Police are investigating whether

a group of partying university

students may have started a large

hedge fire in Lincoln.

The 100m blaze on Ellesmere

Junction Rd, across from the

university, broke out at 12.47am

on King’s Birthday and required

nine fire trucks to bring it

under control. Several nearby

houses were also evacuated as a

precaution.

Milestone blazer feels

‘pretty good’ after

devastating diagnosis

Thomas Cockburn is not letting

a shock diagnosis get in the way

of his life and achievements,

having received his 100-game

blazer from the Springston

Rugby Club.

The 28-year-old was

diagnosed with Motor Neurone

Disease (MND) in September,

forcing him off the field

prematurely, just three games

shy of 100 division 1 matches.

But in a gesture of goodwill,

Springston presented Cockburn

with his blazer on Saturday.

Said club president

Courtney Whitmore: “It wasn’t

that he didn’t play those three,

it’s that he couldn’t play those

three”.

Cockburn, who played

lock, told Selwyn Times the

recognition made him feel

“pretty good”.

“It's [acknowledged] a lot of

dedication, a lot of time given

for one team – it's taken eight or

nine years playing for the same

team, turning up every week

and, yeah, playing rugby,” he

said.

“I want to thank the club for

all the work that they're doing.

“They didn't have to do this

for me.

“I'm very grateful that they

are still thinking of me, and

doing what they can to help and

support.

“Both me and my family are

really thankful.”

Cockburn went to a

neurologist for calf and back

pain last year, only to be given

the devastating news he had

MND.

“I'm coping with it in my own

way.

“I just try not to think about it

too much, so that I can just kind

of continue on with life.”

Cockburn started playing with

the Springston colts about a

decade ago.

“Then they started a division 1

team, and I just moved up with

them, and I've been playing it

ever since,” he said.

“There was a core of people

that we played with from the

start. Three others got 100

games as well.”

Whitmore said the club had

already got Cockburn’s blazer

made before his diagnosis.

“Then obviously ‘TC’ was

unable to play anymore.

“So after chats with him and

his family and the coaches, we

decided that we would do a

blazer presentation on club day

this season anyway.

“It just really shows that

kind of team spirit and

camaraderie, and that

commitment of playing at a high

level."

Whitmore said the

presentation went beyond

rugby. Club vice-president and

teammate, Josh Farrar-de Wagt,

said it got “a wee bit” emotional.

“Given all the circumstances

and everything that's going on

with him, and having played

with him, it was quite moving to

me. It takes so long to get there.

He just seems to be getting on

with it, like he doesn't seem

any different to me in terms of

mentality or anything like that.”

Cockburn said people have

told him he has the right

attitude.

“I don't know if it's a

compliment or not, but it's nice

to hear. I've kind of always had

a bit of a laid-back attitude,” he

said.

Cockburn and his

partner Eilish Robinson-Kelly

got married in a small,

private ceremony with

family and friends. The

newlyweds are now headed

for Europe.

“It’s those sorts of things that

are always going to get me

going, things like holidays or big

events,” Cockburn said.

He has made a bank of voice

recordings in case he loses

his speech, has a wheelchair

that he is gett used to, and an

occupational therapist has

helped raise the height of his

couch and put stools around the

house.

“We're already on top of it

and not on the back foot.”

Heath NZ is refusing to say who is

providing the doctors, which have

enabled Darfield Hospital to reopen

for patients again. “Details of an

agreement are still being worked

through so we’re not in a position

to release that information as yet,”

said Health NZ spokesperson,

to be available by the end of August

or early September following a trial

Springfield Donut upgrades

The Springfield Donut and

surrounding park is receiving

a $34,000 upgrade. The work

includes new rubber matting

under the donut with the existing

undersurface showing signs of

deterioration and lifting. Work also

includes laying additional footpath,

adding a picnic table pad, new

fencing, and new turf.

College still in dark over rebuild funding

Ellesmere College is still waiting

to hear whether it will receive

funding to complete its longawaited

rebuild.

The uncertainty comes as

several other schools across the

district have had expansions

confirmed.

The college has been left in

limbo since earlier this year, with

the next stage of its $55 million

rebuild yet to be funded.

