Your paper to

stop milestone man

BY SAM COUGHLAN

When West Melton front-rower

Blair Colombus was diagnosed

with cancer two years ago, one

item immediately went on his

to-do list: reach 100 division

one games.

On Saturday, the 45-yearold

will bring up the milestone

when West Melton hosts

Hurunui in their final combined

country match of the season.

Colombus was left stranded

on 94 games after being

diagnosed with stage-three

bowel cancer in June 2024. The

cancer has since progressed to

stage four, but he returned to

the team determined to reach

100 games.

“It’s been something I’ve been

looking forward to, I missed

running out with the guys and

playing a bit of rugby,” he said.

“I’ve missed celebrating the

wins and going through the

losses with the team.”

Saturday’s match will also

be Colombus’ last for the

foreseeable future. He begins

a new treatment regime

next week that requires a

chemotherapy port to be fitted

in his chest, meaning he will no

longer be able to play.

Selwyn Times will be hitting

letterboxes on a Thursday from

July 2.

The change from a

Wednesday delivery has been

made to better serve readers

from a news and advertising

perspective.

Editor Barry Clarke said the

current editorial deadline was

mid-afternoon on a Monday,

meaning happenings later on

Monday and Tuesday could not

be covered.

“Selwyn Times has seen huge

readership growth in recent

years and now reaches 47,000

readers aged 15-plus every

week,” he said.

“The Selwyn District is a

tremendous community with so

much going on so this move to a

Thursday delivery timeslot will

be very beneficial.”

The new publication day will

also allow for better advertising

booking flexibility with the time

frame moving to Monday 5pm

prior to publication.

Previously the deadline for

bookings was Thursday 1pm.

Said Allied Media regional

manager Steve McCaughan:

“The move benefits local

advertisers, giving businesses

greater flexibility and the

opportunity to connect with

readers closer to the weekend,

when many people are planning

activities, shopping, and

making important purchasing

decisions.”

Holiday closures to trim costs

as rates rise nears sign-off

In brief

BY DANIEL ALVEY

Libraries and the Selwyn Sports

Centre will now close between

Christmas and New Year to save

about $53,000 for ratepayers.

The decision was made as the

council works towards finalising

its Annual Plan, which will be

adopted on June 30 and sets out

spending for the coming year.

Final modelling is still being

completed, but the council is

forecasting an average rates

increase of 4.5%.

Selwyn Sports Centre and

libraries are already closed on

public holidays but now will also

be closed from December 27 to

January 4, excluding Te Ara Ātea.

Te Ara Ātea will remain open

with reduced hours on Anzac

Day and Matariki. The Selwyn

Aquatic Centre will close only on

Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New

Year’s Day and January 2.

Mayor Lydia Gliddon said the

first year of the closures would

effectively be a trial.

“We will very quickly get

community feedback on this,”

she said.

The council has also decided

not to proceed with a proposal

to make its facilities cashless.

The change would have saved

about $20,000 a year, but strong

public feedback saw the idea

shelved.

The council has confirmed libraries will be closed on public holidays and from December 27 to January 4.

“Submissions support retaining

cash as a payment option,

particularly for older residents

and those concerned about

emergency resilience,” the

council said.

A shift to a user-pays rubbish

collection system at the

Upper Selwyn Huts was also

confirmed, replacing communal

bins.

A survey by the Selwyn Huts

Owners Association found a

preference for individual bins

for each property.

Council solid waste manager

Andrew Boyd said once the

council knew which properties

had ordered bins, staff would

work with the association on

placement in order to avoid

congestion on collection days.

The council also deferred

setting a licence-to-occupy fee

for the settlement until the

2027/28 financial year.

Interim chief executive Steve

Gibling said the council would

continue working with residents

on any future fee and noted they

already paid rates on the land.

Error spotted

in charges for

wastewater

PHOTO: RNZ ,

NATE MCKINNON

BY DANIEL ALVEY

Selwyn Water has corrected

a mistake which led some

residents to believe they would

have to pay a higher than

expected wastewater charge.

The council-owned company

made an error in the fees and

charges schedule of its water

services strategy consultation. It

incorrectly stated the owners of

properties on roads with sewer

lines they were not connected

to would still have to pay the

same full rate as a property

using the sewer line.

Currently property owners in

that situation would pay 50%

of the annual $952 wastewater

charge so they would be able to

switch from septic tanks to the

sewer network in the future.

The error was noticed by

several submitters, including

the Rolleston Residents

Association.

Selwyn Water chief executive

Alex Cabrera said the company

was aware of the error.

“This was an oversight in how

it was presented in the fees and

charges schedule,” he said.

“As part of reviewing that

feedback, we identified that the

charge had been incorrectly

entered as 100% rather than the

intended 50%.

“The error occurred because

the water supply serviceability

charge is set at 100%, and

that figure was inadvertently

replicated for wastewater.”

Cabrera said the fee will

remain as it was before Selwyn

Water took over the delivery of

drinking water and wastewater

services from the council last

July.

“We will be

reviewing our

strategy and

pricing again

in line with the

council's next

Long Term Plan

and will continue

to engage with

the community on

any changes.”

Residents’

association chair Mark

Alexander was relieved the

charge was an error.

There were 128 public

Alex Cabrera

submissions made on the water

services strategy, which sets

out Selwyn Water’s plan for the

next 12 months. The submitters

were also asked if they would

support bringing infrastructure

upgrades forward when the

district’s growth was faster than

expected if it would mean there

bills increased.

The majority of the

submitters did not support the

move.

Cabrera did not say whether

the public feedback would

affect Selwyn Water’s plan to

meet the demand from new

growth.

“Through our engagement,

we’ve been clear that

wastewater capacity is an issue

we need to investigate further.

We are undertaking detailed

work on this now and once that

is complete, we will re-engage

with the community to discuss

the options and next steps.

“We have also been up front

that we cannot compromise

on public health and

environmental requirements.”

In 2026/27, the company

plans to spend $15.758 million

on upgrades to the district’s

water network to keep up

with growth. It also plans to

spend $24.194m on wastewater

network projects over that

period.

Selwyn Water’s strategy

stated: “In several cases,

actual development demand

is exceeding the assumptions

used in earlier infrastructure

models, creating a material

gap between existing capital

budgets and the investment

now required to maintain levels

of service.

“In water and wastewater

reticulation networks, growth

has created the need for

accelerated and expanded

upgrades, including new pump

stations, reticulation and

storage to manage increasing

peak demands and improve

resilience.”

The Selwyn Water board is

due to approve the strategy

by Friday. It will then report

back on how the community

feedback was included in its

decision by June 30.

The new pricing will take

effect from July 1.

Council sticks with LGNZ as reforms loom

BY DANIEL ALVEY

The council will remain a

member of Local Government

New Zealand.

Mayor Lydia Gliddon said she

preferred “to be in the tent than

out of the tent” amid ongoing

local government reforms.

“In my view, there is power

in numbers in the

situation we have

in front of us,”

she said.

Councils have

53 days to submit

plans to the

Government on

how to amalgamate

with other

councils in their Lydia Gliddon

region, which

came on top of rates capping

and Resource Management Act

reforms.

Councillors voted six to two

to remain a part of the national

association, which represents

councils across the country.

Gliddon voted to retain the

membership along with Sophie

McInnes, Denise Carrick, Rhys

Laraman, Aaron McGlinchy,

and Sarah Barnsley.

Samuel Wilshire and John

Verry voted against renewing

the council’s membership, while

councillor Tracey Macleod and

deputy mayor Brendan Shefford

abstained. Elizabeth Mundt

was absent from the meeting.

The annual membership

costs $63,000 and provides

the council with five votes at

LGNZ’s annual general meeting,

tickets.

LGNZ was previously chaired

by Sam Broughton, who

resigned from the association

after losing the mayoralty in

October.

Carrick said she had changed

her view on the association.

“I was probably one of the

ones that thought it was a waste

of money… but I went to the

LGNZ (conference) in Christchurch

and did change my mind,

and one of the things that

changed my mind is that different

people are leading it,” she

said.

Wilshire

labelled LGNZ “a

bunch of headless

chickens”.

Wilshire has

been an opponent

of the group since

last year’s local

government election

campaign.

“I don’t like the

Samuel

Wilshire

fact that at the AGM, how many

votes you get depends on the

size of the membership fee,”

Wilshire said.

He said the councils best

placed to navigate local

government reform were those

not affiliated with LGNZ.

Currently, seven councils do

not belong to the association,

including Christchurch and

Auckland.

McInnes, the longest-serving

current councillor, described

LGNZ as “immensely valuable”.

“At the moment, there are an

awful lot of webinars on the

reform programme barrelling

towards us like a freight train,

and that is information we

would struggle to get access to

directly otherwise,” she said.

McInnes said LGNZ provides

support for elected members in

an otherwise “lonely job”.

“This is the closest you have to

a union as an elected member.

There are support groups

for women, there is access to

counselling through this.

“We don’t get access to any

of this because we are not

employees of a council,” she

said.

Ellesmere to

benefit from

legacy funds

BY DANIEL ALVEY

More than a quarter of a million

dollars will be returned to the

Ellesmere community through

a new fund established by the

council.

