When I think about what
STYLE really is, I don’t
start with pages or
deadlines. I start with
the people.
I’m talking about the small
business owner who didn’t believe
their story mattered—until customers
started walking in saying they saw
them in STYLE. Or the teacher
who gets stopped at school pickup
because a parent recognized her
from an article. I even think about the
nonprofit leader who told me people
finally seem to understand what
they’re trying to do.
Those are the moments that stay
with me. And at the end of the day,
that’s what this work is about: helping
us see one another a little more clearly in the place we call home.
STYLE moves a bit differently than most things today. It isn’t something
you scroll past and forget. It’s something you pick up in a quiet moment,
flip through, and leave on the coffee table for someone else to discover. It
lingers. And because of that, it feels more personal—less like background
noise and more like something you return to.
Over the past 20 years, something simple but powerful has happened—
and it’s what we’re most proud of. People recognize their own community

family-owned enrichment center focused on
hands-on science, technology, engineering,
art, and math experiences for students in
grades K–6—is now open at 1150 Suncast
Lane, Suite 4, in El Dorado Hills. Designed
to spark creativity, critical thinking, and
problem-solving through interactive, labbased
learning, the center offers everything
from engaging programs and after-school labs
to workshops and themed summer camps.
Family-owned Tran Kitchen (trankitchen.
com) recently opened at 424 East Bidwell
Street, bringing Vietnamese cuisine inspired
by the flavors of Central Vietnam to
Folsom. Expect pho with a layered broth that
balances gentle sweetness with clean, herbforward
freshness, along with a rich, slowsimmered
beef stew, and bánh mì sandwiches
served on freshly baked baguettes.
The Parlour Boutique (theparlourvintage.
com) is now open at 5357 San Juan
Avenue in Fair Oaks with a thoughtfully
curated collection of authentic vintage
clothing—primarily from the 1980s and
older—alongside handmade, vintageinspired
pieces, lush plants, and locally
made goods for the home and body.
Locally owned bakery Donuts & Coffey
(donutscoffey.com) opened its third area
location at 1780 Pleasant Grove Boulevard,
Unit 180, in Roseville. Known for its freshly
made donuts, coffee, bubble tea, refreshers,
and heartier breakfast offerings, the
shop serves both classic favorites—like
old fashioned and raised donuts—and
more inventive specialties, including
flaky croissant donuts and rich tiramisu
donuts filled with house-made cream.

Designed to create a more walkable,
open-air experience, the project will

24-hour indoor golf and training facility—
opened at 9500 Greenback Lane, Suite 35,
in Folsom. The approximately 3,450-squarefoot
space features state-of-the-art Trackman
iO golf simulators, a putting green, and
dedicated practice areas designed for both
casual players and serious golfers. Beyond solo
practice sessions, the facility also hosts leagues,

match? See midfielder Daniel Crisostomo,

action. Their season is alive and well through the
fall. For now, they play at Heart Health Park, but come spring of 2028, expect
a brand-new, state-of-the-art Republic Stadium at the Railyards. It’s slated to
have 20,000 seats, the largest capacity venue of its kind in the area.

you’re not alone. Meet three local entrepreneurs
who turned their big ideas into reality.
Chelsey Smith
COMPANY: Chelsey Smith Crowns,

