A NOTE
A NOTE
from the editor
from the editor
Welcome to our July/August
issue.
Summer is in full swing, with
gardens in bloom, long days to
enjoy and plenty of opportunities
to make the most of life close
to home. Inside, you’ll find
inspiration for the season ahead,
from local events and days out
to summer recipes, home ideas
and more.
Before that, however, we want to
pay tribute to someone who has
been a much-valued part of our
magazines for almost a decade.
We were deeply saddened to
hear of the death of our garden
expert, Matthew Biggs VMH,
who passed away in May at the
age of 65. For many readers,
Matthew’s gardening column
was a familiar and trusted
feature, offering practical advice,
seasonal wisdom and an
infectious enthusiasm for plants.
Best known for his appearances
on Gardeners’ Question
Time, Matthew combined
vast horticultural knowledge
with warmth and humour. A
professional gardener for more
than 25 years, he studied at
Pershore College of Agriculture
and the Royal Botanic Gardens,
Kew, before going on to write
many books and become one
of Britain’s most respected
gardening voices.
Recently awarded the Victoria
Medal of Honour, one of
horticulture’s highest accolades,
Matthew was also admired
for his determination during
his battle with bowel cancer,
including his work helping to
create a therapeutic garden at
Mount Vernon Hospital.
We are enormously grateful
for Matthew’s contribution to
this magazine. His columns
encouraged readers to embrace
the seasons and appreciate the
natural world. He will be greatly
missed, and our thoughts are
with his family, friends and the
many gardeners he inspired.

WHY SUMMER
HOLIDAY CAMPS ARE
A WIN FOR CHILDREN
AND PARENTS ALIKE
For many families, the arrival
of the summer holidays brings
a mixture of excitement and
apprehension...
While children eagerly anticipate six weeks free from the
classroom, parents are often left juggling work commitments,
childcare arrangements and the challenge of keeping young
minds entertained. It’s no surprise that summer holiday camps
have become an increasingly popular solution, offering benefits
that extend far beyond simply filling the school break.
At their core, holiday camps provide children with the
opportunity to learn, explore and grow in an environment that
feels fun and engaging. Unlike the structured nature of the
school day, camps allow children to develop skills through
hands-on experiences, creative activities and social interaction.
Whether they’re participating in sports, arts and crafts, outdoor
adventures, science workshops or team challenges, children are
constantly being encouraged to try new things and step outside
their comfort zones.
One of the greatest advantages of holiday camps is the
chance for children to build confidence and independence.
Being away from their usual routines allows them to make
decisions, solve problems and develop resilience in a safe
and supportive setting. Children often discover talents they
never knew they had, form new friendships and gain a sense
of achievement from tackling activities that may initially have
seemed daunting.
Social development is another key benefit. In an age where
screen time can easily dominate school holidays, camps offer
invaluable face-to-face interaction. Children learn how to
communicate, cooperate and work as part of a team, skills that
will benefit them throughout their lives. Meeting new people
from different schools and backgrounds can also broaden their
horizons and help them develop greater confidence in social
situations.
For parents, holiday camps provide much-needed peace of
mind. Knowing that children are spending their days in a safe,
supervised and stimulating environment can significantly reduce
the stress that often accompanies the summer break. Reputable
camps are staffed by experienced professionals who are
trained to create positive experiences while ensuring children’s
wellbeing remains a top priority.
Perhaps one of the most overlooked benefits of holiday
camps is the relief they can bring from parental guilt. Many
working parents find themselves torn between professional
responsibilities and the desire to create memorable summer
experiences for their children. It’s easy to feel pressure to fill
every day with activities, outings and entertainment, particularly
when social media often presents an unrealistic picture of
family life.
“IN AN AGE WHERE SCREEN
TIME CAN EASILY DOMINATE
SCHOOL HOLIDAYS, CAMPS
OFFER INVALUABLE FACE-TO-
FACE INTERACTION.”
Holiday camps can help alleviate that burden. Rather than
worrying that children are spending long days indoors or
becoming bored, parents can feel reassured that their children
are actively engaged, learning new skills and making lasting
memories. In many cases, children return home eager to share
stories of adventures, friendships and achievements, often
having had experiences that parents simply wouldn’t have been
able to recreate on their own.
Importantly, holiday camps also provide structure during a
period that can otherwise become overly sedentary. Regular
activity, social engagement and mental stimulation can help
children maintain healthy routines throughout the summer
months and ease the transition back into school when
September arrives.
As families continue to balance increasingly busy lives, summer
holiday camps offer a practical and enriching solution. They
provide children with opportunities to grow, learn and have fun,
while giving parents confidence that their children are spending
their time productively and safely. Far from being just a childcare
option, today’s holiday camps are valuable experiences that
support development, encourage independence and create
memories that can last a lifetime.
For many families, that’s a summer investment well worth
making.

