CHEMUK 2026 puts regulation, resilience and
innovation at the heart of UK chemicals industry
CHEMUK 2026 brought together the chemicals,
process engineering and formulated product
sectors at the NEC Birmingham on May 20 and 21,
welcoming thousands of professionals from across
the UK and international supply chains. Across two
packed days, the show spotlighted the technologies,
policies and partnerships shaping the future of UK
chemicals. With senior representatives from Defra
and the Health and Safety Executive taking to the
stage alongside global manufacturers, trade bodies
and technical specialists, this year’s event placed
regulatory policy and
industrial strategy firmly at
the centre of discussion.
With more than 600
exhibitors and over 150
speakers and panellists
across five dedicated show
zones, this year’s edition
delivered one of the event’s
most comprehensive
conference programmes
to date.
A defining theme was navigating regulatory change
and challenges. Sessions led by Hibiscus’s Andrew
Bedford examined dangerous goods safety advisers
(DGSA) compliance and best practice in dangerous
goods handling and transport, while the Chemical
Hazards Communication Society discussed the
importance of accurate classification and effective
hazard communication, and the key changes
proposed to the CLP regulations. These topics
remain critical as companies work to keep products
moving safely and legally through increasingly
complex UK and international supply chains.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were
another major focus, with Dr Martyn Shenton
of Blue Frog Scientific discussing UK regulation,
Environment Agency thresholds and the Defra PFAS
Plan. The subject gained further weight during
the UK Government Briefing, where Defra Minister
Emma Hardy MP set out a more proportionate and
internationally aligned
approach to chemicals
regulation, including plans
to use EU decisions as the
starting point for UK REACH
where appropriate.
Industry resilience and
competitiveness also ran
through the programme.
Tim Doggett of the Chemical
Business Association
delivered the State of the Nation keynote and
contributed to sessions on sector recognition and
the changing global order’s impact on chemical
supply chains. Meanwhile, UK-ASCM explored
growth, investment and sustainable supply chains,
reflecting the urgent need to strengthen UK
capability and attract long-term investment.
Sustainability and decarbonisation were equally
prominent. The British Adhesives and Sealants
Association’s (BASA) Lorna Williams discussed
adhesives, sealants, digitisation and electrification,
while other panel discussions examined financing
net-zero capital projects and carbon performance,
product carbon footprints, clean energy and biobased
materials. For an industry under pressure to
cut emissions without compromising performance
or productivity, these sessions showed how
commercial and environmental priorities are
becoming increasingly connected.

centre stage at ChemUK

spotlight at ChemUK
2026. On Wednesday
20 May at 10:00,
BASA’s panel session
on Stage 3 ‘Sticky
Business: Exploring Future Opportunities
in Adhesives & Sealants’, brought together
leading voices from across the sector to
explore how this essential, often overlooked
technology is evolving at pace.
Opening the session, BASA CEO Lorna Williams set
the tone with a concise but compelling overview
of an industry at a clear turning point. Adhesives
and sealants, she noted, may rarely take centre
stage, but they underpin many of the innovations
shaping modern life from electrification and
lightweighting to digital manufacturing and
healthcare technology. Increasingly, bonding
decisions are no longer routine technical
considerations; they are becoming strategic
choices with far-reaching
implications.
Lorna highlighted the
convergence of powerful
forces reshaping the sector.
Electrification is transforming
product design, particularly
in automotive. Sustainability
expectations are intensifying,
driven by regulation and
customer demand. Meanwhile,
digitalisation is accelerating production and
raising expectations around performance and
precision. Together, these forces are pushing
adhesives and sealants firmly into the mainstream
of industrial strategy.
This framing led into a dynamic panel discussion,
bringing together expertise from within BASA
alongside fresh perspectives from member
companies. Joining Lorna on stage were BASA
Technical Officer, Jim Palmer, and Regulatory
Officer, Caroline Raine, offering insight into the
technical and compliance challenges facing the
industry. The session was moderated by Dr Martin
Stimpson, BASA’s newest consultant, whose
focus on new business development reflects
the growing need for strategic thinking beyond
formulation alone.

next generation of industry leadership. Phoebe
Cawley-Davies, Sustainability Practitioner at F.
Ball and Co. Ltd, Rachel Bentham, Marketing