BASED IN: El Dorado Hills
A trip to the hairdresser can feel like
a commitment—but what if you
could change your look at home,
effortlessly? Chelsey Smith identified
a gap in the market for easy-to-use
wigs that help women switch up
their style while boosting confidence.
Tell us about your invention and
inspiration.
My invention is a line of premium,
ready-to-wear wigs—or ‘crowns,’
as I call them—designed to make
beautiful hair accessible to everyone,
regardless of someone’s experience
with them. The inspiration came from
personal experience and listening
to women. Wigs were often either
extremely expensive, difficult to apply,
or didn’t look natural enough for
everyday wear. I saw an opportunity
to create something different. The
deeper mission was to help women feel
confident and empowered, whether
they’re dealing with hair loss, busy
lifestyles, or simply want to change
their look without damaging their
natural hair.
How long did it take to move
from your initial idea to a working
prototype?
The first working prototypes came
together within the first year, but
perfecting the product took much
longer. Even today, [after more than
seven years], I continue to refine the
designs as I learn more from our
community.
What was the biggest hurdle you
faced during development?
Building trust in a space where many
people had negative experiences
with wigs in the past was a challenge
that required a lot of education and
transparency.
Cameren Abila
COMPANY: LEVE Outdoor Co.,
leveoutdoorco.com
BASED IN: Placerville
Cameren Abila, an avid hiker, wanted to
move faster and cover longer distances
on the trail. After transitioning to
ultralight backpacking, he noticed that
most layering systems were either too
heavy and bulky or too hot for active
movement, lacking breathability. So, he
began making apparel in his living room
alongside his grandmother, with the goal
of creating the lightest, most efficient
layering system possible.
Tell us about your invention and
inspiration.
The goal was to create a piece that

replaces multiple layers. Our core
product is the Alpha 90 Hoody, an
ultralight, highly breathable insulation
layer designed for movement. It’s made
from Polartec Alpha Direct, which
can be worn directly against the skin
without a liner. It breathes exceptionally
well while you’re moving—so you
don’t overheat—but still traps enough
warmth when you slow down or stop.
Beyond hoodies, we also make other
ultralight fleece and technical apparel,
including jackets, pants, and beanies.
How long did it take to move
from your initial idea to a working
prototype?
The first version came together quickly,
but we’ve gone through multiple
iterations over the past couple of
years. It’s been a constant process of
testing, gathering feedback from the
community, and refining.
What was the biggest hurdle you
faced during development?
Sourcing materials has been one
of the biggest challenges. On the
financial side, growing a productbased
business means constantly
reinvesting in inventory and equipment
while trying to keep momentum—it’s a
continuous balancing act.
Advice for Aspiring Inventors
» Start before you feel ready and don’t wait for things to be
perfect. Your first version won’t be great, most likely, but that’s
part of the process.
» Stay close to the people who will use what you’re making.
“When people feel connected to your mission, they become
part of the journey and help you improve the product along the
way,” says Chelsey Smith.
» Keep things small and scrappy as long as you can. That flexibility is
a huge advantage early on.
» Start by solving a real problem. The best innovations come from
listening—pay attention to what people are struggling with and
what existing products aren’t working well.
» Be willing to try things that might not work.
» Most importantly, have fun! Building something new takes hustle,
curiosity, and a sense of humor.

Their solution? A smarter, simpler
bedding design.
Tell us about your invention and
inspiration.
Snap Duvet is a duvet cover with a snapoff
top layer that lets you remove the top
in seconds instead of wrestling with a
traditional duvet cover. Anyone who has
ever tried to stuff a comforter into a duvet
knows it’s basically a full-body workout.
We wanted something more efficient that
cuts down on washes, is eco-friendly,
and easier to manage.
How long did it take to move
from your initial idea to a working
prototype?
We spent about a year going through
different iterations, before getting
to the product we sell today. We
realized we could also change the
look of a room by offering different
colors and patterns. This added one
more benefit for our customers and
really expanded the possibilities for
Snap Duvet into uses like real estate
staging and hotel rooms.
What was the biggest hurdle you
faced during development?
Securing the patent was a major
milestone. The process takes time and
there are no guarantees, but protecting
the idea was important to us. There’s
never a guarantee you’ll be awarded a
patent, but thankfully we were.