BBQ SHAWARMA
SPICED KING
OYSTER
MUSHROOMS
Plant-based BBQ perfection: spicy King Oyster
mushroom shawarma, charred over hot coals
and served with flatbreads, hummus, pickled
cucumbers and jalapeños for a fiery summer
feast. Serves 4.
Prep time: 10 mins (plus 30 mins to marinate)
Cooking time: 10 mins
INGREDIENTS:
500g King Oyster mushrooms
2 tsp smoked paprika
½ tsp chilli powder
1 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp ground turmeric
2 tsp ground cumin
½ tsp ground black pepper
½ tsp salt
2 tbsp olive oil
2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
2 garlic cloves, unpeeled
2-3 red chillies
To serve:
½ large cucumber, thinly sliced
1 tsp sumac
1 tsp salt
Juice of ½ lemon
1 small bunch flat leaf parsley, finely chopped
4 large flatbreads
Hummus or Greek yoghurt
Pickled jalapeño peppers
METHOD:
A cast iron skillet is ideal for BBQ cooking
because it holds and distributes heat evenly,
helping the mushrooms cook in their juices while
developing soft centres and charred edges.
Toast the dry spices in the skillet for 2–3
minutes until fragrant, then mix with salt, olive
oil and crushed garlic. Halve the mushrooms
lengthways, score the cut sides, coat in the
spice mixture and marinate for at least 30
minutes.
For the pickled cucumber, mix cucumber with
sumac, salt, lemon juice and parsley, then
set aside. Return the skillet to the BBQ with
a little olive oil, garlic and chillies. Cook the
mushrooms cut side down for 4–5 minutes until
golden and charred, turning halfway.
Warm the flatbreads on the BBQ, spread
with hummus or Greek yoghurt, then top with
mushrooms, pickled cucumber, jalapeños and
chilli if using.

BBQ SLOW COOKED
BUTTERFLIED LEG
OF LAMB
Slow cooked over coals until meltingly tender,
this is the ultimate method to cook a timeless
classic. Marinate the shoulder of lamb
overnight with anchovies, garlic and rosemary
to enhance the sweet flavour. Serves 4-6.
Prep time: 15 minutes (plus overnight
marinating)
Cooking time: 2-2 ½ hours (approximately)
INGREDIENTS:
2kg shoulder of lamb, deboned and
butterflied
2 tbsp olive oil
6 anchovy fillets
3 garlic cloves, peeled and cut in slivers
1 large bunch of rosemary
Black pepper
2 tbsp runny honey
50 ml dry sherry (optional)
You will need a large cast iron skillet and a
BBQ with a lid.
METHOD:
Using a small sharp knife, make deep incisions
in the lamb surface.
Place the olive oil and anchovy fillets in a small
food processor and blitz to make a paste.
Place the lamb shoulder in a shallow dish and
rub with the paste. Insert the rosemary and
garlic into the incisions. Add black pepper,
drizzle over the honey and sherry and cover.
Place in the fridge to marinate overnight.
The following day, remove the lamb from the
fridge two hours before you’re ready to cook,
to reach room temperature.
Preheat the BBQ. You will need plenty of coals
to maintain the heat over a couple of hours.
Place the skillet on the BBQ and preheat for
10 minutes.
Add the lamb to the skillet and close the
lid. Cook for approximately 2 to 2 ½ hours
or until the lamb is tender. The meat when
probed with a meat thermometer should reach
80°C-85°C.
Open the lid and cook for approximately
10 minutes until the surface of the meat
caramelises. Remove from the heat, cover and
rest for at least ½ hour. To serve, simply pull
apart with two forks and spoon over any juices.

