BTS
IS BACK!
As BTS gears
up for its highly
anticipated
Malaysia stop
this December,
we look back
at the journey,
the legacy, and
the comeback
that's captivating
millions once
again
In the ever-evolving world of pop culture, few names resonate as
powerfully as BTS. More than just a boy band, they are a cultural
movement, a global phenomenon, and for millions around the
world, a source of comfort, identity, and inspiration.
For the Malaysian ARMY, the excitement has reached fever pitch.
After years of anticipation, BTS will finally bring their highly
anticipated Arirang World Tour to Malaysia with performances on
12 and 13 December 2026. Originally scheduled as a one-nightonly
concert, the overwhelming response from fans saw tickets
snapped up within hours, prompting organisers to add a second
show. It is a testament to BTS's unparalleled popularity and the
unwavering devotion of their fanbase, who are expected to descend
upon the stadium in a sea of iconic purple—from hair and outfits
to glowing ARMY Bomb light sticks. From young children attending
their very first concert to parents and even grandparents who have
embraced the BTS phenomenon, the concerts promise to be one of
Malaysia's biggest entertainment events of the year.
Today, as they take centre stage once again with their monumental
Arirang World Tour, BTS are not just returning—they are redefining
what it means to endure, evolve, and lead.
12
JULY/AUGUST 2026 TREND
Long before sold-out stadiums and Billboard domination, BTS
began as underdogs. Formed in 2010 under what was then a
relatively small agency, Big Hit Entertainment, the group officially
debuted in 2013 with 2 Cool 4 Skool. In an industry dominated by
powerhouse labels, BTS had no choice but to do things differently.
They built their empire the hard way—through relentless live
performances, raw storytelling, and an unprecedented level of fan
engagement via social media. Their authenticity struck a chord.
Singing about mental health, youth struggles, and the pressures of
growing up, BTS gave a voice to a generation navigating uncertainty.
That honesty would become their superpower.
What followed was nothing short of historic. From their early
albums Dark & Wild and Wake Up to the breakthrough success of
Wings, BTS steadily climbed the ranks. But it was between 2017
and 2020 that they truly exploded onto the global stage.
They became the first Korean act to top the Billboard 200 with Love
Yourself: Tear, and the fastest group since The Beatles to score
four No. 1 albums in under two years. Hits like Dynamite, Butter,
and Permission to Dance didn't just top charts—they reshaped the
global music landscape.
Yet, beyond the accolades, BTS stood for something deeper. They
addressed the United Nations, championed self-love through their
UNICEF Love Myself campaign, and became cultural ambassadors
of Korea on a scale never seen before.
In 2022, BTS announced a pause in group activities—a move that
sent shockwaves through the industry. But rather than fading, the
group evolved.
As each member—Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook—
embarked on their mandatory military service, they simultaneously
launched solo careers that proved their individual artistry was just
as compelling as their collective identity.
From chart-topping releases to sold-out solo performances, each
member carved out a unique creative path. And yet, the BTS DNA
remained unmistakable—introspective, boundary-pushing, and
deeply connected to their fans.
By mid-2025, all seven members had completed their service. What
followed was months of intense creative collaboration, culminating
in Arirang—their first group album in nearly four years.
Rooted deeply in Korean identity, Arirang marked a new chapter for
BTS. It was more mature, more reflective, and more intentional—a
celebration of heritage, resilience, and artistic evolution. The
album's lead single, Swim, soared to become their seventh US No.

1 hit, reaffirming their global dominance. If Arirang is the soul of
BTS's comeback, then the Arirang World Tour is its heartbeat.
Spanning 86 shows across 34 cities—from Seoul to Tokyo, Manila
to Toronto, Buenos Aires and now Kuala Lumpur—the tour is already
being hailed as one of the largest in music history. It all began in
spectacular fashion at Gwanghwamun Square, where thousands
gathered to witness a homecoming that felt both intimate and
monumental.
For Malaysia, the December concerts represent far more than
another stop on the tour. They are the long-awaited reunion
between BTS and one of Southeast Asia's most passionate ARMY
communities. Fans from across the country—and neighbouring
nations—are expected to travel to Kuala Lumpur, creating an
unforgettable weekend of music, celebration, and purple pride.
But this is more than just a tour. It is a cultural moment.
Each performance is a celebration of BTS's journey—from their
humble beginnings to their status as global icons. It is a tribute
to their fans, the ARMY, who stood by them through every era. It
is also a reminder of the extraordinary bond between artist and
audience, where complete strangers become one family united by
music, hope, and shared memories. And it is a powerful reminder of
music's ability to transcend language, borders, and time.
Today, BTS stands as the best-selling act in South Korean history,
with over 40 million albums sold. They have shattered records,
redefined global pop, and inspired a generation to embrace
vulnerability, individuality, and self-love.
But perhaps their greatest achievement lies in their ability to
evolve—without ever losing sight of who they are.
As the Arirang World Tour continues to sweep across continents
and prepares to arrive in Malaysia this December, one thing is clear:
BTS is no longer just a band. They are a legacy in motion, a story
still unfolding, and a reminder that even the most extraordinary
journeys begin with a single, uncertain step.
And if their journey has taught us anything, it's this—sometimes, the
world doesn't just watch history being made.
It sings along.

THE BEAUTY
PENDULUM
How Minimalism and Maximalism
Came to Define Modern Beauty
Beauty loves a binary.
For every bold red lip, there is a nude one waiting in the wings. For
every era of excess, there is an inevitable return to restraint. Trends
rarely move in a straight line. They swing.
Over the past decade, the pendulum appeared set. Skincare became
the main event. Makeup became lighter.
Yet beauty trends rarely stand still. Somewhere between glass skin
tutorials and serum foundations, beauty began craving colour again.
THE AGE OF GLASS SKIN
Few movements have shaped contemporary beauty as profoundly
as K-beauty. What began as a fascination with glass skin, hydration
layering, and preventative skincare evolved into a broader shift in
priorities. Ingredients once reserved for dermatology discussions—
niacinamide, centella asiatica, ceramides, peptides—became
household names.
By the early 2020s, the “clean girl” aesthetic had become one of
social media’s defining beauty trends: brushed brows, luminous skin,
neutral lips, and makeup so subtle it appeared almost accidental.
The highest compliment became surprisingly specific.
“You have amazing skin.”

THE RETURN OF GLAM
When HBO’s Euphoria debuted in 2019, makeup artist Donni Davy’s
rhinestones, graphic liner, and glitter tears sparked an aesthetic
movement that quickly escaped the screen. Runways followed.
Colour returned.
Today’s maximalism feels different from the contour-heavy beauty
culture of the 2010s.
Rather than pursuing perfection, it leans towards personality. Think
Chappell Roan’s theatrical stage makeup. Think Doja Cat arriving
at Paris Fashion Week covered in thousands of red crystals. Think
the porcelain doll faces at Maison Margiela’s Artisanal show that
dominated fashion feeds in 2024.
These looks are not asking to look natural.
They are asking to be remembered.
20
JULY/AUGUST 2026 TREND
THE FREEDOM TO CONTRADICT YOURSELF
Yet statement glam only feels rebellious because minimalism came
first. Without clean girl beauty, graphic liner would not feel graphic.
Without glass skin, glitter tears would not feel subversive.
Clockwise from top:
Glossier Boy Brow; Fenty
Beauty Gloss Bomb; Tarte
Tarteist PRO Lashes
The relationship works both ways.
After all, what makes a bold lip bold if everyone is wearing one?
Perhaps this is what the current beauty landscape is teaching us.
Trends are less like opposing camps and more like dance partners.
One moves forward, the other responds. One whispers, the other
speaks louder. Together, they keep beauty moving.
Which brings us to the practical question: what does this mean for
the beauty girlie standing in front of her mirror?
Possibly that she no longer has to choose.
The same makeup bag can contain a barrier-repair serum and a cobalt
blue eyeliner. The same person can pursue glass skin on Monday
and wear glitter to dinner on Friday. Beauty today is increasingly less
about allegiance to a single aesthetic and more about having a wider
vocabulary of self-expression.
Some days call for refinement. Others call for fun.
And perhaps that is the real trend beneath all the trends: the freedom
to move between them.

