Pupils access porn

at school using AI

Primary school security

systems appear unable to

stop pupils searching for

inappropriate images through

artificial intelligence.

The mother of a 9-year-old

said her son and a classmate

at a Christchurch school were

able to bypass computer security

and download images of

naked women by using AI.

“He was caught by his

teacher walking behind him

who saw him accessing inappropriate

images. The school

emailed me to let me know

and he got stood down from

using devices for a week,” she

said.

The school says blocking

inappropriate material is

being thwarted by quickly

evolving AI.

The Star has chosen not to

identify the school.

The school’s acting principal

confirmed the child had used

the internet to “search up

inappropriate images”.

“A child did use the internet

to search up inappropriate

images but through our

ministry-provided security

system we realised what

happened and immediately

triggered our systems to

ensure student wellbeing was

protected.

Car thieves may be using

overseas tactics to steal vehicles

by attaching tracking devices to

them.

A motorist believes he was targeted

after discovering a tracking

device had been placed on the

underside of his 2007 Volkswagen

Golf GTI.

He is unsure whether it was

attached while he was waiting for

an order at a New Brighton fish

and chip shop, or at another time.

He was alerted to the device

after receiving a notification on

his iPhone from Apple’s Find My

app, warning that an unknown

device had been detected moving

with him.

A map showed the device’s

movements, including a location

outside his home.

Using his phone, he made the

device emit a beeping sound,

which led him to discover a

HiTag stuck underneath his car.

Safeguards under strain as pupils bypass filters

children and all the parents

involved about device.

“With inappropriate images,

it will block certain aspects

and send alerts to team staff

members.”

But he conceded due to the

quick evolving nature of generative

AI the security system was

not foolproof.

“Children are always trying to

work around these things and it

is our job to teach them how to

manage themselves,” he said.

The mother said she understands

that with the new AI

tech it is very difficult for the

school to police. But she was

concerned school security systems

could not consistently

pick up breaches.

“I have three boys and we

always have conversations

when this arises but this [AI] is

a new fear unlocked,” she said.

Ministry of Education

spokeswoman Coralanne Child

said the school had advised it

“of an incident and confirmed

that they are

managing it in

accordance with

their processes.

Digital Harm and Exploitation

Bill heads to Parliament’s

Social Services and Community

Committee. Public submissions

are open until tomorrow.

A key part of the Bill is the

issue of using AI to create

sexualised deep fake, and laws

around it.

senior law lecturer Cassandra

Mudgway said making

the creation of sexualised

deepfakes illegal is not enough.

“If New Zealand wants to

meaningfully address imagebased

sexual abuse in the age

of generative AI, we have to go

further than criminalising it,”

she said.

Netsafe said that AI tools

like Grok on X can create fake

images of people without

consent.

“In New Zealand, harmful

digital communications

are actionable, whether

real or manipulated,

under the Harmful Digital

Communications Act.”

An ending unfit for a King

The body of a dog hit and

killed by a vehicle was placed

in a skip by a New Zealand

Transport Agency contractor

called out to recover it.

NZTA has now told its

contractors to handle incidents

involving deceased animals

with greater sensitivity and

care.

NZTA maintenance and

operations area manager

Mark Pinner said the correct

procedure was to identify

the dog and contact the local

council’s animal services team

so the owner could be located.

The incident came to light

after the dog’s owner posted

about it on Facebook.

King, a Staffordshire cross,

was hit and killed on Tunnel

Rd near Ferry Rd in late April

after going missing from his

property. A member of the

public moved the dog off the

road and reported the incident.

Tunnel Rd is a state highway

under NZTA jurisdiction.

The agency dispatched

Downer New Zealand,

its contractor for North

Canterbury – which includes

Christchurch – to recover King’s

body.

The worker who collected

King transported the body to

Downer’s Harewood yard and

contacted a supervisor for

instructions on what to do next.

NZTA said the supervisor

instructed the worker to place

the body in an Envirowaste

skip.

“This instruction was wrong,”

Pinner said.

He said Downer crews were

expected to check for a collar or

microchip and contact the local

council’s animal services team so

the owner could be identified and

notified.

Pinner said those steps were

not followed on this occasion, and

King’s body was later compacted

and sent to landfill as waste.

In his Facebook post, King’s

owner said he “has no words”

and was in “disbelief” after

learning what had happened.