GRIDDLED
AUBERGINES
Chargrilling aubergine adds
a smoky flavour that, when
paired with the sharp tang of
sumac, creates a perfect blend
that can be complemented
with salty, creamy whipped
feta. Sumac is a spice used
in Middle Eastern cuisine that
adds a lemony taste. Adding
pomegranate seeds injects an
extra twist of tart sweetness
that further enhances the dish.
Serves 4 as a starter.
Prep time: 5 mins
Cooking time: 10 mins
INGREDIENTS:
2 large aubergines, cut into
quarters lengthwise
2 tbsp olive oil
Sea salt
3 tsp Sumac
1 small bunch fresh mint,
leaves picked
Pomegranate seeds
To serve
Whipped feta and chilli oil
(optional)
Warm flatbreads
METHOD:
Brush the aubergines with oil
and season with salt. Sprinkle
liberally with sumac.
Cook directly on the hot BBQ
grill, or in a smoking-hot griddle
pan, for 3–4 minutes on each
side until charred, golden and
soft. If cooking over the BBQ,
keep the slices fairly thick so
they hold their shape, and
brush with a little extra oil if
needed.
To make the whipped feta,
place 200g feta, 150g Greek
yoghurt and 2 tbsp extra
virgin olive oil in a small food
processor. Blend until smooth
and creamy.
Serve the charred aubergine
with whipped feta, warm
flatbreads, fresh mint,
pomegranate seeds and a
drizzle of chilli oil.

Adding Space the Easy Way
WHY A CONSERVATORY COULD
TRANSFORM YOUR HOME
For many homeowners, the need for extra space often comes with a big
question: move house, extend, or rethink the space you already have?
One of the simplest and most effective
ways to create additional living
space is by adding a conservatory.
Offering a practical, stylish and often
surprisingly straightforward solution,
a conservatory can transform the
way you use your home without the
disruption of a major extension.
A conservatory instantly creates
valuable extra room that can be
adapted to suit your lifestyle. Whether
you dream of a bright and airy dining
area, a peaceful home office, a
playroom for growing families or simply
a relaxing space to enjoy the garden all
year round, it offers flexibility that can
evolve with your needs.
One of the biggest advantages is how
quickly and easily a conservatory
can often be installed compared to
traditional building work. Modern
designs are far more advanced than
many people realise, with improved
insulation, energy-efficient glazing
and stylish finishes that allow the new
space to feel like a seamless extension
of your home.
Many homeowners are surprised to
discover that adding a conservatory
can be a relatively stress-free process.
With expert design guidance, tailored
options and professional installation,
it is often far less disruptive than a
full extension project. Depending
on the style and specification, many
conservatories can be completed in a
matter of weeks.
A conservatory also offers excellent
value for money. Not only does it
create more usable living space, but
it can also enhance the overall appeal
and potential value of your property.
In today’s market, versatile, light-filled
living areas are highly sought after by
buyers.
Summer is the perfect time to consider
adding one. With longer days and more
opportunities to enjoy your outdoor
surroundings, a conservatory creates
that perfect connection between
inside and out — allowing you to
enjoy natural light and garden views
whatever the weather.
If you’ve been wishing for more
room but don’t want the upheaval of
moving house or undertaking a major
renovation, a conservatory could be
the simple, stylish answer. Sometimes,
creating more space is easier than you
think.

