QUESTO
Questa edizione
dell’AMAgazine è intrisa
d’estate – e di storie che
raccontano chi siamo.
Abbiamo riletto e narrato
MARKUS PROMBERGER
per te la leggenda del
MANAGING DIRECTOR
Regno di Fanes, il mito
dolomitico per eccellenza.
Una storia legata indissolubilmente all’identità ladina,
In quegli
stessi luoghi, oggi racchiusi nel Parco Naturale Fanes-
Oggi, a quasi quattro
E come cambia
guardare oltre.
raccontiamo. Tante prospettive diverse, un’unica anima.
Buona lettura,
Markus Promberger
What shapes us. This issue of AMAgazine is not only
packed with everything summer, but also with various
features on what defines us as people. From the Legend
of the Kingdom of Fanes to legendary hikes in the Fanes-
Senes-Braies Nature Park, it bridges the gap between our
origins, surroundings and living in the now. Our identity
is shaped by our environment – by life in San Vigilio and
by the people who bring AMA Stay to life. Our work also
plays a part – it provides a sense of purpose and identity.
At AMA Stay, we talk about work-love balance based on
the belief that work is not the opposite of life, but rather
an integral part of it. The key is to love what you do. AMA
Stay is a place where focus and exchange along with
retreat and community intertwine – indoors and outdoors,
in workshops and during shared experiences in the mountains.
In a nutshell, this edition brings together a
variety of perspectives on what makes us who we are today.

Was uns prägt.
was man tut.

A CONVERSATION ABOUT
ARCHITECTURE, IDENTITY AND
CULTURAL SUSTAINABILITY
- INTERVIEW WITH ARCHITECTS THOMAS
DUREGGER AND PHILIPP LANTHALER FROM
BERGUNDTAL
When AMA Stay opened back in winter 2022,
it was regarded as one of the first hotels in the
Dolomites to consider work and vacation as a
single, coherent concept. Workation, coworking
and community were terms that still sounded
quite new at the time. The Brunico-based
architectural studio, BERGUNDTAL, gave this
concept a form: minimalist, open and carefully
attuned to landscape and place. Four years later,
we are back with architects Thomas Duregger
and Philipp Lanthaler to ask the question: what
happens when architecture begins to be lived in?
Four years of AMA Stay: When you walk through the
building today – what do you feel?
Thomas: Above all, you can sense that the building has
taken on a life of its own. Architecture is never really finished.
It only truly comes into being when people use it, live and
work in it. That is exactly what has happened here. Spaces
are adapted and changed according to the people who
occupy them. What is interesting is that much of it is actually
being used just as we had envisaged. At the same time, new
dynamics, new ways of doing things and new relationships
are constantly emerging. It is this interplay that brings
architecture to life.
THOMAS DUREGGER
ARCHITECT AT BERGUNDTAL
PHILIPP LANTHALER
ARCHITECT AT BERGUNDTAL
Are there times when the way a building is used surpasses
its design? And if so, how resilient is AMA Stay to that?
Philipp: Use is always more dynamic than planning. Architecture
evolves over many years. Social trends or the way
people utilise spaces can, by contrast, develop very quickly.
That is why it was important to us from the outset for AMA
Stay to have an open design. Many areas are designed to
be flexible, meaning that spaces can be used in different
ways and transitions are fluid. This openness makes a
building resilient, which implies it can adapt to change
without losing its identity.
Back then, you deliberately opted for a minimalist, timeless
approach. How does good interior design stand the
test of time?
Thomas: Good interior design never really grows old – it
simply develops character. Timelessness isn’t created by
trends, but through simplicity, authentic materials and clear
proportions. When spaces possess these qualities, they are
able to stand the test of time. Signs of wear are not viewed
as negative, but rather as something which tells a story of
life and use. Wood and natural materials in particular, often
become even more expressive as the years go by.
What will ‘Architecture from South Tyrol’ mean in 2026?
Is there a distinct architectural approach – or rather a
multitude of parallel trends?
Philipp: There isn’t a single school of thought in this regard.
What can definitely be observed, however, is a strong sense
of place. South Tyrol has a landscape with a very distinct
identity, both culturally and geographically. As a result,
good architecture is almost always created in keeping with
the surroundings: with the topography, the climate and the
history of the place. This dialogue shapes many projects
02
AMAGAZINE
and creates a certain shared approach,
even if the formal modes of expression can
vary greatly.
In your view, is AMA Stay more of an
aparthotel, a social space, a community
hub or an architectural statement?
Thomas: The foundation is certainly that of
an aparthotel – but that only describes part
of what happens there. At the same time,
AMA Stay is a social hub – a place where
people come together, exchange ideas, perhaps
work together or simply spend time
with one another. Architecture cannot force
such encounters, but it can create spaces in
which they become possible.