Education Minister Erica

Stanford announced on Friday

funding for four additional classrooms

at Darfield School, six

additional classrooms at Darfield

High School, and the next

stage of Rolleston College’s senior

campus.

Stanford also confirmed plans

for an 18-classroom school in

the Earlsbrook subdivision in

Lincoln.

“We are seeing strong housing

development in Rolleston, Lincoln

and Darfield. As more families

move into these areas, we need to

build more classrooms to keep up

with demand,” Stanford said.

us to get ahead of demand,

so schools are ready for the

young families arriving in these

Before the announcement, the

Ministry of Education was unable

to confirm whether Ellesmere

College would receive funding

for its next stage.

“Now that the Budget has been

announced, the decision on the

final stage of Ellesmere College’s

rebuild is being considered

alongside other school redevelopment

projects through our

national prioritisation process,”

ministry regional infrastructure

manager Simon Cruickshank

said.

“Following Cabinet approvals,

decisions will be communicated

to schools from the start of the

new financial year in July.”

Stanford’s office was unable

to respond to Selwyn Times by

deadline.

Meanwhile, in Prebbleton,

construction has started on a

new year 0-8 school, Koromiko

Mākoha, which is due to open at

the start of term 1 next year.

Big response to amalgamation survey

Thousands of people are giving

their opinion on whether the

district should amalgamate

with its neighbours.

The council has 60 days

to meet the Government’s

deadline to submit proposals on

how to amalgamate, or face the

Government doing it.

To gather community

feedback, the council launched

a survey on Friday which is

open until midnight on June 21.

As of Monday morning, the

survey had

more than 4500

submissions.

It asks

whether the

council should

combine with

neighbouring

councils, take

on the functions

currently

delivered by

Environment Canterbury, both

options, or neither.

Mayor Lydia Gliddon is

open-minded about the result

and wants to hear what the

community prefers.

“These changes will affect

how local decisions are made

and how services are delivered

in Selwyn. We need to know

what matters most to the

community. We’ll then take

that feedback to the discussion

table with our neighbouring

councils,” she said.

One option is for Selwyn,

Christchurch, and Waimakariri

to create a greater Christchurch

super city. Selwyn Times

readers have previously said

they opposed the idea of Selwyn

joining a super city, raising

concerns about higher rates

and less investment in the

district.

Gliddon has also said she does

not believe a super city is the

“right answer”.

“I don’t think it is the best

outcome for the whole of

Selwyn, and that is what we

need to look at.”

Heritage funding supports tireless Glentunnel church volunteers

For more than a century, St Andrew’s of

the Glen has watched over Glentunnel

and the building remains one of the

village’s most recognisable heritage

landmarks, thanks to persistent effort

by local volunteers and support from

the Selwyn District Council Heritage

Protection Fund.

The small Arts and Crafts Gothic

Revival church was built on land donated

by the Deans family and opened debtfree

in 1915.

Barbara Broughton has been part of

the church’s story since marrying into

the district in 1980. From first attending

her husband Gordon’s family church,

Barbara’s connection deepened through

the long-time locals she met, whose lives

were intertwined with the little church.

“I met some really interesting people

through the church, mostly elderly,

who I had a lot of respect for, like Lewis

Wilson and his brother Challice, as well

as Natalie MacArthur and Violet Baker,

people who had all lived in the district

for a long time,” says Barbara who

discovered that the church over the years

provided community support far beyond

the Sunday worship.

“I’ve got a real heart for this little

church. Lewis told me how his mother

had died in childbirth when she was

only 33 and the ladies in the church had

looked after the two little boys when

their father had to go back to work.

“It wasn’t just a building. It was part of

how the community looked after itself.”

Getting to know the community

created a determination to preserve the

church not simply as a place of worship,

but as a reminder of Glentunnel’s shared

history.

That determination was tested after

the Canterbury earthquakes. An initial

engineering report commissioned by

the Presbyterian Church left uncertainty

about the church’s condition, and

Broughton said builders struggled to

interpret exactly what work was needed.

Without clarity, the congregation could

not confidently reopen the building for

services or wider community use.

