Electrical Enclosure Company of the Month

Innovating for over a century

In this issue of Building and Facilities

News we feature Ritherdon &

Co as our Electrical Enclosure

Company of the Month

Ritherdon specialises in the manufacture,

design and production of cutting-edge electrical

enclosures.

Widely regarded as the UK’s premier stainless

steel electrical enclosure specialists, Ritherdon

designs and manufactures durable feeder pillars,

electrical enclosures and other innovative

solutions. Its products support essential

infrastructure worldwide in sectors including

highways, electricity distribution, construction, fire

protection and EV charging.

With a passion for innovation and a close working

relationship with customers, the company has

earned a reputation for high-quality products that

have changed the landscape of the industry.

Established in 1895, Ritherdon has a long and

storied history. It began as a sheet metal factory

in Bolton, Lancashire fuelled by founder Percy

Ritherdon’s expertise in chemistry. Percy’s passion

for chemistry also converged with his love of

magic and led to an interesting array of products

for the company.

Ritherdon focused on electroplating and

enamelling for the Edwardian bicycle boom, but

also on making tricks for magicians in a locked

workshop at North Bridge Mill.

After plating many millions of parts for the War

Office during the First World War, the company

began to focus on electrical enclosures during

World War Two. According to company archives, it

may have been during this conflict that Ritherdon

produced its first enclosures for the Navy’s

warships and started the company’s legacy of

innovation in this sector.

However, it was in the 1970s that Ritherdon really

honed its specialisation in electrical enclosures.

The company worked closely with electricity

boards and several of its current products sprang

from this association.

For example, it was in response to an enquiry

from one of the electricity boards, over 30 years

ago, that Ritherdon designed the first of its door

and frame units for meter box repair.

and quality it has become so well known for.

Having recently celebrated its 130th year,

Ritherdon remains a family company with fourth

generation Ben Ritherdon leading the business.

Now based in Darwen, Lancashire, the company

serves not only the UK but also international

clients with customers as far afield as Iceland and

Australia.

For the building and construction market, the

company offers a diverse array of products all

designed and manufactured in-house at its factory

in Lancashire.

From evolving regulations to maintenance

requirements, Ritherdon’s robust enclosure

solutions support critical electrical and fire

safety systems across social housing, private

developments and multi‐occupancy residential

buildings.

In this sector, Ritherdon’s standout product is

FireSeal. This fire rated access panel is designed

to cover existing meter boxes or other apertures

in compartment walls. Quick and easy to fit,

these units can be included in new builds as well

as retrofitted to older properties, and has been

a game-changing

contribution to the

buildings industry.

The company

developed and tested

the FireSeal range inhouse

to improve fire

compartmentalisation in

buildings, ensuring the

product maintained its

integrity as a barrier to

fire penetration for 30,

60 and 90 minutes, in

temperatures approaching 1,000°C.

For Managing Director Ben Ritherdon, FireSeal

represents Ritherdon’s emphasis on quality.

Ben said: “We take the quality of our products

really seriously.

“As a family business, we have a personal

commitment to ensure the products we produce

are of the highest quality and work better than

intended.

“A perfect example is our FireSeal door. Although

it may seem like a simple product, its function

in fire safety saves lives, so for us high-quality is

taken as standard.”

As well as the vented FireSeal, Ritherdon also

applies their extensive knowledge of electrical

enclosure to the building sector. From the basic

mini feeder pillars, to the RB Cabinet Range

and their largest enclosures, the RMC Cabinet,

Ritherdon’s electrical enclosures for building are

made for future proofing.

Kiosk is designed to securely house an external

permanent power supply for a property, either to

maximise space within the property boundary or

to relocate the supply to the curtilage.

It can typically house a three phase supply rated

up to 430A (or ~309kVA), but is also large enough

to future proof new connections by allowing space

for additional electrical equipment.

Designed for secure electrical connections, the

Kiosk features double doors with separate access

and individual backboards for both the electricity

provider and the end user, ensuring independent

entry.

The rapid growth of electric vehicle charging

infrastructure, especially in homes and

businesses, has also led Ritherdon to apply

its world-renowned flair for innovation to this

sector with a proven range of external electrical

enclosures and prewired feeder pillars, designed

and manufactured in the UK.

Ben told us about the company’s focus in this

sector.

“Over the last 15 years

we’ve been investing

in our technical

capabilities in-house,

but it’s in the last 12

months we’ve really

expanded our technical

abilities to include

electrical engineering

to meet the growing

demand for EV charging

and infrastructure.

“Now we’ve got electrical engineers in the

business who can do the most sophisticated

electrical design, as well as all the mechanical

elements we are famous for.”

From fast charging to rapid and ultra-rapid

charging environments, Ritherdon also builds on

decades of experience across power distribution

applications and its standard products to provide

a dependable foundation for EV charging

installations.

Today, Ritherdon maintains the spirit of innovation

For example, the PS300 Permanent Supply

Electrical Enclosure Company of the Month

Ritherdon’s passion for innovation has led to

continual development of its product range,

building the company a well-deserved reputation

for introducing industry-defining products to the

market.

The company recently released the world’s first

crash-tested, passively safe cabinet designed to

protect vehicle users while preventing the need

for expensive crash barriers.

Ritherdon’s Passively Safe Cabinet is made

from the same durable

steel as their traditional

roadside cabinets, but the

ingenious design means

the body of the cabinet is

not bolted to the ground.

Instead, it is attached

to a spacer base with

breakaway bolts which,

if hit with enough force, shear off, significantly

reducing the impact on the vehicle.

The company’s dedication to innovation extends

to their presence in the building sector as well.

They have also recently introduced a range of PVC

electrical enclosures. The electrically insulated

freestanding feeder pillar is fully recyclable,

making it a sustainable choice, which has had

a major impact on the

wider enclosure industry.

Ben said: “We

traditionally made these

stainless steel because

of the quality and the

strength of the material,

but as the sector

demanded more plastic,

we developed the more

environmentally friendly

PVC cabinet.

“We want our customers

to prosper and to do well

out of working with us.”

“We thought creatively and developed this

alternative to be recyclable, while retaining

the company’s signature material strength

properties.”

The sustainable cabinet has been so well-received,

Ritherdon have just began importing it to Iceland

for GP Orkulausnir, where it is particularly helpful

in the geothermal sites of the landscape and is

being trialled across the country in a variety of

different industries.

A commitment to

innovation and highquality

is driving

Ritherdon forward, but

alongside this dedication

is an outstanding

customer service offering.

Customer feedback plays

a critical role in Ritherdon’s design processes

with real world installation challenges, access

requirements and evolving regulations informing

how its products develop over time.

Additionally the company is dedicated to ensuring

pre- and post-sales support exceeds expectations.

“We want our customers to prosper and to do well

out of working with us,” said Ben.

“At our core, we are

manufacturers. We love

making things, so for

the business, this idea

of prosperity for our

customers becomes a

part of the prosperity we

want to achieve.”

As Ritherdon looks

forward, the company

plans to keep a steady

growth rate of 10% a year. This growth comes not

only in the form of innovative new products, but

also reinvesting in increased internal expertise

and a widening of services to cater to Ritherdon’s

growing consumer base.

Ritherdon’s decades of success is underpinned by

a core philosophy of integrity and a total focus on

quality that runs throughout the business.

As manufacturers, the company designs for

efficient, repeatable production, ensuring

consistency, quality and dependable lead times

but as a business, dedication to always providing

the best is integral.

This continual dedication to the ideals

of innovation and quality has helped the

manufacturer maintain its position at the forefront

of the industry and the deep-level of commitment

they provides their customers cements Ritherdon

as the UK’s premier electrical enclosure

specialists.

Fire Safety Services Award

Commitment, compliance, and care:

Award-winning fire safety solutions

In this issue of Building & Facilities

News, we are pleased to feature Fire

and Evacuation Services as the winner

of our Fire Safety Services Award

protecting residents while ensuring people feel

informed, reassured, and safe at all times.

Upon receiving the award, the F&ES Management

Team, said, “Receiving the Fire Safety Services

Award means a great deal to our entire team. It’s

a recognition of the hard work, dedication, and

professionalism that goes into what we do every

day. Fire safety is a responsibility we take very

seriously, so to be acknowledged in this way is

something we’re extremely proud of.

“More than anything, the award reflects the

commitment of our people, from those working

directly with clients on-site to the teams’

supporting operations behind the scenes.

Everyone plays a part in helping to keep people

and buildings safe. It’s also a reminder that the

standards within our industry continue to rise, and

that motivates us to keep improving, developing,

and delivering the best possible service to our

clients and communities.”