Across industries, adhesives are enabling new
applications, from structural and thermal bonding
in electric vehicles to modular construction and
advanced medical devices. At the same time,
innovation in materials is expanding possibilities,
with bio-based formulations, recyclable
systems and faster-curing technologies gaining
momentum. As panellists emphasised, these shifts
are reinforcing adhesives as enablers of modern
design and production.
Sustainability emerged as both a major
opportunity and a point of tension. Adhesives
play a vital role in delivering
sustainability benefits with
lighter vehicles, more efficient
buildings and longer-lasting
products, but they also present
challenges around end-of-life
separation and recyclability. The
panel explored these trade-offs
candidly, with younger voices
calling for more holistic thinking
and greater transparency in
sustainability claims.
Regulation added further complexity. As Caroline
Raine noted, adhesives often sit at the intersection
of multiple regulatory frameworks, which do not
always align. While regulation can drive progress, it
can also create unintended barriers to innovation.
The discussion highlighted the need for stronger
engagement with policymakers to ensure the
system-level benefits of adhesives are better
understood.
Throughout the session, a clear message
emerged: the adhesive of the future must do
more, and prove more. Customers expect higher
performance alongside credible sustainability.
Regulators are tightening requirements, and
scrutiny of environmental claims is increasing. This
creates a delicate balance between innovation,
compliance and credibility.
For BASA members, this has important
implications. Technical excellence remains
essential, but it must be complemented by
investment in skills, collaboration and crossfunctional
working. Breaking down silos between
R&D, regulatory and commercial teams will be key
to responding effectively to evolving demands. Dr
Martin Stimpson’s focus on business development
reflects this shift towards a more integrated,
strategic approach.
The importance of talent also came through
strongly. Contributions from Phoebe, Rachel
and Teresa highlighted the growing importance
of purpose, innovation and sustainability in
attracting the next generation. Their perspectives
reinforced the message that the sector’s success
will depend on creating an environment where
new ideas and diverse expertise can thrive.
As the session concluded, one thing was
clear: adhesives and sealants are no longer a
background consideration. They are central to
addressing some of the most pressing challenges,
and opportunities, facing modern industry.
The BASA panel at ChemUK 2026 did more than
explore ‘sticky business’. It demonstrated that this
once-overlooked sector is becoming a critical
enabler of innovation, sustainability and growth,
and that those who recognise this shift will be best
placed to lead in the years ahead.

Reliable material flow: The hidden
key to milling performance
n modern milling operations, efficiency is often

process control. Yet one of the most influential factors
in plant performance is frequently overlooked: reliable
material flow.
Whether processing wheat, flour, semolina, animal
feed or spices, consistent bulk
material movement is essential.
When flow becomes unreliable,
bridging in silos, ratholing,
clogged screens and uneven
feeding can cause downtime,
quality variations, increased
maintenance and reduced
throughput.
Bulk materials rarely behave
consistently. Variations in
moisture content, particle size,
storage conditions and product
characteristics can significantly
affect flow behaviour. A system
performing well today may
develop problems tomorrow as
material properties change.

fuel costs, he offered to come and see us personally
to discuss.

money, they can take’.
As a big part of our business
is manufacturing and selling
plastic accessories into the

industries, we questioned the
failure to meet the Labour target
of 300,000 houses per year
with the amount only reaching
195,000 at present.
The answer, “Planning rules have changed – which
will sort this out” ...ermm [sound of can rattling down
the road].

an excuse not to realise the folly of ‘Net Zero’.
“No substantive support for manufacturing in
the face of strong import competition. However,
companies can always borrow more with the
Government Growth Scheme” ...great just more debt!
The government say they want to spend their
increased defence budget with companies in the UK,
we asked how new suppliers would be able to tap
into this as there is a ‘brick wall’ when any try to do
this, tbc, there was no answer to this except he would
follow it up.
What I would say from all this and something I would
encourage is that other SMEs get their MPs out to
visit them so they can put across the difficulties
they are encountering and slowly we may actually
educate them in the world outside Whitehall, London
and their offices.
This was admirable in itself as it was obvious we had
some difficult questions to raise and it would have
been easy to fob us off with a reason not to face
them. That said, “Basically the extra revenue is just
that, extra revenue. With no plans to actually support
companies by reducing duty and tax to keep the
already high energy costs under control.”
However, that wasn’t the only question we had.
We raised the subject of how increasingly difficult
running an SME is due to the Labour policies of extra
NI and NMW, plus the introduction of the upcoming
employment law changes.
The impression I got was that Whitehall has no

Multi pipe heat pumps
explained
The key to unlocking energy savings in
heating, ventilation and air conditioning
(HVAC) system is to think of it as a
thermal management system rather
than siloed heating and cooling plants.
Heat pump technology enables this
approach... but not everyone knows
that there are different types of heat
pumps on the market.
One of the most advanced types of heat
pump is the multi pipe or four pipe unit,
sometimes called a multi purpose unit.
Here are 5 things that make a multi-pipe
heat pump special:
1. It can heat and cool
simultaneously – Unlike a
traditional chiller or heat pump,
a multi pipe unit can heat, cool,
recover heat – or do all of these
at the same time. This allows it
to satisfy the real time needs of
different building zones.
2. It has three heat exchangers –
These include a heat exchanger
connected to the cooling circuit,
a heat exchanger connected to
the heating circuit, and an air heat

