Ihave a love-hate relationship with

many things—my husband, exercise,

and electronics included—but it’s my

courtship with camping that’s truly

the most complicated. I adore it for

countless reasons: unplugging, open-air

meals, s’mores, stargazing, and watching my

kids marvel at the wonders of nature. But

there’s also plenty to dislike. Is it just me, or

is the amount of gear required for a weekend

in the woods absolutely mind-blowing? Then

there’s the arduous, stress-inducing process of

packing, setting up, and taking down the tent—

plus everything in and around it. And don’t get

me started on the bugs and backaches.

Sure, the more my family camps—and

the older my girls get—the easier and more

enjoyable it becomes. But isn’t there a better way? The answer is yes. It’s

called glamping, and on page 16, we share 10 nearby glamping destinations

where the accommodations are luxe (think air conditioning, plush

mattresses, private bathrooms, electricity) and the amenities plentiful

(hot showers, Wi-Fi, complimentary breakfast), while the great outdoors

remains right outside your doorstep. Better yet, most are pet-friendly, so

Fido can come along for the adventure.

month at 1007 East Bidwell Street, Suite

109, in Folsom. The studio will offer

functional squat racks, a full-strength

training setup, and other cutting-edge

equipment—all designed to help members

build power, stability, and confidence.

Enchanted Indoor Playground

(enchantedindoorplayground.com) is

expanding to Granite Bay with its fourth—

and largest—location. Scheduled to open

next summer at 8665 Auburn Folsom Road,

Suite B, the approximately 16,000-squarefoot

facility will introduce an ocean-themed

adventure to complement the company's

existing forest, space, and farm-themed

locations. Geared toward children ages

0–8, the space will feature spacious

party rooms, a large obstacle course,

dedicated infant tumbling zone, and

imaginative play experiences that encourage

movement, exploration, and creativity.

Stop by The Daily Nosh (thedailynosh.net)—hours

are Thursday-Sunday from 7 a.m.-3 p.m.—at 105

Vernon Street in Roseville for scratch-made breakfast,

brunch, and lunch fare along with craft cocktails in

a historic setting. Opened by Randy and Lisa Peters

of Randy Peters Catering & Event Center, the menu

features fresh biscuits, pastries, free-range eggs,

Benedicts, a loaded Bloody Mary, and more.

California-based soft-serve chain NuYo

(nuyofrozenyogurt.com), known for their high-quality,

create-your-own frozen yogurt creations and clean,

lively ambiance, is expanding to Rocklin’s Whitney

Ranch. The new location, expected to open this winter,

will feature 14 flavors of yogurt—including non-fat,

dairy-free, and no-sugar added options—as well as

freshly cut fruit, shaved ice, and 50 other toppings.

Brew Bird (brewbirdsac.com), a creative

coffee and paint-your-own pottery studio

where people can slow down, connect,

and make something with their hands, is

opening at 5550 Douglas Boulevard, Suite

D-110, in Granite Bay. Guests can also

look forward to java from Camellia Coffee

Roasters, beer, wine, and light bites. The

business operates an additional outpost in

Sacramento’s Land Park neighborhood.

Rocklin recently welcomed Bosphorus Turkish

Cuisine (bosphoruscuisine.com) to 6835 Five

Star Boulevard. Enjoy hot and cold mezes,

traditional kebabs, homemade desserts, and

other carefully prepared Turkish dishes—all

crafted with high-quality ingredients and

served in a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Bliss Marketplace (vintageblissmarketplace.

com), a vendor mall that offers a treasure

trove of unique, one-of-a-kind vintage

gems and handmade goods, is opening

their largest location yet—22,000 square

feet—at 13000 Folsom Boulevard in the

Folsom Premium Outlets. The brand currently

operates Bliss Marketplace in Rancho

Cordova, Midtown Bliss Home & Gifts in

Sacramento, and Bliss Market in Roseville.