Fire and Evacuation Services has emerged as

a leading force within the UK fire safety sector,

building a reputation for excellence across

evacuation management and waking watch

provision while delivering reassurance to residents,

clients, and communities alike.

The origins of the business are rooted in a simple

but powerful belief: fire safety services could

be delivered better. Formed by directors with

extensive backgrounds in the Fire and Rescue

Service and previous experience within evacuation

management, the company was founded with

a shared ambition to improve professionalism,

accountability, and operational standards

throughout the industry.

That mission became

particularly significant in the

aftermath of the Grenfell

Tower tragedy in 2017. As

one of the first providers

commissioned following the

disaster, Fire and Evacuation

Services played a vital role

in supporting residents living

in non-compliant buildings

through professionally

managed Waking Watch

services and evacuation

support. The experience

proved defining for the

business and continues to

shape its commitment to

What began as a small but focused operation has

since evolved into a highly respected organisation

known for its expertise, integrity, and exceptionally

high standards. The company’s growth has been

driven not only by demand within residential

settings, but also by its ability to expand into

industrial sites, film and television productions, as

well as major events and festivals.

Today, Fire and Evacuation Services offers a

comprehensive portfolio of fire safety solutions.

Alongside Waking Watch and evacuation

management services, the company provides

fire risk assessments, fire door assessments, fire

marshal training, and on-site fire extinguisher

training. A key differentiator is its recruitment

strategy, actively sourcing personnel from local

authority and private sector fire services, including

industrial, airport, and military fire professionals.

This gives the company

access to an exceptional

depth of operational

knowledge and practical

expertise rarely matched

within the sector.

By combining frontline

experience with a culture built

around accountability and

continuous improvement,

Fire and Evacuation Services

continues to set a benchmark

for excellence within the fire

safety industry. We asked

the F&ES Management Team

what the biggest challenges are currently facing

the fire safety and evacuation sector, particularly

in the UK, and how does the company help clients

stay compliant with ever-changing fire safety

regulations and standards.

They answered, “One of the biggest challenges

facing the fire safety and evacuation sector in

the UK is keeping up with the pace of regulatory

change. Following the Grenfell Tower fire, there

has understandably been a much greater focus on

compliance, accountability,

and building safety standards.

While these changes are

positive and necessary, they

have created additional

pressure across the industry

to adapt quickly and

consistently. Another major

challenge is the increasing

demand for skilled and

qualified professionals. Fire

safety systems, legislation,

and evacuation planning

are becoming increasingly

complex, and there’s a real

need for experienced people

who can guide clients through

those requirements confidently and correctly.

“We’re also seeing changes in the types of

buildings and environments we work in. Modern

buildings, high-rise developments, and mixed-use

spaces often require more advanced fire safety

strategies and evacuation planning, particularly

where vulnerable occupants are involved. At the

same time, many organisations are balancing

tighter budgets and rising operational costs while

still trying to maintain high safety standards. The

challenge is helping clients remain compliant

without compromising on

safety or practicality.

“In terms of staying compliant,

we take a very proactive

approach when it comes to

helping clients. Fire safety

regulations and guidance are

constantly evolving, so it’s

important for clients to have

a partner they can rely on

for clear advice and ongoing

support. Our team keeps fully

up to date with changes in

legislation, industry standards,

and best practices, which

allows us to guide clients through what can

sometimes feel like a complicated process.

“We work closely with each client to understand

their building, their risks, and their responsibilities,

so the support we provide is always tailored

and practical. That support includes regular

inspections, fire risk assessments, maintenance,

system testing, and compliance reviews to make

sure everything remains up to standard. We also

make sure clients have clear documentation and

reporting, so they understand exactly where

they stand and what actions may be needed.

Just as importantly, we focus on building longterm

relationships. Compliance isn’t something

that should only be looked at once a year, it

requires ongoing attention, communication, and

preparation.”

Innovation remains a central focus for Fire and

Evacuation Services, particularly as legislation

and compliance requirements continue to evolve

across the fire safety sector. In response to recent

regulatory changes, the company has been driving

forward the implementation of Residential Personal

Emergency Evacuation Plans (RPEEPs) alongside

enhanced digital information systems designed to

improve emergency preparedness and response.

6

BFN is sponsored by Fire and Evacuation Services – see them on pages 6-7

Fire Safety Services Award

By integrating digital information with RPEEP

processes, Fire and Evacuation Services is helping

clients create safer, more informed environments

for residents and emergency responders alike.

The company also develops comprehensive

site-specific risk information (SSRI), Emergency

Response Plans (ERP), and Fire Emergency

Evacuation Plans (FEEP), ensuring that critical

building and occupancy information is readily

available when needed most.

Importantly, the business works closely with clients

to tailor documentation and emergency planning

procedures to the specific risks and operational

requirements of each site.

The F&ES Management

Team then shared an

example of a project where

their services significantly

improved safety/preventative

risk, “We currently provide a

range of services to several

different multinational clients

across the country. One

of these projects is a large

building containing 311 flats

with approximately 1,400

residents. Following their

periodic fire risk assessment,

and the subsequent invasive

investigation the building

was found to have several

issues which made it noncompliant,

with the potential

to be served notice by the local fire authority.

“We installed a large team on site 24 hours a day to

mitigate the risk, which improved the safety for the

residents and subsequently is allowing the client

time to carry out the necessary remedial works.”

Fire and Evacuation Services believes staff training

and evacuation planning are fundamental to

effective fire safety management, recognising

that even the most advanced fire safety systems

are only effective if people understand how to

respond during an emergency. A well-trained team,

combined with clear evacuation procedures, can

play a critical role in protecting lives and ensuring

an organised response.

To achieve this, the company works closely with

clients to deliver practical, site-specific training

tailored to each environment. This includes

fire awareness training, fire warden instruction,

evacuation procedures, and regular fire drills

designed to build confidence and clarity among

staff members.

The business also

emphasises the importance

of keeping evacuation

plans current, compliant,

and regularly reviewed. As

buildings, personnel, and

regulations evolve, Fire

and Evacuation Services

regularly reviews and

updates procedures to

ensure they remain effective,

keeping in line with its wider

goal to help organisations

embed a strong culture of

fire safety into everyday

operations.

Looking ahead, we asked

the F&ES Management

Team how they see the

fire safety industry evolving over the next 5-10

years, “The fire safety industry is continuing to

evolve at a rapid pace, particularly in response

to changes in legislation, technology, and public

expectations around building safety. Over the next

few years, we think we’ll continue to see a stronger

focus on accountability, competency, and higher

safety standards across the industry. Clients are

becoming more aware of their responsibilities, and

there’s a growing expectation for clear evidence of

compliance and ongoing risk management.

“Technology will also play a major role. Intelligent

fire detection systems, remote monitoring,

digital compliance records, and more integrated

evacuation solutions are already becoming

increasingly common. These technologies will

help improve response times, simplify compliance

management, and ultimately create safer

environments.

“I also believe there will be a greater emphasis

on personalised evacuation planning, particularly

in high-rise buildings and environments with

vulnerable occupants. The industry is moving

towards a more proactive and preventative

approach overall, rather than simply reacting to

issues once they arise.”

In closing, the F&ES Management Team gave

one key piece of advice that they would give to

building owners or facilities managers looking

to improve fire safety, “To view fire safety as an

ongoing responsibility rather than a box-ticking

exercise. The most effective fire safety strategies

are the ones that are regularly reviewed, properly

maintained, and genuinely understood by the

people within the building. It’s important not to

wait until there’s a problem or a compliance issue

before taking action. Regular risk assessments,

staff training, system maintenance, and evacuation

planning all play a vital role in keeping people

safe and ensuring buildings remain compliant.

We would also encourage building owners

and facilities managers to work closely with

experienced fire safety professionals who can

provide practical guidance and support tailored to

their specific environment.

“Ultimately, good fire safety is about preparation,

communication, and consistency – and investing in

those areas can make a significant difference when

it matters most.”

Health & Safety

You can’t improve what you don’t measure:

The role of environmental monitoring

and data logging in Net Zero buildings

For years, building sustainability has

largely been driven by design intent. New

technologies, improved insulation, renewable

energy systems and more efficient HVAC

equipment have all played an important role

in reducing carbon emissions across the built

environment.

However, a significant shift is now taking

place.

The recent introduction of the UK Net Zero

Carbon Buildings Standard Performance

Evaluations signals a move away from simply

assessing what a building was designed

to achieve and towards measuring how it

actually performs in operation. Buildings

that are not yet able to achieve full Net

Zero Carbon

Alignment can now

undergo a verified

Performance

Evaluation,

providing a

transparent

assessment of

their performance

against the

Standard’s

requirements and

identifying areas for improvement.