3. It repurposes energy which would

Drive Technology Insight event

May for maxon’s Drive Technology Insight.
Drive Technology Insight 2026: Innovations in
Precision Motion, offered a day of tech talks and
engineering discussion on precision drive systems
based on compact brushless DC and DC motor
technology, transmission, and controls.
Hosted to enhance practical knowledge about the
design, integration, and use of precision drive systems,
engineers attended from organisations ranging from
performance automotive manufacturers through to
automated warehouse management.
The event’s tech talks presented drive system
engineering topics with a broad appeal, such as
insights on the key criteria in selecting a complete

Until recently, labelling Serrano hams, which
is a must because it determines their
progression through different aging and drying
processes, was a laborious task. Since a robot
could not detect the bones in the ham, human
involvement was indispensable. Now, a Spanish
systems integrator has developed an AI-based
robotic system capable of performing this task.
The labels – up to 900 per hour – are injected
by a Stäubli SCARA robot designed for hygienesensitive
applications in the food industry.
It takes 10 to 18
months of drying and

medium-sized Serrano
producer can process
more than 5,000 hams
per day, so labelling
them with the week, year, and batch number is
a small but crucial step early in the process. For
human operators, this entails physical strain. It
also requires expertise, as they must avoid areas
with bones, which the application tool cannot
penetrate.
No chance for automation?
It is obvious that given these conditions,
automation would be progress. Yet, although the
Serrano industry is not small, this goal has not

including overcoming the challenges holding back the
wider proliferation of robotics.
The event also offered one-to-one discussion between
visiting engineers and drive system experts, giving
attendees the opportunity to ask engineering
questions specific to their own applications. maxon’s

label. A robot, installed beside the conveyor and
equipped with a standard pneumatic fastener
applicator, picks up the label and, guided by
tracking coordinates from the camera, injects the

ham producer with a very high output. The SCARA
robot, a Stäubli TS2-80 HE, processes 150,000
to 180,000kg/day of ham at a continuous rate
of 750 pieces/hour, peaking at 900 pieces/hour,
which implies a cycle time of only four seconds.
In fact, the robot could work even faster, but label
printing and previous processes limit the speed.

job quality, reducing sick leaves, and allowing

The machine and systems manufacturer
ystral has opened a new trial centre at its
headquarters in Ballrechten-Dottingen, Germany.
The new facility enables the company to carry out
more customer trials than before while processing
a broader range of raw materials.
ystral designs, engineers and manufactures highly
efficient mixing, dispersing and powder induction
machines, as well as process systems, used
worldwide in the chemical, paints and coatings,
food, pharmaceutical, household and cosmetics
industries, as well as in battery production. At
the ystral trial centre, companies from these
sectors can develop new products and processes
or optimise existing ones, train their operating
personnel on ystral machines, and test the mixing
technology provider’s solutions.

GCE launches NITROGAS NG modular nitrogen
generator to lower gas costs,
prevent supply disruptions
CE has announced the introduction of its
GNITROGAS NG series of on-premise nitrogen
generators using state-of-the-art pressure swing
adsorption (PSA) technology. Eight models offer flow
rates ranging from 5 to 100 Nm 3 /h at guaranteed
purity levels from 95% to 99.999%. Its dual-level
modular design allows each generator to be
expanded through additional adsorption modules,
while multiple generators can also be combined to
achieve very high overall production capacities.
Nitrogen generators are suitable for all users of
nitrogen, from small to large consumers in the food
and beverage, wineries, breweries, laser cutting, heat
treatment and electronic manufacturing industries,
as well as other applications.
“We designed the NITROGAS NG nitrogen generator
to immediately reduce operating costs for a wide
range of customers – from those with medium to
small nitrogen requirements to large industrial
consumers using several hundred thousand cubic
meters per year,” said Andrea Castellanza, general
manager of NITROGAS.
Castellanza added that a nitrogen generator
provides peace of mind. There are no worries about
lost production because cylinders run empty, no
wasting time with daily checks of cylinder pressure
or tanks levels, no need to move cylinder bundles
worth several million
euros. “Our experience
shows that tests carried
out in our trial centre
almost always lead to
collaboration,” says Uwe
Klaumünzner, Head of