How Edward Chye is Helping
Malaysians Take Control of
Their Energy Future—One
Rooftop at a Time
Edwards stands
thoughtfully representing
the fact that solar
represents something
much bigger as it is about
giving people control
over one of life's biggest
necessities—energy
When most people think about solar energy, they picture rows
of gleaming panels soaking up the sun or perhaps a homeowner
proudly showing off a reduced electricity bill. For Edward Chye,
Founder of EDCA Energy, solar represents something much
bigger. It is about giving people control over one of life's biggest
necessities—energy—and in doing so, helping Malaysia build a
more sustainable future.
Interestingly, Edward never set out to become an entrepreneur
in renewable energy. Trained as a process engineer, he began
his career in engineering before following another passion that
had always intrigued him—renewable energy. "My major was in
chemical engineering, but my minor was in renewable energy," he
explains. "When I wanted to change fields, solar was the most
practical way to enter the industry."
What started as a sales role eight years ago soon became something
far more meaningful. The deeper he immersed himself in the industry,
the more convinced he became that renewable energy wasn't simply
another business opportunity—it was the future.
"At the beginning, it was just a job," he admits. "But throughout
the journey, I realised solar energy is fundamentally different
from conventional power. Energy costs will continue to increase,
and solar remains one of the most accessible and cost-effective
renewable energy solutions available."
That conviction led him to establish EDCA Energy four years ago.
Today, the company has grown from serving primarily commercial
and industrial clients into a trusted solar solutions provider for
homeowners, developers and businesses alike.
32
JULY/AUGUST 2026 TOTAL
While conversations around sustainability have become increasingly
mainstream, Edward believes many Malaysians still underestimate
just how transformative solar energy can be. The obvious benefit is
lower electricity bills, but that's only the beginning.
"People often focus on the savings, but it's really about energy
independence," he says. "Instead of being entirely dependent on
rising electricity rates, you're generating your own power."
Malaysia, he points out, is uniquely positioned to embrace solar
energy. Blessed with one of the highest levels of sunlight in the
region, the country possesses a natural advantage that many
developed nations would envy.
"We actually have some of the best sun hours in the world,"
Edward says. "Countries like Germany, Japan and Australia have
fewer sunlight hours than we do, yet they've adopted solar much
earlier. Malaysia has enormous potential."
Ironically, when Edward first entered the industry, convincing
people wasn't easy. Solar panels were often surrounded by
misconceptions, from concerns about safety to doubts about
whether they could genuinely reduce electricity bills.
Installing solar
isn't simply
putting panels
on a roof," he
explains. "Every
project requires
proper design,
structural
assessments,
engineering
calculations and
optimisation
"Back then, we spent most of our time educating people," he
laughs. "Some even asked whether solar panels were radioactive."
Fast forward to today, and the conversation has shifted dramatically.
"The challenge isn't convincing people that solar works anymore,"
he explains. "Now, there's almost too much information available.
Customers are doing their own research online, comparing
products, prices and installers."
In an increasingly crowded marketplace, Edward has deliberately
positioned EDCA Energy differently. Rather than competing solely
on price, the company focuses on engineering precision, technical
expertise and long-term performance.
"Installing solar isn't simply putting panels on a roof," he explains.
"Every project requires proper design, structural assessments,
engineering calculations and optimisation. The orientation of the
panels, cable routing, roof loading and system design all affect
how efficiently the system performs."
It's an approach rooted in Edward's engineering background.
Every project is carefully evaluated by in-house engineers—from
the initial site inspection through to testing and commissioning—
to ensure safety, reliability and optimum energy generation.
Edwards sits in quiet
contemplation of how EDCA
Energy does not compete
on price alone but on the
engineering precision and
technical expertise offered

our work, they recommend us to their neighbours, relatives and
friends."
working closely with Tropicana, EDCA
has integrated solar solutions into
new residential developments offering
homeowners the choice to customise
the number of solar panels based on
their household's energy consumption
That philosophy has helped EDCA Energy expand rapidly,
particularly into the residential market. As electricity tariffs
continue to rise and government incentives make solar more
attractive, homeowners are increasingly viewing rooftop solar as
a long-term investment rather than a luxury.
The company has also worked closely with developers such
as Tropicana to integrate solar solutions into new residential
developments. Rather than offering a fixed package, homeowners
can customise the number of solar panels based on their
household's actual energy consumption.
"Every family uses electricity differently," Edward explains. "Our
approach gives homeowners the flexibility to choose a solution
that suits their lifestyle."
Yet Edward believes the future of renewable energy extends
well beyond rooftop panels. Battery Energy Storage Systems are
rapidly emerging as the next frontier, particularly for commercial
and industrial users seeking greater energy resilience.
By storing excess electricity generated during the day, batteries
allow businesses to reduce peak demand charges while providing
backup power when needed. For regions such as Sabah and
Sarawak, where electricity supply can sometimes be inconsistent,
battery technology could become an essential solution.
"It's about more than generating electricity," Edward says. "It's
about making energy available whenever people need it."
Beyond operational savings, solar is also becoming an increasingly
important ESG strategy for businesses. As more manufacturers
export to international markets, particularly Europe, sustainability
credentials have become a commercial necessity rather than a
corporate aspiration.
"Many companies now need stronger ESG credentials, and solar
is one of the quickest and most effective ways to achieve that,"
he explains.
Recognising that upfront investment can sometimes be a barrier, EDCA
Energy also offers innovative financing models that allow businesses
to install solar systems without major capital expenditure—making
clean energy accessible to a wider range of organisations.

JULY/AUGUST 2026 TOTAL
As the company continues to grow, so do Edward's ambitions. EDCA
Energy has recently expanded into Johor and plans to establish
a stronger presence across Peninsular Malaysia before setting
its sights on East Malaysia, where renewable energy and battery
storage solutions could make an even greater impact. Strategic
partnerships, regional expansion and, ultimately, an initial public
offering all form part of the company's long-term roadmap.
Despite the growth, Edward remains refreshingly grounded. He
still describes himself as an engineer first, someone who enjoys
explaining how solar works just as much as installing it.
"There's still a lot of education to be done," he says. "Solar isn't just
about buying panels. It's about understanding the right system,
the right design and the right solution."
Perhaps that's what makes Edward Chye different. In an industry
where many are chasing the next sale, he is focused on something
more enduring—building trust, sharing knowledge and helping
Malaysians rethink the way they power their homes, businesses
and futures.
After all, the greatest energy revolution isn't happening in distant
laboratories or futuristic cities. It's unfolding quietly, one rooftop
at a time.

CADDYSHACK (1980)
Set within the world of an exclusive country club,
Caddyshack follows an eccentric cast of golfers,
caddies, and club members whose rivalries and
misadventures spiral into increasingly absurd
territory. What begins as a coming-of-age story for
a young caddie quickly becomes a look at privilege,
competition, and the strange personalities that seem
to thrive around golf.

TIN CUP (1996)
Every golfer knows someone like Roy McAvoy. Gifted, stubborn, and
utterly convinced that the risky shot is the right one. Kevin Costner’s
charismatic antihero spends much of the film battling his own
instincts, embarking on a journey that tests his ambition, pride, and
willingness to risk everything for a shot worth taking.
HAPPY GILMORE (1996)
After discovering that his hockey slapshot translates remarkably
well to golf, an angry and unconventional athlete stumbles into the
professional game. He bulldozes his way through the professional
ranks, and nearly three decades later, Happy Gilmore is still one of
the sport’s most entertaining competitors.
THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE (2000)
Part sports film, part spiritual allegory, the film follows a former golf
prodigy struggling to find direction, thus retreating from the game
he once loved. Drawing inspiration from the Bhagavad Gita, the film
treats the golf course less as a sporting arena and more as a place
of self-discovery.

