In its seasonal climate report, the center said that rainfall in June

was expected to remain near normal across the Kingdom.

Forecasts for July indicated below-average rainfall in Jazan, Baha,

parts of Asir, Makkah, Najran and the Eastern regions, while

precipitation was expected to remain near normal in the rest of

the Kingdom.

The center said that June could SEE INCREASES OF UP TO 1.5

DEGREES CELSIUS ABOVE NORMAL in Jazan, Baha, parts of

Makkah, Asir, Madinah, Riyadh, Qassim, Hail and TABUK.

DURING JULY AND AUGUST, TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO

RISE BY AS MUCH AS 1.6 DEGREES CELSIUS ABOVE NORMAL in

Jazan, Baha, and parts of Asir and Makkah.

The center stressed the importance of following reports and

updates issued through its official channels to support

preparedness in operational and service sectors and ENHANCE

PLANNING FOR SUMMER CLIMATE CONDITIONS.

UN WARNS POSSIBLY STRONG

EL NINO COULD PUSH GLOBAL

TEMPERATURES HIGHER

49 | P a g e

50 | P a g e

THERE IS AN 80 PERCENT CHANCE OF THE EL NINO

PHENOMENON DEVELOPING BETWEEN JUNE AND AUGUST,

INCREASING THE RISK OF EXTREME WEATHER EVENTS, THE UN

WEATHER AGENCY SAID ON JUNE 2, 2026. (AFP)

GENEVA: The United Nations weather agency on Tuesday

forecast a moderate or possibly strong El Nino that could DRIVE

UP GLOBAL TEMPERATURES AND INCREASE THE RISK OF

EXTREME WEATHER OVER THE COMING MONTHS. El Nino is a

periodic warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and

eastern Pacific Ocean, which typically lasts between nine and 12

months, according to the World Meteorological Organization.

The WMO said warm ocean waters were FUELING EL NINO’S

DEVELOPMENT AND PREDICTED ABOVE-AVERAGE

TEMPERATURES IN MOST PARTS OF THE WORLD FROM JUNE TO

AUGUST. THE WMO SAID IT IS LIKELY EL NINO WILL CONTINUE

UNTIL NOVEMBER.

“WE NEED TO PREPARE FOR A POTENTIALLY STRONG EL NIÑO

EVENT — WHICH WILL EXACERBATE DROUGHT AND HEAVY

RAINFALL AND INCREASE THE RISK OF HEATWAVES BOTH ON

LAND AND IN THE OCEAN,” said WMO Secretary-General Celeste

Saulo.

The most recent El Nino, in 2023-24, contributed to 2024 BEING

THE HOTTEST YEAR ON RECORD, Saulo added. A shift has been

observed in the Equatorial Pacific, with sea surface temperatures

51 | P a g e

rising rapidly from late April to mid-May, suggesting El Nino

conditions were developing, the WMO said.

THE AGENCY SAID IT HAS OBSERVED UNUSUALLY WARM

SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS ACROSS THE TROPICAL PACIFIC WITH

TEMPERATURES EXCEEDING 6°CELSIUS ABOVE AVERAGE,

CREATING A RESERVOIR OF HEAT THAT IS DRIVING SURFACE

WARMING.

The weather pattern is known to disrupt regional climates,

potentially bringing increased rainfall to southern South

America, the southern United States, parts of the Horn of Africa

and central Asia, while causing drought in Australia, central

America, Indonesia, and sections of southern Asia.

IT CAN ALSO HAVE A WARMING EFFECT ON THE GLOBAL

CLIMATE, and fuel hurricanes in the central and eastern Pacific

Ocean, the WMO said. “THE WORLD MUST TREAT IT AS THE

URGENT CLIMATE WARNING IT IS. EL NIÑO CONDITIONS WILL

POUR FUEL ON THE FIRE OF A WARMING WORLD,” said UN

Secretary-General António Guterres, urging a shift away from

fossil fuels toward renewable energy. While there is no evidence

that climate change increases the frequency or intensity of El

Nino events, IT CAN MAKE ASSOCIATED IMPACTS SUCH AS

EXTREME HEATWAVES AND HEAVY RAINFALL WORSE, according

to the WMO.