New-to-market Asian restaurant Chubby Cattle (chubbycattle.com) is opening a

7,100-square-foot location at 1905 Taylor Road in Roseville. The Japanese-inspired, allyou-can-eat

immersive dining experience will feature premium Wagyu, pork, and chicken

grilled tableside, plus sushi, sashimi, hot pots, a self-serve beverage station, and more.

Globally renowned bakery-café Paris

Baguette (parisbaguette.com)—beloved for

their French-inspired cakes, seasonal sweet

Scholarship recipients: Oak Ridge High School seniors Joaquin Hudgens,

Joleen Berindei, and Abigail Palmer. Each graduate—chosen based on

activities, GPA, and financial need—received $1,000 to put toward their

by CAROLINE KINGS You may not know the name Kevin Nagle, but

chances are you’ve experienced the impact of his work through his

investments and philanthropy in the region. Among his most notable

ventures are the El Dorado Hills Town Center; chairman and CEO of

Sacramento Republic FC; the sole owner of the Huddersfield Town

Football Club, one of the most notable soccer teams in the UK; and a major

investor in Ice Blocks in downtown Sacramento. He’s also a private equity

and venture capitalist who sits on the Board at Folsom-based Moneta

Ventures, the largest venture capitalist firm in the region.

You previously lived in Southern

California. What brought you to

El Dorado Hills?

It was a quality-of-life change. I

had two young daughters under

the age of five and wanted them

to experience a less urban lifestyle

while growing up. El Dorado Hills

was a young community at the time

and was known for having excellent

public schools. Their mother is a

physician, and she worked in nearby

Folsom.

You’ve won the hearts and

minds of Sacramentans through

your long-term investments in

the region. What makes it so

attractive to you?

I believe in investing in your

community and helping in any way

you can. I spent the first half of

my life investing in my family and

businesses but eventually realized I

should do more for the region.

In my mind, Sacramento was an

overlooked community that was

often taken for granted because

there are so many major cities in

California. Yet the area is beautiful

and has so much to offer. We have

a balanced business community,

great access to the outdoors, an

agreeable climate for much of the

year, and a diverse population. I

enjoy living here, and now that my

children have grown up and started

families of their own, I like being

close by. Plus, the region is more

business-friendly than many other

parts of the state.

How are you involved

philanthropically?

Most recently, I served as

chairperson of the American Cancer

Society’s Cultivate campaign.

Our goal was to raise more than $1 million through a

one-day event centered on the role of healthy eating in

cancer prevention and overall wellness. Held during the

FIFA World Cup, the sold-out, farm-to-fork experience

featured dishes inspired by countries participating in the

tournament, each created by some of our region's top

chefs using fresh, nutrient-rich ingredients that showcase

the richness of our local agricultural community. It was a

tremendous success for a worthy cause, and we exceeded

our goal by raising $1.4 million.

What does a typical day look like for you?

If I’m in town, I get up at 6 a.m. and connect with my

businesses in the UK. At 7:15 a.m., I exercise for an hour,

then head home to get ready before arriving at my office

in El Dorado Hills Town Center around 9 a.m. My days are

filled with meetings—either in person or by video—and

walking the Town Center, which I view as our future city

center, looking for opportunities to improve it. I usually

head home around 5 p.m. to enjoy some personal time.

The El Dorado Hills Town Center is bustling and

thriving. How do you see the area evolving?

The area is only going to get bigger and better, though

not without challenges. I see El Dorado Hills becoming an

incorporated city in the future. In my opinion, that will

be necessary to preserve its identity and maintain local

control over economic development, housing needs, and

environmental stewardship, including the protection of

open space.

Sacramento Republic FC is a magnet for local

soccer fans. How is the new stadium development

progressing, and what will it take for the club to

become part of MLS?

The stadium is progressing on schedule and is

expected to be completed in 2028. Infrastructure

work at The Railyards is already underway. Once that

phase is complete, construction of the stadium itself

will move rapidly and transform the area dramatically.