BOBBY JONES: STROKE OF GENIUS (2004)
Long before Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus, Bobby Jones became
one of golf’s first global stars. The film traces his journey from a
gifted young player to Grand Slam winner and co-founder of Augusta
National. It explores the discipline, sacrifice, and personal convictions
that helped shape both his career and the modern game itself.
THE GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED (2005)
Based on true events, the film follows Francis Ouimet, a workingclass
amateur who finds himself competing against the sport’s most
celebrated players in the 1913 U.S. Open. As social barriers and
expectations close in around him, golf becomes a stage for a much
larger story: a turning point that helped reshape who golf was for.

CRAFTING TIME,
SPACE, AND STORY
INTO FINE JEWELLERY
Rarer Than Diamonds: The Ancient
and Extraterrestrial Materials
Redefining Luxury
In a world saturated with conventional gemstones, Kaimirra
distinguishes itself by looking both deep into Earth’s past
and far beyond its atmosphere. Specialising in ammolite
and meteorite, two of the rarest materials known, this fine
jewellery brand transforms ancient history and cosmic
matter into wearable works of art.
At the heart of Kaimirra’s philosophy lies a commitment to
provenance. Every material used is certified, documented,
and traceable to its origin. This transparency is not merely
a standard of quality, but a defining principle: the brand
refuses to work with any stone it cannot fully stand behind.
In doing so, Kaimirra elevates jewellery from ornamentation
to meaningful possession—each piece grounded in
authenticity and trust.
Ammolite, one of Kaimirra’s signature materials, is among
the rarest organic gemstones on Earth. Formed from the
fossilised shells of ammonites that lived over 66 million years
ago, it is found commercially in only one location, the Bearpaw
Formation in Alberta, Canada. Unlike treated or enhanced
gemstones, ammolite’s vivid iridescence is entirely natural,
created by light refracting through layers formed over millions
of years. No dyes, no coatings—only nature’s own artistry.
TROPICANA LIFESTYLE
49
This inherent uniqueness ensures that no two pieces of ammolite
are ever identical. Whether presented as a triplet—layered with
protective quartz and shale backing—or in its freeform state,
preserving its original organic shape, each stone carries a distinct
visual identity. Recognised by CIBJO as a legitimate gemstone,
high-quality ammolite is also rapidly depleting, with estimates
suggesting that global supply could be largely exhausted within the
next decade. Its rarity surpasses even that of diamonds, making
each piece not just beautiful, but increasingly precious.
Complementing this ancient terrestrial material is meteorite, an
authentic extraterrestrial iron formed at the very beginning of the
solar system. Long before Earth existed, these fragments cooled
slowly in the vacuum of space over billions of years. When cut
and acid-etched, meteorite reveals the Widmanstätten pattern, an
intricate crystalline structure that cannot be replicated on Earth.
This pattern forms only under impossibly slow cooling conditions—
approximately one degree per million years—making it a definitive
marker of authenticity.

JULY/AUGUST 2026 TATTLE
Each meteorite used by Kaimirra carries its own unrepeatable
pattern, a cosmic fingerprint that ensures no two pieces are alike.
It is a material that embodies both scientific wonder and poetic
symbolism: a fragment of the universe, shaped by time, now worn
close to the body.
Kaimirra’s craftsmanship lies in its ability to honour these extraordinary
materials while refining them into elegant, contemporary designs.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the Amour Fleur 18K Gold
Collection. Inspired by sculpted hearts and blooming florals, the
collection draws from the graceful curves of tulips and the fluidity of
palm leaves. It is a study in contrasts, softness and strength, delicacy
and resilience.
Crafted in 18K gold and set with Grade AAA ammolite, each piece
balances vibrancy with wearability. The ammolite provides depth and
character, diamonds lend subtle brilliance, and the gold setting unifies
the design with quiet confidence. Designed for everyday elegance, the
collection reflects Kaimirra’s belief that exceptional materials should
not be reserved for special occasions alone.
Beyond craftsmanship, Kaimirra places strong emphasis on education.
Each piece comes with its own story, encouraging wearers to understand
the origins and significance of what they own. This approach transforms
jewellery into a personal narrative, and that is something to be treasured
not just for its appearance, but for its meaning.
In essence, Kaimirra does more than create jewellery. It curates
fragments of time and space, shaping them into objects of beauty that
are as rare as they are enduring. In every piece lies a story millions—or
even billions—of years in the making, waiting to be worn, understood,
and passed on.

THE
PEOPLE’S
STADIUM
What Stadium Merdeka tells us
about independence, memory,
and modern Malaysia
TROPICANA LIFESTYLE
61
Most stadiums are remembered for what happened inside them:
a winning goal, a record-breaking performance, a championship
celebration. Stadium Merdeka is remembered for a single word.
“Merdeka.”
Seven times, on the morning of 31 August 1957, Tunku Abdul
Rahman stood before more than 20,000 people and proclaimed
the independence of the Federation of Malaya. The image has
since become one of the most enduring in Malaysian history.
Every August, it returns to television broadcasts, classrooms,
and social media feeds, often serving as the visual shorthand for
Merdeka itself.
62
JULY/AUGUST 2026 THRILL
We remember the moment, the photograph, and the cry. Less often
do we remember the stadium itself. Over the decades, it has been
many things: a symbol of independence, the country’s premier
sporting venue, a fading relic, and today, a restored monument
standing between memory and modernity.
BUILDING INDEPENDENCE BEFORE INDEPENDENCE
Construction on Stadium Merdeka began in 1956, a year before
independence was officially declared. Designed by Stanley
Edward Jewkes, then Director of the Public Works Department,
the stadium was completed in less than a year and could
accommodate more than 20,000 spectators, making it the largest
stadium in Southeast Asia at the time.
What makes it remarkable is that Malaya's defining landmark
of independence was built before it was even independent. In
concrete and steel, it expressed confidence that self-government
was no longer a distant aspiration but an approaching reality.
Before independence was proclaimed, the nation had already
begun building monuments to itself.
The choice of venue was equally symbolic. Around the world,
declarations of independence have often emerged from
government buildings, military headquarters, or royal palaces.
Stadium Merdeka offered a different image. Independence would
be proclaimed in a public arena before thousands of ordinary
people, reinforcing the idea that nationhood belonged not only to
political leaders, but to the citizens gathered before them.
THE PEOPLE’S STAGE
For much of the second half of the twentieth century, for decades,
Stadium Merdeka occupied a central place in Malaysian public life.
Today, younger Malaysians may know it primarily as a heritage site.
For earlier generations, however, it was simply where things happened.
Football matches filled the terraces. National Day celebrations
returned year after year. Political rallies drew supporters from
across the country. Concerts, cultural performances, athletics
competitions, religious gatherings, and international sporting
events, such as the 1965 and 1971 SEAP Games, transformed the
venue into one of the country’s great public gathering spaces.
Photo from warisankl.my
Among its most important sporting legacies was the Merdeka
Tournament, or Pestabola Merdeka. Established in 1957, it quickly
became one of Asia’s most respected football competitions,
drawing teams from across the region and helping position Kuala
Lumpur on the sporting map. Generations of supporters packed
the stands, creating an atmosphere that older football fans still
recall with affection.

WHEN NATIONS MOVE ON
By the 1990s, Malaysia’s ambitions had grown larger. Rapid
urbanisation, major infrastructure projects, and the country’s
growing international profile ushered in a new era of development.
New sporting facilities emerged, most notably the National
Sports Complex and Bukit Jalil National Stadium ahead of the
1998 Commonwealth Games. Compared to these newer venues,
Stadium Merdeka appeared increasingly modest. As attention
shifted to newer facilities, Stadium Merdeka gradually moved
from the centre of Malaysian sporting life to its margins.
This transition was understandable, but it also raised a question
familiar to many historic landmarks: what happens when a place
built for the future becomes part of the past?
SAVED FROM PROGRESS
For many ageing public landmarks, the answer is demolition.
Around the world, historic stadiums and civic buildings are
routinely replaced by newer developments as land values rise and
cities evolve. Stadium Merdeka could easily have suffered the
same fate.
Instead, conservation efforts gained momentum. Recognition
grew that the stadium’s significance extended far beyond
architecture or sport. This was the site where the nation had
formally entered history. Led by conservation architect Laurence
Loh and his team, the process resembled historical detective work
as much as construction. The team consulted Stanley Jewkes,
and the original architectural drawings were retrieved and studied.
Layers of decades-old accumulated paint were carefully removed
to reveal the original colour palette. Modern additions were
stripped away. Original toilet blocks and scoreboards were
restored. Timber-strip seating replaced later plastic alternatives.
Mosaic tiles were recreated based on surviving fragments
discovered during the conservation process.
With much effort, the team painstakingly returned much of the
venue to its 1957 appearance, earning the UNESCO Asia-Pacific
Award of Excellence for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2008,
one of the region’s highest heritage recognitions.
The decision to preserve rather than replace the stadium was
significant. In a region where heritage often finds itself competing
with redevelopment, Stadium Merdeka became an example of
how memory can survive alongside modernisation.

