President’s INSIGHT

Thumanity. In a world increasingly saturated with crises, conflict,

his month brought a rare piece of good news. Scientists may

have discovered a breakthrough treatment for pancreatic

cancer, one of the deadliest forms of the disease known to

and uncertainty, such news reminds us that progress is still possible.

Human ingenuity, despite everything, continues to push the boundaries

of what once seemed impossible.

The unfortunate reality, however, is that good news rarely travels alone.

There is never a shortage of challenges demanding our attention, and

sometimes it is difficult to know where to begin.

The war in Ukraine continues. People continue to die on both sides. The

frontlines appear increasingly frozen, trapped in a costly stalemate

that offers little hope and even fewer answers. As with so many wars

before it, history may eventually ask uncomfortable questions. Why did

so many have to die? What exactly was achieved? And why was it

necessary to sacrifice the demographic future of entire generations in

a region that will carry these scars long after the headlines have

disappeared?

At the same time, the Middle East remains at a critical crossroads. The

situation around the Strait of Hormuz evolves almost by the hour, while

the broader GCC region stands between competing futures. One path

leads toward cooperation, stability, and prosperity. The other leads

toward another cycle of division and confrontation. One can only hope

that wisdom proves stronger than impulse.

The world does not need more wars. It needs more statesmanship.

What often goes unspoken is that war is rarely experienced equally. For

some, it brings grief, displacement, uncertainty, and loss. For others, it

creates opportunity, influence, and wealth. Throughout history, conflict

has generated both cemeteries and fortunes—often at the same time.

Sometimes I find myself wondering how many wars humanity would

have witnessed if the sons and daughters of those making the

decisions were always standing in the first row. Perhaps fewer. Perhaps

not. We will never know.

What we do know is that while mothers mourn their children, while

families lose their homes, and while ordinary people endure

circumstances they never chose, there are always those far removed

from the consequences of their decisions. History has an almost ironic

way of distributing sacrifice and comfort unevenly. The people paying

the highest price are often those who had the smallest voice in the

conversation that led to conflict in the first place.

It is a sobering thought. It is also a profoundly human one.

Beyond geopolitics, economics, technology, and strategy lies a simple

truth: civilization advances when cooperation becomes more powerful

than confrontation, and when human dignity becomes more valuable

than victory.

The world has enough battlefields. What it needs now are bridges.

We no longer just consume media; we breathe it. Over the

last decade, the boundaries between traditional, social

and emerging digital platforms have dissolved, creating a

hyper-connected ecosystem that exerts an unprecedented

chokehold on global society. What began as a tool for connection

and entertainment has mutated into the primary architect of our

daily reality.

Consider how fundamentally our information pipelines have

shifted. Social media is no longer a secondary buffer for news. For

a staggering 53% of global internet users, platforms like TikTok, X

and Meta are now the primary gateway to world events. We have

outsourced the curation of truth to algorithms optimized for

outrage rather than objectivity.

Meanwhile, entertainment giants have restructured the cultural

marketplace. Netflix, pioneering the age of streaming dominance,

increasingly brokers aggressive, multi-billion-dollar deals

demanding absolute platform exclusivity. By locking culturallydefining

cinema and ‘live’ sports behind algorithmic paywalls, they

dictate not just what we watch but when and how we share

collective experiences.

Caught in the crossfire of this digital land grab, traditional media is

holding on for dear life. Local radio stations and legacy television

networks are watching their advertising revenue collapse into the

pockets of Big Tech, forcing them into a desperate, existential

scramble for financial survival. To stay afloat, many have

compromised their journalistic depth, trading rigorous

investigative reporting for the same sensationalized bait that

drives the digital economy.

As a dedicated professional who started a media career over 20

years ago and have had significant roles in various spheres of the

media industry, this downward trajectory in media has been

disheartening to observe.

The collective consequence of this media evolution is a profound

domino effect on human perception. When our news is hyperpersonalized

by social algorithms, our entertainment is siloed by

corporate gatekeepers and our legacy watchdogs are financially

starved, the shared reality required for a functional society,

fractures. We are left trapped in echo chambers, completely

untethered from a common narrative.

Ultimately, modern media has evolved past its original purpose as

a window to the world. It has become the room itself. If we do not

actively question the hands that manipulate the digital curtain, we

risk transforming from global citizens into mere characters in a

script we didn't write - trapped inside a beautifully designed cage

where the price of admission is our own autonomy.

