REFRIGERATION MATTERS
Starfrost launches next-gen
Hybrid Tunnel Freezer:
The future of IQF Freezing
S
tarfrost is pleased to announce the launch
of its new Hybrid Tunnel Freezer – a nextgeneration
solution for Individual Quick
Freezing (IQF). This updated model integrates
advancements in design, performance and hygiene,
all while maintaining exceptional energy efficiency.
Compact design, greater capacity
The Hybrid Tunnel Freezer features a newly
developed, more compact design that delivers
up to 60% more production capacity than its
predecessor. Despite its reduced size, the system
retains full flexibility and can freeze or chill a
wide range of food products, including small and
delicate items such as raw minced meat, seafood
and cooked proteins. The compact build allows
food processors to maximise valuable factory
floor space without compromising output.
Performance meets efficiency
This redesigned model not only boosts
production throughput but also improves overall
system performance without increasing energy
consumption. The enhanced capacity is achieved
through the addition of two extra conveyor belts,
enabling high-volume freezing using the same
energy consumption and footprint as the previous
model. This makes the Hybrid Tunnel Freezer an
ideal solution for processors seeking efficiency,
scalability and low operating costs.
Hygienic design
The Hybrid Tunnel Freezer is built around a
‘clean-by-design’ engineering approach. This
design minimises difficult-to-clean areas and
incorporates smooth surfaces and high-grade
components, making cleaning simpler and more
effective. With a simplified design and smart
engineering, the freezer improves cleanability
and supports compliance with hygiene
standards in food processing environments.
Premium quality results
A key feature of the new freezer is its multi-belt
conveyor system, which crust-freezes products
prior to full freezing. This helps retain product
shape, structure and appearance while also
allowing smoother product transfer between
belts. The combination of gentle movement
and crust freezing promotes product agitation,
reduces clumping and ensures consistently
high-quality IQF results.
Quick setup and simple operation
Understanding the critical need to minimise
downtime, Starfrost has engineered the Hybrid
Tunnel Freezer for fast and straightforward
installation. Delivered as a pre-assembled
package, the system can be fully operational
within one week of delivery, ensuring minimal
disruption and maximum productivity.
Robert Long, Managing Director at Starfrost,
“We are committed to the ongoing innovation
of our products and services, always focused on
delivering the latest technological advancements
to our customers. As technology evolves, so do
we. Our mission is to continuously improve, and
with that, our solutions evolve to meet the highest
standards. Our new Hybrid Tunnel Freezer is
a perfect example of this evolution – offering
enhanced design and performance with key
improvements in hygiene and energy efficiency.
We are excited to launch this new model to the
market and continue providing cutting-edge IQF
solutions to our global customer base.”
The future of IQF Freezing
The Starfrost Hybrid Tunnel Freezer combines
advanced engineering, exceptional energy efficiency
and a strong focus on hygiene, making it the ideal
solution for today’s fast-paced food production
environments. Whether processing small batches
or high volumes, it delivers premium-quality frozen
products while keeping operational costs low.

United Food Brands launches Kynd Dough to
redefine convenience bakery in UK retail
new UK bakery brand, Kynd Dough, is set to
A launch into retail this June, targeting demand
for high-performing, convenience-led bakery.
Created by United Food Brands, Kynd Dough has
been developed to challenge expectations in everyday
packaged bakery by combining proper product
quality with formats designed for modern retail.
The brand is built on a simple belief: bakery should
taste good, perform consistently and fit seamlessly
into how people shop today.
Positioned as a modern challenger, Kynd Dough
combines craft-led baking with advanced packaging
and process design to help products maintain quality
and freshness over an extended shelf window, without
compromising on taste, texture or eating experience.
The initial range, rolling out from June, focuses on
core convenience-led lines including White and Brown
Sliced Loaves, Classic and Seeded Burger Buns, Brioche
Buns, Hot Dog Rolls and XL formats. A second wave
will follow in October, introducing rye options.
The phased rollout is designed to
establish high-performing core lines
before expanding into more premium
and speciality segments. The range has
been developed to support strong retailer
margins, improve on-shelf availability,
reduce waste and drive a more consistent
rate of sale within convenience and
impulse-led environments.
Kynd Dough is brought to market by
United Food Brands, the team behind
growing bakery and snacking brands
including Waffle Amour and Hallo
Deutsche Bäckerei. Supported by scalable
manufacturing and established supply
chain infrastructure, UFB has a strong
track record of launching and scaling
brands that deliver both consumer
appeal and commercial performance.
Initial retail listings are secured from launch,
with further grocery and convenience distribution
currently under discussion.
Richard Reeves, CEO, United Food Brands, said,
“Kynd Dough is about resetting expectations in
packaged bakery. We’ve focused on delivering products
that combine eating quality with real functional
benefit, supporting better availability, reducing waste
and delivering stronger, more consistent performance
on shelf, while also improving retailer margins.”