The $263,000 balance is what

remains of the now-dissolved

Ellesmere Reserves Board Fund.

Last year, the council decided

the remaining money would be

used to maintain and upgrade

reserves across the district.

However, last week councillors

unanimously backed a notice of

motion from councillor Tracey

Macleod to instead establish a

community fund for the Ellesmere

Ward.

The fund has its origins in

1921, when Thomas Evans Gamble

left about 105ha of farmland

to the Crown. The land was later

established as a reserve managed

by the Ellesmere Domain

Board.

Parts of the land were leased

for farming, golf and other uses,

generating income that was used

to support recreation reserves

within Ellesmere.

Macleod said keeping the

funding in Ellesmere honoured

Gamble’s intentions.

“We can’t know exactly what

he thought, but his will does give

us an indication,” she said.

The land generates about

$64,000 a year, which will

replenish the fund over time.

MacDonald walks back toll road comments

BY DANIEL ALVEY

Christchurch City councillor

Sam MacDonald has backed

away from his controversial toll

road comments.

MacDonald said at a city council

meeting earlier this month

that Selwyn and Waimakariri

residents could be tolled for

entering Christchurch if their

councils refused to merge with

the city council.

He was questioning how costs

could be recouped from the

neighbouring districts for the

facilities and infrastructure they

use in the city.

“Do we put toll roads on and

insist they can’t come in without

finally paying their fair share?”

The comment gained national

media coverage and upset

Selwyn district councillor Samuel

Wilshire and Mayor Lydia

Gliddon.

But MacDonald

told Selwyn Times

some people took

his comment too

literally.

“It was an illustrative

example

of when we are

thinking longer

term about Canterbury,

the value

that should be put

Sam

MacDonald

on whether everyone is contributing

equally to the assets

we are benefiting from. I think

everyone jumped straight to

that I’m going out next week

to install toll roads and build a

wall,” he said.

Wilshire hit back at MacDonald

after his initial comment,

saying people in Christchurch

eat food produced by Selwyn

farmers, wear wool from its

sheep and drink wine from its

vineyards.

Wilshire believes Selwyn has

also paid its fair share for new

facilities, such as the $683 million

One NZ Stadium, through taxes,

with $230m of the cost covered by

the Government.

“Compared to co-funded projects

in Selwyn, they do receive

the lion’s share,” Wilshire said.

MacDonald acknowledged the

taxpayers’ contribution.

He said assets like the stadium

are built to generate economic

activity by attracting people to

stay in the city.

“The reality of our

neighbouring councils is they

often don’t have to do that.

Christchurch will pay for events

for the city Selwyn and Waimak

are often the beneficiaries of

that.”

As a joke, Wilshire gave

MacDonald a $1 coin at a public

meeting in Christchurch last

week.

“I gave him a bit of a stick and

then handed him a $1 and said:

‘Here you go, you need this’.”

Wilshire said MacDonald

“laughed it off” and tried to give

it back.

MacDonald said Canterbury

councils need to look at what’s

best for the region, not just their

own district.

“The biggest risk I see is we fall

into patch protection and looking

after our jobs and not thinking

what is best for Canterbury.”

Gliddon said she wants the

focus to be on what is the best

proposal for Canterbury, not

councillors from neighbouring

districts getting into slanging

matches over tolls.

Village will continue

work on kea bylaw

BY DANIEL ALVEY

Advocates seeking a bylaw to

stop people from feeding kea will

continue their push despite being

knocked back by the council.

The council said the bylaw

proposal for Arthur’s Pass does not

fit within its legal powers.

“This is not something council

would lead through a bylaw,

as it sits outside our statutory

role and is already addressed

within the existing legislative

framework,” said council head

of regulatory Jacquie Muir.

Kea Conservation Trust

community engagement

co-ordinator for Arthur’s Pass,

Renée Habluetzel, disagreed

with the council’s opinion.

She said the community had

received an informal legal

opinion suggesting there may be a

workaround to progress a bylaw.

“Our understanding is that

a kea feeding bylaw would fit

with the Local Government

Act because of the harm to

property, the public health risks

from food attracting rodents,

and the distress caused to

people when kea are fed,” she

said.

Muir said kea are a protected

species and primary

responsibility for their management

rests with the Department

of Conservation, which administers

the Wildlife Act 1953.

However, Habluetzel said the

Wildlife Act does not prevent

people from feeding the birds.

She said the ultimate goal of

a bylaw would be to encourage

kea back into the bush,

where they are less exposed to

risks associated with human

interaction.

Habluetzel said the bylaw

would be used primarily as

an educational tool, with

enforcement considered a last

resort.

‘I’ve just got

to keep on

smiling’

› From Page 1

“They wanted to do it this

week, and I said, sorry, I’ve got

an appointment on Saturday, I

need to be well for it, it’s a big

one.

“So they deferred things, and

Monday morning, I go and get

my port put in.”

Bowel cancer runs in Colombus’s

family. His grandfather

Billy Young died before he was

born, and Billy’s brother Robert

died when Colombus was a

child.

“It was always on my to-do

list (to get checked), I just didn’t

realise I was going to be this

young having to do it,” he said.

“But I’m glad I did go and get

checked, it could have been a lot

worse. When I was diagnosed, it

was stage three, so it was pretty

bad at that stage. The fight

started straight away.”

His only symptom before diagnosis

was persistent diarrhoea,

which he initially thought was

a stomach bug picked up on a

family holiday in Fiji.

When it went on for more than

a month, he went to his doctor

and mentioned his family history.

Blood tests came back negative

but Colombus was referred

for a colonoscopy, which found

a tumor in his colon. He had surgery

to remove the tumour, but

subsequent lumps were later

found in his lungs.

After his diagnosis, Colombus

made a list of goals he wanted to

achieve.

Playing his 100th game for

West Melton was one of them.

Another was finishing a Bachelor

of Management at the University

of Otago, which he completed

earlier this year. He also wanted

to keep up the family tradition of

holidaying in Fiji.

This year, 18 friends joined the

family on the trip, and next year’s

holiday is already being planned

for April.

He is still able to work as a

production manager at the

Christchurch Engine Centre, who

helped fund his bachelor's degree

– an achievement he said he was

proud of.

Colombus with wife Eliza, and their children Amelia and Levi, who both play rugby

at West Melton.

"Managing to finish it off was

pretty cool. Hopefully the kids

will see me and think ‘if Dad can

finish something when he's not

too well, why can't I?’"

Colombus and wife Eliza have

two children, 13-year-old Levi

and nine-year-old Amelia, who

both play rugby for West Melton.

He expects Saturday’s milestone

to be emotional, and said

the club had been a huge support

for his family.

“When I went through my first

lot of chemotherapy, I was pretty

sick, and my wife and the family

weren’t able to do too much at

home, so (the club) dropped me

out shopping and fuel vouchers

and stuff, it was pretty special.

“The people down there, even

people that I don’t directly talk

“I’ll get sick, there will

be days when I’m down

in the dumps, and there

will be days where

hopefully I’m good and

able to come to work like

normal. That’s the goal.”

Blair Colombus

to, they know what’s going on

with me, they always come up

to say ‘hi, how are you doing’,

check in on me.”

Colombus said there were

times the diagnosis hit him hard,

but he tried to keep himself busy

rather than dwell on it.

“You actually feel fine in yourself

and in your body, it’s just

what’s growing inside is what’s

killing you. It’s a bit of a mind

game,” he said.

“I’ve got to keep my head up.

My motto is I’ve just got to keep

on smiling and live for today.”

The treatment next week

is known as the Breakwater

regimen and involves a mix of

chemotherapy, tablets and other

IV treatments that have shown

success overseas.

“I’m living in hope, I don’t

know what’s involved,” he said.

“I don’t know how many times

a week I’ve got to go there, if

it’s weekly or fortnightly. I’ve

got these chemo tablets I’ll be

having as well

“And yeah, I’ll get sick, there

will be days when I’m down in

the dumps, and there will be

days where hopefully I’m good

and able to come to work like

normal. That’s the goal.”

Struggle of Sleep After 60

Alison had been struggling with

a problem shared by many Kiwis

over 60.

”I’ve never been one to sit

still,” she laughs. “There’s always

something happening, someone to

see.”

If she’s not down at her local

pool, Alison can often be seen

briskly walking around the park

with friends. The 64-year-old

has always been active. First to

organise a coffee catch-up, last to

leave a dinner party, the one who

remembers everyone’s birthday.

But lately, Alison was quietly

struggling with sleep. Her energy

would dip after a poor night,

leaving her exhausted, more than

she realised.

“When I don’t sleep well, I really

notice it,” Alison explains. “Without

good sleep, I struggle to keep up

with my activities. It starts to impact

everything.”

The pool sessions became harder

to face. Walking with friends felt

like a chore rather than a joy. She

found herself making excuses to

stay home.

“I was becoming someone I

didn’t recognise,” she admits. “The

woman who always said yes was

suddenly finding reasons to say no.”

Research confirms Alison’s

experience. As we age, our bodies

make less melatonin, the hormone

that tells us it’s time to sleep. Our

sleep becomes lighter and we wake

up more often. We also spend less

time in deep sleep, when the brain

cleans itself and the body repairs.