Funding from the Selwyn District

Council Heritage Protection Fund made

a crucial difference by enabling a second

engineering assessment that found the

church was not earthquake-prone, giving

caretakers the confidence to plan for

reopening and renewed use.

“That was a huge relief. It meant we

could start thinking about the church

being used again.”

After the earthquakes, some in the

wider church community questioned

whether the maintenance cost of the

church was justified for such a small

community.

Instead of waiting for others to

determine their future, Broughton and

the late Violet Baker started baking and

launched the Little Glen Café, opening

the church on Sundays for coffee, baking

and conversation. In the process they

raised enough money to upgrade the

kitchen to commercial standard and help

with the church’s upkeep.

“With the Wilson brothers in mind,

Violet, Natalie and myself decided to

work really hard to make sure we can

afford the upkeep,” says Broughton,

who has also started repainting the

1970s brown exterior of the church in

a traditional off-white, with some help

from her brother.

“It’s one of those jobs where there is

always something that needs doing. But

if you keep on top of it, you stop the little

problems turning into big ones.”

This year, Broughton again turned

to the Selwyn District Council Heritage

Protection Fund after a builder identified

that a rotten piece in the belltower posed

a risk.

“The council generously granted

enough money to take the belltower off

to have it repaired. And I will paint it

when it’s down,” says Broughton, who

will also paint the new wooden section

before it is installed.

“That saves us hiring the cherry picker

twice,” says Broughton, who believes

St Andrew’s is worth all the effort as

the only early Anglican, Catholic and

Presbyterian church in the Glentunnel-

Coalgate area to survive on its original

site and remain in church use.

For Broughton, restoration is about

more than timber and paint, and she

wants to see the church used by the

whole community.

“We have started using it for

gatherings and birthday parties and

later this year, we are planning our first

church service since the earthquakes.”

Village seeks feeding

ban to protect kea

feeding the alpine parrots.

The Arthur’s

wants the council

a bylaw for the

alpine village to

protect the endangered

bird.

If successful, the

bylaw would be

“Kea can find their own food,”

to speak up.”

who continue to feed the kea

despite being told not to.

“I told one lady recently not to

do it, and she kept doing it and

told me there were no rules and

she could do what she wanted,”

she said.

Habluetzel said the best thing

people can do for kea is to treat

the birds like any other wild

animal and avoid interacting with

them.

“I try to be as boring as possible

around kea,” she said.

southern side of Rolleston will

In addition to the supermarket,

the development will include

space for four retail stores.

“This is a really significant project

for Woolworths as we are

developing more than just a freestanding

store. This is a retail

centre with potential to have a

an online delivery hub

sky’ requirement, the new regulations have a grace period that

lasts until 16 October 2026.

— Damage to property and other trees.

— Damage to the electricity network.

— Livestock death or damage.

metres of power lines, a close approach consent is required from

Orion before work commences.

trimmed and/or advise us of the time and location of the trim

A toll to Chch?: ‘Impractical, naive’

The idea (Christchurch City

councillor Sam MacDonald) of

charging non-residents to enter

or use Christchurch is narrow,

impractical and economically

naïve.

Christchurch is not an isolated

city-state; it is the hub of a

regional economy. People from

Selwyn, Waimakariri, Hurunui,

Banks Peninsula and beyond

come into the city to shop,

work, study, attend medical

appointments, use the airport,

visit family, go to events and

support local businesses.

The wider region contributes

significantly to Christchurch’s

prosperity. Surrounding

communities are not a burden

on the city – they are part of what

keeps it alive.

Any attempt to separate

“residents” from “non-residents”

would be expensive, bureaucratic

and unfair. It could require costly

vehicle recognition systems,

create confusion for people

who live, work or own property

across district boundaries,

and damage the relationship

between Christchurch and the

communities that support it.

Christchurch should be

thinking like the centre of a

shared regional economy, not

like a gated suburb. Policies

that punish people simply

because they live outside the

council boundary show a

lack of understanding of how

communities actually interact.

A modern city needs co-operation,

not small-minded division.

Christchurch City councillor Sam MacDonald’s suggestion that non-Christchurch residents could be charged a toll to enter the

city has been met with strong criticism.

wider region succeeds with it.