THE STADIUM AND THE TOWER
Today, nowhere is that coexistence more visible than in the
relationship between Stadium Merdeka and Merdeka 118.
Standing beside one another, the two structures create one
of the most striking urban contrasts in the country. On one
side is a low-slung stadium built to host the gathering of
citizens. On the other rises one of the tallest buildings in
the world, a skyscraper designed to project contemporary
ambition onto the global stage.
Viewed together, they tell the story of Malaysia’s evolution.
One announced political independence. The other announces
economic aspiration.
Neither diminishes the other. Yet their proximity invites reflection
on how the country’s priorities have evolved. Stadium Merdeka
was built to gather people in a shared civic experience. The
surrounding district today reflects a different set of ambitions,
centred on commerce, development, and global visibility. Both
are important, but the contrast reminds us that nations express
themselves differently across generations.
WHAT MERDEKA MEANS NOW
Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Stadium Merdeka
is that it remains both a monument and a living place.
Unlike many historic landmarks that survive as static
exhibits, Stadium Merdeka continues to function as a
public space. Visitors can walk its grounds, learn its
history, and participate in guided tours. During designated
periods, members of the public can even use its running
track. Selected events continue to bring people through its
gates, ensuring that the stadium remains connected to the
civic life it was originally built to serve.
In that sense, the stadium remains faithful to its founding
purpose. It is not merely something to be observed. It is
something to be occupied.
Today, the stadium no longer hosts the country’s biggest
matches or largest celebrations, but its relevance endures
because the questions it raises remain current. What is
worth preserving as cities modernise? How should a nation
remember itself? And what role do public spaces still play
in shaping collective identity?
Every Merdeka season, Malaysians revisit the famous cry
that echoed across Stadium Merdeka in 1957. Less often
do we ask what became of the space that carried it.
Perhaps that question is just as important.

storied past with a boldly imaginative present.
Set within the grand Milanese residence, the House unveils its latest Objets
Nomades collection alongside its iconic trunks, guiding visitors through a
richly layered journey from Art Deco elegance to contemporary innovation.
Each room unfolds like a chapter, anchored by vivid colour palettes, tactile
contrasts, and a deep reverence for craftsmanship.
The experience begins in the Giangaleazzo Room, where the spirit of
pioneering designer Pierre Legrain is brought vividly to life. Revered
for redefining decorative arts in the early 20th century, Legrain’s legacy
inspires a new collection spanning furniture, textiles, and Art de la Table.
These contemporary interpretations sit in dialogue with rare archival

The Napoleonica Room sharpens the focus on form and function.
Graphic Legrain-inspired throws transform walls into artworks, while
iconic designs such as the Riviera chaise longue and the Omegashaped

First stop, the train ride of your dreams. If there’s one thing you

JULY/AUGUST 2026 TRAVEL
This isn’t your average commute. Starting from Zermatt and
stretching to St. Moritz, the journey takes you across a jawdropping
291 bridges and through 91 tunnels. Yes, ninety-one. At
this point, it’s less a train ride and more a scenic marathon.
From your panoramic seat, it’s just endless alpine drama: snowdusted
peaks, deep gorges, storybook villages, and the iconic
Oberalp Pass. The train moves slowly on purpose—because
rushing through views like these would be borderline criminal.
Feeling fancy? Upgrade to Excellence Class for a gourmet
experience. Because obviously, if you’re going to stare at the
Swiss Alps, you might as well do it with a glass of wine in hand.
Then there’s Graubünden—a place that doesn’t scream for attention but
quietly steals your soul anyway. It is where silence is deemed luxury.
This is Switzerland at its most serene. No chaos, no rush—just
vast landscapes, crisp air, and alpine towns that feel frozen in

Zermatt is where Switzerland shows off a little. Expect
breathtaking panoramas, ridiculously fresh air, and that effortless
alpine luxury vibe. It’s exclusive without trying too hard—like it just
woke up looking that good.
Whether it’s skiing in winter or hiking in summer, every season
here feels like an adventure waiting to happen. Basically, it’s
impossible to be bored… unless you’re actively trying.
And then there’s Zurich, the stylish overachiever of the bunch. It is
where city meets serenity.
It’s where luxury shopping meets exceptional dining, where
historic charm blends seamlessly with modern cool, and where a
peaceful lakeside view is never far away. It’s giving “effortlessly
put together” in the city version.
But here’s the twist, as Zurich isn’t just a city to stay in. It’s your
launchpad to the Alps.
If you’re based in Zurich, do yourself a favour and plan the ultimate
day trip to Mount Pilatus.
The journey alone is worth it. You’ll travel to Lucerne, hop on a
gondola that floats you over forests and alpine meadows, and arrive
at a summit that feels like the top of the world. On a clear day?
Expect panoramic views of lakes and peaks stretching into infinity.
Then comes the fun part: descending via one of the steepest
cogwheel trains in the world (yes, it’s as dramatic as it sounds),

