Local Artist Awarded Julie Clements
Karen Smith, is this year’s recipient of the ‘People’s Choice
Award’ at the recent Ashburton Society of Arts Awards. Although
known mostly for her landscape work, visitors to the Art Gallery
in Ashburton voted for her portrait of Austen Deans, a famous
Canterbury artist himself, who turns 96 this year.
Karen said “Winning the People’s Choice award is always
wonderful, knowing that your art is still pleasing the public but for
this painting, it is very special. Austen has been a mentor to me and
I have been longing to paint his portrait for years. He asked me to
be a life drawing model back in 2003, painting my portrait and then
gifting it to me. I decided to paint two versions, one of which I gave
to Austen.”
The New Zealand landscape is a great inspiration for Karen. She
loves the forever changing light and moods of the landscape, the
brooding skies of a southerly and our nor’west winds, all of which
can be viewed from her own doorstep in Staveley. Karen considers
herself very fortunate to have found her passion in life early on and
to have turned it into a career. When I visited her studio at home,
it was full of finished and unfinished canvases. There was more
than just landscapes; I saw beautiful representations of flowers,
trees and abstract work. I was particularly drawn to Karen’s use of
different forms of red, rich in colour and texture.
Karen’s work is represented in many public galleries and private collections both in New Zealand and overseas. She has
been fortunate to win many awards, including all the awards in the ASA catalogue over the last eighteen years, and has
held numerous solo exhibitions throughout New Zealand.
Karen is excited about her new exhibition “What I See”, which starts August 26th at the Methven Heritage Centre, in
conjunction with the opening of the Snow and Grain Centre. “There are 20 new pieces including an abstract series
focusing on the Christchurch Earthquake and its aftermath.” She said “This follows on from my ‘Canterbury’ collection
from two years ago.”

Our community is constantly moving in new directions and our school youth are no exception. A multi talented group of Mount
Hutt College students are part of the Big Little Theatre
Company Inc. and they are applying their skills in a new
endeavour at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre titled,
"New Directions," on stage 28th, 29th and 30th July.
This is a show of varied snippets of repertory theatre ranging
from classics to contemporary pieces of drama which is set in a
theatre restaurant space in a new venue, the foyer.
Our local actors perform alongside other company members
showing us how diverse their acting skills are and how creative
young people can be. Performed with amazing confidence they
produce a fun filled assortment of entertainment.
These students display values that need to be encouraged;
determination, passion, integrity and responsibility. Supporting
our youth is ensuring that the direction they decide to go in
is a positive one, and that has to be good for the Methven
community.

What an amazing area we live
in; where lots of talented people
reside. Mark and I attended Methven
Theatre Company's "Wrong Window"
on Thursday night. The show was
brilliant - humourously funny, and so
well put together. Its always great
to see locals up on stage giving live
theatre a really good go - and doing
it so well, and for us to enjoy and
become a part of such a polished
performance. I know that so much
work happens behind the scenes...
the director, the tea lady, the set,
backstage, costuming, makeup, hair,
advertising, photos, lighting, the
prompt, the actresses and actors,
the musicians and singers, all of the
practices, the family support back at
home, ticket selling, cleaning the hall,
programmes, ushers, and to any I've
forgotten.... THANK YOU all so much!
Everything you have contributed
made a fabulous show. We are so
fortunate to live in such a wonderful
area where the arts are celebrated
and embraced. Thank you again.

Lions’ Clock Now On Time
Methven people will have seen the
new clock on the roof of the medical
centre. They may also have noticed
that until recently it was often giving
the completely wrong time. A
Methven Lions project organised
by Colin Lill with the assistance of
David Barlass, the clock replaces one
that was mounted on the veranda
of Stones building (outside what is
now Café 131) many years ago by
Methven Jaycees.
When erected, the new clock
developed the annoying habit of
periodically resetting itself and
starting again in the same way as
electronic timers do when the power
comes back on after an outage.
After some cunning electronic
sleuthing it was discovered that the
clock was taking instructions from a
garage door opener somewhere in
Methven. The clock has a remote
device (similar to a tv remote) to
set the clock without the need to
climb onto the roof, and the aerial
receiving this signal was also getting
stray signals from another remote
controller on the same frequency
somewhere in Methven.The solution
was to disconnect the main aerial on
the clock which means the remote
controller will only work from a ladder
close to the clock. However, now
that the clock has stopped receiving
signals from the door opener, it is
keeping remarkably accurate time