Modern conflict is no longer fought primarily over territory, but over perception itself. In

the digital age, power belongs to those who can shape narratives, influence emotions,

manipulate attention, and construct reality at scale.

Governments, corporations, platforms, and media systems now operate inside a

permanent cognitive battlefield where information functions simultaneously as

communication, influence, and weapon. The human mind has become strategic

territory, while attention has become one of the most valuable geopolitical resources of

the twenty-first century.

The greatest danger of this era is not simply misinformation, but the collapse of shared

reality itself. Once societies lose a common understanding of truth, trust erodes,

institutions weaken, and civilization enters permanent fragmentation. The future of

global stability may ultimately depend on humanity’s ability to preserve cognitive

clarity in systems increasingly designed to manipulate perception.

human attention becomes a strategic asset. This opening manifesto for Edition 40 explores the rise of invisible

conflict — a global struggle over truth, cognition, identity, and psychological influence in an age where

The End of Visible Warfare

For centuries, civilizations understood war through

physical force. Conflict was visible, territorial, and

immediate. Armies crossed borders, weapons

destroyed infrastructure, and power projected

itself materially across geography. Even in its

brutality, traditional warfare remained recognizable.

But the architecture of conflict has changed.

The defining battles of the twenty-first century

increasingly unfold without soldiers, without

invasions, and often without public awareness that

conflict is occurring at all. Power now operates

through perception, narrative, emotional

manipulation, and the strategic shaping of reality

itself.

The contemporary world is witnessing the rise

of cognitive conflict as a dominant form of power.

Information systems no longer merely distribute

knowledge; they shape emotional behavior,

reinforce ideological identities, and engineer

collective perception through algorithmic

amplification. Modern influence operates

continuously and often invisibly, transforming

attention into a strategic battlefield where

narratives compete for psychological dominance.

As artificial intelligence, synthetic media, and

behavioral technologies expand, societies face

a growing challenge: maintaining the ability to

distinguish reality from engineered perception

in environments optimized for emotional reaction

rather than truth.

how billions of individuals emotionally process the

world around them. Perception is no longer formed

organically through direct experience alone. It is

increasingly filtered through systems optimized for

engagement, amplification, and behavioral

influence.

This changes the nature of power fundamentally.

The ability to shape perception at scale now

carries geopolitical, economic, and psychological

consequences comparable to traditional forms of

dominance.

Narratives can destabilize societies, intensify

polarization, alter elections, influence markets, and

reshape collective identity without a single

physical confrontation. Reality itself becomes

contested territory.

What societies believe now

shapes power more than what

societies know.

The Rise of Cognitive Warfare

Unlike traditional propaganda, modern cognitive

warfare rarely presents itself openly. It operates

continuously through fragmented information

streams, emotionally charged content, algorithmic

reinforcement, and digital tribalism.

The objective is not always persuasion in the

classical sense.

Increasingly, the objective is destabilization.

Confusion becomes strategic. Emotional

exhaustion becomes useful. Polarization becomes

scalable. In environments saturated with infinite

information, certainty itself begins to weaken.

Societies no longer argue only about ideology or

policy — they begin arguing about reality itself.

At this stage, truth loses social stability.

And once shared reality fractures, collective trust

begins collapsing alongside it.

The Attention Economy of Power

The modern information ecosystem rewards

emotional intensity above all else. Fear, outrage,

anxiety, and conflict generate engagement more

effectively than nuance or reflection. Algorithms

learn this quickly because emotional stimulation

produces measurable behavioral results.

Over time, entire systems become optimized not

for understanding, but for reaction.

Human attention is gradually transformed into

extractable economic and political value. The

longer individuals remain emotionally activated,

the more predictable and influenceable their

behavior becomes. Attention therefore evolves

into one of the most strategically valuable

resources of modern civilization.

This is why contemporary conflict increasingly

targets cognition itself.

To influence perception is to influence behavior.

To influence behavior is to influence reality.

The Collapse of Shared Truth

One of the greatest dangers of this transformation

is not censorship, but fragmentation.

Modern societies no longer consume the same

reality simultaneously. Individuals exist inside

algorithmically personalized information

environments that reinforce identity, emotion, and

ideological alignment. Over time, populations

come to inhabit psychologically distinct worlds

despite occupying the same physical societies.