The project will spur significant development, including

hotels, retail, and much-needed housing. Sacramento

Republic FC is enjoying early success again this season

and will have options regarding its future direction.

What do you hope will be the impact of the FIFA

World Cup this summer?

The World Cup in the United States represents the

next major opportunity for soccer to grow here. We

saw that happen in 1994, the last time the U.S. hosted

the world's premier international soccer tournament,

and now we're poised to experience the next phase of

that growth.

Kristin Hartman

time, she worked as an art instructor

at the Crocker Art Museum and a

local paint-and-sip studio, while also

painting custom murals for homes and

businesses.

Visiting other artists’ studios on the 2024

Placer Artists Tour proved to be a turning

point for Hartman, rekindling her passion

for landscape painting and inspiring her to

participate in the 2025 tour.

“It was a big endeavor to create a

whole new series of work in a short

amount of time, but it was a great

experience overall,” Hartman says,

adding that the tour did a great job

highlighting new artists. “It was the

push I needed to start back up again.

Having deadlines held me accountable

to start and continue painting.”

Hartman shares her work on her

website (khartman.com) and Instagram

(@khartmanart); she also has several

pieces on display in Granite Bay Artists’

exhibition, Versatility in the Visual Arts,

at the Harris Center’s Bank of America

Gallery, through August 9. This fall, she

plans to return to the Placer Artists Tour.

What mediums do you work in?

During and after college, I worked

primarily in oils, but I have since

switched to acrylics. I prefer the

quick drying time of acrylics, and the

convenience of not having to worry

about solvents and ventilation like I

did with oils. I’m currently using only

acrylics on either canvas or wood panel.

Sunlight filtering through trees, quiet

shoreline scenes, and the beauty of

the natural world all inspire Kristin

Hartman, whose expressive landscape

paintings reflect a deep connection to

the region she calls home.

“Most of my reference photographs

are taken at Folsom Lake,” says

Hartman, who was born in Sweden,

raised primarily in Folsom, and now

lives in Granite Bay. “I then paint in the

studio from pictures I’ve taken.”

After graduating from Folsom High

School, and going to Sierra College,

Hartman studied art at Sacramento

State, before exhibiting her work

throughout the region. She later

stepped away from her personal

artwork to raise a family, while

continuing to stay connected to the

creative world through teaching and

commissioned projects. During that

How would you describe your style?

Loose and expressive, with an emphasis

on the feeling behind each piece rather

than the fine details of the subject

matter. I adopted this [aesthetic] in

college when I was experimenting with

new mediums, styles, and color. It’s

drastically different than the blended,

realistic style I had in high school.

Describe your process.

I take photographs of landscape scenes

that inspire me, and later use them as a

movement and energy within the pieces is

achieved by painting quickly and blocking

in areas of light and dark. Keeping

painting time to a minimum helps me to

not overwork the pieces and allows me to

achieve the carefree look I’m going for.

My paintings usually take anywhere

from three to 10 hours to complete,

depending on the size and complexity. I

tend to prefer paintings that were created

in the least number of hours. They

embody the carefree look by not being too

cluttered with details.

Are you experimenting with anything

new?

I’m working on getting my acrylic

paintings to look like my oil paintings—to

have the colors look like they’re smearing

into each other instead of being layered

on top of each other. With oils, getting

colors to smear together is easy because

the paint takes weeks to dry. Acrylics dry

in minutes, so to get the same look I need

to have my paints premixed and ready to

go, and then paint quickly. I’m continuing

with landscapes for my next series of work

but [plan to focus] on simpler scenes with

more depth and less cluttered detail.

What is the best compliment you could

get about your art?

I love when people are drawn in to take a

closer look, or step back to get a different

perspective. It’s fun to hear which painting

is a viewer’s favorite, with the ultimate

compliment being when someone loves

the piece so much that they want to invest

in keeping it.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I’m a homeschool mom of two, and my

kids are involved in sports, so we’re always

going from one activity to the next. We

also spend a lot of time at Bayside Church

where I volunteer in the kids’ ministry. I

love the community we have through our

homeschool program, sports, and church.

