from the editor

A sector that continues

to weave the future

The past few months have been particularly

challenging for the global home textile industry. Rising

costs, economic uncertainties, fluctuating consumer

demand, and ongoing geopolitical developments

have caused a difficult business environment for

manufacturers, exporters, and retailers alike. Despite

these challenges, our industry has once again

demonstrated its resilience and ability to adapt.

Last month, we had the pleasure of participating

in HOMETEX Istanbul with our special exhibition

edition of Home Textile Exports. As one of the world’s

most important gatherings for the home textile

industry, HOMETEX once again brought together

manufacturers, buyers, designers, and industry

professionals from across the globe.

The overall atmosphere at the exhibition was

encouraging. During our meetings with numerous

exhibitors and visitors, we observed a renewed sense

of optimism. Many participating companies expressed

satisfaction with the quality of visitors, the volume of

business meetings, and the opportunities generated

during the event. While challenges remain, the fair

clearly demonstrated that the industry is eager to

move forward and reconnect with global markets.

Trade fairs have always played a critical role in revitalizing

business activity, especially during periods of economic

uncertainty. We sincerely hope that the momentum

generated by HOMETEX Istanbul will contribute to

new partnerships, stronger export performance, and

increased commercial activity in the months ahead.

Home textiles represent far more than a manufacturing

sector. After food and healthcare, textile products are

among the most essential needs of modern life. As

long as people continue to build homes, seek comfort,

and improve their living environments, our industry

will remain relevant and necessary. Economic cycles

may bring periods of growth and slowdown, but the

fundamental demand for home textile products will

continue to exist across every market in the world.

What distinguishes our sector is its remarkable ability

to combine functionality, aesthetics, innovation,

and sustainability. Today, home textiles are not only

products of daily use but also reflections of lifestyle,

culture, and consumer expectations. This dynamic

nature ensures that the industry continues to evolve

and offer new opportunities.

As we publish this issue, we remain confident in the

long-term strength of the global home textile market.

Challenges will come and go, markets will rise and

fall, but the innovation, entrepreneurial spirit, and

manufacturing expertise that drive this industry will

continue to shape its future.

On behalf of the Home Textile Exports team, I would like

to thank all the companies, industry professionals, and

readers who continue to support our publication. We look

forward to following the developments that will emerge

from the positive energy generated at HOMETEX and

sharing them with you in the months ahead.

We wish all our readers successful business partnerships,

growing exports, and a prosperous season ahead.

TRENDS

Trends 2027 will equip fairgoers with design insights to navigate the latest trends shaping the industry,

across three directions: RE-DECORATE, RE-CONNECT, and RE-USE. (Photo: Messe Frankfurt)

Intertextile Shanghai Home Textiles Autumn Edition 2026 will spotlight forward-looking

design directions and evolving consumer demand, as the global home and lifestyle market

continues to adapt to sustainability priorities, emotional well-being, and diversified living

spaces. Taking place from 18 – 20 August 2026 at the National Exhibition and Convention

Canter (Shanghai), the fair will present its latest trend theme, ‘BREATHE UP!’, developed

in collaboration with leading international trend forecaster NellyRodi Agency, alongside

expanded product categories, and the debut of the Home Textiles Lifestyle Zone.

SHANGHAI – Amid a shifting market

landscape shaped by greener consumption

policies in China, the rise of home-centric

lifestyles, and growing demand for multifunctional

and emotionally resonant interiors,

the fair serves as a key platform for trendled

sourcing, cross-sector collaboration, and

business exchange. These developments will

be reflected across four halls, from curated

displays to exhibitor showcases aligned with

emerging consumer preferences.

Guided by NellyRodi Agency, the 2027 trend

directions are developed by a committee

including the agency’s Founder and

Trendsetter Ms Nelly Rodi, Global Creative

Director Ms Cécile Rosenstrauch, and Founder

and Design Director of the Interior Architects

Design Mr Shen Lei. At the fair, the concept

‘BREATHE UP!’ will be brought to life through a

dedicated trend area featuring curated spaces

and immersive installations, offering visitors a

preview of the season’s key directions.