THE INGREDIENTS
WE UNDERSELL
Why Malaysia Keeps Looking Elsewhere
for Flavour We Already Own
TROPICANA LIFESTYLE
93
In contemporary food culture, prestige is rarely about taste alone.
It is about story, familiarity, and who gets to define what is refined.
The Kulim fruit
looks much like
a coconut and its
oil is often lazily
described like
truffle oil, but local
Across Malaysia’s culinary landscape, there exists a quiet but
persistent pattern: ingredients that are native, distinctive, and
deeply rooted in place are routinely overshadowed by imported
counterparts that occupy a higher rung in the cultural imagination.
The comparison is often unfair, sometimes inaccurate, and
frequently unconscious. Yet its effect is profound—it shapes
menus, consumer preferences, and even how chefs and producers
value their own culinary inheritance.
Two examples illustrate this dynamic particularly well: kulim oil,
routinely compared to truffle oil, and sala syrup, repeatedly framed as
a substitute for rose or strawberry syrups. Both comparisons miss
the point. Kulim oil is not a tropical imitation of truffle oil; sala syrup
is not a crude stand-in for rose. They are distinct expressions born
of different climates, histories, and cultural needs. Treating them
otherwise diminishes what they are.
Kulim oil, extracted from the fruit of Scorodocarpus borneensis, is
often lazily described as “like truffle oil, but local.” The comparison
is understandable: both are aromatic finishing oils, both are used
sparingly, and both signal indulgence. But this framing immediately
positions kulim as secondary—as derivative rather than original.
Kulim’s characteristics are, in fact, quite different. Its aroma leans
towards garlic, earth, forest resin, and spice, reflecting its rainforest
origin. Where truffles signify scarcity tied to European terroir and
mythology, kulim reflects abundance managed through cultural
knowledge—the ability to forage, harvest, and preserve something
powerful without formal domestication.
Yet truffle oil enjoys a luxury narrative carefully cultivated by
centuries of European gastronomic canon, while kulim oil, lacking
such institutional storytelling, is often perceived as rustic or novel.
The irony is that kulim’s flavour profile is arguably more adaptable
to Southeast Asian cuisines than truffle’s, pairing naturally with rice,
eggs, seafood, and grilled preparations.
Calling kulim “Malaysia’s truffle” might make it legible to outsiders—
but it also subtly strips it of identity.
The story of sala syrup follows a similar trajectory.
Originally flavoured with the essence of salak (snake fruit), sala
syrup became ubiquitous throughout Thailand and later Malaysia
as a practical, flavour-forward base for drinks and desserts. Over
time, its identity blurred. It became “sirap merah”—a category rather
than a flavour, reduced to colour and sweetness.
94
JULY/AUGUST 2026 THRIVE
Enter comparison. Rose syrup, often imported or associated with
colonial-era tastes, is frequently framed as more “elegant” or
“classic.” Sala syrup, by contrast, is described as loud, garish, or
unsophisticated. This is not about sensory difference—both are
sugar-based, aromatic syrups—but about aesthetic bias.
Rose carries connotations of Middle Eastern refinement and
Victorian gentility. Sala carries associations of hawker stalls, plastic
cups, and ice. One is framed as intentional; the other as convenient.
Yet sala syrup’s enduring popularity rests on its functional brilliance:
it withstands dilution, balances well with acidity and dairy, and
delivers flavour consistently at scale. These are not accidents—
they are design choices. Dismissing sala as inferior ignores the
intelligence embedded in its formulation.
If sweetness itself has a hierarchy, gula Melaka sits unfairly low
on it.
Palm sugar is often described as a “rustic alternative” to refined
sugar or a local stand-in for maple syrup. In reality, its flavour
complexity—notes of caramel, smoke, molasses, and fermentation—
outstrips both. What it lacks is not quality, but branding.
Maple syrup is marketed through narratives of small batches and
seasonal harvests; gula Melaka is sold as a household staple.
One is framed as craft, the other as commodity, despite similar
production challenges and sensitivity to adulteration.
The unfortunate result is that gula Melaka is frequently reformulated,
diluted, or replaced, weakening public exposure to its true flavour
and reinforcing the misconception that it is inherently inferior.
Few culinary processes are as globally celebrated as fermentation—
when conducted elsewhere.
Tempoyak, fermented durian pulp, is often reduced to a joke about
smell. Budu, a fermented anchovy sauce from Kelantan, is perceived
as aggressive or crude. Yet when Japanese miso, Italian cheese,
or Korean doenjang display similar pungency, they are praised for
complexity and depth.
The difference lies not in method, but in cultural permission.
Fermentation framed through European or East Asian lenses is
scholarly and mature. Fermentation framed through Malay culture
is treated as accidental or extreme.
Daun kaduk occupies a quieter, but equally telling, position in this
hierarchy of neglect.
Often confused with or overshadowed by more globally recognised
herbs such as basil, betel, or shiso, daun kaduk is rarely granted
an identity of its own. It appears on plates without attribution, in
Clockwise from top: Kulim oil ready to be used;

TROPICANA LIFESTYLE
95
traditional dishes without explanation, and in markets
without celebration. Yet its flavour—peppery, green, cooling,
and faintly bitter—is remarkably complex, evolving as it is
chewed rather than announcing itself immediately.
Where basil and shiso have been codified, marketed, and
exported with care, daun kaduk remains bound to the familiar.
It is classified as everyday, therefore unremarkable. The
tragedy is not unfamiliarity, but invisibility: an assumption that
its presence requires no articulation, no defence, no pride.
Comparing local ingredients to better-known imports is
often done with good intentions—to create familiarity, to
market, to explain. But repeated over time, comparison
becomes subordination.
True culinary maturity lies not in rejection of foreign
ingredients, but in equal footing—allowing local flavours to
define standards rather than chase them.
This is not a call for culinary nationalism. Truffles are
excellent. Rose syrup has its place. Maple syrup deserves
respect. The issue is not substitution—it is self-erasure
through comparison.
Malaysia’s food culture does not lack sophistication. It lacks
storytelling infrastructure. The ingredients are already here.
The techniques are already established. What remains is the
confidence to say: this is not our version of something else—
this is ours.

These iconic and much-loved Southeast
Asian dishes taste completely different
depending on where you try them
Previous page: A

delicacies
This page: Satay
skewers from
Malaysia
Across Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore, food feels familiar
— until you pay closer attention.
What appears to be the same dish often carries entirely different
expressions, shaped by local ingredients, traditions, and taste
preferences. These are not variations by accident, but by design
— each plate reflecting the identity of its people.
The differences are rarely loud. They sit quietly in the balance of
spices, the depth of a sauce, or the way a dish is finished. And
that is where the story begins.
SATAY: A STUDY IN FIRE, SMOKE, AND SAUCE
Few dishes travel across Southeast Asia as seamlessly as satay
— skewered, grilled, and widely loved. Yet, its character shifts
dramatically depending on where you are.
In Malaysia, satay is defined by its marinade. The meat is
infused with turmeric, lemongrass, and cumin, creating a
rounded, aromatic flavour profile. The grilling introduces a light
smokiness, while the peanut sauce remains rich, slightly sweet,
and accessible — designed to complement rather than dominate.
In Indonesia, satay becomes far more diverse in expression.
Satay Padang from West Sumatra is immediately recognisable
for its thick, spice-heavy sauce. Unlike the familiar peanut base,
it features a bold, peppery gravy made with rice flour, turmeric,
and a complex spice blend. The sauce is central — intense,
savoury, and deeply layered. Satay Madura, on the other hand,
takes a simpler approach. The meat is less heavily marinated,
allowing the natural flavours to come through. It is paired with a
sweeter, kicap-based sauce, often topped with raw onions and
chillies that introduce sharpness and contrast. Across other
regions in Indonesia, satay continues to evolve, reflecting local
preferences in spice, sweetness, and preparation.
98
JULY/AUGUST 2026 TASTE
Even in Thailand, a similar grilled skewered offering exists, often
marinated with a heavier coconut milk base. This creates a slightly
richer profile, paired with a peanut sauce that leans towards tang
and spice.
Across borders, the method remains constant — flame, smoke, and
skewers — but the interpretation is distinctly local.
RENDANG: TIME, TECHNIQUE, AND INTENSITY
Rendang is often described as a dish, but more accurately, it is
a process. In Malaysia, rendang tends to be juicy, with gravy that
clings to the meat. The coconut milk and spices are balanced to
create richness without overwhelming, resulting in something
layered yet approachable.
In Indonesia, particularly within the Minangkabau tradition, rendang
prep goes further. Cooked slowly over extended periods, the liquid
is reduced until almost fully absorbed. What remains is intensely
concentrated — a deep, caramelised coating of spices enveloping
the meat.
Here, rendang becomes an exercise in patience and technique. The
difference is not just in flavour, but in philosophy — one prioritises
balance, the other intensity.
LAKSA: ONE NAME, DISTINCT EXPRESSIONS
Laksa is perhaps one of the clearest examples of how a shared
dish can evolve into entirely different identities across the region.
In Malaysia, laksa exists in distinct and contrasting forms. Curry
laksa is rich, coconut-based, and deeply comforting — layered with
spices that deliver warmth and depth. Asam laksa, in contrast,
is sharp and tamarind-forward, built on a fish-based broth that
introduces a bold, tangy complexity.
In Singapore, laksa takes on a more unified identity. The broth is
typically creamy and consistent, with flavours that are smoother and
more refined. Often adapted for ease, the noodles are cut shorter,
creating an experience that is both accessible and polished.
While not traditionally labelled as laksa, Thailand offers a close
cousin in dishes such as khao soi. Here, the similarities are familiar
— a coconut-based curry broth, noodles, and layered spices — yet
the execution differs. The broth carries a more pronounced curry
profile, often richer and slightly sweeter, topped with crispy noodles
and finished with pickled elements that introduce contrast.
It is not laksa in name, but in spirit, it reflects the same interplay
of coconut, spice, and texture — interpreted through a different
culinary lens. Across these variations, what remains constant is the
foundation — yet each version tells its own story, shaped by local
ingredients and taste.