There will be times, however, when
the temperature reading will be slow
to react in the evening. The sensor
had to be mounted in the shade and a
place under the medical centre eaves
was chosen. But on cold evenings, as
temperatures plummet, it takes some
time for the warm air trapped under
the eaves to cool down. Later in the
evening the clock will be accurate but
up until then anyone feeling the cold
should not put off wearing another
layer just because the clock is deluded
into announcing the day to be still
warm.
Colin said he expected Methven
people would now be on time for
appointments. “Many of us rely on the
clock on the Mobil station at Rakaia
to determine if we are on time for an
appointment in Christchurch” he said.
“Now that we have the same reminder
here in Methven, I guess we will have
no excuse for being late.” Colin also
thanked Ian Fowler for helping with
the clock. “We appreciated his help”
he said.
Colin also said that if somebody’s
garage door in Methven had been
behaving erratically recently it may
have fallen victim to the signal from
the clock. “But now the clock is
keeping accurate time the remote will
only be used occasionally and that
garage door should stop misbehaving.
But watch out when the clock has to
be set for daylight saving” he warned.

Wrong Window, Hits the Right Note! Julie Clements
Methven Theatre Company has once again done itself proud with it’s latest production
‘Wrong Window’. The combination of skills and talent provided a great set, awesome
music and a wonderful piece of comedy.
The show drew audiences of up to 900 people and from the moment you walked into
the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall, the tone was set for retro with all the staff dressed in their
best 1960’s garb. Quite comfortable with a glass of red and a programme in hand, the
lights went down and the band made up of Wayne Pannett, son Daniel, Robbie Giddens,
Joseph Lavery and the singers, Linda Young, Pixie Churchin and Mel Sibley, let rip with
a great opening number. It just got better from there with hilarious hamming to subtle
double entendres, very entertaining.
The most wonderful thing I find about these productions is the age range, teenagers to
the not so spring chickens are all welcome, and all have a vital role to play not just up
front but also behind the curtain. Working hard on setting up and rehearsing these shows
after a day’s work or school is not easy, so I hope that all the cast and crew had as much

Methven Preschool News
Leadership roles are going
to be encouraged by the
teachers, where the four year old children
will assist their younger peers to wash
their hands, find their lunch boxes, sit
with them and open small packets. This
helps children to develop a sense of
responsibility for the needs and wellbeing
of their peers, as well as experiencing
an environment where children are
encouraged to learn with and alongside
others. Some of the children have been
busy with construction and building using
the big house frame with added pieces
of materials. They have developed the
confidence to play around with ideas and
to explore actively with all their senses.
Last Wednesday the teachers decided
to surprise the children with a ‘Wacky
Wednesday’ where for a change the
teachers and setting turned into weird
surroundings, for example, toast on the
sliding doors, tree in the toilet, afternoon
tea setting on the ceiling and the teachers
dressed oddly. The children were delighted
when they arrived at preschool and
were eager to investigate all the wacky
happenings. A favourite read for the day
was the story called ‘Wacky Wednesday’.
We also take this opportunity to thank
the following four lovely Methven Primary
school students Danielle, Courtney,
Sam and Blake who visited our centre
for the morning as part of their Red
Sock leadership skills day. Our children
absolutely loved having you here, and we
thank you all so much for your positive

soon to be followed by Lachlan and Steffi
happy school days children.
The under two’s said goodbye to Struan
who has transitioned to the over two’s and
have welcomed Fletcher, Blake, Archer
and their families. We look forward to
helping you to develop into competent
and confident learners, whilst having fun
at preschool. Hayley has enjoyed her
experience on in house practicum in the
under twos for three weeks. The children
have been experiencing a variety of
creative and expressive activities such
as messy play, drawing and painting. The
outdoor roll down blinds have been put
to good use lately allowing the children to
continue their outdoor play enclosed from
the cold outdoor elements. We celebrated
Maori language week with the under two
kai area created into a whare, with the
walls adorned with weaving, kowhaiwhai
(patterns), flax arrangements and phrases.

