We were deeply saddened to

hear of the death of our garden

expert, Matthew Biggs VMH,

who passed away in May at the

age of 65. For many readers,

Matthew’s gardening column

was a familiar and trusted

feature, offering practical advice,

seasonal wisdom and an

infectious enthusiasm for plants.

Best known for his appearances

on Gardeners’ Question

Time, Matthew combined

vast horticultural knowledge

with warmth and humour. A

professional gardener for more

than 25 years, he studied at

Pershore College of Agriculture

and the Royal Botanic Gardens,

Kew, before going on to write

many books and become one

of Britain’s most respected

gardening voices.

Recently awarded the Victoria

Medal of Honour, one of

horticulture’s highest accolades,

Matthew was also admired

for his determination during

his battle with bowel cancer,

including his work helping to

create a therapeutic garden at

Mount Vernon Hospital.

We are enormously grateful

for Matthew’s contribution to

this magazine. His columns

encouraged readers to embrace

the seasons and appreciate the

missed, and our thoughts are

with his family, friends and the

many gardeners he inspired.

Compton Verney

COMPTON VERNEY

At first glance, Compton Verney might

look like a traditional stately home.

Designed by Robert Adam in the 18th

century, the Grade I listed mansion sits

within 120 acres of beautiful parkland

landscaped by ‘Capability’ Brown. Cross

the bridge over the lake and follow the

drive towards the house, and you might

expect grand drawing rooms, dining

rooms and bedrooms. But Compton

Verney has a few surprises in store.

After falling into disrepair following

the Second World War, the estate was

bought by the Peter Moores Foundation

in 1993. A major £45 million restoration

transformed the mansion into an art

gallery and cultural destination, opening

to the public in 2004.

Today, Compton Verney is a place where

art and nature come together. Open

Wednesday to Sunday and bank holiday

Mondays throughout the year, your ticket

includes entry to the galleries, exhibitions

and grounds, with free parking included.

Inside, discover world-class collections

across three floors, from 3,000-yearold

Chinese bronzes and portraits of

Elizabeth I to the largest collection of

British Folk Art in the UK. Four temporary

exhibitions each year bring fresh stories,

ideas and perspectives to the galleries.

Outside, contemporary sculptures are

dotted through woodland, wildflower

meadows, lakeside paths and lawns.

Families can explore the playground,

bird hide, den-building area and sensory

garden, while the chapel and ice house

offer glimpses into the estate’s past.

Complete your day out with the gallery

shop and café, serving seasonal lunches,

cakes, ice cream and excellent coffee.

UNCOVERING THE SECRETS OF

THE BOY KING: TUTANKHAMUN

The Immersive Exhibition comes to Birmingham

For more than a century, the discovery

of Tutankhamun’s tomb has captivated

the world. The treasures unearthed in

the Valley of the Kings transformed

our understanding of Ancient Egypt

and introduced generations to the

mystery of the young pharaoh whose

name has become synonymous with

one of history’s greatest archaeological

discoveries.

Now, visitors to Birmingham have the

chance to experience that story in a

whole new way as **Tutankhamun: The

Immersive Exhibition** arrives at the

NEC. Combining history with cuttingedge

technology, this spectacular

exhibition takes guests on a journey

through the world of Ancient Egypt,

bringing the life and legacy of the

famous boy king vividly to life.

Designed to appeal to history

enthusiasts, families and anyone with a

sense of curiosity, the exhibition offers

far more than a traditional museum

visit. Through immersive digital

experiences, interactive displays,

detailed replicas and fascinating

storytelling, visitors can explore

the culture, beliefs and remarkable

achievements of one of the world’s

greatest civilisations.

The Story Behind the Legend

Tutankhamun became Pharaoh of

Egypt at around nine years old and

ruled during the 18th Dynasty more

than 3,300 years ago. Although his

reign lasted only around ten years

before his death at the age of 18 or

19, it was the discovery of his tomb

thousands of years later that secured

his place in history.

In 1922, British archaeologist Howard

Carter uncovered Tutankhamun’s

remarkably intact tomb after years

of searching in Egypt’s Valley of the

Kings. Hidden beneath the desert

sands for more than three millennia,

the tomb contained over 5,000 objects,

including jewellery, statues, ceremonial

artefacts, furniture, chariots and the

iconic gold funerary mask that has

become one of the most recognisable

symbols of Ancient Egypt.

