Mundt recovering after ‘freak accident’

Elizabeth Mundt is slowly

getting back on the horse

after sustaining a serious

concussion while riding.

Mundt was found

unconscious on her property

near Lincoln by her husband

Neil, on the afternoon of

King’s Birthday.

The Ellesmere Ward

councillor was riding the horse

back to the shed when it got

spooked and threw her off.

“It was a freak accident,” she

said.

Mundt has no recollection

of what spooked the horse or

hitting her head.

Neil realised something must

have happened when he found

the horse near the shed with its

bridle on, but no sign of Mundt.

“The horse was just standing

around the shed so I thought,

what’s going on here, then

I went around the shed and

saw Elizabeth on the ground,”

he said.

“It initially didn’t concern

me until she asked me what

happened.”

When Mundt first sat up, she

started vomiting.

“I felt incredibly sick, worse

than any sickness I’ve had.”

Neil, who has first aid

training, called an ambulance.

Most urban properties will

be hit with an 8.8% combined

increase from council rates and

Selwyn Water charges.

The rise is made up of a

4.5% increase in rates and an

18% increase in sewerage and

drinking water charges from

Selwyn Water Ltd.

The 8.8% weighted average is

down from the 13.3% forecast

in the 2024-34 Long Term Plan.

On Tuesday, the council

unanimously approved its

Annual Plan, which sets out

the rates increase and key

spending priorities for the next

12 months.

Selwyn Water’s board signed

off its Water Services Strategy,

similar to an annual plan, last

week.

A rating example for an

$820,000 home in Rolleston

shows a council rates bill of

$3198, an increase of $148 from

last year.

The Selwyn Water bill for the

same property will be $1831,

including 257m³ of water, up

$280 from what the council

previously charged.

The volumetric charge has

increased 18.4% from $1.25 to

$1.48 a cubic metre.

Crikey, there are some

Merger discussion held in secret

Mayor Lydia Gliddon has

defended taking a briefing on

possible amalgamation partners

behind closed doors.

The council has until August 9

to submit its proposal for how it

will amalgamate with neighbouring

districts or make a case to be

a unitary authority as part of the

Government restructuring local

government.

The public-excluded

briefing followed a large community

response to a council

survey which received 6900

submissions.

Initial survey results show 46%

of respondents asked the council

to explore amalgamating with

other neighbouring councils, and

becoming a Selwyn-based unitary

authority.

Other results from the survey

included 34% of responses

said only to explore becoming

a Selwyn-based unitary

authority, and 13.2% said the

council should only look at

amalgamation.

The majority of submissions

(36%) came from Rolleston, followed

by Lincoln (16.5%) and

West Melton (8.5%).

Gliddon said the briefing was

held in public excluded to allow

councillors to discuss early-stage

ideas, information relating to

commercially sensitive council

operations, and receive “free and

frank” advice from staff.

While no decisions were made,

two likely options are Selwyn

councillor Sam MacDonald made

headlines for suggesting Selwyn

and Waimakariri residents

should be tolled if they do not

amalgamate with Christchurch.

Gliddon did not respond

directly to a Selwyn Times

question if the MacDonald controversy

was factor in going

behind closed doors.

All she would say was: “We

want elected members to be able

to test theories and assumptions

without them being taken out of

context.”

Councillor Samuel Wilshire,

who hit back at MacDonald at the

time, did not believe it had any

effect on it being a closed-door

meeting.

“It was more of a workshop;

there were no decisions made;

it was just sound boarding ideas

with staff,” he said.

Gliddon said a public briefing

will be held on July 15, which

will include all information that

is not commercially sensitive,

including survey results, next

steps and further community

engagement.

“We have been very open with

the community on our process

and will continue to do so as we

work through this important

work,” she said.

Submitters’ top three

priorities were affordable rates,

reliable services, and effective

management of regional services.

Chief executive confirmed

Steve Gibling has been appointed as

the council’s chief executive. He has

been in the interm role since January

after Sharon Mason resigned.

Gibling’s salary is $350,000

compared to Mason, who was paid

$374,000. Mayor Lydia Gliddon said

the appointment followed a robust

recruitment process and reflected

the council’s strong confidence in

Gibling’s leadership. Gibling said

he was proud to take on the role

permanently.

Fewer Lincoln nightworks

Noise complaints have prompted

a shift away from nightworks in

Lincoln’s town centre. Council

infrastructure and property executive

director Tim Mason said there have

been three noise complaints in

the last month. “Feedback led us

to shift some activities from night

to daytime, balancing impacts on

businesses during the day and

residents at night.” Mason said night

works will still be required at times,

for example when the water may

need to be shut off. He said stage

one of the upgrade is on track to be

completed in September.

Leeston Rd closure

From Monday, Leeston Rd will be

closed from Goulds Rd to just past

East Maddisons Rd until August 14

to install a new culvert under the

road. The council said the limited

capacity in the existing culvert

is not sufficient, contributing to

flooding and road closures. The

detour is via Ellesmere Junction

and Goulds Rds.

Lower Huts bach

owners in fight

for their survival

Another lakeside settlement has

started a fight to stay.

Residents of the Lower

Selwyn Huts, on the edge of

Te Waihora Lake Ellesmere,

are asking the Department of

Conservation to reconsider its

decision not to renew any leases

beyond 10 years.

To support their case, residents

have engaged

environmental lawyer

Clare Lenihan, who

played a key role in the

Upper Selwyn Huts’ successful

bid to remain at

their settlement for at

least 30 years.

The Lower Selwyn

Huts Owners Association

lodged a submission

with DOC in October 2024

seeking a minimum 20-year

extension to its concession.

But in March this year, DOC

announced it had granted 44

bach owners a 10-year concession

to occupy the land, after

which they would be required

to remove their structures and

leave.

Unlike the Upper Selwyn

Huts, most baches are not used

full-time. Of the 44, four are

permitted full-time residence to

provide security for the remaining

huts.

In July last year, nearby

Greenpark Huts residents were

forced to leave after failing to

secure a deal with Ngāi Tahu.

Legal documents provided to

the Selwyn Times outline seven

grounds for reconsideration,

including alleged legal misinterpretation,

failure to properly

consider a 20-year option,

and claims there is no

evidence of a material

difference in sea-level

impacts between a

10-year and 20-year

concession.

“The principal longterm

issue, sea level rise,

is not expected to become

material until the latter

part of this century,” the

documents state.

has a strong case to remain.

“The community feels DOC’s

decision was predetermined,

and we have proof to support

that, and proof the community

has not been treated fairly, and

no goodwill was shown during

this process,” he said.

settlement in 10 years.

being let down and abandoned

by DOC.”

The reconsideration request

also states residents provided

expert evidence from a

registered surveyor which was

not presented to the decisionmaker,

DOC regulatory services

director Phillipa Fox.

DOC permissions lead

Christine Butler said she

could not comment while the

reconsideration process was

under way.

Following the decision, Fox said

the huts community had flooded

eight times since 2013.

“Long-term occupation of this

site is not viable due to sea and

corresponding lake-level rise.

When considering the term of

the lease, we also wanted to give

the hut owners an appropriate

amount of time to demolish or

move their huts,” she said.

Hewson said the settlement

has existed for more than 100

years and residents have invested

heavily in it.

“We paid for the original street

light in the settlement, paid for

the well to be put in for water,

which has just been upgraded

to New Zealand community

drinking water standards.