Neil Pittman, Commercial Director, added, “This is a
range built for how the category works today. Clear
core lines, strong formats and products designed to
hold their quality over time all contribute to better
availability, reduced waste and stronger margins for
convenience-led retail.”
TJ Sims, Brand Manager, said, “We set out to make
bakery that people genuinely want to eat, but that
also works harder on shelf. Kynd Dough is simple in
its thinking: good products, made properly, designed
to perform.”
Kynd Dough is now available to retailers nationwide,
with a primary focus on the convenience channel.

DAIRY MATTERS
One valve, up to 14 routes:
DMN-WESTINGHOUSE simplifies
pneumatic conveying with new M-TDV
The new M-TDV multiport tube diverter valve gives process engineers a compact
alternative to complex multi-diverter layouts, helping reduce equipment, control
complexity, footprint, maintenance, wear, and product degradation
T
he M-TDV multiport tube diverter valve is
designed for pneumatic conveying systems
that require reliable routing of powders and
pellets to multiple destinations, or the convergence of
multiple lines into 1 line. By combining up to 14 routing
positions in a single compact unit, the M-TDV offers
an efficient alternative to multiple two-way diverters
installed in series.
The number matters because it changes the system
around the valve. In a 1-to-14 configuration, one
M-TDV can replace up to 13 two-way diverters. That
means fewer valves to specify, fewer controlled units
to integrate, fewer connections to install, and fewer
service points to maintain.
Core values: Do more with less
The M-TDV enables diverting from 1 line to up to
14 destinations or converging up to 14 lines into
1 line. This gives process designers a single routing
point rather than a series of separate diverters.
That means less equipment. Fewer valves also mean fewer
actuators, controls, and connections, reducing control
and installation complexity. By integrating several routing
functions into one unit, the M-TDV also supports a
smaller system footprint and more efficient plant layouts.
The product path is equally important. In serial
diverter setups, each additional diverter introduces
more direction changes. Four diverters in series can
create up to 8 bends. The M-TDV limits the product
path to only two smooth bends through a single valve,
helping create a more controlled, gentle flow path.
For sensitive products, this is important. Fewer bends,
smoother transitions, smoother radius geometry, and
100% port alignment help protect fragile materials during
transport. Less turbulence and fewer impact points also
help reduce wear on the valve and surrounding system
components, while an optimised internal flow path
reduces resistance and supports conveying efficiency.
The result is less system complexity, less maintenance
effort over time, and less risk of unnecessary product
damage.
How the design delivers the value
At the centre of the M-TDV is an internal rotating
swan neck that guides the product smoothly along the
selected route. Exact alignment between the ports and
internal swan neck creates a direct flow path, helping
prevent disruption caused by misalignment.
The valve is also designed for real installation
conditions. Its rigid frame structure maintains
alignment when plant piping is connected to all
ports, supporting reliable switching under full piping
load. Intelligent switching means the valve takes the
shortest route to the required port, while an encoder
confirms position and an alignment cylinder ensures
exact port lock.
Maintenance access has been built into the design.
Electrical and pneumatic components are mounted
externally, making servicing easier and helping protect
electronics from product exposure. Seal replacement
can be carried out without removing factory piping,
supporting minimal downtime. Each valve also includes
a QR code linking to installation and maintenance
manuals, as well as a seal replacement animation.
For hygienic applications, the M-TDV is available with
FDA-approved white EPDM inflatable seals, stainless
steel contact parts, EC1935/2004-related compliance,
and USDA-accepted versions where required.

THE UK FOOD & DRINK SHOWS REVIEW
Inside the UK Food &
Drink Shows 2026
rom 13th-15th April 2026, the UK Food &
Drink Shows 2026 once again confirmed its
F status as one of the most important dates in the
industry calendar, bringing together the full breadth
of the food, drink, retail and manufacturing sectors
under one roof at the NEC Birmingham. At the heart
of the event was the UK Food & Drink Show itself,
acting as the central hub for innovation, ideas and
networking, while seamlessly linking five co-located
exhibitions: Farm Shop & Deli Show, Food & Drink
Expo, National Convenience Show, Forecourt Show
and Foodex Manufacturing Solutions.
What makes the UK Food & Drink Shows so distinctive
is not just its scale, but its ability to unite such a diverse
cross-section of the industry. From artisan producers and
specialist retailers through to large-scale manufacturers,
wholesalers and convenience operators, the event created
a rare space where every part of the supply chain could
meet, share ideas and explore opportunities.
The UK Food & Drink Show acted as the overarching
platform, drawing together buyers, suppliers and
decision-makers from across retail, hospitality and
foodservice. It provided a high-level view of where
the industry is heading, with strong emphasis on
innovation, sustainability, consumer trends and product
development. Across the halls, it was clear that agility
and adaptability remain central themes, as businesses
respond to shifting consumer expectations and ongoing
pressures around cost, supply and sustainability.
One of the standout co-located events was the Food
& Drink Expo, which once again showcased the
vibrancy of the UK and international food and drink
market. The show floor was packed with new product
launches, emerging brands and established names all
competing for attention from retail and foodservice
buyers. There was a strong emphasis on healthier
eating, clean-label products, plant-based innovation
and functional foods, reflecting continued changes in
consumer behaviour.