He has since received an apology,

and “several steps are being

taken to make sure this never

happens again,” Pinner said.

In the week after King went

missing, his owner was actively

searching and posting daily on

social media, and had also made

contact with Downer.

Pinner said the Downer supervisor

who gave the instruction

to place the dog in the skip contacted

the owner two days later,

took full responsibility, and

apologised.

Following changes to NZTA’s

state highway maintenance

contracts in May, Downer is no

longer the contractor for the

North Canterbury region.

debt kept private

Crusaders and All Blacks

rugby great Andrew Mehrtens

has succeeded in keeping the

amount he owes a Christchurch

law firm secret. He has been

fighting a bankruptcy case in

the High Court since last month,

brought by law firm Saunders

Robinson Brown. A judge said

both parties should be able to

resolve the matter without undue

public scrutiny. Merhtens argued

it would cause irreversible

reputational harm if his debt was

public.

over NPD sites

Night ’n Day will run its stores at

NPD sites in Yaldhurst, Moorhouse

Ave and Rolleston. This

will increase Night ’n Day’s network

to 60-plus stores. Some of

NPD’s successful food service

concepts would be retained

while Night ’n Day gradually

introduces its offerings.

Hedge fire

leads sought

Police are urging anyone who

may know more about a large

hedge fire next to Lincoln

University on King’s Birthday to

come forward. Fire crews found

piles of cans and bottles, as well

as camping chairs, near where

the fire started. A police spokesperson

said currently there are

no lines of inquiry. Anyone with

information should call 105, and

use number 260601/2010.

Highs and lows of a 45-year

With more than 15

establishments under

his belt, publican Marty

Fuller has seen it all.

Prominent publican Marty

Fuller has bowed out of the

industry after 45 years.

Fuller has been running

the Elmwood Trading Co on

Normans Rd in Strowan with

wife Naomi for about eight

years.

“I think I was always destined

to get into pubs,” Fuller says as

he sits in the recently sold pub.

“But I don't want to be doing

it when I'm 82.

“I'm 72, [my wife Naomi is]

a wee bit younger, so together

we've collectively clocked up

100 years in ‘hospo’.

"I'm just pleased that I've

been able to make a success of

it, because a lot of people don't.

It's a tough business. It's not all

beer and skittles.”

Some of those tough moments

for Fuller have been at the

mercy of the market, others

have been with liquor licensing

authorities.

When Fuller is reminded

of one scandal – the ‘how far

will you go’ contest at Trader

McKendry’s on the corner of

Cashel and Manchester Sts in

1997 – he laughs.

and then set it on fire. But it all

came back on Fuller.

"We started this promotion.

How far will you go to win

$1000? Which was $500 cash

and a $500 bar tab.

“One entry was a guy called

Thomas. He got a table and

he pulled out his scrotum and

he stapled his scrotum to this

table in the bar, all up on stage,

stapled it. Everyone went, ‘wow,

well that's pretty interesting’.

“That was just the semi-final.

“And then the final. Thomas's

act was that he'd got a

cardboard crucifix made, this

reasonable-sized cardboard

crucifix, and again he – I don't

know how many industrial

strength staples he put through

his scrotum – stapled his

whatever to this cardboard

cross and then put cigarette

lighter accelerant on and set it

on fire.

“That was pretty spectacular,

if you like, but where it turned

pear-shaped was that his

girlfriend, who was alert to

what was happening, had a

little portable fire extinguisher

which she was meant to

immediately use to put the

flames down. But it didn't work.

“So he's got this flaming

inferno and ended up in

hospital with third degree

burns to his scrotum. Anyway,

Thomas won.”

Fuller said was “slated”

by media and criticised

about whether the event was

appropriate. The Alcohol

Regulatory & Licensing

Authority became involved and

as a result he ended up being

forced to close his doors for two

weeks.

“But, you know, it happens.

You're always going to have a

few things go a bit wrong. But if

you've only had a couple over

45 years, you're probably doing

okay.”

He credits his father, an

accountant, for introducing

him to hospitality and business.

Fuller tagged along with his dad

as a boy when he would go in to

assess hotel finances.

“That smell when you walk

into those bars, it's almost like

an aphrodisiac, and I've always

loved that. As disgusting as

it sounds, I always loved that

smell.”