This creates three main problems:

trouble falling asleep, waking up

during the night, and feeling tired in

the morning even after hours in bed.

After searching for a natural

solution, Alison discovered Koru

Sleep at her local pharmacy.

“I was sceptical at first,” she

admits. “I’d tried other things that

promised the world and delivered

nothing. But the pharmacist said

customers kept coming back for

more, so I thought I’d give it a go.”

Unlike typical sleep aids that

just make you drowsy, this formula

works in three ways at once. Koru

Sleep helps calm the mind while

also helping the body make its own

sleep hormones.

The formula combines

passionflower and L-theanine to

quiet racing thoughts, while valerian

helps you feel naturally sleepy. It

also includes 5-HTP with vitamin

B6, nutrients that help the body

produce melatonin. Magnesium and

zinc support the deep sleep stages

when the body does its best healing.

“It relaxes me and helps me get

off to a good sleep,” Alison reports.

“When I don’t take it, I certainly

notice it takes longer and I don’t

wake as clear headed.”

For Alison, getting help with all

three parts of sleep has been lifechanging.

“When I have good sleep,

I’m able to do so much more,”

she reflects. “Household tasks,

gardening, being with friends,

keeping up with grandchildren.

Everything becomes manageable

again.”

She’s back at the pool three

times a week. The park walks have

returned. She’s organising dinner

parties again.

“I didn’t even realise quite how

exhausted I had been,” she adds.

“Finding something that actually

supports proper, restorative sleep

has given me my life back.”

Roading programme delivered early and under budget

Smarter, more innovative roading maintenance is

delivering strong results in Selwyn — with collaboration

and techniques like microsurfacing delivering projects

ahead of schedule and under budget.

By April, officially marking the end of the roading

construction season, the Council had completed 83

km of resurfacing on time and nearly 14% under budget.

It had also passed its plan to rebuild 7.5km of road,

completing more than 12 km, and 9.5% under budget.

These savings have funded upgrades to an additional

12 km of road, while early delivery helped avoid rising fuel

costs, saving ratepayers even more.

This reflects the strength of our teams and contractors,

working smarter to improve safety and deliver the best

outcomes for our community.

Building from the ground up

Teaching was always a calling

for West Rolleston Primary

principal Sylvia Fidow. Reporter

Daniel Alvey sat down with her

to reflect on more than 30 years

in the profession

Sylvia Fidow prides herself on

knowing the first names of all

760 pupils at West Rolleston

School.

Fidow has been principal

since the school opened in 2016

and says she never imagined it

would grow so quickly.

“I don’t think anyone expected

the growth we’ve had, and we

didn’t expect the diversity of the

population,” she said.

As a New Zealand-born

Samoan woman, Fidow has

drawn on her own experiences

to build a school culture centred

on belonging.

“It’s about always making sure

people feel that sense of belonging,

and they can be themselves,

and their culture can be honoured

in the school setting.”

That belief has been shaped by

her upbringing in Christchurch,

where she experienced racism

at school.

“In the 80s, growing up with

brown skin, there was racism, so

you always had to prove yourself

slightly more.”

Fidow attended St James

School in Aranui. Her parents

separated when she was 11,

but her father, Alex, a wellknown

boxing trainer, remained

a strong influence on her

education.

Alex immigrated from Samoa

in the 1950s and initially worked

on the railways before becoming

a skilled welder, despite having

Fidow still likes to read to classes when she gets time.

West Rolleston Primary School principal Sylvia Fidow has been at the school since it opened in 2016.

no formal qualifications.

“My dad had to leave school

at the age of 12 to work on the

plantation, and because of that,

he was very strict on the importance

of schooling,” Fidow said.

To help pay for her education,

Fidow began working at 12,

tending the gardens at TVNZ’s

Gloucester St premises after

school while attending Sacred

Heart College, now Catholic

Cathedral College.

Although teaching was always

her passion, Fidow initially

enrolled at Canterbury University

to study law in an effort to

fulfil her father’s wishes.

“I only did it for one year – it

really wasn’t for me.

“I soon realised that was not

a passion and diverted back to

teaching, which was my passion.

“Teaching is a bit of a calling.”

After graduating from Teachers’

College, she taught at Levin

Primary School for a year before

returning to Christchurch.

She then taught at North New

Brighton, now Rāwhiti School,

and Richmond Primary before

being appointed assistant principal

at Shirley Primary.

About four months after the

birth of her son, Ezra, Fidow was

asked to step up to acting principal

when the school’s principal

left to undertake humanitarian

work in Africa.

At the time, her husband Tony

Green was studying, allowing him

to stay home and care for their

children.

Fidow later became principal

permanently and remained in the

role until 2015.

While at Shirley, the biggest

challenge for Fidow was dealing

with the aftermath of the February

22, 2011, earthquake.

When it struck, Fidow was conducting

an enrolment interview.

“I remember pulling the mother

and the child under the table. It

was so terrifying,” she said.

Following emergency procedures,

the school evacuated to the

field before liquefaction began

erupting from the ground.

“It happened so quickly –

the mud was coming up to our

knees.”

Fidow made the decision to

bring everyone back inside.

PHOTO: DANIEL ALVEY

The challenges continued in

the months that followed.

The school reopened with

portaloos, children were unable

to play outside because of

the dust, and Shirley took in

students from schools too badly

damaged to reopen.

Another challenge was the

number of families leaving

the city, meaning pupils were

regularly losing their friends.

In 2015, Fidow successfully

applied for “the opportunity

of a lifetime” – the chance to

be the foundation principal at

West Rolleston School.

“You are building a community

from the ground up, so

everything you do is new and

navigating change the whole

time.”

Since then, Fidow has hired

every staff member at the

school and personally conducts

all the pupils’ enrolment

interviews.

Fidow said keeping up with

growth remains a challenge.

The roll peaked at 850

students last year before the

opening of nearby Te Rau

Horopito this year eased some

of the pressure.

To create additional space,

the school has been allocated

two prefab classrooms but still

requires funding to have them

installed.

In the years ahead, the school,

which currently sits on the

edge of Rolleston’s urban area,

will be surrounded by housing

developments.

Outside of education, sport

has remained an important part

of Fidow’s life.

Although she never stepped

into the boxing ring, she trained

at her father’s Woolston gym

while playing social football for

New Brighton AFC, now Coastal

Spirit FC.

“My women’s football team

would go into dad’s gym in

Woolston and do some training,

but I would never get in the

ring.”

While she no longer plays,

Fidow remains a keen football

supporter. Earlier this year,

while on a family holiday,

they went to see her family’s

favourite team, Liverpool, in

action.

In late 2022, Fidow was

diagnosed with breast cancer.

After treatment and recovery,

she returned to running as part

of rebuilding her fitness.

“Since then, I’ve run 10

half marathons and rejoined

my running club. It has been

amazing.

“I run three to four times a

week – it helps me keep my

sanity,” she joked.

last year.

Regain your confidence and smile

at Cosmetic Denture Clinic Lincoln

Lincoln is fortunate to have the

Cosmetic Denture Clinic Lincoln,

recently opened at 5/12 Vernon Drive,

Lincoln, dedicated to transforming

smiles and restoring confidence

through expert denture care and

personalised solutions.

Wilson, the Senior Clinical Dental

Technician and Director, recognised

the potential for growth in the Lincoln

area as more people are moving away

from the CBD to seek a more relaxed

lifestyle with more space. With many

recent developments in the town,

there is a fresh energy, which presents

an opportunity for the Cosmetic

Denture Clinic to open a new branch in

Lincoln. Existing patients will no longer

need to travel far, and new patients

will have greater access to dental

services. This will help reduce waiting

lists, enable earlier treatment, and

potentially save money.

The services offered include dental

hygiene, precision-engineered

and hand-finished partial and full

dentures, and often same-day

denture repairs. They plan to expand

in the future by hiring a dentist, which

will provide more options for patients

in Lincoln. The practice emphasises

quality service, accuracy, and a quick

turnaround for patient services, all

at affordable prices. This efficiency

is made possible by cutting-edge

technologies and a dedicated team.

By utilising state-of-the-art techniques

and high-quality materials, including

intraoral scanners and digital

dentistry, they aim to put patients’

minds at ease and reduce anxiety. The

company operates six branches and

maintains strong relationships with

excellent dentists who they can refer

patients, based on their needs.

Wilson enjoys being a cosmetic

health practitioner because he can

help patients regain their smiles and

confidence, and he believes patient

care is key. He finds it satisfying to

deliver quality care that helps people

return to socialising with family and

friends without feeling self-conscious.

Cosmetic Denture Clinic is running

several excellent promotions until

September 8th, including an opening

Questions raised over new Hororata culverts

As someone who has been

observing flooding around

Hororata for 40 years and the

co-author of a report presented

to councils, I would like to ask

the council some questions re the

new culverts.

The culvert by the scout den.

Our observation was that this

needed to be increased threefold,

more now there is extra

water heading its way from the

back of the domain.

My question is, why did they

not leave the existing culvert in

place with the new one beside it?

We don’t have traffic lights on

a one-way bridge, so why the

need for traffic lights when the

road is one way when installing

the culvert?