“We have a tractor with a

mower on it to mow the grass

in the reserve and have used it

to mow 3km of roadside grass,

holding tanks in place for grey

water and septic, that get pumped

by an outside contractor.

“All we are asking is to be

given a 20-year lease... so we can

pass it on to our children and

grandchildren like in the past, or

sell to new families that want to

enjoy the area.”

over Upper Huts licences

Upper Selwyn Huts residents and the

council say they are now working in

harmony after a long-running dispute

over the future of the settlement.

The council adopted a new 30-year

Upper Selwyn Huts deed of licence on

Tuesday, bringing relief to residents.

Selwyn Huts Owners Association

chairperson Graeme Young said the new

licence restores their dignity.

“(It’s) the restoration of our basic right

to live peacefully in our homes,” he said.

“For over 20 years the community at

the Selwyn Huts has been made to feel

like second-class citizens.

“The despise with which

we were held culminated

in the threat to have us

removed. In the face of

this we stood firm.”

In March 2024, the

council voted to require

residents to leave by

2039, but paused the

process in July for further

consultation.

In September last year,

Graeme Young

it confirmed at least a 30-year extension,

with work on the new licence ongoing

since.

Resident Kirrily Fea said there had

been a “seismic shift” since the election

of the new council.

“Since then, we have gone from being

a problem to be eliminated, to feeling

respected, valued, and listened to,” she

said.

“The new licence marks the end of

a challenging chapter for the historic

The decision was met with applause

from residents in the council chambers.

Mayor Lydia Gliddon called the new

licences a “partnership in good faith”

that allows the hut holders to get on

with their lives “and us to hop out of the

way”.

Council chief executive Steve Gibling

said the council had worked hard

to balance residents’ views with its

obligations.

“I think we have done that with

respect, and through a conversation

based on building relationships first,

and it’s a legal document second”.

Councillor Samuel Wilshire apologised

for the actions of previous councils

towards a community that has been

“treated appallingly”.

Gibling said the milestone would be

marked with a signing ceremony at the

settlement.

Mundt said she was drifting

Christchurch Hospital.

A month on from the accident

Mundt is easing back into

council work, but is unsure

when she will return to

attending meetings.

“Primarily I will be working

from home for the little while,

but I’ll still be meeting the odd

constituent.”

On Tuesday she sat in the

public gallery to support

residents from Upper Selwyn

Huts while the council was

approving the settlement’s new

deed of licence.

Mundt, who used to compete

in dressage, show jumping

and cross country events, said

she has had many falls over

the years but had never been

injured.

“I’ve always got up and

dusted myself off and walked

away.”

Mundt was glad she was

wearing a helmet.

“In my younger days we’d

often ride the horse back to the

paddock without a helmet, and

I’m really glad the importance

of having a helmet on has been

drummed into us by the pony

clubs,” she said.

The couple who got their retirement back

Patricia’s internal alarm goes off

at 5am every morning. It has done

this for 50 years.

Her eyes open. The bedroom is

still dark. The house is quiet except

for the first birds starting their

chorus. She’s awake. But she’s not

really awake.

“I lie there feeling like I’ve been

hit by a truck,” the 73-year-old

explains. “My body clock would

wake me up right on time, but the

rest of me hasn’t caught up.”

At 73, Patricia still tends to

her garden, takes daily walks

through town, and catches local

shows when they come through.

Her husband, 75, does the same.

They’re the kind of couple who’ve

been married so long they walk in

sync without thinking about it.

Retirement was supposed to be

their reward for decades of work.

“We earned this,” Patricia

says. “We did everything right.

Retirement was supposed to be

when we finally got to enjoy it all.”

But somewhere around 60, sleep

started changing. Not dramatically

at first, just lighter, less restorative.

Then her husband began

experiencing the same thing. Now

instead of waking at 5am ready

for the day, they were both waking

feeling drained and not excited for

the day.

The morning walks became

harder first. Then the garden

became a chore. By lunchtime,

they’d both be exhausted.

“The worst part was watching

each other decline,” Patricia

admits. “He was grumpy. I was

snappy. We just weren’t ourselves.”

The crystallising moment came

on a Thursday evening. They’d

bought tickets to a local show.

At 6:30pm, Patricia found her

husband asleep in his chair.

“I looked at him and thought,

I’m just as exhausted. What’s the

point?”

They didn’t go. Thirty dollars

wasted.

Her husband suggested they

accept it. “Maybe this is just being

in our 70s.”

But Patricia wasn’t ready to

accept that.

Scrolling online one morning,

Key flyover project on

track for 2027 finish

Another subdivision may be

on the way for fast-expanding

Darfield.

Mike Greer Homes has applied

for a resource consent to build 93

homes on an empty 8.1ha block

on the north side of the township.

The Horndon St section is

already zoned residential and

sits between the existing township

and the under-construction

Rylands subdivision.

The application to the council

states the subdivision called Malvern

Estates will be delivered in

five stages.

“The subdivision will create

93 new residential allotments

ranging in area from 501m² to

1067m², with an average net site

area of approximately 648m²,”

the application said.

“The subdivision will generate

positive economic activity

through the construction of the

subdivision infrastructure and

future residential dwellings,

creating employment opportunities

within the local construction

industry.”

Darfield has a population

of about 3600, but it could

grow to about 9500 in the next

10-15 years, with 2000 new

homes planned across several

subdivisions.

Darfield Residents Association

chair Harvey Polgalse said the

growth highlighted the need

for increased investment in

infrastructure and services such

as health facilities, which are

already under pressure with the

current population.

Initial work is under way on the

flyover over State Highway 1 in

Rolleston.

The project forms part of

stage two of the $180-200 million

programme to improve

access through Rolleston, and

is one of the Government’s

Roads of Regional Significance

projects.

Transport Minister Chris

Bishop said Rolleston was at the

heart of one of the fastest-growing

districts in New Zealand.

“SH1 currently carries around

24,000 vehicles per day, 11% of

which are heavy vehicles, with

expectations it could reach

33,000 over the next 20 years.

SH1 needs an upgrade to get

ahead of that growth, and we’re

getting on with it.”

Work on the flyover follows

completion of the Dunns Crossing

and Walkers Rd intersection

with SH1, which is now fully

open under temporary speed

restrictions. A pedestrian and

cycling subway beside the new

roundabout has also opened.

be completed by the end of

2027, while remaining work

on SH1 – including removal of

two signalised intersections

and upgrades to council-owned

a contractor site office being

established, tree removal taking

place, and an access track

installed. Piling is set to start

from October.

The second stage also

at Hoskyns Rd and Rolleston

Drive, extending the two

southbound motorway lanes

to just south of the bridge, and

upgrading the rail level crossing

at Hoskyns Rd.

Selwyn reduces rates rise to 4.5% in Annual Plan

Selwyn District councillors have adopted the district’s

Annual Plan on 30 June, confirming priorities, projects

and investment across Waikirikiri Selwyn, including an

average rates increase of around 4.5 percent.

The Annual Plan sets out what the Council will deliver

over the next 12 months, and how this work will be

funded, building on the direction set in the Long-Term

Plan 2024–2034.

Mayor Lydia Gliddon says the plan reflects strong

community feedback and a clear focus on balancing

affordability with delivering essential services.