His first job came during

university in Wellington, as a

barman at Barrett’s Hotel on

Lambton Quay. After some

overseas travel, he returned

to Christchurch to work at

career in the bar industry

partner and former All Black

Fergie McCormick. The pair

then took out the lease for The

Cantabrian. Fuller, meanwhile,

had started Vines Wine Bar on

Hereford St. He then bought the

building that The Cantabrian

was in and reopened it as

Trader McKendry’s on the

north-east corner of Cashel and

Manchester Sts.

Fuller had also entered

into business with his future

wife Naomi, buying the

Grapes Wine Bar on

Gloucester St and turning it

into The Bard.

Joined by Kiwis prop Brent

Todd, Fuller launched Sneakers

Sports Cafe on Manchester St.

He then took over Rattlesnakes

with Max Bremner, turning it

into The Bog, along with the

Rose and Thistle in Papanui,

and The Clock Bar in Hornby.

Next he bought Trevinos

in Riccarton with Grant

McWhirter. Another

opportunity came knocking for

Fuller to buy The Door, which

he turned into The Craic Irish

Bar. Then the 2010 and 2011

earthquakes hit, cutting out

the competition in the central

city and causing his business go

“crazy”.

But it is The Elmwood Trading

Co which Fuller is most proud

of. A friend encouraged him to

buy it.

“I came down here one day

with my mate and had a beer,

and I looked around and I knew

half the people in here already,

mates of mine, and I could see

some potential.

“Anyway, long story is that it's

been a fantastic success.”

Fuller credits the food

selection as a driver behind the

success of his establishments, as

well as his affability and skills

as a “mine host”.

He got ideas from overseas

and turned dining in

Christchurch on its head.

“In those early years, 45

years ago, for a lot of pubs, the

food consisted of a pie warmer.

That was it. But now the food

offerings in pubs is fantastic,

and we've done that.

“The consumer has been the

winner, because of the choice

and the quality, the quality of

the food, and especially the

range of drinks. When I started

at Barrett's, there was Lion

Brown and Lion Super. Two

beers on tap. That was it.

"And, honestly, it’s that good

old-fashioned mine hosting.

Once people walk through the

door, look after them. I always

say to my staff, love your

customers, because if you don't,

the guy down the road will.”

Fuller is a life member

of Hospitality New Zealand

and Naomi recently became

the first woman to be made

a lifetime member of the

group’s Canterbury branch. In

retirement he said “there'll be a

little bit more travel”.

“We've got two daughters

who live in Australia, so

might spend a bit of time over

there,” he says. And, after

spending his career giving his

financial backing to a number

of community sports groups,

Fuller wants to continue taking

rugby tours, with a trip to South

Africa booked for August.

“We'll follow a bit of rugby

still. And I play a very, very bad

game of golf. So instead of just

Wednesday afternoon I might

try and play very bad golf twice

a week.

“If I'm bored, I'll just come

down to The Elmwood and have

a beer.”

Highway rethink

could transform

‘bisected’ suburb

A future Hornby growth plan

could pave the way for a major

change – shifting State

Highway 1 out of the heart

of the community.

The city council is in

the early stages of preparing

the Hornby Local

Area Plan, covering

suburbs from Templeton

to the airport. The

area has been identified

for housing growth and

future infrastructure

investment.

About 29,000 vehicles

use the section of SH1

each day, a city council

spokeswoman said – a

15% increase on 2025.

NZ Transport Agency

Waka Kotahi said congestion

is causing delays,

creating safety risks for

cyclists and pedestrians,

and will worsen if no action is

taken.

Hornby Ward councillor Mark

Peters said SH1 “effectively cuts

the community in half”.

“Through this process we

could potentially start seriously

planning the diversion of the

problematic State Highway 1

“In doing that, we may be

able to reclaim the heart of our

area to be a more friendly

and inviting place.”

Peters said he was

aware of long-standing

proposals to shift SH1

onto Ryans and Pound

thought about for many

years. Seeing those actually

start to materialise

through this process

would be really big.”

He said residents were

“frustrated with the heart

of Hornby being bisected

by the highway” and

described the road as

“an incredibly dangerous

animal”.

chairman Marc Duff agreed the

highway was a major barrier

within the community.

“It has a massive impact on

people trying to move around in

their own local community,” he

said.

“The big issues around Hornby

are because of the amount of

State Highway 1 through Hornby is often packed with traffic, causing major delays and making it unappealing for walkers

and cyclists, authorities say.