NASI LEMAK: FAMILIAR, YET INTERPRETED DIFFERENTLY
Nasi lemak is often seen as a regional staple, but even here, nuance
matters.
In Malaysia, it is defined by balance. The coconut rice is fragrant
yet restrained, paired with sambal that carefully blends sweetness,
spice, and depth. Anchovies, peanuts, egg, and cucumber round out
the dish, creating harmony in both flavour and texture.
In Singapore, the dish may appear more structured or slightly
sweeter, with presentation that leans towards refinement and
consistency.
In Indonesia, a closely related dish exists — not as nasi lemak,
but as nasi uduk. While similar in concept, nasi uduk reflects its
own identity. The rice is often cooked with a richer combination
of coconut milk and additional aromatics such as pandan and
spices, resulting in a deeper, more pronounced flavour profile. It
is typically served with a different set of accompaniments, further
distinguishing it from its Malaysian counterpart.
The resemblance is clear, but so is the distinction.
MORE THAN INGREDIENTS
What ultimately defines these differences is not just technique,
but context.
The same base ingredients — lemongrass, galangal, turmeric,
chillies, coconut — are used across the region. Yet proportions shift,
combinations evolve, and preferences differ. Sweetness, spice,
acidity, and texture are all calibrated uniquely, shaped by culture,
history, and local palate. These are not variations to compare, but
perspectives to appreciate.
There is something uniquely Southeast Asian about this shared
culinary language — where dishes move freely across borders, yet
never lose their individuality. Satay, rendang, laksa, nasi lemak —
they connect the region while celebrating its diversity. Because
here, food is never static. It evolves, adapts, and carries the identity
of those who prepare it. And perhaps that is what makes it so
compelling. Not that it is the same everywhere — but that it never is.
Top to bottom: A classic Malaysian nasi lemak

Not every pet thrives in a hotel environment. Between unfamiliar
smells, noisy neighbours, and limited one-on-one attention, it can
be overwhelming—especially for anxious pets.
That’s why many pet owners today are choosing alternatives
like in-home pet sitting or private home boarding. These options

easing separation anxiety.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but these options cover
most needs.
Professional house and pet sitters are ideal for animals who thrive
on routine. With this option, a trusted sitter stays in your home and
maintains your pet’s daily schedule—from feeding times to walks and
even their favourite lounging spots—ensuring minimal disruption.
For shorter trips or more independent pets, daycare and drop-in visits
can be a practical solution. A sitter only needs to stop by your home
to handle essentials like feeding, cleaning litter boxes, and providing
some companionship, making it especially suitable for cats.
Private home boarding offers a more social, yet still comfortable
alternative. Your pet stays in a sitter’s home rather than a kennel,
enjoying a cage-free environment with more personalised
attention—often making it feel like a second home.
If you’re based around Bandar Utama or Petaling Jaya, you’re in
luck—there are several reliable platforms and communities.
PetBacker is a popular choice in Malaysia, offering easy access
to local pet sitters, boarders, and dog walkers in your area. It will
provide a more personalised service through vetted communities
and specialised agencies.
Choosing between boarding and in-home care depends largely on
your pet’s personality and needs.
Pets that are anxious, reactive, or easily overwhelmed by noise and
unfamiliar environments tend to do much better staying at home.

Cats too can get pampered
with solo safe spaces with
shared exercise and social
time in pet hotels
Similarly, animals with special medical needs—such as elderly
pets or those requiring strict medication schedules—benefit from
the consistent, one-on-one care a sitter can provide.
For households with multiple pets, in-home care can also be the
more practical and cost-effective option, as it avoids paying for
multiple boarding spaces while keeping all pets together in a
familiar setting.
Before confirming a sitter, it’s important to have a few key
conversations to ensure your pet will be in safe hands.
Start by discussing emergency preparedness—whether the
sitter has experience handling urgent situations and if they have
access to a nearby 24/7 veterinary clinic, particularly in areas
like Damansara or SS2. It’s also wise to arrange a trial run or
meet-and-greet session to observe how your pet interacts with
them in person.
Finally, clarify expectations around communication. Regular
updates, photos, or quick messages via WhatsApp or a pet care
app can make all the difference in giving you peace of mind while
you’re away.
At the end of the day, the goal isn’t just to “find care”—it’s to make
sure your pet feels safe, comfortable, and loved while you’re away.
Because a great trip is always better when you’re not secretly
worrying about what’s happening back home.

THE
WELLNESS
ARMS RACE
From cold plunges to oxygen
bars, are today’s health
trends changing our bodies,
or just our routines?
Not long ago, wellness meant eating your vegetables, getting enough
sleep, and remembering to drink water. Today, it might involve stepping
into a chamber colder than Antarctica, or breathing concentrated
oxygen through a tube.
Across luxury hotels, spas, and dedicated recovery studios, a new
generation of wellness experiences has emerged. Part health
intervention, part lifestyle statement, they promise everything from
better recovery and improved focus to longevity and stress relief. Yet
as these therapies become increasingly mainstream, an important
question remains: how much is supported by science, and how much
is powered by hope?
COLD PLUNGES, THE INTERNET’S FAVOURITE DISCOMFORT
Popularised by athletes, biohackers, and podcasters, cold-water
immersion has become one of the most visible wellness trends of the
past decade. Supporters claim benefits ranging from improved mood
and alertness to reduced muscle soreness after exercise.
The science is relatively encouraging when it comes to recovery.
Cold-water immersion has been shown to reduce perceived muscle
soreness and may help recovery after intense exercise. The mental
benefits are harder to measure, though many participants report
feeling energised and focused afterwards.
110
JULY/AUGUST 2026 THRIVE
The catch? Cold plunges are not suitable for everyone. Sudden
exposure to very cold water can place stress on the cardiovascular
system, particularly for individuals with heart conditions or
uncontrolled hypertension.
CRYOTHERAPY, FOR JUST THREE MINUTES IN A FREEZER
Cryotherapy takes the logic of the ice bath and turns it up several
notches. Participants enter chambers cooled to temperatures that
can fall below -100°C for a few minutes at a time.
Advocates suggest it may help with recovery, inflammation, and
overall wellbeing. While some users report feeling refreshed
afterwards, scientific evidence remains mixed. Research has yet
to show that whole-body cryotherapy consistently outperforms
simpler and significantly cheaper options such as traditional coldwater
immersion. It may feel futuristic, but the jury is still out.
INFRARED SAUNAS, THE WARM SIDE OF WELLNESS
Unlike traditional saunas, infrared saunas use infrared light to
heat the body directly rather than warming the surrounding air.
Supporters often associate them with relaxation, recovery, and
improved wellbeing.
Research suggests sauna use may support cardiovascular
health and relaxation, though many advertised benefits remain
under study. Claims involving detoxification, however, are often
overstated. Despite the marketing, the liver and kidneys remain
the body’s primary detox systems. Perhaps the most meaningful
benefit is simply being forced to sit still for twenty minutes.
Clockwise from left:
Cryotherapy promises
recovery at sub-zero

OXYGEN BARS, FRESH AIR WITH BETTER MARKETING?
Oxygen bars offer concentrated oxygen through nasal cannulas,
often infused with scents such as peppermint or citrus. Fans claim
increased energy, sharper focus, and relief from fatigue.
For healthy individuals living at sea level, the evidence is less
convincing. Most people already maintain blood oxygen levels
close to optimal under normal conditions. While the experience
may feel refreshing, researchers have found little evidence that
recreational oxygen provides meaningful long-term health benefits
for healthy users. That said, it certainly photographs well.
RED LIGHT THERAPY, THE GLOW-UP TREATMENT
Once largely confined to dermatology clinics, red light therapy has
entered the wellness mainstream. The treatment exposes the skin
to low-level wavelengths of red and near-infrared light.
Of all the trends currently enjoying popularity, this is one of the
better-studied, particularly in dermatology and wound care.
Research suggests it may support wound healing and improve
certain aspects of skin appearance when used consistently. It is
not a miracle cure, but it may be more than a passing fad.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), the medical treatment
turned wellness trend
Originally developed for medical conditions such as
decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, and
certain difficult-to-heal wounds, hyperbaric oxygen therapy
involves breathing oxygen in a pressurised chamber.
Yet for healthy individuals, evidence supporting routine
vitamin infusions remains limited. Outside of specific
medical needs, the body is already remarkably good at
absorbing nutrients through food and drink.
SO, DO THEY WORK?
The answer depends on what “work” means.
In clinical settings, its uses are well established. In
wellness circles, however, it is increasingly marketed for
anti-ageing, performance enhancement, and longevity.
Researchers continue to explore these possibilities, but
many of the more ambitious claims remain ahead of the
available evidence.
IV DRIP THERAPY, THE CELEBRITY FAVOURITE
IV vitamin drips have become a staple of luxury wellness
clinics, promising everything from hydration and recovery to
enhanced immunity and energy. The appeal is understandable:
nutrients delivered directly into the bloodstream sound far
more effective than swallowing a tablet.
Many of these therapies can make people feel better, more
relaxed, or more recovered. Some others are still waiting
for stronger evidence. Very few, however, can replace the
fundamentals: sleep, exercise, nutrition, stress management,
and preventive healthcare.
Perhaps that is the irony of the wellness boom. We are surrounded
by increasingly sophisticated ways to optimise ourselves, yet
the most effective interventions remain stubbornly ordinary.
Still, if your path to drinking more water and managing
stress involves an infrared sauna overlooking the ocean,
then by all means, indulge!

