first Advocate

R&D-qualified ball valve supports major offshore gas

infrastructure project

Oliver Valves has supplied a R&D-qualified

trunnion-mounted, metal-seated ball

valve for use on a major offshore gas

infrastructure programme designed to

maintain and expand field production

capacity.

The wider development includes the

installation of a new production deck module

and associated subsea pipelines, forming part

of a significant offshore upgrade to support

long-term gas output. For this demanding

application, Oliver Valves supplied a 14mm

trunnion-mounted ball valve with lip

seals, developed and qualified to meet the

performance requirements of harsh offshore

service conditions.

Pumps & Valves Update

To ensure reliability in operation, the valve

underwent rigorous R&D testing and has

been qualified to ISO 15848-1. Performance

has been verified across a wide temperature

range from -46°C to 121°C, with the

valve meeting FE Tightness Class BH and

Endurance Class C01 standards.

This project reflects Oliver Valves’ ability

to deliver fully qualified, high-integrity

valve solutions for critical offshore gas

developments, supporting engineering,

procurement, construction and installation

activities where reliability and performance

Oliver Valvetek wins King’s Award for Enterprise in

Innovation

Oliver Valvetek has been honoured with the King’s

Award for Enterprise in Innovation, recognising

a major in-house engineering development that

has delivered significant benefits for subsea valve

performance, reliability and long-term customer

confidence.

This latest success marks the fourth Royal Award

achieved by the Oliver family of companies, and Oliver

Valvetek’s third Royal Award. It is also the company’s

first award in the Innovation category, underlining

the role that British engineering, research and

development, and practical problem-solving continue

to play across the business.

At the heart of the award-winning innovation is a

new Face Seal arrangement for Oliver Valvetek’s

subsea gate valves. Developed entirely in-house by

the company’s UK-based R&D team, the innovation

replaces a conventional spring-energised lip seal

with a simpler, one-piece PEEK polymer seal

designed to improve performance in extreme subsea

environments.

Unlike traditional sealing arrangements, the new Face

Seal uses system pressure to strengthen the sealing

effect. As operating pressure increases, the seal

becomes more effective, providing greater reliability in

demanding applications where failure is not an option.

The innovation has been qualified for working

pressures from 5,000 psi to 20,000 psi and simulated

water depths of up

to 4,000 metres. For

subsea operators, where

unplanned intervention

can be highly complex,

costly and time-critical,

the performance

benefits are significant.

Improved sealing

reliability helps reduce

the risk of downtime,

supports safer offshore

operations and provides

greater confidence for high-pressure, deepwater

projects.

Beyond the technical performance, the innovation

has also delivered major operational and commercial

benefits. By bringing the design and manufacture of

the seal fully in-house, Oliver Valvetek has reduced

reliance on external suppliers, improved quality

control, simplified assembly and strengthened its

ability to respond quickly to customer requirements.

The development has already supported more than

£6.8 million in orders, demonstrating its clear impact

in the market.

Expanding UK manufacturing and reshoring capability

Apex Pumps has made a major investment in its Bristol

headquarters, expanding its premises to support future

growth and increasing demand while maintaining the

quality standards the company is known for.

The business has invested heavily in state-of-the-art

CNC machinery, including Mazak Quick Turn lathes and

HCN NEO horizontal machining centres, enabling greater

precision, efficiency and control across the manufacturing

process. Importantly, this has allowed Apex to bring more

machining in-house and reshore stainless steel machining

and casting operations back to the UK, reducing reliance

on overseas suppliers.

These investments have not only increased manufacturing

capacity but also strengthened Apex’s commitment to

British engineering and long-term supply chain resilience.

People are at the heart of Apex Pumps

While investment in technology has been key, Apex

Pumps is clear that its success is driven by its people.

The company continues to invest heavily in skills and

training, with apprenticeship training deeply rooted into

its culture. 36% of the current workforce began their

careers as apprentices, including four current apprentices,

while four former apprentices now work full-time within

the business.

Apex Pumps is a long-standing supporter of engineering

education, helping to shape the next generation of

engineering talent; delivering BEMA apprenticeship

schemes, sponsoring STEM On Track at IKB Academy in

Keynsham, and supporting a range of local community

initiatives. Members of the Apex team, including

in CO 2 e emissions, generated 175MWh of renewable

energy from its 150kW solar array in Bristol, and reduced

grid electricity usage by 37.8% through renewables and

smarter energy management.

These efforts have been recognised nationally, with Apex

Pumps named Runner Up for Sustainability Initiative

of the Year at the Made in Britain Impact Awards and

crowned Winner of the Sustainable Contribution for

a Better World category at the BPMA Pump Industry

Awards 2026.

GCE ® has introduced its Mach2

auto-darkening welding

helmet, designed to

enable operators to work

with greater clarity,

comfort and versatility

across welding, cutting

and grinding applications.