In many ways, these Performance

Evaluations represent a ‘building MOT’ for

the built environment. Rather than relying on

assumptions or theoretical calculations, they

focus on measured performance and verified

outcomes. The aim is not only to establish

whether a building meets the required

standards, but to understand how close it

is to achieving them and what actions are

required to progress further.

This shift has significant implications for

building owners, facilities managers and

estates teams.

Historically, energy efficiency projects have

often been justified using projected savings

and estimated performance improvements.

Yet many organisations discover that

once a building is occupied, real-world

performance can differ substantially from

expectations. Occupancy patterns change,

equipment usage varies, ventilation systems

are adjusted, and operational requirements

evolve over time.

As a result, the industry’s focus is

increasingly moving from design

performance to actual performance.

The challenge is that accurate performance

evaluation depends entirely on reliable data.

Gathering this information requires more

than periodic inspections or manual readings.

Data loggers play a critical role in collecting

accurate, continuous data that allows building

owners and facilities managers to understand

how buildings perform throughout changing

occupancy patterns, seasonal conditions and

operational cycles.

The UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard

repeatedly emphasises the importance of

measurement,

verification and

data collection.

The more buildings

that undergo

the process

of gathering

and assessing

operational data,

the stronger the

industry’s collective

understanding

becomes and the greater the opportunity to

drive meaningful carbon reduction.

For many organisations, this represents both

an opportunity and a challenge.

While sustainability targets, ESG reporting

requirements and regulatory expectations

continue to grow, many buildings still lack

the detailed environmental and energy data

needed to demonstrate progress. High-level

utility bills and building management systems

can provide useful information, but they often

fail to reveal where inefficiencies exist or how

individual systems are contributing to overall

energy consumption.

upgrades based on assumptions, they can

identify specific areas of concern, establish

accurate baselines and prioritise investment

where it will deliver the greatest benefit.

This approach is particularly valuable before

major retrofit projects are undertaken.

Pre-retrofit monitoring allows building

owners to understand existing conditions,

identify sources of energy loss and evaluate

the effectiveness of heating, cooling and

ventilation systems. Following improvements,

the same monitoring data sources can be

used to verify outcomes and demonstrate

measurable progress.

Environmental monitoring also supports the

wider goals of Performance Evaluations by

providing the evidence needed to validate

sustainability claims and support transparent

reporting. As ESG frameworks and Net Zero

initiatives continue to mature, organisations will

increasingly be expected to prove performance

rather than simply declare intentions.

For over 40 years, Tinytag

by Gemini Data Loggers has

supported organisations

across the public and

private sectors with robust,

reliable environmental

monitoring solutions. From temperature and

humidity monitoring through to CO 2 and

energy logging, Tinytag systems provide

the data needed to understand building

performance, support retrofit strategies

and contribute to ongoing compliance and

reporting requirements.

The introduction of Performance Evaluations

marks an important milestone in the industry’s

journey towards Net Zero. More importantly,

it reinforces a principle that facilities

professionals have long understood: You

cannot improve what you do not measure.

As the focus shifts from design intent to

verified performance, organisations that

invest in accurate measurement today will

be best positioned to demonstrate progress

tomorrow.

This is where environmental monitoring and

data loggers play a critical role.

By measuring temperature, relative humidity,

CO 2 and energy consumption over time,

building operators can gain a far clearer

understanding of how their facilities are

performing. Rather than implementing broad

Growing fire safety

organisation Fire Aware

is highlighting the need

for further training and

education across the

hospitality industry

at all levels to help

improve prevention

and improve fire

safety across the built

environment.

The fire safety sector is currently facing

significant shortages of qualified staff, made

worse by the need for specialist skills to manage

the new legislation introduced under the

Building Safety Act.

The move to heighten awareness of the

importance of fire safety training from Fire

Aware comes after the National Fire Chiefs

Hochiki Middle East

showcased its latest life

safety innovations at

Intersec Dubai this January,

with a focus on helping

consultants, contractors

and facilities teams deliver

robust, compliant fire

strategies for complex

estates across the region.

At the Hochiki stand,

visitors could see Ekho, the

company’s hybrid wireless fire detection system,

which has been shortlisted for the Tomorrow’s

Facilities Management Fire Category Award.

Winners were announced after March, but the

nomination already reflects Ekho’s growing impact

for facilities and estates teams managing complex

portfolios, from hospitals and universities to hotels,

heritage sites and mixed-use developments. By

cutting cabling, reducing intrusive works and

allowing greater flexibility in device placement,

Ekho helps teams modernise systems faster, keep

spaces operational and respond to tightening fire

safety standards.

Ekho combines hard-wired

loops with a wireless mesh

to minimise cabling, speed

up installation and make

upgrades possible in heritage

sites, retrofits and busy

commercial environments.

Alongside Ekho, Hochiki also

demonstrated:

s Latitude fire control panels

for large, networked and

multi-use sites

s Marine and specialist ranges designed for harsh

and high-risk environments

s EN and UL-approved detection, engineered for

of care. This could be anyone from property

sector, to facility managers and care home staff.

We need to go beyond legislation for safety

Growing fire safety

industry organisation Fire

Aware aims to change

the culture of the built

environment sector by

introducing a moral code

of conduct via a series

of charters designed to

influence how member

companies behave in

upholding their duty of

care.

The expanding industry body is leading the way

by focusing on the moral responsibility of all those

working in the fire safety supply chain including

designers, developers, asset owners, managers

and other stakeholders.

Gavin Skelly, CEO of

Fire Aware, said, “We

understand the need for

competence. But when

dealing with an industry

that the public relies on

to keep them safe, there

has to be more. There

has to be a commitment

to safety. As with a

number of other sectors

and professions, the fire

sector has a wide array

of duty holders, but they all share one common

requirement, which is to understand they are there

primarily to keep the public safe.

“We are appealing to the fire safety industry and

When buildings

can’t do what

they are

meant to do

The image that’s stayed with me this week isn’t

smoke pouring from a burning warehouse or

the skeletal remains of a logistics hub after a

major fire. Instead, it’s a photograph of a brandnew,

multi-storey industrial building that looks

at first glance to be the kind of flexible, highvalue

workspace our planning system actively

promotes. Offering tall ceilings, roller shutters

and vehicle access to the upper levels, this

flagship scheme in Barking has been described

as a ‘pioneer project’ but two years on, most of

it is empty.

The reason isn’t market collapse or lack of

demand. It’s a fire strategy. The development

in question has been designed as a multistorey

industrial and warehousing scheme,

part of a drive to maximise land use to free up

other areas for housing. On paper, it achieved

remarkable land efficiency. The units were large,

airy and perhaps tall enough to accommodate

mezzanines. The kind of space you would

reasonably expect to store goods, materials and

products at scale for a local logistics hub.

However, despite those apparent credentials,

the completed building has struggled to attract

occupiers. Only a small fraction of the available

space has been let. The issue, it transpired, is

that while the building resembles a collection of

small warehouse units, it cannot operate as one

in any meaningful sense.

think about their moral duty from the outset of any

project. We know from the feedback we receive

from our members that the industry is keen to

make this work. We believe in going above and

beyond legislation and minimum standards and

Fire Aware embraces safety through a series of

charters according to the type of business of

its members. These include main contractors,

property developers, building management,

designers, local councils, specialist contractors and

sub-contractors. It also recognises those outside of

the fire sector, who, while holding a duty of care are

not specifically part of the fire sector.

Facilities & Estates Management

More human-centred

and ethical workplace

technology

Businesses risk creating workplace

environments that feel increasingly

fragmented and impersonal unless

technology is deployed in a way

that works seamlessly across all

generations of employees, according

to Peter Moore, CEO of scale-up

software house, Lolly.

As organisations rapidly adopt AI,

automation and connected workplace

technologies, Moore believes the

focus must shift beyond simply

introducing new digital tools and

towards creating frictionless, humancentred

workplace experiences that

genuinely support how people work.

He also believes organisations

must think more carefully about

how AI is introduced operationally,

According to a recent survey,

improving compliance and safety

continues to be the number one

priority for facilities management

professionals. However, 14% of

respondents expressed uncertainty

about meeting building maintenance

compliance standards, while

only 23% plan to increase their

investment in compliance and safety

measures.

SFG20, the industry

standard for building

maintenance, surveyed

190 professionals from

various roles across

the built environment,

construction and

real estate to assess

challenges and priorities

regarding facility

management. The survey

reveals that while the industry faces

significant pressure, professionals

are focused on innovation and

improvement, with clear priorities

and strategies for 2025.