DESIGN TO
EXPERIENCE
PIECES, MATERIALS AND DETAILS FROM
AMA STAY
At AMA Stay, design is not just a decorative element - it’s a mindset. Every
room has been designed by BERGUNDTAL with both the finer details and
overall concept in mind, then crafted by local carpenters and enhanced
using carefully selected pieces from international brands. The result is an
interior with an impact: minimalist, functional and warm. It’s no wonder so
many guests ask: Where is this lamp from? Who made this table? Can you
buy it? Here are the most frequently asked-about pieces, listed where
possible with their origin and manufacturer. Pieces, materials and details
from AMA Stay.
How important are local materials and
craftsmen for creating authenticity?
Thomas: They are vital to the authenticity
and quality of a project. Local materials
and traditional craftsmanship forge a link
between architecture and regional culture.
They help ensure that a building does not
appear interchangeable, but instead becomes
an integral part of its surroundings.
Can architecture foster a sense of identity
– even for a place like San Vigilio?
Philipp: Architecture can reveal and
reinforce identity, but it only truly works
when it is rooted in the everyday life of a
place. Buildings become part of a collective
memory when people use them and spend
time there – visitors and locals alike. It’s
through these interactions that relationships
develop and in turn a sense of identity
emerges.
Sustainability is often viewed from a
technical perspective. Where do you think
the cultural sustainability of a building
begins?
Philipp: Cultural sustainability begins when
a building is actively used and cherished
over the long term.
Thomas: Yes, exactly. Spaces must allow
for appropriation. They must be designed
in such a way that people enjoy using them,
even over many years. When a building
becomes part of the life of a place, a form of
sustainability naturally emerges.
Is there a particular part of AMA Stay
that you’re especially proud of today –
four years on?
Thomas: We still find the communal areas
on the ground floor particularly exciting. It
is there that the building really comes alive
as a social hub. People meet up, strike up
conversations, perhaps get some work
done, have a drink and often end up staying
longer than they had planned. This openness
was a central idea behind the project
– and it’s lovely to see that it actually works.
Is regionality an aesthetic concept or a
responsibility?
Philipp: First and foremost, a responsibility.
When you engage seriously with a place,
the aesthetics emerge naturally from that.
In this way, regionality is not merely a decorative
element, but rather a mindset.
Architettura: dialogo tra forme e
persone.
strutture sulle Dolomiti a immaginare
in modo concreto e strutturato un’ospitalità
che combinasse vacanza e lavoro. Worklove-balance,
workation, community – idee
per noi fondamentali che gli architetti di
BERGUNDTAL hanno saputo declinare in
forme chiare, ridotte e integrate nel territorio.
Oggi, quasi quattro anni dopo, stiamo osservando

Nachhaltigkeit
wird so nicht nur technisch, sondern kulturell
gedacht: als Fähigkeit eines Gebäudes,
langfristig genutzt, geschätzt und Teil des
lebendigen Ortsgeschehens zu werden.

DO WHAT YOU LOVE
MY STAY IN
THE DOLOMITES
SUMMER IN THE MOUNTAINS:
A BREATH OF FRESH AIR
Summer here in San Vigilio has a rhythm all of its own. It begins
early, as soon as the first light hits the rocks, when the air becomes
clear and you feel as if you have the day all to yourself.
Summer beckons you outdoors, encouraging you to get moving,
to embrace the tranquillity and whatever else comes your way.
It is your invitation to explore our homeland however you wish.
At AMA Stay, everything begins with a simple idea - we want to
create space. For downtime, for reflection, for physical activities
and for new encounters. Our hotel thrives not only on the
people who love being here, namely our guests, staff and locals
alike, but also on our deep connection to Val Badia. Against the
backdrop of the Dolomites amid a culture which is very much
alive, every day brings about something new. There is an endless
world to experience and explore – amongst rugged mountain
peaks, picturesque landscapes and rolling valleys.
WHAT YOUR DAY COULD LOOK LIKE:
06:00
Early start.
Experience the mountains at first light.
There are trails leading to the Fanes-Senes-
Braies Nature Park right on our doorstep
– expect vast plateaus, tranquil valleys and
striking rock formations.
Going vertical.
Our recommendation: the Piz da Peres via
ferrata above San Vigilio. Three sections each
with a different level of difficulty: Tor Blancia
(intermediate), Trei Donz (challenging), Picio
(easy). Open since 2022, the via ferrata has a
spectacular layout. Well secured throughout
with a moderate technical level for the most
part. Once at the top, the summit is just a few
minutes away offering sweeping panoramic
views stretching from the Dolomites to the
Zillertal Alps.
09:00
To Lago di Munt da Rina.
Quiet, clear and nestled among alpine meadows, this lake is
situated at an altitude of 2,180 m above Rina. Starting at the
sports field (approx. 1,500 m), follow the trail towards Munt da
Rina. From there, continue over the Col dal Lè towards the lake.
After about 2.5 hours, you reach your destination. The round trip
is approx. 5.5 km with an altitude difference of 670 m and the
total walking time is around 5 hours.
10:00
Hike to an alpine hut.
From Pederü, follow the old military road
uphill – a wide path that literally clings to the
rock face. Once at the top, follow the signpost
for Rifugio Senes. The view opens up revealing
mountain pines, alpine meadows and
wide open spaces. After around 2 hours, you
reach the Senes mountain hut at an altitude
of more than 2,100 m. The return route takes
you via Ütia Fodara Vedla. Around 10 km and
just under 600 m altitude difference.
Or sleep in for a change.
Enjoy a relaxing breakfast,
have a second coffee, check out
the view of the mountains and
make plans for the day.
Cycling through the Dolomites.
The Passo delle Erbe loop: 45 km, 1,400 m
altitude difference – a classic route for ambitious
cyclists, from San Vigilio via Longega and Rina
up to the Passo delle Erbe and back via San
Martino in Badia. A more relaxed alternative is
the route via Rina, Onies, San Lorenzo di Sebato,
Sares and back to San Vigilio: around 38 km and
1,150 m altitude difference.
04
AMAGAZINE
Mountain biking around Plan de Corones.
16 km, 570 m altitude difference – a
moderately difficult route that keeps you
on your toes. From San Vigilio via Marebbe
towards the Passo Furcia and back. Woodland,
panoramic views, old farmsteads. And
that constant flow state between physical
exertion and effortlessness. The section
through Marebbe with its old farmsteads is
a real highlight.
Art outdoors.
In Val dl’Ert near San Martino in Badia, the
forest has been transformed into a gallery.
Sculptures from past SMACH Biennales,
created by international and local artists,
can be found amongst the trees and nestled
in clearings, permanently integrated into
the landscape. Art and nature engaged in
dialogue.
15:30
Rooftop pool.
Slip into the soothing water,
relax your back and take in
the view of the Dolomites.
Go with the flow, sit in the
bubbling water and unwind.
In the evening, watch
in wonder as the rocks glow
red thanks to the magical
Enrosadira phenomenon.
Work for a few hours.
Open your laptop, focus and get stuff done.
Perfect workspaces, reliable Wi-Fi and no
distractions. Plus, you can head back outside
whenever you want. It’s precisely this
balance that makes all the difference.
Gym session.
Hit the gym after your outdoor activities
or do a targeted workout. Equipment for
strength and functional training and
mobility – you will find everything you
need. Large windows, plenty of light
and a view outdoors.
19:00
Eat well in the AMA Restaurant.
Head chef Marco cooks from memory,
recalling aromas, ingredients and
his grandmother, who passed on her
passion for cooking to him. The result
is a cuisine deeply rooted in South
Tyrol, which at the same time brings
a whole universe of flavours to the
plate. For maximum enjoyment, dine
on the terrace.
solo a te. Parti direttamente da qui e ti
avvii verso i paesaggi sconfinati del Parco
Naturale di Fanes-Senes-Braies. A piedi,
in mountain bike o bici da corsa, o magari
con imbrago e moschettoni. Su queste montagne
trovi tanto da esplorare. Anche inaspettate
forme d’arte – come in Val dl’Ert,

