A small plane is flying

from Dallas to Denver

when the engine

The pilot runs out of

the cockpit, grabs

Every Fourth of July, I tell myself I’m going to keep

things simple. Then somehow I end up hosting, cooking,

cleaning, organizing games, and stressing about

whether everyone is having a good time. How can I

enjoy the holiday instead of managing it?

– Frazzled in Freeport

Dear Frazzled,

Ah yes, a classic human problem.

You start by planning a relaxing holiday and somehow

end up acting as cruise director, chef, event coordinator,

weather forecaster, and cleanup crew.

As a dog, I approach gatherings a little differently. My

responsibilities are limited to greeting guests, accepting

compliments, and strategically positioning myself near the

food table. It’s a system that’s served me well for ten years.

Here’s my advice: remember why you’re gathering in the

first place. Most people aren’t coming for perfectly folded

napkins or a magazine-worthy backyard. They’re coming

to spend time together.

Nobody will remember if the burgers were served five minutes

late. They will remember laughing with family, watching

fireworks, sharing stories, and enjoying a summer day.

So give yourself permission to simplify. Buy the potato

salad instead of making it. Let someone else bring dessert.

Skip anything that’s causing more stress than joy.

And if you find yourself overwhelmed, try my favorite holiday

strategy: find a comfortable chair, grab a cold drink,

and spend a few minutes doing absolutely nothing.

It’s amazing how often that’s exactly what humans need.