When I have nowhere to be, I like to

squeeze in a CrossFit class, grab a coffee,

spend time with my family at Folsom Lake,

hang out with friends, and shop locally.

From weighted vests and cold plunges

to protein-packed diets and nervous

system regulation, health and wellness

trends evolve at lightning speed. Social

media fuels the hype, but behind every

viral habit is a bigger question: Does it

actually work?

Local health professionals say some

recent trends are rooted in science

and can support long-term health,

but consumers shouldn’t confuse

marketing with meaningful results.

“Health and wellness trends often

grow because they tap into very real

human needs and hopes,” says Holly

Spotts, PsyD, clinical psychologist at

Full Cup Wellness. “Most people are

genuinely trying to feel better. They

want to feel more alive and present

in their own lives, more energetic,

productive, less stressed, and have a

stronger sense of balance.”

Keep reading to find out what trends

experts say are worth embracing—and

what may be better left behind.

TREND WORTH TRYING:

PRIORITIZING PROTEIN AND FIBER

Protein-heavy eating plans continue

to dominate the wellness world, and

experts say there’s good cause for that—

within reason.

“Protein is the building block for

growth, repair, and maintenance of

bodily tissues including hair, skin, nails,

and musculoskeletal development,”

says Carly Beukman, PT, DPT, FAFS,

with Marshall’s Center for Sports

Rehabilitation and Active Living.

Dr. Beukman recommends getting

and rebuild our systems.”

She recommends protecting sleep

quality by limiting caffeine late in the day,

alcohol, and screen time before bed.

Technology is also helping people

better understand their sleep habits.

“Wearables, sleep tracking, posture analysis,

recovery tools, and personalized fitness

recommendations give people more realtime

insight into their health than ever

before,” Gibson says.

digestive health, blood sugar regulation, and

maintaining a healthy gut microbiome.

Fitness professionals say the trend

reflects a broader shift away from crash

dieting and toward sustainable health

habits. “Many people would benefit far

more from focusing on the basics first and

building consistent habits—including eating

enough protein, but also getting better sleep,

staying hydrated, and moving regularly,”

says Bret Gibson, corporate fitness director

at Spare Time Sports Clubs.

TREND WORTH TRYING: STRENGTH

TRAINING FOR LONGEVITY

Forget the idea that weightlifting is only for

bodybuilders. Experts say heavy resistance

training is one of the most beneficial things

people can do as they age.

“Lifting heavy weights is crucial for health,

fitness, and aging graciously,” says Ryan

Ebersole, PT, DPT, Cert-MMOA, FMS, with

Marshall’s Center for Sports Rehabilitation

and Active Living. Dr. Ebersole says many

people fear injury from lifting weights, but

notes that weightlifting is generally safe when

done correctly. “As you age, your body loses

muscle unless you’re actively working to

improve strength,” he says.

Gibson says the growing focus on

longevity rather than aesthetics is one of the

healthiest shifts happening in fitness.

“There’s growing interest in functional

strength training, mobility work, posture,

balance, bone health, and nervous system

regulation because we now understand

how these support our bodies as we age,”

Gibson says. “The goal is no longer just to

look healthy, but to stay strong, capable, and

energized for the long run.”

TREND WORTH TRYING: WALKING GOALS

AND EVERYDAY MOVEMENT

While “10,000 steps a day” has become

a fitness mantra, experts say the magic

number is less important than consistency.

“Research has found benefit derived

from as low as 3,000-4,000 steps [a day] with

a relative plateauing effect greater than

8,000 steps,” Dr. Ebersole says.

Instead of obsessing over hitting a

specific number, he recommends starting

with manageable goals and gradually

increasing activity over time. “Consistency

is more important than more steps,” he says.