Compliance & safety as top priority

The survey reveals that improving

compliance and safety remains the

top priority for facilities management

professionals. A significant 77% of

respondents reported compliance

ethically and commercially, ensuring

technology enhances workplace

experiences rather than creating

unnecessary complexity or

disconnection. According to Moore,

the future workplace will require

businesses to balance intelligent

automation with empathy, flexibility

and meaningful human interaction.

Moore will explore these themes

further while chairing the panel

discussion, ‘AI, Work and the

Workplace: Who Wins in the Age

of Intelligent Organisations?’ at an

upcoming workplace technology

event hosted at Meta HQ. He will be

joined on the panel by experts from

META, FORA, BCG and HSBC. The

event will bring together leaders

across workplace, technology and

hospitality to examine how AI, digital

platforms, connected systems and

advanced workplace technologies

are reshaping the future of work.

Combining strategy, innovation

and real-world insight, the event

will showcase how technology can

create more intelligent, sustainable

and human-centric workplace

environments.

Improving compliance

and safety

to be at least a moderate challenge,

reflecting the ongoing issue of

meeting complex regulatory

requirements.

Budget constraints and cost

reduction

Budget constraints are currently the

biggest challenge in the industry, as

reported by 75% of respondents. At

the same time, reducing operational

costs is the second biggest priority

for FM professionals.

Rising energy costs,

inflation, and supply chain

disruptions all make it

increasingly difficult to

deliver quality and costefficient

services within

tight budgets.

As organisations strive

to meet compliance

demands and implement essential

safety measures, 40% report a

budget decrease over the past

year, with 13% citing a significant

reduction. 69% of facilities

management professionals have

the same or less budget than the

previous year.

Compliance risk across

multiple locations

If you operate across multiple

locations, Facilities Management

is not operational admin. It is

risk management. Yet in many

organisations, FM is still co-ordinated

through spreadsheets, inboxes and

shared folders. It works, until scale

exposes the cracks. Across Retail

estates, Care Homes, Leisure venues,

Schools or Logistics sites, the

complexity multiplies quickly:

s Different contractors per site

s Separate compliance documents

s Inconsistent maintenance

standards

s Limited visibility at leadership

level

When job tracking is manual and

reporting takes hours to compile,

leadership visibility becomes

delayed. And delayed visibility

increases exposure. Missed

compliance certificates. Untracked

recurring faults. Escalating reactive

spend. Inconsistent site standards.

A modern CAFM system changes

GRAHAM appointed

to deliver new

FM contract for

Solihull Council

GRAHAM has been awarded a new

strategic partnership contract by

Solihull Council for the delivery of

hard facilities management (FM)

services under the long-established

Property Services and Maintenance

Partnership.

The appointment follows a

competitive procurement process

and extends the relationship

between GRAHAM and Solihull

Council, which has been in place

since 2013. The new contract

builds on the previous Building

Partnership agreement and includes

reactive maintenance (RM),

planned preventative maintenance

(PPM), minor works up to £25,000,

and project works exceeding

£25,000, with no upper limit per

project and the introduction of

an expanded scope of services

including mechanical and electrical

maintenance.

The contract is structured as a five

year agreement with the option to

the structure completely. Mainteno

centralises every task, asset,

document and contractor interaction

into one live environment across

multiple locations. This means:

s Real time oversight of

maintenance activity

s Centralised compliance

documentation with clear audit

trails

s Measurable contractor

performance

s Structured workflows instead of

email threads

s Leadership dashboards without

manual reporting

Facilities Management becomes

transparent, measurable & controlled.

The strategic question is simple: If

you were asked tomorrow for a full

compliance and maintenance status

report across all your locations, how

quickly could you provide it? If that

question makes you pause, it may be

time to review your systems.

Facilities & Estates Management

AI-native M&A advisory firm TradeExit.

co.uk partners with Fix Radio to help

trade business owners automate and

successfully sell their companies

TradeExit.co.uk pairs each owner with a

bespoke AI Deal Concierge – trained on

their company, sub-sector and goals – to

prepare, position and sell their business to a

curated network of pre-qualified UK and US

acquirers.

Fix Radio, the UK’s national station for

tradespeople (742,000 weekly listeners), has

partnered with TradeExit.co.uk – an AI-native

M&A advisory powered by DealFlowAgent –

to give trade and building service owners a

specialist route to a successful exit.

TradeExit focuses exclusively on plumbing,

HVAC, electrical, fire safety, security

systems, pest control, roofing and facilities

– sub-sectors long underserved by generalist

business brokers. Founder Joe Lewin’s team

works alongside a curated network of active

UK and US acquirers who have already

signalled exactly what they will pay.

A bespoke AI Deal Concierge, trained on

each client

What makes TradeExit different is its

proprietary AI Deal Concierge. At the start

of every engagement, the agent is trained

on the client’s company – its financials,

contracts, operations, team structure, subsector

dynamics and the founder’s personal

goals for life after the sale.

From that point on, the Concierge works

around the clock alongside the human M&A

team: drafting positioning memos, modelling

valuation scenarios, pre-qualifying inbound

buyers against the owner’s red lines, and

remembering every conversation with every

acquirer so nothing is lost between calls.

The result is a process that feels personal but

operates at institutional speed – owners only

meet acquirers who fit their numbers, their

timeline and their values, which translates

into higher offers, more cash up front, less

value tied to earn-outs, and significantly

more negotiation strength.

Why now? Blue collar is the new blue chip

Thousands of baby boomer owners

across these sub-sectors are approaching

retirement, yet most lack the specialist

M&A support to secure a fair valuation and

protect the legacy they’ve spent decades

building.

“Blue collar is the new blue chip. AI is eating

white-collar and software work, but home

owners and commercial property operators

will always need trusted companies to fix

their heating at midnight or keep a building

fire compliant. These are mission-critical,

future-proof businesses – and the owners

who built them deserve the same quality of

exit advisory that large corporations take for

granted.”

– Joe Lewin, Founder & CEO, TradeExit.co.uk

The danger of delaying

Many owners are already

being approached by

potential buyers but

rarely have a clear view

of who those buyers are,

what they typically pay, or

how they treat the teams

they acquire. Specialist

guidance – backed by the

Concierge’s memory of

every prior conversation with each acquirer

– gives owners the context to compare offers

properly and choose the buyer who's the

best long-term fit.

“Most owners we speak to have spent

twenty, thirty or even fifty-plus years building

something exceptional,” Lewin explained.

“When the groundwork is in place early,

owners have a real luxury of choice. They

can move when the timing is right for them,

on terms they’re proud of, and sell to a buyer

that takes care of their team and legacy.”

Building density across every sub-sector

Alongside the Fix Radio partnership,

TradeExit is running a multi-channel push

into specialist trade publications and industry

events. The team is exhibiting at the Fire

Safety, Security and Facility Management

conferences (28-30 April), with a full-page

spread in the digital edition of the trade

magazine (reaching 400,000-600,000 readers)

and a half-page spread in the printed

magazine distributed across the shows.

The objective is simple: build the densest

specialist relationship network in the market

– by sub-sector, by geography, by deal size.

The denser the network, the more buyers

compete for each owner’s company, and the

higher the probability of a successful exit on

the seller’s terms.

Backed by top-tier investors

The launch of TradeExit.co.uk follows

DealFlowAgent’s $750,000 funding round

led by Long Journey Ventures, a fund

renowned for backing some of the world’s

most transformative companies – including

Uber ($5m seed-stage entry to $89bn IPO

valuation), SpaceX, and Loom.

“We’re thrilled to partner with TradeExit

to bring this to our

listeners. Our audience

are hardworking

professionals who

have spent decades

building their businesses.

Providing them with

a trusted, specialist

pathway to a successful

exit aligns perfectly

with our commitment

to supporting the trades

community.”

– Louis Timpany, Founder & CEO, Fix Radio

Rob O’Connell, COO at Fix Radio, added,

“Trade business owners are some of the

most resilient and skilled operators in the UK,

yet they’re often underserved when it comes

to exit planning. Partnering with TradeExit

means our listeners get specialist support

that genuinely protects the value they’ve built

– a practical, no-nonsense route to a better

outcome when the time comes to sell.”

Connect Vending:

Inspiring the workplace

In this issue of Building and Facilities

News, we have featured Connect

Vending as our Food & Drink

Vending Company of the Month

Food & Drink Vending Company of the Month

Highly specialised in

the food and beverage

industry, Connect

Vending delivers a

fully managed service

across a wide range

of products, including

vending, water, fresh

food, and commercial

coffee machines to

businesses across the

country.

Connect Vending

was established by founder Stuart Coutts, a

professional with a love of sales and good coffee,

back in 1996. Three decades later, the business has

evolved into one of the UK’s leading independent

vending operators, boasting multiple awards for

its customer service, innovation, and dedication to

the industry.

