal
obligations. This certification not only helps
safeguard your property but also provides
valuable documentation in the event of an
insurance claim, demonstrating your proactive
approach to
fire safety and
compliance with
best practices.
Moreover, the
Regulatory
Reform (Fire
Safety) Order 2005 mandates the appointment
of a Responsible Person for your property, who
is tasked with ensuring compliance with TR19 ®
Grease as part of your fire safety protocols.
While your kitchen may be spotless, it is crucial
not to overlook the cleanliness of the extract
system, as it should be a priority in your
maintenance efforts alongside TR19 ® Grease
compliance.

PET FOOD NEWS
Sainsbury’s announces Battersea partnership
as it extends Nature’s Goodness range
Sainsbury’s has announced a three-year
partnership with dog and cat charity,
Battersea, marking the extension of the
retailer’s premium Nature’s Goodness dog
food range, which has doubled from 11 lines
to 23 since September.
Nature’s Goodness has proved a popular
addition to Sainsbury’s’ own label pet food
category. Developed with pet nutrition
experts, the range offers pet owners grain-free,
hypoallergenic recipes, crafted with carefully
selected natural ingredients and high meat
content to provide a complete and balanced
diet for dogs’ overall health and wellbeing.
Sainsbury’s has extended the Nature’s
Goodness range to include both dry and wet
dog food as well as treat options, offering
greater variety in dry food and convenient
formats for smaller dogs, including 100g
multipack pouches and 150g trays. The
partnership with Battersea means 10p from
every pack sold featuring the Battersea logo
will be donated to the charity, helping to
continue vital work caring for thousands of
dogs and cats across the UK.
Accompanied by new marketing and
packaging, including the new ‘goodness in
every bowl’ strapline, which articulates both
the expertly developed recipes and the dog
health benefits of the premium meals, the
Sainsbury’s Nature’s Goodness range now
includes five dry dog food lines, including three
new ones, all in 2kg packs: Adult Chicken,
Adult Lamb, Adult Small Dog, Adult Sensitive,
and Senior Dog. Three alu tray lines have
also been added, with 150g Chicken and Beef
variants, along with a 6 x 150g multipack.
There are also three multi-pack 12 x 100g dog
food pouches in three varieties; Adult, Senior
and Puppy and 3 new treats lines which are
launching in January.
Sainsbury’s’ decision to extend Nature’s
Goodness reflects both the success of the range,
and the continuing trend towards premium
dog food options, with a tailored approach
to answering both the needs of specific pets,
and the format preferences of pets and their
owners. The Battersea partnership sees the
retailer working with the charity to make
life better for dogs, cats, and the owners who
adore them.
Daniel Mortimer, Head of Buying – Pet at
Sainsbury’s, said, “The premium dog food
segment is performing well, and with Nature’s
Goodness, we’ve created a range that delivers
goodness in every bowl. Our recipes combine
nutrition, quality, and variety with pet owners’
love for their pets – and their desire to help
dogs in need. The partnership with Battersea
is central to that mission, and we’re proud to
feature our commitment to the charity on pack.”
The full Nature’s Goodness dog food range is
now rolling out nationally.

WATER MANAGEMENT MATTERS
Quantock Brewery protec
investment with Deep Wa
Quantock Brewery partnered with Deep
Water Blue from the outset of its new
steam generator installation to protect
a major capital investment and overcome
early operational challenges, using the vSteam
digital management platform, integrated
water treatment programme and specialist
site support to stabilise boiler water control,
dramatically cut chemical consumption to
around half its initial level, and build in‐house
confidence and competence in managing the
steam plant.
Choosing specialist support from day one
Installed in 2022, Somerset-based Quantock
Brewery operates a modern 30 hl Brew-Bloc 4
brewhouse producing around 3,200 litres per
brew and typically brewing two to three times a
week, with output flexing seasonally.
Steam sits at the heart of everything on the
hot side, from heating brewing liquor to
ensuring precise mash temperatures through
to sterilising the wort via steam‐driven heat
exchangers. During the planning stages for the
new brewhouse, the brewery chose a steam
generator rather than a conventional boiler due
to its start‐stop brewing pattern demanding
equipment that remained controllable and
chemically stable even when production slowed
or stopped.
From day one, Quantock Brewery recognised
that its new steam plant represented a major
capital outlay and required expert protection.
Lead Brewer, Daniel Enticott, explains that the
team identified a lack of knowledge as to how
to appropriately look after a steam generator.
“We deemed it prudent with such a significant
investment to work with people who have
experience in this matter,” he says. “Deep Water
Blue therefore joined the project at inception,
providing the water treatment programme, the
vSteam digital management system and the
chemicals as a single, integrated package.”
Turning early teething issues into stable
operation
Early operation highlighted just how valuable
that decision would become. Quantock Brewery
moved from older, electrically‐heated equipment
to a high‐performance steam generator and
initially navigated some unfamiliar behaviours,
including overfilling of the hotwell that silently
carried precious treatment chemicals to drain.
Daniel recalls that Deep Water Blue’s specialists
quickly spotted this. “The water going into the
hotwell was marginally over filling, plus we
had a leak, so this was causing our chemicals to
essentially spill out. It took Deep Water Blue no
time at all to spot the issues and help us correct
our process and
stabilise dosing.”
vSteam becomes the
backbone of boiler
water control
The vSteam platform
soon became the
backbone of daily
boiler water control
at Quantock Brewery,
and Daniel describes
the early learning
curve. “After Deep
Water Blue’s initial
vSteam training,
confidence grew and
the platform quickly
embedded itself into
a simple, repeatable routine of twice‐weekly
full test cycles, supported by additional on‐site
checks.
“I now find that all the readings are reassuringly
predictable, which gives us the confidence to
keep the steam generator in its ideal working
window, even when production eases back in
quieter periods,” says Daniel.
Effortless communication and context for every
reading
Communication through vSteam has proved
particularly powerful. For each test submission,
Daniel uses the
built‐in notes to
add context, such
as explaining lower
sulphite readings
after a weekend and
outlining the planned
brewing pattern for
the coming week.
He highlights this
as the feature the
brewery relies on
most, the ability
to communicate
without having to
call someone, without
having to send an
email, all while giving