It is with great interest the

height houses have to be now

(Selwyn Times June 3). It appears

the majority of Darfield is also

in a flood zone under this new

ruling.

No one in living memory can

remember the specific area I

am located in being flooded. It

has come close (250m) but that

was because the riverbed under

the bridge at Bangor Rd had not

been cleaned out.

This is another good example

of someone blindly using a

computer program with no

practical experience and not

talking to those on the ground.

One major effect of this is the

hike in insurance costs which

cannot be afforded.

Council has got right down to

the granular area by addressing

dog registration, cutting event

Lincoln Envirotown Trust is again

urging everyone to take up their

phones, cameras or anything

of a short film that showcases an

issue of interest or importance in

our environment.

This competition is now held

every two years, and it is always

clear to the judges, the public,

schools and friends of entrants that

this media gives a very enjoyable

and insightful means of examining

environmental issues.

adults’ category which

powerfully examined

the deterioration of

Lake Waihora. In 2024

it was won by a great

age entry that took us

through the building and

opening of a “Bug Hotel”

2026 Young Tōtara Awards to

two outstanding young women –

Kate Olijkan and Kaylee Hill.

The awards recognise leadership,

courage, community spirit

and a commitment to creating

positive change. Recipients

and a young tōtara tree.

her dedication, leadership and

commitment to the local youth

She has actively developed

her leadership skills through

roles including head student at

Selwyn Art Show 2026:

Celebrating 24 Years of Creativity

The much-anticipated Selwyn Art Show returns in

2026 for its 24th year, continuing its long tradition

of celebrating creativity and artistic talent from

throughout Canterbury and beyond. The event

will be held at the Rolleston Community Centre,

opening on Friday evening 12th June and open to

public Saturday 13th to Sunday 14th June 2026.

Featuring over 70 artists, as well as talented

youth artists and artwork from local schools,

the exhibition will showcase a diverse range of

painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking,

ceramics, and fibre crafts. Organised by the Arts

Heart Selwyn Central Arts Council, the show has

become one of Selwyn’s most anticipated cultural

events, drawing visitors from across the region

each year.

This year’s featured

artist is Selwyn based

Brett Pettit, a painter

and mural artist with

strong ties to Kaikōura

and the South Island

landscape. Brett

began painting murals

while growing up in

Kaikōura. Around 36

years ago, a business

next door to his family

home asked him to

paint a large mural on their wall, launching what

would become a lifelong creative journey.

Art was always close to home. Brett’s mother

owned a gallery on Kaikōura’s main street, and

whenever he painted something, she would sell it.

Entirely self-taught, Brett describes learning mural

work in public spaces as being “thrown in the

deep end.” Painting large-scale works outdoors

could often be fraught, but those experiences

helped shape his artistic confidence and style.

Brett draws much of his inspiration from the

wilderness and wildlife of the South Island.

He has long admired Robert Bateman, whose

work influenced his appreciation for nature and

realism. For Brett, the landscapes he paints need

to feel personal and familiar. In Kaikōura, simply

looking at the skyline evokes

memories and ideas that

naturally find their way into

his work. He believes he must

have a genuine connection to a

place to create meaningful art.

While Brett is well known for his

dramatic seascapes filled with

movement and atmosphere, his

recent work has shifted toward

the interior landscapes of the

Mackenzie Country, particularly

its tussock-covered plains. After

building a tiny home near Twizel, the region has

increasingly appeared in his paintings. Despite

this new direction, the pull of the ocean remains

strong, and seascapes continue to feature

prominently in his art because of the “drama and

life” they contain.

Visitors to the Selwyn Art Show will have the

opportunity to view and purchase Brett’s latest

work alongside pieces from many other talented

local and regional artists.

An Opening Night event will be held on Friday

12th June. Tickets can be purchased through the

Arts Heart website. Guests will enjoy drinks and

nibbles while having the exclusive opportunity

to view and purchase artwork before the show

officially opens to the public.

The Selwyn Art Show will be open Saturday and

Sunday from 10am to 4pm at the Rolleston

weekend, and EFTPOS will be available on site.

Teacher’s Struggle to Sleep

Margaret’s Fitbit tells a

remarkable story giving hope to

thousands with sleep problems.