Despite living in London, Stuart chose the quiet

village of Abingdon in Oxfordshire to establish his

growing business, which now occupies a total of

four warehouses. While most businesses choose

to operate out of the capital, Stuart’s shrewd

decision to place his business in close proximity

to the M40 and M4 has enabled the business to

operate across the home counties with ease and

efficiency.

In fact, this exact route system is one of the

reasons that Connect Vending are able to uphold

their unparalleled service response times. Their

average time to breakdown calls is particularly

impressive, with 90% of breakdown calls visited

within four working hours. A leading standard for

any business, regardless of industry.

“We believe in a philosophy of being the best at

what we do,” says Elyas Coutts, CEO at Connect

and son of founder Stuart Coutts. “Starting from

good and ending up great, we are continuously

improving ourselves and all of our departments,”

he explains. “It’s that attitude and mindset that

sets our business apart from others and has

enabled such consistent

growth.”

Part of this strategy is

staying innovative and

ahead of the everevolving

workplace. In

2016, Connect Vending

introduced their first

Micro Market to their

portfolio, with ambitions

to bring antiquated

vending perceptions

into the 21st century.

Little did they know, the Covid-19 pandemic would

trigger an era of flexi-hours and hybrid working,

making a 24-hour food and refreshment solution

not just a workplace commodity, but an essential

service for employees.

The Micro Market is, at its core, an amalgamation

of all the services that Connect

Vending have to offer, typically

including a filtered water tap,

ambient snacks, fresh food

options, chilled drinks and

premium coffee. Connect

Vending understands that no

two workplaces are the same,

which is why each Micro Market

they create is carefully tailored

to each business’ individual

needs. This holistic approach

provides employees with the

choice, quality and convenience

that they have come to expect,

without breaking the bank for

employers.

“Commercially, it’s great value

when compared to traditional

catering options,” says Elyas. “It

removes the need for catering

staff and lowers the cost of running a kitchen,

while providing more food options to staff.”

10 years on from the first Micro Market, Connect

Vending supplies over 50 sites with fresh food

solutions. With each expansion, Connect Vending’s

operations only become more efficient. In 2025,

after a successful trial, Connect Vending added

frozen food vans to their fleet, enabling them to

add frozen ready meals to their Micro Market

offering to over 30% of their sites. This addition

gives employees access to hot meals at any time

of the day, ideal for those working late shifts or

flexible hours.

This strategy is essential to the success of

Connect. Fuelled by its own sales, the company

has never borrowed, and that entrepreneurial

spirit runs through the business as a core ideal.

For Elyas, this philosophy underpins the entire

business.

“We want to continue to develop with the same

approach as we always have.” He says, “It has

been a winning recipe that has not only allowed us

to grow safely and securely but ensure continuity

in what we do. As we have grown, we have

always considered our customers, as well as our

employees, and what that growth will mean for

them.”

Connect Vending is now one of the largest

independent operators in the country. They

have recently celebrated 30 years of service, a

milestone that less than 5% of all independent

businesses reach in the UK. The company has

consistently achieved double-digit growth every

year since 2020, expanding from a £4.5 million

business in 2020 to over £12 million in 2026.

Connect Vending maintains the spirit of continuous

improvement through their latest developments.

The company recently acquired a new warehouse

to increase its capabilities

across the business and

improve customer resupply.

Additionally, the company has

expanded its route capacity,

going from 25 to 35 routes in

the past year alone.

While Connect Vending’s

diverse range of products

carries a variety of benefits for

businesses across the country,

what truly sets the company

apart is their application of

expertise, business savvy,

and desire to always be the

best that they can be. Their

steadfast dedication to adapting

to the evolving workplace has

solidified Connect Vending’s

position at the forefront of the

food and beverage sector, and

we are looking forward to seeing what the future

has in store for them.

New Showerkap greentech

Sandman Hotel Group UK &

Ireland is boosting its sustainability

commitment, with the introduction

of the first smart water

management technology featuring

behavioural science – significantly

cutting water, energy and CO 2

emissions.

Showerkap’s system and sensors

have been installed in 20 bedrooms

as part of a ground-breaking trial

at the four-star Sandman Signature

London Gatwick Hotel in Crawley,

which attracts guests from Gatwick,

the UK’s second busiest airport,

as well as visitors to London and

Sussex.

The pioneering UK startup, based in Warnham,

near Horsham, has designed a new platform that

enables organisations to monitor and manage

water remotely, while nudging users to make

more eco-friendly decisions. The solution will also

support the operational team with real-time reports

– analysing and improving water use and efficiency

and highlighting any potential

safety risks and waste.

The innovation features small

smartboxes in every room,

which upload data from the

sensors to a centralised cloud

system, to remotely monitor

and manage water temperature

and safety. Working closely

with hotel staff, the Showerkap

team will help raise guest

awareness about water scarcity

and the importance of shorter

showers to help conserve

water.

In future projects, guests will

have the option to connect directly to the smart

devices, with the ability to use the patented, fade

technology, which gradually reduces the water

temperature at the end of a shower – creating a

‘nudge’ and behavioural cue to promote shorter

showers and conserve water.

Building & Construction

Why ‘Zero’ is a plus

for West Fraser’s

SterlingOSB

The UK government classified

formaldehyde as a carcinogen in

2016, prompting industry to observe

restrictions on its use, and West

Fraser is one company that has gone

above and beyond to reduce the

chemical compound’s impact on

the built environment and building

occupants, who

cannot normally

know it is present.

Unfortunately,

the amount of

formaldehyde

present increases

during the

processing of wood

into wood-based

panels – unless, that

is, they are sourced

from West Fraser, as

a specialist which

has developed a

methodology which

results in there being no added

formaldehyde introduced during the

manufacturing process. And it is this

fact which enables the company to

claim that it produces “the only UKmanufactured

OSB With Zero-Added

Formaldehyde.”

Castle Gates &

Automation

Hence, we see panel products with

appellatives such as SterlingOSB

Zero, SterlingOSB Zero OSB3,

SterlingOSB Zero Tongue & Groove,

and SterlingOSB Zero PrimedPlus

being utilised across construction,

including by housebuilding,

commercial development and by

offsite specialists as

well as fabricators

generally. So, it

makes sense when

one sees all the

everyday fixtures

and fittings within

the buildings

where we live and

work, containing

elevated amounts

of formaldehyde,

to take the

opportunity to

minimise its

presence wherever

possible. And

an opportunity to do this is by

specifying panels with the lowest of

emissions.

Water Management

Aqua Gratis: A scalable solution for water

efficiency in England’s water-stressed future

As pressure on England’s water resources

continues to increase, the need for scalable, costeffective

and low carbon demand management

solutions has never been more urgent. With

population growth, climate variability, and

tightening environmental regulation all impacting

supply, the water industry is being driven to rethink

how water is used, managed, and conserved.

Within this context, micro domestic greywater

re-use is emerging as a critical part of the solution

– and Aqua Gratis, developed by Cascade Water

Products Ltd, represents a step change in how this

technology can be deployed at scale across new

developments.

Water efficiency: from aspiration to necessity

Recent industry focus, reflected in the MOSL

water efficiency agenda, highlights the growing

importance of reducing per capita consumption

(PCC) and embedding efficiency into both domestic

and non-household markets. Water companies and

regulators are increasingly prioritising demand-side

interventions as a first response to the supplydemand

challenge.

Greywater re-use aligns directly with this shift.

Rather than relying on behavioural change alone,

it delivers a structural reduction in water demand,

recycling lightly used water from showers, baths

for non-potable uses such as toilet flushing.

As the industry moves toward a ‘demand-first’

strategy, solutions like Aqua Gratis provide a

practical route to achieving meaningful reductions

in household consumption.

Aqua Gratis: micro-scale, macro impact

Aqua Gratis is a micro domestic greywater re-use

system designed for seamless integration into

residential developments. Engineered as a modular,

repeatable solution, it enables developers and

housing providers to deploy water re-use at the

level of individual homes.

This decentralised approach offers several

advantages:

s No reliance on large-scale infrastructure

s Minimal planning or regulatory burden

s Reduced installation complexity when

incorporated at build stage

s Scalable across developments of any size

Crucially, it transforms water re-use from a niche

or bespoke intervention into a standardised,

deployable asset class.

Delivering against WRMP and Ofwat priorities

The strategic value of greywater re-use is clearly

reflected in Water Resource Management Plan

(WRMP) frameworks and Ofwat’s PR24 priorities.