Both Duff and Peters raised

concerns about the lack of a

pedestrian crossing between

Woolworths and The Hub

Hornby.

The Hub centre manager Jason

Marsden said pedestrian and

cycle access was his top concern.

“All of those people, young parents

of babies and elderly who

have mobility issues, if they want

to access the likes of the Harvey

Norman Centre, it’s really

difficult to get across what is

probably one of the three busiest

intersections in Christchurch,”

he said.

“It’s probably the least pedestrian-friendly

intersection in the

city.”

However, Marsden said

diverting SH1 was unnecessary.

“I don’t have a problem with

the vehicle situation. All big cities

have high volume roadways,

and we’re at a very prominent

location here. That’s just the

nature of the area.

“Where I think focus should

be, and it seems to be getting

traction now, is around that

pedestrian interchange,” he said.

The city council said any plan

for Hornby would try to meet its

overarching goals “for climate

change, transport efficiency, and

the urban forest”.

No horsing around with Big Al’s reviews

Amateur food critic Alan ‘Big Al’

Parsons has built a loyal online

following with blunt, unfiltered

reviews of pies, burgers, fish and

chips, takeaway meals and other

convenience foods.

“I don’t really claim to be a professional

in any sense. I’m just an

amateur food reviewer,” he said.

But behind the online persona,

his fast-food content has come

with a personal cost.

Parsons weighed 146kg when

he was diagnosed with Type 2

diabetes in 2022.

Over 18 months, he lost more

than 30kg, but now lives with

type 3c diabetes following surgery

on his pancreas.

Despite that, the 43-year-old

self-confessed foodie said he has

no intention of slowing down.

“A lot of people think pies and

burgers are all I eat. I do eat a

much healthier diet when I’m not

on camera,” he said.

Parsons now weighs about

100kg and balances his diet by

limiting junk food, exercising regularly

– particularly after meals

– and boosting his nutrition with

vegetables, high-protein meals,

and smoothies made from spinach,

berries and banana.

He began reviewing pies in

2020 but has since expanded to a

wide range of different foods and

drinks.

The part-time security guard

and former trainee chef has

built a Facebook following of

about 8400 over six years, making

him a ‘nano-influencer’ – a

term for creators with roughly

1000-10,000 followers, typically

focused on a niche audience.

Asked about his worst food

review, Parsons didn’t hesitate.

“An Angus pie with black garlic.

I thought it would be nice,

but I took one bite and threw

it in the bin. It was disgusting,”

he said.

The best is harder to choose.

“That’s a tricky one. I’ve been

doing this for a few years now

and I’ve had a lot of good stuff.”

He aims to post at least one

review a week, depending on

budget.

“I don’t really make any money

out of it, but sometimes I get free

stuff to review.”

His reviews regularly spark

debate online – none more so

than a horse meat pie from Auckland’s

Pakuranga Bakehouse,

which became one of the country’s

most talked-about pastries.

The bakery’s manager, Pho Bok

said the $9 pie was inspired by

the Tongan dish lo’i hoosi and

uses slow-cooked horse meat in a

coconut-based filling.

He said the meat is sourced

from the country’s only registered

horse meat processor

and is approved for human

consumption.

“People come from all over to

try them,” Bok said.

“The pies are racing out the

door.”

Parsons gave the pie 8.5/10.

“It was really good, very nice.

I can see why it’s so popular,” he

said.

“The coconut milk and onions

make for a unique flavour.

“Well worth trying if you live

or travel north.”

Reaction online was mixed.

“That’s a neigh from me,” said

David Roulston.

However, Sean Pleasants

offered a warning: “You can’t eat

too many or you’ll end up with

the trots…”

Parsons plans to continue his

reviews and hopes to eventually

monetise his page through advertising

and merchandise.

For now, he’s taking viewer

suggestions and planning his next

culinary road trips to Darfield

and Prebbleton – still chasing his

next standout bite.

The motorist said his “heart

literally sank” when he found it,

adding he felt his privacy had

been breached and his safety

net compromised.

A HiTag is similar to an Apple

AirTag in the way it’s designed

for lost-item tracking, such as

for keys.

He said the device was well

hidden. He needed to “really

feel around to find it”.

The motorist is now warning

other people to be vigilant

about where they park their car.

He reported the matter to the

police and has given the device

to them.

Police did not respond to

questions from The Star if they

are aware of a trend for car

thieves using tracker devices to

monitor vehicles.