FINISHING TOUCHES:
The Details That Make a Home
Not every home transformation
begins with building work, new
layouts or major investment. Often,
it is the smaller details — the
carefully chosen light fitting, the
fabric that softens a room, the
mirror that changes the sense of
space — that make a home feel
truly finished.
Finishing touches bring comfort,
character and cohesion. They are
the layers that turn a practical
space into somewhere warm,
welcoming and personal.
LIGHTING THE
WAY
Lighting has one of the biggest
impacts on the atmosphere of a
home. A room can feel entirely
different depending on how it is lit,
from bright and practical during
the day to soft and inviting in the
evening.
Rather than relying on one central
light, consider layers. Table
lamps, wall lights, pendants and
carefully placed floor lamps can
all help create depth and warmth.
In kitchens and bathrooms, task
lighting is essential, while in living
rooms
and
bedrooms,
softer lighting can
instantly make a space
feel more relaxed.
THE POWER OF
PAINT
Colour is one of the easiest ways
to update a home without changing
everything. Earthy browns,
terracottas and deep chocolate
tones add instant depth, especially
alongside timber floors and layered
textiles. Restorative greens, from
smoky jade to rich teal, bring an
organic calm, while buttery yellows
add gentle joy and optimism. For
something bolder, deep reds, wines
and plums create a more dramatic,
elevated feel, while warm off-whites
offer a soft, comforting base for
brass accents, pale woods and
natural textures.
SOFTNESS,
TEXTURE AND
COMFORT
Soft furnishings are where a home
begins to feel lived in. Cushions,
throws, curtains, rugs and
upholstery all introduce texture,
colour and comfort, helping to
soften harder surfaces and
bring a scheme together.
A new rug can define a
seating area, curtains can
make a room feel taller and
warmer, and cushions can
add personality in a way
that is easy to update over
time.
CHARACTER IN
THE DETAILS
The most memorable homes are
rarely the most perfect. They are
the ones with character: artwork
collected over time, books on
shelves, ceramics, candles, flowers,
family pieces and objects that tell
a story.
Accessories should feel considered
rather than cluttered. Grouping items
in odd numbers, varying height and
texture, and leaving space around
favourite pieces can help a room feel
styled without being overdone.
BRINGING IT ALL
TOGETHER
The key to successful finishing
touches is cohesion. Colours do
not have to match exactly, but
they should speak to one another.
Materials, tones and textures should
flow gently from room to room,
creating a sense of ease throughout
the home.
Sometimes, it is not about changing
everything — it is about choosing
the details that make a house feel
unmistakably like home.

best kitchens balance beautiful
design with everyday function,
creating a space that works just as
well for a relaxed family breakfast
as it does for a summer dinner with
friends.
INDOOR-OUTDOOR
LIVING
When the weather is kind, the
garden becomes another room.
Sliding or bi-fold doors, sheltered
terraces, outdoor kitchens, dining
sets and comfortable seating areas
can completely change the way
a home is enjoyed through the
warmer months.
Even small updates can have a big
impact. Planters, lighting, cushions,
shade and a defined dining area
can make an outdoor space feel
inviting and considered, without
losing that relaxed summer feeling.
SETTING THE
SCENE
Entertaining well does not have to
mean making everything formal.
Often, it is the little details that
make guests feel welcome: a
beautifully laid table, fresh flowers,
comfortable chairs, warm lighting,
chilled drinks and somewhere easy
for people to gather.
Practical touches matter too. Think
about shade in the day, warmth as
evening falls, and enough lighting
to carry the atmosphere after
sunset. Firepits, lanterns, parasols,
throws and outdoor heaters can
all help make the most of those
long summer evenings and festoon

STYLE THAT LASTS
A home designed for entertaining
should still feel personal and
liveable. Rather than chasing
trends, focus on quality pieces,
thoughtful design and spaces that
suit the way you actually live.
Whether it is a new kitchen, an
improved garden layout, stylish
furniture, specialist glazing, interior
accessories or expert advice on
finishing touches, local businesses
can help create spaces that feel
welcoming all year round.
This summer, The Art of
Entertaining is about making
hosting feel effortless —
and making the most of the
home, garden and people
around you.