“This plan is about getting the balance right. We know

households are feeling cost pressures, and we’ve worked

hard to keep that front of mind while still investing in the

infrastructure and services our district needs.”

Key decisions include:

• Setting an average rates increase of around 4.5 percent

• Continuing investment in core infrastructure, including

roads, water and wastewater

• Committing to increased investment in land drainage

and developing a fully integrated stormwater plan

through the Long-Term Plan

• Providing a $100,000 grant to support Lincoln town

centre businesses impacted by Stage One works

• Approving $160,000 to support the Sheffield Pool

through the community trust, following completion of

the land and pool settlement

• Reducing funding for Council events, saving $107,000,

and seeking external sponsorship opportunities

• Adopting a greater user pays approach, including

increases such as $8 for dog registrations and around

60 cents for some classes

• Community facilities will have reduced hours on public

holidays and over the Christmas period to manage

costs while keeping key services available.

Council agreed to a weighted average rates increase of

4.5% for the year. For households connected to Selwyn

Water Limited water services, when drinking water and

wastewater charges are included, the overall weighted

average increase could be 8.8% for 2026/27.

Rolleston flyover project gets underway

People living, working and travelling through Selwyn are

set to benefit from safer, more reliable journeys, as work

begins on major transport improvements in Rolleston.

Led by Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency

(NZTA), the Rolleston flyover project, will deliver a new

bridge over State Highway 1 and the railway, along with

wider highway upgrades. The project is expected to be

completed by the end of 2028.

Part of the Government’s Roads of Regional Significance

programme, the flyover will better connect Rolleston’s

township and industrial areas, improving access and

freight movement across the district.

Selwyn District Council has been supporting the

project since 2021 by upgrading key local roads.

Improvements have included widening sections of Levi,

Two Chain and Walkers Roads, and installing new traffic

signals at several intersections.

Council Executive Director Infrastructure and Property

Tim Mason says the investment is vital to support

Rolleston’s growth.

“This is a significant investment in Rolleston’s transport

network, and we’re pleased to see the next highway stage

getting underway.”

NZTA has appointed Fulton Hogan to deliver the flyover,

with early works beginning soon and bridge piling

scheduled to start in October. The flyover will connect

Rolleston Drive and Jones Road, crossing over both the

highway and railway line.

Recent milestones include the opening of a new

roundabout at Dunns Crossing Road, rail crossing

upgrades at Walkers Road, and completion of a

pedestrian and cycle subway under State Highway 1.

another crack at politics after

falling just short of making it

onto the council

last year.

The West Melton

resident is

running as an

independent.

Rakovic said

that means he

would not have to

tow a party line

and can advocate Zoran Rakovic

for local issues, which he

believes provides him an edge

Rakovic said the main issue

he is hearing about is infrastructure

not keeping up with

growth in schools, health facilities

and transport.

He has no preferences for

a National or Labour-led

to stand after seeing

an increased

shift towards

right-wing politics

in New Zealand.

“There are

NZ First on what a woman is,

which is directly form the US,”

she said.

De Anda lives in Halswell, but

said she is well connected to the

district with friends and family

in Selwyn.

Community, council come together

to restore historic flour mill site

The legacy of one of Canterbury’s

largest flour mills has been restored,

where a $473,000 redevelopment has

transformed the historic mill site into a

community heritage destination.

Lincoln was home to one of the largest

flour mills in Canterbury, owned by

pioneer flour miller Henry Moffat.

Moffat’s Mill operated between 1867

and 1921, and was powered by a large

water wheel in Ryelands Weir in the

Liffey Stream.

The council and its contractor CORDE

have been working with the Lincoln

and Districts Historical Society and

Lincoln Rotary to tidy and upgrade the

rundown site where the weir is located

and transform it into a beautiful spot for

the community to visit and learn about

Lincoln’s past.

A replica waterwheel, created by the

Rotary club, has been installed.

Next to the replica wheel sit the

original millstones used to grind grain

at the mill, which were previously on

display outside the Lincoln Library.

Councillor Denise Carrick said the

project means a lot to the community.

“It’s the reason Lincoln is here, so its

great to highlight the history of the town.

“It’s a project that has been worked on

for a long time so its great to see it come

together, and bring together council with

rotary and historic association,” she

said.

The reserve area has been tidied up

to allow better public access and the

timber pilings from the original weir

have been reused in the site upgrade.

The old broken weir has been replaced

with a new one, using 140 tonnes of

Rakaia River stone and a new fish passage

to better protect the fish life in the

Liffey Stream.

The work also included fixing the

eroding stream banks and native

planting.

Councillor Aaron McGlinchy was

pleased to see the “old collapsing weir

replaced and the bank stabilised”.

“Hopefully the walk to the water

wheel becomes something locals and

visitors will enjoy.”

The project, which got started in

March, cost $473,000, including the

consents.

The historical society is seeking old

photos of Moffat’s Mill.

Matariki lights warm

cold winter nights

Cool temperatures over the weekend did not deter families from turning

out in force for a spectacular light show in Rolleston.

The free event, organised by the council and sponsored by Orion, offered

an interactive evening of light displays and entertainment for all ages.

Held over three nights behind Te Ara Ātea, the event celebrated Matariki,

the Māori New Year, ahead of the public holiday on July 10.

‘Real chocolate’ key to success

Defending champion Jo Holmes

believes making a great hot

chocolate doesn’t require a secret

ingredient – just real chocolate.

The For Goodness Cake owner

is back to defend her Selwyn Hot

Chocolate Challenge title when

the annual competition starts on

Saturday.

Holmes has been serving her

award-winning Whittaker’s hot

chocolate for about 18 months.

“It’s just hard these days to get

a proper hot chocolate; they all

tend to use powders, and we just

don’t like that,” she said.

“It’s just a really good chocolatey

hot chocolate.”

The hot chocolate challenge,

run by the Ellesmere Promotions

Trust, has this year been

expanded across the district to

attract more entries.

Holmes wanted to create a

“supreme hot chocolate” for noncoffee

drinkers.

“People put so much effort

into coffee, so I wanted to do the

same for hot chocolate.”

Holmes opened her cake and

dessert cafe in 2023, achieving a

long-held dream.

“It was quite surreal and surprises

me every week that it

manages to work, to be honest.

I’m just enjoying the journey.”

The name For Goodness Cake

came from the phrase ‘for goodness

sake’.

“Mum was always saying ‘for

goodness sake’,” she said.

Growing up, Holmes was

always in the kitchen.

Not formally trained as a

chef, Holmes has worked in

various cooking jobs in Selwyn,

including the Dunsandel Store,

Armadillos in Leeston, and

has run the Ellesmere College

Canteen for four years and

owned Southbridge Takeaways.

For Goodness Cake is open on

Fridays and Saturdays, with the

rest of the week spent experimenting

with new desserts or

filling orders.

The most popular desserts are

a Mars Bar cheesecake and a

raspberry cheesecake.

But Holmes’ favourite is Mississippi

mud cake.

Carrick to

take on

patron role

Springs Ward councillor Denise

Carrick has been made patron of

Lincoln Community Care.

The association had been

without a patron since 2024,

following the death of former

mayor Michael McEvedy.

Carrick was nominated for the

role by chair Lester Ballantine

and formally accepted the position

at the organisation’s annual

meeting last week.

She said she was honoured to

take on the role.