‘BREATHE UP!’ reflects a renewed search

for balance and vitality in an increasingly

complex world. Inspired by the rhythm of

breathing, the theme explores how design

can restore emotional well-being, reconnect

individuals with their surroundings, and open

new creative possibilities at home. It captures

a shift from purely functional living spaces

towards environments that nurture both body

and mind, a transition that will be echoed in

product innovations presented onsite.

The concept unfolds through three key

textile directions. RE-DECORATE celebrates

expressive interiors, where bold aesthetics,

rich textures, and artisanal craftsmanship

transform the home into a stage for

individuality and creativity. RE-CONNECT

embraces a softer, more mindful approach,

combining pared-back design with intelligent

functionality to generate calm, restorative

spaces. RE-USE highlights circular thinking,

encouraging experimentation with recycled

materials and innovative processes to redefine

sustainability as both practical and aesthetic.

New zone and offerings reflect lifestyle

convergence, emerging demand

In response to the continued expansion

of lifestyle-driven consumption, and the

growing desire for more holistic, well-beingoriented

living environments, the fair will also

introduce the Home Textiles Lifestyle Zone,

bringing together complementary categories

such as carpets, wallpapers, aromatherapy,

and home accessories. Featuring highlighted

exhibitors such as Simple Home and Zhejiang

Nine home Co Ltd, this new zone reflects the

growing integration between home textiles

and broader lifestyle products, as consumers

increasingly seek cohesive, experience-led

living environments. It also broadens the

show’s offering, providing visitors with a more

comprehensive resource across core home

textiles and a wider range of home products.

Meanwhile, the fair will expand its commerce

product scope, tapping into a fast-growing

segment in consumer market and reflecting

the increasing integration of digital shopping

experiences into everyday lifestyles. With

the growing adoption of e-commerce

platforms and digital retail tools in brand

strategies, this addition aims to help

exhibitors capture emerging opportunities

and reach new customer groups.

Aligned with China’s policy direction

towards sustainable development, green

consumption, and commercial refurbishment,

the fair will further spotlight exhibitors

specialising in contract business and ecofriendly

innovations, helping to meet rising

demand for low-carbon, wellness-oriented,

and future-ready living spaces. These better

positions the fair to connect exhibitors with

buyers in the hospitality, contract, and

public sectors seeking practical solutions

that support sustainable operations and the

ongoing upgrading of built environments.

As part of the Transforming

the panel titled “Resilience

in Global Competition: The New

Roadmap for Exports” held

Moderated by Vahap Munyar, General

Coordinator of Ekonomi Gazetesi, the panel

brought together Türkiye’s leading CEOs and

prominent business leaders. During the session,

our Chairman Osman Uğurlu emphasized

that the transformation taking place in global

trade has completely reshaped the competitive

landscape in the textile and apparel industry,

making the following remarks:

“The supply chain disruptions experienced

after the pandemic, geopolitical tensions,

rising energy costs, and changing trade

policies have ushered in a new era in global

countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh,

and Vietnam solely on the basis of low labor

costs. We cannot play the game by their

rules. Türkiye’s path should not be price

competition, but value competition.

While the EU’s textile and apparel imports

increased by 10.9% in 2025, Türkiye’s textile

and apparel exports to the EU declined by

11.7%. This clearly indicates that the core

issue is not shrinking demand in Europe, but

rather the erosion of competitiveness and

loss of market share.

For this reason, we need to carefully redesign

our export roadmap. A transformation

trade. It is no longer enough to produce highquality

goods at competitive prices alone. In

the EU, practices such as the Green Deal, the

Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, and

the Digital Product Passport are redefining

the rules of exports, while in the United States,

protectionist trade policies are having a

similar impact. Therefore, we must accurately

interpret the transformation in global trade

and determine our direction accordingly.”

EXPORTER’S NEW COMPETITIVE PASSPORT

“Sustainability practices are no longer

merely an environmental preference; they

are becoming a prerequisite for market

It is clear that, in the short term, this

process increases costs and operational

burdens for our companies. However, in

the medium and long term, a sustainable

production model will provide exporters

with a substantial competitive advantage.