Alongside this, the Farm Shop & Deli Show offered a
more specialist focus, celebrating regional, local and
artisan producers. It provided a platform for independent
retailers and speciality food businesses to connect directly
with suppliers and discover products that help them
stand out in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
From premium deli items to innovative packaging
and equipment solutions, the show highlighted the
continued strength of the UK’s independent food sector.
The National Convenience Show brought a very
different energy, focused on the fast-moving world of
convenience retail. Here, the emphasis was firmly on
practical solutions for independent retailers and symbol
groups, with exhibitors showcasing everything from
chilled and impulse products to retail technology and
store optimisation tools. As consumer shopping habits
continue to evolve, the show reinforced the importance
of convenience stores as essential community hubs.
Equally important was the Forecourt Show, which
addressed the changing role of forecourts in the UK
retail landscape. No longer just fuel stops, forecourts
are increasingly multi-purpose destinations, combining
food-to-go, grocery essentials and services. The show
reflected this transformation, with suppliers presenting
solutions designed to increase footfall, improve
customer experience and diversify revenue streams.
Perhaps the most technically focused element of the
event was Foodex Manufacturing Solutions, which
continues to be a key meeting point for the processing,
packaging and production side of the industry.
This section of the show highlighted advancements
in automation, efficiency, sustainability and food
safety. For manufacturers under pressure to optimise
output while reducing environmental impact, Foodex
provided a valuable insight into the technologies
shaping the future of production.
Across all five shows, one of the strongest underlying
themes was sustainability. Whether it was packaging
innovation, waste reduction, energy efficiency or
responsible sourcing, exhibitors and visitors alike were
clearly focused on long-term environmental performance.
The conversations taking place on the show floor
reflected a sector that is actively trying to balance
commercial demands with environmental responsibility.
Networking remained at the heart of the event
experience. The ability to move freely between the
co-located shows meant visitors could build a complete
picture of the industry in a single visit, while also
making connections across multiple sectors. This crosssector
interaction is one of the defining strengths of the
UK Food & Drink Shows and continues to set it apart
from more narrowly focused exhibitions.
What also stood out this year was the quality of
engagement. Rather than passive browsing, there was
a clear sense of purposeful interaction, with buyers and
suppliers actively seeking partnerships and solutions. The
show has clearly matured into more than just a product
showcase; it is now a strategic business tool for many
organisations across the food and drink ecosystem.
As the 2026 edition closed its doors, the sentiment
among exhibitors and visitors was overwhelmingly
positive. Despite ongoing challenges in the wider
economic landscape, the show demonstrated resilience,
creativity and a strong appetite for innovation across
the sector, and succeeded in doing what it has always
set out to achieve: bringing the entire industry together
in one place, under one banner, to shape the future of
food and drink in the UK and beyond.
Next year’s UK Food & Drink Shows take place on
12th-14th April 2027.

British pork and encased in rich, golden pastry

portions to generously filled family-sized pies,
there’s something for every appetite. Their
newly opened seating area gives customers a
chance to explore the full range of delicious
flavours and hand-crafted pork pies in an
inviting setting. The Tasting Room menu offers
pork pies, quiche and a full sharing platter of
deli meats, cheese and scotch eggs.
As champions of local produce, the shop also
features a carefully curated range of regional
artisan goods – from craft beers and smallbatch
gins to farmhouse cheeses, handmade
chocolates, chutneys, honey, and even the
famed Melton Hunt Cake. Every item reflects
a commitment to supporting local suppliers
and celebrating the rich food culture of
Leicestershire.
Whether you’re a curious visitor, a devoted
foodie, or simply craving a taste of British
heritage, Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe is a must-visit.
Combining traditional craft, local pride, and
culinary excellence under one historic roof, it
remains a shining example of how food can tell
a story – one perfectly wrapped in golden pastry.

THE UK FOOD & DRINK SHOWS REVIEW
Meliza’s plantain pasta
eliza’s brought
Mone of the
most talked-about
innovations to the
pasta category at
the Farm Shop
& Deli Show
in Birmingham,
introducing visitors
to its pioneering
plantain pasta, a
first-of-its-kind product reimagining African heritage
ingredients for the modern British pantry.
Created by founder Moyo Ogunmiloro, Meliza’s is
more than a new pasta brand. It is part of a wider
journey to build a UK heritage food category rooted
in African ingredients, better-for-you innovation,
cultural storytelling and exceptional taste. The brand
takes plantain, a beloved staple across African and
Caribbean homes, and transforms it into a premium,
shelf-stable pasta designed for today’s healthconscious
and flavour-led consumer.
Throughout the show, Meliza’s attracted strong attention
from visitors, buyers and food lovers looking for something
genuinely different. Guests who tasted the pasta praised
its texture, flavour and cooking performance, with many
expressing surprise that plantain could be used in such a
familiar yet unexpected way. Comments such as “I can’t
believe this is made with plantain” and “The texture
is so good” captured the excitement at the stand and
reflected the growing appetite for products that bring
together nutrition, culture and innovation.