“I was quite overwhelmed and

very flattered, as that is big shoes

to follow, and it is an amazing

and thriving organisation.

“My children attended the Kip

McGrath tutoring at the centre

and my parents have benefited

from the Meals on Wheels service

during periods of illness.

“All of the services they offer

are in high demand and so valuable

to help older residents, and

residents new to the area, to

have connection and be able to

stay in their homes and their

community,” Carrick said.

At the meeting, Jenni and

Edgar Baxter were recognised

for 17 years of volunteering,

while Shona Bycroft, Rosemary

and John Hewson were acknowledged

for 10 years of service.

Other volunteers also received

certificates for their contributions

across a range of community

groups.

Amalgamation push soundly rejected

The bullying approach from the

Government is outrageously wrong.

Selwyn enjoys a very excellent council

and first class stewardship.

The possibility of amalgamation with

Christchurch is wrong for Selwyn – the

city and Banks Peninsula are so totally

different that such a union would be

akin to matching Suzuki Swifts to rail

for freight purposes.

Our local MP for Selwyn is

distressingly quiet on this overreach

from Government. She ought to be

aggressive on our behalf.

Feeding kea

The call by the Kea Conservation

Trust (Selwyn Times June 24) to ban

the feeding of kea in the Arthur’s Pass

village is unnecessary and unhelpful.

Kea are scavengers by nature and will

feed on whatever attracts them. Hordes

of them used to gather and feed at the

nearby Halpins Creek rubbish pit until

it closed and they were known to attack

sheep

Sadly their diet now includes, from

time to time, 1080 pellets and the

carcasses of creatures poisoned by 1080

and this has led to the decimation of

their numbers.

The local who was feeding them

fresh fruit and vegetables, a few doors

down, had my support as it made them

less likely to venture into the poisoned

areas

Kea, like most creatures in nature,

adapt and evolve and it is ludicrous to

try and force them to survive on a prehuman

settlement food source that is

likely to be impacted by climate change

and contaminated by ongoing poison

operations.

Finding her place in farming’s future

Proud to be Me is a series

Selwyn District. This week,

Coen Lammers speaks to

Kate McCormick, Ellesmere

Sustainable Agriculture’s

youngest committee member,

about farming and family

For Kate McCormick, joining the

committee of Ellesmere Sustainable

Agriculture Inc (ESAI)

two years ago was about community,

learning, and giving

something back to the district

her family has long been part

of.

McCormick, 34, grew up in

Templeton and now lives in

Leeston, but said her connection

to Ellesmere runs through

both family and place.

“My grandparents were from

the Southbridge area and had a

wee block of land at Lakeside,

and I always enjoyed going out

there to see them.”

That family tie, along with a

desire to be part of a smaller

rural community, eventually

drew her to Leeston.

“It was wanting to be part of

a smaller community compared

with living in town, and just a

bit of a family connection,” she

said.

Her path into agriculture was

not a straight one. McCormick

began her career as a primary

school teacher before shifting

direction at the end of 2020 and

retraining in agronomy.

“Covid sort of kicked me to do

that,” she said.

“I could do a paper online while

I was still teaching and eventually

completed a postgraduate

diploma in Agricultural Science

through Lincoln University.”

Agriculture had, however, long

been part of her background.

McCormick spent nine summers

as a pea sampler for Watties,

walking crops and collecting

plant samples used to determine

harvest timing.

“The more I did that, the more

I wanted to make the move into

the agriculture industry,” McCormick

said.

She joined Watties full-time, following

the footsteps of her father,

uncle and grandfather.

The announcement that Watties

Foods planned to close its

Christchurch plant came as a

shock to more than 200 growers

across Canterbury and had a

direct impact on McCormick.

While the plant closure was

an unexpected setback, it also

opened the door to a new

opportunity.

McCormick recently joined

PGG Wrightson Seeds as an

arable representative, a role she

describes as a “really good opportunity

to learn about a wider

range of crops”.

That same practical, forwardlooking

attitude is what she now

brings to ESAI, the farmer-led

catchment group that has spent

two decades advocating for productive

and environmentally

responsible farming in the Ellesmere

district.

McCormick joined the committee

in August 2024 after becoming

involved through her family’s

small Lakeside block.

“I was interested in farming,

and it was a bit of a way to give

back,” she said.

“I knew they were a really

knowledgeable group of people

who had obviously been doing a

lot of work over the last 20 years,

so I knew I was going to learn a

lot from them.”

ESAI’s achievements in recent

years have been substantial.

Through its Project Tinaku,

launched in 2020 and supported

by the Ministry for Primary

Industries, the group has completed

60 restoration projects

across Ellesmere.

The work included planting

about 50,000 native plants along

14km of waterways, restoring

11ha of sites plus a further 2ha

of wetland planting, and also

supporting extensive water monitoring

across multiple sites.

“That monitoring is vital to see

the impact our work is having on

the water quality,” McCormick

said.

In recent years, ESAI has run 22

workshops and events attended

by nearly 600 people, and its

current focus is on supporting

farmers with integrated farm

planning.

What has struck McCormick

most is the dedication of the

committee and staff, and their

willingness to support members

through a time of rapid change in

farming.

“There’s a real focus on the

future. It’s about ensuring farming

in the area remains viable for

future generations, and looking

after the land and water.”

That dual focus – economic

and environmental – is central to

ESAI’s work.

McCormick said the group

gives farmers a united voice on

issues ranging from consents to

major policy reform.

“It’s about having a strong

united front and a voice working

together to tackle any issues that

are coming, “and to support each

other in their day-to-day farming

operations”.

Lincoln slip,

Rolleston

still winless

Milestones on and off the

field for Waihora stalwart

Lincoln Combined and Rolleston

College have suffered setbacks in

their Miles Toyota Championship

campaigns, with four rounds

remaining before the playoffs.

Lincoln slipped from third

to fifth after a 34-22 defeat to

Christchurch Boys’ High School’s

second XV, while Rolleston were

outclassed 32-7 by St Thomas’ of

Canterbury’s second XV.

Rolleston sit tenth, and are one

of only two winless teams alongside

Horomaka Combined.

Both sides return home this

weekend, with Rolleston hosting

Nelson’s Waimea College and Lincoln

facing St Thomas at Darfield

High.

Rolleston’s match kicks off at

11am on Saturday, with Lincoln’s

game following at 1pm.

Both teams will have a twoweek

break for the school

holidays before the competition

resumes on July 25. Rolleston

host Horomaka Combined, while

Lincoln travel to face Rangiora

High School.

On Friday last week, Ryan Koning

was in hospital for the birth of

his first child, Macie.

The following day, he was in

the thick of the action for his

150th division 1 appearance for

Waihora, scoring a first-half hattrick

in a 33-28 Coleman Shield

win over Southbridge.

“She was a big couple days,”

Koning said.

Macie was born a month

premature and is still in NICU.

Koning said she was doing well.

“They (hospital staff) are amazing,

she’s in good hands.”

The No 8 still turned out for

Waihora on Saturday, after getting

‘the okay’ from partner

Caitlin, playing his 150th match –

12 years after his debut.

Koning marked the occasion

with three tries in the opening 40

minutes before being replaced

during the second half.

“I was more surprised than

anyone. I don’t know how that

happened. I scored three tries for

about one metre made, two were

pushover scrums and then one

was just from a pick-and-go.”