Greywater re-use delivers:

s Permanent reductions in per capita

consumption

s A high impact, non-behavioural demand

intervention

s Improved supply-demand balance without new

abstraction

s Increased drought resilience through dry year

demand reduction

s Support for water-neutral development and

growth mitigation

This positioning is critical. As regulatory scrutiny

intensifies, water companies are required to

prioritise low-regret, deliverable solutions that can

be deployed early in AMP periods.

Aqua Gratis meets that requirement directly.

A compelling cost and carbon case

When compared to traditional supply-side

options, the economic and environmental case for

greywater re-use is striking.

Typical costs for greywater re-use fall in the region

of £800-£3,000 per mega-litre, placing it at or

below the lower quartile of supply-side solutions

such as reservoirs and water transfers.

At the same time, lifecycle carbon performance is

significantly lower:

s Greywater re-use: 0.1-0.5 tCO 2 e per Ml

s Reservoirs: 1.5-3.0 tCO 2 e per Ml

s Transfers: 2.0-4.0+ tCO 2 e per Ml

This represents a 4-20× carbon advantage, a

critical factor under Ofwat’s increasing emphasis

on embedded and operational emissions.

Combined, these metrics position Aqua Gratis as

a high value, low-carbon alternative to traditional

infrastructure investment.

Enabling water-neutral development

One of the most immediate applications for Aqua

Gratis is in unlocking development in waterstressed

regions.

Across Eastern England, the Thames basin,

and the South East, water scarcity is already

constraining housing growth. In some areas, new

developments are required to demonstrate water

neutrality – ensuring that additional demand does

not increase net abstraction.

Greywater re-use directly supports this objective by:

s Reducing potable demand at source

s Offsetting new consumption within

developments

s Supporting compliance with planning and

environmental requirements

Regions such as Anglian Water’s operating area,

with heavy reliance on environmentally sensitive

chalk aquifers, stand to benefit particularly strongly.

A delivery model aligned with modern

infrastructure

Perhaps most importantly, Aqua Gratis fits the

evolving delivery model of the water sector.

Unlike large, centralised schemes – which often

involve long lead times, planning risk, and high

capital intensity – micro greywater systems offer:

s High deliverability

s Low regulatory risk

s Rapid deployment at construction stage

s Cost externalisation from utility balance sheets

This makes them ideally suited to developments

where flexibility and innovation are already

reshaping how water infrastructure is delivered.

From niche to mainstream

For many years, greywater re-use has been viewed

as a promising but underutilised technology. Today,

however, the landscape is changing rapidly.

Regulators, water companies, and developers are

increasingly aligned around the need for:

s Lower demand

s Lower carbon

s Faster delivery

s Greater resilience

Aqua Gratis responds directly to all four.

A low-regret pathway forward

As the industry looks toward AMP8 and beyond,

the challenge is not just to identify solutions, but to

deploy them at scale.

Micro domestic greywater re-use – delivered

through systems like Aqua Gratis – represents a

‘low regret’ intervention:

s Cost-competitive

s Carbon-efficient

s Scalable

s Immediately deployable

In a sector traditionally defined by large scale

infrastructure, it offers something different: a

way to embed resilience directly into homes and

communities, one development at a time.

Cascade Water Products Ltd is not just offering

a technology – it is enabling a shift in how

water efficiency is delivered across England’s

built environment. And as water becomes an

increasingly constrained resource, that shift is not

just desirable – it is essential.

WaterSafe backs calls for lead solder &

pipes to be included in property surveys

Prospective homebuyers want to see

greater transparency about lead in

homes in pre-sale surveys, research

by WaterSafe, the UK register of

approved plumbers, shows.

The national WaterSafe survey found

82% of people believe it is important

for home surveys to include checks

for lead pipes, with almost half (48%)

saying this is very important. Only 8%

said such checks were not important.

Business owners also called for

property surveys to check for lead

pipes, with 50% saying it is very

important and 42% saying it is fairly important.

Only 1% said it is not at all important.

The findings echo concerns recently raised by the

Chief Inspector of the Drinking Water Inspectorate

(DWI), Marcus Rink, who said all fittings, taps and

solder should be checked, in addition to pipes.

He said, “Water supply elements should be

Unlocking deep groundwater

Securing reliable groundwater

is a growing priority for

communities and industries

in South Korea, especially in

regions where demand for

domestic and agricultural

supply continues to rise.

In Yeosu, known for its

mountainous terrain and hard

rock layers, local water well

specialist Yeosu Jonghap

Jihasu faced increasing

pressure to drill deeper wells efficiently. To

meet these demands, the company introduced

Atlas Copco’s X28 portable air compressor,

enabling rapid drilling beyond 300 metres in one

of the country’s most challenging geological

environments.

Founded in Yeosu, Yeosu Jonghap Jihasu has long

supported rural and industrial areas throughout

the region. As shallow wells began proving

insufficient for stable and longterm groundwater

supply, the company required equipment that

included in homebuyers’ reports as

standard, so when someone buys a

property, they have clear information

on the type of water supply, and

whether there is any legacy lead in

the property’s water system.”

Lead exposure is particularly harmful

to children, affecting development,

behaviour and long‐term health.

WaterSafe’s research shows 35%

of those surveyed believe sellers

should be legally required to

replace lead pipes before a sale is

completed, while 23% think it should

be the buyer’s choice.

This growing public awareness places increased

pressure on the housing and plumbing sectors to

ensure compliance and prevent illegal materials

from entering drinking water systems.

More advice and the lead-free plumber pledge can

be found at: www.watersafe.org.uk/lead-free

could consistently deliver

the pressure needed for

deep rock penetration

without sacrificing mobility

or cost-efficiency. With the

X28, the company gained the

high pressure performance

necessary to complete deep

water well projects more

quickly and reliably.

Waterwell depths in Yeosu

commonly range from 50 to 150 metres (164 to

492 feet), but growing groundwater demand has

pushed contractors to drill deeper – often through

some of the hardest rock formations in South

Korea.

To improve efficiency without raising operating

costs, the company turned to the 30 bar Atlas

Copco X28, designed specifically to maintain

stable airflow in deep and demanding applications.

Failsafe

conveying of

aggressive

chemicals

Industrial water

treatment is

technically

challenging, especially

for pumps that convey

aggressive chemicals.

To address this issue,

Lutz-Jesco presented

the PERIDOS FXM

peristaltic pump at

IFAT 2026, the world’s

leading trade fair

for environmental

technologies in

Munich, from May 4 to

7, 2026.

The PERIDOS FXM series peristaltic pumps

work with rotating rollers that press on a

flexible hose from the outside, thereby pushing

the medium forward in the direction of flow

with minimal pulsation. This design, in which

the liquid only comes into contact with the

hose, makes the pump robust and resilient.

This means that aggressive chemicals such as

hydrochloric acid for lowering the pH value,

sodium hypochlorite for disinfection, and ferric

chloride for removing phosphates and turbidity,

can be conveyed safely.

Flexible dosing between five bathtubs and one

espresso cup per hour

Lutz-Jesco is presenting the new peristaltic

pumps in three performance classes to cover

a wide range of industrial applications. The

Peridos FXM 1 is an entry-level version with a

flow rate of 2.8 l/h, the FXM 2 is the mid-range

model with 176 l/h, and the FXM 3 is the most

powerful version with up to 840 l/h. This is

about the same as five bathtubs.

Future Homes Standard risks overlooking biggest

household energy use, warns WWHR sector

As the Future Homes Standard (FHS) moves into

its final policy stage before implementation, the

Waste Water Heat Recovery (WWHR) sector, led

by Showersave and Recoup, has identified that the

framework may limit opportunities for reducing

domestic hot water (DHW) demand – despite hot

water accounting for one of the largest energy

demands in the homes of the future (Source: SEA

paper on hot water efficiency in homes 2020).

The WWHR sector has gathered independent

third-party feedback and modelled some national

housebuilders’ house types with leading energy

assessors. This has highlighted issues and warns

that the evolving compliance approach will

reduce design flexibility for housebuilders, with

performance outcomes increasingly shaped by a

narrower set of technologies, dictated by policy.

Under the interim Part L standards introduced in

2021, Waste Water

Heat Recovery

Systems (WWHRS)

are widely adopted

across new-build

specifications. Since

2024, over 160,000

homes have been

fitted with Showersave

& Recoup WWHRS

products, reflecting

their role in helping

developers meet

energy efficiency

targets, while lowering bills for new homeowners.

WWHRS is included in the government’s notional

dwelling for the Future Homes Standard (FHS).

However, based on early review of SAP 10.3, the

WWHR sector has concerns that demand-reduction

Water Management

technologies such as

WWHRS have been

adversely affected in terms

of their compliance impact

and have, in practice, been

deprioritised.