Meliza’s pasta is made with simple ingredients and no
preservatives, offering a distinctive alternative within
a category that is ready for fresh thinking. Available
in both ripe and unripe plantain varieties, the range
gives consumers two different experiences: one with
a naturally golden, subtly sweet profile, and one with
a more savoury, earthy character. Both are designed
to cook beautifully in just 6-7 minutes, making the
product as practical as it is innovative.
What makes Meliza’s stand out is not only the
product itself but also the story behind it. Born
from memory, motherhood, culture and a desire
to create more nourishing everyday food, Meliza’s
is building a bridge between heritage and modern
eating. The brand is showing that African ingredients
can sit confidently in premium retail, hospitality and
everyday home cooking, without losing their soul.
As demand grows for food that is healthier, more
meaningful and more representative of modern
Britain, Meliza’s is carving out a powerful space
of its own. With its combination of taste, purpose,
cultural relevance and category innovation, Meliza’s
is certainly a brand to watch as it continues to
expand its presence across the UK food sector.

PRINT & PACKAGING MATTERS
Inside the design & packaging
story of Bagsby & Blair
W
hen Graphic Brands and Reflex were
approached to develop the Bagsby & Blair
labels for their premium whisky range, the
ambition was clear: develop a label that captured the
premium character and refined identity of the brand.
What followed became far more than a label project.
It evolved into a showcase of technical innovation,
creativity and award-winning execution.
Material exploration at Proof+
Every exceptional label begins with the right foundation.
Working closely with the client, our collaboration
started at Proof+, where extensive material testing and
live prototyping sessions allowed the team to explore
a wide range of textured stocks and premium finishes.
After multiple rounds of hands-on evaluation and live
proofs, an elegant off-white material with a tactile
surface was selected. The subtle texture complemented
the premium positioning of the whisky while
delivering a refined, understated luxury that aligned
perfectly with the Bagsby & Blair brand vision.
Precision print production & hand finishing
Graphic Brands supported the initial design
development and consultation process, ensuring
every element of the concept was fully optimised for
premium print production.
With the designs approved, production moved to
Reflex Label+ Keighley, where the labels were brought
to life on press.
The team embraced an entirely new die setup alongside
unfamiliar luxury materials, carefully adapting the
production process to maintain the exceptional quality
and handcrafted feel required for the project. Every stage
was executed with precision to ensure the finished labels
reflected the premium nature of the Bagsby & Blair brand.
Elevating detail through micro-embossed foiling
The client requested a subtle linear texture within the
foil detailing; a feature intended to add depth without
overpowering the overall design.
Rather than simulate the effect through print, the
Proof+ team developed an entirely tactile solution.
Through expert consultation on foil shade selection
and die engineering, a bespoke micro-embossed line
texture was integrated directly into the foil die itself.
The result was a delicate yet highly sophisticated
finish that introduced both visual depth and physical
texture to the label. This innovative enhancement
became one of the defining premium characteristics
of the final design and exceeded the original
creative brief.
A world-first in sequential foiling
One of the most ambitious aspects of the project
involved the bottle numbering system.
The client wanted every sequential number to appear
in foil, not printed ink, to maintain a luxury aesthetic
across all limited-edition bottles. Achieving this
presented a significant technical challenge that had
never previously been solved at this scale.
Following production at Reflex Label+ Keighley, the
team at Proof+ engineered an entirely new sequential
foiling process in collaboration with Arden Dies.
A total of 961 uniquely numbered labels were
successfully produced with fully foiled sequential
numbering, marking the first successful implementation
of this process anywhere in the world.
Premium product photography & brand imagery
To complete the launch, the team at Graphic Brands
delivered a high-end product photography shoot,
creating premium marketing assets that supported the
brand’s digital presence and launch campaign.
Award-winning recognition
The Bagsby & Blair project quickly gained recognition
within both the print and whisky industries for its
innovation and design excellence.

PRINT & PACKAGING MATTERS
SEALPAC A6max traysealer
supports renowned Norwegian
seafood manufacturer in supplying
fresh fish every day
Located in Hagan, close to Oslo,
Domstein Sjømat, part of the Norwegian
Domstein Group, processes and
packages fresh seafood at highest quality
standards. Under its motto ‘Fersk fisk hver dag’
(‘Fresh fish every day’), the company provides
seafood products to all major retailers in
Norway. Several years ago, Domstein Sjømat
decided to boost its packaging department by
investing in a brand-new SEALPAC A6max
traysealer to run both vacuum skin and
modified atmosphere packaging. We spoke
with Mr. Kestutis Krasauskas, Production
Manager at Domstein Sjømat, about how
this investment assists the company in
living its motto.