ter Blue’s vSteam
time, Deep Water Blue and Quantock Brewery
have delivered a striking reduction in chemical
consumption. At the outset, unfamiliarity and
larger corrective doses pushed usage higher;
by refining routines and tuning the system, the
brewery has consistently, month upon month,
lowered its chemical usage quite significantly.
“I’d estimate that chemical use has dropped
and is in the region of half the original level,
meaning the water treatment programme is
almost certainly paying for itself,” says Daniel.
Deep Water Blue precise operational insight so
that corrective advice is fast and relevant but
never intrusive on the brewery’s time.
On‐site expertise and tailored training
Behind the scenes, Deep Water Blue’s water
treatment specialists reinforce that digital
connection with regular site visits and
structured training.
Commenting for Deep Water Blue, water
treatment specialist, George Nixon, explains
that monthly engineer inspections provide
a sounding board for any issues that arise,
particularly during Daniel’s early period
of familiarisation with the chemistry and
equipment. “As well as regular calls and site
visits, we also delivered a dedicated training day
on boiler water and steam system care, timed
for a quieter January period, which proved a
really valuable piece of training that made a big
difference for Daniel
and his understanding
of the way a brewery
balances chemical
control within the
plant.”
Chemical consumption
cut dramatically
The partnership delivers
clear financial and
operational gains. Over
Continuous improvement in chemistry and
performance
Continuous product development adds further
value for Quantock and, in late 2024, Deep
Water Blue’s chemists adjusted the chemical
programme to better suit the site and improve
alkalinity.
For Daniel, this is further proof of a healthy
relationship, “This continuous improvement
is evidence that Deep Water Blue treats each
site individually rather than simply relying on
the same chemicals working
across for all its customers
and across all the sites they
manage.”
Supporting compliance and
peace of mind
vSteam also supports
awareness of regulatory
developments by providing
an announcements area
where Deep Water Blue
shares links and explanations
for new guidance and
legislation affecting steam
systems.
While Quantock Brewery’s
insurers do not currently request sight of the
vSteam records directly, Daniel believes that
the presence of a formal water treatment
programme backed by specialist expertise and
documented data gives robust assurance that
the steam generator is being managed correctly.
Building confidence
and protecting a critical
asset
For Daniel, the most
profound outcome is
the strengthening of
on‐site knowledge and
confidence, describing
the transition to
the steam generator
as significant for a
brewery that had been
operating for nearly 18 years on very different
technology.
“Over time, Deep Water Blue’s guidance,
both online and via phone, has taken us from
an early learning phase, to looking after this
equipment to a high standard,
which is invaluable.
“This expertise protects a
critical asset that runs into
many tens of thousands of
pounds, so the value of Deep
Water Blue’s involvement is
ultimately the price of the
steam generator, and the
potential to replace one if
neglected!”
A relationship that is
“definitely” recommend
Looking ahead, Quantock
Brewery enjoys a robust,
long‐term relationship with
Deep Water Blue built on trust, responsiveness
and shared problem‐solving. The service covers
the full spectrum, from supply of optimised
chemicals and vSteam platform access, to
routine site visits and tailored training, all
aligned to the brewery’s start‐stop production
profile.
When asked whether he would recommend
Deep Water Blue and vSteam to other breweries,
Daniel’s answer is unequivocal, “I definitely
would recommend it. It’s lowered our costs
with regards to chemicals, it’s improved my
knowledge of the equipment itself to the point
where I can look after it a lot better.”