AGEING GRACEFULLY: PREVENTING
FALLS & PROTECTING COGNITIVE HEALTH
As the population ages, geriatric care plays an increasingly important role in helping older adults
maintain their health, independence, and quality of life. Beyond treating illnesses, geriatrics focuses
on preventing age-related conditions such as falls, frailty, and cognitive impairment—common
geriatric syndromes that should never be dismissed as a normal part of ageing.
Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults and can result in fractures, disability,
and loss of confidence. According to Dr. Nordiana Nordin, Consultant Geriatrician at Sunway
Medical Centre Damansara, warning signs include slower walking, difficulty standing up, frequent
tripping, dizziness, or avoiding outings due to fear of falling. She emphasises that many falls are
preventable through regular exercise to improve strength and balance, routine vision and hearing
checks, medication reviews, and simple home modifications such as better lighting, grab bars, and
clutter-free walkways.
Cognitive impairment is another common concern. While occasional forgetfulness is part of normal
ageing, persistent memory loss, confusion, getting lost in familiar places, or difficulty managing daily
tasks may indicate an underlying condition such as dementia. Early medical assessment is essential, as
some causes—including medication side effects, vitamin deficiencies, depression, and sleep disorders—
may be treatable, while early diagnosis of dementia enables better care planning and support.
Healthy ageing is about more than living longer—it is about preserving physical, mental, and
emotional wellbeing. Staying physically active, eating a balanced diet, remaining socially connected,
and attending regular health screenings can help older adults maintain independence and enjoy a
better quality of life.

JULY/AUGUST 2026 THROTTLE

NOT YOUR
TYPICAL
SUPERCAR
Meet the Ferrari Luce:
The Electric Ferrari That
Might Just Outsmart You
Ferrari has done something shocking. No, not just fast but
shocking…as in electric.
Introducing the Ferrari Luce, Maranello’s first-ever fully electric
car, and no, it’s not quietly easing into the EV world. It’s kicking
the door down, rearranging the furniture, and installing a 1,035bhp
powertrain while it’s at it.
This isn’t your typical two-seat, mid-engine scream machine. The
Luce is a full-blown five-seater with a hatchback. Somewhere, a
traditional Ferrari purist just spilled their espresso.
But Ferrari isn’t playing it safe here. Instead of forcing electric
tech into an old supercar template (which, let’s be honest, hasn’t
gone too well for others), they started from scratch. The result?
A spaceship-like machine that looks like it just dropped in from
2045—and decided to stay.
116
JULY/AUGUST 2026 THROTTLE
The Luce’s design is what happens when Ferrari collaborates
with LoveFrom, the creative collective led by Sir Jony Ive (yes,
the guy behind the iPhone). The result is something that feels
less like a car and more like a beautifully engineered piece of
tech you happen to drive.
Smooth, uninterrupted surfaces. Minimal shut lines. A floating
nose. Rear-hinged doors. Even the windscreen flows directly into
the bonnet like it’s been melted into place by design wizards. It’s
bold. It’s weird. It’s very intentional.
Let’s address the elephant in the room: can an electric Ferrari still
feel like a Ferrari?
Well…from 0 to 62mph in 2.5 seconds. Top speed of 192mph. Four
electric motors, one on each wheel. Torque that sounds like a typo
(5,900 lb ft at the rear wheels). So yes, it’s safe to say your internal
organs will still experience “Ferrari emotions.”
TROPICANA LIFESTYLE
117
Ferrari didn’t just chase speed;
they engineered feel
But here’s the clever part: Ferrari didn’t just chase speed; they
engineered feel. The Luce has a system that mimics engine braking,
torque shifts, and even produces sound based on real mechanical
vibrations, amplified like an electric guitar. It’s basically saying,
“Fine, you miss the engine? We’ll build you a better one.”
The Luce isn’t just fast—it’s borderline overqualified. A central vehicle
control unit updates performance targets 200 times per second.
That’s faster than you can decide whether to brake or panic. It also
has torque vectoring on all four wheels, active suspension, and
Ferrari’s Side Slip Control (now at version 10, because apparently
version 9 wasn’t dramatic enough).
In simple terms: this car is thinking way ahead of you—and probably
judging your driving.
Stepping inside, things get even more interesting. The Luce’s cabin
feels like Apple designed a Ferrari after a very strong espresso.
There are tactile switches, beautifully machined aluminium
surfaces, and even a fan icon that physically spins faster as the
airflow increases. Because of course it does.
118
JULY/AUGUST 2026 THROTTLE
There’s a palm rest so you can operate controls like you’re playing
a tiny piano. A key that uses e-ink to transfer colour into the drive
selector. A 21-speaker sound system. And a central console made
with ultra-durable glass developed by the same people behind
Gorilla Glass. Even the seat runners—yes, seat runners—have been
redesigned. That’s the level of detail we’re dealing with.
Despite all the drama, the Luce is surprisingly practical. It has room
for five people, a proper luggage compartment, and a range of
around 330 miles. It’s also the most spacious Ferrari ever made,
with a lower centre of gravity than the Purosangue and a structure
that’s 75% recycled aluminium. So yes, it’s fast and slightly ecoconscious.
Growth.
So… Is This the Future of Ferrari?
Navigation
apps like Waze
and Google
Maps are no
longer just for
directions —
they’re tools for
saving fuel
Ferrari calls the Luce a “new paradigm,” which is a fancy way of
saying: this changes everything. It’s not replacing the V8s and V12s
just yet—but it is proof that Ferrari isn’t afraid to completely rethink
what a performance car can be. Bigger, smarter, quieter (sometimes),
and packed with more tech than your entire living room.
And somehow, despite all that, it still manages to feel unmistakably
Ferrari.
Which might be the most surprising thing of all.

a resort developer—beginning with its flagship Tropicana Golf &
Country Resort—into a sustainable master planner with over 20
townships and 20 green building developments nationwide. This
journey is underpinned by the Group’s focus on its core property
segment through an asset-light model, while leveraging its expertise
guided by 8 distinctive development DNAs and 3 ESG pillars. As
we advance, everything we do is anchored on our OneTropicana
vision: Connecting Communities, Forging Futures, and our mission
to deliver lasting value through innovation, ESG excellence, and the
OneTropicana spirit. Central to this is our THRIVE framework, which