Still a family company
Rasmus Domstein, grandfather of the current
owners, established the company Domstein
(https://www.domstein.no) in 1925, more than
100 years ago. Rasmus was a fisherman who
started a small processing business, mainly
based on traditional methods like salting and
drying of fish. After the second world war, his
son Knut Domstein took over the business. He
introduced new technologies, such as freezing
and fillet production. The operation gradually
increased, and in the 1990s, Domstein
expanded significantly. The company became
strongly committed to ensuring that Norwegian
consumers have access to high-quality seafood,
resulting in the establishment of nationwide
distribution in 2005. After several rounds of
Domstein Sjømat lives its motto
‘Fresh fish every day’
The SEALPAC A6max traysealer allows for
consistent sealing without headaches
restructuring, the business was continued in
Domstein Sjømat in 2014. Today, Domstein
Sjømat is one of the largest suppliers of seafood
within Norway. The business also includes sales
and distribution of fresh seafood products to
wholesale, catering, hotels, and restaurants.
As such, Domstein has developed from a small
local fish business into a modern seafood
company with operations across Norway. It
is still a family-owned company, now in its
third generation, which is quite unique in the
industry.
Experienced in production technology
Domstein has companies all over Norway, for
example in Kristiansand, Stavanger, Bergen,
Trondheim, and Tromsø. At its brand-new
building in Hagan, near Oslo, around 10 to 15
persons engage in the production of retail packs
every day, all depending on the volumes. They
package on average 1.5 tons of fish daily, but
this can add up to 5 tons on peak days. The
retail department has two automated packaging
lines, its flagship being the line with a SEALPAC
A6max traysealer purchased in 2023.
Kestutis Krasauskas is Production Manager at
the factory in Hagan. He joined the company
one year ago, in April 2025, but he already
has 15 years of experience in seafood. Born in
Lithuania, he later moved to Scotland, to end
up in Norway working for seafood companies
like Mowi and Lerøy. Kestas, as he likes to
be called, explains, “My main responsibilities
include overseeing daily production operations,
ensuring product quality and food safety, and
managing the production team. I have full
personnel responsibility, including planning
shifts and creating a good and efficient
working environment. I am also responsible
for procurement related to production,
ensuring that we have the right raw materials
and packaging available at the right time. In
addition, I have technical responsibility for our
production equipment, including monitoring
performance, co-ordinating maintenance, and
collaborating with suppliers and technicians to
resolve issues. I work closely with departments
such as Quality, Logistics, and Sales to ensure
smooth operations, and I am continuously
focused on improving efficiency, reducing
waste, and optimizing processes.”
Committed to quality, freshness,
and sustainability
Domstein Sjømat’s motto is ‘Fersk fisk hver
dag’ (‘Fresh fish every day’). This commitment
to quality and freshness is in the blood vessels
of the company. It starts with the fresh seafood
from approved fisheries and Norwegian
waters only, mainly the West and North coast.
From there, quality control and traceability
are guaranteed throughout the entire
production chain. Within Kestas’ production
area, this is also practiced in the daily team
meeting before production, where every team

The line runs both skin packaging and
modified atmosphere packaging reliably
Kestutis Krasauskas proudly shows the
skin packs produced on the A6max
member participates in the improvement
of the packaging process. Furthermore, the
company is extremely strict on avoiding crosscontamination
through allergens, which means
they often do not run the two packaging lines
at the same time.
Domstein Sjømat differentiates itself from
competitors mainly through its combination of
nationwide distribution, product quality, and
focus on sustainability. Kestas explains, “When
raw materials arrive, we conduct quality checks
on temperature, freshness, appearance, and
documentation. Only approved raw materials
are used in production. In the production
process, we follow strict hygiene and food
safety standards, including HACCP principles.
We focus on correct handling, temperature
control, and minimizing processing time to
maintain freshness and product quality. We
also ensure full traceability throughout the
process, from raw material to finished product,
which allows us to quickly identify and manage
any deviations. In addition, we continuously
monitor production parameters and work on
improvements to reduce waste, optimise yield,
and ensure consistent product quality.”
Strong guidance by local
packaging experts
In 2023, Domstein Sjømat purchased a
SEALPAC A6max traysealer. Kestas, “I was
not working at Domstein at that time, but
from my understanding, one of the key buying
reasons was the high sealing quality and
consistency, which is especially important for
maintaining product freshness and shelf life.
The machine also offered high output and
stable performance, which fits well with our
production needs.” MPack A/S, long-time
distributor for SEALPAC traysealers in Norway,
was strongly involved in the process. It had
been selling unique equipment to produce
industrial fish bait (a so-called alginate sausage
line) to a different subsidiary of the Domstein
Group. For the new packaging facility of
Domstein Sjømat, the owner contacted MPack
to talk about packaging options. This was
in February 2021. Originally, the focus was
on a thermoformer, but as white fish is quite
expensive and requires a high-quality package,
the discussion turned towards a traysealer.
In November 2022, MPack provided the
first quotation. One of the decision makers
in Domstein Sjømat worked at a different
Norwegian seafood company, from which he
knew SEALPAC. His experience, together with
several presentations from MPack, including
buying samples made on SEALPAC equipment
around Norway, sealed the deal.