12 | www.minervamagazines.co.uk

Unlike many royal tombs that had

been looted over the centuries,

Tutankhamun’s burial chamber

remained largely untouched, providing

historians and archaeologists with an

extraordinary insight into life, death

and royal customs during Egypt’s

New Kingdom. The discovery sparked

worldwide fascination and inspired

countless books, documentaries and

exhibitions, with interest in the boy

king continuing to this day.

An Immersive Journey Through

Ancient Egypt

Rather than simply displaying artefacts

in glass cases, Tutankhamun: The

Immersive Exhibition uses modern

technology to transport visitors back

in time.

The experience unfolds across seven

themed galleries, each exploring a

different aspect of Ancient Egyptian

history and the remarkable story

behind the discovery of Tutankhamun’s

tomb. Spectacular floor-to-ceiling

digital projections, atmospheric sound

and cinematic storytelling recreate the

temples, landscapes and monuments

of Ancient Egypt, allowing visitors to

experience the sights and atmosphere

of a civilisation that flourished

thousands of years ago.

One of the exhibition’s highlights is

its impressive 360-degree immersive

projection room, where dazzling visuals

and music combine to tell the story of

Tutankhamun in a truly memorable way.

Rather than simply reading about history,

visitors are surrounded by it, creating an

experience that is both educational and

entertaining.

The exhibition also features interactive

elements and an optional virtual reality

adventure, giving visitors the chance

to explore ancient temples, descend

into hidden tombs and journey through

the fascinating beliefs surrounding the

Egyptian afterlife. It’s an innovative way

of connecting modern audiences with

one of history’s most enduring stories.

Discover Ancient Egyptian Life

While Tutankhamun is undoubtedly the

star of the exhibition, the experience

also explores the wider world of Ancient

Egypt.

Visitors can learn about everyday

life along the River Nile, the role

of the pharaohs, religious beliefs,

mummification, monumental architecture

and the incredible craftsmanship that

produced some of history’s most

beautiful treasures. Informative displays

explain the symbolism behind many

of the objects discovered within the

tomb and reveal why they were placed

alongside the young king for his journey

into the afterlife.

Detailed replicas of many of

Tutankhamun’s treasures allow visitors

to appreciate the extraordinary artistry

of Ancient Egyptian craftsmen, while

authentic artefacts help place the

famous discovery into its wider historical

context.

A Day Out for All Ages

The exhibition has been carefully

designed to engage visitors of every

age, making it an ideal destination for

families during the summer holidays

as well as anyone with an interest in

history, archaeology or culture.

Children can enjoy hands-on activities,

discover how hieroglyphics worked,

learn about Egyptian mythology and

explore interactive displays that make

history both accessible and fun.

Meanwhile, adults will appreciate the

depth of historical information and

the opportunity to experience one of

archaeology’s greatest discoveries

through an innovative and immersive

format.

Whether you’re already fascinated by

Ancient Egypt or simply looking for a

unique day out, there’s something here

to capture everyone’s imagination.

Planning Your Visit

Tutankhamun: The Immersive

Exhibition is at the NEC Birmingham

until 13 September 2026, with visitors

advised to allow around 90 minutes to

enjoy the full experience.

The exhibition is fully accessible

and conveniently located within the

NEC complex, just a short walk from

Birmingham International railway

station, making it easy to reach from

across the Midlands and beyond.

Tickets should be booked in advance,

with entry available in timed slots

throughout the day. For more

WHY foster carers matteR

A Young Person’s Experience with Abacus Fostering...

Promotional Partnership

When I was in Year 11, right before my mock

exams, an unexpected event left me in care

and completely turned my life upside down.

I still remember that Friday, lying in a hospital

bed, overwhelmed by worry. I was scared

about who I would be staying with and what

my future would look like.

That experience is why I want to talk to you

today about why having good foster parents

is so essential for young people.

After everything that happened, I found

myself in a very dark place. I felt alone,

isolated, and pessimistic. It seemed as

though everyone in my life had let me down.

During the journey to my foster carers’

house, countless questions raced through

my mind, and I felt completely lost..

When I stepped out of the car, I remember

seeing Eric’s warm and welcoming smile.

As I entered the house, I was searching for a

sense of belonging—a place to call home—

but at first, I didn’t feel it. After a while, our

social workers left, and we were left to get to

know one another. There was an awkward

silence in the air. After all, I knew nothing

about the people I was about to live with.

Later that day, we went to pick Monica

up. The moment she wrapped me in her

arms, something changed. I never realised

how much I needed that hug, and she will

probably never know how much it meant

to me. For the first time in a long while, I felt

that maybe I could be loved. It gave me a

glimmer of hope when all I had known was

darkness. It was as if the emptiness I had

been carrying inside me had finally begun

to fill.