TALES & STORIES
LA LEGGENDA
DEL REGNO DI
FANES
L’EPOPEA DELL’ANTICO POPOLO
all’alleato, divenendo l’uno il figlio dell’altro.
sarebbe stato concesso all’altro.
leggende. Pannelli informativi e incantevoli
sculture ti guideranno attraverso i diversi capitoli
dell’epopea dei Fanes, in una passeggiata
pianeggiante adatta a tutti.
straniero.
06
Dolasila y Lujanta | dell’artista ladino Lois Rottonara ROTT, DOLOMITES LEGENDS
conquistando uno dopo l’altro i territori confinanti.
in avanti l’avrebbe sempre protetta. Incaricò i nani, abili
in tredici bambini. Erano sporchi, smagriti, e Dolasila
ferendola a morte.
AMAGAZINE
Nel frattempo, i Fanes avevano battuto in ritirata rifugiandosi
entro le mura della fortezza. Assediati e senza via
Fanes guidandoli attraverso i cunicoli scavati dalle marmotte

The Legend of the Kingdom of Fanes. In the Dolomites,
nestled between Val Badia and Ampezzo, there once
lived the people of Fanes. They are the central characters
of the grandest epic tale set in the Alps, an epic in which
the lives and destinies of legendary figures intertwine. The
muntagnoles – or marmots – bound to Fanes by an ancient
alliance, later to be shattered. Spina de Mul, a half-mule
half-skeleton sorcerer, master of deception and vengeance.
Dolasila, a warrior princess with magical armour and
infallible silver arrows. Ey de Net, a foreign prince, who
failed to save her. A king, blinded by power and greed,
who betrayed his people and was turned to stone (known
thereafter as the falz re – or false king – from which Passo
Falzarego derives its name). Lujanta, a daughter lost and
subsequently found, who saved her people but failed to
reclaim the kingdom.