NOTES FROM THE
Garden
Keep your garden glowing
through summer...
July and August can be glorious months in the garden,
but they can also be challenging. Long dry spells, intense
sunshine and time away on holiday can quickly leave pots,
lawns and borders looking tired. A little preparation, however,
can help keep outdoor spaces healthy, colourful and easy to
enjoy.
Watering well is the first step. Rather than giving plants a
light sprinkle every day, water deeply and less often, ideally
early in the morning or later in the evening. This encourages
roots to grow down into the soil and reduces water lost
through evaporation. Pots, hanging baskets and newly
planted shrubs will need the most attention, as they dry out
far more quickly than established borders.
Mulching is one of the simplest ways to protect plants in
summer. A layer of compost, bark or gravel around the base
of plants helps lock in moisture, suppress weeds and keep
roots cooler during hot weather.
Deadheading is another quick job with big rewards.
Removing faded flowers from roses, dahlias, cosmos,
geraniums and bedding plants encourages new blooms and
keeps displays looking fresh for longer. Regular feeding,
particularly for plants in containers, will also help maintain
colour into late summer.
Before going away, group pots together in a lightly shaded
spot and water thoroughly. Consider using water-retaining
gel, saucers or a simple drip irrigation system if you will be
away for more than a few days.
Finally, do not be too quick to cut everything back.
Seedheads, grasses and late-flowering perennials can add
structure, support wildlife and carry the garden beautifully
into autumn.

LIVING
WELL
WITH
DEMENTIA
ADVERTISING FEATURE
A diagnosis of
dementia can feel
overwhelming - not
only for the person
affected, but for the
family and friends
around them.
It often brings difficult questions about
independence, safety, future care and
quality of life. Yet while dementia is
a life-changing condition, it does not
mean life stops being meaningful,
active or connected.
Across the UK, more families are
now looking for care and support
that goes beyond simply managing
symptoms. The focus is increasingly
on helping people live well: maintaining
familiar routines, preserving dignity,
encouraging social connection and
offering reassurance to loved ones who
may be navigating care decisions for
the first time.
Dementia affects people in different
ways. Some may experience memory
loss, confusion or difficulty finding
words, while others may notice
changes in mood, confidence or
behaviour. Because the condition can
progress gradually, families often find
themselves adapting step by step —
perhaps beginning with extra help at
home, before later considering more
structured care.
For many people, remaining in their
own home for as long as possible is an
important priority. Care at home services
can make this possible by providing
practical help with daily routines, such
as washing, dressing, meals, medication
reminders, light household tasks and
transport to appointments. They can
also offer companionship, which is
especially important for those at risk of
becoming isolated.
But good care at home is about far
more than ticking off a list of tasks.
For someone living with dementia, a
familiar face, a calm approach and
an understanding of their life story
can make a significant difference.
Carers who take time to learn about
someone’s routines, preferences, past
experiences and anxieties are often
better able to reduce distress and
encourage confidence.
As needs increase, specialist
care homes can offer a safe and
supportive environment designed
around the realities of dementia.
Many now provide dedicated
dementia communities, with staff
trained to understand memory loss,
communication difficulties and the
emotional impact of the condition.
The best settings combine safety with
warmth — creating spaces that feel
homely rather than clinical, with clear
layouts, secure gardens, meaningful
activities and quiet areas for relaxation.
Activities play an important role in
dementia care. Music, gardening,
gentle exercise, baking, art,
reminiscence sessions and visits from
local groups can all help stimulate
memory, lift mood and create moments
of joy. Even when someone struggles
to remember recent events, they may
still respond strongly to music from
their younger years, familiar scents,
photographs or simple shared routines.
Retirement communities can also
offer valuable support, particularly
“Good care is not
simply practical;
it is personal.”
for couples or individuals who want
independence with reassurance close
at hand. Some provide flexible care
packages that can adapt over time,
allowing residents to enjoy their own
private space while benefiting from
social activities, communal dining,
wellbeing services and access to help
when needed.
For relatives, making care decisions
can be emotionally difficult. Feelings
of guilt, worry and uncertainty are
common, especially when deciding
whether a loved one needs more help
than the family can provide alone.
Seeking advice early can make the
process less daunting. Speaking to
care providers, dementia specialists,
GPs, local support groups or charities
can help families understand the
options available and plan ahead
rather than waiting for a crisis.
Living well with dementia is about
recognising the person behind
the diagnosis — their memories,
relationships, tastes, humour and
individuality. With the right support,
people can continue to experience
comfort, companionship and purpose,
while families feel less alone in the
journey.