Mental health professionals also point

to movement as an important tool for

emotional wellness. “Body movement on

a regular basis is always on trend,” says

Ashlee Janzen, MS, LMFT. “The benefits,

both physically and emotionally, are

undeniable. Stress, trauma, grief, memories,

and anxiety are all examples of what can be

stored in the body.”

TREND WORTH TRYING: NERVOUS

SYSTEM REGULATION

Somatic therapy, meditation, yoga, and

other nervous system regulation practices

have exploded in popularity—and local

therapists say the attention is overdue. “I

think the growing focus on slowing down

and caring for our nervous systems is

a positive shift,” Spotts says. “Practices

like yoga, breathwork, mindfulness,

grounding exercises, and simply

learning to listen to what your body is

communicating can help support anxiety

management, sleep, emotional regulation,

and overall well-being.”

Janzen agrees, particularly when it

comes to therapies that help people process

stress and trauma. “Utilizing ‘bottom-up’

approaches like somatic therapy, EMDR

(eye movement desensitization and

reprocessing), mindfulness work, and

breathwork are all great ways to help

regulate the nervous system,” she says.

Nancy Ryan, LMFT, Certified Gottman

Therapist (CGT), and CEO of Relationship

Therapy Center, says emotional regulation

is becoming a critical wellness skill. “These

skills help people pause, reflect, notice what

is happening inside their bodies, and become

more aware of the story they’re telling

themselves in the moment,” Ryan says.

TREND WORTH TRYING: BETTER SLEEP

HYGIENE

Sleep may not be flashy, but experts say

it remains one of the most powerful

wellness tools available. “Sleep is so

critical to our general health for so many

reasons,” Dr. Beukman says. “It helps with

our general cognitive function, mood,

influences hormone regulation and

production, and is when our liver works

to detoxify our bodies and remove waste

TREND TO SKIP: PEPTIDE THERAPY

WITHOUT MEDICAL OVERSIGHT

If there’s one trend nearly every expert

raised red flags about, it’s the rise

of peptides and injectable wellness

treatments purchased online or used

without medical supervision.

“Often, these products are bought on

the gray market without a lot of oversight

for quality control,” Dr. Beukman says.

Dr. Ebersole echoes concerns about

unregulated products being used

unsafely at home.

Matthew Fields, DO, a family medicine

physician with Kaiser Permanente Folsom,

says many peptide treatments are not FDAapproved

and may carry significant risks.

“Many peptides sold online are unregulated,

meaning their purity, dosage, and safety

have not been verified by any medical

authority,” he says.

Experts stress that any injectable

treatment or supplement should first be

discussed with a qualified healthcare

provider.

TREND TO SKIP: EXTREME WELLNESS

CULTURE

Experts also cautioned against “all or

nothing” wellness mindsets fueled by social

media.

“Any trend that promotes extreme

restriction, perfectionism, or rigid rules can

quickly become emotionally unhealthy,”

Spotts says. That includes overly restrictive

diets, detoxes, and constant self-optimization.

“There’s a growing message that we

should always be improving ourselves,

tracking ourselves, fixing ourselves, or

maximizing every part of our lives,” Spotts

says. “There’s a difference between healthy

growth and feeling like we’re never enough.”

Ryan also warns people against relying

too heavily on influencers or AI chatbots

for mental health advice. “Mental health

guidance should come from properly

trained and regulated professionals, not

simply from someone who is popular

online,” Ryan says.

Overall, experts agree the healthiest

trends are often as simple as the basics. “The

truth is, the path to true wellness is usually a

lot less glamorous than social media makes

it look,” Spotts says. “Real wellness is often

found in the simple, repeated habits that

support our physical and emotional wellbeing

over time.”

A: The difference between a beef

Blueprint

From Basic to Bespoke

When the owners of a 2,100-square-foot home in Loomis purchased

their first house, they saw potential—even if it was hiding beneath

decades of dated finishes and compartmentalized design.

Built in 1996, the single-story, four-bedroom, three-bath home had

all the hallmarks of its era: red oak cabinetry, dark interiors, and a layout that felt more

functional than inspiring.