Spotlight on
Mary Pivetti

Watercolor and mixed-media artist
Mary Pivetti calls art a powerful healer—
something she knows from experience.
Thirty-six years ago, she was assaulted,
an event that left her living with
unrelenting fear for years.
“I tried many things—medication,
counseling, even unhealthy coping
mechanisms—but nothing brought
lasting relief,” she recalls. “Art was
different. When I create, I lose myself in
the process for hours. It becomes a kind
of meditation where my mind finally
quiets and I can experience moments
of peace.”
Today, as an Auburn arts
commissioner and community arts
educator, Pivetti is deeply committed
to expanding access to the arts and
sharing that sense of peace with others,
especially veterans. She also works
to create opportunities for emerging
artists, helping them build careers while
fostering meaningful connections.
“Many people believe they aren’t
‘artists,’ but creativity belongs to
everyone,” she says. “When people
give themselves permission to explore
it without judgment or pressure,
something powerful can happen.”
Over the past year, Pivetti has
launched several programs to remove
barriers to the arts. In April, she hosted a
three-day nature-based workshop at The
Flower Farm in Loomis, with scholarship
seats reserved for veterans. She also
teaches watercolor classes designed to
help adults reconnect with creativity,
allowing veterans to attend for free. In
addition, she developed Placer County’s
Artist Resources & Training (A.R.T.) series,
an initiative that prepares emerging
artists to participate in open studio
tours, galleries, and public exhibitions.
Pivetti’s art can be seen on her

(@mary_pivetti_art); oftentimes, it’s
also on display at Makers Paradise in
Reno and North Tahoe Arts in Kings
Beach and Tahoe City. On June 7, she’ll
be showing her work at the Auburn Art
Walk—a community-wide celebration of
art, creativity, and local businesses.
How did you get your start as an artist?
It came from an unexpected moment
in seventh grade. A friend casually
drew Daisy Duck in the margin of her
paper, and I remember being completely

amazed. When I asked how she did it,
she shrugged and said, ‘It’s just a bunch
of lines.’ That comment changed the
way I saw everything. Suddenly drawings
weren’t mysterious—they were shapes
and lines anyone could learn to see.
Still, I took the practical route and
studied marketing in college. Later,
I spent my ‘second career’ teaching
technology and graphic arts at the
college level. It wasn’t until I retired
that I truly gave myself permission to
focus on art for its own sake. Without
the pressure of making it a career,
something opened up creatively.
Looking back, art was always there—
waiting patiently for the moment I
finally let it take center stage.
What appeals to you about watercolor?
It asks me to relinquish control. That’s
a challenge for me—and part of the
excitement. Unlike other mediums,
watercolor has a mind of its own. The
water moves the pigment in ways that
can’t always be predicted, and learning
to work with that instead of against
it is both risky and exhilarating. It’s
a balance between intention and
surrender, and that tension keeps me
coming back to it.
What other mediums do you use?
While watercolor is a favorite, I’m also
drawn to mixed-media work because
it allows me to explore materials in
unexpected ways. I enjoy combining
art with texture, natural elements, and
found objects.
Where do you find your inspiration?
Everywhere, but especially in nature.
The beauty of the natural world touches
my soul—particularly in spring and fall,
when color, light, and transformation
are most visible. I’m also inspired by the
unrealized potential in everyday objects.
I love taking items that have already
lived a life and transforming them into
something new. Color and light move
me as well—the way light filters through
leaves, reflects on water, or shifts across
a landscape. And sometimes inspiration
simply comes from the challenge
itself—the desire to recreate something
beautiful, atmospheric, or fleeting, and
to capture the feeling of it through art.
Beyond your own art, you’re investing
in your community as an educator
and advocate.
Art and teaching have always been deeply
connected for me. Creating art is a way I

heal myself, and through
my work I’m able to reach
people I may never meet—
viewers who encounter a
piece and feel something
meaningful from it.
Teaching expands that
impact in a powerful way. I
think of it as having a fractal effect. When
I share the healing and expressive power
of art with students, that experience
spreads outward through them to
others in their lives. Teaching teachers
compounds that fractal effect. When
educators carry the healing power of
creativity and expression
into their own classrooms,
the ripple effect multiplies
many times over.
Serving as an arts
commissioner allows me
to extend that influence even further.
In that role, I support artists, strengthen
the creative community, and encourage
opportunities for art to reach even
more people. For me, it’s all connected:
healing, creating, teaching, and building
community through art.

