About the Work, from the composer on December 26, 2025
In December of 2024, Greg Boccuti asked me about writing for the groups in the Council Rock
North High School band program. While I have completed singular commissions for many
different band programs, this was a first. As we talked through the project, Greg emphasized he
wanted each piece in the commission series to go where my creative energy would take it. I
deeply appreciate his trust in this regard to create three unique works for the students in the
Council Rock Bands.
The past 14 months proved to be a time of personal challenge, as my father passed away in
October of 2024 and my mother passed unexpectedly in May of 2025. My experience throughout
this time was perhaps not typical for what other people might experience. The title of the work is
taken from a verse Ecclesiastes 9:11 (my favorite book), and it has been resonating in my mind
since dad’s passing last October to Mom’s passing this past May:
"I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the
strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but
time and chance happens to them all."
While I am still grieving and miss them both every day, I can say the journey has been life and
faith reaffirming. In life, I am personally anchored by faith, family, and friends. Although one of
those anchors came lose momentarily during this time, the other two held firm. It was hard to
ignore what this life experience taught me. So the music in this piece is a journey about finding
peace regardless of circumstances, weathering the storms of life, and I hope this piece can give
others that some comfort and hope too.
The opening clarinet solo, plaintive in nature, sets up the motif that is later developed and
expanded upon at measure 52. Throughout the work, strains of the hymn tune “It Is Well With
My Soul” can be heard (at first in the minor, and later in the major). The original rhythm has
been altered as each statement occurs in ¾ time. While the chorale first statement at measure 72
is important, the solo flute (and later joined by clarinet) take precedence in the overall canvas of
sound for the ensemble. The tension in the score beginning at measure 119 through 141 must be
wholly embraced by the ensemble (all voices are valid). The optional solo for trombone at
measure 145 should be played freely and lyrically. The clarinet solo returns at measure 148,
though now in the major, and sets up the a full statement of the chorale at measure 165. Here
again all voices are of equal importance in completing this journey of perseverance, hope, and
resolution. I would encourage directors to exercise tasteful artistry with the tempo, allowing the
ebb and flow of the music to find a peaceful retreat from measure 201 to the final bar.
Thank you in advance for selecting this piece for your ensemble. Regardless of where we might
find ourselves in life, difficult times will find us. For some, our time will come and there is always
a chance it is when we least expect it. Through these seasons of life we must anchors to keep us
from being taken out to sea, as Time and Chance happens to us all.
About the Composer
Travis J. Weller (1973) is currently serving as the Assistant Chair for the Music Department at
Messiah University. In addition to that position, he is the Director of Music Education. Active in
several national organizations, he begins serving Phi Beta Mu International as President in
2026. He is in frequent demand as a guest conductor for honor bands and composer in residence
sessions with school bands across the Eastern United States. As a composer, Travis has published
works available from multiple national publishers. Travis resides in Grove City with his wife,
their three daughters and a son.