In Canada, there is growing

concern about thieves using

similar devices to target

vehicles.

In a recent case in Calgary,

thieves allegedly hid a small

GPS tracker behind a woman’s

windshield wipers before later

attempting to steal her SUV.

Struggle of Sleep After 60

Alison had been struggling with

a problem shared by many Kiwis

over 60.

”I’ve never been one to sit

still,” she laughs. “There’s always

something happening, someone to

see.”

If she’s not down at her local

pool, Alison can often be seen

briskly walking around the park

with friends. The 64-year-old

has always been active. First to

organise a coffee catch-up, last to

leave a dinner party, the one who

remembers everyone’s birthday.

But lately, Alison was quietly

struggling with sleep. Her energy

would dip after a poor night,

leaving her exhausted, more than

Sir Hamish’s

house back

on the market

A heritage-listed house once

owned by Sir Hamish Hay is up

for sale “as is, where is”.

The owners of 70 Heaton St,

Merivale, had been in the midst

of restoring the mansion, but

Bayleys listing agents Jackie

Derrick and Richard Green told

OneRoof a change of circumstances

meant they were unable

to complete the project.

The two-storey, five-bedroom,

four-bathroom property is

steeped in history. It was built in

the early 1920s for philanthropist

and businessman Robert Ewing

McDougall, with the design by

prestigious architecture firm the

England Brothers.

Sir Hamish, served five terms

as mayor from 1974-1989.

He purchased the property

in 1961 and lived there with his

family for about 40 years. He sold

the property prior to his death in

2008.

The house was one of a number

of substantial architecturallydesigned

homes built in Heaton

St after it was subdivided in

1914-1919 from former politician

Robert Heaton Rhodes’ estate.

Derrick told OneRoof the sale

was a fantastic opportunity for

somebody wanting to reinvigorate

a piece of Christchurch’s

expect the sale price to be much

From printing presses to pickleball paddles

A 132-year-old family business

has turned the final page on its

printing past and is serving up a

new future – pickleball.

ClubPickle has opened on

Carlyle St in Sydenham, transforming

the former McHargs

bookbinding and print finishing

factory into the city’s first dedicated

indoor pickleball facility.

Brothers Johnny and Tim

McHarg, fourth-generation

owners of McHargs, have converted

the historic site into a

sporting venue complete with

a mezzanine viewing area,

licensed bar and pizzeria, and a

pro shop.

“It was sad, but had to be

done,” said Tim McHarg.

“Things got a little bit tough

with our printing business, so

we decided to close it up after

132 years and get into something

different,” he said.

McHargs, founded in 1893 by

Samuel Irving McHarg – Tim

and Johnny’s great-grandfather

– closed its doors in December

last year.

It was the last recognised

print finisher in Christchurch.

The family sold off the

machinery but retained ownership

of the building.

Johnny McHarg said the new

venture was built on a shared

family passion for pickleball.

Pickleball is played with solid

paddles and combines elements

of tennis, badminton and table

tennis. It has surged in popularity

in recent years.

The bookbinding business was founded

on Manchester St by Samuel Irvine

McHarg in 1893.

“It draws in all those sports,

and at the moment it’s bringing

in a lot of people who are getting

back into sport,” he said.

The city’s first purpose-built

indoor pickleball facility features

four indoor courts surfaced in

Plexipave, designed specifically

for the rapidly growing sport.

The new venue offers social

play, competitive leagues and

structured coaching for adults

and juniors, alongside corporate

and community events.

A “Cardio Pickle” programme

adds a fitness-focused twist to the

game.

Soldier’s bravery under fire earns

recognition from a grateful nation

A retired New Zealand Defence

Force veteran who helped

steer East Timor through its

violent path to independence

has received one of the nation’s

highest honours. He spoke to

Geoff Sloan

Twenty-six years ago, then-

Colonel Neville Reilly drove

5km through militia-controlled

streets in East Timor to rescue

a colleague trapped in a house

under fire.

That act, and his leadership of

the United Nations Mission in East

Timor (UNAMET) during one of

the bloodiest phases of the country’s

transition to independence,

has now been formally recognised

with the Medal of the Order

of Timor-Leste.

Last month, President José

Ramos-Horta presented Reilly

(now retired with the rank of

brigadier) with the honour, recognising

his courage and leadership

during the 1999 crisis.

“It felt great. A real honour, and

very unexpected,” he said.