SPAIN RECORDS HIGHEST MAY HEAT-

RELATED DEATH TOLL ON RECORD

MADRID — Spain recorded its highest number of heat-related

deaths ever for the month of May, with 101 fatalities linked to

high temperatures, according to estimates published Wednesday

by the Health Ministry.

53 | P a g e

The figure is the highest recorded for May since tracking began

in 2015 and is 3.6 times higher than the average number of heatrelated

deaths registered during the month over the past

decade, the ministry said. A late-May heatwave brought record

temperatures to 23 provinces across Spain, according to the

national meteorological agency AEMET.

The agency also reported that parts of the Mediterranean and

Cantabrian seas experienced their warmest May temperatures

on record. The mortality data was released as Spain launched its

2026 national heat prevention plan aimed at reducing illnesses

and deaths associated with extreme temperatures. According to

the Health Ministry, an estimated 27,564 people died from

causes linked to high temperatures between 2015 and 2025.

The deadliest year was 2022, with 4,789 deaths, followed by

2025 with 3,832. Health authorities warned that the risk of death

increases by between 9.1% and 10.7% for every degree Celsius

above established health-risk thresholds.

The ministry said people aged 75 and older remain the most

vulnerable group during extreme heat events, while young

children, pregnant women and individuals with chronic illnesses

also face elevated health risks. Looking ahead, AEMET forecasts

a high probability of above-average temperatures across Spain

during June, July and August, particularly in the northern regions,

along the Mediterranean coast and in the Balearic Islands.

AMERICA BRACES FOR EXTREME HEAT

AS ‘SUPER EL NIÑO’ RAPIDLY

STRENGTHENS

55 | P a g e

Scientists are warning that a powerful El Niño weather

pattern could bring a summer of intense heat and volatile

weather across large portions of the United States.

According to the WORLD METEOROLOGICAL ORGANIZATION,

THERE IS NOW AN 80% CHANCE OF AN EL NIÑO DEVELOPING

BETWEEN JUNE AND AUGUST 2026 AND A 90% CHANCE IT WILL

CONTINUE THROUGH AT LEAST NOVEMBER.

THE AGENCY WARNED THE EVENT COULD BRING EXTREME

HEAT “NEARLY EVERYWHERE,” INCLUDING THE UNITED STATES.

While the climate establishment continues pushing political

narratives tied to every weather event, El Niño itself is not new.

It is a naturally occurring Pacific Ocean weather pattern that has

operated for centuries and cycles between warm El Niño and

cool La Niña phases every two to SEVEN YEARS.

Still, forecasters say THIS YEAR’S PATTERN IS SHAPING UP TO BE

UNUSUALLY STRONG.

According to the WMO, sea-surface temperatures in the centraleastern

Equatorial Pacific are nearing El Niño thresholds while

subsurface ocean temperatures are running about 6 degrees

Celsius above average.

Those warmer waters release heat into the atmosphere and

OFTEN LEAD TO HOTTER GLOBAL TEMPERATURES FOR

MONTHS.

56 | P a g e

For Americans, the biggest concern is what that could mean

during peak summer months.

The southern United States could see heavier rainfall and

flooding while LARGE PORTIONS OF THE WEST FACE ELEVATED

HEAT AND DROUGHT CONCERNS. METEOROLOGISTS ARE ALSO

WARNING ABOUT INCREASED STRESS ON POWER GRIDS AS AIR

CONDITIONING DEMAND RISES DURING PROLONGED

HEATWAVES.

SCIENTISTS ARE EVEN RAISING THE POSSIBILITY THAT 2026

COULD BECOME THE HOTTEST YEAR EVER RECORDED.

“The science is clear: EL NIÑO IS ARRIVING ON OUR DOORSTEP

IN THE COMING MONTHS WITH 90% CERTAINTY,” United

Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said.

“EL NIÑO CONDITIONS WILL POUR FUEL ON THE FIRE OF A

WARMING WORLD,” he added.

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo also warned the event

“will exacerbate drought and heavy rainfall and INCREASE THE

RISK OF HEATWAVES BOTH ON LAND AND IN THE OCEAN.”

Forecasters are comparing the developing system to the

powerful 1997-98 El Niño event, which helped DRIVE RECORD

GLOBAL TEMPERATURES AND BROUGHT INTENSE SUMMER

HEAT TO PARTS OF THE WORLD.