stretch longer, so
does the time we
spend outdoors. But
with that extra sun
exposure comes
increased risk to
your skin. From
dehydration to UV
damage, summer
can take a toll if
you’re not paying
attention. We asked
local medical and
nutrition experts to
weigh in on the most
common summer
skin concerns and
how to protect
yourself. Here’s what
they had to say.
What should you be doing every day to protect your skin in the summer?
Nigah Patel, FNP, a board-certified family nurse practitioner at Marshall’s Family
Medicine practice, keeps it simple: consistency matters more than complexity.
“The most important foundation of summer skin care is protection and
consistency,” she says. “I recommend [applying] broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher
sunscreen every morning. Reapply as needed.”
She adds that a well-rounded routine goes beyond sunscreen. “Cleanse the
skin gently to remove sweat, oil, and environmental debris; use a lightweight,
non-comedogenic moisturizer to maintain the skin barrier; stay well hydrated
to support skin health from within; and incorporate antioxidants (like vitamin
C) to help defend against environmental damage,” she says.
Stephanie Jacks, MD, a pediatric dermatologist with Kaiser Permanente
Roseville, encourages an approach with a focus on practical habits that go beyond
sunscreen. “Wear protective clothing like hats and rash guards and stay in the
shade during the middle of the day when the sun is the strongest,” she says.
Are you probably making sunscreen mistakes?
Short answer: yes. Patel sees the same issues repeatedly. “People skipping
sunscreen on cloudy days or when indoors near windows; not reapplying
sunscreen throughout the day; using heavy, pore-clogging products that can