Former Police Superintendent

Ray Sutton, of Rotorua, who

commanded the police civilian

contingent, also received

the honour.

Reilly said the delayed

recognition reflected a view

within Timor-Leste that

personnel involved with

UNAMET had not received

the same acknowledgement

as those who arrived later

with the International Force

East Timor (INTERFET).

The man Reilly rescued, nowretired

Colonel Ray Seymour, said

the honour was well deserved.

For Reilly, 77, the award

brought back memories of four

turbulent months overseeing

security for a historic referendum

that asked East Timorese voters

whether they wished to remain

part of Indonesia or become

independent.

From his UN compound in the

capital, Dili, Reilly kept constant

tabs on 50 international military

liaison officers spread across the

mountainous country.

At 9am on September 4, 1999,

the referendum result was

announced.

An overwhelming 78.5%

of voters had chosen

independence.

Within hours, East Timor

descended into chaos as pro-

Indonesian militia groups took

up arms and began looting.

When the violence erupted,

the United Nations asked Reilly

to assume command of the mission’s

security.

“He was running around like

a blue-arsed chook,” Seymour

said.

During the crisis,

Reilly repeatedly ventured

unarmed into

militia-controlled areas

to assist stranded UN

personnel and identify

evacuation routes.

“It was just a pretty

intimidating situation

with anarchy on the

streets and various militia

just doing crazy things. It was

a bit hairy,” Reilly said.

One of his boldest missions

saw him rescue former army

colleague Seymour, who was

trapped in a house which had

been used by New Zealand

diplomats while militia forces

attacked the property.

He had been serving as a military

intelligence operative and

Defence Attaché for the New

Zealand Embassy.

“I'd been asked to stay behind

and keep a close eye on developments

and write intelligence

reports for the UN,” he said.

As violence escalated, Reilly

phoned Seymour’s landline

– which could only receive

incoming calls – and urged him

to leave because the situation

was turning ugly.

Seymour decided to stay and

finish his report.

“As soon as I put the phone

down, there was firing into my

house,” he said.

“I thought the next time

they fired, they would smash

the door down and I would be

turned into mince meat.”

As the gunfire intensified,

Seymour destroyed his notes

and intelligence reports.

“I didn't want to be found as a

spy,” he said.

Completely unarmed, he took

cover in a stone bathtub.

“It was cold.”

After failing to hear from

Seymour, Reilly gathered

several men the following

morning and drove an

unarmoured UN Land Rover

through hostile territory to

reach him.

“The firing overnight had

“It was just a pretty

intimidating situation with

anarchy on the streets

and various militia just

doing crazy things. It was

a bit hairy.”

stopped. They obviously got

tired and went home to bed,”

Seymour said.

“In the morning I got up,

checked that I was still alive,

then all of a sudden heard

somebody scream out my name.

It was Neville.

“He was yelling, ‘get out, get

out Ray’.

“I grabbed my bag and made

a run for it.”

The old comrades were

relieved to see each other.

“I probably kissed him, I don't

know. We didn't have time to

talk,” Seymour said.

“I was thrown out of the

vehicle at the airport. It was

chaos, he couldn't afford to

stop,” he said.

Seymour managed to board

the last flight out of Dili.

“When I got back to my flat in

Jakarta, the phone was going.

The a***hole on the other end

was going, ‘where’s the report,

where’s the report?’

“I burnt the b*stard.”

Reilly’s calm leadership later

proved crucial during the siege

of the UN compound in Dili,

where thousands of frightened

East Timorese sought refuge

alongside UN staff.

Using his diplomacy and

Indonesian language skills,

he helped negotiate the safe

evacuation of about 2000 people

from the besieged compound.

His actions that day earned

him New Zealand’s secondhighest

military decoration, the

New Zealand Gallantry Star.

East Timor was just one

chapter in a distinguished

39-year military career that

also included service with the

United Nations Protection Force

during the Bosnian War.

Reilly later commanded

the 3rd Land Force Group

at Burnham Military Camp

and, in 2003, led a Provincial

Reconstruction Team of

more than 50 personnel from

Burnham to Afghanistan.

He retired from the army in

2009 with the rank of Brigadier,

but returned to Afghanistan the

following year as New Zealand’s

ambassador.

He later served as

regional manager and group

controller for the Canterbury

Civil Defence Emergency

Management Group from 2011

until his retirement in 2021.