STAY
INTERVIEW WITH BRIDGET MACNEILL
A RECIPE FOR GROWTH
SEASONED WITH PASSION AND ADVENTURE
At AMA Stay, every team member has a unique
story to tell and Bridget Macneill is no exception.
From Massachusetts to San Vigilio via Milan,
driven by a passion for cooking and a desire to
grow, her journey reflects what AMA Stay is all
about: opportunity, trust and personal development.
A member of staff since 2024, Bridget
works as a Demi Chef de Partie. With English,
Italian and Spanish already under her belt, she
shares what it means to live, work and thrive in
an international community in the heart of the
Dolomites.
a course on bread-making and last season he took all the
staff on a trip to a local food convention.
Some of the best moments include working during stressful
nights like New Year’s Eve. Because most of the staff are
easy-going, we laugh through the stress, help each other
out and work together to get things done more quickly.
This energy has enabled me to accomplish a lot more
professionally than I ever thought I was capable of.
How would you describe AMA Stay as an employer and
what makes it special for you?
Bridget: AMA Stay strives to satisfy both customers and
staff. It acknowledges the fact that guests sense the
difference when staff are happy and fulfilled in what they
are doing. I think we provide the best experiences when
we are genuinely happy.
ing mentally stimulated and it helps us maintain a sense of
creativity in the kitchen, since we are invested in the quality
of each dish.
What have you learnt about yourself during your time at
AMA Stay?
Bridget: I have learnt that working in the kitchen is a craft
requiring not only creativity and passion, but also dedication
and discipline. I am capable of learning and growing in any
position I am put in, but the biggest deciding factor in my
success is my own mentality and perspective. With a good
dose of optimism and elbow grease, challenges can be
overcome. Surrounded by a good team, you can accomplish
anything.
BRIDGET MACNEILL
DEMI CHEF DE PARTIE AT
AMA STAY
How did you first come
across AMA Stay and
what made you decide to
join the team?
Bridget: I first came across
AMA Stay whilst looking
at a work exchange site
for backpackers called
WorkAway. The position
caught my eye at a time
when I was working as an
English Teacher in Milan
but was keen to find a new
career opening, which
would allow me to pursue
my passion for cooking. In the US I worked in many bakeries,
but always had a fear of the kitchen. When I spoke to Marco
the Chef for the first time, he immediately reassured me,
saying that AMA Stay could be a place to learn and grow,
and that I didn’t need to know everything right from the
start. For him, the most important attributes were positive
attitude and energy.
What do you find most fulfilling about your role today?
Have there been any particularly memorable moments?
Bridget: For me, the most special and fulfilling part of AMA
Stay is the team we have developed in the kitchen as well
as the trust I have in my boss and Head Chef Marco. I came
to AMA having worked for a lot of employers who made me
feel as if I always had to negotiate to protect my best interests.
This is not the case at AMA. Marco not only prioritises
my well-being, but also ensures that I am satisfied with
my personal development. He brought me with him to do
AMA Stay brings people from many different cultures
together. How do you experience this internationality in
your daily work?
Bridget: I feel really lucky to be exposed to the internationality
of our team. Not only did it make me more comfortable
speaking Italian when I first arrived, as it is a second language
for most of us, but it also allowed me to start learning a third
language, namely Spanish! Everyone here is really kind and
open to sharing their culture – you haven’t had the full AMA
Stay experience if you haven’t shared a drink of mate!
What is it like living and working in San Vigilio in the Dolomites?
How does this environment influence your daily
life?
Bridget: The mountains play a big part. They offer respite
and the chance to learn something new or do something
active to help clear your mind. Here at AMA, I learnt how to
snowboard and ski for the first time in my life. I went on my
first long hikes with my friend and coworker Susana, and
thanks to her gained a lot of confidence in myself and in my
ability to do difficult things. Nothing brings coworkers closer
than learning to snowboard together and watching everyone
continually fall on their butts for a few weeks before
finally catching their groove and hitting the red runs!
AMA Stay talks a lot about work-love balance and personal
growth. How have you experienced this firsthand?
Bridget: I have experienced this in the kitchen with Chef
Marco, who is always willing to devote time to teaching us
new things. It would possibly be easier, if we always stayed
in the same position in the kitchen, but for our professional
benefit, he ensures we know how to rotate around different
stations. This means we can help each other more while be-

RECIPE
BALOTES
I CANEDERLI LADINI
In Val Badia i canederli li chiamiamo balotes,
palline. Marco De Benedictis, il nostro chef,
le propone con gli spinaci.
Assaggia l’originale all’AMA Restaurant -
e poi prova a rifarle a casa.
INGREDIENTI
per circa 18 balotes
1 kg di spinaci freschi
280 g circa di pane raffermo, tagliato a
cubetti piccoli
2 uova medie
1 albume
150 ml di latte intero
100 g di formaggio stagionato Alta Badia,
tagliato a cubetti molto piccoli
1 cipolla bianca piccola (60-70 g)
80 g di burro
30 g di erba cipollina fresca, tritata
Sale fino q.b.
Noce moscata q.b.
Acqua q.b. (solo se necessaria per regolare
la consistenza)
In più, per servire:
80 g di burro fuso
Erba cipollina fresca
Formaggio grattugiato
(Parmigiano Reggiano DOP)
PROCEDIMENTO
1. Sbollentare gli spinaci in acqua salata per
2 minuti. Raffreddarli immediatamente
in eccesso. Frullarli con un mixer fino a
ottenere una massa fine e omogenea.
2. Tritare finemente la cipolla. Rosolarla dolcemente
nel burro fino a renderla morbida
e traslucida, senza colorirla eccessivamente.
Lasciare raffreddare.
moscata. Unire quindi il burro con la cipolla,
ormai freddi, e amalgamare.
4. In un recipiente capiente inserire il pane
raffermo, l’erba cipollina, il formaggio Alta
Badia e mescolare distribuendo bene il
formaggio. Versare quindi il composto di
spinaci sopra il pane. Impastare delicatamente
con le mani fino a ottenere un
composto omogeneo. Se necessario,
aggiungere pochissima acqua: l’impasto
deve risultare compatto ma morbido,
modellabile senza rompersi. Lasciare
riposare 15 minuti per permettere al pane
di assorbire completamente i liquidi.
5. Formare delle sfere - le balotes - da circa
60 g ciascuna. Cuocerle in abbondante
acqua salata a leggero bollore per 8/10
minuti. Quando risulteranno compatte al
tatto, scolare con delicatezza.
6. Servire con burro fuso caldo, formaggio
grattugiato e una spolverata di erba
cipollina fresca.
Hai già sbirciato sul menù?