Communicating with Your MP
Ashburton Borough School in Rippa
Rugby World Cup
Congratulations must go to Ashburton
Borough School as they have qualified
to represent North Otago, Mid and
South Canterbury in the Rippa Rugby
World Cup. Ashburton Borough School
is one of twenty teams qualified for the
tournament. The twenty Rippa teams
will represent the nations attending
Rugby World Cup 2011. Ashburton
Borough School have been chosen to
represent Ireland in the tournament.
Each team is made up of 10 (five boys
and five girls) Year Six primary school
students. The tournament will mirror the
real Rugby World Cup match schedule
with the opening match on Monday
8 August being played between New
Zealand and Tonga.
The success of these students can also
be attributed to the support they have
received from their school, teachers,
coaches and parents, so a big thank
you must go out to them as well. I urge
you all to get behind the team as they
take part in the Rippa Rugby World
Cup.

ACC Levy reductions for workers
and businesses
National is committed to retaining
our unique 24/7 no-fault accidental
compensation system and workers’
entitlements.
Proposed ACC levy reductions will save
households $340 million a year and
businesses $247 million a year. The
Earners Account Levy (paid by wage
and salary earners) is proposed to
decrease from $2.04 to $1.70 (including
GST) per $100 of liable earnings from 1
April 2012. The average Work Account
Levy (paid by employers and the selfemployed)
is proposed to decrease
from $1.47 to $1.15 (excluding GST)
per $100 of liable earnings from 1 April
2012.
These levy reductions are affordable
because National has reversed ACC’s
large deficits of $2.4 billion in 2007/08
and $4.8 billion in 2008/09. We’ve
achieved surpluses of $2.5 billion in
each year since. ACC’s proposed levy
reductions will leave half a billion dollars
a year in the pockets of hardworking
Kiwis and help our economic recovery.
The final levies for 2012-13 will be
determined in September.

Methven Thump Local Rivals
MethvenFC have recorded their biggest
win over local rivals' Ashburton Eastern,
with a 7-2 thumping at Mt. Hutt College
on Saturday afternoon. Mt. Hutt ski
instructor James McDonald, once again
ran the show, finishing with four goals
from midfield.
MethvenFC took control right from the
kick off, playing a great passing game
that involved every out field player, which
starved the opposition of any meaningful
possession. But, with Ashburton being
one of the most organized teams in the
competition, Methven struggled to find
that final pass that would lead to the
opening goal. Given the quality of the
football on offer, the first goal came from
an unlikely source. Playing at right back,
OJ pumped a long ball through from his
own half with Uruguayan Joaquin taking
control with his first touch, and thumping it
into the far corner with his second.
The second goal came shortly after,
when McDonald hit a tame shot to the
keeper's left from the edge of the penalty
area. The keeper should have saved it,
but didn't. If this didn't embarrass their
No.1 enough, the third should have had
him burying his head in Methven Primary
School's sandpit. James McDonald hit
a free kick straight at him. The ball went
through his hands and into the back of
the net. Ashburton pulled a goal back,
as a high bouncing ball was misjudged
by the Methven goalkeeper. Their striker
pounced, making it 3-1 at half time.
Early in the second half, the score quickly
became 4-1. With the game looking safe,
Ashburton managed to secure a penalty,
which was duly tucked away. At 4-2, the
boys from AshVegas thought they were
back in the game.
Unfortunately for them, MethvenFC found
another gear, sewing up the game with
two more goals to James McDonald, one
to Roderigo and one to Gonzalo (two
more Uruguayans!)
MethvenFC now go into the cup
competition full of confidence, with the first
round starting on Saturday.