Before moving in, the homeowners decided to renovate the property, focusing on

the main living spaces. Their goal was practical yet ambitious: to create a

home that felt simple, comfortable, functional, and family-friendly.

To bring that vision to life, they hired Sue Tayara, founder and

lead designer of Tayara Home (tayarahome.com).

“This home began with all the familiar characteristics of

its time and many features that made it feel less like a custom

home and more like one of the many cookie-cutter houses found

throughout the region,” Tayara says.

The renovation took about nine months total—three months

for design and another six months

for construction. Tayara says the

compressed timeline was one of the

project’s biggest challenges.

“The design had to be finalized within

a very short timeline,” she says.

The most dramatic transformation

centered on the open-concept living

area, including the kitchen, pantry, living

room, and entryway. Divided by walls

that interrupted both light and flow, the

space felt closed off and dated. Tayara

identified one structural change that

would redefine the house: removing

the wall between the kitchen and living

room—"a decision that completely

changed the flow, light, and emotional

atmosphere of the house.”

Thanks to her architectural

background, Tayara confirmed the wall

could be removed without creating

major structural complications. That

decision opened the door for a new layout

centered around a large island and a

more connected family gathering space.

The redesign balanced modern

minimalism with warmth and

practicality. Instead of relying on

standard upper-and-lower cabinetry

arrangements, Tayara focused on


creating a cleaner, more intentional kitchen design

anchored by a statement range hood and a dramatic

feature wall: a custom storage-focused installation that

introduced texture and warmth to the space.

“One of the most distinctive choices was the use

of fluted, backlit wood slats in place of a typical tile

or stone backsplash along the kitchen wall unit,” she

says. “Because it’s not a wet area, this decision allowed

us to be more creative and give the space a sculptural

softness and warmth that feels both unexpected and

deeply inviting.”

Natural materials also became a defining theme

throughout the renovation. Tayara preserved the

integrity of the wood grain and selected finishes that

added character rather than hide it.

“I strongly advocated for a stain color that would

bring joy, elegance, and individuality to the cabinetry

without losing the beauty of the natural wood grain,”

she says. “Preserving the honesty of natural materials is

one of the things I value most in design. I never want to

hide their character. I want to reveal it, enhance it, and

bring it fully to life.”

The entryway also received a substantial update. An

overlooked recessed area was transformed into builtin

storage paired with a mirror, serving both aesthetic

and practical purposes. “It became both functional

and graceful—a quiet but important place to conceal

clutter while welcoming the eye with warmth and

intention,” Tayara says.

Elsewhere in the home, the renovation focused

more on updating finishes rather than making major

structural changes. But the open-concept redesign

fundamentally shifted the experience of entering the

house. “It’s a day-and-night change,” Tayara says.

The project exceeded not only the homeowners’

expectations but also their

original budget—though

Tayara says once the clients

saw the direction the design

was taking, they decided the

investment was worth it.

For Tayara, one of the

most rewarding aspects of

the renovation was the trust

established between designer

and homeowner from the very

beginning. “I didn’t have to

struggle to convince them of

a design direction or justify

bold spatial changes. They

were open-minded, receptive

to new ideas,

and deeply

appreciative

throughout

every stage of

the process,” she says.

That collaborative

relationship became the

foundation of the project’s

success. “Their trust allowed

the design to unfold naturally,

and their enthusiasm made

the journey all the more

meaningful,” Tayara says.

Looking back, Tayara

says the renovation proves

that even the most ordinary

homes can become something

exceptional with thoughtful

design and a willingness to

reimagine the possibilities.

“I’ve always believed that

beauty can be created where

no one thought it possible.”

Braised Beef Soup

Behind a large window at Highland Noodles in Roseville, the making of handpulled

noodles is reminiscent of taffy being pulled in a candy shop. The flourbased

dough is worked, rested, then drawn into long strands—with diners selecting

the noodle width for each dish they order. A board displays six options, ranging

from delicate, angel hair-like threads to broad, flat ribbons built to soak up rich

broths and sauces.