The 40cm culvert on Scotts Rd

has never run anything like full,

so why was this replaced with a

90cm culvert?

The culvert on Downs Rd

cannot run full as the bank

on the upper side is some

40cm lower than the top of the

culvert.

The high flows simply flow out

into the paddock. But it would

be great if this is increased in

size and made two lane and

work is done on the approaches.

My big question is why is the

road going to be closed for five

weeks so they can do this job?

The 20-plus kilometre oneway

detour is costly and time

consuming to residents.

- Mike Davies, Hororata

Council infrastructure and

property executive director Tim

Mason responds: “This is important

work for Hororātā and it has

been a long project to carefully

plan the infrastructure needed to

make sure it significantly reduce

the flood risks around the township

in the long-term.

“Because this is a complex

job, we are meeting or speaking

directly with people to discuss

specific technical questions.

So, if people do have technical

questions we would encourage

them to contact us so we can

provide thorough answers.”

Gravel pit

I was pleased to see the new

gate, signs, and cameras at the

old gravel pit near Bells Rd,

West Melton.

It is comforting to know that

while roads, rates and rural

services may trouble lesser

minds, civilisation itself has

been saved from the grave

danger of children finding a

place to play.

No doubt the council has good

reasons. Councils always do.

If a puddle is discovered, a

committee is formed. If a child

climbs a bank, a sign is erected.

If fun is detected, the fun police

arrive with a gate, a camera,

and a budget code.

Ratepayers may now sleep

soundly, provided they do not

ask what it cost.

Letting high school students have a go

Girls from Rolleston and

Ellesmere colleges spent the

day finding out what a career

in electrical infrastructure

would involve.

The Girls with Hi-Vis

programme day was hosted

by electrical infrastructure

contractor, Connetics, in

Rolleston. The students worked

through hands-on exercises

with lines and street-lighting

plus a substation workshop

using the same gear the work

crews use.

Said Connetics capability

manager Peter Wilson: “You

can talk to a teenager about a

career in the trades all day, but

it clicks the moment they've

got the gloves on and have

actually done it.

“There's a generation of

work ahead as the country

builds a cleaner energy system,

and we need more people, and

more young wāhine, coming

through to do it.

“The best thing we can do is

open the doors and let them

‘Gold and glitter’

at 50th celebration

Lincoln Senior Citizens has

celebrated its 50th anniversary.

President Evelyn Carmen said

the group continues to grow and

currently has 63 members.

“They clearly enjoy the entertainment

and the chance to be

with old friends and meet some

new ones,” she said.

Carmen said last week’s celebration

included “lots of gold

and glitter”.

“They really enjoyed catching

up with friends, and some great

food from Selwyn Lions ladies.”

The group meets at 1.30pm on

the first Tuesday of the month at

the Lincoln Event Centre.

“We have a popular low-cost

raffles and sales table, and of

course, a scrumptious afternoon

tea. We try and have at least

three bus trips a year to places of

interest and with a lunch to follow

and lots of time to chat with

friends.”

Beyond the

Boarding Pass

Hello Selwyn, I’m Shannell

Your local mobile travel agent, and I’m excited to

officially introduce myself to the community through

the Selwyn Times.

After more than 25 years in the travel industry,

I still genuinely love helping people plan incredible

holidays and create memories that last a lifetime.

Travel has changed a lot over the years, but one

thing hasn’t – people still want personalised service,

honest advice, and someone they can trust when

planning something important.

I work as a mobile travel agent from my home office

here in Rolleston, which means flexibility for my

clients. Whether you’d prefer to chat over a coffee,

connect over the phone, or plan everything online,

I work around what suits you best.

Travel is far more than just booking flights and

accommodation. It’s understanding how you like to

travel, what experiences matter to you, and making

sure every detail is taken care of. Attention to detail

and personalised service are what I pride myself on

most.

Just as importantly, my clients know they have

support while they are travelling too. In a world

where disruptions can happen unexpectedly –

weather events, airline delays, strikes, cancellations

or changing global situations – having someone

in your corner makes all the difference. When you

book with me, you have a direct line to me while you

travel, with genuine personal support when you need

it most. No waiting on hold to overseas call centres

or trying to navigate problems alone.

Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to

travel extensively throughout Europe, UK, Asia,

South Pacific, Australia, Hawaii and the USA. I’ve

experienced everything from ocean cruising through

the Mediterranean to river cruising in Europe – and

this August I’ll be heading off on a Mekong River

Cruise through Vietnam and Cambodia.

These experiences allow me to offer first-hand

knowledge and practical advice to my clients,

particularly when it comes to tailor-made holidays.

Europe is a true passion of mine, especially

designing customised itineraries that combine rail

journeys, cruising, hidden gems and unforgettable

local experiences.

Outside of travel, life is busy and fun at home with

my husband – who is a builder – our two Daughter’s

and our Cavoodle, Rubi, who definitely believes she

runs the household!

This page is also the beginning of a new monthly

feature in the Selwyn Times: Beyond the Boarding

Pass. Each month I’ll be sharing destination

inspiration, insider travel tips, cruising ideas, industry

updates, cultural insights and practical travel advice

designed to help Selwyn locals travel smarter and

dream bigger.

Creek’s comeback powered by volunteers

Proud to be Me is a series telling the stories of Selwyn people. It

is National Volunteer Week, and Coen Lammers speaks to Hamish

Jones, the driving force behind the Boat Creek Restoration Project

Hamish Jones and the band of

volunteers who help out on the

Boat Creek Restoration Project

are a textbook example that

many hands make light work.

Over the past seven years,

Jones and a core group of fellow

volunteers have been at the

heart of a mega-effort to restore

18ha of land surrounding Boat

Creek, a spring-fed tributary

flowing into the lagoon at

the mouth of the Rakaia

River.

The project, running

along the southern boundary

of Rakaia Huts village,

was last year recognised

at the Selwyn Awards,

winning both the Community

Volunteer Award and

the Environmental Action

Award.

“There have been about 70

people involved one way or

another, contributing in excess

of 8500 hours of voluntary

labour,” Jones said, adding that

a core group of about four to six

people has carried the project

from “the get-go”.

Jones, who has lived at Rakaia

Huts for nearly nine years, said

the work has often been full on.

“When you’re on a roll, there’s

just so much work that needs

to be done and you don’t necessarily

stand up and have a

look at what you’ve achieved

until somebody else says maybe

you’ve actually done quite well,”

Hamish Jones

Jones said, referring to the

awards ceremony last August.

In its award entry, the project

was described as “an exceptional

example of what can be achieved

when a community unites behind

a shared vision” – a volunteer-led

effort that has turned a flooddamaged,

weed-choked reserve

into a haven for native wildlife

and a valued public space.

For the 67-year-old

Jones, restoration was

never going to mean planting

a few trees, cutting a

ribbon and walking away.

“Our goal right from the

get-go was that we didn’t

want to be one of those

projects that got some

money, planted some trees

and then five years later it

was all just long grass and

a few trees,” he said.

“We wanted to make sure that

we would look after what we set

out to do.”

That promise was also made

to the people and organisations

that backed the work financially,

he said.

“We wanted to make sure

the people that gave us money

could see value in what they had

funded us to do.”

Jones is proud of the scale

of what has been achieved by

a small band of volunteers

through thousands of hours of

unpaid work, planting more than

12,000 eco-sourced native plants,

From the first planting day in 2019 until now, Hamish Jones and a band of

volunteers have transformed the land surrounding Boat Creek.

restoring water flow, improving

water quality and fish spawning

habitat, and developing

walking tracks that have helped

reconnect local people with the

reserve.

He is quick to also acknowledge

the wider effort behind

the project – local whānau,

volunteers, businesses and environmental

experts – and said the

restoration’s deepest impact has

been the pride and stewardship it

has fostered in the community.

Jones said the group has completed

stage one, restoring 3.5ha

of the 18ha block.

Like many volunteer organisations,

the biggest challenge now is

sustaining the project.

“It’s very easy to get people

to come along and plant trees,

because that’s fun and exciting,”

he said.

“But it’s not so easy to find

people who will turn up for

one or two hours a week and

just ferret away at all the little

jobs that always need to be kept

on top of – weed control, track

maintenance, looking after the

creek,” Jones said.

“So someone will always

have to chip away at invasive

weeds such as old man’s beard

or convolvulus to stop them

getting hold and strangling the

good work.”

Jones and his wife settled at

Rakaia Huts after 20 years in

social services, managing up

to 300 staff in senior roles with

IHC and Idea Services around

the South Island.

He had never been involved

in a conservation project

before, but his experience

developing services for people

with disabilities and their

families proved unexpectedly

useful.

“You need to be able to work

with communities. You need to

be able to work with agencies.

You need to be able to bring

people along with you.

“That’s exactly what you have

to be able to do when you work

with a community volunteer

group as well.”

Jones said the Boat Creek

restoration is a legacy project

and many of the volunteers –

aged from 40 to well into their

80s – will never see the full

fruition of their work.

“We’ve got kahikateas and

totaras that can grow 30-50

metres tall, but we will never

see that. So we’re doing this for

the generations beyond us.”

Jones enjoys the thought of

leaving something behind for

younger generations to enjoy.