worsen acne in heat and
humidity; over-exfoliating,
which can compromise the
skin barrier and increase sun
sensitivity; and assuming
darker skin tones don’t
require sun protection (they
absolutely do),” she says.
And perhaps the
biggest mistake? Not using enough
sunscreen. “Most people only use
about 25-50% of the amount needed
for full protection,” Patel says.
Dr. Jacks adds another reality
check. “Don’t let a high SPF give you
false confidence,” she says. “Even the
highest SPF sunscreens will wash or
wear off as you get wet or sweaty.”
How much sunscreen is enough—
and how often should you
reapply?
This is where most people fall short.
According to Oma N. Agbai, MD,
FAAD, associate clinical professor of
dermatology and founding director
of multicultural dermatology and
hair restoration at UC Davis Health
(omaagbaimd.com), “the ‘shot glass
rule’ is outdated and may lead to
under-application. The right amount
is enough sunscreen to create a
visible, even film over all exposed
skin before it’s fully rubbed in. It
should be reapplied every two hours,
and immediately after swimming,
sweating, or towel drying.”
Patel adds that “sunscreen should
be applied 15 minutes before sun
exposure” and reminds people to pay
special attention to commonly missed
areas like the ears, neck, scalp (if
exposed), tops of feet, and lips.
Is sunscreen enough on its own?
Not even close. “Sunscreen is just one
part of a broader strategy,” Patel says.
“Seek shade when possible, and
wear protective clothing such as
wide-brimmed hats, long sleeves,
and sunglasses. It’s also best to limit
direct sun exposure during peak UV
hours, typically between 10 a.m. and
2 p.m.,” Dr. Agbai advises.
Dr. Jacks offers a similar
mindset—with a lifestyle twist. “If
possible, spend time in pools and at
the beach in the morning (before 10
a.m.) and/or the late afternoon (after 3
p.m.),” she says.
What ingredients should you
look for—or avoid—in summer
skincare?
Patel recommends focusing on
ingredients that support and
protect the skin barrier, including
“vitamin C (antioxidant protection),
niacinamide (helps with oil control
and inflammation), hyaluronic acid
(lightweight hydration), and zinc
oxide or titanium dioxide (mineral
sun protection),” she says.
Dr. Jacks leans toward simplicity.
“I favor the ‘mineral’ or ‘physical
blocker’ sunscreens where titanium
dioxide and zinc oxide are the active
ingredients. The best sunscreen,
though, is one that you will use and
consistently apply,” she says. “Spray
sunscreens are more difficult to
apply correctly, so I prefer creams,
lotions, or gels applied directly on
the skin.”
Does what you eat and drink
affect your skin?
Absolutely—and more than most people
realize. Mia Khera, MS, RD, assistant
director of Diabetes, Nutrition Education
(DNE) and Clinical Nutrition at Marshall,
emphasizes hydration first. “Hydration
is essential during hot summer months
when fluid losses increase through
sweat,” she says. “Hydration supports
the skin barrier, helping to maintain
moisture and elasticity, thus preventing
dry and dull skin.”
As a general guidance, aim for
about 11.5 cups of fluids (92 ounces) per
day for women and 15.5 (124 ounces)
for men, including water from foods.
What you eat matters, too. Khera
recommends nutrients that help
combat UV damage:
• Vitamin C (citrus, strawberries, bell
peppers)
• Vitamin E (almonds, spinach, avocado)
• Polyphenols (berries, green tea,
dark chocolate)
• Carotenoids (carrots, tomatoes,
watermelon)
On the flip side, certain habits
can work against you. “Alcohol can
cause increased dehydration and
impair skin barrier function, may
trigger redness or inflammation,
and worsen conditions like acne or
rosacea,” she says.
And while caffeine is less
of a villain, it still has limits.
“Caffeine is a mild diuretic,
which can slightly increase
fluid loss, but is generally not
dehydrating if consumed in
moderation,” she says.
What should parents know
about keeping kids safe in the
sun?
Kids’ skin is especially vulnerable
and early damage adds up.
Patel encourages building
habits early. “Keep infants and
young children out of direct sun
whenever possible,” she says.
“Dress them in protective clothing,
including hats and rash guards.
Apply sunscreen regularly and
reapply often, especially during
outdoor play. Model good sun
behavior—children learn by
observing adults.”
Dr. Jacks adds a practical
parenting tip. “It can be difficult
when children are active and
busy with sports or other
activities to remember to reapply
sunscreen every two hours, but
using a timer on your phone can
help you remember,” she says.
And when it comes to infants?
“It’s best to keep young babies, less
than six months old, in the shade as
much as possible,” Dr. Jacks says.
To summer-ize, summer
skin safety is about building
consistent, realistic habits. Wear
sunscreen (enough of it), reapply
it more often than you think, stay
hydrated, and don’t rely on one
product to do all the work.

2.6 miles round trip.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL:
Easy to moderate. Mostly dirt trails with
gentle hills offer just enough of a leg burn
without leaving you questioning your
decisions. Sneakers are perfectly fine, and
bringing water—and maybe a little sweet
treat for the summit—is highly encouraged.
WHY WE LOVE IT:
Wildflower-covered hills, rugged coastal
cliffs, and sweeping ocean views make
every turn feel postcard-worthy. Surfers
carve waves below, and on lucky days,
whales make an appearance offshore. At
the top, you’ll find plenty of scenic spots to
pause for a picnic, dessert break, or simply
a moment to soak it all in. Bonus: continue
a few minutes south along Highway 1
to Devil's Slide Trail for even more dramatic
cliffside vistas.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
Dogs are welcome on leash. Parking fills up
fast on weekends, so arriving early is your
best bet. And while the sun may be shining,
Pacifica’s coastal breeze loves to keep
things interesting—layers are essential.

trends right now is couples choosing a
first look paired with private vows before
the ceremony. It creates an intimate,
emotional space where they can be