Try-scoring is a rarity for Koning.

He believes his previous try

came “about three years ago”,

around the time of his 100th

game, when he scored twice.

“It’s been a fairly dry spell.

I just thought I’d be a glory

boy. The div 2 boys were away

playing at Springston, and they

were asking for score updates.

They heard I’d scored the first

three tries of the game, and

they said, ‘that must be an

absolute joke’.”

The win saw Waihora gain

ground on Southbridge in the

Coleman Shield standings,

cutting the leaders’ advantage

from five points to two.

Saturday’s other matches

saw Darfield beat West Melton

56-10, while Prebbleton

defeated Lincoln 48-29.

Darfield and Prebbleton are

third and fourth respectively,

with the top four qualifying for

the semi-finals.

Waihora travel to Lincoln on

Saturday in a shortened round,

with just two matches scheduled.

West Melton host Prebbleton

in the other fixture, with both

games kicking off at 2.45pm.

Southbridge’s clash with Darfield

was played over Easter

weekend as part of the club’s

150 th jubilee celebrations.

Baxter embracing rapid rise to Super Rugby

Lincoln’s Poppy Baxter is among

the youngest contracted rugby

players in the country this year,

but the 18-year-old fullback is

trying to keep a level head as her

career accelerates.

Baxter made her Super Rugby

Aupiki debut for Matatū three

weeks ago in a win over Chiefs

Manawa and has since featured

in a loss against Hurricanes Poua

and a victory over the Blues.

Matatū play Chiefs Manawa

in Hamilton at 12.20pm on

Saturday.

Having turned 18 in March,

Baxter is the youngest player to

wear the Matatū jersey since the

competition began in 2022.

“It’s been pretty quick,” she

said of her rise through the

ranks.

“I originally wasn’t in the team.

I was on one of the intern (parttime)

contracts and Whitney

(former coach Whitney Hansen)

called me a couple of weeks later

saying that I’d be on a full one,

which was pretty exciting.”

That call came in December,

before a summer of change for

Matatū.

Hansen has since become

Black Ferns head coach, while

Baxter’s father, Blair, has

returned to lead Matatū after

coaching the side to its only title

in 2023.

Despite living with her coach,

Baxter said separating rugby and

family life has not been an issue.

“It’s pretty cool. I think we

definitely have that switch-off

time when we’re at home. No

rugby chat, nothing like that, just

straight back to being my dad,”

she said.

“And then when we’re here, it’s

just rugby. He's just like another

coach. But it’s pretty cool to be

able to do what I love with him

as well.”

The family live close to

Matatū’s base at Lincoln University,

so Baxter doesn’t need to

travel to training with her dad.

“He’s normally in way earlier

than me anyway.”

Baxter played for the Lincoln

club until under 12 level before

moving to Christchurch Girls’

High School where she played

her rugby.

She said the support from her

former club has continued as she

has progressed through the game.

“They always reach out. I think

they’re quite proud. On the wall

at the club, they’ve got all the All

Blacks and Canterbury players,

and I’ve made my way on there.”

Less than a year ago, Baxter

was helping Christchurch

Girls’ High to a 29-15 win over

Auckland’s Howick College in

the third-place playoff at the

national Top 4 competition.

“I’ve got quite a few

friends still in high school

and they’re playing

Wednesday rugby, and

I’m playing on a Saturday

in Super Rugby.”

Farah Palmer Cup debut for

Canterbury at 17 and came off

the bench in last season’s final,

where Canterbury went down

19-13 to Waikato.

“I’ve got quite a few friends

still in high school and they’re

playing Wednesday rugby, and

I’m playing on a Saturday in

Super Rugby,” she said.

“It’s pretty crazy when you

think about it like that.”

match at One New Zealand

Stadium, played in front of a

record crowd of more than

11,700 as the home side beat

Chiefs Manawa 52-26.

“The first game was pretty

unreal to be able to debut at the

new stadium.”

“And debuting with so many

other girls was pretty cool.

“Then the first travelling

game against the Hurricanes,

that was also cool to see how it

is when we go away. It wasn’t a

great game, but we still got the

result.”

Burnham player set for Glasgow games

The Selwyn Sports Centre on

a Thursday night is a world

away from the glamour of the

Commonwealth Games.

But it is a jump netballer Leila

Tu’inukuafe is about to take.

Tu’inukuafe, 19, who plays

attack for Burnham in the senior

A competition, has been called

into the Tonga squad for her

senior international debut at the

games, which start in Glasgow on

July 25.

“It definitely is (a special

feeling) to debut for my country. I

definitely didn’t expect it, because

I wasn’t confident when I trialled

and I’m in a new position, here

for club I play goal attack but

I play mid-court for them, so I

didn’t think I’d get the call to be in

the team, it was a pretty surreal

feeling.”

Tu’inukuafe was born in New

Zealand but is eligible for Tonga

through her father Graeme, and

represented their under 21s at

last year’s World Youth Cup.

Tonga’s first match is against

world No 1 Australia, with

Tu’inukuafe set to go head to

head with some of her favourite

players, like defender Courtney

Bruce and mid-courter Jamie-Lee

Price.

“Australia first game is pretty

daunting, but best to get it over

and done with, I guess,” she said.

“I still can’t comprehend, like,

we’re playing against them, which

is pretty cool. Even if it’s definitely

going to be a hard game, I grew

up watching them, and now I’m

playing against them.”

Burnham’s Leila Tu’inukuafe could come up against the likes of Australians Courtney Bruce and Jamie-Lee Price on

international debut at the Commonwealth Games.

competition on Thursday nights,

and Kereru in the Christchurch

competition on a Monday.

Those commitments on top of

studying psychology full-time

at Canterbury University makes

life busy.

“It’s a bit full on, but I just

love netball. My goal was to

make the Tonga team, so I just

thought, ‘the more game time,

the better I can get’, so I just

made it work.

“I’ve had to be organised, but

clearly it worked out.”

She departs for Sydney on

July 12 to link up with the team,

before travelling to Glasgow

ahead of the start of the

tournament.

After the games’ opener

against Australia, Tonga then

meets South Africa and Northern

Ireland in each of the next

two days, before having a day

off and finishing pool play

against world No 4 England and

Malawi.

A top-two finish will see them

progress to the semi-finals.

Otherwise they will play a team

from the other pool – which

includes New Zealand – to

determine their finish order.

Selwyn United’s survival hopes

took a hit on Saturday after a

5-0 loss to Coastal Spirit, while

regional league relegation rivals

Wānaka picked up a crucial point.

The Stallions looked set to drop

to the bottom of the table, but

Wānaka conceded a last-minute

equaliser in their draw with

Northern, leaving the two sides

level on points.

Selwyn remain ninth on goal

difference alone, with their -26

goal difference keeping them

above Wānaka’s -29.

The league pauses this weekend

for Chatham Cup action before

Selwyn travel to Dunedin City

Royals the following week, while

Wānaka face league leaders

Financial challenges force early end to US campaign

Jacob Douglas won his first USF 2000 Pro in May at Indianapolis.

Funding difficulties have forced

Lincoln racing driver Jacob

Douglas to end his United States

campaign early.

The 21-year-old had been

competing in the USF2000 Pro

Championship with leading

team Pabst Racing as he pursued

his goal of reaching IndyCar.