intrecciano creatività e territorio.
E qualche classico badiota.

NATURE AND CULTURAL MEMORY
FANES-SENES-BRAIES
NATURE PARK
MYTHS AND MILLIONS OF YEARS OF HISTORY
It is an unimposing landscape. No dramatic
scenery as such, yet all the more impressive for it.
The Fanes–Senes–Braies Nature Park lies between
Val Pusteria, Val Badia and Valle di Landro, like
a peaceful highland made up of vast mountain
pastures and water-rich plains, intermixed with
jagged ridges cutting a sharp silhouette against
the sky. Towering above it all at 3,146 metres is
the Croda Rossa d’Ampezzo, the highest peak in
the Braies Dolomites - first ascended in 1870
by a rope team led by Santo Siorpaes. An earlier
expedition led by Paul Grohmann reached a
subpeak in 1865, but not the main summit.
INFO
THE NATURE PARK
IN NUMBERS
Stay. Esplora il Parco partendo da qui.

What makes this natural landscape so special is not so
much its appearance, but rather its balance: open plateaus
such as Fanes and Senes, nestled within an ancient
mountain world and interspersed with springs, streams
and waterfalls. It’s a landscape that leaves room to breathe.
And a lasting impression. Because this is a place where
legend and geology meet. Around 250 million years ago, the
Megachirella wachtleri, one of the oldest known ancestors
of today’s scaled reptiles, lived in this area. And high up, at
an altitude of almost 2,800 metres, the remains of Ursus
ladinicus – a cave bear that lived here around 50,000 years
ago – were found in the Conturines Cave. An extraordinary
find, not least due to the extreme altitude of its habitat.
Much later, a massive rockslide led to the formation of Lake
Braies, regarded as one of the most famous natural sights
in the Dolomites today. And let’s not forget the Legend of
the Kingdom of Fanes – a world of queens, female warriors
and fallen kingdoms – which is firmly embedded in Ladin
culture and continues to shape the identity of the region to
this day. (see page 06)
For our guests, it all begins right on our doorstep in San
Vigilio di Marebbe. From the village into the open countryside,
from everyday life into a different rhythm of time. This
very continuity is what still defines the nature park today.
Established in 1980, it aims to preserve this interplay
between nature, history and cultural memory. It has been a
UNESCO site since 2009. Anyone exploring this place today
passes through several layers of time at once: across alpine
meadows that have been cultivated for centuries, past huts
whose origins date back in part to First World War military
structures and through a network of trails carved out by the
earliest alpine pioneers. And yet everything seems astonishingly
peaceful. Almost untouched.

ladinischen Kultur.
seit 2009 UNESCO-Welterbe.

L’avvicinamento inizia dal parcheggio di
Capanna Alpina (a pagamento), poco oltre
San Cassiano e Armentarola. Segui il sentiero
n° 11, lungo e a tratti ripido ma senza
Prosegui in salita
Lavarella (a destra).
Can you identify the conifers found in
Val Badia?
They aren’t all “pines”! Here are some clues
to help you:
1. Mid-altitude, fine-grained bark, the bark
beetle’s favourite food.
2. High-altitude, hardy and long-lived, wood
known for its relaxing properties.
3. On rocky edges, grows in bushes, grappa
made with cones and shoots.
4. Tall and slender, yellow in autumn, bare
in winter, vibrant green in spring, children
use the cones to pretend they’re smoking
a pipe.

Erkennst du die Nadelbäume im
Gadertal?
Nein, es sind nicht einfach alles „Kiefern“!
Hier ein paar Hinweise:
1. mittlere Höhenlage, feinkörnige Rinde,
Lieblingsbaum des Borkenkäfers;
2. in Hochlagen, widerstandsfähig und
langlebig, Holz bekannt für seine
beruhigende Wirkung;
3. an der Waldgrenze, nahe am Fels,
oft strauchartig, Zapfen und Triebe
werden für Schnaps verwendet;
4. mit schlankem Wuchs, im Herbst gelb,
im Winter kahl, im Frühling leuchtend
grün, Zapfen dienen Kindern als „Pfeife“.