He was immediately

immersed in the Christchurch

earthquake recovery effort.

“The experience of those

earthquakes really gave an

impetus to improving our

capability,” he said.

He co-ordinated the regional

response to the 2016 Kaikōura

earthquake, overseeing

complex logistics to support

isolated communities and

restore critical South Island

transport links.

A year later, he led the

Civil Defence response to the

devastating Port Hills wildfires,

which threatened homes and

forced widespread evacuations.

Today, Reilly and his wife

Pauline are enjoying a slower

pace of life.

“I’m just enjoying life in a

re-energised Christchurch.”

Battle with cancer can’t stop

When West Melton front-rower

Blair Colombus was diagnosed

with cancer two years ago, one

item immediately went on his

to-do list: reach 100 division one

games.

On Saturday, the 45-yearold

will bring up the milestone

when West Melton hosts

Hurunui in their final combined

country match of the season.

Colombus was left stranded on

94 games after being diagnosed

with stage-three bowel cancer

in June 2024. The cancer has

since progressed to stage four,

but he returned to the team

determined to reach 100 games.

“It’s been something I’ve been

looking forward to, I missed

running out with the guys and

playing a bit of rugby,” he said.

“I’ve missed celebrating the

wins and going through the

losses with the team.”

Saturday’s match will also

be Colombus’ last for the

foreseeable future. He begins

a new treatment regime

next week that requires a

chemotherapy port to be fitted

in his chest, meaning he will no

longer be able to play.

“They wanted to do it this

week, and I said, sorry, I’ve got

an appointment on Saturday, I

need to be well for it, it’s a big

one.

“So they deferred things, and

Monday morning, I go and get

my port put in.”

Billy Young died before he was

born, and Billy’s brother Robert

died when Colombus was a child.

“It was always on my to-do list

(to get checked), I just didn’t realise

I was going to be this young

having to do it,” he said.

“But I’m glad I did go and get

checked, it could have been a lot

worse. When I was diagnosed,

it was stage three, so it was

pretty bad at that stage. The fight

started straight away.”

“I’ll get sick, there will

be days when I’m down

in the dumps, and there

will be days where

hopefully I’m good and

able to come to work like

normal. That’s the goal.”

His only symptom before

diagnosis was persistent

diarrhoea, which he initially

thought was a stomach bug

picked up on a family holiday

in Fiji.

When it went on for more

than a month, he went to his

doctor and mentioned his family

history.

Blood tests came back

negative but Colombus was

referred for a colonoscopy,

which found a tumor in his

colon. He had surgery to remove

the tumour, but subsequent

lumps were later found in his

lungs.

After his diagnosis, Colombus

made a list of goals he wanted to

achieve.

Playing his 100th game

for West Melton was one of

them. Another was finishing

a Bachelor of Management at

the University of Otago, which

he completed earlier this year.

He also wanted to keep up the

family tradition of holidaying in

Fiji.

This year, 18 friends joined

the family on the trip, and next

year’s holiday is already being

planned for April.

He is still able to work as a

production manager at the

Christchurch Engine Centre,

who helped fund his bachelor’s

degree – an achievement he said

he was proud of.

“Managing to finish it off was

pretty cool. Hopefully the kids

will see me and think ‘if Dad can

finish something when he’s not

too well, why can’t I?’”

Colombus and wife Eliza have

two children, 13-year-old Levi

and nine-year-old Amelia, who

both play rugby for West Melton.

He expects Saturday’s

milestone to be emotional, and

said the club had been a huge

support for his family.

“When I went through my first

lot of chemotherapy, I was pretty

sick, and my wife and the family

weren’t able to do too much at

home, so (the club) dropped me

out shopping and fuel vouchers

and stuff, it was pretty special.

“The people down there, even

people that I don’t directly talk

to, they know what’s going on

with me, they always come up to

say ‘hi, how are you doing’, check

in on me.”

Colombus said there were

times the diagnosis hit him hard,

but he tried to keep himself busy

rather than dwell on it.

“You actually feel fine in

yourself and in your body, it’s

just what’s growing inside is

what’s killing you. It’s a bit of a

mind game,” he said.

“I’ve got to keep my head up.

My motto is I’ve just got to keep

on smiling and live for today.”

The treatment next week

is known as the Breakwater

regimen and involves a mix

of chemotherapy, tablets and

other IV treatments that have

shown success overseas.