“We want to make sure we

are leaving it in a condition

that is worth looking after in

the future, and hoping someone

in the future will also see the

value in it and look after it.”

Every home

project starts

at the show

Thinking about renovating,

building, landscaping,

redecorating, or upgrading your

home? Before you spend hours

researching online or commit

to costly decisions, there is one

place that can save you time,

money, and stress – The Star

Home Show.

Returning to Wolfbrook Arena

from June 26–28, The Star Home

Show brings together hundreds

of trusted suppliers, builders,

land developers, designers,

landscapers, product specialists,

and industry and service experts

under one roof, making it easier

than ever to plan your next

project with confidence.

Said show sales manager

Marissa Stephen: "One of

the smartest starting points

for any home-related project

would be visiting a home show

event. Rather than scrolling

through websites and collecting

endless quotes, visitors can

speak directly with experts,

ask questions, watch live

demonstrations, and receive

personalised advice tailored to

their specific needs.”

Whether you're planning a

major renovation, building a new

home, upgrading your outdoor

spaces, or simply gathering

inspiration, The Star Home

Show helps you make informed

decisions before investing your

hard-earned money.

“One of the biggest advantages

of attending a home show is the

opportunity to see, compare, and

experience products and services

in person,” Stephen said.

The event is divided into four

dedicated zones, each designed

to help visitors explore different

aspects of home and lifestyle

improvement:

• Eco Zone – Discover

sustainable products,

energy-efficient technologies,

cost saving products and

materials, and environmentally

friendly living solutions.

• Outdoor Living Zone

– Explore the latest ideas

and products for outdoor

entertaining, landscaping, and

lifestyle enhancements.

• Taste Zone – Sample

innovative food and beverage

products and meet local

producers.

• Leisure Zone – Browse

caravans, bikes, and other leisure

lifestyle products. Speak to

professionals on health, finance,

mortgages, real estate, KiwiSaver,

insurance to name a few.

The value of attending is

clear. The Star Home Show

data shows 95% of visitors

have a building, renovation, or

redecorating project planned

within the next 12–18 months.

For many, the show is the ideal

starting point, providing access

to expert advice and product

comparisons to help you avoid

costly mistakes later.

“With around two-thirds

of attendees expecting to

spend more than $10,000 on

their upcoming projects, the

opportunity to meet suppliers

face-to-face, compare options

side-by-side, and access

exclusive show offers can make

a significant difference to both

budgets and outcomes.”

Visitors can also attend free

seminars and demonstrations

covering the latest trends

in home design, building

technology, landscaping,

sustainability, and smart home

innovation, ensuring they leave

with fresh ideas and practical

knowledge.

“The benefits of attending

a home show – saving time,

reducing risk, comparing

options, and accessing expert

advice – steps that take the

guess work out and guarantee

informed successful results

with any project big or small,”

Stephen said.

Beyond the planning and

Why business mentoring

is more than just advice

For many business owners, the biggest

challenge isn’t starting out – it’s figuring

everything out along the way.

“Business can be bloody lonely,” says

Christchurch mentor Alex Mann.

“You can’t always talk openly with staff, so

having someone who’s been through it and

isn’t rattled can make a huge difference.”

That’s where Business Mentors New Zealand,

supported locally by ChristchurchNZ,

is making an impact – connecting business

owners with experienced mentors who

offer perspective.

“I don’t have a magic formula,” says

Mann.

“But I do bring perspective, curiosity,

and the willingness to ask hard questions.

Sometimes people just need someone to

challenge and guide them.”

For first-time business owner Tri Phung,

that guidance came at the right time.

“We didn’t know a lot about setting up a

business,” he says.

“Running a team, having a plan, understanding

finance – that was all new to us.”

After joining the programme, the benefits

were immediate.

“Our mentor guided us through that

start-up phase – operations, finance, hiring,

marketing, everything.”

Mentoring doesn’t just provide support –

it speeds things up.

“Without it, it would have taken us

longer and we would have made more mistakes,”

says Phung.

That acceleration is something

Timaru entrepreneur Alicia Mabey also

experienced.

“It felt like my mentor was in it with me.

Her belief in the business gave me real confidence,”

she says.

For others, mentoring brings clarity and

accountability.

“My mentor helped me map out my

services, finances, and ‘why,’” says

Christchurch business owner Jenine Kerr.

“Having someone to bounce ideas off has

been invaluable.”

It can also open doors.

“My mentor helped me understand the

business process… and the importance of

networking and pitching,” says drone startup

founder George Khella.

“One of the most impactful pieces of

advice was not to try to do everything

alone.”

Mentoring is not one-way. For mentors

like Gideon Banks, it’s about strengthening

the wider business community.

“You don’t want to spend years trying to

figure it all out when someone has already

done it,” he says.

As ChristchurchNZ CEO Ali Adams puts

it, business mentors play a wider role.

“They support businesses through good

times and tough moments. That’s helping

build resilience and confidence in Christchurch’s

business environment.”

With ChristchurchNZ supporting access

to the programme, more local businesses

can tap into that experience early – and

affordably.

As Mann puts it: “It’s an incredible

service. Why wouldn’t you?”

Selwyn Shield debut adds

spice to Friday night clash

BY SAM COUGHLAN

The long-awaited first

competition clash between

Rolleston College and Lincoln

Combined is on Friday night.

The two sides met in preseason,

with Lincoln winning

35-13, but this will be their first

official match, with the new

Selwyn Shield on

the line for the

winner.

Rolleston has

home advantage,

with the match to

be played at Foster

Park, kicking off at

6.30pm.

The shield

was donated by

Ellesmere Rugby chair Leslie

Greenslade and her family.

The Selwyn

Shield

Greenslade previously worked

as a rugby administrator at

Lincoln High School for 17 years.

She said it was an exciting

time for the region, with both

schools now competing in the

Miles Toyota Championship.

Previously, Rolleston, Lincoln,

Darfield High and Ellesmere

College combined as Selwyn

Schools in the premiership.

“Hopefully it encourages people

to play for their school and

still get a pathway to go and play

higher honours.

“It would be great to have

those boys playing at a higher

level and bringing that back to

the clubs to play

club rugby.”

Lincoln are

enjoying a strong

debut campaign,

sitting fourth on

the table with

three wins from

their opening four

games. They beat

Cashmere High

36-14 on Saturday.

In contrast, Rolleston have

struggled in their opening

Leslie

matches, winless in four outings

after going down 37-22 to leaders

Christchurch Boys’ High second

XV on Saturday.

Greenslade said she expected a

tight contest between the sides.

“I’ve been watching a little bit.

I went and watched them in the

pre-season when they played

each other, which was a pretty

good game.

“I think Lincoln’s doing

slightly better than Rolleston,

but we’ll have to wait and see

what teams they’ve played. It’s

early days to see how they’re

going to end up.”

Greenslade sat on the fence in

terms of picking a winner.

“My heart would say Lincoln

should win, because that’s

where I was the rugby administrator,

but Rolleston’s team is

good as well.

“I wouldn’t pick one but I would

sort of like Lincoln to win.”

in their semi-final on Saturday.

Waihora, Darfield

bow out in semis

BY SAM COUGHLAN

Ellesmere will have no

representatives in Saturday’s

Combined Country final after

Waihora and Darfield both fell

one game short.

Waihora topped their group

unbeaten, edged Ashley in the

quarter-finals and struck early

in the semi-final against Glenmark-Cheviot

on Saturday.

However, they paid the price

for scoring just one try after the

10th minute, going down 26-17

to a side they had beaten during

round-robin play.

Darfield were competitive

in a 32-29 defeat to unbeaten

Kaiapoi on the road, but left

themselves with too much to do

after falling 18 points behind

with 20 minutes remaining.

Tries to Toby Kars and

Fletcher Mason, along with a

late penalty from Alister Collins,

narrowed the margin, but

Kaiapoi held on to secure a

place in the final, which they

will host.

The teams now have a week

off before the return of the

Coleman Shield competition.

Darfield will host West Melton,

Waihora will be at home to

Southbridge, and Lincoln will

travel to face Prebbleton.

The Coleman Shield will run

for a further three weeks before

the semi-finals.

White scores breakthrough

GT4 race win in Queensland

Chris White and Daniel Frougas after their win at Queensland Raceway on

Saturday night.

BY DANIEL ALVEY

Chris White has claimed his

first win in Australia.

White, alongside co-driver

Daniel Frougas, won race one of

the Monochrome GT4 Australia

Series under lights at Queensland

Raceway on Saturday.

The Prebbleton 19-year-old

earned the drive with GWR

Racing by winning the GR86

championship earlier this year.

“A massive team effort from

GWR Australia and Daniel,

no one in the team put a foot

wrong for the whole race, starting

4th to finish 1st overall,” he

said after winning.

It was also the first win in

Australia for the GT4 Toyota

Supra.

Frougas started the race

before the pair took the lead

during the driver change pit

stop, with White bringing the

car home.

“Once we got under way

again, I got a three-second gap

that was short-lived as another

safety car came out. I repeated

the process, getting a gap until

a third safety car came out,”

White said.

“Once the race got under way

with four laps to go, I stood my

ground 1.2 seconds ahead to

take the chequered flag.”