MPack delivered the traysealer, whereas all
other equipment on the line was supplied by the
company Lexit. Together, they created a fully
synchronized packaging line. MPack also supplied
the packaging materials (e.g. skin trays and skin
film). Kestas, “I would describe our relationship
with MPack as close and professional. We have
good communication, and they are responsive
and supportive when it comes to deliveries,
technical questions, and problem solving.
MPack played an important role in the decision
process, mainly as our packaging supplier
and partner. They provided us with technical
support, guidance on suitable packaging
materials, and helped ensure compatibility
between trays, top film, and the machine.”
Fully synchronized line without headaches
The main demands in the design of the
packaging line were efficiency, flexibility due
to the large variety in retail orders, and quality
control such as x-ray inspection for bones,
metal, and plastic. Kestas, “We needed a solution
that could manage relatively high production
volumes while maintaining consistent quality.
At the same time, flexibility was particularly
important, as we produce different product
types and use various tray sizes.” The packaging
line today consists of different processes, such
as tray loading, sealing, metal detection, check
weighing, and sleeving, which needed to be
optimally synchronized. The fresh fish comes in
early in the morning from the floor below in an
elevator and is brought to the stand-alone Marel
cutter, if skin packaged. After this, the fragile
fish pieces are manually loaded into trays and
placed on the in-feed conveyor of the SEALPAC
A6max traysealer. After leaving the traysealer,
the trays go through a Cassel x-ray inspection
system, Marel weighing system, and Ravenwood
sleever, after which they are placed in cardboard
boxes. Kestas, “MPack mainly supported us with
the packaging side, including trays and top film,
ensuring consistent sealing without headaches.”
Flexibility is key
The SEALPAC A6max has been in use at
Domstein Sjømat for several years now. Kestas,
“One of its main strengths is the consistent
sealing quality. The machine is also very
dependable in daily operation. We have a stable
performance with minimal downtime, which
is critical for maintaining production flow.
Another strong point is flexibility. The A6max
allows us to run different tray sizes and product
types with relatively quick changeovers, which
fits well with our production needs.”
On the A6max, seafood is packaged in two tray
sizes, using two different packaging systems:
MAP and vacuum skin packaging. Kestas,
“TraySkin ® is typically used for products where
presentation is important, for example premium
cuts or products where we want a tight film
around the product. In terms of shelf life, MAP
products typically have a shelf life of around 10
to 12 days, depending on the product. For MAP,
we mainly use gas mixtures based on CO 2
and
N 2
. CO 2
helps to inhibit bacterial growth, while
N 2
is used as a filler gas to maintain package
shape and protect the product.”
Domstein Sjømat also has a tool to run
aluminium trays, but these are mainly for niche or
seasonal products (e.g. Christmas time). Kestas,
“From a sustainability perspective, aluminium
has some advantages, especially because it is
highly recyclable and can be reused multiple times
without losing quality. However, at this stage,
we have chosen other packaging solutions that
better fit our market requirements.”
Room for expansion
Kestutis Krasauskas is extremely happy
that the packaging, produced on the A6max
traysealer, is strong and of high quality. It is not
easy to damage mechanically, which ensures
that the seafood product is well protected
during transport and handling. In addition,
the packaging is fully transparent, allowing
the customer to see the product from all
sides. Nothing is hidden, which is particularly
important for fresh fish. Also, all trays have an
attractive sleeve with product information and
a peel tab for easy opening. The retail packs
of Domstein Sjømat are sold at numerous
Norwegian retail chains and specialised
seafood shops. Kestas concludes, “If production
volumes continue to grow, the older, standalone
traysealer of a different brand may well
be replaced for another SEALPAC traysealer,
as we are quite pleased with its performance.”

PRINT & PACKAGING MATTERS
Plastics in perspective
used. Therefore, using glass instead of
plastic simply adds to climate change.
Plastic packaging: Reduces food
waste
In 2011, the United Nations Food Waste
Report estimated that worldwide 1.3
billion tonnes (30% of all food produced)
is wasted. Every year the resulting GHG
emissions are responsible for 8-10% of
all GHG emissions. Thus, only the USA
and China generate more GHG emissions
globally than food waste!
Plastics have become one of the
most debated materials of modern
times, frequently portrayed as a
primary environmental villain and the
focus of widespread campaigns to reduce
or eliminate their use. Yet, much of this
conversation overlooks a growing body
of scientific research that paints a far
more complex picture. From reducing
greenhouse gas emissions and improving
transport efficiency, to cutting food
waste and enabling life-saving medical
advancements, plastics continue to play
a critical but often misunderstood role
in our daily lives.
This article brings together key research
and insights to challenge common
assumptions and provide a more balanced
perspective on plastics, highlighting not
only the challenges, but also the substantial
environmental and societal benefits they
deliver when used responsibly.