The Mach2 features GCE’s

advanced ColorView lens

technology, which allows

users to see the workpiece in

natural colours rather than

the green-tinted view often

associated with traditional

helmets. This clearer, more

realistic view helps operators

see the weld puddle better

and differentiate it from the

workpiece, supporting more

precise bead placement and

reducing eye strain during long

shifts.

The Mach2 delivers flexibility and productivity on the

shop floor with three operating modes (Weld, Cut

and Grind) and easy parameter adjustments made

from digital controls inside the helmet. Weld Mode

supports MMA, MIG/MAG, flux

cored and TIG welding with

variable shade control

from 8-13. Grind Mode

fixes the lens at shade 3

to provide visibility of the

workpiece and eliminate

the need to switch to a

grinding shield. Cut mode

provides shade levels 5

through 8.

For Weld and Cut modes,

Sensitivity and Delay (0.1 to

1.0 second) controls further

tailor performance to

match the application. For

example, a high sensitivity/

short delay for TIG welding

at low amperages or low

sensitivity/high delay for high

amperages helps protect the eyes

from the bright afterglow once the

arc stops.

“GCE developed the Mach2 helmet to give metal

fabricators a better visual experience and greater

day-to-day flexibility,” said Amil Anwar, Business

lens technology and dedicated modes, users can move

from task to task with the visibility, protection and

Performance with value

The Mach2 auto-darkening filter (ADF) offers a 1/1/1/2

optical class rating for a sharp, clear and consistent

view of the weld puddle. The ADF has a viewing

area of 95 x 40mm and reacts in 0.05 milliseconds

(1/23,000th of a second; an eye blink averages 100

milliseconds, or 1/10th of a second). The helmet uses

two arc sensors and is powered by solar cells with

a replaceable CR2450 lithium battery. It complies

with EN ISO 16321-2: 2021 on personal protective

equipment and is CE marked.

Operator comfort also played a central role in the

helmet’s design. The headgear’s two-strap design

helps decrease perceived helmet weight; a third, rear

strap and integrated comfort cushion pad improve

balance and reduce neck strain. A quick-release

rail-type headgear system also enables easy, precise

adjustment of the distance between the eyes and lens.

GCE launches Nitrogas NG modular

nitrogen generator to lower gas

costs, prevent supply disruptions

GCE has announced the introduction of

its NITROGAS NG series of on-premise

nitrogen generators using state-of-the-art

pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology.

Eight models offer flow rates ranging from 5

to 100Nm 3 /h at guaranteed purity levels from

95% to 99.999%. Its dual-level modular design

allows each generator to be expanded through

additional adsorption modules, while multiple

generators can also be combined to achieve very

high overall production

capacities.

Nitrogen generators are

suitable for all users of

nitrogen, from small

to large consumers in

the food and beverage,

wineries, breweries, laser

cutting, heat treatment and

electronic manufacturing

industries, as well as other

applications.

“We designed the

NITROGAS NG nitrogen

generator to immediately

reduce operating costs for a wide range of customers

– from those with medium to small nitrogen

requirements to large industrial consumers using

several hundred thousand cubic metres per year,”

said Andrea Castellanza, general manager of

NITROGAS.

Castellanza added that a nitrogen generator

provides peace of mind. There are no worries about

lost production because cylinders run empty, no

wasting time with daily checks of cylinder pressure

or tanks levels, no need to move cylinder bundles

with a forklift, and no worries about delivery time or

accurate order fulfilment.

“GCE offers more than a standalone nitrogen

generator. We can provide a complete, fully plug-andplay

nitrogen production solution, available either

skid-mounted or containerised, including all required

components,” Castellanza said.

High-performance 4.0 design

The NITROGAS NG produces nitrogen by selective

adsorption on a bed of carbon molecular sieve (CMS)

using compressed air, starting from compressed air

class 1.4.1, according to ISO 8573-1:2010. It features

PLC supervision of the system to continuously

control and/or monitor

pressure regulation, flow

rate, moisture content, and

temperature, and the PLC

enables setting parameter

limits and alarms. In

addition, a zirconium

oxide oxygen analyser

continuously measures

residual oxygen content in

the nitrogen flow to certify

purity levels, while a selfcleaning

design discharges

any non-specified gas into

the atmosphere to ensure

correct purity.

Users can interface with the Industry 4.0-ready

NITROGAS NG via an Ethernet port or Wi-Fi router.

They can directly control production parameters

from their computer or mobile device and generate

reports. For those systems not connected, the

NITRIGAS NG can create reports and export them by

USB port.

The NITROGAS NG range features the lowest air

factors on the market (the ratio between inlet air

and nitrogen outlet flow rate), meaning it requires

significantly less compressed air to produce nitrogen.

When nitrogen demand falls to zero, the system

automatically detects this condition and switches to

energy-saving mode, reducing consumption to zero.