The second race ended in disappointment,

with a DNF after a

small hole was punched into the

radiator, causing all the water

to drain out.

White will next race in

Darwin on July 24-26.

(Should you forget, your apples

100g plain cake crumbs or

½ tsp mixed spice

4 Tbsp runny honey

3 heaped Tbsp golden raisins or

60g cranberries, fresh or frozen

the base of the fruit.

• Pour the orange juice into

A SOUP OF LEEKS

A light main course, substantial

enough for lunch and, if you

include the stems of rainbow

chard, rather more cheerful than

the usual lentil soup.

Ingredients

Serves 4

600g leeks

30g butter

250g carrots

2 stalks celery

75g small lentils, green or brown

1 litre vegetable stock

1 heaped Tbsp light miso paste

150g leaves of spring greens,

cabbage, chard

1 small lemon

Method

• Cook the lentils in boiling,

lightly salted water for about

15 minutes, until tender but not

soft. Drain and set aside.

• Trim the leeks, discarding

the roots and the tough tips of

the leaves. Slice the leeks into

rings about as thick as a pencil,

then pile into a colander and

wash very thoroughly in cold

water.

• In a large saucepan, melt

the butter, stir in the leeks and

cover the surface with a piece

of greaseproof paper or baking

parchment. This will help the

leeks to cook in their own steam

without browning.

• Cover with a lid and leave to

simmer.

• Peel and finely dice the

carrots and add to the leeks,

then finely dice and stir in the

celery. Continue cooking for

about 10 minutes, until the

vegetables are tender.

• Stir in the vegetable

stock and the miso paste and

continue cooking for about 10

minutes.

• Wash the greens, roll them

up and shred into ribbons. I like

to keep them quite wide, like

pappardelle.

• Stir them into the soup and

continue cooking for 3 or 4

minutes until the greens have

relaxed.

• Finely grate the lemon and

stir into the leek soup and

check the seasoning, adding salt

and black pepper.

• Ladle the leek soup into

deep bowls, the lentils scattered

over the surface.

Cebelio: innovation and expertise in plastics

From residential to commercial to

industrial, Cebelio has specialised in

plastics for nearly 20 years, and is

conveniently based in Wigram for all

your plastic-related needs.

Smart, sustainable home decking and

fencing

The future of home decking and

fencing is here. Cebelio offers innovative,

eco-friendly, 100% recycled alternatives

to hardwood timber products, in a range

of attractive colours to suit any home.

Whether you choose Futurewood

composite fencing, or Eco-decking – or

both! – you will benefit from the userfriendly

properties of these recycled

products. They are quick to install,

using normal woodworking tools, with

no oiling, staining or painting needed.

They are low-maintenance, waterproof,

and will not rot, splinter or lose their

colour. Most of all, they are far more

longlasting than traditional decking and

fencing materials, and look immaculate

for years. Enjoy all these benefits, while

adding longterm value to your property!

Professional services: cutting,

fabrication, engraving

Cebelio has deliberately built the

inhouse expertise to deliver your job

from design to completion. It stocks a

huge range of acrylics, polycarbonates,

polyethylenes and more. Cebelio can

cut, engrave and fabricate these into

whatever you need. From a homeowner

needing a bespoke pet door, to helping

a commercial partner achieve precisely

engineered parts, Cebelio can deliver the

complete project to your door.

Sustainability at its heart

Three years ago, Cebelio moved out

of crowded, traffic-bound Woolston to

establish its current purpose-built facility

in Wigram, deliberately situated to be

easily accessible to both Christchurch

and Selwyn customers.

The facility integrates state-of-theart

plastics and waste management.

Extraction equipment for the cutting

machines is purpose built. The

wastewater catchment tank installed

under the carpark takes care of any

micro-waste and sediment issues.

Cebelio’s excellent recycling partners

assist by transforming the remnants to

new and exciting uses.

Co-owners Glenn and Barry extend

the same level of care to their small,

happy and dedicated team of around 12

people, many of whom have worked with

the company for years. A top priority in

setting up the new location was to create

the attractive outdoor living showroom

– constructed using Futurewood

fencing and Eco-decking. Surrounded

by beautiful native plantings, this is an

attractive, relaxing space for staff to

use, and for customers to experience

the colours, textures and quality of the

products on offer.

Protect your most valuable asset

Local company Gumleaf Gutter Guard

is well known across the region for its

innovative yet simple gutter guards that

protect your spouting, eaves and home.

Attached to the roof, the guards keep

out everything from leaf litter to hail to

snow to nesting birds and even rats. No

more vermin in the roof or floods from

blocked-down pipes and spouting.

If leaves or other debris get clogged

in your guttering, it works its way into

your spouting and down pipes. This can

BEFORE

do significant damage to your costly

spouting, due to the acidity of the leaf

litter. Worse, if the spouting and down

pipes become blocked, flooding into the

eaves and soffit (overhanging section of

roof), and from there, into the house, is

a common – and costly – consequence.

Having these guards installed is a

huge benefit – quite simply, they extend

the life of the spouting to the life of the

roof.

The Gumleaf Gutter Guard was

AFTER

developed in Australia more

than 20 years ago, and has been

providing a quality and effective

solution in New Zealand for the last

decade.

Gumleaf is happy to install the

guards themselves, although the

ease of the design is such that the

installation is 100% DIY-friendly.

Company owner Rohan Rudd says:

“As long as you have a head for

heights, installing Gumleaf gutter

guarding is as easy as A B C – made

even easier with the guidance

of our instructional PDFs and

YouTube videos on our website.”

Gumleaf has also partnered

with Alps Continuous Spouting to

means that you can now access a

Winter gardening in Canterbury

At Intelligro Landscape Supplies, we’re

proud to help Canterbury gardeners,

landscapers and DIY enthusiasts create

thriving outdoor spaces year-round. We

offer a wide range of landscape supplies,

composts, mulches, gardening products

and hire equipment to make your

projects easier and more successful.

While winter may seem like a quiet

time in the garden, it’s actually one of the

best seasons to prepare for strong spring

growth.

Feed your soil

Winter is the perfect time to improve

soil health by adding compost to garden

beds, vegetable patches, and around

trees and shrubs. Compost helps improve

soil structure, increases moisture

retention, encourages beneficial soil life,

and provides valuable nutrients that will

be available when plants begin growing

again in spring.

Mulch matters

A fresh layer of mulch is one of the

most valuable additions you can make

to your garden during winter. Mulch

helps suppress weeds, protect plant

roots from frost, reduce soil erosion,

and retain moisture. It also improves

the appearance of garden beds while

gradually breaking down to enrich the

soil.

Tackle landscaping projects

The cooler weather makes winter an

ideal time to complete landscaping jobs

before the busy spring season. Consider

installing new garden edging, pathways,

raised beds or gravel areas now so

they’re ready to enjoy when warmer

weather arrives.

For these projects, our hire equipment

can save both time and effort. A plate

compactor is ideal for preparing stable

bases for paving, paths and landscaping

work, while our trailer hire makes

transporting materials and green waste

simple and convenient.

Plant winter crops

Canterbury gardeners can still enjoy

productive gardens through winter.

Garlic, onions, broad beans, brassicas,

spinach, silverbeet and winter lettuce

varieties all perform well during the

colder months.

Get ahead for spring

The work you do now will pay

dividends later. By improving your soil,

applying compost and mulch, controlling

weeds and completing outdoor projects,

you’ll set your garden up for a healthy

and productive spring.

Visit Intelligro Landscape Yard this

winter and chat with our team about the

best products and solutions for your next

gardening or landscaping project.

It’s time for the hardiest plants

Expert advice on what to do for

your garden this week

VEGETABLES

Jerusalem artichokes, shallots

and garlic are among the few

crops that can be planted in the

open ground at this time of year.

Provided the soil is not frozen

or waterlogged, these hardy

plants do best when planted now,

coming away quickly in early

spring.

Rhubarb plants (crowns) that

have been in the same site for

several years can be broken up

with a sharp spade.

Replant pieces in heavily

manured, deeply-dug soil.

Keep autumn-sown onion seedlings

free from weeds by lightly

hoeing around the rows.

The old practice was to apply

soot to stimulate the young

plants into growth when warmer

weather returned.

The theory was that the blackened

soil surface absorbed more

sunlight warmth than lighter surfaces,

encouraging early growth.

Asparagus plants should be cut

close to the ground.

An old practice was to leave the

tops on the bed until they were

thoroughly dry.

They then were burned there,

allowing the ashes to lie on the

soil.

The idea was that, as well

as adding nutrients to the soil,

burning destroyed any ripened

seed, preventing random, inferior

asparagus plants appearing

in places where they were not

wanted.

Unfortunately, fire bylaws in

most areas mean this is no longer

possible, so the cut stems should

be removed and any berries

picked off the soil and thrown

away.

Grape hyacinths (Muscari) may be showing a few blooms. Also known as match

heads Muscari are tough bulbs that multiply rapidly in cool, reasonably well-drained

soil. As well as producing dozens of tiny bulblets around each parent, some also selfseed

if the seed heads are left to mature.

FLOWERS

Grape hyacinths (Muscari) and

the bravest snowdrops may be

showing a few blooms.