“Today, major brands such as the Inditex

Group and H&M are setting targets for 100%

recycled and circular production. It will be

inevitable for countries that fail to adapt

to this transformation to fall behind in the

global market.”

A TRACEABILITY STEP IN THE GLOBAL

JOURNEY OF TURKISH TOWELS

“Under our Turkish Towels brand initiative,

which we launched with the vision of

promoting the deep-rooted heritage and

manufacturing strength of Turkish towels

more powerfully to the world, we signed a

cooperation agreement with ETKO to establish

a traceability and certification infrastructure.

Through this project, we aim for the

Turkish Towels brand to become not

only an indication of origin, but also an

internationally recognized, verifiable, and

sustainable quality standard.

Today, producing high-quality products

alone is no longer sufficient in the global

market. The raw materials used, the

production processes involved, the

environmental impact, and compliance

with sustainability criteria are now just

as important as the product itself. In the

language of tomorrow’s trade, traceability is

becoming one of the most critical elements

of trust and competitiveness.

With the standards we are establishing, we

aim first to strengthen the value of the Turkish

Towels brand in the U.S. market and, in the

following stages, worldwide, while positioning

Denizli’s high-quality production capabilities

even more strongly on the global stage.”

FDI to Be Held Under the Motto

“Where Design Leads”,

Shaping the Future of Design

Furnishings & Design Istanbul (FDI), the global meeting point

for the furniture and interior design ecosystem, will open its doors

for the third time on 24–26 September 2026. Organized

this year under the motto “Where Design Leads,” the exhibition

will bring together design vision, a curated platform structure,

a high-quality business network, and global visibility under one roof.

Positioning design not merely as an aesthetic

element but as a driving force that shapes

the industry, FDI aims to connect Türkiye’s

growing manufacturing and design

capabilities with the international trade

ecosystem. Having welcomed more than 100

brands and over 26,000 visitors from 38

countries at its previous edition, the exhibition

is preparing once again to become one of

the most important gathering points for the

global design community.

Bringing together the competitive

manufacturing strength of the Turkish

furniture and interior design industry

with a strong design vision, Furnishings &

Design Istanbul (FDI) continues to stand

out as a platform that contributes to the

transformation of the sector. Organized by

the Federation of Furniture Associations

(MOSFED) at the Istanbul Expo Center from

lead. This approach, which gives meaning to

spaces, strengthens brand identities while

also enabling differentiation.

At FDI, not only products are exhibited; ideas

are discussed, brands are positioned, new

collaborations are established, and market

dynamics are reshaped. In line with this

vision, we have structured our exhibition

around five strategic pillars: a qualified

brand ecosystem, thought leadership in

design, collaboration and connectivity,

regional reference, and global visibility.”

Shape Under the FDI Roof

Aiming to connect Türkiye’s design and

production capabilities with leading buyers

from the global trade network, the exhibition

will once again highlight the defining role of

design in the industry under this year’s motto,

“Where Design Leads.”

In addition to product display areas featuring

design-driven collections, the exhibition will

showcase FDI Stage & Talks, the Designer-to-

Business (D2B) Program, Design Circle, New

Horizon, the FDI Lounge, as well as exhibition

and installation spaces. These multi-layered

experience zones will provide brands with

powerful opportunities to tell their stories

through diverse, design-focused formats.

FDI Istanbul 2026 Built Around Five

Strategic Design Pillars

Stating that FDI Istanbul has evolved

beyond the traditional trade fair model into

a multi-dimensional platform where design

shapes the future, MOSFED Chairman

Ahmet Güleç commented on this year’s

motto, “Where Design Leads”:

“We believe that design is not merely a

language of form, but also a culture of living,

a way of thinking, and a strategic approach.

Within this framework, the FDI Stage &

Talks program will host leading speakers

from Türkiye and around the world, with

sessions focusing on design, creative

economies, sustainability, digitalization,

and industry transformation. Over the

course of three days, topics such as better

production, stronger marketing models, nextgeneration

collaborations, and the future of

networking culture will be explored from a

multidimensional perspective.

EVENTS

As a result, FDI will go beyond commercial

interaction to become a powerful

knowledge platform that fosters intellectual

production and industry dialogue.

