to grow in the coming years. However,
working alone is becoming increasingly

EarthSense, the air quality expert, today announced that it
is working with Cheltenham Borough Council to evidence
the impact of air quality initiatives such as the ‘Care for our
Air’ campaign, currently in place across Cheltenham, and
to help educate local schoolchildren about the impact of air
pollution. The two ZephyrÒ air quality monitors, which have
been named ‘Monty’ and ‘Molly,’ are supplied by EarthSense
and owned by the Council. They are touring schools around
Cheltenham and surrounding areas, as part of the Council’s
Care for our Air educational campaign.
The Care for our Air project aims to raise awareness of air
pollution and support schools in reducing pollution at their
gates. Monty and Molly have been installed at eight local
schools to date, providing detailed air quality measurements
every 15 minutes of NO2, NO, O3, PM1, PM2.5, PM10. The data
is viewable on EarthSense’s MyAir® air quality platform where
teachers, children and parents can log on to see the real-time
air quality data plus additional meteorological data such as
temperature, humidity, wind and rain to provide additional
context. So far, over 3,000 schoolchildren have attended
workshops on the effects of air pollution and the Council is
targeting around 20 schools to get involved with the campaign.

is supporting Aldi’s nationwide
re-roofing programme
When Aldi decided to centralise its
approach to roof refurbishments,
it marked a significant change in
the way the supermarket chain
manages its growing property
estate. Previously, re-roofing had
been handled on a store-by-store
basis, resulting in mixed materials,
varying specifications and
inconsistent performance across
the UK. Aldi sought a standardised
specification that would deliver
consistent quality, reliability and
visual appeal across its national portfolio.
To make this happen, Aldi turned to its
appointed design team, including The
Harris Partnership as architects and Edge
as quantity surveyors, both of whom have
extensive experience supporting the brand’s
refurbishment and new-build programmes.
A collaborative design meeting was held
to explore the most effective approach
to roof replacement across the estate,
with input from key stakeholders helping

Roofing apprentices
demonstrate resilience
against mental and physical
pressure at work
Roofing apprentices from across the
UK are opening up about the challenges
of working in construction, revealing
a generation unafraid to discuss the
pressures of the job – and determined to
rise to the challenge.
The insights were gathered through
applications for the 2025 BMI
Apprentice of the Year competition, held
annually by Redland pitched roofing and
Icopal flat roofing systems manufacturer,
BMI UK & Ireland. Now in its eighth year,
the competition celebrates the UK’s top
roofing talent, recognising technical
ability, mindset, professionalism and
personal development.
One theme that stood out this year is
the pressures of life on site, with 65%
of respondents referencing the mental
and physical demands of the job. Rather
than being discouraged, many described
a strong sense of pride, purpose and
personal growth.
The apprentice experiences echo wider
industry concerns. A 2025 study by the
Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)
found that 94% of UK construction
workers experienced stress, 83%
suffer from anxiety, 60% have dealt with
depression, and 27% have had suicidal
thoughts.
Alongside mental health, 62% of
apprentices talked about the reality of
hard work, referencing the early starts,
tough weather and high standards that
are necessary in the industry. Resilience
and timekeeping were considered just as
valuable as the practical skills applicants
had developed in training.

(LEIA) has appointed Laura Webb as its new

BCIS All-in Tender Price
Index Panel reports mixed
construction outlook for 2026
Tender prices increased by an
estimated average of 0.7% between
3Q2025 and 4Q2025, according to
the latest data from the Building
Cost Information Service (BCIS).
The increase resulted in 2.5% annual
growth in the BCIS All-in Tender Price
Index (TPI).
This was agreed at the latest meeting
of the BCIS All-in TPI Panel by cost
consultants from firms involved in
multiple tenders each quarter.
Newly updated five-year forecasts
further estimate a 17% increase in
the BCIS All-in TPI between 4Q2025
and 4Q2030.
BCIS has also forecast a 16% rise in
total new work output between 2025
and 2030.
Less than one-third (29%) of panellists
said their pipeline of projects going to
tender over the next year increased
slightly in 4Q2025, with a further 14%
reporting a significant increase.
A total of 43% reported no change in
their anticipated pipeline in the fourth
quarter while 14% said it had reduced
slightly.
Contractor appetite to tender has
increased, with 71% of panellists finding
contractors ‘quite eager’ to tender,
up from 54% in 3Q2025.
Only 7% said contractors were less
eager, down from 31% in the previous
quarter, while 21% found their desired
number of tenderers after searching.
None reported contractors as either
unwilling or very eager to tender.

CSCS data reveals the UK construction workforce
is becoming younger and more highly-skilled
The Construction Skills
Certification Scheme (CSCS)
has published new data
revealing significant shifts
in the make up of the UK
construction workforce, with
a larger proportion of young
people entering the industry
and a growing proportion of
on-site workers operating at
skilled and advanced levels.
Cardholder data shows that in 2025, more than one in
four (25.16%) CSCS cards
are now held by individuals
under the age of 30. This is
up from just 17% in 2021 –
marking an 8% increase in
the share of 20-29-year-olds
holding CSCS cards in just
four years.
The data challenges the
prevailing narrative that fewer young people are
choosing careers in construction. One explanation for
the shift could be changing career priorities, with more
young people seeking skills based, AI resilient roles
offering clear progression routes.
CSCS data also shows an uptick of skilled workers across

powers Scotland’s
first Zero Bills homes
Octopus Energy has officially brought its gamechanging
Zero Bills revolution to Scotland, launching
the country’s first eligible homes where householders
won’t have to pay a penny for their home energy bills for
at least 10 years.
All 57 properties at the Tranent Grove development in
North Dundee with Discovery Homes will be eligible for
Octopus Energy’s ground-breaking Zero Bills tariff as
an optional upgrade for homebuyers*, marking the first
Zero Bills site north of the border.
Launched in 2022, Zero Bills allows customers to move
into homes packed with cutting-edge green tech –
including a heat pump, battery and solar panels – with no
home energy bills for at least 5-10 years, guaranteed**.
The news comes hot on the heels of Octopus Zero
Bills’ recent launch in France, which marked the fourth
country to join the global Zero Bills movement, after the
UK, Germany and New Zealand.
So far, Octopus Energy has approved Zero Bills
eligibility for over 5,000 homes through partnerships
with leading developers, covering affordable and private