This produces a profound civilizational vulnerability.

Democracy, cooperation, and social trust all depend

upon some degree of shared reality. Without it,

consensus becomes unstable and institutions

gradually lose legitimacy. When every group

possesses its own interpretation of truth,

fragmentation becomes permanent.

Civilizations rarely collapse only through external

attack. Often, they collapse internally once they lose

the ability to agree on what is real.

Synthetic Reality

Artificial intelligence accelerates this transformation

dramatically.

Synthetic media, AI-generated narratives, deepfakes,

algorithmic persuasion systems, and automated

content production are rapidly reshaping the

informational environment of humanity. Reality itself

becomes increasingly programmable. The danger is

not only false information. The deeper danger is

perceptual overload.

As synthetic content scales infinitely, individuals lose

the psychological capacity to verify, contextualize, or

emotionally stabilize information flows. In such

environments, emotional reaction begins replacing

conscious judgment.

The human nervous system becomes overwhelmed

by engineered reality.

The Invisible Battlefield

The most powerful aspect of cognitive warfare is its

invisibility. People rarely experience manipulation as

manipulation. They experience it as intuition, emotion,

outrage, identity, or personal conviction. Influence

becomes most effective precisely when it feels

natural.

This is why modern conflict no longer requires direct

coercion. Control increasingly operates through subtle

architecture: platform design, narrative repetition,

emotional amplification, and algorithmic exposure.

The battlefield becomes invisible because it exists

inside daily life itself.

Human civilization is entering a period in

personalized, and emotionally engineered at a

planetary scale. In this environment, independent

thought becomes more than intellectual discipline —

it becomes civilizational defense. Because in the end,

the greatest struggle of the twenty-first century may

not concern territory, wealth, or even technology.

It may concern humanity’s ability to preserve clarity

inside systems designed to shape perception itself.

MADE IN…

H.E. Rosalia Artega, Former President and Vice President of Ecuador,

GCBL Ambassador, Former Secretary General of the Amazon

For decades, when purchasing an item, it has been difficult to

determine its true origin. Even when a label reads “Made In”, it

offers no real assurance of where the product was ultimately

manufactured.

In the case of clothing or electrical and electronic devices, the raw

materials may come from one place, the technology from another.

Manufacturing may occur in a country that offers maquila conditions

and design may be carried out elsewhere.

Or perhaps even on a vessel in the middle of the sea, labor may come

from yet another part of the world and labeling and packaging may

be handled by people of different nationalities. In short, the list is long

and many of us have likely experienced what I have just described.

Perhaps the only exceptions are artisanal products made in remote

communities with little contact with the outside world. Even then,

craftsmanship, raw materials and designs may still be influenced by

global trends.

In today’s world, there is a growing concern about the effects of wars

and conflicts, which undoubtedly, impact society as a whole,

particularly through rising fuel prices and other essential components

of daily life, such as fertilizers derived from the petrochemical industry

or sourced from regions now facing severe difficulties in transporting

their products due to disruptions caused by conflict.

H.E. Rosalía Arteaga

is a prominent Ecuadorian politician

and lawyer who served as Ecuador’s

first female President in 1997.

She previously held roles as

Vice President and Minister of

Education.

Arteaga is also known

for her advocacy in education,

women's rights, and environmental

issues, and has authored several

books on these topics.

As a result, there is an increasing tendency to value the local -

encouraging the consumption of goods produced nearby. This shift

draws attention to the reduced availability of imported products,

along with the resulting increase in prices for items that we may have,

perhaps irresponsibly, grown accustomed to finding at affordable

costs.

For this reason, it is essential to focus on the local without neglecting

the influence of the global. Yet in recent years, the term “glocal” has

been coined to describe a synthesis, not merely of two words that

might appear contradictory or even opposing but more importantly, of

two interwoven sets of ideas.

In this sense, the global emerges as a reality shaped by

interconnected ecological, financial and scientific dynamics, while the

local embodies a sense of belonging and identity that grows

increasingly meaningful and immediate in our daily lives.

Nationalism too, is playing a role in highlighting local industries, which

are likely to gain greater prominence in these changing times. Thus,

the notion of “made in” may begin to acquire a clearer and more

meaningful identity.

or more than four decades, Reiner Opoku has operated at the intersection of art, culture, business,

and sustainability. From collaborating with some of the world's most influential contemporary

artists to building bridges between creativity and global brands, his work reflects a belief that

culture is not merely something we admire; it shapes how we see the world. In this conversation,

Fhe shares insights from a career dedicated to connecting vision, legacy, and impact.