A: When I evaluate my patients, I

For more than 40 years, SWSS has been teaching swim

My name is Jennifer Tommasini, the owner/director of The Gift of
Kids Daycare and Preschool. I’ve lived in El Dorado Hills for 21 years
and I have four children.
My journey into the childcare field began in 1999 when I was left
disappointed in my search for ”the right” childcare for my son. After
going through many programs and with my daughter on the way
(now working with Gift of Kids), I began to reflect upon my family’s
needs. It was then that I changed my career focus and ventured
into childcare. My mission is to provide a nurturing, loving, safe and
educational environment for every child.
In September 2000, I opened my home to start a daycare. I
immediately knew that this was my calling. Everything felt so
natural. I went back to school full time for early childhood education
and started my own preschool program that incorporated homecooked
meals, planned outings, and practiced an advanced
curriculum with structured activities that fostered learning.
In 2007 I opened a small pre-school with 60 families while
continuing my in-home daycare. In 2010 I expanded again,
bringing my preschool and in home-daycare under one roof- The
Gift of Kids and Preschool is now located off Labrobe Road in
Business Park 1. It has been a dream to serve so many children
and give families the satisfaction I never felt when my son was
in daycare. I pride myself on offering a safe place for families to
bring their children.
The Gift of Kids currently has 45 wonderful, loving, professional
teachers and over 300 children. We provide care for infants,
preschoolers, private kindergarten, and transport to local
elementary schools. Although the size seems large, the
classrooms have a homey feel where the teachers truly
care about each child’s development. We work together on
communicating with parents and developing each child’s
individual needs. It delights me that so many children have the
opportunity to experience our program.
After 25+ years in business, I am so proud to announce that we
have officially opened our SECOND location, The Gift of Kids
Nook!

Who is Dr. Sue?
I have had love, respect, and a fascination for
animals and nature all my life. Pets have been
an important addition to my family. We had

A Modern Mediterranean Makeover

Here in our region, a modern Mediterranean home has been
reimagined with a lighter, more refined sensibility—one that
trades heavy, dated interiors for calm, elevated spaces designed
around daily rituals.
Led by Lauren Jacobsen Interiors (laurenjacobseninteriors.com), the
full-scale renovation focused on three key areas of the home: the primary
bathroom, guest bathroom, and laundry room. While the home’s original
architecture offered character and structure, the interiors no longer
reflected how the homeowners wanted to live.
“Each space was thoughtfully reimagined with new flooring, custom
cabinetry, plumbing fixtures, lighting, and selective structural adjustments,
including the addition of new walls to better define and enhance
functionality,” Jacobsen says. The goal was clear from the outset: “create a
series of clean, refined interiors with a serene, spa-like sensibility—spaces
that feel both elevated and
intentional, while remaining true to
the home’s architectural integrity
and subtly modernizing its overall
aesthetic,” she says.
Completed over approximately
three months, the project came in at around
$150,000. “The budget was thoughtfully allocated
across all three spaces, prioritizing high-impact
materials, custom elements, and tailored solutions
that would enhance both the visual experience
and day-to-day functionality,” Jacobsen says.
Among the three spaces, the guest bathroom
underwent perhaps the most dramatic
transformation. Originally confined by an
inefficient layout and outdated architectural
elements, it presented an opportunity for a
complete overhaul. “The original layout felt
constrained, with a cramped vanity and an arched
transition that no longer served a functional or
aesthetic purpose...We reimagined the space by
introducing a partition wall, which allowed for
the installation of a sculptural floating marble
vanity,” she says. “The room was then enveloped
in wallpaper, creating a rich, moody atmosphere
that feels both intimate and luxurious. The result
is a space that feels entirely redefined—layered,
intentional, and visually striking.”
In contrast, the primary bathroom leans
into softness and cohesion. Dark finishes and
traditional materials were replaced with a
continuous plaster application, including a fully
plastered shower, creating a seamless effect and
a quiet, spa-like retreat where texture does the
heavy lifting. Warm wood cabinetry and crisp
quartz countertops introduce balance, while
streamlined fixtures keep the overall look clean
and modern.
Material selection played a central role
throughout the home. “Two standout elements
in this project are the Calacatta Vagli marble
featured in the guest bathroom and the custom
Tadelakt plaster shower in the primary bathroom,”
Jacobsen says. “Both materials bring a sense of
depth, texture, and artistry to the spaces, elevating
them beyond the expected and contributing to the
overall sense of quiet luxury.”