Like most up-and-coming

young drivers, Douglas was

responsible for securing the

funding for both his race seat

and the costs of living in the

United States.

A contract just to race costs

about US$900,000 before any

other expenses such as travel,

training, living costs, and any

car damage in races.

Late call-up, big impact

Glen Foulkes couldn’t sleep

in the early hours of Saturday

morning. So he got up and

turned on the TV to watch the

Black Caps battle with England

in the third and deciding cricket

test.

It turned out to be a good

thing. Because Foulkes was not

expecting his son Zak to be part

of the match.

Zak was in the squad but had

not been named in the playing

XI for the third

test against in Nottingham.

He had

also not played

either of the first

two matches.

Then fast

bowler Blair

Tickner was

concussed while

batting and had to Glen Foulkes

be replaced.

“When I heard that Tickner

was off the field, I thought there

was a chance (he would play),”

said Glen.

“Once it was confirmed after

the drinks break, it was like,

here's an opportunity. There

was excitement, I woke his

mother (Amanda) up as it was

confirmed. We would have

loved to have been over there.”

After being parachuted in

late on day two, Zak went on to

take six wickets, three in each

innings, and dismissed retiring

England captain Ben Stokes

twice in his final test.

Super sub Zak Foulkes took six wickets as a concussion replacement to help the

Black Caps to a 160-run win.

He finished with match figures

of 6 for 87 as the Black Caps

secured a 160-run victory and

2-1 series win.

“It’s incredible,” said Glen.

“I said to Amanda, the fact

that he’s been thrown into this

situation, and he’s made a big

contribution to the win, it’s a

credit to his mental state, it’s

really impressive.”

Glen watched through the

night on days three, four and

five, play starting at 10pm NZT

and running through to almost

6am .

Zak was a part of one of

the most exciting passages

of the match on the fourth

afternoon, batting at the time

Stokes’ looming retirement was

announced to the Trent Bridge

crowd.

Stokes came in to bowl the

next over, and had had Zak

caught at second slip with his

first ball to great cheers.

Glen had mixed emotions

about the moment.

“It’s a funny feeling that

because, I sort of looked at it

like, ‘oh, bugger, he’s out’, but

I also looked at it and went,

‘hey, you’ve just been part of

something pretty special’.

“That’s pretty cool, in a way.”

Assuming he can shrug off

a hamstring injury sustained

in the win, Zak is set to next

play in the Black Caps’ one-day

international series in the West

Indies starting July 12.

“Motorsport is never straightforward,

and unfortunately, the

financial challenges of racing

overseas have caught up with

us this season. That’s simply the

reality of the sport,” he said.

“It’s obviously disappointing

not to be able to finish the season,

but I’m incredibly proud of

what we’ve achieved.”

Douglas ended his campaign

in May sitting seventh in the

championship after claiming

his maiden USF2000 victory at

the Indianapolis Grand Prix

Circuit.

“We’ve shown we have the

pace to compete at the front

and we belong at this level.

Winning at Indianapolis was a

special moment and something

nobody can take away from us.”

Douglas said there was “no set

plan” for next year.

“The focus now shifts

to evaluating our options

and continuing to build the

relationships that will help shape

the next stage of my career.

“I’d also like to thank Augie

Pabst and the entire Pabst Racing

organisation for the faith they’ve

shown in me.

“The team has become like a

second family during my time

in America, and I’m incredibly

grateful for everything they’ve

done to help me grow both on

and off the track. We’ve shared

some special moments together.”

Surman shines amid

World Cup heartbreak

New Zealand’s World Cup

dream may be over after a

5-1 defeat to Belgium in their

final group match on Saturday,

but Prebbleton’s Finn Surman

is among the few All Whites

to have emerged from the

tournament with an enhanced

reputation.

The defender, who grew

up in the district and played

for Selwyn United until he

was 15, started all three of

the All Whites’ group games

and opened the scoring with

a thumping header in the 3-1

defeat to Egypt.

The goal made him just the

sixth New Zealander to score at

a FIFA World Cup.

After the group stage, Surman

also led the tournament for

blocked shots, with nine.

The 22-year-old plies his trade

for American side Portland

Timbers in the MLS, after

joining from the Wellington

Phoenix in 2024.

His performances at the

tournament could attract

interest from European clubs,

with the transfer window open

until September 1.

All Whites coach Darren

Bazeley singled out Surman

alongside Elijah Just, who

scored three goals, and

midfielder Marko Stamenić as

players who had boosted their

standing.

“I’m sure some players have

come out of this tournament

really well: Eli, Stamenić,

Surman, they’re going to get

moves to top leagues, and

that’ll help make us a better

team, because they’ll be

regularly playing against better

opposition,” he said.

Surman will return to

Portland when the MLS season

resumes on July 17.

of orange

Find your comfort zone with a moist

orange bundt cake, says Nigel Slater

ORANGE AND ALMOND

BUNDT CAKES

You will need six individual tins, but,

if you prefer, use deep paper cake cases.

Ingredients

Makes 6

200g, plus a little for the tins, butter

200g caster sugar

1 lemon

1 small orange

100g skinned almonds

100g, plus some for the tins, self-raising

flour

3 eggs

For the icing

85g icing sugar

2 Tbsp lemon juice

2 tsp poppy seeds

Method

• Set the oven at 180degC. Prepare the

cake tins by melting a little extra butter,

brushing it over the inside of the tins,

then dusting them lightly with flour.

Turn the tins upside down and shake

lightly to remove any excess flour.

• Cream the butter and sugar together

in a food mixer until pale and fluffy.

Finely grate and add the orange and

lemon zest. Grind the almonds to a

coarse powder in a food processor then

stir in the flour. Break the eggs into a

small bowl and beat thoroughly with a

fork.

• When the butter and sugar are well

creamed, add the flour-almond mixture

and the beaten eggs, alternately and a

little at a time, beating continuously.

Mix lightly but thoroughly then spoon

into the cake tins, smoothing the surface

as you go.

• Bake for 20-25 minutes until the

cakes have risen. Test with a skewer.

Remove from the oven and leave to

settle for 5 minutes. Turn out on to a

cooling rack.

• For the icing, sieve the icing sugar

into a small bowl, squeeze in the lemon

juice and mix to a smooth icing about

the consistency of cream. It should fall

from the spoon quite slowly – too thin

and it will slip off the cakes.

• Trickle the icing over the cakes,

sprinkle the poppy seeds on top and

leave in a cool place to set

Announcing the first NZ Truffle Day!

This Saturday, the 4th of July, will be

our first NZ Truffle Day!

This has been declared by the New

Zealand Truffle Association, which

says: “We see this as part of a broader

premium New Zealand food story. By

working together, we can build a brand

that reflects the quality of what’s being

grown here and carries real weight

internationally.” The intention is to

hold NZ Truffle Day annually on the

first Saturday of July, as this date is

right in the heart of the season.

The Association is the national body

representing the interests of truffle

growers, producers, truffle dog teams,

researchers and industry partners. It

supports truffières (orchards) of all

scales, from boutique to largescale

commercial. It was established in

1990 – which, to be fair, explains their

continued determination to refer

to themselves as NZTA, despite the

subsequent establishment of that other

agency!