There is the age-old saying, “Life imitates art far

more than art imitates life.”. However, for worldrenowned

Curator, Manager, Art Consultant and

International Art Agent, Reiner Opoku, the

pendulum perhaps swings both ways on occasion.

He is best known for his ability to bridge the gaps

among fine art, major brands and environmental

activism as he has aligned contemporary artists

with global brands such as Audi and various

fashion houses and institutions. Opoku has

curated exhibitions and produced publications for

major artists including Julian Schnabel, Sigmar

Polke, David LaChapelle, and Jiří Georg Dokoupil.

The multi-creative, serial entrepreneur has

reportedly mentioned in the past that he didn’t

choose art but rather, art chose him. In hindsight,

Reiner Opoku represents a rare category

of cultural strategist capable of operating

simultaneously within contemporary art, luxury

branding, publishing, environmental advocacy,

and international cultural diplomacy.

His work demonstrates a broader shift occurring

across global industries: the convergence of

culture, commerce, sustainability, and identity.

At a time when authenticity has become one of

the world's most valuable assets, Opoku's career

illustrates how art can function not only as

creative expression but as a strategic framework

for shaping perception, preserving heritage, and

building long-term cultural relevance.

was there a specific, defining moment or a particular

artwork in his early days in Cologne that made

him realize that art had claimed him?

Answered Opoku, “In the end, it was the artists

themselves who made me choose art, back when

I was 23. In the early 1980s, Cologne, alongside

New York, became one of the key centers for

contemporary art. From these two cities, the ‘Neue

Wilde’ movement spread internationally and

brought a level of visibility to contemporary art

that hadn’t existed before.

I was lucky enough to meet some of the central

figures of that movement and become part of

their world. Artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat,

Julian Schnabel, Martin Kippenberger, George

Condo, and Georg Dokoupil, to name just a few,

shaped that time. With many of them, I had close,

personal relationships. The way they lived, thought

and worked is what really sparked and shaped

my long-term interest in art.”

The global fine art industry has experienced

intense commercialization over recent decades,

with historical reports valuing the total market

(including public auctions and private sales) at

approximately $65.9 billion. Even so, many people

don't completely grasp the notion of high art and

How would Opoku familiarize or describe it for

those who have never been exposed to the world

of high art in any shape or form?

“The famous German artist, Joseph Beuys, said in

the 1970s, ‘Everyone is an artist.’ It’s a simple idea,

but it explains quite well how people connect to

art. Because, in the end, everyone feels something

when looking at a work.

Art triggers emotions, thoughts, and associations

— if one is open to it. And that’s really the point for

most artists: to create something that resonates.

Price doesn’t come into it, at least not at the

beginning.”

Cars And Couture:

Strategic Luxury Pairings

One of the most popular luxury car brands,

Maybach, once partnered with Opoku, where he

drove innovation as the Consultant for the

strategic development of their art program. He

recalled the experience, “The aim was to position a

luxury brand like Maybach within the art world.

We achieved this through direct collaborations

with artists, as well as partnerships with institutions

such as the Louvre in Paris, the Serpentine Gallery

in London and the Fondation Beyeler in Basel.

The goal was to create meaningful overlaps

between audiences, connections that are relevant

and valuable for both sides. Maybach recognized

early on the potential of working with artists,

particularly in terms of corporate identity,

marketing and reaching new audiences.

A strong example is a project with the American

photographer, David LaChapelle. He was invited to

interpret both the 1932 Maybach Zeppelin and a

contemporary model in two independent works.

Given full creative freedom, he produced two

striking images. The result was a level of visibility

the brand had never experienced before while also

allowing the artist to create two distinct works that

later entered museum and gallery contexts.”

Never one to put himself in a box or to resist

unorthodox artistic pathways, this art connoisseur

had a rationale, a vision behind those steps. What

elements. Galleries, museums, auction houses

and critics all play an important role alongside the

simple factor of being in the right place at the

The Brioni Islands (known

in Croatian as the Brijuni

Islands) compelled him to

conceptualize yet another

artistic project albeit this

time, incorporating

literary non-fiction. Opoku

and his wife, Sabina,

married their talents and

embarked on an

authorship journey with

the book titled, “Brioni

Islands”.