Worked examples within

SAP 10.3 suggest that

it is now possible to

achieve compliance

without incorporating

such systems, which

is inconsistent with the

notional house specification set out for the FHS.

This represents a clear misalignment between

policy intent and modelling outcomes.

As a high-profile project for a blue-chip

automotive brand,

the Berry BMW

& Mini Chiswick

refurbishment

represents

a significant

milestone. It reflects

Luceco’s continued

commitment to

delivering innovative,

specification-led

solutions that support

its strategy to

Grow, Innovate and Sustain – strengthening

relationships with major end users while

showcasing the depth and versatility of its

product portfolio.

Ben Smith, Regional Manager Southern

Projects at Luceco, said, “Flagship automotive

projects demand absolute attention to

detail. The lighting must enhance the brand,

showcase the vehicles perfectly and comply

with strict franchise guidelines. Working

alongside Octave Design Services and

Taylor Design, we delivered a fully integrated

solution across every part of the site – from

the showroom floor to the workshops

and external areas. We’re proud to have

supported Berry Group on such a prestigious

development.”

The transformed Berry BMW & Mini Chiswick

showroom now stands as a benchmark retail

environment – underpinned by a lighting

scheme designed to perform as impressively

as the vehicles it showcases.

NorDan UK expands

into façade solutions

NorDan UK has announced the

acquisition of RED Systems, a

UK-based specialist in architectural

glazing, curtain walling and façade

systems. The move marks a

significant step in NorDan’s UK

growth strategy, strengthening its

early-stage design, compliance

pronounced. By combining NorDan’s

expertise in high-performance timber

and aluminium-clad windows and

doors with RED Systems’ façade

capability, the business will offer a

more integrated approach to building

envelope design and delivery. This

aims to support earlier project

involvement, improve coordination

across systems and reduce risk at

key interface points.

Craig Greenwood, Managing Director

of NorDan UK, said, “We’re really

pleased to welcome RED Systems

into NorDan UK. This is about

bringing together two businesses

that already share a strong focus on

quality, collaboration and delivery.

For our customers, it means a

stronger, more capable delivery

proposition. We’re strengthening

our ability to support projects earlier,

work more closely with partners

and ultimately deliver better, more

coordinated outcomes on site.”

RED Systems has established a strong

national reputation for delivering

Why installers should

visit ThermoSphere at

InstallerSHOW 2026

The InstallerSHOW is a key date in the

calendar for installers and this year

we’re inviting you to come and see how

ThermoSphere can support faster, easier and

more reliable electric heating installations.

Whether you’re already working with electric

systems or looking to expand your horizons,

visiting us at Stand 5C26b is a great

opportunity to explore products that were

actually designed with installers in mind.

“What’s on offer”

Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper show

experience without a bit of fun along the

way. When you visit our stand, you’ll be

able to grab a free ice cream and take a

well-earned break from the busy show

floor. We’re also running a bullseye darts

challenge, giving you the chance to test your

aim and win some seriously good toolkit

prizes. Even if darts isn’t your strong point,

there will still be plenty of other giveaways

available throughout the day, so you won’t

leave empty handed.

Beyond the giveaways, our stand is all

about getting you up to speed with the

latest electric heating products. Our team

of experts will be on hand to offer friendly,

practical advice on anything from product

selection to installation best practice.

Whether you’ve got a specific question or

just want to explore how electric heating

can fit into your projects, we’re here to help.

We’ll also be showcasing our new installer

app, designed to simplify your workflow by

supporting everything from system selection

to setup, helping you save time and keep

jobs running smoothly.

Another way we continue to support

installers beyond the product itself is

through, The Circle, our dedicated installer

community. Designed to reward loyalty and

provide ongoing

value, The Circle

gives members

access to exclusive

benefits, rewards

and support that go

beyond the initial

install. It’s our way

of building long-term

relationships with the

installers we work

with, offering not

just quality products,

but a community

you can be part of.

If you’re not already

a member, it’s

something we’d

highly recommend

asking us about

when you visit

the stand. Gain

accreditation, enjoy

exclusive warranties

and early product

access, alongside

the rewards of

course.

Last year, we

introduced our

T-MO thermostat.

It continues to be a

standout selection

for installers looking

to reduce time spent

on site and reduce the struggle with heating

controls. The T-MO thermostat is designed

with a single objective, making it easy for

installers. Every aspect of T-MO is built for

simplicity, efficiency and convenience. One

of its biggest advantages is that setup is

handled remotely by us, meaning you can

install the thermostat quickly and move on,

without needing to spend time configuring it

on site. It’s a simple idea, but one that makes

a real difference when you’re working to a

tight schedule.

“T-MO, your new

favourite electric

heating control”

Reliability on every install is essential,

which is why our Ultimate heating cable has

been developed to offer complete peace

of mind. As the first cable on the market

with guaranteed reliability, it’s designed to

help protect your

reputation long

after you’ve left the

job. A key feature

is the in-line hotto-cold

joint, which

removes the need

for a bulky cold tail,

making installation

cleaner and easier to

manage. By tackling

common installation

challenges headon,

this cable helps

ensure consistent

performance and

reduces the risk of issues down the line.

Alongside these innovations, we also offer

a wide range of electric heating products

to suit different project requirements. Our

electric towel bars are perfect for modern

bathrooms, combining sleek design with

efficient, controllable heat. For properties

without access to gas, our electric combi

boiler provides a compact and practical

option for both heating and hot water. For

sleek, radiant heat in flexible designs and

styles, our electric radiator and heater range

is a no brainer.

As electric heating continues to play a

bigger role in the move towards low-carbon

products and capabilities, having the right

products and the right support has never

been more important. At ThermoSphere, we

focus on making installations as simple and

reliable as possible, backed by a team that’s

ready to help whenever you need it. If you’re

heading to InstallerSHOW, make sure to visit

us at Stand 5C26b. Come for the ice cream,

stay for the advice and leave with knowledge

that can genuinely improve your next install.

ADI Leak Detection

When a leak goes undetected, the damage

rarely stops at a water bill. Saturated

floors, ruined plaster, high water bills and

weeks of disruption follow. For facilities

and property managers, plumbers and

heating engineers who get the call, the

hardest part is often finding the source

without causing thousands of pounds

worth of damage.

That’s where ADI

Leak Detection

comes in, and why

we’re delighted

to be exhibiting

at InstallerSHOW

2026 on Stand

5I78.

ADI is the UK’s

specialist in

non-invasive

leak detection.

Operating

nationally, our

engineers pinpoint

hidden leaks

including underground, under floors,

behind walls, within heating and plumbing

systems, and even in swimming pools –

using thermal imaging, acoustic listening

equipment, tracer gas and moisture

mapping. The goal is simple: locate

the problem precisely, so the repair is

Meet Spirotech at

InstallerSHOW

targeted, fast and minimally disruptive.

Alongside pinpointing the leak source, we

also carry out plumbing, heating and water

main leak repairs, so ADI can take it from

diagnosis through to a completed fix, all

with one point of contact.

For trade

professionals, ADI

is a flexible partner.

When you hit a leak

you can’t trace,

calling us in protects

your reputation

and your customer

relationship. We

find the leak and

hand the job straight

back to you, or

repair it ourselves,

whichever works

best for you and

your customer.

That partnership

matters whatever your trade. A heating

engineer chasing pressure loss on a

sealed system, a plumber facing an

intermittent damp patch with no obvious

source, a facilities manager responsible for

a portfolio where a slow leak can quietly

run up thousands in damage and wasted

water – all benefit from a specialist who

can isolate the problem on the first visit.

Our reports give you a precise location

and clear evidence, which means quicker

authorisation, cleaner insurance claims,

and a repair you can quote, or have us

complete on your behalf.

Speed is the other half of the equation.

A leak left to spread has the potential to

turn a contained repair into a full stripout,

so getting an accurate diagnosis

early protects both the building and the

relationship with whoever owns it. With

engineers covering the whole country, we

can usually attend quickly.

Whether you’re a sole trader, run a

multi-engineer operation, or manage

properties nationwide, our accurate leak

detection and repair can become a reliable

extension of the service you already offer.

Proactive grease management helping commercial

kitchens reduce drainage disruption

Commercial kitchens in the

hospitality and foodservice

industries are still under pressure

from blocked drains, emergency

maintenance callouts, and stricter

environmental laws. Many operators

are now re-evaluating how grease

is handled in their facilities because

fats, oils, and grease (FOG) continue

to be one of the main causes of

drainage system failures.

The demands of busy kitchen

environments can be too much for

traditional passive grease traps to

handle, especially in high-volume

operations where reliable grease

control is crucial. Automated

solutions that actively handle FOG

before it enters the drainage network

are therefore in greater demand.