My personal experience is enough to

convince me that foster carers are absolutely

essential in our society. Foster carers

need qualities such as patience, empathy,

resilience, kindness, and consistency,

alongside strong communication,

commitment, and problem-solving skills.

I would also like to discuss why foster carers

are so important. They provide children

like me with a safe, warm, and loving

home—something that every child deserves.

They provide the essentials we need,

such as food, water, and shelter, but they

also provide something just as important:

emotional support.

Before I came into care, my mental health

was struggling. Alongside the pressure

of school and exams, I was dealing with

difficulties at home. Having a safe and

loving environment lifted a huge weight

from my shoulders. The teenage years

are a crucial stage of development. They

are the years when we begin growing into

young adults, and having positive role

models and a stable home can have a

lasting impact on the people we become.

Good foster carers can inspire, influence,

and motivate young people to build a better

future for themselves. That is exactly what

Eric and Monica have done for me.

Unfortunately, the number of approved

foster carers has fallen significantly in

recent years. Since 2021, the number

of fostering households in England has

dropped considerably, creating a growing

shortage of foster carers. This means that

thousands of children are still waiting for a

safe place to call home and for someone to

make them feel loved, valued, and secure.

I haven’t had the best start in life. However,

with the support of the people around

me, my life is finally beginning to move

forward. But there are still many children

like me who are waiting for their own new

beginning.

Today, I am here to be their voice.

So, if you have ever considered fostering,

please think about taking that step. By

becoming a foster parent, you could

change a child’s life forever.

You can help make

a difference

We are passionate about finding a great home for

our foster children

Foster parents play a critical role in helping children heal. They show

children stability and teach them life lessons that last a lifetime - here at

Abacus Fostering, we take you through the fostering journey from being

approved as a foster carer to confidently caring for children in your own

home.

Our experienced team are here to provide you with the training, resources,

and guidance you need to make a positive difference in the lives of children

and young people in need. We believe that every child deserves a safe

and loving home. At Abacus Fostering we offer you the best support and

training to be able to care for a child in your home.

BBQ SHAWARMA

SPICED KING

OYSTER

MUSHROOMS

Plant-based BBQ perfection: spicy King Oyster

mushroom shawarma, charred over hot coals

and served with flatbreads, hummus, pickled

cucumbers and jalapeños for a fiery summer

feast. Serves 4.

Prep time: 10 mins (plus 30 mins to marinate)

Cooking time: 10 mins

INGREDIENTS:

500g King Oyster mushrooms

2 tsp smoked paprika

½ tsp chilli powder

1 tsp ground coriander

1 tsp ground turmeric

2 tsp ground cumin

½ tsp ground black pepper

½ tsp salt

2 tbsp olive oil

2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed

2 garlic cloves, unpeeled

2-3 red chillies

To serve:

½ large cucumber, thinly sliced

1 tsp sumac

1 tsp salt

Juice of ½ lemon

1 small bunch flat leaf parsley, finely chopped

4 large flatbreads

Hummus or Greek yoghurt

Pickled jalapeño peppers

METHOD:

A cast iron skillet is ideal for BBQ cooking

because it holds and distributes heat evenly,

helping the mushrooms cook in their juices while

developing soft centres and charred edges.

Toast the dry spices in the skillet for 2–3

minutes until fragrant, then mix with salt, olive

oil and crushed garlic. Halve the mushrooms

lengthways, score the cut sides, coat in the

spice mixture and marinate for at least 30

minutes.

For the pickled cucumber, mix cucumber with

sumac, salt, lemon juice and parsley, then

set aside. Return the skillet to the BBQ with

a little olive oil, garlic and chillies. Cook the

mushrooms cut side down for 4–5 minutes until

golden and charred, turning halfway.

Warm the flatbreads on the BBQ, spread

with hummus or Greek yoghurt, then top with

mushrooms, pickled cucumber, jalapeños and

chilli if using.

BBQ SLOW COOKED

BUTTERFLIED LEG

OF LAMB

Slow cooked over coals until meltingly tender,

this is the ultimate method to cook a timeless

classic. Marinate the shoulder of lamb

overnight with anchovies, garlic and rosemary

to enhance the sweet flavour. Serves 4-6.

Prep time: 15 minutes (plus overnight

marinating)

Cooking time: 2-2 ½ hours (approximately)

INGREDIENTS:

2kg shoulder of lamb, deboned and

butterflied

2 tbsp olive oil

6 anchovy fillets

3 garlic cloves, peeled and cut in slivers

1 large bunch of rosemary

Black pepper

2 tbsp runny honey

50 ml dry sherry (optional)

You will need a large cast iron skillet and a

BBQ with a lid.

