Fred is an old man
living on his own
when one night
he spots burglars
breaking into the
shed in his garden.
Naturally he’s left
feeling a little insecure
by this turn of events,
so he calls 911.
Well the 911 operator
advises Fred that
there are no patrol
cars available in his
area to help him right
now. Frustrated, Fred
hung up. After a few
minutes he called
again.“I called you a
few minutes ago to
report burglars in my
garden shed. Well
you can cancel my
request for help now
because I’ve just shot
them all. I won’t be
needing you after all,”
says Fred.
Within minutes there
are three patrol cars
outside Fred’s house
with sirens wailing
and blue lights
flashing. The officers
saw the burglars
running off in the
distance.
One of the police
officers marches up
the drive and says to
Fred, “I thought you
said you’d shot them
all?”
To which Fred
responds, “And I
thought you said that
there were no patrol
cars available.”

Dear More Hammock Than Hiker,
Absolutely not. Listen, I’m 10 years old. I’ve been through
plenty of summers, and I’ve learned something important:
not every good summer memory has to involve sweating
up a mountain or waking up before sunrise on purpose.
Humans put a lot of pressure on June. Suddenly everyone
wants to pack every weekend with road trips, camping
adventures, lake days, bonfires, and enough activities to
make an old yellow lab need a nap just thinking about it.
Personally, I think summer can be just as successful if it
includes a lawn chair, a hot dog, and someone willing to
hand over a few potato chips when nobody’s looking.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I enjoy a nice walk, a swim, or
sniffing around a campground for dropped hamburgers as
much as the next dog. But some of my favorite summer
days involve absolutely nothing at all. Just shade, a
breeze, a full belly, and a solid afternoon nap.
So no, you’re not missing out. Summer isn’t a competition.
If you’re happy, relaxed, and maybe a little sun-kissed by
the end of the day, I’d say you’re doing June exactly right.