MOUNTAIN HUTS
UNA VITA IN RIFUGIO.
IDENTITÀ, BELLEZZA,
RESPONSABILITÀ.
I RIFUGISTI DELL’ALPE DI FANES SI RACCONTANO.
TIPS
SOSTA IN RIFUGIO?
ECCO COSA
DOVRESTI ORDINARE.
storia!
Ücia de Fanes | Canederli in brodo bollente

The Fanes Plateau hut keepers: their story. Ücia de Fanes
and Ücia Lavarella are two historic mountain huts at the foot
of the Fanes Dolomites, the mountains in Dolasila’s magical
kingdom. The two Ladin families that run them have shared a
glimpse into life behind the scenes: the job of a hut keeper is
an intense one with no set hours and requires everything from
cooking to maintenance skills. They start their days before
dawn just like mountaineers and finish up late in the evening.
High-altitude weather and logistical struggles are a constant
challenge. Yet, it is also a way of life enriched through meeting
people from around the world as well as solitary moments
spent at one with the mountains. The bond between the hut
keepers and the Legend of the Kingdom of Fanes is strong –
almost ancestral in fact. Here, Ladin identity and territory along
with community and nature are deeply intertwined. Dolasila,
Lujanta and the marmots are not just mythical figures, but
a tangible presence. Today, the Fanes Plateau hut keepers
urge visitors to explore the mountains with respect, patience,
caution and proper equipment. After all, the mountains are not
a playground, but a fragile and precious ecosystem.
So, we ask you to take off your earphones, forget about Wi-Fi
and switch off your camera. Embrace your surroundings to gain
a better understanding of these places and their community.
Planning to stop off at one of the mountain huts in the Fanes
Dolomites? Here’s what to order:
- Ücia Lavarella, run by the Frenner family | GA.BEER, craft
beer brewed on the premises
- Ücia de Fanes, run by the Mutschlechner family | canederli
(dumpings), the hut’s signature dish and a symbol of Ladin
identity.

So

MY BUSINESS DAY
AT AMA STAY
WORKATION, MICE EVENTS AND
A TRUE SHIFT IN PERSPECTIVE IN
THE DOLOMITES.
At AMA Stay, a business day runs smoothly from
start to finish: the infrastructure is in place,
distances are short and the rooms work well.
Presentations, exchange and quiet time –
everything fits together seamlessly. Add to that
an environment that encourages focus and
sparks inspiration. For teams moving forward
together. For companies looking for more than
just traditional meeting rooms.
Team gatherings find structure here, ideas gain
momentum and discussions result in decisions
being made. A natural flow develops between
the conference rooms, coworking spaces,
restaurant, community table and terrace –
focused, productive and open to new ideas. Well
thought through indoors – limitless outdoors.
Workation, MICE events and the Dolomites help
to achieve a shift in perspective as well as true
balance, which is exactly what productivity
requires today.
WHAT YOUR BUSINESS DAY COULD LOOK LIKE:
08:00
BREAKFAST AND TEAM KICK-OFF.
Start the day together: a healthy breakfast, initial
chats over coffee on the terrace. Who’s taking on what
and where does the focus lie? The atmosphere evolves
naturally: relaxed, focused and collaborative.
09:00
SETUP & QUICK SYNC.
Laptop open, presentation ready. Big screens, reliable
Wi-Fi. Final checks before getting started.
09:30
STRATEGY SESSION.
The presentation is underway with high levels of
interest and participation. Teams split up and the
discussion continues in the next room. Afterwards,
everyone comes back together to decide on the
next steps.
10:30
COFFEE BREAK ON THE TERRACE.
Espresso and fresh air. Time for a chat, the chance to
get to know each other better, catch some sun and
boost your energy.
11:00
BREAKOUT & WORK SESSION IN COWORKING SPACE.
Small groups continue to focus on the work at hand:
checking figures, refining concepts, defining tasks. Time
to reflect or discuss – the two go hand in hand.
13:00
LUNCH IN THE AMA RESTAURANT.
Gathered around the table enjoying a delicious, light
lunch. A short break from work. Or perhaps you’d rather
keep the ideas flowing?
14:30
CHANGE OF PERSPECTIVE AND OUTDOOR TEAM
BUILDING.
Once outside, a new perspective comes courtesy of a
hike, an e-bike tour or a special team-building session
with Wilfried from KREAKTIV: collaborative outdoor
challenges and physical activities bring clarity and
strengthen the team.
18:00
PAUSE & RESET.
Back at AMA Stay: check out the pool and sauna or
pop back to your room. Step back and recharge your
batteries.
20:00
DINNER & EXCHANGE.
A meal together, the chance to elaborate on certain
topics and reflect on the day. What have we learnt?
How do we put what we’ve learnt and worked on into
practice? On summer evenings, outdoors on the terrace,
sometimes with live music.
ONE LAST DRINK.
At the bar or outside in the balmy evening air. A perfect
way to round off the evening before a new day of opportunities
unfolds.
At AMA Stay, we take business to
the next level. Combining focused
work, alpine scenery and genuine
hospitality, we create an environment
that brings teams together
and fosters new ideas.