METHOD:

Using a small sharp knife, make deep incisions

in the lamb surface.

Place the olive oil and anchovy fillets in a small

food processor and blitz to make a paste.

Place the lamb shoulder in a shallow dish and

rub with the paste. Insert the rosemary and

garlic into the incisions. Add black pepper,

drizzle over the honey and sherry and cover.

Place in the fridge to marinate overnight.

The following day, remove the lamb from the

fridge two hours before you’re ready to cook,

to reach room temperature.

Preheat the BBQ. You will need plenty of coals

to maintain the heat over a couple of hours.

Place the skillet on the BBQ and preheat for

10 minutes.

Add the lamb to the skillet and close the

lid. Cook for approximately 2 to 2 ½ hours

or until the lamb is tender. The meat when

probed with a meat thermometer should reach

80°C-85°C.

Open the lid and cook for approximately

10 minutes until the surface of the meat

caramelises. Remove from the heat, cover and

rest for at least ½ hour. To serve, simply pull

apart with two forks and spoon over any juices.

GRIDDLED

AUBERGINES

Chargrilling aubergine adds

a smoky flavour that, when

paired with the sharp tang of

sumac, creates a perfect blend

that can be complemented

with salty, creamy whipped

feta. Sumac is a spice used

in Middle Eastern cuisine that

adds a lemony taste. Adding

pomegranate seeds injects an

extra twist of tart sweetness

that further enhances the dish.

Serves 4 as a starter.

Prep time: 5 mins

Cooking time: 10 mins

INGREDIENTS:

2 large aubergines, cut into

quarters lengthwise

2 tbsp olive oil

Sea salt

3 tsp Sumac

1 small bunch fresh mint,

leaves picked

Pomegranate seeds

To serve

Whipped feta and chilli oil

(optional)

Warm flatbreads

METHOD:

Brush the aubergines with oil

and season with salt. Sprinkle

liberally with sumac.

Cook directly on the hot BBQ

grill, or in a smoking-hot griddle

pan, for 3–4 minutes on each

side until charred, golden and

soft. If cooking over the BBQ,

keep the slices fairly thick so

they hold their shape, and

brush with a little extra oil if

needed.

To make the whipped feta,

place 200g feta, 150g Greek

yoghurt and 2 tbsp extra

virgin olive oil in a small food

processor. Blend until smooth

and creamy.

Serve the charred aubergine

with whipped feta, warm

flatbreads, fresh mint,

pomegranate seeds and a

drizzle of chilli oil.

Dreaming of a space that feels refined, stylish and effortlessly put together? That’s exactly what the owners

of this stunning guest en-suite envisioned and Designer Gurnaam from Ripples Solihull delivered. With a

brief for hotel-inspired luxury and a blend of practical features and elegant finishes, the result is a bathroom

that’s as enjoyable to use as it is to admire.

Effortless Design

for Everyday Living

Every element has been thoughtfully

chosen to create a space that’s

welcoming, well-balanced and

perfectly suited to modern living.

Large-format, marble-effect tiles

sweep across the walls and furniture,

giving the room a clean, cohesive look

while enhancing the sense of space.

Their timeless design brings a refined

feel, while also being durable and

easy to maintain - ideal for a well-used

guest suite.

With its sloped ceiling, this room

required a tailored approach. A

bespoke vanity unit runs the length

of the wall, providing generous surface

space without overpowering the room,

while a built-in shelf beneath, finished

in matching tile, adds discreet,

seamless storage.

A frameless walk-in shower keeps

the space feeling open, with a

rainfall head, hand shower and

built-in shelving offering comfort

and convenience. Thoughtfully

layered lighting, including fluted

glass pendants, wall lights and a

large skylight, adds both warmth and

atmosphere, enhancing the room’s

calm, airy feel.

“The goal was to design a space that

felt inviting and effortless, while still

delivering on all the practical needs

of a guest en-suite. It’s proof

that functionality and

style don’t have to be

at odds - they can work

beautifully together.”

says Gurnaam, Designer

at Ripples Solihull.

FINISHING TOUCHES:

The Details That Make a Home

Not every home transformation

begins with building work, new

layouts or major investment. Often,

it is the smaller details — the

carefully chosen light fitting, the

fabric that softens a room, the

mirror that changes the sense of

space — that make a home feel

truly finished.

Finishing touches bring comfort,

character and cohesion. They are

the layers that turn a practical

space into somewhere warm,

welcoming and personal.