For 35 years, Margaret

commanded classrooms of

teenagers. The retired high school

teacher who could silence a room

with a look, the woman who

marked essays until midnight and

still bounded into school by 7am.

Energy was never her problem.

“I loved those early mornings,”

she recalls. “Cup of tea, lesson

plans on the table. Sleep was

something I did well.”

But at 68, good sleep had

become a thing of the past. Like

nearly half of New Zealanders over

50, she faced nightly battles that

“I’d dread the moment the lights

went out,” Margaret explains.

“I’d lie there for hours, tossing

and turning. Even when I did fall

asleep, I’d wake multiple times.

The mornings were the worst. I felt

like I was dragging myself to the

kettle.”

She found herself avoiding

invitations. Book club felt like too

much effort. Even phone calls with

her grandchildren left her drained.

“You start to withdraw,” she

admits. “Not because you don’t

want to see people, but because

not who I am.”

From Prebbleton to the World Cup

Next week New Zealand will

return to the FIFA World Cup

for the first time in 16 years –

with Prebbleton’s Finn Surman

likely to be in the thick of the

action.

Surman, 22, is expected to

start in defence for the All

Whites in their World Cup

opener against Iran on Tuesday

after playing in both of New

Zealand’s World Cup warm-up

matches – a 4-0 defeat to Haiti

and a creditable 1-0 loss to

England.

The centre-back grew up

in Prebbleton and played for

Selwyn United as a youngster

before moving to

Wellington at 15

to join the Wellington

Phoenix

academy.

He went on

to play for the

Phoenix in

the Australian

A-League and

now turns out

for American

Lee Padmore

club Portland Timbers in Major

League Soccer.

Since making his

international debut in 2023,

Surman has played 18 times for

the All Whites.

Lee Padmore coached

Surman at Selwyn United and

later at the Phoenix, and said it

had been special to watch his

rise through the ranks.

make his mark in New Zealand’s

group matches against Iran,

Egypt and Belgium. The All

Surman played for Selwyn United as a

junior before leaving at 15 to join the

Wellington Phoenix academy.

“It’s a great opportunity. People

forget he’s only 22 years old,

so he’s still young in the grand

scheme of things.

“The best thing about Finn is

he’ll go in at a level and always

work his way to the next level.

Darfield daring

to dream of

return to final

Twenty-one years ago, twins

Lance and Kieran Meikle were

ball boys at Darfield’s last

combined country final, when

the side beat Southern 10-8.

On Saturday, Lance will have

the chance to help Darfield reach

their first final since that 2005

triumph. Kieran, meanwhile, has

spent most of the season sidelined

with a broken leg.

Standing in their way is

Kaiapoi, who topped pool B with

eight wins from eight matches.

Groundwater is aware of the

challenge ahead.

“They’re unbeaten for a reason.

We’ve just got to throw

everything we can at them. That

will be the mindset this week,”

he said.

“We’re trying to do something

Darfield hasn’t done in over 20

years, so there’s a bit of motivation

there for us to create our

own path as a Darfield team.”

Darfield booked their place

in the semi-finals with a 35-26

quarter-final win over Ohoka

on Saturday, reaching the last

four for the first time since

2017.

“I’ve never been part of a

combined country semi since

I’ve been at Darfield and there’s

a lot of boys in the same boat as

well,” Groundwater said.

“You probably only have this

group of fellas together once

Groundwater’s co-coach, Blair

McIlroy, played in Darfield’s

victorious 2005 grand final as

a 21-year-old openside flanker.

More than two decades later, he

still occasionally pulls on the

boots when required.

“It’s been a long time and to

still be hanging in there is quite

nice. I just love the Darfield

feel,” McIlroy said.

He played alongside his twin

brother Scott and older brother

Mark.

The Meikle twins, who were

five at the time of Darfield’s

last title, have both gone on to

play more than 100 division 1

matches for the club.

Joining them on the century

list is tighthead prop Colin

Payne, who brought up his 100th

division 1 appearance for Darfield

in Saturday’s quarter-final

win.

He played his first game in

2014 and was converted into a

front rower, having previously

played second-five and No 8.