Climate change
The biggest threat facing mankind is
climate change, yet we choose to ignore
the major role plastics play in reducing
GHG emissions when compared to
alternative materials, be they paper, board,
glass, tin, or aluminium. The following
research all substantiates this claim:
● Denkstatt: Impact of plastics on life
cycle energy consumption (2010/11)
● McKinsey and Co: Climate Impact of
Plastics (2016)
● US National Institute of Standards and
Technology: Environmental Impacts of
Plastics (2022)
● European Environmental Science and
Technology: Replacing Plastics is Worse
for GHG Emissions (2024)
● University of Sheffield/Cambridge:
Replacing Plastics with Alternatives is
Worse for GHG Emissions (2024)
Summary
There are many more. The research
quoted includes GHG emissions from all
the major industries using plastics, i.e.
Packaging, Construction, Automotive,
Textiles and Consumer goods.
These industries consume circa 90%
of global plastics used. The reductions
in GHG emissions, when compared to
alternative materials, is estimated to be
between 10% and 90%. These GHG
reductions occurred in over 90% of
all the researched applications.
Thus, we can either assume all the
research quoted is flawed, or the use
of plastics reduce GHG emissions by
many millions of tonnes a year and
that replacing plastics with alternative
materials simply adds to climate change!
The question has to be asked, why do
we see supermarkets, brand owners, and
WRAP promoting plastic replacement?
Transport
In 2010, Denkstatt (Austria) also
investigated the effect on transport
of replacing plastic packaging with
alternative material. They concluded
that the increase in weight transported
would be 100 million tonnes, incurring
an additional 7 million additional lorry
movements. For example, they estimated
that 1 truck load of plastic bottles requires
between 10-15 truckloads when glass is
The largest percentage waste was estimated
to be in fruit and vegetables (45%). It is
indisputable that plastic packaging reduces
food waste by maintaining the pack
contents are edible for longer and extending
shelf life. Plastic wrapped fruit and veg, in
particular, are criticised for ‘over packaging.’
Yet, the plastic has a carbon footprint of
circa 1-2% of the product it is preserving.
Fruit, veg, meat, cheese, chicken, all benefit
from extended shelf life when packed
in plastic. Therefore, whenever possible,
perishable foods should be plastic wrapped
to keep them edible for longer.
Summary
Plastic packaging allied to modern packaging
technology, enables food to be kept edible for
longer. This saves many millions of tonnes of
GHG emissions. Environmentally, producing
some ‘over packaging’ is preferable to food
waste. As food markets around the world
develop from farm gate to supermarkets,
the demand for plastic packaging increases.
However, less food is wasted, so it is logical
to conclude that growth in plastic production
when used for packaging for food is
environmentally beneficial.
Microplastics and Nano plastics
We have been aware that inhaled particles
can enter our blood stream and organs
for over 20 years (A Nemmar 2002). We
are also aware that these particles can be
harmful to humans. The WHO estimated
in 2012 that there were 3.7 million deaths
due to air pollution.
But what does the WHO say about
microplastics? Three investigations have
taken place 2019-2022-2023. The 2023
investigation reviewed hundreds of
laboratory and environmental studies.
The WHO conclusion was ‘Current
evidence does not demonstrate a clear
human health risk’ – as always, they
indicate ‘more research is required.’
18
FDM is sponsored by Hart Door Systems – see them on page 5
PRINT & PACKAGING MATTERS
Similarly, the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has
investigated microplastics, their conclusions:
● Current exposure is very low
● Detecting microplastics has become more accurate
● No confirmed health risk have been identified
● Further research is required!
Summary
Logic suggests we have had microplastics in our bodies for some
70 years, ever since we first wrapped our food in plastic and
adopted plastic clothing. Current detection technologies using
electron microscopes ‘discovered’ microplastics in our bodies (along
with other contaminants) circa 10 years ago, some 60 years after we
commenced ingesting plastics. Yet medical science has not reported
any adverse effects on humans from plastics in our bodies. It is also
a fact that for over 70 years we have had blood and plasma, which
has been stored for up to a year in plastic, introduced into our
bodies down a plastic tube, from a plastic bottle. This process has
helped to save millions of lives worldwide and is considered to be
one of the greatest innovations in human healthcare. Inevitably it
would also enter microplastics into our bloodstream.
Conclusion
All the information provided here is factual and easily checked.
For those who have bothered to read to this point, they will
appreciate the benefits that plastics have brought to mankind
improving all our lives and hopefully this information gives
some perspective when the next anti-plastic post appears.

Tumbledown Gin wins prestigious
Gin Guide Silver Award
umbledown Gin – the Falkland Islandsbased
luxury brand that’s gaining a UK and
T
worldwide reputation – has won a prestigious
international drinks industry award.
The Gin Guide selected Tumbledown as a finalist
in the Traditional Gin (over 42% ABV) category
alongside spirits from the UK, Europe, USA and
New Zealand. Following blind tasting by an expert
judging panel, Tumbledown won a Silver Award. The
high-quality spirit is distilled on the Falkland Islands
using fresh local water and native botanicals. It’s
then shipped 8,000 miles by the Royal Navy Fleet
Auxiliary to the UK. The Gin Guide is the industry’s
global membership organisation and a ‘go to’ hub
for expert reviews and latest news.