The Designer-to-Business (D2B) Program,

which brings designers and manufacturers

together through meaningful collaborations,

will pave the way for new partnerships.

Meanwhile, the New Horizon Exhibition will

provide visibility for independent designers

and next-generation creative ideas.

The Design Circle, organized each year

around a different theme, will highlight the

multi-layered nature of design through its

curatorial approach and spatial experience.

Special exhibitions and installation areas will

further strengthen the cultural and intellectual

dimension of FDI Istanbul, presenting selected

brands, projects, and design narratives that

explore the relationship between design and

art from fresh perspectives.

The FDI Lounge, positioned at the intersection

of all these structures, will serve as a dedicated

meeting space that fosters communication

among stakeholders, encourages idea

exchange, and supports natural interaction.

The Selective Intelligence Behind FDI: The

Design Committee

One of the strongest pillars of FDI Istanbul is

its Design Committee, composed of respected

professionals from various disciplines.

Responsible for shaping the exhibition’s

curatorial framework, content direction, and

alignment with the “Where Design Leads”

vision, the committee transforms the event

into a highly qualified industry gathering with

strong program coherence.

Chaired by Alpay Er, academician and industrial

designer, the Design Committee consists of:

• Ahmet Raşit Karaaslan –

Interior Architect and Designer

• Aynur Yılmaz – Architect

• Cem Cemal Çobanoğlu –

Senior Interior Architect

• Cengiz Ayyıldız – Strategic Content Consultant

• Ece Yalım –

Industrial Designer and Interior Architect

• Erdem Akan –

Designer, Curator, and Educator

• Şule Koç – Industrial Designer

Together, the committee plays a key role in

ensuring that FDI Istanbul continues to serve

as a distinguished platform where design

leadership, innovation, and global industry

dialogue converge.

Architect Ahu Akın’s

“Homes

with Stories”

manifesto

Transform the old, build the soul:

Meaning, sustainability,

and personal touches take center

stage in 2026 decoration trends.

As the home furnishing season begins,

conventional rules in the world of decoration

are being rewritten. Perfect showroom

aesthetics are giving way to spaces that

feel lived-in, tell a story, and establish an

HTE HOME TEXTILE EXPORTS

emotional connection with their users.

Architect Ahu Akın summarizes today’s

interior design philosophy in one sentence:

“What makes a home beautiful

is not the furniture, but the meaning

it generates.”

According to Akın, design is not merely an

aesthetic composition; it is the process of

developing a story that brings together

the past, present, and future within the

same space. In particular, transforming and

reusing old furniture and objects lies at the

heart of both sustainability and the new

understanding of luxury.

Modern Homes No Longer Seek Perfection,

but Character

One of the most striking shifts in today’s

homes is the move away from “perfect yet

soulless” spaces. Akın notes that homes filled

entirely with brand-new, flawless pieces

may initially appear impressive, but over

time they can generate a monotonous and

distant atmosphere. In contrast, objects with

a history bring depth to a space through their

marks, textures, and small imperfections.

HTE HOME TEXTILE EXPORTS

JUNE 2026

TRENDS 43

When combined with modern lines, they

generate a balanced yet powerful ambiance.

The home is no longer a showroom — it is a

personal storytelling space. People now seek

meaning rather than ostentation.

Is Every Old Object Truly Valuable?

Not every old item is a decorative treasure.

Akın explains whether an object is worth

transforming through three key criteria:

Form:

The Skeleton of Design

Pieces with balanced proportions, strong

lines, and timeless aesthetics are always

open to transformation. Weak form limits

every intervention made to the object.

Material:

The Determiner of Quality

Solid wood, fine craftsmanship, and highquality

surfaces increase both durability and

the success of transformation.

Memory:

The Emotional Power of a Space

Sometimes, even a technically imperfect

piece can become the strongest element of a

space because of the story it carries.

HTE HOME TEXTILE EXPORTS

JUNE 2026

44

TRENDS

In short:

“Form determines feasibility,

while memory determines value.”

From Sustainability

to the New Understanding of Luxury:

Upcycling Is on the Rise

Architect Ahu Akın states that sustainability in

decoration is no longer a trend, but a necessity.