Also known as match heads

Muscari are tough bulbs that

multiply rapidly in cool, reasonably

well-drained soil.

As well as producing dozens of

tiny bulblets around each parent,

some also self-seed if the

seed heads are left to mature.

As well as the common midblue

single, there are doubles

(Blue Spike and feathered M.

comosum Plumosum), white (M.

botryoides Alba), ice-blue (Iceberg,

Barbara) and M. latifolium,

a species from Turkey that has

flowers of dark violet on the

lower two-thirds of the stem,

while the upper part is blue.

Snowdrops (Galanthus) are

also reliable, hardy early-flowering

bulbs, perfect for southern

regions, as they need cool conditions

to flower well.

There is also a double form.

Closely related to snowdrops

are snowflakes (Leucojum

aestivum), enjoying a comeback

in some parts of New

Zealand as they are easier to

grow in warmer climates than

Galanthus.

They need moist soil and tolerate

sun or shade.

There is also an autumn-flowering

species, L. autumnale and

a pink form, L. roseum, unfortunately

difficult to obtain.

FRUIT

Since the arrival of the

American gooseberry mildew in

1984, the number of gooseberry

varieties has shrunk and only

two named varieties, Invicta and

Pax, have so far proved resistant

to the mildew curse.

Grow gooseberries in an open,

sunny part of the garden where

the soil does not dry out.

Gooseberries fruit on old wood

and on last season's growth.

Prune to keep the bushes open

to let air circulate and to make

picking fruit easier.

Cut out any suckers below

ground level.

Encourage vigorous growth

by mulching with an organic

manure and a top-dressing of potash

at the rate of 50g a bush.

Small trees that are decorative

as well as useful include the mulberry,

medlar and olive.

The medlar (Mespilus germanica)

is a hardy deciduous tree

native to southeast Europe.

It will grow to about 8m, has

white flowers in spring and

brown fruit.

The fruit must be “bletted”

(allowed to half-rot) before eating.

The black mulberry (Morus

nigra) comes from western Asia.

It will grow to 10m or 12m and

has been cultivated for centuries

for its edible fruit, which looks a

little like a blackberry.

The leaves were sometimes

used for feeding silkworms,

although white mulberry (M.

alba) was preferred.

Do not grow mulberries near a

path, as fallen fruit will stain it.

Grow gooseberries in an open, sunny part of the garden where the soil does not dry out.

Prune to keep the bushes open to let air circulate and to make picking fruit easier.

Notice of Intention to Take Land

Rolleston / State Highway 1 Access Local Road

Upgrades Project, Selwyn District

NOTICE is hereby given that Selwyn District Council proposes to take,

under the Public Works Act 1981, the land described in the Schedule to

this notice (Land).

The Land is required for construction of the Rolleston / State Highway 1

Access Local Road Upgrades Project (Project). More particularly, the

Land is required for road for the Project.

The reason why Selwyn District Council considers it reasonably necessary

to take the Land is to improve the safety and efficiency of the local road

network by upgrading two key intersections in Rolleston. These include

the realignment of Two Chain Road and Jones Road, and the construction

of a new one-lane roundabout at the intersection of

Two Chain Road and Walkers Road.

The owner of the Land and those persons with a registered interest in it

have been served with notice of Selwyn District Council’s intention to take

the Land and advised of their right to object.

Any other person having the right to object may send a written objection

to the Registrar, Environment Court, Justice & Emergency Services

Precinct, 20 Lichfield Street, Christchurch, or by post to: WX11113

Christchurch, within 20 working days after the date of publication of this

notice.

If any objection is made in accordance with this notice, a public hearing

will be held with the right of the objector to appear and be heard

personally, unless the objector otherwise requires, and each objector will

be informed of the time and place of the hearing.

Any person requiring further information in respect of this advice should

contact Sarah Oakley, The Property Group Limited, Level 2, Lion House,

169 Madras Street, Christchurch Central 8011. Postal Address:

PO Box 7240, Sydenham 8240. Email: soakley@propertygroup.co.nz.

S-Cross is Suzuki’s

quiet little achiever

Motoring with Bob Nettleton

A major styling refresh three years ago

breathed new life into the ageing Suzuki

S-Cross SUV, first launched in 2012,

and it has continued to be a solid seller

on the strength of that well-executed

update.

Clever visual enhancements, including

a raised bonnet line and hexagonal

gloss piano-black grille, gave the S-Cross

a more muscular appearance than its

rather dowdy-looking predecessor.

Beneath the sharper styling, however,

it continues to use the same triedand-tested

drivetrains and chassis,

albeit with a series of updates and

refinements.

The second-generation S-Cross is

marginally larger, offering slightly more

passenger and cargo space. While the

gains are modest, they were enough

to make it the largest member of the

Suzuki family. That mantle has now

been passed to the larger e-Vitara EV,

launched here recently.

Completely new from the ground up,

the e-Vitara is one of the most important

models in Suzuki's history as its first

fully electric vehicle, heralding a new

chapter for the brand.

Built at Suzuki's state-of-the-art

plant in Gujarat, India, the e-Vitara is

already being exported to more than 100

countries and has made an encouraging

start, earning a place among the

contenders for the 2026 World Car of the

Year award.

Meanwhile, the S-Cross range has been

trimmed back to a single high-spec JLX

turbo-hybrid model, available in either

two-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive form.

The latter features Suzuki's capable

AllGrip AWD system with four selectable

drive modes operated via an easy-touse

rotary controller. For everyday

driving, Auto mode is the best option,

prioritising fuel efficiency while

automatically engaging AWD if wheel

slip is detected.

The S-Cross AWD I drove has

transitioned seamlessly to hybrid power,

centred around Suzuki's proven 1.4-litre

BoosterJet turbocharged engine. It is

now essentially a two-horse race, with

the front-wheel-drive JLX retailing for

$43,995 and the AWD version costing an

additional $2,000.

Given New Zealand's demanding

roads, varied terrain and unpredictable

weather, the AWD model is the more

compelling proposition and should also

hold its value better on the second-hand

market.

Suzuki's latest-generation

turbocharged engine remains

impressive.

Turbo lag is minimal thanks to a

compact turbocharger mounted directly

to the cylinder head.

Its 95kW of power and 235Nm of

torque provide plenty of punch on

Rating out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 7;

undulating roads, while a favourable

power-to-weight ratio keeps the S-Cross

moving smartly in both urban and openroad

driving.

The slick six-speed automatic

transmission is an excellent match for

the hybrid powertrain. Engine and

gearbox work together seamlessly,

making the S-Cross one of the betterdriving

compact SUVs in its class.

Front occupants benefit from a

generous 929mm of legroom, while rear

passengers enjoy 814mm — more than

respectable for a compact SUV. Boot

capacity is up to 440 litres with the 60:40

split-folding rear seats in place.

The test vehicle was fitted with

Suzuki's upgraded 360-degree camera

system. Four cameras feed images

to the nine-inch display, providing a

comprehensive view of the vehicle's

surroundings, including a useful 3D

view before setting off.

The JLX also includes wireless Apple

CarPlay, Android Auto and voice

recognition. A rear cross-traffic alert

system proves particularly useful when

reversing out of parking spaces with

restricted visibility.

The robust suspension is well suited

to New Zealand's challenging roads and

increasingly unpredictable weather.

Ride comfort is generally good,

although over heavily potholed and

rutted surfaces the S-Cross can lose

some composure and become noticeably

noisier.

Comfort appears to have been

prioritised over outright grip and

handling sharpness.

Its handling remains competent and

well balanced, reacting quickly to road

imperfections and surface disruptions.

However, at higher speeds over

undulating roads and through tighter

corners, the S-Cross begins to feel

slightly outside its comfort zone,

encouraging a more measured pace on

winding roads.

Browsing show homes is a fantastic

way to get you thinking about practicalities,

needs, aesthetics and your wish list!

Here are a few consideration’s to help

spark your planning process.

• What is your exterior style? What kind

of homes do you like? Look around

and take a mental note of what you

are drawn to most.

• What kind of exterior materials do

you like? Once you’ve worked out the

look you like, research what materials

are available and find out about

durability.

• How will you use your house? It’s

important to most people to have a

good indoor/outdoor flow and attractive,

sheltered outdoor living. Imagine

your home in various seasons.

• Landscaping is important. Look around

and consider what you like and don’t

like. Are you a structured formal

garden type or do you like a contemporary

native style?

• Sustainability and future-proofing

aren’t just buzzwords anymore. It’s

very important for your new home to

be environmentally friendly. Research

insulation requirements, solar hot

water heating, ventilation options and

new technology to ensure your home

will be affordable to run.

• Interior décor is really exciting. This is

where show homes can really help you

get to know current trends, colours,

beautiful furnishings and furniture.

Collect home magazines and figure out

what you’d love to emulate.

• Also, pause to give thought to architectural

components inside. Do you

remember a raised ceiling? What kind

of finishing do top homes use and

which styles are you drawn to?

• Heating is also a consideration. Have a

look at what show homes are offering.

• Kitchens form the heart of the house.

Show homes give you insight into the

latest styles, materials and storage

facilities available.

• Bathrooms are another big component.