After spending several seasons

back at his original club, Kirwee,

Payne returned to Darfield in

2019 and has since become a

stalwart in the front row.

“I’m one of those people who

would prefer to go out with the

team, but getting out there by

yourself and having a look at the

clubrooms, the lads and all the

support you’ve had over those

easy to play for a club like Darfield,”

he said.

Groundwater said taking their

opportunities, making first-up

tackles and staying connected

would be crucial against Kaiapoi.

“If we can do that, then we’ll

give ourselves a good chance, but

if we can’t defend then it could

be a long day at the office.”

Rather than focusing on

weaknesses in the opposition,

Groundwater said Darfield

would concentrate on their own

strengths.

“Our forward pack has been

immense this year, they’ve really

held it down for us and we’ve got

a few exciting outside backs that

if we get them in some space can

be pretty lethal.

“We’ll get some strong carries

through them (the forwards) and

try and find a bit of joy in that.”

If victorious, Darfield will face

either unbeaten Waihora or

Glenmark-Cheviot in the final.

Waihora edged Ashley 31-28

in their quarter-final and are

chasing back-to-back combined

country titles.

District goes the distance for marathon

Nearly 1000 runners and walkers

took part in the Selwyn Marathon

during King’s Birthday weekend,

starting and finishing at the

Lincoln Event Centre.

Organised by Selwyn-based

CJM Events, the race route ran

out to Rossendale Winery and

along Old Tai Tapu Rd, with

competitors enjoying warm

autumn conditions and a vibrant

atmosphere.

The men’s marathon was won

by Andy Good in an event record

time of 2hr 27min 37sec, with

Maya Edmondson claiming the

women’s marathon in 3hr 1min

45sec.

Brett Clifford won the men’s

half marathon in 1hr 12min

31sec, while Mel Aitken set a new

women’s event record of 1hr

22min 46sec.

The 10km event also produced

a new record, Cameron Avery

winning the men’s title in 29min

18sec. Alexandra Hawke won the

women’s 10km in 38min 33sec.

Event director John Moore

said the quality of racing was

outstanding.

“To see records falling across

several events despite the warm

and humid conditions was

exceptional. The standard of competition

continues to improve

every year.”

One of the day’s most inspiring

performances came from Aucklander

Garth Barfoot. At 90 years

old, he completed the 10km event

in 2hr 28min 22sec, winning the

specially-created 90-plus age category

and proudly standing atop

the podium afterwards.

“Watching Garth finish was

one of the highlights of the day,”

Moore said.

“He reminds us that these

events aren’t just about winning.

They’re about setting goals,

staying active and proving age

doesn’t have to define what you

can achieve.”

The general public is to be advised that a New

Zealand Army Exercise will be conducted in the

Canterbury Region, including Burnham Military

Camp and associated training areas and West

Melton Rifle Range area over the above period.

The exercise will involve up to 40 personnel of

Defence Health School from Burnham

Military Camp.

Training will involve NZDF personnel conducting

a range shoot at Aylesbury Range using small arms

on 17 June between 3pm and 7.30pm, followed

by a night walk to West Melton Rifle Range.

Personnel will also be transported in the areas

using vehicles by day and night. Various medical

scenarios will be conducted in the Burnham

Military Camp training areas.

The New Zealand Army takes fire risk seriously and

will ensure fire mitigation is present.

bill from Selwyn Water from 1 July.

You’ll receive a mailout with more

information on how to read your bill.

a separate invoice for your

metered water use

Instead, you will receive one combined

bill per property, each quarter, billed by

Selwyn Water.

This will include:

• All drinking water (including metered

are billed, the services you rely on will

continue as normal – now supported

by a dedicated team with a stronger

focus on how they are managed and

maintained for the future.

Make your new home street smart

When choosing a plan, something that is often forgotten is how

the house will look from the street.

Developers of residential subdivisions

generally have covenants

relating to this and will require

concept drawings along with a

landscape plan to be submitted

for approval before lodging a

building consent application.

Their aim is to preserves

the quality of the subdivision,

something that benefits all who own

properties there.

Certain claddings may be specified

along with range of roof pitch and an

expectation for windows on the side of

the home facing the street, as well as

landscaping that enhances the overall

look of the subdivision.