LIGHTING THE

WAY

Lighting has one of the biggest

impacts on the atmosphere of a

home. A room can feel entirely

different depending on how it is lit,

from bright and practical during

the day to soft and inviting in the

evening.

Rather than relying on one central

light, consider layers. Table

lamps, wall lights, pendants and

carefully placed floor lamps can

all help create depth and warmth.

In kitchens and bathrooms, task

lighting is essential, while in living

rooms

and

bedrooms,

softer lighting can

instantly make a space

feel more relaxed.

THE POWER OF

PAINT

Colour is one of the easiest ways

to update a home without changing

everything. Earthy browns,

terracottas and deep chocolate

tones add instant depth, especially

alongside timber floors and layered

textiles. Restorative greens, from

smoky jade to rich teal, bring an

organic calm, while buttery yellows

add gentle joy and optimism. For

something bolder, deep reds, wines

and plums create a more dramatic,

elevated feel, while warm off-whites

offer a soft, comforting base for

brass accents, pale woods and

natural textures.

SOFTNESS,

TEXTURE AND

COMFORT

Soft furnishings are where a home

begins to feel lived in. Cushions,

throws, curtains, rugs and

upholstery all introduce texture,

colour and comfort, helping to

soften harder surfaces and

bring a scheme together.

A new rug can define a

seating area, curtains can

make a room feel taller and

warmer, and cushions can

add personality in a way

that is easy to update over

time.

CHARACTER IN

THE DETAILS

The most memorable homes are

rarely the most perfect. They are

the ones with character: artwork

collected over time, books on

shelves, ceramics, candles, flowers,

family pieces and objects that tell

a story.

Accessories should feel considered

rather than cluttered. Grouping items

in odd numbers, varying height and

texture, and leaving space around

favourite pieces can help a room feel

styled without being overdone.

BRINGING IT ALL

TOGETHER

The key to successful finishing

touches is cohesion. Colours do

not have to match exactly, but

they should speak to one another.

Materials, tones and textures should

flow gently from room to room,

creating a sense of ease throughout

the home.

Sometimes, it is not about changing

everything — it is about choosing

the details that make a house feel

unmistakably like home.

THE ART OF ENTERTAINING

As doors open onto gardens

and long evenings stretch into

night, homes come into their

own. Summer is the season when

kitchens become gathering spaces,

gardens turn into dining rooms, and

even the simplest supper can feel

like an occasion.

From beautifully designed kitchens

brings together the local experts

helping homeowners host with

the key is to think beyond how a

INDOOR-OUTDOOR

LIVING

When the weather is kind, the

garden becomes another room.

Sliding or bi-fold doors, sheltered

terraces, outdoor kitchens, dining

sets and comfortable seating areas

can completely change the way

a home is enjoyed through the

warmer months.

Even small updates can have a big

impact. Planters, lighting, cushions,

shade and a defined dining area

can make an outdoor space feel

inviting and considered, without

losing that relaxed summer feeling.

SETTING THE

SCENE

Entertaining well does not have to

mean making everything formal.

Often, it is the little details that

make guests feel welcome: a

beautifully laid table, fresh flowers,

comfortable chairs, warm lighting,

chilled drinks and somewhere easy

for people to gather.

Practical touches matter too. Think

about shade in the day, warmth as

evening falls, and enough lighting

to carry the atmosphere after

sunset. Firepits, lanterns, parasols,

throws and outdoor heaters can

all help make the most of those

long summer evenings and festoon

lights and solar powered devices

are great options.

STYLE THAT LASTS

A home designed for entertaining

should still feel personal and

liveable. Rather than chasing

trends, focus on quality pieces,

thoughtful design and spaces that

suit the way you actually live.

Whether it is a new kitchen, an

improved garden layout, stylish

furniture, specialist glazing, interior

accessories or expert advice on

finishing touches, local businesses

can help create spaces that feel

welcoming all year round.

This summer, The Art of

Entertaining is about making

hosting feel effortless —

and making the most of the

around you.

NOTES FROM THE

Garden

Keep your garden glowing

through summer...

July and August can be glorious months in the garden,

but they can also be challenging. Long dry spells, intense

sunshine and time away on holiday can quickly leave pots,

lawns and borders looking tired. A little preparation, however,

can help keep outdoor spaces healthy, colourful and easy to

enjoy.

Watering well is the first step. Rather than giving plants a

light sprinkle every day, water deeply and less often, ideally

early in the morning or later in the evening. This encourages

roots to grow down into the soil and reduces water lost

through evaporation. Pots, hanging baskets and newly

planted shrubs will need the most attention, as they dry out

far more quickly than established borders.