Trials with flammable
and explosive media
The new trial area
complies with statutory explosion protection and
water protection requirements, and the machines
used are ATEX-compliant. Trials with flammable and
explosive media are possible there following caseby-case
assessment. During the tests, users do not
need to be on site themselves, but can also follow
proceedings remotely
via livestream.

in-house laboratory,
samples can be
examined under an
optical microscope
with respect to
various parameters.
This includes both
with a forklift, and no worries about delivery time or
accurate order fulfilment.
“GCE offers more than a standalone nitrogen
generator. We can provide a complete, fully plugand-play
nitrogen production solution, available
either skid-mounted or containerised, including all
required components,” Castellanza said.
High-performance 4.0 design
The NITROGAS NG produces nitrogen by selective
adsorption on a bed of carbon molecular sieve (CMS)
using compressed air, starting from compressed air
class 1.4.1, according to ISO 8573-1:2010. It features
PLC supervision of the system to continuously
control and/or monitor pressure regulation, flow
rate, moisture content, and temperature, and the
PLC enables setting parameter limits and alarms.
In addition, a zirconium oxide oxygen analyzer
continuously measures residual oxygen content in
the nitrogen flow to certify purity levels, while a selfcleaning
design discharges any non-specified gas
into the atmosphere to ensure correct purity.
Users can interface with the Industry 4.0-ready
NITROGAS NG via an Ethernet port or Wi-Fi router.
They can directly control production parameters
from their computer or mobile device and generate
reports. For those systems not connected, the
NITRIGAS NG can create reports and export them by
USB port.

Expansion with an additional trial building
possible
With a construction and commissioning phase
of just under 12 months, work on the trial centre
progressed exactly according to plan. The new
trial building was constructed in a compact cubic
design on an area of around 150 square metres and
can, in future, be expanded with an additional trial
building on an adjacent open site. “At our current
company size, we are very well positioned with
our existing trial facilities,” says ystral Managing
Director and co-owner, Peter Manke. “However,
we planned our new trial centre from the outset in
such a way that expansion is possible.”

The NITROGAS NG range features the lowest air
factors on the market (the ratio between inlet air
and nitrogen outlet flow rate), meaning it requires
significantly less compressed air to produce nitrogen.
When nitrogen demand falls to zero, the system
automatically detects this condition and switches to
energy-saving mode, reducing consumption to zero.

New real-time data production dashboard boosts
efficiency in spring production

data exists – but getting it into the
hands of the people who can act on it is

production dashboard that gives
shop floor teams instant visibility of

office.
Displayed on two large rotating
screens, the dashboard draws
live information directly from the
company’s ERP system and updates
every hour, providing operators with
a constantly refreshed view of what
needs attention.
The display uses a simple colour-coded system.
Springs highlighted in orange are due within the
next two weeks and have already been coiled,
meaning they are progressing through operations
such as grinding, heat treatment, shot peening
or hand finishing. Items shown in red are more
urgent – they are also required within the next
two weeks but have not yet reached the coiling
stage, signalling an urgent production priority.
To make the information even more actionable,
jobs are grouped into small, medium and large
spring categories, allowing teams to quickly
identify and focus on the work most relevant to
their area.
Previously, this critical production information
was held within the office and communicated
to the shop floor through periodic updates. By

Testing ultra-resilient
materials in space

expected to take place between the first
and second quarters of 2026.
Lofith Composites, launched in 2024,
has developed a unique impregnation
process that delivers up to 50% weight
reduction and 30% higher strength
compared to aluminium, as well as full
recyclability. The process also consumes
less water than conventional methods.
FibreCoat, which recently secured
€500,000 in funding after winning the
Industry category in the DLR INNOspace
Masters’ DLR Challenge, as well as being
named the overall winner of INNOspace
in Pioneering Technology, developed a
novel way to coat metals and plastics
onto fibres, thus combining the
properties of the fibres and the coating
material, during the fibre spinning

in 1985 with the launch of its first
hot runner controller. By 1989, the
company had committed its full focus
to hot runner temperature control,
developing a range of controllers,
including versions compatible with
Seiki Spear moulding tools. In 2001,

conventional Type J thermocouple
cables altogether.
Instead, a compact housing mounts
onto existing connectors on the
mould tool, replacing standard
thermocouple cables and transmitting
all temperature data via a single 4-core
cable. This streamlined design offers
several practical advantages, including
the elimination of corrosion risks
associated with Type J thermocouples,
significantly reduced cable bulk
– particularly beneficial for stack
moulds – and simplified maintenance.
To connect more thermocouples, the
4-core cable is simply daisy chained
along. Given the signal is now digital,
thermocouple noise is now reduced
to a fraction of a degree, reducing part
variation and having a measurable
input on CPK values.