To avoid slowing the process down

it is best to plan all aspects of your

home’s design before seeking developer

approval and lodging consent documents

with the Council.

In viewing the plans for a home, the

developer will want to see a street frontage

that is attractive. Garages that have

plain walls on the street side may be

frowned on with a request for changes

to be made. There may even be specific

requirements in relation to the garage

door.

Where a street frontage faces north

or west, large windows and sliders are

likely. When the front of the home faces

south so will not capture any sunlight,

there may be less desire to include

windows however this is often something

a developer requires. An option

is to incorporate long narrow windows

which give a home street presence yet

do not compromise interior wall space.

Opaque narrow windows can be incorporated

into the garage to break a stark

wall with the added advantage of providing

light while hiding what is inside.

Many covenants have clauses relating

to the parking of caravans, motorhomes

or boats often requiring these not be on

view, back from the street, and screened

off. The same applies to sheds and other

structures. Even the meter box, heating

systems and solar panels often need to

be out of site from the street.

While plant species may not be

required, height, width and an impression

of plant types are often expected

to be stated, to illustrate the final look.

This is something that a landscape

designer or nursery can provide help

with. The letterbox too may need to be

constructed from materials in line with

those used on the home.

The type of fencing is likely to be stipulated

with any high fences to be back

from the street and not over a certain

height, something that is also reflected

in the Selwyn District Council’s best

practice guidelines.

Take time to read a developer’s covenants

before and after purchasing land.

If you have any concerns talk to your

builder and developer’s representative.

It may save you money and time.

Good design ensures a weatherproof home

The leaky homes crisis of the early

2000s was borne from a relaxation

in building design and emphasis on

self-regulation during the 1980s and

1990s. With a more open interpretation

of building standards some poor designs

crept in.

Official response to the leaky home

crisis has been to tighten up building

by-laws with more thorough building

inspections introduced. The consent

process was upgraded again after the

earthquakes.

Houses are now built to a higher quality

and are generally more structurally

sound than ever before.

Every new home is thoroughly

inspected at significant stages during the

build. These are listed on the consent

document and include checking before

a concrete slab is poured to ensure

foundations (including placement of

reinforcing steel) are prepared as per

their design; that frame and roof fixings,

and all flashings around windows

are in place; and ensuring insulation is

installed.

All tradespeople working on a residential

home must now be under the

responsibility of a licensed building

practitioner and each trade must sign

off the work they do, via the official PS3

documents that the approving Council

requires for building consent.

While Canterbury’s drier climate

translates to less likelihood of a home

developing leaks some buildings have

experienced damage from the elements

over time. It therefore makes sense to

choose a house design which will cope

with extreme weather conditions, while

also looking good in years to come.

In relation to the roof of a home, more

frequently applied are hip, gable and

skillion roofing styles. Hip and gable

roofs with a reasonable overhang of the

soffit, help protect the walls and prevent

water from penetrating between

the cladding and house frames. With

skillion roofing, a pitch of upwards of

10 degrees is a better option as lower

pitches have the potential to be problematic

so require thought and detail in

their design.

Flat or low pitch roofs do need to be

installed correctly so it is best to engage

a professional who has the expertise

and experience for the job. Other issues

with the roof can be internal gutters

which can accumulate rain water if

spouting is blocked causing it to bank

up, pool and potentially penetrate

the roof cavity thereby damaging the

ceiling, walls and other aspects of the

structure.

Fixing snow straps or gutter guard

to the roof spouting will help prevent

buckling should there be a heavy snow

storm, a feature worth installing if

building in Selwyn.

The use of quality cladding and

flashings (a waterproof strip around

windows and doors) is not only peace of

mind but also ensures your home looks

good going forward. All claddings are

now required to be on a cavity system.

This is an air gap between the timber

framing and cladding, usually 20mm or

40mm for brick cladding.

Expert advice on what to do for

your garden this week

VEGETABLES

Hedges can protect vegetable

crops from wind damage but,

because they need regular clipping,

busy gardeners and those

with small patches may prefer to

use windcloth, manuka scrub or

similar.