The Brioni Islands is a

stunning, low-lying

archipelago located just

off the coast of the Istrian

peninsula in Croatia.

Comprising 14 islands and islets, the entire area is

protected as a National Park due to its unique

blend of untouched natural beauty and

fascinating historical layers.

Why were they both so inspired to promote from

mere captivation to actually penning a book

about and paying homage to the destination?

He explained, “It was not so much a sense of awe

as a moment of genuine surprise when we first

visited Brioni. Discovering a place like this - set in

the middle of the Adriatic, shaped by a rich history

and a unique natural landscape we hadn’t

encountered before - immediately sparked our

curiosity.”

And so, “Brioni Islands” found itself in journalistic

form - a comprehensive adventure immersing

readers into cultural history and visual exploration;

the latter, courtesy of celebrated photographer,

Tom Wagner. The book explores the Brioni Islands'

rich past - from Roman villas and Austro-

Hungarian elegance to Tito's socialist experiments

- while framing it as a “living laboratory” for

sustainability and future dialogue.

contrast, is something physical, something that

They are leadership vacuums.

Housing shortages, workforce displacement, justice system failures,

climate instability and youth mental health crises all dominate global

headlines. Governments, corporations, non-profits and institutions

regularly acknowledge these problems. Funding discussions occur

constantly. Research is abundant. Public awareness is high. Yet the

problems continue to worsen.

The issue is not simply a lack of money or information. Increasingly, the

deeper problem is fragmentation. Too many leaders operate inside

narrow institutional lanes while the systems around them continue to

collide.

Housing instability affects workforce participation. Workforce instability

affects mental health. Mental health impacts education, healthcare

systems, public safety and long-term economic productivity. Justice

systems influence employment opportunities, family stability and

generational poverty. Climate instability affects migration, supply

chains, insurance markets and national security. Absolutely none of

these systems function independently, even if the institutions that

Modern leadership has become highly specialized and incentivedriven.

Political leaders focus on election cycles. Corporate leaders

focus on quarterly performance. Institutions protect budgets,

Are sustainable investments declining in the GCC region? Let’s

start with the findings of a recent PwC report. “Green investments

key GCC industries could have a profound impact by 2030,

unlocking up to US$2 trillion in cumulative GDP contribution, creating

more than 1 million jobs, and encouraging foreign direct investment

(FDI).”

If this is the case, why would funding in ESG-focused funds and

sustainable investments drop? As one datapoint, capital markets

analyst, PitchBook, has pointed to a worldwide decline in VC

fundraising in 2024. Furthermore, late-stage deals vanished as

investors switched their focus to early-stage start-ups, with 47% of

MENA investments falling in the $1 million to $5 million range. This

includes investing in the ESG sector. Climate-tech start-ups, for

example, find it extremely difficult to raise funds to scale. Why is

that?

During the Green Finance Conference, part of World Future Energy

Summit, I spoke on the panel: “Unlocking The Missing Middle Of

Capital - Funding For ClimateTech To Scale”. We spoke specifically

about how many of the technologies needed for climate

adaptation and mitigation, including AI-driven solutions, are either

yet to be invented or lack sufficient financing to scale.

Many climate-tech start-ups are caught in the ‘scale gap’ which

prevents banks from providing debt finance to breakthrough

technologies due to a higher risk perception of often low-risk

facilities. Debt financing is further compounded by the limited

tangible assets most start-ups can offer as collateral, a mismatch

between the start-ups’ long-term investment needs and the

available short-term debt and the lack of a track record. A nascent

industry and the innovative nature of their solutions introduce

higher risks. As many innovative climate-tech start-ups operate in

emerging sectors with limited operating history, they often do not

meet the banks’ creditworthiness criteria.

What is the solution and why do I foresee near-future changes? A

BCG study stated that they expect the climate technology

financing landscape to evolve significantly over the next 5-10

years, with increased public and private capital availability for

climate projects driven by growing awareness of climate urgency

and potential returns. Blended finance is the key. Blended finance

can be defined as “the use of catalytic capital from public or

philanthropic sources to mobilize additional private sector

investment in sustainable development”.

The conclusion is that sentiment remains strong globally, even as

average portfolio allocations edged down slightly. Expectations

about returns continue to shape investment decisions.