NZTA has played an important role in

establishing quality standards to help

this specialist food production industry

mature here. In the early days, setting

out to grow truffles was far from

an exact science. Taxonomies were

sometimes wrong and you couldn’t

be guaranteed to get the tree/truffle

inoculation you set out to purchase –

with devastating results, as this only

becomes apparent after about seven

years. Now, national guidelines and

product certification reduce this risk.

Through newsletters, research,

conferences and direct engagement

with growers, NZTA ensures that

reliable, practical and relevant

information is easily accessible. The

website is a great starting point for

clear, direct guidance, including this

important reality check on the “Where

to begin” page: “Truffles are a longterm

investment, and early decisions

will shape success (or frustration) for

decades.”

NZTA also makes an important

point that may be of much interest to

Selwyn rural landowners: “The sector

offers diversification for landowners,

alongside additional revenue streams

such as agri tourism and direct-toconsumer

sales.” Locals seeking

plants and/or advice are well served

Gourmet truffles grown locally

Think truffles, and you’ll likely think

pigs snuffling round ancient Italian or

French forests. But for me now, I will

always associate truffles with Winter

Solstice – the misty drizzly day when

the good folk of Borchii Park Truffière,

West Melton, introduced me to the

smells, tastes and experience of truffle

hunting, in a very real New Zealand

landscape and with a very friendly,

ordinary, family dog.

Jeff Weston and partner Jenny bought

their 7-hectare property in 2000,

planted their first truffle-inoculated

seedlings in 2002, and in 2008 made

the first commercial harvest of Tuber

borchii – Bianchetto truffles – in the

southern hemisphere. Jeff explains:

“The fungus takes years to grow on

the trees’ root systems. The trees’

photosynthesis helps the fungus to

fruit, and the fungus in turn brings in

water and nutrients for its hosts. It’s a

complex relationship, which is not fully

understood.”

The harvest period at Borchii Park is

10 weeks, beginning on Winter Solstice.

The rest of the year is spent in truffière

management – scarifying to aerate

the soil and pruning the tree canopy.

No sprays or fertilisers are used, to

avoid disrupting the delicate symbiotic

relationship between tree and fungus.

Even though truffles are a premium

product, it’s a challenging business to

be in. As Jenny says, “you can’t predict

the season, and you just don’t know

where the truffles are until you start

digging”. There’s no technology or large

scale harvesting equipment that can

help – you’re foraging on your own

land, carrying out wild harvest.

And the dog? Well, Jeff says any

breed can be trained. He trained Pico

by getting to find her favourite toy.

He admits she’s not the most exact or

accurate, saying with wry affection,

“she’s a bit of a muppet – she’s excited

to sniff out the truffles, bounces up and

down, and sometime even eats them”.

But in the hard, hands-and-knees work

of locating then digging out these gems,

the two of them are a true team.

Bianchetto truffles sell for the same

price as their perhaps more famous

cousins, the Black Truffle or Périgord,

but are prized by chefs for different

reasons. They are shaved fresh onto

food, as cooking destroys the unique

intense aroma, which is made up of 50

volatile compounds. The flavour also

infuses well into eggs, butter and oil.

It’s all about rotation, rotation, rotation

Expert advice on what to do for

your garden this week

VEGETABLES

Crop rotation may sound overly

scientific for the ordinary

gardener, but it is an important

way of getting the most from

the vegetable garden and, at the

same time, minimise the risk

of diseases, such as clubroot in

cabbages or basal rot (caused by

Fusarium oxysporum) in onions,

garlic and leeks.

Designed so crops take different

minerals from the soil each year,

good rotation will take account of

chemical and physical differences

between plants.

The basic rule is never to grow

plants from the same family or

type in the same spot two years in

a row.

Leaving aside perennial vegetables,

such as rhubarb, globe

artichokes and asparagus, that

stay in the same plot, divide your

garden into three areas.

Make a list of what crops can be

grouped: Potatoes, celery, leeks,

carrots, parsnips and beetroot in

one group; peas, beans (all types),

onions and spinach in the second;

and brassicas including brussels

sprouts, cabbages, broccoli, cauliflowers

and kohl rabi in the third.

Grow them by groups this coming

season.

The basic rule of crop rotation is never to grow plants from the same family or type in the same spot two years in a row.

In the second season, grow

tap-rooted plants (group one)

in plot three, the ground previously

used for brassicas.

Put potatoes and the onion

family into area one and brassicas

in the remaining part of the

garden.

Year three sees brassicas in

plot one, tap-rooted plants in

bed two and onions, as well as

potatoes in the third section.

Continue this practice in subsequent

years.

A garden diary may make

it easier to remember the

movements or draw a computer-generated

plan and mark

what was sown or planted

where, with planting or sowing

dates.

If the weather is reasonably

dry, dig any vacant ground

roughly, but do not try to cultivate

the ground too finely at

this time of the year or it can set

like concrete as it dries.

If you prefer not to spray,

attracting waxeyes to the

garden by putting a shallow

container of sugar water or

spoiled fruit on or near fruit

trees will encourage them to

clean up bugs.

Good garden hygiene is also

important in preventing or controlling

disease.

Any fruit remaining on trees

or on the ground through the

winter may be a source of primary

infection and should be

removed.

spray. Thoroughly cover all

parts of the tree.

Motoring with Bob Nettleton

Isuzu had high hopes its latest D-Max

would take the sales fight to its rivals, but

those ambitions have not been realised

five years after its New Zealand debut. Its

twin, the Mazda BT-50, exited our market

several months ago.

Both models remain on sale in Australia,

where the rugged D-Max enjoys a

strong following. Sales of almost 27,000

units last year made it Australia’s third

best-selling ute in 2025.

By contrast, the BT-50 sold well under

half that number. D-Max owners, both

here and in Australia, tend to be loyal to

the brand and firmly believe in its builttough

mantra.

It certainly is tough, but the D-Max has

slipped behind many rivals in refinement

and power, while also carrying a higher

price tag than several of the models it

competes against.

The current-generation D-Max bristled

with premium features and advanced

technology when it first arrived, giving it

some early sales momentum.

Achieving a maximum five-star ANCAP

safety rating under the then-new and

more stringent 2020 testing regime gave

the D-Max valuable bragging rights in the

safety space.

However, the competition, particularly

larger brands with deeper pockets and

greater resources, soon applied pressure

to a smaller player like Isuzu and

reasserted their dominance in the ute

market.

Towards the end of 2025, Isuzu Utes

announced what it described as a significant

update to the D-Max, but it felt

a little too little, too late. The headline

addition was stop-start technology across

the range. While welcome, it was not

a bold enough upgrade to significantly

move the sales dial.

The system automatically shuts down

the engine when the vehicle comes to a

complete stop, such as at traffic lights,

and restarts it instantly when the driver

moves away.

This reduces fuel consumption at idle

and lowers CO2 emissions. With diesel

prices hovering near record levels, the

system can reduce fuel use by up to 10%,

providing some welcome relief at the

pump.

The six-model D-Max range opens with

a workhorse single-cab chassis automatic

priced at $48,990, a figure that would buy

some four-wheel-drive double cabs from

rival brands, making the D-Max seem

expensive.

The LS 4WD double cab we reviewed

retails for $63,990, again placing it comfortably

above several newer and more

powerful competitors. You also pay a

hefty $10,000 premium over its LS 2WD

sibling.

Power comes from Isuzu’s familiar

3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine, producing

140kW and 450Nm.