Staying Independent, Living
Comfortably
Promotional Partnership
Home is so much more than four walls. It’s where memories
are made, families gather, and life’s everyday moments unfold.
For many people, the thought of leaving
a much-loved home due to mobility
challenges can be difficult. Fortunately,
modern accessibility solutions are helping
homeowners remain independent,
comfortable, and confident in the place their
own home.
When people think of home adaptations,
they often imagine having to compromise
on style or settle for installing equipment
that feels clinical and out of place. However,
we don’t think this is right. That’s why at
Taylor-Made Mobility, we specialise in home
adaptations and mobility solutions designed
with both practicality and aesthetics in
mind. These new features blend seamlessly
into the home while providing the support
needed to maintain an active and
independent lifestyle.
Whether it’s a discreet stairlift, a throughfloor
lift, a walk-in shower, or a sophisticated
wet room, all our accessibility solutions are
bespoke. Our modern adaptations can be
tailored to suit yours or your loved ones’
individual needs, lifestyles, and interiors.
Rather than feeling like an addition, these
solutions are designed to become a natural
part of the home, allowing homeowners
to move around safely and comfortably
without sacrificing the character of their
surroundings.
For many families, accessibility is about
more than convenience. It’s about peace
of mind. Knowing that loved ones can
continue to enjoy every part of their home
safely can make a world of difference,
reducing anxiety and helping to preserve
independence for longer.
Planning ahead is also becoming
increasingly important. Thoughtful
adaptations can help future-proof a
property, ensuring it continues to meet
changing needs in the years ahead. By
investing in the right solutions today,
homeowners can often avoid more
disruptive and costly changes later on.
The benefit of modern mobility products is
that they no longer require homeowners to
choose between function and appearance.
Advances in design and technology mean
that accessibility solutions can be sleek,
sophisticated, and carefully integrated into
existing spaces, enhancing everyday living
while maintaining the warmth and personality
that make a house feel like home.
Every person’s needs are unique, which is
why a tailored approach is so important. By
taking the time to understand how people
live and what matters most to them, mobility
specialists can create solutions that support
independence while complementing
individual tastes and lifestyles.
Ultimately, accessibility should enhance
a home, not detract from it. With the
right advice and carefully considered
adaptations, homeowners can continue
enjoying the comfort, familiarity, and
independence that come from living in a
home they love for many years to come.

THE IMPORTANCE
OF EXERCISE FOR
PEOPLE LIVING
WITH DEMENTIA
Exercise is an important part of maintaining
health and wellbeing for people living with
dementia.
Although dementia affects memory, thinking, and daily functioning,
regular physical activity can help individuals remain active,
independent, and engaged for longer. It benefits physical health,
cognitive function, emotional wellbeing, and social interaction,
making it a valuable part of dementia care.
One key benefit of exercise is improved physical health. Regular
activity strengthens muscles, improves balance and flexibility, and
helps maintain mobility. This can reduce the risk of falls, a common
concern for older adults. Exercise also supports heart health,
helps manage weight, and can lower the risk of conditions such as
diabetes and high blood pressure.
Exercise may also support brain health. Research suggests that
physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, which can help
maintain cognitive function. While it cannot cure dementia, regular
exercise may help slow cognitive decline and improve attention
and concentration.
Physical activity can also enhance mood and emotional wellbeing.
People living with dementia may experience anxiety, depression,
frustration, or loneliness. Exercise releases endorphins, helping to
reduce stress and improve mood. Group activities can encourage
social interaction and help individuals feel connected to others.
Many forms of exercise can be adapted to suit different abilities
and interests. Walking, chair-based exercises, dancing, gardening,
swimming, tai chi, yoga, and simple ball games are all suitable
options. These activities can improve fitness, coordination, and
balance while providing enjoyment and a sense of achievement.
Exercise can also improve sleep and reduce agitation or
restlessness. Establishing a regular routine of enjoyable physical
activities can provide structure and support overall wellbeing.
In conclusion, exercise is an essential part of supporting people
living with dementia. By improving physical health, supporting
cognitive function, enhancing mood, and encouraging social
engagement, regular physical activity can help maintain a better
quality of life and greater independence for as long as possible.