TEAM-BUILDING SPECIAL
AGENDA ASIDE
COLLABORATION BEYOND ROLES, ROUTINES
AND MEETING ROOMS
Team building is often viewed as a soft skill.
Nevertheless, research shows that shared experiences
under real conditions change the way teams
think, make decisions and work together.
Dynamics become visible, roles shift and in turn
new forms of collaboration emerge, often having
a more lasting impact than traditional training.
WILFRIED STEGER
FOUNDER KREAKTIV
Yet team building is often
underestimated in companies
with its benefits deemed
too vague and its impact too
diffuse. At the same time,
organisations continue to
invest in strategies, processes
and tools, whilst overlooking
a crucial factor: how people
actually work together.
And this is precisely what has
a measurable impact. Studies
in organisational psychology
show that high-performing teams are not solely built on
technical expertise, but also on a shared understanding
of how they work together. This so-called shared mental
model determines how quickly decisions are made, how
conflicts are resolved and how resilient a team is in
complex situations.
The challenge is that this kind of understanding is difficult
to convey through theory alone. “Teams don’t learn how to
work together by talking about it,” says Wilfried Steger from
KREAKTIV, who has been developing and running team-building
activities in the Dolomites for our guests for several years.
“They learn how, by having to solve a problem together.”
This is exactly where experiential team building comes into
play. Rather than dictating what needs to be done, situations
are created in which teams must act for themselves without a
predetermined outcome. These are tasks that require planning,
communication and improvisation all at once.
Take this example: a group is given various materials and
tasked with building a functional structure together. There is
no clear right or wrong, just a final goal. ‘Some spend a long
time planning, while others get straight down to work,’ says
Wilfried. ‘Both approaches come with consequences – and
these enable you to see exactly how a team ticks.’
Situations like these bring to light something that often
remains hidden in day-to-day working life: real interaction
under pressure and uncertainty. Who takes responsibility?
Who listens? Who makes the decisions – and on what basis?
This effect comes to the fore in unfamiliar surroundings.
Essentially, the usual structure is absent and roles become
less defined. Research shows that behaviour changes
significantly within new contexts: hierarchies take a back seat,
communication becomes more direct and problem-solving
strategies more flexible.
“As soon as we leave the room, the dynamics change,” says
Wilfried. “Out here, there’s no traditional setting anymore.
Nobody is sitting at the head of the table.”
In addition, there is the influence of the surroundings themselves.
Exercise and nature have been shown to have a positive
effect on cognitive processes: stress is reduced, the focus
broadens and creative problem-solving increases.
“You often come up with completely different ideas outdoors,”
says Wilfried. “And conversations become more open too.”
A geocaching-style activity illustrates what this can look
like in practice : teams navigate their way through the
countryside using maps and coordinates to respond to a
simulated rescue situation, solving tasks, gathering materials
and making decisions under time pressure. In the
end, they might end up with a stretcher or
a makeshift structure – but what matters
most of all is the journey itself. “It’s never
just about the result,” says Wilfried. “It’s
about how a team gets there.”
The real value of such activities lies in skill
transfer. Teams that have navigated complex
situations together develop trust – not
as a concept, but as an experience. They
gain insight into how they perform under
pressure, where their strengths lie and
where friction arises.
All the more reason why team building is
becoming increasingly important in a
working world characterised by change and
uncertainty. It doesn’t create perfect teams –
but it does show how they function. And that
is precisely the first step towards change.
Many companies come to AMA Stay to
combine meetings, workshops or strategy
days with outdoor team-building activities
and time spent together. As a place for exchange, strategy
and development, AMA Stay serves as a starting point for
teams wishing to grow together – the real shift in perspective
however, takes place outdoors.
Together with KREAKTIV, we develop workshops that
can be flexibly tailored to teams: ranging from short,
spontaneous sessions to programmes lasting several
days and from small groups to large teams. Depending
on the company’s requirements, the programmes can be
sports-oriented, creative or strategic. Rafting, canyoning
and e-bike tours are just as much part of the mix as team
challenges or multi-day programmes including overnight
stays in mountain huts.
building esperienziale rende visibile come funziona realmente
professionale.
Insieme a
piccoli gruppi e grandi team. In sessioni singole o in programmi
IT
Teambuilding beginnt dort, wo Zusammenarbeit erleb
bar wird. Wenn Teams outdoor gemeinsam Herausforderungen
meistern, verändern sich Dynamiken, Rollen und
Entscheidungsprozesse oft nachhaltiger als durch klassische
Trainings.
gibt, besonders in komplexen Situationen. Erfahrungsbasiertes

Come sei arrivata da
AMA Stay?
Dopo tanti anni in un’agenzia
di viaggi a Bolzano,
sono tornata a San Vigilio
per lavorare prima nella
segreteria di una scuola di
sci e poi alla reception di un
hotel. Lì mi occupavo anche
di back office e marketing,
business.
contesto esclusivo e sale meeting moderne e perfettamente
attrezzate, ci occupiamo direttamente noi anche
delle esperienze di contorno. Cene in rifugio con ritorno
in motoslitta, escursioni e bike tour con guida certificata,
team building avventurosi. Tutto organizzato in dettaglio,
incontro tante persone interessanti, adoro riuscire a trovare
So cosa proporre, so
cosa è fattibile e cosa no. Insomma, so come trasformare
un semplice soggiorno aziendale in un’esperienza intensa,
arricchente e legata a questi luoghi.