Tropicana strengthens governance
and integrity culture through MACC-led
employee workshop
In December 2025, Tropicana achieved a commendable four-star FTSE Russell
ESG Rating under the FTSE4Good Bursa Malaysia (“F4GBM”) Index Series. Building
on its strong ESG momentum, the Group recently collaborated with the Malaysian
Anti-Corruption Commission ("MACC"). It hosted a MACC-led employee workshop
to strengthen governance and an integrity culture. This initiative is in tandem with
MACC’s efforts to strengthen integrity and anti-corruption values by implementing
the Anti-Corruption Workshop on Integrity or Ethical Conduct and Best Governance
Practices. Held at Tropicana Golf & Country Resort (“TGCR”) on 10 June 2026,
the session was attended by 23 employees from relevant departments. It covered
key corruption-prevention topics, including practicing integrity at the workplace,
conflict-of-interest awareness, fraud prevention, and corporate liability under the
applicable regulatory framework, while also incorporating real-life case studies to
enhance practical understanding and awareness. The initiative reflects Tropicana’s
commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (“UNSDG”),
particularly Goals 4 and 16, which emphasise education, skills development, and
strong governance, ethics, and compliance.
Serena Lim, Head of the ESG Unit for Tropicana, shared, “Tropicana began its ESG and
sustainability journey in 2016, guided by our three ESG pillars of People, Planet, and
Partnership. Over the years, we have grown from strength to strength, and in 2025,
we achieved a commendable four-star FTSE Russell ESG Rating — a testament to
our ongoing commitment to connecting communities, forging futures, and redefining
the art of living. To reinforce our governance framework, we have updated our Anti-
Corruption and Bribery Policy in line with the latest Malaysian regulations. Together
with our ESG, Human Resources, and Whistleblowing policies, these are accessible
via the Tropicana Employee Portal to ensure transparency and accountability across
the organisation.”
“Tropicana remains committed to continuously strengthening its ESG and governance
practices in line with evolving practices and regulatory requirements. On behalf of
the Group, I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to MACC for taking the
time to host this workshop. Also, thanks to GHR for organising this workshop for our
employees, as well as to our ESG team for their unwavering dedication to help steer
the ESG growth and best practices,” she added.
Speaking at the workshop, Ps Mohd Ihsan bin Anuar from the Private Sector
Branch, Community Education Division of MACC, said, “During this workshop,
we observed that Tropicana has put in place the following policies, such as anticorruption,
whistleblowing, and ESG. With this in mind, we prepared interactive
subjects and elements relevant to our key topics. The registered participants
actively engaged in case study presentations and practical exercises to
strengthen integrity culture.”
Founded in 1979, Tropicana has built a strong track record in Malaysia, delivering
more than 20 integrated townships and over 20 green-certified developments
nationwide, while continuing to unlock value from its extensive landbank.
Anchored by its OneTropicana vision and THRIVE values, the Group remains
committed to quality, innovation, and sustainable community building as it
continues to redefine the art of living for future generations.

METROPARK
CONTRIBUTES RM5 MILLION FOR THE BUILDING
OF TAMAN BATU TIGA MOSQUE
Since 1979, Tropicana has grown from a resort-style developer to a community
builder delivering lasting value through innovation, ESG excellence, and the
OneTropicana vision to connect communities and forge futures. Aligned with
this, the Group continues to place importance on social impact and community
placemaking. Tropicana Metropark, the Group’s award-winning township in Subang
Jaya, partnered with Perbadanan Wakaf Selangor and Jawatankuasa Pembinaan
Masjid Batu Tiga, to build the Taman Batu Tiga Mosque. Tropicana donated RM5
million for this much-needed community facility, which will have a capacity for
2,000 people and be built on 1.28 acres of land in Taman Batu Tiga.

a plaque of appreciation to En Shahril Salam
of Tropicana to mark the first partnership for
this positive social impact initiative
Expressing his positive thoughts on this ESG initiative, En Shahril Salam, Executive
Director of Authority Liaison for Tropicana, said, “Since 2013, Tropicana Metropark
has been envisioned as a well-connected and sustainable township, evolving into a
vibrant community hub in Subang Jaya. Strategically linked to the Federal Highway
via a dedicated bridge, the development offers a balanced mix of residential,
commercial, educational, and recreational components, anchored by a 9.2-acre
urban park that serves as its signature placemaking feature. As part of our
ongoing commitment to community building and ESG principles, the Tropicana
Metropark team has pledged RM5 million towards the construction of the Taman
Batu Tiga mosque, demonstrating our strong support for PWS initiatives and
the ProTEM Committee's efforts. We are also pleased to note that this mosque
will serve the immediate and surrounding communities, fostering greater social
cohesion, spiritual well-being, and a stronger sense of belonging among residents.
This initiative reflects Tropicana's continued dedication to creating sustainable,
inclusive, and thriving communities for generations to come.”
Speaking at the official handover ceremony, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Syed Zainal Abidin
Syed Mohamed Tahir, Chairman of Perbadanan Wakaf Selangor, shared, "We are
grateful to partner with Tropicana Group on this meaningful mosque development
initiative. This collaboration reflects PWS's commitment as a strategic, sustainable,
and effective organisation in supporting Malaysia's socioeconomic development
and the well-being of the ummah (Muslim community). We are pleased that this
initiative will provide another valuable facility for the Subang Jaya community,
strengthen social cohesion, and foster greater community engagement. Together,
we can continue creating positive social impact and enhancing the quality of life
for current and future generations."

NO LICENSE
NEEDED
Here’s Malaysia’s no-license cheat
code if you want a drone (but not
the paperwork)
Let’s be honest—half the appeal of buying a drone is imagining
yourself as a cinematic genius. The other half? Not dealing with
forms, permits, and government acronyms that sound like bosslevel
enemies. Good news is, in Malaysia, you can absolutely live
your drone-pilot fantasy without needing a license, if you play your
cards (and grams) right.
Here’s the golden rule: if your drone weighs under 250 grams,
you’re in the regulatory “easy mode.” According to the Civil Aviation
Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), you don’t need an Authorization to
Fly (ATF) permit when flying purely for fun with sub-250g drones.
No paperwork. No bureaucracy. Just you, your controller, and your
inner Spielberg. And no—there’s no mandatory recreational pilot
license either. Yes, it’s as liberating as it sounds.
The sub-250g category is basically the “ultralight, high-IQ” class of
drones—small in size, big on tech. Fan favourites include the DJI
Mini 4 Pro and DJI Mini 3 Pro, which pack serious camera power
into something lighter than your average power bank. There’s also
the DJI Mini 2 SE for beginners, the quirky DJI Neo, and the Autel
Robotics Nano Series if you want to rebel against DJI like a true
tech hipster. Budget-friendly options like the Holy Stone HS440
round things out nicely.

No license doesn’t mean no rules. Think of it like owning a
lightsaber—you still shouldn’t swing it around blindly. First, keep
your drone below 400 feet (120 meters). That’s your invisible
ceiling. Break it, and you’re no longer a hobbyist, you’re a problem.
Second, always maintain line of sight. If your drone disappears
behind a building and you’re just guessing where it is…
congratulations, you’ve unlocked “anxiety mode.”
Third, give people space. Stay at least 50 meters away from
individuals, vehicles, and structures, and a solid 150 meters from
crowds. Nobody enjoys being unknowingly cast as an extra in your
aerial footage.
And absolutely avoid restricted airspace. Flying within 4.5 km
of airports or military bases is a hard no. The same goes for
sensitive locations like Merdeka Square or Batu Caves—beautiful,
yes; drone-friendly, no.
Oh, and if you’re planning to fly in public parks? Some councils
(looking at you, DBKL) require permits, sometimes applied for two
weeks in advance. Yes, your spontaneous drone adventure just
became a calendar event.

Designed for aspiring pilots,
the Holy Stone HS440 delivers
a balance of portability, ease
of use, and essential camera
capabilities in a compact,
travel-friendly package
Here’s where things get serious. If you’re flying just
for fun, you’re in the clear—no license, no CAAM
registration needed for drones under 250 grams.
But the moment money enters the chat—whether it’s
real estate videos, content creation, or “just helping
a friend for a fee”, you’ve officially gone commercial.
That means permits and certifications, like RCoC-B,
and a whole different level of compliance.
The beauty of sub-250g drones is that they represent
a sweet spot: powerful enough to create stunning
visuals, but small enough to avoid regulatory
headaches. They’re the gateway drug into aerial
cinematography, weekend adventures, and that
addictive thrill of seeing the world from above—
without drowning in paperwork.
So go ahead, take to the skies. Just remember: fly
smart, stay legal, and maybe, just maybe, don’t try to
recreate a Fast & Furious scene on your first flight.
Your drone (and everyone else) will thank you.