residential design—was approached
with the same level of care. Neutral
cabinetry, refined hardware, and a
luminous backsplash transformed the
space into one that feels integrated
with the rest of the home rather than
purely utilitarian.
Functionality, however, remained
just as important as aesthetics.
“Balancing style with function begins
with a deep understanding of how the
client lives within their space,” Jacobsen
says. “From there, every design decision
is informed by both aesthetic vision and
practical need—whether it’s materiality,
spatial planning, or the integration of
storage and electrical components.”
That philosophy is evident in even
the smallest details. “For example, in
the laundry room, we incorporated a
dedicated cabinet with an integrated
outlet to house and charge a cordless
vacuum—an often-overlooked but
essential daily item,” she says. “In
my work, no detail is too small. It’s
the thoughtful integration of these
elements that allow a space to feel not
only beautiful, but effortless and highly
functional.”
The level of customization extended
beyond cabinetry and finishes, too.
“These clients have highly specific
routines, which meant every detail
needed to be carefully considered
and executed with intention. Even
seemingly minor elements, such as the
placement of hooks, were customized—
not to a standard height, but to what
would best serve the clients’ daily use.
This level of detail required constant
communication, collaboration, and a
commitment to revisiting decisions to
ensure they were exactly right,” she says.
Collaboration was central to the
project from start to finish. Working
closely with the homeowners,
as well as Kenneth Development
(kennethdevelopment.com), the design
team translated inspiration into a
cohesive, livable reality.
“The homeowners came into the
project with a strong and well-defined
vision for how they wanted their spaces
to feel,” she says. “At the outset, we spent
time reviewing inspiration imagery
together, identifying not only what
resonated visually, but why.”
From there, the process became
one of refinement and execution. “My
role was to translate those ideas into a
cohesive and highly tailored design—
one that captured their aesthetic while
seamlessly integrating the functional
details required for their daily lives,”

Jacobsen says. “Design at this level is
inherently collaborative, and it takes a
unified effort between client, designer,
and trades to ensure that every detail is
executed with precision and intention.”
For Jacobsen, the project also
offered an opportunity for continued
growth. “What continues to stand
out to me—even after years in this
industry—is how much there is to
learn with every project,” she says.
“This particular renovation provided
the opportunity to work with materials
I hadn’t previously specified, and to
learn directly from the trades about
their installation and long-term care.”
That hands-on experience, she
notes, is invaluable. “It not only
deepens your understanding of the
materials, but ultimately results in
more thoughtful and elevated design,”
she says.
The finished home reflects that
philosophy at every turn. By honoring
the structure’s Mediterranean roots
while introducing a cleaner, more
contemporary palette, the renovation
achieves a balance that feels both
timeless and distinctly modern.
More importantly, it transforms
everyday routines—getting ready in
the morning, doing laundry, hosting
guests—into moments of calm,
intention, and quiet luxury.

place. Enter OBO’ Italian Table &
Bar—not so much a replacement as a
reinvention by the same owners. With
its breezy Italian flair, OBO’ gives the
space a new personality. Where there
was once café comfort, there’s now a
fresh, modern trattoria.
The eatery effortlessly fits any
occasion—whether it’s a lively lunch
with friends, an impromptu date night,
a relaxed family dinner, or anything
in between. Expect crowd-pleasing
classics, such as lemony chicken piccata,
meatballs in rich tomato sauce, and
creamy polenta. Those who frequented
Sellands will find a comforting sense of
familiarity. The counter service remains,
keeping things fuss-free, but the menu
and décor have been thoughtfully
refreshed. The ambiance strikes a balance