John Hellowell commented, “The Gin Guide
annual awards are widely regarded as our
industry’s equivalent of The Oscars, so it’s a
great honour for Tumbledown to be a finalist
and to receive a Silver Award. It’s a first for
our brand, and a fantastic achievement for the
business bearing in mind that we’re still a relative
newcomer to the market and competing against
more established brands.”
born entrepreneur John Hellowell, a successful
Isle of Man businessman who was then living and
working in the Falklands, saw the potential in
other markets and how to overcome the logistical
challenges posed by its remote location.
Tumbledown Gin was first produced in 2018. It is
named after Mount Tumbledown, which overlooks
the Falkland Islands’ capital, Port Stanley. The Battle
of Mount Tumbledown was a significant turning
point in the Falklands War, so it holds a special place
in the history of the islands and British armed forces.

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES MATTERS
Tumbledown Gin began with Taff Davies, a former
soldier who began distilling on a small scale only
for the local community in the Falkland Islands.
The spirit’s high quality and unique flavour
quickly attracted a strong following among the
population of around 3,000 people. Yorkshire

wines. Virtuously handcrafted
from vineyard to glass
The fastest growing segment in the global
beverage sector, alcohol-free is seeing robust
growth and diversity over a range of products.
Wine is the most difficult to get right, however
it is one of the most desired products in the
market. Nothing can replace the flavour, food
affiliation, sense of occasion and ritual that
wine and sparkling wine possesses.
ZENO produces prestige quality wines while
investing in research and development to
continue setting new standards in alcohol-free
wine quality.

COFFEE MATTERS
Miko creates new London destination
for coffee professionals
New South Bank showroom brings together coffee equipment,
training and technical expertise under one roof
time because it had to
work for both our teams
and our customers.”
iko Coffee UK has opened a flagship
London showroom to support the evolving
Mneeds of café, hospitality and foodservice
operators across the UK.
Located at Cargo Works on London’s South Bank,
just a short walk from Waterloo Station and
overlooking the OXO Tower, the new space has been
developed as an interactive hub where customers can
explore Miko’s full coffee proposition in a real-world
operational environment.
After a three-year search for the right location, the
opening marks a significant investment in the company’s
UK growth strategy and customer support network.
“This has been a long-term vision for us,” says Adrian
Stagg, Managing Director at Miko UK. “We wanted
a central space where customers could experience
everything we offer in one place. London was the
natural choice, but finding the right location took
Complete coffee
solutions
The showroom showcases
Miko’s full beverage
offering, including
traditional espresso
machines, bean-to-cup
systems, filter and instant
coffee solutions, grinders
and water boilers,
alongside technical
support, servicing and certified barista training.
Working with manufacturers including Bravilor,
Rex-Royal, Rancilio, Evoca Group and Eureka,
Miko tailors equipment solutions to suit individual
operational requirements.
In partnership with Jaguar Espresso, the company has
also added the Iberital range of traditional espresso
machines to its portfolio, including the compact IB7
model designed for sites where counter space is limited.
Visitors can also explore:
● Portioli traditional Italian coffee blends and the
Fairtrade organic Puro range
● Miko Freehand and Hand Roasted speciality coffee
ranges roasted in the company’s UK roasteries
● Bespoke coffee blend development tailored to
customer profiles
● SHOTT super concentrates and seasonal drinks
recipes
The showroom also brings together Miko’s office
coffee, foodservice, leisure and hospitality divisions,
allowing operators to see how concepts translate
across multiple sectors.
Built for hands-on training and development
Rather than functioning as a static display space, the
London showroom has been designed as a working
coffee environment.
Once accredited, the site will operate as a dedicated
barista training centre and SHOTT menu development
space, enabling operators
to experiment with drinks,
flavours and seasonal concepts.
A technical training area and
centralised parts hub will
further strengthen aftercare
and maintenance support.
“This isn’t a showroom where everything sits
behind glass,” says Adrian. “We want customers
testing equipment, developing menus and exploring
ideas they can implement directly within their own
businesses.”
Strengthening UK support
The London opening complements Miko’s wider
UK infrastructure, which includes regional offices in
Redruth, Exeter, Sheffield and Glasgow, supported by
three UK roasteries producing fresh small-batch coffee.
“For us, it’s about accessibility,” Adrian adds. “Having
one central location makes it easier for our teams and
customers to come together, strengthening collaboration
and helping us deliver a better overall service.”
Founded in Turnhout, Belgium, Miko Coffee has
grown from a family-run roastery into one of
Europe’s leading coffee specialists, operating in
more than 40 countries worldwide.
“With this new London hub, we’re reinforcing our
commitment to supporting customers at every stage
of their journey,” Adrian concludes. “It’s a space
designed to inspire ideas, encourage innovation
and help operators grow their businesses.”