Mulching is one of the simplest ways to protect plants in

summer. A layer of compost, bark or gravel around the base

of plants helps lock in moisture, suppress weeds and keep

roots cooler during hot weather.

Deadheading is another quick job with big rewards.

Removing faded flowers from roses, dahlias, cosmos,

geraniums and bedding plants encourages new blooms and

keeps displays looking fresh for longer. Regular feeding,

particularly for plants in containers, will also help maintain

colour into late summer.

Before going away, group pots together in a lightly shaded

spot and water thoroughly. Consider using water-retaining

gel, saucers or a simple drip irrigation system if you will be

away for more than a few days.

Finally, do not be too quick to cut everything back.

Seedheads, grasses and late-flowering perennials can add

structure, support wildlife and carry the garden beautifully

into autumn.

Understanding Where You Are

One of the most common questions I hear in clinic is:

“Am I in perimenopause or menopause?”

Many women use the terms interchangeably, but they describe

different stages of the same natural transition. Understanding

where you are on that journey can help explain symptoms

such as anxiety, brain fog, poor sleep, irregular periods and hot

flushes, while helping you access the right support sooner.

IT’S NOT ONE MOMENT – IT’S A JOURNEY

The menopause transition is a gradual process that unfolds

over several years and affects every woman differently.

Perimenopause is the stage leading up to menopause.

During this time, the ovaries gradually produce lower levels

of reproductive hormones, particularly oestrogen and

progesterone. However, these hormones do not simply decline

in a smooth, predictable way. Instead, they fluctuate, sometimes

dramatically.

Menopause, by contrast, is a specific milestone. It is officially

reached when a woman has gone 12 consecutive months

without a menstrual period.

Put simply: “Perimenopause is the transition. Menopause is

the milestone.”

THE HORMONAL ROLLERCOASTER

One of the biggest misconceptions about perimenopause is that

hormone levels steadily fall. In reality, oestrogen levels often rise

and fall unpredictably, while progesterone gradually declines

as ovulation becomes less regular. These fluctuations are

responsible for many of the symptoms women experience.

For many women, perimenopause is actually the most

symptomatic part of the menopause journey.

Common symptoms include:

• Irregular periods

• Hot flushes and night sweats

• Anxiety and mood changes

• Brain fog and difficulty concentrating

• Sleep disturbance

• Fatigue

• Joint aches

• Reduced libido

• Vaginal dryness

Many women are surprised to learn that symptoms can begin

years before their periods change significantly. As a result,

perimenopause is often mistaken for stress, ageing or simply

having too much on.

REACHING MENOPAUSE

Menopause is reached after 12 consecutive months without a

period. By this stage, ovarian activity has significantly declined,

ovulation has stopped and natural fertility has ended. The

average age of menopause in the UK is 51.

Although some symptoms improve after menopause, others

may continue. The key difference is that hormone levels tend to

remain consistently low rather than fluctuating dramatically.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHICH STAGE YOU’RE IN?

The biggest clue is usually your menstrual cycle.

If you are still having periods, even if they are irregular, you

are likely to be in perimenopause. If you have gone 12 months

without a period, you have reached menopause. For women

using Promotional certain Partnership forms of hormonal contraception or hormone

replacement therapy (HRT), determining menopausal status can

be more complex and specialist advice may be helpful.

DO YOU NEED A BLOOD TEST?

Usually not. For most women over 45, perimenopause and

menopause are diagnosed based on symptoms, age and changes

in menstrual patterns. Because hormone levels fluctuate so much

during perimenopause, a single blood test often provides limited

information and can sometimes be misleading. Testing may be

appropriate in younger women, those with suspected premature

menopause, or when the diagnosis is unclear.

LOOKING BEYOND SYMPTOMS

Menopause is about much more than periods and hot flushes.

Lower oestrogen levels can affect bone strength, cardiovascular

health and urogenital wellbeing. Recognising perimenopause

early can help women understand what is happening, seek

support sooner and make informed decisions about treatment

and future health. For many women, HRT can be an effective

treatment for symptoms such as hot flushes, sleep disturbance,

anxiety, brain fog and joint pain. However, treatment should

always be individualised, and non-hormonal options are also

available.

A FINAL THOUGHT

Perimenopause and menopause are different stages of the same

natural transition, but understanding the distinction can make a

huge difference to how women experience this phase of life.

Alongside any treatment, whether hormonal or not, healthy

lifestyle habits, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, good

sleep, stress management and avoiding smoking -remain the

foundation of menopause care.