“I’m living in hope, I don’t

really know what’s involved,”

he said.

“I don’t know how many

times a week I’ve got to

go there, if it’s weekly or

fortnightly. I’ve got these chemo

tablets I’ll be having as well.

“And yeah, I’ll get sick, there

will be days when I’m down in

the dumps, and there will be

days where hopefully I’m good

and able to come to work like

normal. That’s the goal.”

MTB World Series in Leogang,

Austria at the weekend.

The 19-year-old, in her first

year of full-time elite racing,

dominated the 73km event which

incorporated six special stages,

descending more than 2000m.

She established an early

20-second lead after winning

the opening two stages, despite

suffering a flat tyre on stage two.

Goldsbury’s advantage was cut

to 16 seconds by Great Britain’s

defending world champion Ella

Conolly after the fourth stage, but

she responded strongly, extending

her lead to 30 seconds after the

demanding penultimate stage.

Goldsbury then held firm

on the final stage to win by 16

seconds and secure her first elite

victory.

“That’s insane. It feels so good,

I didn’t expect this at all,” she

said after her win.

“Thanks to all those people

who have helped me. I even

had a flat tyre on stage two.

Amazing.”

under way

Coach sees silver lining in

Vipers’ recent losing streak

Artificial sports turfs at Ngā Puna

Wai are set to be completed next

year.

The two turfs, currently under

construction between Wigram Rd

and the Southern Motorway, will

be the first of up to 12 planned

across six sites under the Sports

Field Network Plan approved by

the city council in 2024.

A city council spokesperson

said the Ngā Puna Wai fields are

expected to be completed in midto-late

2027.

“They will be managed the

same as the existing sports fields

in the city – as allocated spaces.

This will be done in partnership

with regional sporting

organisations.

“The addition of the artificial

turfs will support future growth

and allow for quality, consistent

playing surfaces no matter the

weather conditions.”

Christchurch currently has two

artificial turf fields, at English

Park in St Albans and Christchurch

Boys’ High.

There are also two at the United

Sports Centre in Yaldhurst,

and one each at Kendall Park

in Kaiapoi and Foster Park in

Rolleston.

The city council said QEII Park

had been identified as a possible

future location for artificial turfs,

while other sites are still being

considered.

University of Canterbury head

coach Tim Belcher believes

back-to-back losses could

ultimately benefit his side,

despite the Vipers slipping

outside the top four with

two rounds remaining in the

regular season.

University fell 29-17 to Sydenham

on Saturday, a week after

a 34-22 defeat to competition

leaders Linwood.

The Vipers are now fifth and

on track for their lowest finish

since 2022, with the top

eight teams qualifying for the

playoffs.

Belcher said University’s

strong regular-season form in

recent years had not translated

into finals success.

“I think learning from some

of these losses is not going to

be a bad thing for us going into

finals,” he said.

“You can’t finish top and beat

people by 50 or 60 in the round

robin and then expect to win

a comp. Thinking back to last

year, they put 50 on Linwood in

the first round and didn’t even

make the semis.”

Belcher backed his youthful

squad, which has at times featured

more than 10 teenagers

on the field, to peak at the right

time.

“We’ve got a lot of young

men who are very talented, but

they’re coming up against some

seasoned, experienced teams.

“I think the learnings we can

get from here will hold us in

good stead for the finals. You

don’t win the comp in June or

May, you win it in July, and as

long as we’re there or thereabouts,

I think we’ll be a very

tough side to beat.”

CENTRAL CITY NOISE

Plan Change 21

This proposed Plan Change addresses issues that have arisen in relation to the

management of noise in the Central City. It includes a revised approach to live music and

hospitality venues, providing for higher night-time noise levels for these venues in

expanded entertainment and hospitality precincts, while at the same time ensuring that

new residential and other noise sensitive activities in the Central City have adequate

noise insulation. Where this insulation is needed, mechanical ventilation will also be

required.

of highest groundwater. A Dry Anaerobic Digestion facility is

proposed to be established within the site (previously a quarry) and

The application for land use under CRC264887 seeks to add

excavation to the proposal, allowing excavations of up to 1.3 metres

below the current ground level (base of the quarry) to establish soak

pits for stormwater management. The site is located at 233 Old West

Coast Road, Christchurch, and legally described as Lot 1 DP 27763.

NALG (NZ) Ltd does not specify the proposed duration for

CRC264887.