They need to be as luxurious as you

can make them, so start dreaming.

Nigel Barbour

The Orion Group Chief Executive

The decisions we make about our electricity

network now will shape the lives of the people

who live and work here for decades to come.

Everything we do is shaped by the environment

we’re operating in. Orion has a safe and reliable

network, but many of our assets are getting

older and will need replacing over time. At the

same time, Selwyn and Ōtautahi Christchurch

are growing much faster than the rest of

Aotearoa New Zealand, with Selwyn’s population

expected to more than double by 2055.

We also live in a place where earthquakes

are a reality, and severe weather events are

becoming more frequent and intense. On top of

this, more people are electrifying their homes,

businesses, and transport, and adding solar

and batteries, a shift we strongly support.

Together, these changes are putting increasing

pressure on a network that wasn’t originally

designed for this level of demand.

Customers have consistently told us that

safety, reliability, and resilience matter most.

You also support investment in the transition

to a low-emissions future and expect us to use

smarter systems and technology to run the

network efficiently. These priorities are reflected

in the investments we’re planning. I’d like to

sincerely thank everyone who has provided

feedback on our plan, your input has helped us

to shape our region’s energy future.

We’ve also heard clearly that affordability is

a major concern, especially with wider costof-living

pressures. We’ve taken this on board

and shaped our investment plan to carefully

manage risk, keep the power on, and help keep

electricity affordable, now and into the future.

We recently applied to the Commerce

Commission for a customised price-quality

path (CPP), which will allow us to increase

investment in the network. It’s important to

remember that a larger investment programme

does not mean an unconstrained one. We’ve

had to carefully justify every part of our

investment plan and show that it’s the minimum

needed to meet customers’ needs. We’ve also

looked at alternatives to traditional network

investment where they offer better value, and

our cost estimates have been independently

reviewed. The plan now will be rigorously

assessed by the Commerce Commission before

they make a final decision.

We’re confident this investment plan is

sensible, well thought through, and focused on

delivering good outcomes for our communities.

INVESTMENT:

Investing in

tomorrow, today

What is a customised

price-quality path?

We’ve applied for a customised pricequality

path for the period between 01

April 2027 and 31 March 2032. Over this

five-year CPP period, we plan to invest

a total of $1.51 billion in the electricity

network, comprising $932 million in

capital expenditure and $578 million in

operating expenditure. This is around

$260 million more than under a default

price-quality path.

Our capital expenditure focuses on

increased asset renewals, targeted

resilience programmes, and network

upgrades to keep pace with forecast

growth in population and peak demand.

The increase in operating expenditure

will support increased maintenance

activity, expanded vegetation

management, and enhanced capability

to manage a more complex and dynamic

electricity network.

These investments are focused on

maintaining current service levels while

positioning the network to meet future

needs. Delaying this investment would

increase total costs over time, leading to

greater future price impacts and poorer

outcomes for customers and our region.

The Commerce Commission regulates the

revenue we can earn from lines charges, and

the service quality we provide, through a

default price-quality path.

We currently face a unique set of challenges

and opportunities, and if we stay on the

default path, we won’t recover enough

revenue to make the investments needed to

avoid deteriorating network performance and

higher costs in the future.

A customised price-quality path allows

electricity distributors, like Orion, to apply

to the Commerce Commission for different

revenue limits to meet the specific needs of

our customers and network.

oriongroup.co.nz

What you told us

Over the past eighteen months, we’ve worked

closely with customers, stakeholders, and our

community to shape an investment plan that

reflects what matters most to you.

Through consultation, surveys, community workshops, and

conversations, you’ve consistently told us you want a network that

is safe, reliable, and resilient, one that can support growth and is

ready for the future. You’ve also been clear that affordability is

a priority, and that any investment must be carefully considered,

efficient, and well justified.

Here’s what we heard:

• Safety and reliability come first – a safe and reliable power

supply is essential. Most customers are satisfied with current

levels of reliability and want us to maintain these, rather than pay

more for higher performance.

• Support for growth, at the right pace – you expect the network

to keep up with population growth and increasing electricity

demand. However, there is a preference to time investment

carefully, avoiding both overbuilding and underinvestment.

• Resilience matters – given the risks we face, particularly from

earthquakes and severe weather, resilience is highly valued.

Customers support targeted resilience investment where it

delivers clear benefits, such as reducing outage risk and speeding

up restoration.

• A flexible approach to the future – you recognise the need to

prepare for a changing energy future, but prefer a strategic

and considered approach, supporting innovation and new

technologies where they deliver clear value, while avoiding over

commitment to uncertain solutions.

• Efficiency and good service – you expect us to run our network

and business efficiently, make prudent investment decisions, and

provide a responsive service, so we can deliver better outcomes

and keep costs down.

Your feedback has directly shaped our investment plan.

We’ve adjusted the scope, timing and trade-offs in response to what

you told us. This has resulted in a reduction in planned investment

from $1.73 billion in our 2025 Asset Management Plan Update, to

$1.615 billion in our draft plan, and $1.51 billion in our final plan.

This helps limit future cost increases while continuing to focus on the

safe, reliable and resilient network you’ve told us you value most.

What a CPP means for customers

Next steps

The benefits you can expect from increased investment include

sustained levels of safety and reliability, a more resilient

network, increased network capacity to support growth,

and a network that is future-fit and continues to support the

decarbonisation of our region.

A customised price-quality path will mean an increase in lines

charges. Once the Commerce Commission has determined

our final investment plan, we can then set lines charges for the

CPP period.

As your electricity bill reflects the cost of all parts of the

electricity supply chain, and electricity retailers determine

how lines charges are included in your bill, we cannot

accurately forecast total customer bills as a result of our

investment plan. However, we expect that the lines charge

increase for typical residential or small business customers

will be on average around $4 per month higher under a

customised price-quality path.

We’ve submitted our application for a customised pricequality

path to the Commerce Commission.

They will now check it for compliance and then review it

in detail, including seeking feedback from customers and

stakeholders. As part of this process, they will assess

whether our proposed investments are prudent, efficient,

and in the best long-term interests of customers.

The final decision may differ from what we’ve proposed. The

Commission will set the customised price-quality path, which

determines how much revenue we can earn over the fiveyear

period. This will be reflected in customers’ power bills

from 1 April 2027.

You can find out more about our customised price-quality

path application at www.oriongroup.co.nz/your-energyfuture/customised-path

Rural confidence returns

as Property Brokers settles

$684 million in farm sales

Property Brokers is celebrating one of the most significant settlement

periods in its history, completing 128 rural property settlements worth more

than $684 million between 28 May and 5 June 2026.

The milestone reflects the strength of New Zealand’s

rural property market and growing confidence

throughout the country’s primary sector, with activity

levels reaching heights not seen for many years.

Of the 128 settlements completed nationally, 81 were

dairy farms, accounting for $555 million in transactions

and delivering a median sale price of $5.5 million. Across

all rural property types, including dairy, grazing, finishing

and mixed farming operations, the median sale price

was $3.85 million.

Canterbury played a significant role in this result,

contributing 24 settlements with a combined value

of $180,257,074. Dairy farms continued to lead the

market, with 16 Canterbury dairy farm settlements

totalling $161,487,074.

Property Brokers Canterbury Rural Manager Gareth Cox

says the results are a reflection of renewed confidence,

strong buyer demand and the enduring appeal of

quality farming assets.

“These results reflect the trust placed in our

business by farming families across the country.

Our people understand rural New Zealand because

they live it every day. We combine local specialist

expertise with national reach and scale, and that’s

proving incredibly powerful in today’s market.”

The settlements span the length of the country and

have generally progressed smoothly, supported by

favourable seasonal conditions, robust sale and purchase

agreements, and strong collaboration between Property

Brokers’ rural teams and the wider network of rural

professionals involved in each transaction.

A key driver behind the company’s success continues to

be its collaborative approach.

“Our Property Brokers rural model is built around

collaboration. Our rural agents work together

across regions to connect buyers and sellers and

achieve premium outcomes. The results we’re

seeing are a clear signal of long-term confidence in

New Zealand’s primary industries.”

Demand remains particularly strong for quality farming

businesses, with well-presented properties featuring

sound production fundamentals continuing to attract

significant buyer interest.

The strong settlement figures coincide with improving

conditions across the wider rural economy. Higher

commodity prices particularly across dairy and red meat

sectors, lower interest rates, improving farm profitability

and stronger overall sentiment are all contributing to

increased market activity.

Just twelve months ago many farming businesses

were focused on managing uncertainty. Today, the

conversation has shifted toward opportunity, growth

and investment.

There is renewed energy across the sector as farmers

look ahead with confidence, businesses invest in growth

and rural communities benefit from improving economic

conditions.

The strength of the rural property market extends well

beyond individual farm transactions. Strong farming

businesses support local contractors, service providers,

rural professionals and provincial communities

throughout New Zealand.

For Canterbury, the message is clear: buyer confidence

has returned, quality rural assets continue to attract

strong demand, and the region remains one of New

Zealand’s most active and highly sought-after rural

property markets.

With market conditions continuing to improve and

renewed optimism across the primary sector, now is an

excellent time to understand where your property sits in

the current market.