The recovery of waste grease

promotes broader sustainability

Did History Actually Teach Us Anything?

A new podcast series – Did History Actually

Teach Us Anything? – has been launched by RRC

International, which looks to explore history’s most

notable events through the eyes of health and

safety experts.

The first three episodes are now available on

Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Amazon Music, with

new instalments due to be released every month.

The first three episodes will cover:

s Episode 1: The Globe Fire

s Episode 2: The Great London Smog

s Episode 3: Three-mile Island

The podcast will take a deep dive into each event in

turn, analysing the cause of

the disaster, looking at how

it could have been avoided,

and scrutinising the

event’s long-term impact.

Upcoming topics include

the sinking of the RMS

Titanic, the Deepwater

Horizon oil spill, Shoreham

Airshow, and the King’s Cross Fire.

Richard Stockley, Managing Director of RRC, says,

“It is very easy to look back on historical events

and say ‘that wouldn’t happen today!’. But this

(OHID), one in five

employees in routine,

The startling figures reveal that routine and manual

prevalence dropping from

30% in 2014 to 20% in

2023, representing a 33%

decrease. However, by

comparison, employees

across all other industries

experienced a larger

decline of 37% during the

same period, with rates

falling from 12.5% to 7.9% on average.

Despite these overall improvements, the data shows

that those in manual labour professions continue

to have the highest smoking rates at 19.5%,

followed closely by the long-term unemployed at

15.3%. While smoking has decreased across the

board, the reduction in manual labour professions,

while substantial, continues to lag behind other

industries. The government has set a target of

reducing the number of smokers to 5% of adults

in England by 2030. To achieve this, encouraging

manual workers to use smoking cessation methods

will play a key role.

Energy & Power

Watt a deal!

Octopus Energy, the UK’s most

popular energy supplier, has

partnered with North of Englandbased

housing association

Together Housing Group to bring

its trailblazing Tenant Power tariff

to 1,500 social homes.

The product unlocks genuine

savings for social housing tenants

– cutting energy bills for tenants

of Together Housing Group’s

housing by up to £200 a year

compared to a standard variable

tariff.

Tenant Power is specifically

designed for social housing and

is the UK’s first tariff to allow

both social housing tenants and

landlords to benefit from smart

green tech.

Homes fitted with solar panels

and a compatible battery system

can harness their own renewable

energy. Any excess solar energy

generated isn’t wasted but stored

in the battery and automatically

sold back to the grid when

demand is highest, helping to

balance the grid.

Tenant Power helps put money

back in tenants’ pockets, while

landlords get paid for any excess

energy sold to the grid, making it

more rewarding to invest in clean

tech upgrades for their properties.

This win-win removes one of the

main barriers to green investment

in social housing by giving

landlords a clear incentive, while

tenants see real savings on their

bills.

The first phase of the partnership

starts with existing properties

managed by Together Housing

Group and is expected to expand

further, including to new builds –

opening the door to affordable,

low carbon energy for even more

families across the UK.

The investment in these homes

is part funded by West Yorkshire

Combined Authority to help scale

up the rollout of renewable power

and help tackle fuel poverty.

Power’ and how to sign up can

Security

Abloy UK provides

access control solution

Abloy UK has supplied CPA Group

with its PROTEC2 CLIQ solution

to streamline access control and

protect assets at its headquarters

in Shotts, Lanarkshire. Replacing

traditional mechanical keys with this

flexible, electronic access control

system ensured physical security

with enhanced key control, remote

management and auditability.

CPA Group is

a provider of

compressed air

and controlled air

solutions, operating

in a highly regulated

industry where both

physical security

and auditability

are essential. The

company required

a system that

would streamline

security processes

while maintaining

robust protection

for sensitive areas, particularly for

shipping containers and site safes

used to store equipment on sites.

Given the nature of the business,

which involves engineers frequently

visiting various sites, having a

system that ensured tight control

over who accessed certain areas and

when was critical.

Prior to working with Abloy UK,

CPA Group faced several key

security challenges, which included

the company’s over-reliance on

traditional mechanical keys, which

were difficult to manage and

control. Engineers would often

arrive on site without the correct

key, which slowed

down operational

efficiencies, plus

they offered no way

to track access.

Additionally, there

was a significant

need for secure

padlocks on steel

containers at

their customer’s

sites, as these

held equipment

needed to carry out

maintenance. CPA

Group needed a

solution that could protect its assets

while offering better control over

who had access to them.

Technology partnership

Greater security & transparency

in access control: Auerswald,

Germany’s leading specialist in

business communication, and

Bird Home Automation GmbH,

manufacturer of DoorBird

intercom systems, announce

their technology partnership. The

first joint project is the integration

of a DoorBird IP video door

station with a telephone device

from Auerswald’s COMfortel

D series via an Auerswald

COMtrexx PBX server. The

system is already in use with

initial customers, and further joint

solutions are planned.

“Like Auerswald, DoorBird

stands for the highest quality

and manufacturing made

in Germany,” says Christian

Auerswald, Managing Director

of Auerswald GmbH & Co.

KG. “We are confident that the

co-operation and the resulting

solutions will meet our joint

expectations.” Sascha Keller,

CEO of Bird Home Automation

GmbH, agrees, “The combination

of our door stations with

Auerswald’s communication

systems brings together both

worlds and offers added value

beyond enhanced IT security.”

By integrating a DoorBird

IP video door station with a

COMfortel D device, door calls

in businesses are now displayed

directly on the connected phone.

A live video feed allows users

to see and speak with visitors

on the COMfortel display. The

COMfortel device and the

DoorBird station can be installed

independently of each other,

as long as a VPN connection

is available. This means they

no longer need to be in the

same building. The system is

particularly suitable for industries

with high security standards,

offering full access control and

entry management.

emergency lighting, extinguishers and other

compliance-critical services, Build Concierge

provides a clear audit trail, automated SLA

management and consistent communication

throughout the service lifecycle.

The result is a more efficient and compliant

operation, with reduced administrative

overheads, faster response times and

complete visibility across service delivery,

communications and compliance activities.

Cleaning, Hygiene & Washrooms

Sustainable washroom innovation

shouldn’t compromise on performance

Velair’s best-in-class range supports facilities

managers with smarter, greener solutions across

hand drying, fragrance and urinal hygiene.

Established in 2012 and Planet Mark certified,

Velair Group is redefining what sustainable

performance looks like in commercial

washrooms, proving that better hygiene

and lower environmental impact are not a

compromise, but a combination of innovative

thinking.

At the heart of Velair’s innovation is its awardwinning

Plug & Play ® hand dryer range. The

Pebble Mini, Pebble+ and F4 Eco all mount onto

the world’s first multi-dryer Terra 4 Docking

Station ® , meaning units can be installed,

upgraded or replaced in seconds with no skilled

labour required.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ha40U9hc8vE

Beyond the ease of installation, the energy and

cost savings are compelling. Each model runs

at a fraction of the cost of paper towels, with

annual energy costs as low as £15-£22 compared

to an estimated £375 in paper towel expenditure

per unit. Velair’s carbon and cost saving report

allows facilities managers to calculate their

exact savings when switching from paper

towels or less efficient dryers, a powerful tool

for ESG reporting and budget planning. The

Pebble+, rated BEST in class, goes further still,

incorporating H13 media filtration, UV-C light

disinfection and ION particle generation to

remove 99.9% of bacteria and viruses from the

localised air.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPNoGEFg4-s

Velair’s commitment to sustainability extends

to urinal hygiene. The V-Mat 30D and V-Mat

BIO urinal screens, both made from recyclable

EVA, deliver reliable odour control for 30 and

60 days respectively, with the BIO model’s

built-in enzyme block actively breaking down

bacteria rather than masking odours. For

facilities looking to make a more significant

environmental impact, the Eco Cap urinal insert

reduces automatic flushing from up to 96 times

per day down to just two, saving over 308,000

litres of water per urinal annually. Across 16

urinals, that’s the equivalent of an Olympic-sized

swimming pool saved every year.

Rounding out Velair’s offering are its fragrance

systems. The Oxy-Gen Powered ® range uses

patented fuel cell technology to release pure

fragrance oil continuously and consistently

for the entire cartridge life, with no aerosols,

no harmful propellants, low VOC and 100%

recyclable cartridges. For larger commercial

spaces, the Serenity Aroma Diffuser covers up

to 900m² and is app-controlled for effortless

scheduling and scent management, paired

with Serenity Lite to create a seamless scent

experience throughout your space.

With a Trustpilot-rated five-star support team,

robust warranties and a relentless focus on

innovation, Velair is the partner of choice for