My husband and I visited on a recent
weekday evening, and the dining room
was bustling. With so many tempting
options, we took the go-big-or-go-home
approach, ordering a wide variety of dishes
to share. An Aperol Spritz and Negroni,
followed by a towering Caesar salad—
OBO’s over-the-top version adds kale,
chard, fried shallots, and a soft-boiled egg
to the classic components—set the tone for
an indulgent evening.
The short rib pappardelle was pure
comfort—wide ribbons of house-made
pasta tangled with slow-braised, forktender
short rib ragu and pancetta, all
coated in a savory red sauce with parmesan
and toasted breadcrumbs. My Italian
husband quickly declared that he would
return just for that dish.
With the brick oven visible from the
dining room, we couldn’t resist trying
a classic pepperoni pie, which arrived
with a beautifully blistered, wood-fired
crust and a generous amount of crisped
pepperoni. But the surprising standout
was the basil pesto & lemon pizza, an
addictive entrée featuring herby pesto,
creamy mozzarella, ricotta, and parmesan
cheeses, fresh basil, and thinly sliced
lemon bursting with flavor.
Meanwhile, the hero sandwich—
layered with prosciutto, salami, pepperoni,
melty cheeses, and fresh veggies, plus
lemon mayo, Calabrian chili, and red wine
vinaigrette—was like a meat lover’s pizza
on a toasted hoagie; while the burrata
and tomato confit sandwich was a lighter,
summery counterpart.
Naturally, we couldn’t leave without
sampling a sweet treat—or two. OBO’s
tiramisu—served playfully in a jar—was
classic and creamy, with layers of espressosoaked
ladyfingers and mascarpone. And
their carrot cake was truly perfect, with a
moist, spicy cake and indulgent—but not
overly sweet—cream cheese frosting and
candied walnuts.
We left OBO’ deeply satisfied and
with leftovers for days. Still,
we barely scratched the
surface of the menu.
That said, one thing
is non-negotiable: the
short rib pappardelle.
Rich and comforting,
it’s the dish we’d happily
return for again and again.

GIRLS LOVE MAIL
Founded in 2011, Girls Love Mail
distributes handwritten letters
of encouragement to women
newly diagnosed with breast
cancer. Volunteers from around
the world pen heartfelt notes
and mail them to the Folsombased
nonprofit, where each
one is carefully reviewed,
packaged in a special
envelope, and sent to more
than 170 cancer centers across
the country for distribution
to patients. To date, GLM has
delivered more than 300,000
letters—meaning more
than 300,000 women have
received a message of hope
during one of life’s most
difficult moments.

Sue McGinness
What inspired you to volunteer for
Girls Love Mail?
I have several friends who also
volunteer at GLM, as well as a few
who have been—or are currently—
undergoing treatment for breast
cancer. It immediately struck me as a
meaningful cause.
What do your volunteer duties
entail?
I primarily read the letters submitted
by volunteer writers to ensure
they meet GLM’s guidelines.
Is there training required?
Yes, there is extensive
training provided, as well as
opportunities to shadow other
volunteers. I didn't start with
reading letters; I first stuffed
envelopes and learned about the
nonprofit's mission.
What’s the time commitment?
The time commitment is flexible. I
normally volunteer anywhere from
60-75 minutes a week.
What’s been the best day of
volunteering so far?
Some of the letters are incredibly
moving—especially those written
by breast cancer survivors. Other
times, we receive notes from
elementary school students that
completely brighten my day. I’m
constantly inspired by the kindness
and compassion people share
through these letters.
What’s one of the biggest
challenges?
Balancing a careful, critical review
of each letter against the guidelines
while still allowing myself to enjoy
the content.