The ideal shelter hedge is no

more than 1.5m tall. Keep its

base compact by clipping plants

hard from the earliest stages of

growth and keep soil around

them free of weeds.

Lonicera nitida, an evergreen

honeysuckle sometimes sold

as box, is suitable as a closegrowing

shelter hedge with

small-leaved, dense growth.

Propagate from cuttings taken

in autumn and winter. Growing

best on moderate to heavy soils,

it has a root system which does

not travel far into neighbouring

plots.

Golden akeake or akiraho

(Olearia paniculata) and Escallonia

— the pink-flowered form

is best — are other hedge plants

suitable for the vegetable garden.

They can be grown from

cuttings but a head start will be

achieved if plants two or three

years old are used.

Broad beans and globe or

Jerusalem artichokes will give

temporary shelter to protect

tender crops from strong earlysummer

winds.

Jerusalem artichokes, shallots

and garlic are among the few

crops that can be planted in the

open ground at this time of year.

Provided the soil is not frozen or

waterlogged, these hardy plants

do best when planted now, coming

away quickly in early spring.

Rhubarb plants that have been

in the same site for several years

can be broken up with a sharp

spade. Replant pieces in heavily

rows. The old practice was

to apply soot to stimulate the

young plants into growth when

warmer weather returned. The

theory was the blackened soil

surface absorbed more sunlight

warmth than lighter surfaces,

encouraging early growth, but

this is not now recommended.

FLOWERS

Even the smallest section

should have some space for a

shrub or two, perhaps an azalea

or rhododendron, a camellia,

lilac or an evergreen native

shrub.

Identifying a site’s soil condition

will help determine what

will grow best. Transforming

hard clay or a rocky, dry slope

into an area of fertile, friable soil

is hard work but there are attractive

shrubs that will grow in poor

soils.

There are plants to withstand

salt-laden winds and others that

will grow in locations where high

trees, steep slopes or tall buildings

limit direct sunlight.

Avoid digging holes for shrubs

in the middle of an uncultivated

area. Circles of cultivated ground

surrounded by firm soil collect

rainwater. Dig over a larger site

to surround the spot where the

shrub is to grow, covering the soil

later with groundcover plants or

wood chips.

Add compost, well-rotted stable

manure, leaf mould or rotted

straw to the soil. Let this settle for

a few days before planting.

Always consider how wide and

tall the shrub will grow and provide

sufficient space. If planting

several in an area with a main

focal point of view, ensure tall

specimens are at the back and

short ones near the front.

Shrubs suitable for seaside

gardens include rosemary, ngaio

(Myoporum laetum) and lilac.

For lime-free soils, try rhododendrons,

azaleas, Kalmia,

daphne, erica, camellias, Pieris,

magnolia, Gaultheria and

hydrangeas.

For heavy, clay soils, Deutzia,

firethorn (Pyracantha), Spiraea

and Weigela are useful, while

Tamarix and the spindle tree

(Euonymus) are strong enough

for windswept gardens.

Rock rose (Cistus), rosemary

and many South African and

Australian shrubs are suitable

for dry, stony soils, and for shade

or beneath trees, rhododendrons,

Cistus and Viburnum are options.

FRUIT

Blueberries are an antioxidantrich

superfruit (superberry) and

their popularity is increasing

worldwide.

The blueberry is native to the

eastern United States and the

fruit has been eaten by native

Americans for centuries, but

it was not until the early 20th

century that work was undertaken

on developing large-fruited

hybrids.

In New Zealand, efforts started

in about 1979 to breed new cultivars

with an eye to developing an

export market. Blue Magic and

Tasty Blue are among the New

Zealand-bred varieties.

There are three main types of

blueberries: highbush, rabbiteye

(the most heat-tolerant) and

southern highbush.

Blueberries are often unsuccessful

when tried by home

gardeners, mainly because

they will not do well in heavy

clay soils and hate lime. Like

rhododendrons, they prefer

well-drained, damp, peaty soil.

The fruit ripens from mid- to late

summer and the bush need to be

picked over several times as not

all the fruit ripens at once.

winter improvement ideas

While winter invites you to cosy up

indoors, it’s the perfect time to tackle