Those were respectable figures five

years ago, but they are now comfortably

eclipsed by a growing number of competitors

producing 150kW or more and

around 500Nm of torque.

The Isuzu-designed and built engine

may not be the most powerful in its

class, but in everyday driving it is strong,

responsive and impressively refined.

It earns high marks for its smoothness

and strong throttle response. It is particularly

effortless over long distances,

covering kilometres with car-like ease.

The six-speed automatic transmission

is equally composed, delivering smooth

and timely gear changes.

A spacious cabin with generous legroom

and headroom front and rear is

another plus, along with comfortable

and supportive seats. The LS is well

equipped with a nine-inch infotainment

display featuring DAB+ radio, satellite

navigation, Android Auto, wireless Apple

CarPlay and dual-zone climate control.

The D-Max was the first Isuzu ute fitted

with both a driver’s knee airbag and a

far-side airbag, bringing the total to eight

airbags. Anti-whiplash front seats help

reduce the severity of neck injuries in

rear-end collisions.

The ride and handling strike an agreeable

balance between comfort and

road holding without compromising

the strong, durable suspension that has

become an Isuzu hallmark.

It relishes rough terrain, where

its capabilities become particularly

apparent.

The D-Max is ready and, more

importantly, able to tackle demanding

towing duties, whether hauling materials

to muddy building sites or transporting

plant and equipment to remote forestry

blocks.

The test ute was easy to guide through

tight corners and did so with surprising

balance and composure.

It would be even better with steering

that offered more weight and road feel.

That is an easy enough fix, although it

may have to wait until Isuzu decides to

roll out its next major update.

Overall, the D-Max is a good, honest

and hard-working ute that rolls up its

sleeves and gets stuck into whatever task

is asked of it. That remains one of its

most appealing qualities.

Choosing a kitchen design

To some extent, kitchens design themselves

with colours and features enhancing the basic

layout.

Positioning of sinks, cooktops and range hoods

is best determined at the time the house is

designed. When renovating a kitchen, there may

be the option to work with the existing drainage

and wiring or to make changes, which will likely

add to the cost.

Repositioning or adding a new room for a larger

or lighter kitchen, or building in a pantry might

also be an option.

The kitchen is a place of activity so needs to be

functional and serviceable, to allow for family

routine or the needs of a keen cook. It may be the

heart of the home as a gathering point, blending

into the living area. Less popular today, are kitchens

tucked away as a separate room.

A pantry in the form of a scullery may be incorporated

for food preparation and dishwashing,

with the kitchen less of a workroom and more

part of the living and entertaining space.

Effective lighting is essential in any kitchen and

pantry. If there are windows, there will be natural

light during the daytime. LED lighting is best and

now the most common option for night time use

and for internal kitchens. Consider placement of

lights whether downlights or those hanging over

an island to avoid shadowing.

Sufficient bench space for food preparation

is relative to the degree of cooking likely to be

undertaken. You may want an island large enough

for the family to sit around or so the kitchen

becomes more a gathering place than preparation/food

area. Areas to sit and work might also

be incorporated. Power points might be fitted so

devices can be charged.

Where an island sink, consider the distance to

the cooktop and refrigerator so there is efficient

stone benchtops are favoured by many, as are soft

closing drawers and cupboards.

available. Determine your needs then if budget

Constructing your outdoor

living space

Decking and paved areas increase

outdoor living space, providing cooler

places to relax on hot balmy summer

evenings. They add interest to a home

and provide a lead out to the lawn and

garden. Such structural elements break

up a large garden offering ways to

reduce grassed areas.

If choosing stone chip for barbecue or

seating areas, ensure the ground is level

and weed free. Weed mat under the

stones helps minimise weeds though the

stones can spill onto the lawn, blunting

lawnmower blades.

Paving slabs or bricks can be fitted

into stoned paths, patios or courtyards.

Pavers are more permanent. They come

in a variety of colours and sizes and can

easily be lifted when making changes to

your garden layout.

Good ground preparation pays off.

Sketch or mark the area to be paved

using string. Check there is no underground

wiring or drainage close to the

surface and kill off all weeds.

Regulations require paved areas be

a minimum of one metre below the

internal finished floor level. The correct

height is dependent on the type of flooring

and cladding of a home. You will

also want to fit the pavers higher than

the surrounding area and allow a 10-30

millimetre run-off. Heavier use areas

need a thicker base with more soil dug

out.

Hammer in a stake then tie string

around to mark the lowest and highest

points and guide the laying of the

pavers. Spread crushed stone over the

prepared ground to create a hard base,

then a 2-5 centimetre layer of sand to

assist drainage and prevent the pavers

sagging over time (especially where the

ground is soft).

Place the pavers straight down, minimising

walking on the sand base. Cut

pavers with a stone cutter and compress

with a plate compactor. Plastic,

aluminium, steel or concrete edge

restraints may be fitted to help retain

the shape of the paved area. Lastly

sweep crusher dust over the joints to

ensure the pavers sit evenly and water

pooling is avoided.

More permanent and durable options

are concrete and asphalt though can be

stark and glary for outdoor areas. This

is overcome by choosing coloured concrete

or a different finish like exposed

aggregate.

For an earthy look, decking is ideal

– constructed from pine, hardwood

or bamboo. Treated pine is affordable

and reasonably durable. Bamboo

is strong. Hardwood is durable, attractive

and fashionable. The choice of

wood depends as much on preference

as budget. Where a deck will be 1.5

metres or higher, Council consent will

be required. Timber piles should be

concreted in so there is a firm base for

the bearers over which the joists will

sit. These run at 90 degrees to the bearers.

Galvanised or stainless steel nails

or screws can be used to fix the decking

timber. Screws will provide a more

secure fixing.

Finish off your alfresco living with

built-in seating, raised garden beds, pots

and some attractive outdoor furniture.

Effectively siting your new home

The way a house is sited on a section

influences the amount of sun entering the

home and whether there is a warm, outdoor

living area.

For maximum free energy from the

sun (especially in winter) and sunny outdoor

living spaces, the house should be

north/north-west orientated. Direction

of prevailing winds is also valid, especially

when determining distances from

boundary fences. An area not so pleasant

in winter might be a refuge from the hot

north-west winds in summer. Future use

of the outdoor space for entertaining or

al fresco dining might also mean choosing

a spot close to the kitchen. Clever design

can achieve a sheltered sunny living area.

If having an outlook from each room

is important, siting back from boundary

fences will allow a garden to provide a

green outlook. If the section offers a view

over a park or reserve, outdoor living

spaces might capitalise on this, with a

pleasurable setting created while adding

capital value to the home.

Council land zoning determines the percentage

of a section allowed to be built on,

and the distance a building must be from

each boundary. This is determined by the

recession plane; determined by the house

roof height and how this impacts on the

sun received in a neighbouring property.

Garages generally can be built closer to a

fence and the front of the section.

Ideally, the garage will be sited on

the south/south-east side of the house,

depending on the section’s orientation.

elements, driveway accessibility,

front of section landscaping, and caravan/

motorhome parking. The latter is

usually not permitted to be on view from

the street, leading to the need to allocate

parking for such, behind an internal

fence.

When choosing a section, as well as

determining the size of home to be built

on it, consider the amount of outdoor living

space you want as well as what you

need space for on your land. Work with

your designer and builder. Walk round

your section with them, and discuss how

the house design you want could best be

positioned.