Methven Netball is Going Strong!
Senior Netball is now into its second round. At the end of the first round 3 weeks ago
most of our senior teams were either 1st or 2nd in their grades. As a result in this, many
have moved up a grade and all teams are rising to the new challenges they face. Our
Senior A team have made the Premier grade this year again and so far have had 3 wins
out of 3 games to start this round.
In the Junior grades all our teams are getting an equal chance to play, grow, learn and
have fun. Our Junior A team is 3rd in their grade and our Junior B team 1st in their
grade. All teams will have one more Round Robin game to go before semi finals and
finals. Weather permitting the Junior season should finish on the 13th of August. Our
Friday Night Girls have had their last game for the season and have all developed their
skills and had a lot of fun. We look forward to having them all back playing again next
year.
We thank all our coaches for the fantastic job they are doing with the girls and would
also like to thank our parents for their support of the girls and our club.
Several players from our club have also excelled in Mid Canterbury Netball this year.
Firstly players from our club who have made it into Mid Canterbury Rep Teams for 2011:
Mid Canterbury A Team: Sally Williams and Leanne Clemens. These two were part of a
winning team that won the Hannan Shield this year. Quite an achievement as this was
last won in 2005. This is a great achievement and a huge positive for Mid Canterbury
netball. Well done.

We congratulate all these girls. It is great to have so many from our club selected. Of
course for each of these girls who made the teams we have had several others who
were selected to trial but unfortunately were unsuccessful this year. It is an honour to be
asked to trial and the experience gained from this will stand all these girls in good stead
for their games now and in the future.
Several of our club umpires have also gained recognition in Mid Canterbury.
Hayley Muckle and Ashley Johnson have both gained their Entry Level Award for Mid
Canterbury.
Irene Anderson has gained her Pre Centre Award and was selected to umpire at the
Ashburton representative tournament recently. This is great achievement for all these
girls. Many of our other club umpires are very close to gaining these awards and we wish
them all the best of luck.
We still have several weeks of exciting netball to look forward to and welcome your
support of all our teams.

Methven Community Courts Fundraiser
‘Path of Support’
As you are aware the Methven Community courts have recently undertaken a much needed
upgrade. With funding received from the Ashburton District Council, Lochhead Trust and the Lions
Foundation the project was able to become a reality with the support of the Methven Community
Sports Trust. However a shortfall of eighteen thousand dollars has been left to the Tennis and Netball
Clubs to raise.
The courts are a fantastic asset to our community. They are not only used by the Methven Tennis and
Netball clubs, but also the wider community and visitors to our region. Our vision is to look after
these courts so they can be used for many generations to come.
The Methven Tennis Club has undertaken several fundraising ventures and as a small club, we
still need to raise a further five and a half thousand dollars. We would like to give members of the
community an opportunity to show your support for this fantastic facility by ‘buying a brick’. Each
brick will be engraved with your family name, business name or individual names of your choice. A
path will be built alongside the courts displaying community support for this project.
If you are able to support this project by purchasing a brick, your donation would be gratefully

At first glance the AutoSock looks too fragile to replace a grunty snow chain but this
lightweight fabric alternative is genius. It is made of high tech textile fibres, is recyclable
and environmental friendly, machine washable and takes about 2 minutes for
anyone to place on tyres.
The AutoSock has been developed to increase tyre-to-road friction when driving on
icy or snowy roads. It is amazingly fast to fit and remove, they even supply a pair of

the tyre. Once you have found tarmac or gravel agin, you just remove the covers, place

Semi- Finals Rugby Tom Smith (U13)
“Pin your ears back and take it up
the middle” yelled a spectator as the
ball was taken from the kick off. Our
Semi final game against Allenton
had begun. I was nervous and knew
we had to win this game to get in
the finals against Southern. It was
a calm sunny late afternoon with a
slight breeze. The game was played
on Thursday at the Methven rugby
grounds, due to players going away
on Saturday.
I though Allenton may be tough with
their speedy centre and big forward
pack.
They came out with a hiss and a
roar but we did too. Methven scored
two early tries but we knew that we
needed to keep the lead. Allenton
came back with a good try and there
was only three points in it.
Half time came and the coaches gave
us a big rev up and told us to get
stuck in and watch the centre.
The second half had started and
Allenton came close a couple of times
but Methven came back with three
well executed tries.
Allenton hadn’t finished yet they
scored one last try. This was enough
to get us motivated. We kicked it up
another notch and scored an easy try
in the corner.
The final whistle blew and we jumped
in the air with relief and celebrated our
win.
The score was 30-12.