If you’re struggling with symptoms or feeling unsure about

where you are on the journey, you’re not alone. With the

right information, support and treatment, most women can

feel significantly better and navigate this stage with greater

confidence.

LIVING

WELL

WITH

DEMENTIA

ADVERTISING FEATURE

A diagnosis of

dementia can feel

overwhelming - not

only for the person

affected, but for the

family and friends

around them.

It often brings difficult questions about

independence, safety, future care and

quality of life. Yet while dementia is

a life-changing condition, it does not

mean life stops being meaningful,

active or connected.

Across the UK, more families are

now looking for care and support

that goes beyond simply managing

symptoms. The focus is increasingly

on helping people live well: maintaining

familiar routines, preserving dignity,

encouraging social connection and

offering reassurance to loved ones who

may be navigating care decisions for

the first time.

Dementia affects people in different

ways. Some may experience memory

loss, confusion or difficulty finding

words, while others may notice

changes in mood, confidence or

behaviour. Because the condition can

progress gradually, families often find

themselves adapting step by step —

perhaps beginning with extra help at

home, before later considering more

structured care.

For many people, remaining in their

own home for as long as possible is an

important priority. Care at home services

can make this possible by providing

practical help with daily routines, such

as washing, dressing, meals, medication

reminders, light household tasks and

transport to appointments. They can

also offer companionship, which is

especially important for those at risk of

becoming isolated.

But good care at home is about far

more than ticking off a list of tasks.

For someone living with dementia, a

familiar face, a calm approach and

an understanding of their life story

can make a significant difference.

Carers who take time to learn about

someone’s routines, preferences, past

experiences and anxieties are often

better able to reduce distress and

encourage confidence.

As needs increase, specialist

care homes can offer a safe and

supportive environment designed

around the realities of dementia.

Many now provide dedicated

dementia communities, with staff

trained to understand memory loss,

communication difficulties and the

emotional impact of the condition.

The best settings combine safety with

warmth — creating spaces that feel

homely rather than clinical, with clear

layouts, secure gardens, meaningful

activities and quiet areas for relaxation.

Activities play an important role in

dementia care. Music, gardening,

gentle exercise, baking, art,

reminiscence sessions and visits from

local groups can all help stimulate

memory, lift mood and create moments

of joy. Even when someone struggles

to remember recent events, they may

still respond strongly to music from

their younger years, familiar scents,

photographs or simple shared routines.

Retirement communities can also

offer valuable support, particularly

“Good care is not

simply practical;

it is personal.”

for couples or individuals who want

independence with reassurance close

at hand. Some provide flexible care

packages that can adapt over time,

allowing residents to enjoy their own

private space while benefiting from

social activities, communal dining,

wellbeing services and access to help

when needed.

For relatives, making care decisions

can be emotionally difficult. Feelings

of guilt, worry and uncertainty are

common, especially when deciding

whether a loved one needs more help

than the family can provide alone.

Seeking advice early can make the

process less daunting. Speaking to

care providers, dementia specialists,

GPs, local support groups or charities

can help families understand the

options available and plan ahead

rather than waiting for a crisis.

Living well with dementia is about

recognising the person behind

the diagnosis — their memories,

relationships, tastes, humour and

individuality. With the right support,

people can continue to experience

comfort, companionship and purpose,

while families feel less alone in the

journey.

CLEARER SIGHT,

GREATER

INDEPENDENCE

Changes in eyesight are often accepted as

an inevitable part of getting older. Reading

becomes harder, colours seem less bright, night

driving feels more difficult, or there may be a

sense that the world is becoming a little more

cloudy. For many people, these changes happen

gradually, which means they can be easy to

dismiss.

But good vision plays a far bigger role in

everyday life than simply helping us see clearly.

It affects confidence, balance, communication,

independence and the ability to stay connected

with the world around us.

Promotional Partnership

WHY VISION MATTERS IN LATER LIFE

For older adults, untreated sight problems can have a

particularly significant impact. Reduced vision may make

it harder to read, recognise faces, move safely around the

home, judge steps and kerbs, prepare meals, enjoy hobbies

or feel confident going out alone.

Over time, this can lead to people doing less, socialising less

and becoming more dependent on others.

WHEN EYESIGHT AFFECTS CONFIDENCE

There is growing awareness of the link between vision

and wider wellbeing. Eye health experts have warned that

undiagnosed sight problems can worsen confusion, anxiety

and loss of independence in people living with dementia.

In some cases, symptoms caused by poor eyesight may be

mistaken for ageing or cognitive decline, when a treatable eye

condition may also be playing a part.