Transforming old furniture and objects:

• Consumes less energy compared

to new production,

• Reduces carbon footprint,

• And significantly lowers costs.

However, the real shift lies in perception:

today’s luxury is no longer defined by

“new and expensive,” but by being original,

sustainable, and story-driven.

Ahu Akın’s approach highlights the beginning

of a new era in decoration: homes must now

be not only aesthetic, but also emotional,

sustainable, and personal. And perhaps the

most important statement is this:

“The soul of a space is shaped

by the stories of the objects within it.”

A structural shift is now essential

for Türkiye’s textile industry

Rising cost pressures, a widening

sustainably, it must establish a

productivity- and technologydriven

structure without delay.

Root causes of contraction in Türkiye

Over the past two years, both labor and

energy unit costs have increased significantly.

Financial expenses and exchange-rate

volatility further complicate capacity planning

for manufacturers.

• Labor costs are now higher than in many

competing countries.

• Energy expenses account for up to 12–35%

of total product cost.

• Price-based competition is no longer

sustainable in low value-added product groups.

Education and talent gap

The current workforce’s training level and

its ability to adapt to modern production

processes remain limited. While many

employees can manage routine tasks, futureoriented

skills in efficiency, digitalization,

and technology are insufficient. At the topmanagement

level, resistance to change and

a tendency to protect the status quo are

widespread. Talented employees often leave

due to mobbing, performance pressure, or lack

of upward mobility. This restricts organizational

learning, weakens innovation capacity, and

makes it difficult to implement productivityenhancing

technologies effectively.

This landscape clearly shows that Türkiye

must shift from a price-driven competition

model to one built on productivity +

technology + human capital.

How global manufacturers are managing

this challenge

• Expanding automation and digital

monitoring across production lines.

• Rapidly deploying renewable-energy

investments.

• Stabilizing costs through state-supported

energy tariffs and carbon-reduction

programs.

Digitalization ushers

in a new era

in textile machinery

Digitalization is increasingly shaping new investments

in textile machinery, driving higher efficiency, lowering operational

costs and supporting more sustainable production models.

As the textile industry enters 2026, digital

transformation is accelerating across

production infrastructures. In Türkiye,

recent machinery investments are shifting

strongly toward automation, data-driven

management and solutions compatible with

Industry 4.0. Companies aiming to boost

competitiveness while keeping costs under

control are prioritizing machines integrated

with digital technologies. This trend has

become an essential strategy particularly for

manufacturers with a strong export orientation.

A growing focus on efficiency-driven

production

Rising labor costs and global competitive

pressure are pushing producers toward

machinery and production lines that can

deliver higher output with fewer resources.

Thanks to new-generation digital systems,

production lines can now be monitored in real

time, with automated fault detection, energy

optimization and maintenance planning all

managed from a single control point. This

approach not only increases efficiency but

also significantly reduces the cost impact of

production errors. Industry experts note that

smart sensors used especially in dyeing and

finishing lines have notably reduced water

and energy consumption.

Sustainable machine technologies

The rapid adoption of intelligent optical inspection systems is transforming

how mills reduce waste and enhance fabric consistency.

Textile manufacturers across Europe and

Asia are rapidly adopting AI-supported

optical control systems that help detect

weaving defects, color deviations and pattern

irregularities in real time. The shift gained

momentum throughout 2025 as companies

increasingly prioritized efficiency and

sustainable resource use.

Growing demand for precise monitoring

AI-supported inspection units integrate

seamlessly with modern looms and

knitting machines, allowing teams to track

irregularities instantly. Engineers report

that these systems help reduce fabric waste

and minimize manual re-checking. Many

mills have already linked their inspection

data with planning software to streamline

daily production decisions.

Machine builders also introduced new sensor

modules capable of identifying filament breaks,

needle wear and subtle tension changes. These

tools support teams in preventing unexpected

downtime and keeping fabric output consistent

throughout long production runs.

Investments driven by global competition

Producers in Türkiye, Italy, India and

Vietnam intensified their investments this

year as global competition grew stronger.

Executives emphasize that intelligent quality