In a dining landscape dominated by pre-made and frozen noodles, Highland’s

fresh, made-to-order approach stands out. The technique has earned the restaurant

more than 5,000 Instagram followers and a steady stream of glowing reviews since

opening locally last fall.

enormous steaming bowls of soup, slurped

tangled nests of noodles, and passed platters

of dumplings. With warm lighting, clean

lines, and an open view into the kitchen,

the dining room feels contemporary yet

casual—equally suited for a quick lunch or

a relaxed night out.

The menu stretches far beyond noodle

soups, though, with everything from

colorful stir-fries and handmade dim sum

to crispy scallion pancakes and classic

Chinese entrées. We opted to share several

dishes, letting the photo-filled menu and

our server guide us.

We started with the braised beef soup

with bok choy, cilantro, and spaghetti-like

noodles, and the dan dan noodles with

minced pork, bok choy, and flat, fettucinelike

strands. Curious to venture beyond

noodles, we also chose the pork wontons

with chili oil and sesame seed paste, and,

for a lighter side, the cucumber salad. At

the last minute, my husband added an

order of the barbecue pork bao buns.

The food arrived promptly, and the

generous portions made it obvious that

we’d be taking home leftovers. Armed

with chopsticks, soup spoons, and a pair of

scissors to snip the long, pleasantly chewy

noodles into manageable lengths, we dove

in. My husband especially enjoyed the deep,

rich broth and tender beef in the soup,

while I preferred the slightly sweet and

spicy Sichuan-style dan dan noodles. We

both devoured the tender, flavorful wontons

and the fluffy bao buns. But the surprising

standout was the cucumber salad—crisp,

bite-size pieces tossed in a light, tangy

dressing of vinegar and sesame oil.

By the end of the meal, it was easy to

understand why Highland

at Teleferic Barcelona is just the ticket for Spanish influences on familiar bites. Start

orange mousse, then move on to the torrija (essentially Spain’s take on French toast,

using caramelized toast, passion fruit, crème brûlée, and ice cream on the side). End with

As soon as you walk into Sienna, your first

thought will probably be, “Wow, this place

is gorgeous.” Perfect for a first date, special

occasion, or simply a night out—whatever the

reason, order the Ale Braised Short Rib. The red

wine demi-glace pairs perfectly with the soft,

tender short rib, bacon marmalade, baby carrots,

and smashed red potatoes. Each bite delivers a

blissful combination of flavor and umami.

PRO TIP: Order a handcrafted cocktail from one of

their charming and highly skilled bartenders. And

if you’re looking for a smaller version of the same

short rib, try it in poutine form with cheese curds

It must have been the wafting scent of layered

pasta and cheese in the air that led my taste

buds to Placerville’s Amore Mio Italian Bistro.

I tried the multi-layer white sauce Pope’s

Lasagna. Led by a three-cheese blend, savory

béchamel sauce, mushrooms, and four different

meats (ground beef, ground pork, pancetta, and

crumbled sausage), it was, indeed, a spiritual

experience. Light yet filling, it reminded me of

the unforgettable vacation I took to Rome in

that one dream I had about it. I’m also kind of

wondering if this recipe somehow escaped the

Vatican and actually is the pope’s recipe.

PRO TIP: Sit on Amore Mio’s patio and take in the

view of the flowing creek beneath the tiny bridge.

The relaxing sounds of the water pair perfectly

with one of their specialty Italian cocktails. 451

PRO TIP: The process of making homemade

honeycomb is highly sensitive to timing and

temperature, making it surprisingly hard to

find. Snooks is one of the few local places that

Bar none, Johnny’s NY Pizzeria serves some

of the best local pizza. It’s one of my top 10

favorites, and I’ve eaten pizza all over the U.S.