COULD CATARACTS BE THE CAUSE?

Common conditions such as cataracts are a good example.

Cataracts occur when the natural lens of the eye becomes

cloudy, causing blurred or misty vision, glare from lights,

faded colours and difficulty seeing clearly at night.

Because cataracts usually develop slowly, many people adapt

without realising how much their sight has changed.

TREATMENT CAN MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE

Once cataracts begin to interfere with daily life, treatment can

make a dramatic difference. Cataract surgery is one of the

most commonly performed procedures in the UK and involves

replacing the cloudy natural lens with a clear artificial one.

For many patients, the result is brighter, clearer vision and a

renewed sense of confidence.

A SIMPLE EYE EXAMINATION

COULD BE THE FIRST STEP

TOWARDS CLEARER SIGHT — AND

GREATER INDEPENDENCE.

THE IMPORTANCE OF REGULAR EYE CHECKS

Regular eye examinations are an important first step. They

can identify cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular

degeneration and other conditions that may not be

immediately obvious.

Early diagnosis means people can be monitored, advised and

treated at the right time, rather than waiting until vision loss

begins to affect everyday life.

SIGNS FAMILIES SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR

Families and carers also have an important role to play. If an

older relative seems more hesitant on stairs, has stopped

reading, struggles to recognise people, complains about

glare, avoids going out after dark or appears more withdrawn,

it may be worth considering whether their eyesight has

changed.

CLEAR SIGHT, BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE

Protecting vision is not just about eye health. It is about

helping people stay active, independent and involved in the

life they enjoy.

Whether that means reading the paper, driving safely,

recognising a grandchild’s face, enjoying the garden or simply

moving around the home with confidence, clear sight can

have a powerful effect on quality of life.

Rather than accepting changes in vision as “just part of

ageing”, it is always worth seeking professional advice. A

simple eye examination could be the first step towards clearer

sight — and greater independence.

What happens to your

property when you die?

Understanding what happens to a loved one’s

property when they die can be challenging,

especially during an already emotional time.

Having a clear outline of the key stages can make

the process more manageable and help reduce

uncertainty during a difficult period...

How is the Property Owned?

The first step is identifying how the property was owned. In

most cases, property is usually held as Joint Tenants, Tenants in

Common, or Sole Ownership.

If the property was held as Joint Tenants, the surviving owner

automatically inherits the deceased’s share through the ‘Right of

Survivorship’. If it was held as Tenants in Common, each person

owns a defined share, and the deceased’s share passes under

their Will or, if there is no Will, under intestacy rules. Where

the deceased owned the property outright, it will pass entirely

according to the Will or intestacy rules.

Is a Grant of Probate Necessary?

Even though ownership can pass without the need for probate,

the property cannot be sold or transferred until a Grant of

Probate is (or Letters of Administration are) issued. The Grant

gives the Executor or Administrator the legal authority to sell or

transfer the property.

Valuing the Estate

Executors must gather accurate information about the estate,

including obtaining a property valuation, assessing debts and

identifying any tax liabilities. These details are required when

Promotional Partnership

applying for the Grant. If there is no Will, the closest eligible

family member can apply to become Administrator. Until then,

the Public Trustee temporarily protects the estate.

Selling the Property

Once the Grant is issued, the Executor or Administrator can

sell or transfer the property. A Conveyancer will act for them,

verify their authority and handle the legal transfer. Sale proceeds

are paid to the Executors or Administrators, who must then

distribute funds correctly under the Will or intestacy rules. As an

Executor or Administrator, it is important to ensure all debts, tax

and liabilities are settled before distributing the estate.

If you’re dealing with a loved one’s estate and are not sure

where to start, please contact our Private Client and Residential

Property teams at hello@se-solicitors.co.uk.

Lighting that helps you sleep

Did you know 1 in 5 people with dementia experience sundowning syndrome,

sometimes called late-day confusion? And 1 in 15 people in the UK struggle

with Seasonal Affective Disorder, known as SAD syndrome.

These conditions can impact concentration, energy, memory, mood and sleep.

At Woodside Care Village in Warwick, we use circadian lighting to minimise

these symptoms.

What is circadian lighting?

It’s lighting that mimics the

natural rhythm of daylight, with

a brighter, white light during the

day and a softer, orange glow in

the evening that tells your body

it’s time to rest.

How does circadian lighting

help care home residents?

Better sleeping patterns mean

people are more active and eat

better during the day

Reduced agitation and sundowning

symptoms create a calmer

environment for everyone