RELAX
SELF-AWARENESS
THE ART OF RECOVERY
HOW YOUR HOLIDAY CAN RESULT IN
TRUE REGENERATION
Time spent in nature, mountain
activities, good food, long conversations
and a break from the
daily grind – holidays create space
for renewed energy. And yet, we
sometimes come back not feeling
as refreshed as we had hoped. This
isn’t usually due to the length of the
break, but rather the fact that our
internal state doesn’t automatically
change once we find ourselves in
new surroundings. True regeneration
occurs when our nervous system actually comes to rest.
Tanja Treis, an expert and trainer in mental training methods,
breathing and visualisation techniques and meditation, explains
how to achieve this shift. She supports people from the worlds
of business, sport and education in developing focus, clarity and
sustainable performance.
TANJA TREIS
FOUNDER OF DODEKA –
THE MINDFUL COLLECTIVE
Tanja, what actually happens in our body during deep recovery?
Our nervous system has two basic states: activation and regeneration.
Activation enables performance, concentration and movement. Regeneration
is the state in which the body can repair and process: muscles recover,
hormones can regulate themselves and the brain is able to sort through impressions
and experiences. Performance potential follows a basic principle:
growth occurs through the alternation of exertion and rest. The body does
not regenerate during activation, but rather when at rest. It is precisely this
alternation, or rather this balance, that many people find difficult to achieve,
even on holiday.
TIPS
MINI RESET MOMENTS TO AID TRUE
RECOVERY
Regeneration doesn’t just come with time,
but rather through particular moments
which allow the nervous system to enter
a state of rest. Small, deliberate breaks
throughout the day are often enough.
THE FIRST BREATH OF THE DAY
Even before the day begins: stop for a moment.
Feel the bed, the duvet and the air in
the room. Take three calm breaths through
your nose and notice how your body feels.
A VIEW INTO THE DISTANCE
A moment spent at one with the view: from
the balcony, from the pool or whilst out
walking. The visual expanse has a calming
effect on the nervous system and helps you
switch into relaxation mode. Let your gaze
wander as you take in everything around
you.
A QUIET WALK
Take a few minutes to consciously slow
down – perhaps whilst walking through the
hotel garden or along a forest path. Take in
the air, the light and the sounds, not forgetting
to be mindful of your breathing.
CALM NASAL BREATHING
For a few minutes, consciously breathe in
and out through your nose, gently lengthening
the exhalation. Your breathing becomes
calmer, oxygen utilisation improves
and the parasympathetic nervous system
is activated – in short, your body relaxes.
A sense of inner calm and renewed energy
often becomes apparent after just a short
while.
L’arte della rigenerazione. Distanza
dal quotidiano, movimento nella
natura, buon cibo e nuove ispirazioni: le
vacanze offrono i presupposti migliori
per fare il pieno di energia. Eppure è solo
quando anche il nostro sistema nervoso
si acquieta che avviene la vera rigenerazione.
Tanja Treis, istruttrice di mental
methods e di tecniche di respirazione,
spiega perché il tempo libero non sia
sufficiente per rigenerarsi: è fondamentale
alternare attività e riposo, ma anche
imparare a comprendere i segnali del proprio
corpo. Respiro consapevole, momenti
di silenzio, sguardo verso spazi aperti o
piccole pause nella natura possono aiutarci
a ritornare in modalità rigenerativa.
Già qualche semplice esercizio – come la
respirazione calma attraverso il naso, una
passeggiata lenta o un breve body scan
– aiutano il corpo a raccogliere nuova
energia e a sperimentare una rigenerazione
duratura.
IT
So, how can we slip into this regeneration mode more easily?
A key factor is our sense of awareness. Nowadays, we often try to measure
recovery using sleep scores, fitness data or heart rate variability. This
can be helpful, but it also has a downside. We start to have more faith in
the numbers than in our own body awareness. How often do we look at
a screen first thing in the morning instead of asking ourselves: How does
my body feel? Am I breathing calmly? Do I feel truly rested? Our body is
constantly sending us signals whether through our breathing, heartbeat,
muscle tension or level of tiredness. The ability to perceive these internal
signals is called interoception. It describes how well we can sense what
is happening in our body at any given moment. If we strive to cultivate a
deeper awareness, it becomes easier for our nervous system to switch
between activation and rest. Or to put it another way: regeneration begins
with awareness.
THE TRANSITION AFTER EXERCISE
After a walk or swim, take a moment to
sit and feel your breath and pulse calming
down. A quick scan can help you reconnect
with your body: your focus shifts gradually
from head to toe, acknowledging bodily
sensations without judgement.
“REGENERATION IS THE
STATE IN WHICH THE
BODY CAN REPAIR AND
PROCESS.”
Die Kunst der Erholung. Urlaub
schenkt Abstand vom Alltag, Bewegung
in der Natur, gutes Essen und neue
Eindrücke – beste Voraussetzungen, um
neue Energie zu tanken. Doch erst wenn
auch unser Nervensystem zur Ruhe
kommt, können wir uns wirklich erholen.
Tanja Treis, Trainerin für mentale
Methoden und Atemtechniken, erklärt,
warum Regeneration mehr braucht als
freie Zeit: Entscheidend ist der Wechsel
zwischen Aktivität und Ruhe sowie die
Fähigkeit, die eigenen Körpersignale
wahrzunehmen.