It makes sense, because namesake Johnny

has East Coast pizzeria roots. I love ordering a

whole Tony Soprano—featuring tomato sauce,

mozzarella, pepperoni, dollops of creamy

ricotta, and hot honey drizzle—but Johnny’s

giant New York-style slices are equally delicious.

There’s a science to a reheated slice, and I

think I’ve cracked the code. When a slice sits

in the display case waiting to be sold, the oils

from the meats and cheeses begin soaking into

the crust. Once you choose your favorite, any

great pizzeria—Johnny’s included—will throw it

back in the oven for a few minutes to crisp up.

As it heats, those oils redistribute throughout

the slice, creating a buttery, crispy crust and a

perfect melt on the cheese.

PRO TIP: Grab a pepperoni slice and have

them add a drizzle of their house-made pesto.

I also like to dip my pizza in their marinara—it’s

a family recipe that can’t be missed. 2830

Where do I park my horse? That’s the feeling you get when you walk through the doors

of Snooks Chocolate Factory in the Folsom Historic District. No matter how many

chocolates and treats are staring you in the face, you can’t help but feel like you’ve

stepped into an Old West saloon—for confections. What a cool feeling. This chocolate

factory has been around since 1963, and they’re famous for their brittle and

truffles, though I’m personally a huge fan of the Chocolate Honeycomb Candy,

featuring a light, crunchy sea foam center coated in dark chocolate.

Chicken Fried Chicken? Yep, you read

that correctly. This crispy masterpiece

from RANGE Kitchen & Tap comes on a

bed of mashed potatoes smothered in white

gravy. I dip everything in that gravy, including

my fingers. My favorite is getting a little bit

of everything on my fork. The softness of

the mash, the crispiness of the chicken, and

the creaminess of the gravy come together

to create the perfect bite. Honestly, I dream

about it every time I leave the restaurant. Also,

the service here is a 10.

PRO TIP: The Range Burger is also excellent;

I ranked it as an “A-tier” burger in a separate

review. If you’re not in the mood for chicken,

Althea Canines' service and therapy dog program helps

dogs and handlers develop the skills, confidence, and

reliability needed to excel in real-world environments. Using

positive, science-based training methods, the organization

provides personalized coaching in public access skills, task

training, and therapy dog preparation, supporting each

team every step of the way on their journey to success.

want to become a

volunteer for Althea

Canines?

I’m passionate

about pups who are

thoughtfully raised to

be companions and

provide vital services

to people who

benefit from service,

therapy, and facility

dogs. Witnessing the

powerful bond that

forms between a dog

and their owner is

incredibly rewarding,

especially when that

connection positively

transforms someone’s

life. Being part of

this journey—from the very beginning to the lasting

impact these dogs make—is something I truly value

and take great pride in.

What do your volunteer duties entail?

I support the care and development of puppies

in the program by assisting with feeding, bathing,

temperament testing, and maintaining clean

bedding and play areas. I also help socialize the

puppies through off-site visits and spend time

engaging with them through play and affection.

In addition to hands-on care, I serve as the

organization’s treasurer, contributing to board

activities, attending meetings, and supporting

fundraising efforts.

What’s the time commitment?

While there’s no set requirement beyond regular

board meetings, I consistently make myself available

to support the organization whenever I can. My

level of involvement varies—some months require

only a few hours, while others call for additional

time and support.

What’s been your most memorable volunteer

experience?

Traveling to San Diego to support UC San

Diego’s therapy dog teams as they prepared for

graduation and certification stands out as a favorite

experience. It was inspiring to see the dogs actively

working with students on campus and to witness the

strong partnerships between them.

I also enjoy participating in public-access outings

and socializing our puppies in community settings,

such as local law enforcement dispatch centers.

Seeing the immediate joy and connection these

dogs bring—and watching people light up when they

interact with them—brings me joy and is a powerful

reminder of the impact this work has.

What’s one of the biggest challenges?

Finding enough time to contribute as much as I

would like. It’s also bittersweet when one of the

puppies I’ve formed a connection with progresses

through the program.
